What was Namor's childhood like?

For the most part Princess Fen ensured Namor would have the best childhood she could give him. Fen loved her son, but many Atlanteans and even her own father, Emperor Tha-Korr hated Namor. Tha-Korr would not kill Namor because he was born of Royal Blood but he made his life hell in other ways.

In the golden age Fen gives birth to Namor in the royal dungeon because her father was angry with her for marrying Leonard and helping him escape, but because Namor was a boy, Emperor Tha-korr decided to let her and him live but to punish Fen for disobeying him he banishes her from the city and she can only return when Namor is ten years old.

So Fen raises Namor as a single mother, she teaches him, and Namor learns everything he needs to know about being a prince.

Once Merrano asks why Byrrah bothers to hang out with Namor and it’s only because he is biding his time until he is made heir. Byrrah would often have plots to have Namor banished or blamed for things, and he was a coward who would abandon Namor whenever they were playing in places they shouldn’t have been, which lead to Namor getting trapped or hurt.

Pretty cute and normal, love his little pointy ears and sleepy expression. Not a ton of hair, which is much better. A tiny baby with a distinct widow's peak looks strange to me (as seen above in Saga of the Submariner). 6/10

January 22nd - Lady Dorma

Lady Dorma was a member of the aristocracy of undersea kingdom of Atlantis.  She was born in the Atlantean settlement of Tha-Korr, established off the coast of Antarctica and ruled by her relative, Emperor Thakorr. She was the distant cousin of Namor, the Sub-Mariner, son of Princess Fen. Although she was initially antagonistic toward Namor, she eventually grew to love him in adulthood.

Prior to the Second World War, Emperor Thakorr sent Namor out to get revenge against the surface world, Dorma accompanied him in an attempt to win his heart.  She remained at Namor’s sides throughout many of his exploits on the surface world and below.  And she further aided Namor when he successfully petitioned the undersea king to allow him to battle on the side of the Allied Forces during World War II.

Namor’s whereabouts following the war remained a mystery for many years, yet Lady Dorma held out hope that he would one day return.   During Namor’s absence, Dorma was wooed by General Krang of Atlantis’ army.  She rebuffed Krang’s advances which greatly angered the proud and arrogant warrior.  

Meanwhile, a previously amnesic Namor regained his memory and, following clashes with The Fantastic Four, he was finally able to return to Atlantis.  Namor was named king upon his return and asked Lady Dorma to be his betrothed (in so doing making a lifelong enemy of Krang).  

Dorma became furiously jealous when Namor showed romantic interests in Sue Storm of The Fantastic Four.  She tried to kill Sue only for Namor to take drastic actions so to save her.  Blinded by her broken heart, Dorma sided with Krang in trying to turn the people of Atlantis against Namor.  All of this ended up aiding the Warlord Attuma in his effort to conquer Atlantis.  Guilty over the role that she had played in the affair, Lady Dorma traveled to the surface world and asked for The Fantastic Four’s assistance in defeating Attuma.  Dorma and Namor reconciled afterwards and rekindled their romance.  

Dorma would go on to have further adventures, often finding herself used as a pawn wherein her jealousy was utilized to put Namor is jeopardy.  Yet Dorma proved her valor time and again and her heroism frequently saved the day.  

Lady Dorma ruled Atlantis for a short while during a time in which Namor was believed dead.  Upon Namor’s eventual return he finally proposed marriage to Dorma and she gleefully agreed.

Whilst preparing for the wedding, Dorma was kidnapped by the villainous Llyra, who used a device to alter her appearance so that she resembled Dorma.  her plan was to marry Namor and eventually take over Atlantis as its queen.  

The plot was thwarted yet Llyra was able to escape by telling Namor Dorma’s location as well as the fact that his fiancé had been poisoned.  Namor rushed to save his love but arrived too late.  Dorma was barely clutching to life when Namor arrived; she used her final breath to profess her love to him.    

The heroine first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 (1939).

Emperor Tha-Korr

Collection of times Tha-Korr was being his usual asshole self. 

Tha-Korr imprisons Fen for helping her husband Leo escape, and Namor is later born in a cell. He learns the child is a boy and since he is of royal blood, he allows Namor and Fen to live but first he banishes Fen and her infant son from their home for ten years before allowing them to return. Blames Namor who had a change of heart about attacking the surface world, calls him a traitor to his race and once again the fact that Namor has royal blood he cannot be killed, only banished. Young Men comics (1953) #28

Ok, question. In the comics, do Namor's people love him? Like, as a ruler? I'm curious because I've read pretty much nothing of Namor's back catalogue but I've read a lot of Victor Von Doom's, and one of the frustrating parts of Victor being a king, is that authors cannot agree on if he's beloved by his people or holding them hostage.I feel like the two are similar in a lot of ways, especially when it comes to their devotion to protecting their respective people. But I'd be curious to know if Namor's authors have been all over the place like Victor's.

The Atlanteans despise Namor. lmao. Like a lot. Like I can't even explain how fucked up it is that Namor was abused physically, verbally, and emotionally by his grandfather Emperor Tha-Korr, but he still was raised to be the Protector of Atlantis. How Tha-Korr sent him off to wage war alone against an entire surface world at the age of 17/18, how once Tha-Korr humiliated Namor as a child by tying him to the side of an Atlantean spire when Namor asked to see the surface, how much racist bullshit Namor gets from the Atlanteans because he wasn't blue skinned, the bullying from other kids, etc. Namor even knows how bad it is with his people because once he outright states he knows that his people would not live alongside another group of sea people because they are racist. There's some comics that show Tha-Korr in a good grandfatherly kindly light but like you just need to read enough see that he actually hated Namor for being half human.

In the comics the Atlanteans blame Namor like 70% of the time for their issues, or they kick him off the throne or out of Atlantis. There's about 30% of comics where he's actually shown to be beloved, but it doesn't take long for them to turn against Namor. It really depends on the writer because there are always a few people who support Namor but many of the Atlanteans look at Namor with mistrust because he often helps the surface world. But generally speaking the Atlanteans look down on Namor as their "Half Breed Prince" which just again, drives home the point Namor struggles with being biracial in a racist culture. I could pull out examples for like a masterpost someday but just wanted to respond to this quickly, lol. I should make a call out post for Tha-Korr and the Atlanteans like:

As for Namor and Doom, YEAH!!!! I always felt they were similar by the fact they both experienced racism growing up (namor's racism is fictional compared to Victor's real world racism of the Romani people) and both of them were basically outcasts in larger society, rose up to become leaders of their nations. There's alot those two have in common and I always want to explore more with them.

Has Namor ever sported that long, thin mustache that some of his people have?

No, he's had a beard when he was a homeless amnesiac in the 60s and 90s, because apparently him losing his memory also means he loses his shaving abilities. He's had the patchy stubble since 2018 that comes and goes with the artists. In Alternate Universes he usually has a goatee if he has facial hair.

The long thin beards some Atlanteans have always reminded me of catfish which I feel was the point to make them more fish like looking, especially Emperor Tha-Korr.

When I stop to think about the fact Namor was banished from the Atlantean Court for the first ten years of his life and was basically living a happy carefree life with his mother and then one day she is like: Whelp! time to go back to court, you are gonna be Prince and rule the whole empire one day. Then he has to be around like other Atlanteans, and his asshole of a grandfather and goes from being a carefree happy child to one who is molded to become the protector of his people and wage war on their enemies bc Tha-Korr wanted to use his strength and he was living in a viper pit of nobles who all hated him and wanted their own kids on the throne and his cousin Byrrah would bully him and his only real friend was Dorma and his mother and then I want to scream and cry. yeah.

Byrrah is such a BITCH and I hate him so MUCH.

Anyways I can’t find it now but there is a comic that talks about how the Atlanteans saw the humans as gross gray monsters and like how is Namor gonna grow up listening to all this hate and knowing he looks different and not internalize that? The Namor Meta in my head goes so hard in the “I hated myself so much when I was younger that now I talk about how awesome and good I am all the time because I need to believe it” direction. Like the man is sooo arrogant its partly that and its partly bc his mother hyped him up so much all the time and she was his only protector growing up and he a complex relationship with her but she did love her son so much even if she had some resentment of him.

Namor has so many issues, this is all even before Tha-korr sent him to war as a teenager. )’:

I've always had this headcannon that namor to a degree has a inferiority complex this based off the fact that I read your latest post about namor childhood

People say namor arrogant and he is but I feel it comes from his childhood namor was constantly put down by his grandfather his cousins and other Altanteens they even called him a pink crab as child growing

I think that deeply effected his self esteem and how he views himself his arrogance and him referring to himself and how great he is

Is him trying to get others recognition of his strength his grandfather and the other Altanteens only started to care for namor when they realize he was their equivalent

Of a super soldier so him bragging about himself is his way of getting people to recognize him because deep down namor just wants to feel accepted so in his mind or at least when he was younger the more strength you have the more acceptable you are to others

I have this other headcannon that namor grandfather was emotional manipulative towards namor that he would control namor through affection the more namor succeed the more love he got if he failed he didn't get any tha korr definitely seemed like would

Emotional abuse namor and not just him but fen too

Oh yes, I have had versions of these sorta headcanons before about Namor and the masks he wears etc. because there is more than one side of Namor and most times people only see the super arrogant side, and I agree that Tha-Korr was emotionally/physically abusive person. Some of the comics show him as nice old grandfather type that Namor loves but also there are comics that show how much Namor hates him or him picking up on the cues that Tha-Korr hates him etc. So imo with the way Tha-Korr hates surface people he would not be hiding his dislike of Namor at all. Fen is his only daughter, so I feel like Tha-Korr loves her but also he blames her alot. He isn't an easy person to deal with and he is the Emperor. The whole royal family has so many issues but Namor most of all ):
