Name: Needlous
Debut: Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
Lovely little larva Creeping ‘cross the wood Stretching and contracting Like a little larva should!
Some things in this world are so lovely! So lovely they inspire you to write poetry! Needlous is the very lovely little larva of legend. Let’s Larva Learn!
Tumblr media
But first, here’s a word from our sponsor, Togezo from Kirby’s Adventure! Togezo is sponsoring today’s post because it is desperate to regain any crumb of relevance. Togezo was the first Needle enemy in the series! And its design is about what you would expect. A nondescript little waddling thing with a spiky shell. Togezo was the main Needle enemy for quite a while! It got in multiple games and even got blue shoes in one of them.
But alas! Togezo was utterly replaced. Maybe they thought it was too similar to designs from other games. Maybe they just felt they could do better. Whatever the case, when Adventure was remade in the form of Nightmare in Dream Land, Togezo was gone, and Needlous in its place!
Tumblr media
No disrespect to Togezo, but I think this was a good idea. Needlous is a much more distinct design! More concept to it than just “a spiky guy”, and fits the world very naturally.
Tumblr media
(Though very strangely, Gimmick!, which released even before Kirby’s Adventure, has these two enemies that strongly resemble both Needlous AND Togezo! And this is not the only time Kirby enemies have been strangely similar to Gimmick! ones...)
It is based on the stinging hairs of many caterpillars, but taken to the extreme, becoming big ol’ stabby spikes!
Tumblr media
Needlous is NOT, however, the only Kirby enemy inspired by this phenomenon! Here we have Capiller! Alright. I know. Get it all out. I know it looks unfortunately similar to a certain body part. But it’s not Capiller’s fault that it happens to resemble a Muppet’s eyes and nose!
Kirby has no qualms about eating sharp weapons, fire, toxic waste, ghosts, and more. But he HATES eating Capillers! I assume this is because Capiller (whose Japanese name translates to Hairy Bug) is covered in irritating hairs, even if they are not always depicted visually, and that is just too uncomfortable for even Kirby to eat. Everyone has their limits!
This, then, makes it very strange that Kirby can eat Needlous just fine, and even get the Needle ability from it! Two enemies, both based on the same thing, but executed quite differently. It honestly feels like an oversight, like they just didn’t consider the existence of Capiller when conceptualizing Needlous! Or maybe it was intentional and there is something else about Capiller that Kirby hates. Maybe the eyes. Yucky texture.
Tumblr media
BACK TO NEEDLOUS enough not talking about Needlous on its own post! Needlous is not capable of extending its spikes like Needle Kirby is, but instead, curls up and rolls in spiky disc form! In Return to Dream Land, this move was added to Needle Kirby’s moveset, so you can feel more than ever like you are playing as Needlous! If you take many creative liberties with interpreting what is actually happening.
Tumblr media
Isn’t this such a lovely creature? You should not pet any random creature you meet, especially not dangerous ones like fuzzy caterpillars, but maybe you could pet Needlous, since its spikes are so big that they are easy to maneuver your hand around. Or maybe not! It is still a wild creature, be careful in this hypothetical scenario!
Needlous is such a little larva, but... what will it turn into? Assuming this is not already its adult state, I have some ideas!
Tumblr media
First, the more mundane idea. This is Pierce, a bee with a spear that grants the Spear ability! Bees have some of the squishiest and most helpless little larvae around, not like the capable caterpillar that is Needlous, but the stripes and the points of Needlous do bring bees to mind! If Needlous really does turn into the stingerless Pierce, maybe the spear is one it made itself, using its own shed larval spike!
But now. The more wacky idea! Maybe Needlous is the larva of something that does not even usually have a larva!
Tumblr media
The Spider ability, introduced in Star Allies, has a unique guard where the user is wrapped entirely in silk, with spikes appearing as a counter if attacked! Hmm. Spikes and silk? That sounds like the perfect cocoon for a pointy larva I know!
Tumblr media
And then, there is Como’s striking stripe, matching the colors and stripiness of Needlous! Yes, yes, I know actual arthropod larvae do not resemble their adult forms in this way, but I am just having some fun in Silly Cartoons World over here. Como and Needlous also both debut in the same stage in Return to Dream Land, implying they occupy the same general location, but in different niches!
Needlous is such a humble little larva, but has so much to think about! Its complex past, its many future career paths, and most importantly, its splendid present! Every little larva is so special, please appreciate them whenever you can!

The Legend of Zelda franchise features enemies called Spiked Beetles, who highly resemble Spinies from the Mario series, only in a different color. In the original Japanese versions of the games they appear in, they are called "トゲゾー" (Togezo), which is identical to the Japanese name for Spiny, indicating they are intended to be a crossover species with the Mario series (similar to Chain Chomps, which also appear in various Zelda games).
Above is an original illustration of Link fighting a Spiked Beetle/Spiny, found in a Japanese guide for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.

Daily Kirby Copy Ability 03/30/2024
Today's Copy Ability is Needle! Needle has appeared in 13 games, starting with Kirby's Adventure and most recently in Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe.
Tumblr media
Wikirby Description: "Needle is a Copy Ability that allows Kirby to protrude sharp spikes from himself. It can typically be obtained by inhaling a Tick, a Togezo, or a Needlous, though there are other enemies that also provide it. Depending on the game, when Kirby uses this ability, he either generates the needles from his skin or from the hat he obtains, with the latter case also often allowing him to shoot the needles at opponents along with other prickly attacks. Despite being one of the original Copy Abilities and recurring regularly throughout the series, it does not appear as often as many others.

While I and many others believe Adeleine is Ado, I do worry sometimes about the possibility that she isn't. Where did that girl go, who's been missing since Kirby's Dream Land 3? So playing into that idea, here is Ado resting with a few other forgotten friends: Togezo and Capsule J, who had to be replaced for legal reasons, Dizzy, who hasn't reappeared since Kirby's Dream Land, the red Squeaker who never actually appears in Squeak Squad, and the unnamed pink Gooey who replaces Chao in international versions of Kirby's Dream Land 2. They may have been "forgotten", but we'll remember them in our hearts.

Some Kirby Copy Ability concepts!
In Smashed Together, the protags are all kids and they all have some form of Power Up that gives him adult forms. For Kirby, that manifests as different forms for each copy ability. Since in this AU, Meta Knight is the adult, parallel dimension version of Kirby, so Kirby's forms reflect his design including the mask/helmet, cape and pauldrons.
More details about these designs below!
Left to right, top row to bottom row.
Cutter Kirby is based a lot on Sir Kibble's design. I think I will go back and tweak it to also reflect Kirby's cutter hat design, such as making his pauldrons resemble the little white wings.
Fire Kirby is based on a smelter's mask, and I imagine his cape is like a fireproof tarp.
Needle Kirby is based on the Togezo enemy and is the only design without a cape, so I may play with that more later. But the Togezo's helmet-like shell mandated that I must draw him in it! Fun cross-game trivie, in Japan, Togezo is the same name for the Spinies of Mario games!
Ice Kirby is just...Kirby as Mr. Freeze. Yeah, from Batman. Definitely redesigning that, but I had to do it.
Spark Kirby takes inspo from the Trident Knight enemy's armor! For a cape, statically charged fibers that make him look like a Super Saiyan! Thought it was a fun nod to Spark/Plasma having an ability to charge up an energy blast, y'know?
Bomb Kirby is basically Kirby in a Bomb Squad outfit, plus the Poppy Bros. cap. Most likely a redesign, but wanted to put something down so that I can post this!
Most if not all of these will see redesigns in the future, but it was a very fun exercise! \o/ Inspired by the Kirby fandom, who tend to have their own special Puffball Warrior designs! I love seeing all the different takes!
PS Kirby will have a kind of ultimate form that will look closer to Meta Knight's design, but with a Kirby-friendly flair.

Very curious if you have a plan of how to handle Ado and Adeleine for the Kirby character art :^Ic
I was just thinking about this recently!! Last time I drew them separately, and this time... I probably will again! Mostly because HAL themselves likes to poke fun at the idea that Ado and Adeleine are two separate characters for whatever reason. The recently released character encyclopedia sets them apart as well, so I feel like it'd be fun to draw them separately again, with the subtle differences between their designs. I'll also probably draw Keeby and Yellow Kirby separate again, despite Dream Buffet's actual acknowledgement of Keeby's name and it being used for the Yellow color pallet. Can't help myself.
(Speaking of the Character Encyclopedia, there's tons of weird little things in there that I'll have to consider for the project. The chicks from Pinball Land have separate entries from Crack-Tweet's Dream Land 2 appearance despite many sources calling them one in the same, there are like 4 Dark Matter entries that confuse me, the many "Twin" mid-boss encounters are treated as separate characters, and I'm once again tormented by the fact that apparently the Togezo from Adventure and the Togezo from Dream Land 3 are two separate beings..... hrmmmghh ok tangent over lol) (I'm always happy to get questions about the project btw ty!!!)

Name: Rolling Turtle
Debut: Kirby’s Adventure
If you are a Kirby Fan, you may already know what this is all about! Rolling Turtle is sort of a laughingstock. A poor shmuck. It is just not Rolling Turtle’s day. It has not been for nearly 30 years, and probably never will be again. Sorry!
Tumblr media
I don’t think Rolling Turtle did anything wrong. It is just a funny creature. A goofy turtle, and even sillier in the sprite, where it is oh so round, its shell making up most of its shape! The buck teeth are silly, too, and make me think of a turtle’s egg tooth, which I like to think about. Rolling Turtle is capable of rolling, and it rolls indeed. It rolls to, and even fro! It can grab Kirby and roll back and forth, or it can even throw little projectiles!
Tumblr media
The projectiles are, these! What are they? Well...
Tumblr media
Babies! Little Rolling Turtles! These are so funny. I know that’s PROBABLY not just one eye, and is probably meant to be a shine effect, but it looks so much like just one eye. They easily COULD have put two little eyes there!
Tumblr media
See? Easy. Now I kind of want to think that is one eye, actually. Anyway, Rolling Turtle throws its own babies as an attack which is certainly nothing new for video game enemies, and nothing shocking for the Kirby series, occurring with other mid-bosses in this very game, who are doing just fine today. This could not have been Rolling Turtle’s crime. Don’t worry. I will get to Rolling Turtle’s ambiguous crime.
Tumblr media
While not criminal, this room in Kirby’s Adventure is certainly infamous! An optional Rolling Turtle confrontation in an extremely basic square room, but with some water covering the ground, making moving quite inconvenient. Keep in mind that this is optional, though. You’re the one who decides whether to barge in and challenge Rolling Turtle. Maybe this is even its house! Maybe it sleeps in this water. Maybe it sleeps with the fishes. Okay, now for the main thing!
Tumblr media
There have been a few enemies in the Kirby series who have been replaced in remakes by new enemies that fulfill the same role. These all have reasonable enough reasons, I think. Bounder probably looked too much like a weird human infant, so it was replaced by Gip, the winged pig blob. Togezo was very similar to Spiny, and nearly IDENTICAL to an enemy from Gimmick!, and was replaced by Needlous, the spiky larva (who also happens to strongly resemble a Gimmick! enemy!). Capsule J looked a whole lot like the title character of Konami’s Twinbee series, so it was replaced by Capsule J2 (who was later replaced by Capsule J3, just to keep up tradition). These all make sense! But there’s someone else who was replaced.
Tumblr media
That’s right! Rolling Turtle was replaced by Phan Phan, a spherical elephant who behaves identically, and throws apples instead of turtles! This change I don’t get. What was wrong with Rolling Turtle? I don’t think anything! I don’t have anything against Phan Phan, but I don’t have anything against Rolling Turtle, either. Poor creature. Erased from history. Sleeping with the fishes. And by that I mean, the fishes from Dream Land 1 who were also erased! But, like with that case, I have a theory.
Tumblr media
This replacement occurred in Nightmare in Dream Land, the remake of Kirby’s Adventure. This game was released close to the time of Right Back At Ya, the Kirby anime, and that was a pretty big thing for the series! The American commercial is in the anime style, and is pretty stupid. Look at this. Kracko is so small. Chilly is so large. Bugzzy does not use weapons in any of the games. Chef Kawasaki is not even in this game at all! Not that I don’t love seeing him, but this is false advertising!
Tumblr media
I bring this all up because Phan Phan appears in the anime, mainly just for one episode, where it befriends Kirby and eats apples. Maybe Phan Phan was originally made for the anime first, and added to the game as a bit of a reference/cross promotion? It would certainly explain the game version’s throwing of apples, which seem like a weird choice of projectile for an elephant.
Anyway, that is the story of Rolling Turtle, who was taken from us too soon. I don’t feel anything too strongly toward Rolling Turtle as a design or character, but did it really deserve this? It didn’t do anything bad. Babies as weapons is fine. But alas. I make this exact joke once more.

> Ask about military experience
“I shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes of your time, sir. Now, could you give me a brief summary of any military history you may have?” I asked. Nox shuffled slightly. “What does that have to do with someone going missing?” He responded flatly. “The missing person in question was a member of a unit stationed here during the war when they disappeared. I’m trying to make sure you didn’t know each other.” He seemed to accept that answer.
“I was a soldier, not high ranking. Got out on serious injury and didn’t get back in.” I noted what he said in my notebook and waited a moment for him to continue. He didn’t. It seemed I’d need to be a bit more direct with my questions. “How long did you serve?” “50 years, give or take.” Another note. “When were you discharged?” “Roughly 150 years ago.” Hm, a bit before Marcus went missing, but it was a rough estimate. “Any family with military ties?” “No.” That... was a bit forceful. He was hiding something, though I couldn’t be clear as to what yet.
I cleared my throat and continued. “Did you participate in combat situations?” “What sort of question is that? Of course I did. How else did you think I was wounded?” There was an edge in his voice when he said that. “How were you wounded?” His expression shifted into a hint of a frown. “Why do you need to know that? What could that possibly have to do with who you’re looking for?” Luckily, I was prepared for this. “The missing person was a field doctor rather than a soldier and could have quite possibly tended to you. If you knew them, it will be invaluable to hear what you remember of them.” Nox huffed, but seemed to accept my answer.
“I was wounded by a Dark Matter possessed Togezo when they sent a spike through my right foot. A fellow soldier was able to fend them off, but the damage was done. I still walk with a limp. Does that answer your question?” I nodded, making more notes. He didn’t hesitate on his explanation, but at the same time it seemed almost... rehearsed. I noted that, too. “Were you familiar with any of the medical personnel?” “No, I didn’t speak to them much.” That was fair enough.
“What planets did you defend during the war?” “Aquarius, Halfmoon, Caverna, and Misteen. Last station was on Halfmoon.” I looked up. “Not here?” “No.” Hmm. Some things matched, but others definitely didn’t. Of course, he could very well be lying to me and I was fairly certain he was, though whether it concerned his identity or not was still to be seen.

,Togezo!
A soul lost to time... Togezo debuts as the one and only provider of the Needle ability in Kirby's Adventure, and would continue providing the Needle ability in a few other games, including Dream Course and Dream Land 3. That would be the unfortunate end of Togezo's appearances however, as in Adventure's remake, Togezo's role was replaced by a new enemy, Needlous! Now I love Needlous to death, but it is sad to see any Kirby enemy outright replaced. Luckily it hasn't happened too many times, but I wonder what Togezo did to deserve it! It may be due to the enemy's clear basis on Spiny from Super Mario Bros, as even their name is just the Japanese name for Spiny. I still think they're distinct enough to still make appearances, and it's not like Kirby has to worry about copyright issues with Mario characters. Mario is IN multiple Kirby games anyways. Regardless, perhaps they just wanted to design something more original to use in the games following Nightmare in Dream Land? Needlous has made a solid amount of reappearances at this point. Well, the Needle ability reappears in Forgotten Land, so maybe we'll see how many Needle enemies they decide to bring back! Maybe Needlous, maybe Togezo, maybe Tick, maybe some unexpected choices like Punc and Spikey! Or maybe even.....
