I'm so glad Scott Gimple, Danai Gurira, and Andrew Lincoln all understood that it would be terrible to end "The Ones Who Live" with Rick and/or Michonne dying.

I was worried they would die - not because that would have made any narrative sense, but because The Walking Dead unfortunately did that kind of thing far too many times.

That was actually the main reason I stopped watching the show years before it ended - because TWD kept killing off characters for shock value in a very nonsensical and dissatisfying way, such as:

-Beth dying after an elaborate arc that should have led to the show exploring her newly skeptical/hardened outlook instead of just leading to her death.

-Tyreese dying right after coming to the conclusion he wanted to live and still had hope during his fevered hallucinations.

-Noah and Siddiq dying pointless deaths not long after a main character (Beth and Carl) died specifically to save them - making the original deaths meaningless.

-Glenn actually dying not long after the show faked his death.

-Carl dying...Carl dying!!! I wasn't even watching the show at that point and thought that was the stupidest decision in the world, when the main story always revolved around Rick trying to protect and build a life for his son. 😭💔

So anyway, I get why myself and so many others were worried about Rick or Michonne (or both) dying, because TWD has burned us many times before. So I'm really thankful they gave these amazing characters the happy ending they - and we - deserved!

What The Ones Who Live has made abundantly clear is that finding Rick and bringing him home was a mission fit for Michonne, and Michonne alone. Because Rick didn’t just need to be brought back home - he needed to be brought back to life.

Sure, other characters could have located him and tried to rescue him from the CRM, but Rick needed more than a rescue…he was in need of a resurrection. And there’s only one person on the planet capable of doing that for him and it’s his wife, the love of his life, Michonne Grimes.

Rick is a man who for all intents and purposes chose to die because he couldn’t see her face anymore and started to believe he never would again. He was only ever going to come alive again when her eyes, her presence, her heart was back in his life. He was only ever going to be free from not just the literal but mental shackles of the CRM when he could hold her in his arms again and reconnect with the woman whose heartbeat he shares.

I love how this story stayed consistent to the message that was true in the main show as well, and that’s that Rick needs Michonne. And Michonne needs him too. Rick’s relationship with Michonne is the one dynamic in his life where he’s poured into as equally and deeply and lovingly as he pours into her. Where he doesn’t have to be anything but himself. It’s the one relationship that can bring him back time and time again no matter the circumstances.

Richonne is a love supreme because they are two halves of one heart. So saving him - not just in body but in heart, mind, and soul - it could only ever have been her. 😌

Every time I see this scene I immediately think of this—

There's a lot of talk about Rick and RJ and how they interacted and how the actors played the scene, but my eyes keep gravitating to Michonne in this moment. The way she presents RJ to Rick is just so... like she's nervous and proud and trying to process the fact that her son is finally able to meet his father and the love of her life is finally able to meet the manifestation of their bond.

i hope all the “bros” that wanted the crm to be the biggest storyline are disappointed in the finale, cause the way they don’t understand the fact that the crm in a subplot to the main plot of richonnes love story is so utterly dumb when that’s how it’s been advertised. you can feel like it was rushed, sure. but overall we got what was advertised and honestly it was an amazing ending of a man finding his family, just like how it was in the first place.
