This week, we have six recs for fics that either are an alternative telling of travelercon or otherwise take place on Rumblecusp! Check them out underneath the cut, and don't forget to comment or kudos if you like them!
A Favor Accepted by SanJoinedtheRecinCorps (211727, General) Reccer's Content Notes: Graphic Depictions of Violence
A canon divergence from ep97, this incredible fic showcases our beloved Shadowgast as Essek learns how to have friends. And of course, it’s Essek at Travelercon!
Reccer says: This is a fantastic story and well written. There’s already so much wonderful story and there’s still some to tell!
Tumblr media
The Joys and Perils of Field Research by bob_fish, enemytosleep (28619, Explicit) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
Caleb and Essek try (and largely fail) to make time on Rumblecusp, but their friends are very nosy.
Reccer says: It's a great comedy of errors, and the scene between Essek and Artagan is one of my favorite scenes out of any CR fanfic I've read to date.
Tumblr media
I know there's something (in the wake of your smile) by professor (5272, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
It’s a lovely morning on the island of Rumblecusp, and Caleb is forgetting something. But it can’t be anything too important … right?
Reccer says: Funny and sweet
Tumblr media
Fell in love with the fire long ago by quinn_of_aebradore (3680, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
This is a future and there is peace. And it begins one night, during a visit to Rumblecusp.
Reccer says: so soft and sweet
Tumblr media
Something Tragic About You by literalfuckinggarbage (44807, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: Graphic Depictions of Violence, suicidal ideation
What if Caleb lost his memories on Rumblecusp, then turned to Essek for help?
Reccer says: A delight from beginning to end, with some fun twists and turns along the way - I especially love Verin's insertion into all of this.
Tumblr media
To Have Owned The Sun by Dragonslaeyr (59213, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
They say the crumbling town on the island of Rumblecusp had a name once, but the signage was washed out to sea years ago. Caleb Widogast—healthy, healing, and currently a little directionless—only wants to know why nobody in this strange town seems to have heard of Essek Thelyss—arrogant, arcanist, and the man Caleb is half in love with—especially seeing as he's been living there for years.
Reccer says: It's cozy, atmospheric and a very sweet mystery
Tumblr media
Aeor is for Lovers is an 18+ Shadowgast Discord server. The above fanfic recommendations were pulled from our community for this weekly event. All fics, unless otherwise specified, will primarily feature Shadowgast. Have any questions about what this is? Check out the FAQ! Next week, we’ll be back with one of our recurring weeks: Older Favorites!

[ CAMPAIGN 2, EPISODE 108 ]
[ EMPIRE KIDS SAFETY MEETING, TRAVELERCON EVE ]
BEAU: Maybe not vigilante justice. Maybe we do it all above the board.
CALEB: Sure.
VETH: How would— you mean, work for your organization?
BEAU: Maybe.
VETH: You’re gonna deputize us?
BEAU: Can I do that?
VETH: I think maybe?
BEAU: I think I can. I think we just decided that I can. Yeah, I could do that, yeah…. We’re not like the guard, by the way. We’re like, librarians. I just want to point that out. So you could be like, deputized librarians.
VETH: I must admit, we’ve been talking about your organization for a lot of this “campaign” or whatever you call it. But I don’t know very much about it at all.
BEAU: It’s pretty enigmatic, yeah. We have like a god, Ioun. Yeah, totally… I’m technically kinda like a religious person, it’s just like whatever.
CALEB: You are like a cleric, then.
BEAU: No… I’m not like that at all. It’s just like, um… you know, like, um… like Platinum Dragon School? Or like
CALEB: Yah.
BEAU: It’s like, Ioun School.
CALEB: I’ve only ever seen you reverse-heal people.

I’m not sure why, but I personally haven’t seen much widojest content with TravelerCon?
so anyway here have this :D
He does not know how it’s not glaringly obvious now, with every new movement of his hands, every component he spends trying to paint her vision in the most vibrant colors possible. Suggestions keep spilling out of his mouth, because he wants to see her eyes light up in excitement as she thinks through the spectacle that is slowly coming into being around them. Everything she says, he gives due consideration; he does not dismiss anything out of hand. (Except the human sacrifice idea. That was perhaps a bit much, he thinks. Even if it was only a trick.)
He shows her his idea for the beach, the green-cloaked trickster beckoning new arrivals underneath his arch as illusory creatures draw the eye up toward the volcano, and her eyes go round in perfect delight. She hugs him and tells him it’s even better than anything she could have imagined. He smiles quietly, and continues to think of ways to keep that breathless excitement in her eyes.
She appears on the stage, arms spread wide, smoke billowing all around her and magical mirror images of herself at her sides. She is impressive, but she could cut a more fantastical figure, so he gestures in the air, and beautiful butterfly wings unfold behind her and her duplicates, decorated with the symbols of her god (and the moon, because it’s all about that subliminal messaging). She is breathtaking, and he feels an ache in his chest as her surprised smile brightens.
There is a man in the crowd whose eyes are not on the high priestess. They are fixed on him, instead, and there is a strange expression on the stranger’s face. The man gives a little flick of his finger, and a twisting throne of vines grows out of the stage, catching the keynote speaker and lifting her into the air, curling protectively around her form. She lets out one surprised laugh and then plays it off as the crowd oohs and ahhs below her.
The stranger sends him a sort of satisfied look, letting out a little hmph and turning back toward the stage, a distinct fey-green gleam in his eye.
Ah. He’s made her god jealous.
He smirks.
She realizes that some of her plans may not align with nature after the celebration begins, sending her into a momentary flurry of panic, and he promises to hang the moon in the sky for her, to keep it all together. Her gratitude makes him flush and duck his head.
He knows Yasha would be giving him pitying looks, if there were not so much going on.

the cult of the traveler
i cant get “the cult of dionysus” by the orion experience out of my head, and i keep imagining it w/ the nein and the travelercon arc.
like...  “So let's make a decision, start a new religion Yeah, we're gonna build a temple to our love“
jes and arty spreading word of the traveler throughout the world
and just like... imagining the two of them singing in the place of the two people there
Jester: I'm feeling devious Traveler: You're looking glamorous Jester: Let's get mischievous Traveler: And polyamorous Both: Wine and women and wonderful vices Welcome to the cult of Dionysus
and like their hubris later when trying to pretend to be sehanine:
“Or start a secret society for the wild and free Our ideology is ‘You can do what you want Too much is never enough’ We are the Life, we are the light We are the envy of the gods above”
i love them so so so so much and i miss them a ton

Whenever one of my dogs grumbles at me about anything I say to them “Hey! Who’s Rumblecusp?” and they don’t respond because they’re a dog and they don’t get that the word “grumble” is too close to a CR-ism for me to not acknowledge it.

Actually loving how the different critical role campaigns exist in relation to themselves, each other, and the world at large, and how their different narrative structures ripple outward.
Campaign 1 was story driven. Not to say the characters weren’t deeply important and dynamic, but their growths were largely driven through and by the plot. They were on a mission and grew along with that mission, and as a mission driven archetypically heroic party they also left very few loose threads by the end.
Campaign 2, meanwhile, was more insular and character driven. Where Vox Machina traveled all over the world and planes outside the main setting of Tal'Dorei, the Mighty Nein largely stayed in Wildemount, allowing for a more intimate and political look at it’s cultures. Instead of story and characters revolving around plot, plot revolves around character. We only got to see Yasha’s tribe in the epilogue, because her growth didn’t require facing them. We didn’t face Uk’otoa, because Fjord’s arc culminated in embracing the Wildmother, not in facing his former patron. Similarly, while the entire Assembly was an antagonistic force, only Trent was dealt with directly, because he was the only one directly tied into one of the pc's arcs.
The larger world building let us know about Molaesmyr and Ludinus, about the Luxon, even about Ruidus to some extent, but the Mighty Nein weren’t a typically heroic party here to save the world and solve every mystery, but a group of broken people finding it in themselves to heal, and to end their journey ready to face greater threats in the future. They were still getting the Assembly and Uk'toa, they just weren’t doing it in the main narrative, because they were irrelevant to the growth of the characters. Of course, that also left a lot of threads hanging, which brings us to campaign 3.
By now, it seems pretty clear that campaign 3 is another plot driven story rather than the more meandering, character driven narrative of c2. That leaves the cast free to pick up on the many larger mysteries in world building left in the wake of the last campaign. What is the nature of the Luxon? Of Ruidus? Of Aeor and the aeormatons? Half the party was just plopped down not far from the ruins of Molaesmyr, Ludinus' former home - will they go there? One of them is tied to the Luxon and dunamancy, another to Ruidus and Predathos - will we get to know the true nature of these entities?
Much like c1, the characters of this campaign are driven and shaped by events rather than shaping their own events. The difference is, c1 began as a blank slate, whereas c3 has history. Powerful allies and enemies alike are tied to former campaigns because such is the nature of the world. Mysteries left to solve were introduced earlier but approached only now because this is a campaign whose narrative and characters are served by approaching them. The world is dynamic. Alive. One story merges into the next, and new heroes are born on the shoulders of the last, ready to be shaped by their own narrative.

14: explaining the whole not-dead thing
Beau shrugs. “He cut me off when I tried to bring it up when he dropped Eadwulf off, right before TravelerCon.”
“TravelerCon?”
“Long story,” Wulf grumbles. “They’re all insane.”

So I’m pretty confident they’ll keep in crushes of even the non cannon pairings (if Keyleth being her twin crushing self in TLOVM is any indication), but if any part of Widojest gets downplayed I will be disappoint...

Some of my absolute favorite Critical Role moments are the ones where Matt has had to move the group on from a funny moment, but individual players are still having silent breakdowns to themselves, and it usually jumps around and takes a few out before they are able to collect themselves, but meanwhile Matt trudges on
You don’t get to experience this magic if you only audio stream, and it’s even subtle on video sometimes because everyone is hiding their faces to avoid pulling someone else back in and ruin the moment. I must start a compendium, for science
C2 EP107, 3:27:15 - Liam invents “let chaos reign *dick-waving gesture*” and a full minute after Matt has had to reel it in, Travis is wiping away tears
(to be continued… please rb if you catch one)
