Meet a folkie! 💚

Mads Kjøller-Henningsen is a multi-instrumentalist, and among the hardest working folkies in Denmark. He is active in the Danish / Swedish / Finnish band Floating Sofa Quartet, the legendary Lars Lilholt Band, medieval boy band Pøbel, folk music big band Spöket i Köket, the troll band Trolska Polska, and others.

In addition, he teaches at the folk music line at the conservatory in Esbjerg, he is a studio musician - and he dances like a dream.

KDHX, “Music from the Hills,” 25 June 2017 (Danish Music)

I like to do a Scandinavian show every summer as a respite from the heat of St. Louis.  Today as 84 F with shockingly low humidity, so it wasn’t quite as needed.  Still, it’s a nice style of music and over the years, I’ve been interested in parsing Swedish (my entry point), Finnish, Norwegian, and Danish.  The last is not as prevalent but quite charming in its different voicing; it is very Scandinavian and yet softer, if you will.  I have a treasured sampler which I relied on heavily (and could use with impunity as it provided explanation of the root albums).

I liked starting with Donningens Livstykke’s “Norsk Schottis” as it was Danes doing what Norwegians think Scottish music should sound like.  DL were a Danish version of Fairport Convention/Steeleye Span, doing traditional grounded folk rock.  Trolska Polska has a similar vibe.I also relied on Phonix who were my entry into the music years and years ago.  They were one of several bands, Morild and UJC Quintet, which were freer or at least jazzier with the tradition.

And, in their own way, the Danish String Quartet took the tradition in yet another direction.But there was plenty of straight up fiddle music too.

When listening to a lot of electronic music, its difficult to determine which beat or sound has was created by which person, or if it was just someone doing it on their own. It can be so nice to listen to ‘traditional’ music every once in a while, because you clearly hear all the different instruments and you almost feel the togetherness and the fun that these people have, playing together. The emotion becomes even stronger when you’ve recently seen them play live, and you still remember their happy faces <3
