The Weird Botany of Socotra Island
Tumblr media
Dragon's Blood Tree on Socotra Island Protected Areas, Socotra, Yemen (picture by Rod Waddington on Wikimedia)
Socotra Island is an island in the Arabian Sea with some famously weird plants. It is a part of the Socotra Island Protected Areas and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Socotra has many endemic birds, reptiles, and a bat specie, but is by far most known for its alien-like plants. Why are these plants so unique? Just like many islands, it is isolated and the plants who are on this island have been on it for a long time. These plants and animals are also a part of a unique ecosystem, the Socotra Island xeric shrublands, so they have unique environmental conditions that require adaptations. The island is stunning and very sadly at risk due to over development, over tourism, and climate change.

Shibam - This ~1,700-year-old walled city in Yemen is considered to be the oldest vertically constructed city in the world. Its trapezoidal buildings (most were built in the 16th century) are made of mud bricks and need constant maintenance due to rain and wind erosion.

A look at Pakistan's historical heritage and world UNESCO side Mohenjo Daro
A look at #Pakistan's #historical heritage and #world #UNESCO side Mohenjo Daro A thread ⬇️
Standing on the highest brick platform in Mohenjo-daro’s fort district, just a few steps from a second-century Buddhist stupa, it’s impossible not to feel awe at the sheer scale and complexity of the prehistoric city around you. It takes a moment to grasp the fact that what you’re seeing is more than 4,500 years old, one of the oldest—if not the oldest—known settlements in the entire history of…
