Out of Line of Sight: mysterymanjoseph and invisibleforcefields
It has happened again, subcontractors that work for Joseph's corporation overseas have been taken hostage. Joseph wonders if the world has gone more insane, or is he just seeing it more now that he is no longer in the Marines, you have a tendency to have tunnel vision when in a combat zone. Circumstances being what they are, Joseph activates his mercenary force, the secretly restored and upgraded WWII aircraft carrier, USS Hornet, the pride of his force, has deployed of the coast of Spain, along with the converted cargo ship, now troop transport and helicopter carrier, Tripoli. Huey troop transport helicopters, AH-1 Cobra gunships, and a Chinook, lift off, carrying Joseph, and his force to the small town where his people are being held. Off the deck of Hornet, F4U Corsair fighters, fly top cover, as Douglas Skyraiders will await the call to come in and give close air support for the force. Joseph checks his watch as the helicopters now fly over the beach, heading inland, thinking, "Well, the local and national police force, and whatever military presence should be pulling back and out of the way,....amazing what a few gold ingots, with some silver coins thrown in, can do when put in the right hands."

USS Constitution in Boston, MA celebrated its 226th anniversary yesterday, marking the day October 21st, 1797 as the moment of her launching. Some thirty years ago I produced this one of a kind wood diorama of her crew members -circa the War of 1812. But prior to that she had her first engagement in Tripoli c.1805.
So many people from all walks of life enjoyed viewing this work, so before I sell it I feel it's best to reach another audience on the social networks. The video can be viewed here https://youtube.com/watch?v=wv0_HC0cwrM .

Fascinated by this Trek question on Quora:
Tumblr media
Mostly just the implication that there are eras where that isn't the norm for humans. Maybe this person is from the Logan's Run era, where no-one lives past 30 (actually just 21 in the book I believe). Or from that species in Voyager that ages backwards.
But to answer; firstly, Data isn't actually that old in TNG. Just checking my Star Trek chronology, Data was found by the USS Tripoli in 2338, and TNG starts in 2364. So probably only late 20's/early 30's at the most.
Secondly, and this is a big one; Data isn't human. Indeed, Brent Spiner wanted the character killed-off in the movies, aware that while he, as a human actor, was getting older, Data as an android really shouldn't.
Then when he came back in Picard they just made up some nonsense to explain Data getting older and having a few gray hairs now.

Headcanon: Why Data Had Never Painted Until Geodri Taught Him
USS Tripoli
The Tripoli was the ship which found and reactivated Data. It was aboard the Tripoli that he first became self aware. However, he had very little further opportunity for self discovery, as the Captain regulated that he only be activated when accompanied by one of the crew - at all other times, he was switched off and kept in a designated storage cupboard. While a few members of the crew were kind to him, few saw him as a legitimate being and therefore he wasn't encouraged to pursue any sort of hobbies or interests. Whenever he did show interest, he was reminded that he was an android and did not need such outlets.
Starfleet Academy
Here, while Data excelled in his studies, he failed at socialization. His time on the Tripoli had taught him very little about how to interact with other sentients as equals. While he wanted to experience making friends, as he saw his classmates do, he neither knew how now expected that they would want an android as a friend. This lack of interaction resulted in very few opportunities for exploring interests. He did spend a great deal of time in the library, setting a record for the most books ever checked out by any cadet in history, and exploring San Francisco.
Outposts
Data worked at a series of outposts, research centers, and starbases between 2345 and 2360. Most were lightly crewed, the remote or dangerous postings that most other officers would resist, and he was often the only crew member of these bases. It was during this time that he was promoted from ensign to lieutenant, although he suspects that the reason was so that he would no longer require a supervising officer on site.
USS Trieste
The Trieste was Data's first posting on a starship, shortly after being promoted to lt. commander. There, however, he had few opportunities for any personal time as, discovering that he needed neither rest nor sleep resulted in the Captain booking him for every shift. He worked almost non-stop in the years that he was posted on that ship. The one exception, the one 'holiday', each year was an annual cybernetics conference at which he was always a featured speaker. It was at one of these conferences that he met Geordi, who went out of his way to befriend him. They continued a correspondence and, in one of those letters, Geordi promised to teach him how to paint, a promise kept once they were both assigned to the Enterprise.
Excerpts from those letters...
Data, sent 0131, Stardate 129348.02: Geordi, while I appreciate your encouragement, I do no believe that I would be capable of performing the specified task. Art is considered an expression of inner feeling. While I could produce a reasonable facsimile, it would lack that ineffable quality of expression.
La Forge, sent 0803, Stardate 129361.68: That's ridiculous and I think you know it. You're too used to snapping your fingers and instantly knowing something. Art isn't like that. It's something you have to learn, have to practice. I think you could, you just need someone to teach you.
Data, sent 0906, Stardate 129362.02: In what way would snapping my fingers produce knowledge of any kind?

This Day in History: USS Philadelphia destroyed
On this day in 1804, Navy legend Stephen Decatur escapes from a harbor in Tripoli. Mere hours earlier, he’d led a mission to set a captured United States frigate ablaze.
Decatur’s feat has been called the “most bold and daring act of the age.” But why would a United States naval officer set an American ship on fire?
The audacious stunt occurred during the First Barbary War, soon after USS Philadelphia ran into an uncharted reef and was captured by the Tripolitans. She was a valuable prize! Once repaired, she would be the Barbary states’ most powerful warship. Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy had only one remaining ship as powerful as the one they’d lost: USS Constitution.
The story continues here: https://www.taraross.com/post/tdih-burning-uss-philadelphia

Door no. 16 and today a very old lady shows up - but please do not believe that she is harmless. Her name "Old Ironside" is not without reason. I think you know who you have here - of course it's USS Constitution

USS Constitution, photo by Petty Officer 3rd Class Skyler Okerman, 2022
A few more infos about her:
Constitution, warship renowned in American history. One of the first frigates built for the U.S. Navy, she was launched in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 21, 1797; she is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat. (The HMS Victory is older (1765) but is preserved in a drydock at Portsmouth, England.)
The Constitution’s overall length is 204 feet (62 metres), its displacement is 2,200 tons, and its gun range is 1,200 yards (1,100 metres). The bolts fastening its timbers and copper sheathing on the bottom were made by the silversmith and patriot Paul Revere. Rated as a 44-gun frigate, it ordinarily carried more than 50 guns and a crew of some 450. Original cost of the vessel exceeded $300,000, including guns and equipment. In the successful war against the Tripoli pirates (1801–05), the Constitution was Commodore Edward Preble’s flagship, and the treaty of peace was signed aboard it. During the War of 1812 it achieved an enduring place in American naval tradition. On August 19, 1812, commanded by Captain Isaac Hull, it won a brilliant victory over the British frigate Guerriere. Tradition has it that during this encounter the American sailors, on seeing British shot failing to penetrate the oak sides of their ship, dubbed it “Old Ironsides.” Several other victories added to its fame. When in 1830 the ship was condemned as unseaworthy and recommended for breaking up, public sentiment was aroused by Oliver Wendell Holmes’s poem “Old Ironsides.”
The ship was preserved, its rebuilding was provided for in 1833, and in 1844 it began a circumnavigation of the globe. The Constitution was removed from active service in 1882, and in 1905 it was opened to the public in Boston Harbor. After a restoration (1927–31) the ship was recommissioned; although it did not sail under its own power, it called at 90 American ports on both coasts and was visited by more than 4.5 million people. Since 1934 it has been based at the Charlestown Navy Yard (now part of the Boston National Historic Park).
In celebration of its bicentennial, the newly renovated Constitution sailed again in July 1997. It also sailed in August 2012 to mark the 200th anniversary of its victory over the Guerriere during the War of 1812.
