Doremy's Pillow Advert

For my second piece I wrote for @gensokyozine, I came up with lyrics for the an advertisement for Doremy's Sweet Sleep Pillow From Alternative Facts in Eastern Utopia. If you haven't already go check out the fanzine full of touhou fanart and fanfics!

Don't you miss the dreams you’ve had at night? The fervent feeling from sleeping tight? Well I got the perfect thing to show! The amazing Sweet Sleep Pillow! Throw away that lump left on your bed! What I have is better for your head! You’ll feel like you’re sleeping on a bubble! My new pillow brings no trouble! Ahhhh… Just one warning… You may feel there’s no need to wake up again! To avoid such depravity Dreams are born of reality Don’t neglect your physical body Lest your dream-self turns quite naughty Oh but the kids will love it so! My design makes their eyes glow! With a cute tapir and a comfy frill, Yes this pillow’s all the thrill! Your dreams will be an exquisite delight! And you'll rise feeling just right! With my loving care, I’ve woven and spun, Sweet Sleep Pillow, number 1!

First off, the Illustration was wonderfully dreamt up by one @lemon-dokuro who also goes by Hanamarupoko! It's quite the vivid imagery wouldn't you say? He also drew his own fanart for the zine so make sure you check it out!

In case it wasn't obvious, the lyrics are meant to be sung to the rhythm of Doremy's theme, Eternal Spring Dream. (Starting around the 20 seconds into the song and I did take a few liberties here and there.) Believe it or not, the first and last part of the lyrics were what was written first. I tried to put in as many references I could find, such as stating the pillow is "number 1" being a reference to the questionnaire doremy did for her customers how good the pillow is at a range of 1-5 with 1 being the best ranking. I'll leave it a mystery what the other references could be, some are obvious, some not, but I don't think there's anything that could be too hard to figure out.

If there's anything anybody wants to ask or make a general statement about my zine pieces please do not hesitate to do so! Oh! And if anyone suddenly has the urge to sing and record these lyrics I'd love to hear it!

Three days until the release of Welcome to Gensokyo, a free digital zine with a zillion collaborators, including from me a 10 page color comic titled The Gladdest Thing Under the Sun, in which Yuuka talks about some of her favorite flowers.

It was a lot of fun and a good learning experience to hang out with a bunch of Touhou artists and writers and push to get this done. I know I’m looking forward to sitting and looking closely at what everyone else did on the project, and I hope you’ll enjoy, too.

I participated in @gensokyozine and wrote two small poetic pieces. Please go check them out! There's so many amazing fanart and fanfics for the touhou franchise made by amazingly talented people!

Below is my first piece I did for them, a Haiku written in the perspective of the character Reisen Udongein Inaba!

From pure lunacy To impure prison of clay Heavy are my sins Selfish my actions My comrades I’ve abandoned To die while I live The regret lingers Even after all this time I desire closure Yet I can’t return I’m no longer of that world This I understand Decades have passed Hiding away from the world But now things have changed I’m of the Earth now My home of fellow sinners And of my masters Together burdened Yearning for the way things were Just like humans do So here I shall stay Until the moment I die I hold this burden

I've actually been wanting to write something like this for quite a while and the zine gave me an opportunity to really push me to write it! While writing this I had the song "The Sea Where One's Home Planet Reflects" on loop. To me, despite it being basically a more calm version of Junko's theme, it represents the characters you play as in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, especially Reisen. Cause even though she's from the moon, the moon's sea reflecting the earth is reflecting Reisen's new home. I also took inspiration from Reisen's story in Touhou 9, meeting the Yama and barring her sin from abandoning her people despite how she was fleeing for her life. And lastly I feel a somewhat personal connection to Reisen's situation, I've had to move quite a lot in my youth so the friends I've made in the past I can't pretty much anymore and I've been stuff wanting to be with them again for a while that it's prevented me from making friends where I am now. But I've recently grown past that point in my life and I'm reaching out much more, and come to appreciate the gift that is my present!

zine samples for Welcome to Gensokyo

I’m doing a piece for Welcome to Genzokyo, a Touhou Project zine scheduled for release in June, titled “The Gladdest Things Under the Sun”. I’m slightly more than halfway through right now, which hopefully puts me right on schedule.

Here’s a page from the start of the story, plus my character design sheets. Actually, Yuuka gets a lot more costumes in this story, but I only bothered to work out her classic outfit.
