ethan hates when he has to leave you for even a few days, so when he gets back, he has a little surprise planned
word count: 4.3k
warnings/tags: fluff, and then some smut to round it out WOO we goin through it today ladies and gents, harry styles (music) is involved :)
dedicated to my bruna bby ( @ethanhes ) who is so strong and the sweetest girly I know. I love you!!
feel free to send in requests! and check out my masterlist if you wanna :)
Like hell you were gonna make another trip - you slid the last grocery bag onto your arm, ignoring how they were digging into your skin as you started your walk into the house. If anyone had watched you try to navigate your way in the door, it probably would have been quite the sight. But you succeeded, emerging into an empty kitchen, heaving the heavy bags up onto the counter.
Usually, you’d yell down the hall, summon the boys to help you unpack. But it would be futile - no one was home. Not even Sterling was around - the three of them were off on Wakeheart business, at the factory in Arizona where everything was actually produced so they could approve all the candle production.
You’d gotten a few pictures from the trip - bright colorful sunsets, Grayson and Sterling smiling from across the table at breakfast. But your favorites were the stupid little selfies he kept sending. Your phone buzzed in your pocket as if on cue.
Another snapchat from Ethan, this time of him with a metal straw trapped between his teeth and big smile on his face. Adorable, as always.
cold brew mood. miss you x was the caption that flitted across the screen. You screenshotted it just in time. The next buzz was a text from him.
:(
why you screenshot
cause you looked cute
send me one back, I miss you
You rolled your eyes at that, deciding to make him wait for a minute while you started to put the groceries away. You’d only unpacked two bags before your phone buzzed again.
hey
show me ur face
omg gimme a minute 😂
im putting away the obscene amount of oat milk I just bought
DID THEY HAVE THE GOOD KIND
yep. bought three cartons
holy shit I love you
gray says he loves you too
but I love you more
You sent him a quick snapchat to appease him, unsurprised when you got the notification that he’d screenshotted it. He always got like this when he was away - even more clingy than usual, constantly wanting to communicate with you somehow. You had to admit, you loved the idea that you were always on his mind when he wasn’t with you, even if it did mean you felt like you were constantly on your phone.
what else are you doing today?
idk might lay out by the pool for a while
without me? 😔
you should go shopping
You frowned at your phone, looking at the few boxes of pasta you had left to put away before you typed back with a huff.
I literally just got back from the grocery what do u mean
not that kind of shopping
fun shopping. like for clothes
The thought was tempting - with everything going on, you hadn’t gotten anything new in months. To be fair though, you hadn’t really needed anything new - you were just hanging around the house anyways.
do you want me to go so I’ll stop wearing all your clothes
yes
kidding baby you know I don’t care. but you should get some new stuff, you deserve it! just use my card
I hate using your card
It wasn’t a lie. Ethan had gotten you a credit card linked to his personal account for emergencies almost six months ago, and you’d only used it a handful of times when he insisted. You never wanted him to ever think that you cared about him for his money.
I’d be buying whatever you find if I was there, it’s the same thing
You grinned to yourself, plan already hatching. He didn’t say what you had to buy. You’d just get something small - a pack of socks, or a basic tee - with his card, and pay for the rest of it yourself.
alright alright, fine
But his next text had you rolling your eyes. He knew you too well.
and you have buy real clothes. like at least one dress
Even though he wasn’t there to see it, your eyes squinted in accusation.
why a dress?
you’re being sus what’s this about
you’re so stubborn holy shit. I was gonna buy you dresses for the harry concert so I want you to pick some out for yourself
Damn. You’d almost forgotten that the concert was supposed to be that night. Ethan had bought the two of you tickets back when they went on presale, using his connections to get the two of you amazing seats. E had been almost as bummed as you when it got postponed, disappointed that the night he’d had planned for you had fallen through.
it got rescheduled to august baby, we can go shopping then!
i’m impatient
omg really? I had no idea
just go buy some dresses and send me pictures. we’re back at the factory, gotta go. I love you!
love you too!
Knowing that if you sat down you probably wouldn’t get back up, you turned back to the door with a sigh, grabbing your keys and wallet from where you’d just stowed them, heading back out to the car.
You climbed into Ethan’s Tesla, hitting your preset button on the door so the seat moved forward to where you could reach the pedals. He always insisted you take his car if he couldn’t drive you, always wanting you to be the safest you could be. It was still a bit intimidating to drive something so expensive, but you did it anyways, heading to the mall that housed most of your favorite stores with your mask on.
It turned out to be one of those days where nothing caught your eye. You really looked, scoured through the racks, hoping to find anything that looked remotely appealing or like your style. You even tried on a few that you had hopes for, but they were a bust.
Feeling defeated you stopped for a while and got some coffee, sitting and people watching as everyone passed in their masks. Your eyes wandered to another store, one you rarely went into - it catered to your style perfectly, but everything was far out of your price range.
But looking couldn’t hurt. Right?
That backfired as soon as you walked in, smelled that perfect fragrance that seemed to dust all the soft fabrics in the place.
Before you knew what you’d done, you had so many options thrown over your arm that it was starting to ache.
You stopped looking, headed to a dressing room to try and narrow down your search. Some of them were automatic no’s, the cut not flattering or the color clashing with the undertones in your skin.
But there were three winners - a tight green one that hugged your curves, a casual denim overall number that would look adorable with the right shirt, and a blue sundress that tied into a bow at the back, the fabric brushing your upper thighs.
You snapped pictures in each one, knowing Ethan would help you decide. Your bet was on the green one - he was a man, after all. But his response just made you roll your eyes.
you look hot as fuck
buy all three
no
yes
they’re expensive
I didn’t ask how much they cost. You like them all. therefore, you buy them all
it’s simple really
ethan
y/n
just tell me which one is your favorite please
if you don’t buy all three i’m just gonna go back and buy them for you later
or I’ll order them and have them shipped to the house
stop
getting online now 😌
stop it
placing an order 😌 😌
ethan grant
last chance
fine
im sticking my tongue out at you. you can’t see it but I am
ouch, im hurt
are you headed home after you buy them?
well I’m sure as hell not spending anymore money, so yeah. why?
just wondering where my girl’s gonna be. drive safe. you took the tesla right?
of course I did.
good. hurry home. but don’t hurry too much. safety first
You quirked an eyebrow at the last text - he was being so odd. He’d only been gone for two days, usually it wasn’t this bad for him. Who knew what he’d be like tomorrow before he got home.
Changing back into your clothes in a hurry, you put your rejects out on the return rack and carried your three choices to the register, trying not to listen to the total before you put Ethan’s card in the reader.
You left the mall swiftly after that, trying to ignore the eyes on you. In reality, no one was probably looking at you, but you felt like everyone was staring as you carried your expensive bag and got in a fucking tesla. You never understood how Gray and E could walk around with such expensive things and not be fazed in the slightest.
The drive home took longer than you would have liked considering the traffic you got caught in, but you just turned your music up, humming along as you crawled down the road towards your exit. When you finally got there you let the tesla take over, pulling you off the interstate and starting down the smaller roads that led to the house.
Your first clue was when the song changed. At first you didn’t think much of it - you had every Harry song saved to your library, it wasn’t unusual for one to come up.
But then, one verse into Fine Line, it skipped, the intro of Two Ghosts starting. 30 seconds later? Falling started to play through the car.
“What the fuck?” You muttered, quickly switching off autopilot, afraid that the car may be glitching. It was only a few more minutes until you got to the house, and in that time the song switched again twice, all Harry songs.
When you pulled into the driveway and put the car in park, your phone buzzed with your second clue.
welcome home baby
omg are you watching the cameras? that’s creepy as fuck
also the tesla just got super weird but I swear I didn’t fuck up your car
just come inside
You obliged, grabbing your bag and heading into the house.
Clue number three was that the pasta boxes you’d left on the counter were gone, put away no doubt on the shelf that you couldn’t reach. You froze.
Someone was in the house.
You only had a moment to be scared before Ethan appeared around the corner, your favorite grin adorning his face.
“Boo.”
You dropped the bag, running the few steps it took to get to him before you threw your arms around him, breathing him in as he hugged you to him tightly.
“You guys weren’t supposed to be home until tomorrow!”
“Caught an early flight so I could surprise my girl. Gray and Ster are still in Arizona.” He leaned back so you could look at him, shrugging as if it was no big deal that he’d cut his trip short just to come home to see you.
“Didn’t you have stuff you needed to do?”
“No, we knocked it out today.”
“Then why didn’t Grayson come ba-”
His lips were on yours then, catching your words as he kissed you hard, a hand coming up to your cheek, thumb running over your cheekbone. “Are you gonna keep asking me questions, or are you gonna let me actually surprise you.”
“There’s more?” The butterflies that only he could bring fluttered in your stomach, and you bit your lip, looking up at him. He leaned down past you, reaching for the bag you’d dropped, placing it back in your hands.
“Maybe. Go put on one of your new dresses, then come out back.” He pressed a quick kiss to your lips before he let go. “Hurry.”
“Okay!” You were practically giddy as you hurried back to Ethan’s room, laying the dresses out on the comforter and trying to decide on one. It took a few minutes, a few switches of holding them up to you in the mirror before you settled on the blue sundress, situating the big sewed bow in the middle of your back. It had a built in bra that was surprisingly comfortable, making it the easiest choice.
Shoving your dresses back in the bag, you didn’t even bother with shoes. You just headed straight for the backyard - but you froze in the living room, taking in the sight through the doors.
The sun was setting on the horizon, painting the sky a baby purple, the clouds a pop of pink as they floated, scattered around. The city was starting to light up below you, and the moon hung high above it. But your eyes were on something - someone - entirely different.
Ethan was standing in the grass, wearing one of his nice pairs of shorts and a short sleeve patterned button down - you hadn’t even noticed his outfit earlier, you’d been too excited to see him. He was holding a bouquet of sunflowers in his hands, the petals bright yellow even in the dim light.
He caught sight of you through the glass and immediately hid the flowers behind his back as he stood up straight and smiled like a guy coming to the front door to pick you up for prom.
You pulled the door open, stepping out into the cool California air. It felt almost cold against your flushed cheeks as Ethan looked you up and down, letting out a low whistle.
You just laughed, stopping a few steps in front of him and waiting for whatever he had planned.
He whipped the flowers around with a grin, holding them out for you with one hand, leaving his other arm tucked behind him. “Happy concert night!”
What you didn’t see was the remote in his other hand. He clicked it with his thumb, and the whole back yard lit up. There were twinkling christmas lights lining the roof and wrapping around the tree to the side of the house. He’d brought out Grayson’s projector and pointed it at a white sheet he’d hung up - you watched it for a moment, laughing when you realized it was projecting a slideshow of the pictures you two had taken together over the last year. And finally, you noticed the speakers had turned on, starting to play one of your favorite songs. Sweet Creature.
“E-”
“I know it got rescheduled, and we’ll have so much fun when we go. But, I still wanted to make tonight special. So, it’s kinda just date night, but... Harry Styles edition?”
Closing the gap with a few steps you threw your arms around his neck, flowers and all, so you could kiss him.
“I love you so much,” were the only words you could find, and you hoped he knew how much you truly meant them.
“Love me enough to dance with me?”
You froze at that - you weren’t much of a slow dancer, and Ethan had even less experience than you did. But the thought of staying so close to him made your heart flutter, so you nodded, letting go for a moment so you could sit the flowers down safely in the grass.
He pulled you back into his arms, hands settling on your waist as yours went around his neck. His fingertips ghosted over the bare skin on your back below the bow, sending shivers up your spine.
It didn’t matter that Sweet Creature was a tiny bit fast for a slow dance - the two of you weren’t doing more than swaying back and forth anyways, foreheads touching, totally lost in each other.
He spun you a few times, even throwing in a little dip that made you both laugh before he kissed you, leaving you a bit breathless when he pulled you back up to standing.
“You bring me home,” he sang, slightly off pitch and so quiet you could barely hear, but it was so sweet that it even brought a few tears to your eyes. You blinked them away so you could see his face as you both smiled.
The energy picked up a bit as the songs continued to shuffle, Carolina coming on next. You both jumped around hand in hand, looking like total idiots you were sure, stomachs sore from laughing at and with each other by the end. You paused a few times throughout the next songs to watch the slideshow, laughing at some of the pictures he’d chosen, remembering the stories behind them.
When Sunflower came on, Ethan opened his arms again for a dance and you quirked an eyebrow.
“You know, Mr. Styles doesn’t have as many romantic songs as I thought he did. This one’s not bad though,” Ethan mumbled as the two of you swayed back and forth quickly, spinning around and around.
“This song isn’t even romantic, it’s about him missing his ex,” you explained.
“You analyzed those lyrics hard huh.”
“Oh don’t act like you haven’t dissected every Cudi song five times over.” You squinted your eyes at him in accusation and he just laughed.
“Touché, touché. Maybe the sunflowers weren’t the best Harry related gesture then huh.”
“I still think they’re beautiful,” you reassured him.
“Thought it would kinda be weird to give you a watermelon. Though, I guess that would have sent a much clearer message.”
The mischief in his eyes told you he knew exactly what that song was about.
“A little on the nose, don’t yah think?” You scrunched up your nose at him as if to prove your point. He reached out for your hand and you laced your fingers with his.
“Never.”
And then he was walking, half pulling half guiding you back into the house, through the glass doors, down the hallway, into the bedroom. Your skin was hot, partially from the change in temperature, partially from the hands that were wandering over your skin as soon as the door was closed.
Ethan’s hands traced down your arms, fingertips over skin, then over fabric when he got to your waist, further down to your thighs and then you were gasping as he found his way under your skirt. His hands spread out, large and commanding over your ass, resting there for a moment, squeezing before he moved north, fingers hooking into your panties, guiding them down until they fell off and you could step out of them.
Your fingers found the buttons of his shirt, blindly undoing them as he kissed you. You found yourself pausing, hands tracing over the new yet familiar skin that revealed itself with each one you managed to loosen until finally, finally it was open and you could push it off his shoulders.
His hand found the bow, roughly starting to tug until you reached back and caught him.
“Baby don’t pull. It’s sewed, it doesn’t come undone,” you cautioned, barely pulling back, unwilling to put any space between the two of you.
“Stupid,” he grumbled, pouting a bit until he realized that he could pull the fabric off your shoulders, freeing your chest. He hummed a bit in satisfaction, hands moving to squeeze your tits, and then he was kissing them, sinking lower, lower until his knees hit the floor.
“Oh fuck,” you squeaked, knowing exactly what was about to happen.
Ethan looked up at you from his knees with a teasing grin and a quirked eyebrow, waiting for your permission. You nodded, trying to breathe as his hands ghosted up your thighs, up to your hips.
And then he ducked his head so he could get under the fabric of your skirt, ready to get to work.
Your knees buckled as soon as you felt him, tongue warm and flat against you. One of his hands came down, tracing over your skin until he got to your calf, lifting it just barely and pushing it out to widen your stance.
You whimpered as he sped up, his satisfied hums adding to the sensation in a way that had your legs starting to shake already. Your hands dropped to his head, and you pushed the fabric off the top of it so you could get to his hair, tugging. It just made him go harder, burying himself deeper. You folded forward, bracing on his shoulders, overwhelmed as you alternated holding you breathe and gasping for air, squirming.
“E, Ethan stop, my legs are gonna give out, wait,” you gasped, pulling on his hair.
He paused, ducking out from under your dress and smiling up at you, lips swollen and pride booming.
“That’s the best compliment you’ve ever given me I think. But I’m not done yet, lay down.”
You did as he said, turning around and climbing onto the middle of the bed before collapsing onto your back, rolling over and looking for him. Ethan was one second behind you, crawling above you to hover over you then duck down to kiss you hard yet somehow sweet at the same time.
It was instinct to reach down to his waist, let your fingers ghost over his waistband, tuck underneath it in a blind search. He sucked in a breath through his teeth when you wrapped your fingers around the tip. He shook his head at you, making you pout.
“Tonights about you, not me.”
“But I want to.”
“Raincheck. Best fucking raincheck ever, but raincheck. Just lemme take care of you.”
He kisses you until you forget your argument - you’re putty in his hands as his lips trail back down. He pushes all the fabric of your dress together so it’s just a band around your tummy and then he picked up where he left off.
“Fuck E, just like that, oh god.” You were squirming again in a matter of moments, his stubble rough against your thighs as he worked you over. He felt your body tense up under his hold, smiling as he gave it all he had, giving that extra little push that sent you tumbling, clenching, writhing over the edge.
He peppered kisses to your thighs as you caught your breath, and then he reached up, fists closing around all the fabric of your dress.
“Lift your hips up,” he instructed, waiting for you to bridge up so he could wiggle the dress off over your hips. He tossed it towards the closet, moving back up towards your face, bed dipping down with his weight.
“No fair,” you pouted, reaching down to tug at his shorts and boxers.
“And I’m the impatient one.”
He stood back up off the bed, quickly shoving down the clothing he had left and stepping out of it.
“Much better.” You grinned wide when you saw he was blushing at your words. “C’mere.”
He happily listened, crawling back above you and dropping a bit of his weight down as he sunk to his forearms.
“So missionary is the way to your heart huh? So vanilla.” He bumped his nose against yours.
“You have a pretty face, sue me,” you laughed, bringing your hands up to his neck and pulling him down for a kiss as he dropped his hips, searching for just a moment before he pushed inside.
You’d lost count of how many times the two of you had been just like this, intertwined and enthralled with each other, but you knew you’d never get tired of it as long as you lived.
“I love you.” It came out as a breath when he bottomed out, his lips resting on your shoulder, back curled up at an angle that let you feel every muscle, every ridge of his body.
“I love you. You’re my dream, you know that?” He started to rock his hips, unwilling to go too far from you as you clung to his back, relishing in the feeling of him on you, in you, all around you.
This would always be your favorite way to be with him - sweet and soft, just your bodies together, nothing else. You couldn’t think of anything better.
He shifted just barely, thrusting in at a different angle. You knew he was searching, and you gasped when he brushed against your g spot, your whole body shuddering.
“There she is,” he whispered, a prideful grin on his face as he hit it over and over. Watching you come undone below him would always be one of his favorite views. “Look at me baby, I wanna see you.”
You did your best in your blissed out state to listen to him, turning your head from where it had fallen against the pillow to look at him while he picked up pace. Your legs curled around his back, holding him to you, urging him as deep as he could go as you chased the orgasm that was building in your gut.
He stared at you for a few moments, and then as if he couldn’t help it he ducked down to kiss you, open mouthed and rough as he pulled his hips back, thrusting forward with more force than he’d used yet.
“Oh fuck Ethan, fuck,” you moaned, holding onto him for dear life. When he snaked one hand between the two of you to find your clit, you were done for.
His breath caught in his throat as you clenched around him and you heard the whimpers through your cloudy haze, mixtures of pleasure and your name as he came undone, hip stuttering and then stopping when he finally hit his high.
Once he’s caught his breath he rolls the both of you over so you’re resting on his chest, listening to his heart rate settle back down under your ear.
“I’m so glad you came home early,” you sighed, hugging his bare torso as he chuckled.
“Me too baby. Me too.”

“I am telling you!  If you did not RSVP, you do not come in!  That is the rules!”  Philippe spread his arms wide, blocking the entrance to the rink.  Nino could barely see him through the crack in the double doors.  Philippe was a cool dude, but he wouldn’t last long against Nathalie, Adrien’s bodyguard, and tablet-Gabe himself.
Nino was tempted to go out there and turn the tablet’s power off, just to see what Nathalie would do.  But he didn’t want to get Adrien grounded for the next millennium.
Plus, he wasn’t supposed to be seen at all.  Kagami and Wayhem were on stalling duty with Philippe.  Nino just had to make sure that Nathalie wouldn’t find any trace of Adrien when she eventually forced her way in.
“They’re gone.  Finally.”  Chloé reported.
Nino nodded.  He’d seen a red blur leave through the window.
“Rose, Juleka, and I hid the presents behind the skate rental booth,” Alya said.  “Kim ate the rest of the cake, and Luka took XY to make out in the bathroom.  That should cover all the loose ends.”
“Why are you telling us that?”  Chloé gagged, and Alya rolled her eyes.
“Because XY’s obviously the weakest link here.  You said you caught him posting photos on Insta, right?”
“I did.  It’s a good thing you put me on the job.”  She flipped her hair.
Not that it mattered in the end, because Nathalie had found them anyway.  But the rink looked about as innocent as it could get.  With the presents hidden, the laser lights turned off, and generic pop music playing, they could’ve been a bunch of dudes on a regular Friday evening.
“Anyway, we’ll all be safer if XY isn’t here to spill our secrets for a little while.  You better go too, babe,” Alya said, squeezing Nino’s hand.
“Go where?  Apparently Luka and XY called dibs on the bathroom.”  Besides, he’d planned this party, and he was going to see it through.  It was time to break his three-year-long failure streak.
Alya sighed.  “I’ll be ready to pay your bail, then.”
He gave a weak grin.  Like Adrien, he was still seventeen.  They couldn’t actually arrest him, right?
Considering the Agrestes were loaded, he wouldn’t take his chances.
The doors opened.  Nino did his best not to scowl at Gabriel’s face on the tablet.
“What gives?”  He asked, pretending like he hadn’t put weeks of planning into this moment.  “Did you get mad we didn’t invite you to our sweet party?”
“So you admit it,” Gabe said coldly from the screen.  Nathalie remained as still as a statue, like she was only there to display her boss’ face.  It was pretty creepy, honestly.  Adrien’s bodyguard was normally silent anyway, so that wasn’t as unnerving.
“Admit what?  That we know how to have a rad time, and you don’t?”  Nino put his hands on his hips.  His tone might be pushing it, but if he acted too nice, Gabe would never buy it.
“That you threw a birthday party for dsfkslksdkfklfdfk when I have repeatedly sdlfdsfsllkdf express disapproval.”  Gabriel’s face glitched out a few times, his voice blurring to something like a keysmash.
Nino bit the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing.  Man, he owed Max big time for this.
“Birthday party?”  Wayhem frowned.  He was a better actor than most of them.  “I didn’t hear anything about a birthday.”
“Today is my son’s sdsaskdlfirthday.”
Wayhem’s head tilted.  “You have a son?”
Nino choked.  Okay, maybe Wayhem was trying too hard, but the look on tablet-Gabe’s face was priceless.  If only he could convince Nathalie to take a screenshot.
“It’s Adrien’s birthday, dude.”  Nino punched Wayhem’s arm.  “We just couldn’t invite him, remember?  ‘Cause his dad’s a buzzkill.”
“I took him out for birthday orange juice to cheer him up,” Kagami told Wayhem, but her words were really directed towards Gabriel.  “A poor substitute for a party, but it was the best I could do.”
Gabriel’s eyes flickered, as if scanning as much of the rink as his screen would allow.
“Search the area.”
Adrien’s bodyguard nodded once, not that Gabe could see him from his angle.  Then he went off to inspect the rows of chairs.  At least he wasn’t starting with the skate rental booth.
“Be careful with my rink!  Don’t step on the ice without proper skating equipment!”  Philippe shouted.
“Weren’t you listening?  He’s not here, dude—sir,” Nino corrected.  Not that it mattered much.  He’d already been as disrespectful as he dared.
Gabe’s face glitched again.  “Where is my son now, then?”
Alya shrugged.  “Probably on his way home, right?”
“Alone?”  He practically snarled.  The tablet froze for a moment, catching his mouth open in an unflattering frame.  Maybe Nino could sneak his phone out and take a picture if he couldn’t get a real screenshot.  “Why wouldn’t he call his bodyguard?  Have you all dslkfddfsjljfdls irresponsible—”
“He’s with Ladybug, dude,” Nino interrupted.  Adrien’s bodyguard was getting close to the skates; he couldn’t afford to stall too long.  “He can’t get safer than that.”
For some reason, that only seemed to make Gabe seethe more.  But a neutral expression quickly replaced it, so maybe Nino was just imagining things.
“If sdlfkdfs your idea of a trick, you’ll have to—”
Kagami’s phone dinged.  Silently, she held up her screen to the tablet.  Nino couldn’t see what it showed, but Gabe’s mouth finally shut.
“Nathalie.  Return home at once and sdlfjkdssdls Ladybug has delivered my son safely.”
Nathalie’s expression changed for the first time, her eyes widening.  “But, sir, aren’t you already at—”
“Kskdlfskfl at once.”  The screen went dark.
Nathalie sighed, like Gabriel had taken the last bit of her composure with him.
“Enjoy your not-birthday party,” she said in monotone before exiting the rink, her heels clicking against the concrete floor with each step.
Adrien’s bodyguard jogged after her.  His face was bright pink—he’d just come out from investigating the boy’s bathroom.  XY must have been useful after all.
Nino whistled once the adults were gone.  “What did you show her?”
Kagami held up her phone for him.  Adrien’s face was squished next to Ladybug’s in a selfie he’d posted to Instagram.  Her smile looked a little more hysteric than Alya’s Ladyblog photos could capture.  Actually, it looked kind of familiar.
But Nino didn’t think too hard about that, considering the caption Adrien had typed.
Escorted home by my favorite superhero!  I couldn’t ask for a more miraculous birthday present!! <3
If Ladybug looked awkward, it was probably just embarrassment at how cheesy he was.
“How did you get that so fast?”  Nino frowned.
“I messaged Adrien while you were stalling.  Unfortunately, he’ll have to return home to maintain the illusion.”  Her brows pulled into a scowl.  “I should have created a contingency plan for this.”
“What?”  Kim shouted.  “But I haven’t even won my bet!”
Alix cackled and stretched out her hand.  “Pay up, loser.”
Juleka ran her fingers comfortingly through Rose’s hair.  Max frowned down at his computer screen.  Others were murmuring to each other, looking downcast.  All of them knew how much work Nino and Kagami had put into this party.  All of them knew how much it meant to Adrien.
“Come on, we’re not giving up that easily!” Nino insisted.  “There’s gotta be some way to keep fooling Nathalie.  What if Max hacks the sound system again?  We can make it sound like he’s in bed snoring, or something.”
“Guys?”  Alya stepped up, waving her phone at the two of them.  “I have a better idea.”
XXX
Marinette.exe had stopped working.  Thankfully, Ladybug.exe could still run on backup power.  She tried to keep her cool as she swung them up onto the roof of the rink.
“Wait,” Adrien said before she could cast out her yo-yo again.  His breath was close to her neck, ruffling her pigtails. She did her best not to shiver.
“We need to get you away from here. Just in case,” Marinette said.  The silver limo was still parked below, but she had no idea how long it would take for Nathalie and Adrien’s bodyguard to leave the rink.
“They won't see us up here.  I can’t leave without making sure Nino is okay.  Last year, my father almost got him arrested.”
Marinette winced.  Of course, Adrien didn’t know that “Ladybug” was there for his previous almost-birthday-party, close enough to see the bruises on Nino’s arm.
“I hope he’s alright too,” she said quietly before gently setting him on his feet.  His arms were still secure around her neck, and his ring was a shock of cold where it brushed her skin.
His ring.  She’d never seen him without it.
“I—sorry!”  Adrien practically yelped when she did shiver.  His arms slapped back to his sides.
She couldn’t do anything but stare as red spilled across his cheeks.  It was him.  It had to be him.
Ladybug.exe was beginning to shut down too.  Maybe Max could reinstall her software.
“Ladybug?”  Adrien swallowed.  “We should probably hide a little bit better…”
“R-right!”
She let him pull her flat against the roof.  They laid there on their stomachs, her arm pressed to his, their fingers still twined together.  His silver ring gleamed against the red of her suit.
How was she supposed to breach the subject?  “Oh, by the way, I know you’re Chat Noir?”  It was his birthday.  He deserved a perfect identity reveal, not just her stupidly blurting whatever came into her head.
His phone beeped, startling her.
“Sorry.  Kagami said to keep my ringer on in case of an emergency.”  He fished the phone from his pocket and set it on the roof.  They were close enough for Marinette to see the message from Kagami on his screen.
“She needs us to take a selfie?”  Her brow furrowed.
Adrien shrugged.  “It must be important.”
They sat up, still holding hands.  Her blush probably matched his by now, but if he hadn’t let go, why should she?
She shuffled closer to him, until her chin was resting over his shoulder.  Just so they would both fit in the camera frame, of course.  Not because she wanted to press her cheek to his, feel his blush on her skin.
Yeah, she wasn’t kidding anyone.  Except maybe him.
“Smile!”  He said, holding up his phone.
As if she could not smile when breathing in his radiant, carefree, dreamy scent.  When she knew more than ever that they were made for each other.
Her grin still looked a bit too wide in the photo, not like his perfect, brilliant smile.
“You’re still that happy?”  She couldn’t help blurting.  She had his model smiles memorized.  This wasn’t one of them.  It was too genuine, much more so than her tense grin.
“Why wouldn’t I be?”  He looked up from where he was typing out a caption.  “I get to spend my birthday with my—with my favorite superhero.”  His smile twitched, almost becoming a familiar smirk.
She blushed, even though Chat Noir had said more flirtatious things to her than that.
“But your party might be over.  You didn’t even get to open presents.”  Which reminded her, she still had his present in her yo-yo.  Now didn’t feel like the right time to give it to him, though.
“The best present is how much my friends thought of me.”  He squeezed her hand.  “And I wouldn’t worry yet.  Nino and Kagami probably have a plan for this.”
His phone rang.  Nino or Kagami already?  Was the coast clear?
But the contact on the screen wasn’t either of them.
“Alya?”  Adrien asked after picking up.  “Is everything okay?  Nino didn’t do anything crazy, did he?”
Marinette strained to pick out what Alya was saying on the other end, but it was too muffled.  Adrien’s eyes widened.
“Uh…” To her surprise, he held out the phone to her.  “Alya wants to talk to you.”
Marinette blinked before holding the phone to her ear.  “Hello?”
Alya didn’t waste time with introductions.  “Sorry to interrupt your date, but I know a way we can save Adrien’s party.  Can I borrow the fox miraculous again?”
XXX
Alya played a few notes on her flute, and brilliant light streamed from the end.  It coalesced into Adrien’s sleeping form, nestled beneath the covers.  So realistic.  His back even rose and fell with the illusion of breath.
“Amazing,”  Marinette whispered as she crouched in Adrien’s windowsill.  She tried not to fidget as she kept lookout—not that Nathalie should show up anytime soon.  Even though Marinette had stopped to pick up Alya’s miraculous, they’d easily left the Agreste limo behind in the Friday evening traffic.
Alya strapped her flute to her back and nodded.  “Probably a waste of effort.  I doubt Nathalie will even pay attention.”
Marinette sighed.  She was probably right.  If only she could take Adrien away for longer than one evening, one birthday party…
Soon.  Even if Adrien had to spend his days here, she would make sure his nights were full of freedom and laughter.
Full of love.
Just as soon as she found out the best way to reveal her identity.  It was only fair, now that she’d figured out his.  And then everything would be perfect, and they’d go on dates in the park, and she’d sew him sweaters to wear over his suit, and he’d crack puns and she’d pun back, and—
“You alright there, Ladybug?”  The faux eyebrows on Alya’s mask drew together.
“Yep!  Doing great!”  She grinned, face heating.  She had to be careful.  If she daydreamed too much in front of Alya, her friend might puzzle out her identity, too.
“We better go then.  Don’t want to leave your boyfriend waiting.”  She winked.
Marinette gaped.  “What?  He’s not—I mean, I wouldn’t mind if he was, but—”
She couldn’t date Adrien as Ladybug.  She’d known that even before she agreed to come suited up to his party.  But she hadn’t realized just how much of a mess it would be if Alya thought Ladybug was dating Adrien, and then Marinette showed up with him at school.
“It’s okay.  Practically everyone’s had a crush on Adrien at some point.  But Ladybug?”  Alya stepped close, then swung her legs over the windowsill so they were sitting side by side. “If you really want to be with him, you’d better love him, okay?  At least as much as my best friend does.  And I’m not sure that’s possible.”
Her face heated, but from what?  Embarrassment?  Intimidation?  She was being ridiculous.  Alya was comparing her to herself!
“I—I promise I’ll take his feelings seriously,” she said quietly.
Alya nodded.  “Well then, let’s go.”
With that, she leapt off for the next rooftop.  Marinette lagged behind for just a moment, though, glancing back at the illusory Adrien.
“He means everything to me.”
XXX
Adrien paced on the roof after Ladybug left.  He wasn’t sure what she was doing with Alya, or how they were going to keep Nathalie from realizing he wasn’t in his room.  She was Ladybug.  She always had a plan.
He did kind of wish she’d remembered to take him back inside first, though.
“So you’re just gonna sit out here?  You’re missing your own party!”  Plagg said, flying out of his hoodie.
“It’s alright.”  He swung his legs over the edge of the roof, kicking slowly back and forth.  The party had been amazing, and while he did want to be back inside, this was nice too.  The evening air, the bright moon, the phantom memory of Ladybug’s hand in his.
Did she actually like him?  Him?  No way.  She’d said she didn’t want to kiss him, and she’d acted a little bit off all night.
Maybe that was why he waited up here, rather than transforming and climbing down.  Somehow, he felt that if he could see her just one more time, he’d be able to understand.
His phone beeped.  He checked it immediately, heart pounding.  Was Ladybug okay?  Had her and Alya’s mysterious plan failed?
No.  It was Kagami, just checking on him.  He breathed a sigh of relief and began typing a reply.
“Boring.”  Plagg sighed.  “Wake me up when we get back inside.  I didn’t even get the chance to check out the cheese table.”
Adrien smiled and patted him as he snuggled back in the hoodie pocket.
I’ll be back soon, he typed.  Just waiting on Ladybug.
She left you up there?  Kagami sent back.  I’ll come get you.  Philippe is showing me a way up.
His eyes widened.  That fast?  Well, Kagami was never one to hesitate.
He didn’t even have time to write a reply before Philippe’s head poked up through a hidden trap door.
“Ah, there you are!  The man of the hour!”  He smiled.  “Your friend is looking for you.  She’s waiting below.”
“Thanks.  I’ll be down in just a second.”  He waved back, then turned his gaze to the horizon.
“Don’t take too long.  She’s very concerned about you.”
Kagami was always looking out for him.  It warmed his heart, even as he felt guilty for missing the party she’d planned.
“I won’t; don’t worry.”
Philippe disappeared down the hatch, and sure enough, Ladybug didn’t keep him waiting much longer either.  She dropped Alya off at the front door before swinging up onto the roof.
“You should be safe now,” she said with a smile.  “Your father will never know you’re here.”
He smiled back, suddenly overwhelmed with just how much he loved this girl.  Not only had she come to his party, she’d gone out of her way to make sure he didn’t get in trouble.
Of course, Alya had helped with that too.  He’d have to thank her when he got back inside.
“Thank you, Ladybug.”  He fought back the urge to take her hand again.  He didn’t have an excuse this time.  Besides, he was around her all the time as Chat Noir; he should have enough practice keeping his hands to himself.
She just smiled back, looking as strained as before, like a balloon about to burst.
“Are you okay?”  He asked, reaching out vaguely before letting his arm fall back to his side.  Hands to himself.
Because she didn’t like him.  Probably.  Even if his love was like a drum beating its way out of his chest, so loud she’d have to be deaf to ignore it.
She laughed with her head in her hands.  “Why does everyone keep asking that?”
“Um… because you’ve been acting a little bit weird all night, and if I did anything to make you uncomfortable, I want to be able to fix it.”
“You?”  Her head popped back up, revealing wide eyes.  “Worried about making me uncomfortable?”
“Uh… yeah?”  He wasn’t suited up, and “Adrien” didn’t have years of familiarity to fall back on.  Each casual touch could be misconstrued.
This time, her laugh was real, echoing over the traffic below.
“You’re too nice, you know that?”  She finally said.
“Um… thanks?”
Real eloquent, Adrien.  He was pretty sure he’d started the last three sentences with some variation of uh.
“I mean it.  You’re always too nice, and you’re always here for me, and I—I can’t believe I didn’t see it sooner.” She hiccuped, and—and was she crying?
“My—” he cut off before he could say my lady.
But she just smiled, even as tears trickled down her mask.
“Your lady.  Yeah.”  She giggled, though a wet sniffle interrupted it.  “Sorry, I didn’t mean to get all emotional.  I planned out a whole speech on the way over, and then I saw you and it just—woosh!  Gone.”
Your lady.  His… but then she…?
“You’re so cute when you figure things out,” she said, reaching out to take his hand.  “I hope you’re not disappointed.  I wanted to give you a more dramatic reveal, but I—I just love you so much, aaaaaaand I wasn’t supposed to say that yet either.”
She smacked her forehead with her free hand.  He was still gaping, his soul practically leaving his body.
“How could I ever be disappointed with that?”  He breathed, looking between her eyes and their joined hands.  He gave hers an experimental squeeze, and found that she squeezed back.  Sparks went off from his fingers to his toes.  “My Lady, this is the best birthday present ever.”
That was a lie.  She threw her arms around him, and that was the best present ever.  Every heartbeat was better, and better, and soon he was laughing and breathing in the scent of her hair, and she was laughing back and squeezing him so tight he could burst.
“I love you too,” he said against her neck.  “Obviously.”
“Obviously,” she huffed.  “It wasn’t obvious to me.”
“Well, I’ll make sure it will be from now on.”  He pulled back just enough to rest his forehead against hers, to stare into her eyes.  A few freckles spilled out from under her mask.  He’d never been close enough to see those before.
“I’d appreciate that.”
He could’ve asked when, or how, or why she’d fallen for him.  What happened to the other boy she used to talk about?
But that all faded in the face of her lips brushing his.  Hesitant at first, then wanting, needing.  This was better than anything he could’ve asked for.  A giddy laugh burst from his lungs to hers, and she pulled back.
“Sorry,” he said sheepishly.  You probably weren’t supposed to laugh in someone’s mouth while you were kissing them.  “I got a little too excited.”
“Adrien.”  She cupped his cheek in her palm.  “Never feel sorry for being happy.  Or excited.  I’m so excited I could die right now.”
“Please don’t.”
She chuckled.  “Anyway, as much as I just want to keep kissing you, I should probably give you your real birthday present.”
He blinked.  If she had more in mind for him than that, he might actually die.
She flipped open her yo-yo and pulled something from inside.  A little vial?
“I remembered you saying that you hated Adrien: the Fragrance,” she started, rolling the glass between her fingers. A pinkish liquid sloshed inside.  “So I found out some scents that you like, and I put something together.  Making cologne is a lot like making the potions for our kwamis.”
“You… made this?”  He accepted the bottle, unscrewing the top to take a whiff.  It did smell wonderful.  Like roses and strawberries, with just a hint of rain.  Was it magical, like the potions she could create?  “This is amazing, my Lady.  But… when did I tell you I hated the fragrance they made me advertise?”
She smiled.  “That’s the other part of your present.”
His eyebrows creased, but before he could ask for clarification, she whispered, “Tikki, spots off.”
He stared wide-eyed as pink light washed over her.  When the sparkles faded, he gasped.
“Marinette.”  Her name tasted sweeter than the smells she’d mixed just for him.  “Marinette.”
He couldn’t say anything else.  His face was sore from smiling so much, but he couldn’t stop.  Ladybug was Marinette, and she loved him!
“That makes sense,” a voice said from behind him.  He almost screamed, but Ladybug—Marinette—slapped a hand over his mouth first.
“Kagami?”  She gaped.  Her hand fell from Adrien’s face, giving him room to turn around.  “What—what are you doing up here?”
Kagami crossed her arms over the lip of the trap door.  “Adrien didn’t come down.  Philippe told you not to take too long.  But I understand why you did.”  She nodded, as if thinking to herself.
Adrien locked frantic eyes with Marinette.  Just because she was okay with revealing her identity to Chat Noir didn’t mean she’d be okay with Kagami knowing too.
“You… um… so how much did you…?”  He trailed off.
“I was waiting for you to finish kissing.  I’m told it’s impolite to interrupt.”
His eyes widened.  She’d been watching for that long?  He hoped she wasn’t upset.  Even if she didn’t like him romantically, it might still be awkward to watch him kiss someone else.
Marinette was bright red, but she cleared her throat.  “You won’t tell anyone, will you?”
“About your secret identity, or about kissing Adrien?”
“My identity,” she said quickly, looking more and more mortified by the second.
Kagami grinned.  It was a rare expression on her, but all the more special for it.  “I was only teasing.  Of course I will guard your identity with my life.”
Marinette smiled gratefully.  “Thank you, Kagami.”
“You’re welcome.  I’ll tell the others Ladybug dropped you off, so you were able to make it after all.”  She took a step down the ladder, before pausing and poking her head back up.  “And Marinette?  Thank you for taking care of him.”
“Of course.  He means everything to me.”
His heart warmed at the praise, at the way she said it so matter-of-factly.
Kagami disappeared back down the ladder, leaving him and Marinette in silence that somehow felt both comfortable and vaguely awkward.
“So, uh… you don’t mind if people know that we kissed?”  He asked cautiously.
That finally made her laugh again.  “Of course not.  I was… well, I was hoping you were going to be my boyfriend.”
“Yes,” he said quickly, as if she’d change her mind.  “I mean—please let me be your boyfriend.  That would be the best birthday present ever.”
She took his hand again and squeezed it tenderly before slipping his cologne vial into his hoodie pocket.  He’d dropped it at some point while they were kissing.  Plagg, blessedly, did not complain, even though the little bottle probably bonked him on the head.
“Then happy birthday, boyfriend.”

{ A collection of things that were talked about in the stream that I feel like are important to post here- most of which are about the playlist bc I can’t help myself when it comes to rambling about that thing HKJDFHKJSHF
Coomer and Bubby own three pet rats named “Rat” “Tat” and “Touie”
Tommy has in fact pet many cats before and “has probably made one before”
If Benrey ever shows up on the blog and if he ever takes his helmet off every single time he does so his hairstyle will change
Each character has a specific typing style! Gordon - Types with proper grammar but rarely uses end punctuation Tommy - Types in all lowercases with lots of exclamation points and emoticons Bubby- Never capitalizes the pronoun “I” but uses proper grammar everywhere else Coomer - All caps all the time Benrey - all lowercase with occasional proper punctuation
That said, the caption in the nightmare comic- (” you dont have to g̸o̷  ̸ h̴o̶ m̴ e̷ but y̸o̶u̵ ̸c̴a̵ n̷t̴ ̶s̷ t̷ a̵y̴ ̸h̷e̴r̷e̵ “) was put there by Benrey, which is why his character tag is on the comic. His typing style doesn’t have glitches, so somethings wrong with Benrey (This received a “SOMETHINGS WRONG WITH BENREY? NO SHIT-” from the chat which was REALLY FUCKING FUNNY FDSJHFDSKJF)
I could NOT elaborate on why Catabolic Seed fits Tommy so well, but the lyric “And I will protect you even if you won’t protect me too” is Tommy talking about Benrey, as things got just a Little rocky between them after the Resonance Cascade
“Want You Gone” for the most part is Gordon talking about Benrey, but there’s a specific verse wherein I like to think the roles are reversed and it’s Benrey talking about Gordon- I just can’t say which one it is because it might give something away
“Matches” and “Twin Sized Mattress” are on there for Benrey and Gordon and I refused to elaborate further HHDFKSHFK
“Daisy Bell” is on there for Coomer! But the way I see it it’s “Coomer singing the song while Bubby is witnessing what’s happening.” This was also not elaborated on DFHKJFSHK
The “most to least” stressed characters are Gordon, Benrey, Bubby, Coomer, and then Tommy, but this is subject to change LMFAO
I talked about the “Coomer’s AI is a bit busted and thus makes it more difficult for him to ignore this programming” thing a bit more! Coomer’s “probably the only one who isn’t absolutely livid with Benrey- other than Tommy, of course” because of this and his “suspicions” about Benrey that he talked about in chapter one
Exile Vilify was added to the playlist during the stream because it not only fits Gordon but it “Fits the thing that’s gonna happen to Bubby” (Thank you to my buddy Croix for suggesting the song!)
G-Man was reading Wikipedia articles about marriage for his officiator speech during the Coomer and Bubby wedding. He also didn’t react to the fire at all because he knows nothing about human culture and thought this was 100% normal }

may I request for a mark beaks x reader in a relationship imagine?
Request: Mark Beaks in a relationship X reader
Tumblr media
Relationship Headcanon
Rateing SFW
A/n- Mark is definitely a character I enjoy so I had fun with this idea!
* It starts off with Mark taking notice of how popular social media celebrity couples are
* His whole family idea didn't work out so he needs a real person
* Happens to find you through some of your tech videos
* You are a small presence online but you talk about the type of technology Marks company would be interested in and being an average anybody creates a fairy tale relationship
* And you happen to be following Mark
*It’s just cheesy enough to be perfect so he has a meeting set up with you, of course, you didn’t expect it to be for some faked relationship
* When you go into his office to talk you get dragged around his company before actually getting to find out what it’s all for, as Mark twiddles away at his phone snapping pictures here and there
* When finally getting the point of why you are there he doesn't really ask but tells you that he's picked you to be his fake SO for internet hits.
* Painting the image of his obviously great idea, a small-time inventor and the genius CEO being star crossed lovers who starting partnering till they just couldn’t deny their feelings anymore.
* It’s almost comical to you at first and part of you is ready to walk out. this was Mark Beaks he may be a genius but he was a scheming one who went for the easy lazy path of getting things done.
* Then again this was Mark Beaks, he was a tech industry billionaire, he had a quite impressive following on social media. didn’t matter if people liked him or not he knew how to draw in hits
* You weren't some pure innocent regular person, morals were fine but you had a passion project that needing funding (what you were hoping the meeting was for) Mark’s company was always flooding with investors and it wasn’t lost on you that couples like this help boost both parties social media accounts
* Mark’s SO who also is a tech wiz that would draw attention to you but you had to make sure this would benefit you
* “Fine but you have to mention my work at least and say you're excited about it.” that was your only condition
* Mark just shrugs like he wasn’t surprised and suddenly your pulled in close to him as he snapped another photo he posts right away to show off his SO making up some story that you were dating in secret but ready to be public now. ”ha Y/N look at that already treading oh and soo many dislikes, my admires hate you.” He cooed enjoying the success
* As he chats away he tells you the contract details you have to hang around his job at least three times a week so it seems you two are always together and says that you’ll date for five months in which things will end from your side of course
* He had to get the sympathy from the followers on how he got his heart broken
* Your visits consist of sitting around his building having the spate time you bring work along with you, thinking you'll get a lot done because of course Mark doesn't really want to spend time with you.
* Expect you're constantly getting interrupted by the parrot. Either he's grabbing you for good photo ops, or making you create your own sappy couple posts. Stating your captions are kind of bland and need more spice
* But takes it back when seeing the reactions in the comments, after all, you know romance is the best selling genre so it’s easy to get people's interest peaked
* Mark one day makes a post saying he loves watching you work on your passion project then smugly laughs as he sits by you. well your working curiously finally asking about what exactly it is you always got your head buried into
* You out of excitement perk up and start to go into great detail about the software you have been codding away at.
* Mark is taken aback by the passion flowing out of you almost jealous being reminded of a past self before getting swept up with frame and likes as he listens to you go on. He actually lowers his phone focused on the glow of your smile.
* Suddenly just meeting at his office isn’t enough and now your being taken out to places free meals are okay by you though so it’s not so bad and it’s nice to get breaks.
* Mark will randomly text you on days your not set to meet asking where you are, only for you to say it's not one of the prearranged days.
* “Well it’ll get suspicious if we only hang out on certain days so come over now actually wait I got a helicopter waiting at your door”
* And of course it’s him in said helicopter
* You find it easier to go along with his changing whims than to argue anyway. You were having issues with your work anyway and the distraction wasn’t too bad.
* Mark ends up getting a work station set up for you in his office which of course has waddle’s latest computer set up on it and he had found a way to transfer your code to it and well he was at it he made some tweaks to it.
* At first you panic and quickly look it over only to see he fixed some bugs that were causing glitch outs and crashes.
* “God mark your amazing!” you yell out looking over the tweaks he had made
* Normally Mark would point out that was obvious but he feels a sudden skip in his chest when you say that giving that same smile you had when talking about your work. But it was aimed at him
* Mark is lately motivated to do work, actual work at that. He almost sounds like a little kid who did their homework when he tells you about finishing paperwork, closing business deals, overseeing current projects and even getting his meetings done.
* At first your praise is a simple joke but as he gets more involved you are actually impressed and your compliments get more genuine and personal unaware of the flirtatious tone in your voice after a while.
* Mark loves it, usually followed up with him agreeing with your praise boosting it more
* Mark slowly starts asking your thoughts one some of his business ongoings but more surprisingly had even let you touch some of his tech software because he trusts you
* Mark’s post start to become more real. sometimes he’s not even in photos as he posts a picture of you with your coffee teasing how focus you get leading to rewarming the same cup twelve times that day alone
* He takes a bit of pleasure at how embarrassed you become over that as he can’t help but tease you more from now one because your squeaks are perfect
* Being around Mark leads to longer hours beyond “dates” or you having to be at his office for the day, now he’s asking if you could stay late with him well he finishes something.
* You fall asleep on the couch in his office only to wake up with his coat over you, and never did you see him post a photo of that.
* Small gestures like that start to become normal, his assistants start bring you coffee, or rewarming in for you and having it ready exactly when you remember it.
* Making sure you have meals getting sent to you when your working at home because he knows you’ll skip when too focused
* At first being around each other was spent with him looking at his phone or you glued to a computer but now he's putting his phone down to talk to you
*And mark talks about everything if you weren’t there for something he tells you every detail about his story
* Marks true self starts to crack through sometimes, he can’t help if you get him to where he doesn't feel the need to be on guard always. He isn’t this always confident lazy genius man you originally thought him to be.
* Oddly enough he's okay with you seeing those hidden sides of him your private moments with him occurring more, he finds comfort in your company
* You get some investor calling to talk about your software project and after setting up meetings with them your first thought it to call mark
* Then you come across the contract you agreed to and realize your time is getting close to ending. You see that after some time you had started to really feel something for Mark and kind of wished you had more time
* Mark seems to already know about the meeting he seems different today that usual flare nowhere in his voice he seemed elsewhere looking at his phone like always but you couldn’t hear the usual sound of him scrolling through his feeds. Unable to look at you
* “So five months in about three days uh?” he states to you making it clear he wouldn’t be looking at you as he spoke tone a bit icy “your got someone wanting to buy your work too seems you got a sweet end out of this.”
* Part of you felt the sting from his words, but part of you was also aggravated he came up with the dumb idea so why does he get to be mad.
*“If we do five months to the day may be suspicious we can call it quits keeping it going is a waste of my time.” he seemed to be fishing for his usual businessmen flare when he spoke but failed to find it
* You were ready to just leave but you felt even worse than before nothing was real after all and he gets to throw a fit, no way you decide as you approach his desk he pays you no mind so you take his phone out from his grip, sure hell just grab one of his spares but at least it’ll make him look at you
* Till you see his screen, he was staring at photos of you two and most was ones he never once posted, pictures he kept for just himself. Pictures of you typing away at the desk. You sleeping with his coat as a blanket, some sneaked photos of you out and about smiling from the “dates” you went on
* Mark just stares at you and you get it finally Mark was upset he thought it wasn’t real to you.
* “I love you idiot”
* Marks flustered face is enough for payback from all the time he had teased you, quickly he scrambles up onto his desk his desperation obvious “Y/N? Really?” you nod and decide to help him
* “Who could resist falling for Mark Beaks?”
* He smiles genuinely and reaches for his phone you think but are proved wrong as he grabs on to your shoulders and suddenly pulls you into a kiss
* because the fact the amazing y/n loved him was too hard to process he had to react and show he felt the same
 * Waddle ends up getting some new software that improves a lot of their tech it just made sense since Mark did help with it, it does bring rumors up that you getting hired on is just because of your dating Mark.
* Which yeah it partly true he isn’t ashamed to admit, blunt like always but he seems to be taking more out of that statement of you dating him
*Leading to many jokes at you expense that you obviously want him as he lowers his phone resting his head on your lap and smiles brightly at your annoying gaze you fix him with
* “Aw come on Y/N you know you love me” he pleads as he reaches up and cups your cheek getting you to smile despite yourself “world knows I love you” he says simply holdinghis phone up as he dose

Another round of Multiplayer I did, complete with another Celeste Wand Recipe, and, well, Del’s Crafting Glitch finally got fixed in the latest update! (Previously he would craft two tiles behind the DIY bench and the tile inbetween him and the bench would have the “crafting dust cloud”.  I could walk into said cloud, since it didn’t have it’s own hitbox, and is just supposed to appear over things that already have hitboxes...)

I don’t have any of these, so I winded up buying the first thing he offered, heh!
Tumblr media
I’d say he should buy things more permanent, but my stance on figures is that they’d just clog up my room more.  That’s why I subscribed to a food loot box for a time, heh.

So, on a more serious topic, I noticed that the two sites I use to keep track of when critters appear in ACNH can’t decide on the months when the Chambered Natilus appears for Southern Henisphere...
gamewith.net (the white image) seems to say that the Chambered Natilus never appears in July for either Hemisphere, but nookisland.com says it appears from May to November in the Southern Hemisphere... However, when I swapped Nooksisland to Northern Hemisphere, it did agree that Chambered Nautilus doesn’t spawn there this month.
I’m inclined to believe gamewith.net, given how many slow-type deep sea critters I caught.  The result has only been Sea Slugs or Sea Cucumbers so far, and unless Chambered Nautilus is Hyper-Rare like the Walking Stick, I doubt that it’s taken me this long to find it!
...Oh wait, I have a third source for checking Critter-Appearing times, the ACNH Life App!
...Yeah, it agrees that nooksisland.com is giving the wrong months.  Chambered Natilus just doesn’t like Winter, I guess. Whelp, that’s a load off my mind!

Frustrated - Noah Centineo Imagine
Tumblr media
anonymous said:
Okay so it’s no secret that Noah is like the softest human alive. And because of that I feel like he would sometimes get insecure especially if his gf and him hadn’t spent much time together lately. Could you please write a fic about that? Like y/n is hanging out with a male co-worker alot a Noah feels neglected/quiet when y/n figures out what’s up she comforts/reassures him? With a cute cuddly ending obvs!!
You got it!!
I’m gonna have this build off my STEM Reader x Noah Imagine, so be sure to read that beforehand! Additionally, check out my masterlist!
Word Count: 1,328
“Babe. Bab-Babe! I gotta go.” You say, attempting to break from Noah’s grasp. “I was almost late yesterday.”
“But I’m gonna miss youuuuuuuuu.” He says, pouting. He throws himself back on his couch like a toddler, frustrated.
“But don’t you want a smart, independent, financially secure girlfriend?” You says, straightening out your blouse and putting on your blazer.
“You know I don’t care about the last category.” He says, voice muffled through a pillow.
“Fine, we can split the bills 80/20 because of the gender wage gap.” You say, kissing the top of his head. “See you later!!”
You grab your keys and take the elevator down to the garage. Your phone buzzes almost instantly, and it’s a snapchat from Noah. You open it and it’s a photo of him pouting with the caption,
miss u already :(
Dork.
Living with Noah has been amazing. After your apartment was cleaned you moved back in to finish out the rest of the Spring Session, but Noah insisted you moved in with him for the summer. At first you were hesitant, but once you finally got your dream internship at Google--which just so happened to be 10 minutes away from Noah’s apartment--you decided to take him up on his offer.
As you pull up to the parking lot and into your space, you let out a deep sigh. You loved interning here and you were learning fast, but the other interns were so... rigid. The only friend you’ve made here is a guy named Max, who’s a year above you at his school.
Tumblr media
“Hey!” Max says, as you get out your car.
“Oh. Hey Max!” You say, locking it.
“This is like... the second time we’ve gotten here at the same time.” He says, laughing.
“Well, great minds think alike.” You say, “And you sure do bring a new meaning to business causal.”
“My Henley shirt is casual,” He says, “but the checkered blazer is business.” He says, putting it on.
You shrug.
“You’re lucky Google is chill.” You say, laughing.
Shoot, I forgot to snap Noah back.
You whip out your phone, close your eyes, and make a kissy face. You type out,
Maybe I’ll come home for lunch ;)
Before you hit send, you notice Max in the background of the photo sticking his tongue out. You shrug and sent it anyways.
“Thanks for photobombing, my guy.” You say with a chuckle as you approach the door.
He jumps in front of you to open the door.
“No problem.” He says, crossing his legs and bowing.
You roll your eyes and walk through.
By the time lunch rolled around, you were knee deep in coding a new menu-toggle for a new function in Google Docs. However, your stomach didn’t care.
Can’t. Stop. Coding.
You check your phone.
12:30pm.
At this rate, I’ll be done in 30 minutes. That’ll leave me another 30 minutes to eat-
*thump*
Your thoughts are interrupted by the sound of a savory-smelling Spaghetti Bolognese being placed on your desk. Your mouth starts watering.
“I saw you over here with your head in the screen.” He says, smiling. “God bless, Postmates! And the company card.” He holds up an American Express Gold Card.
“Oh my god, thank you.” You say, taking the lid off.
“No worries.” He says, “I’ll let you get back to that.”
As soon as you fork a hefty amount into your mouth, your phone starts buzzing in your pocket. You take it out and it reads,
Incoming FaceTime Video
Noah Fifty-Cent 🤪
Fuck, I forgot I had said I might come back.
You answer it.
“Hey, babe!” You say, trying not to have your smile riddled with guilt.
“Hey... I’m guessing you can’t come back.” He says, sighing.
“Yeah, I’m sorry baby. I’m coding a new function for Google Docs and it’s taking forever.” You say.
“It’s okay, I get it.” He says, smiling a bit, “I mean I don’t because I’m not wicked smart and can’t code-”
“Shut up.” You say, laughing.
“I’ll see you tonight.” He says, blowing a kiss to the camera.
“I’ll see y-” You say.
“Hey, y/n. One last thing-” Max says, walking into the frame. You turn to face him.
“Yeah?” You say.
“Could you-” He says, before seeing Noah’s face through the call. “Oh. Hey, man!”
“Hey Max...” Noah says. You turn back to face your phone.
“I’ll see you tonight, okay?” You say.
“Yeah, see you.” He says before hanging up. You turn back to face Max.
“Ah... sorry about that. I just left my phone on your desk.” He says, picking it up. “Later.”
“Bye!” You say, turning back around.
Well, this spaghetti isn’t gonna eat itself.
By the end of the day, you’ve finished the menu along with half of tomorrow tasks. Feeling accomplished, you shut your computer down and head to your car. You flip out your phone and record a Snapchat for Noah.
“Since you’ve been waiting so patiently, fire up your favorite movie and have it ready. I’ve placed an order at our favorite place with the outrageously gooey brownies and the lasagna that tastes like your dad’s-” You say, until you’re interrupted.
“Hey, y/n!” Max says.
“Oop. Ah, okay.” You turn around, and then back to the camera, “I’ll be home soon! Mwah!” You say, blowing a kiss to the camera. You type in his username and send the video.
“Hey...” Max says.
“Yeah?” You say turning to Max.
“A few of the people in the offices are going to this dope lil’ bar a couple blocks down. Did you wanna come with us?” He says, smiling.
“Ah, thanks! But I’m having a night in with my boyfriend.” You say.
“Oh, dope.” He says, “Next time, then?”
“Yeah! Have a goodnight!” You say, hopping in your car.
“You too!” He says before walking to his own.
~
“Babyyyyyyyyyyyyy..” You say, walking through the door. “I got the comfort food!”
You place the food on the counter and see Noah on the couch. If he hadn’t showered, you wouldn’t been able to tell if he moved from that spot all day.
“Yay...” He says, queueing up ‘Love’ by Gaspar Noé.
“Babeeeeee.” You say, going to comfort your obviously grumpy bf. You still on the couch and swing your legs across him, then nibble on his ear.
He laughs a little and the sighs again. You kiss his cheek and ask him,
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. It’s stupid.” He says, giving you an eskimo kiss.
“It’s not stupid.” You, running a hand through his curls. “Tell me.”
He sits there quietly as you pepper his face in kisses.
“It’s just... I don’t know.” He says, squinting, “I think I’m kinda jealous of Max.”
Your eyes widen.
“What, why?” You say.
“It’s like... Whenever I call you at work, he’s there.” He says, “The little sticker on the lid of the spaghetti said ‘Maxwell Anderson’, and it doesn’t help that he’s gorgeous.”
You chuckle a little.
“Like, is he a real person? I think the simulation glitched.” Noah says.
“Babe...” You say, hugging him.
“I know I get to sleep next to you and wake up with you but... the fact that he can connect with you on a level I can’t... makes me a little sad.” He says.
“But baby, I taught you how to make an input-output program...” You say, leaning on him.
“That’s not the same, and you know it.” He says, pouting.
“Hey.” You say, turning his face to meet yours. “Coding isn’t everyone’s thing. But you wanna know what my thing is?”
“What?” He says.
“You.” You say, before drawing him in for a deep kiss. It starts soft, but slowly grows in passion.
He pulls away.
“I love you.” He says.
Your heart skips a beat.
That’s the first time he’s said that. Oh my God.
“I love you, too!” You say, peppering his face with kisses. “Okay, now let’s eat before I eat you.”

[old] guidelines
// these are my original rules. though they are still generally relevant, my newer, shorter, more concise rules post is here
A love letter from me to you! Please take it to heart.
The Lowdown: mod is an artist & supportive af|selective|primarily plot-motivated|operates on mutual respect|your friendly rpc fairy godbitch; gimme your wishlists|zero tolerance for OC negativity & bigotry|triggers present|18+ content present|consistent but occasionally capricious activity|OOC communication appreciated|lots of love abound ♡
Mod Sal (they/them/theirs; 24; PST)
I study medicine and social justice with emphasis on emergency medicine and sex work, respectively. In addition to being a writer I’m also an activist, artist, and scholar. I’ve been writing Bel since 2015. She’s a very intricate and highly dynamic character who has gone through many changes over the years via her interactions. I look forward to developing her even more with your muse(s)!
Before I talk about the kind of conduct I’d like on my blog, this is the type of roleplayer and friend I aspire to be. I’ll strive to be as attentive and supportive as I can about your muse, ideas, as well as ooc presence. If we’re mutuals, you can expect plenty of inboxes, tag games, headcanons, relationship tags, to be tagged in & sent posts relating to our muses, general interaction, and emotional support proportional to the depth of our interactions when I’m online. I’m an unapologetic 1-person hype squad at heart and will do my best to spread the love and return the love I get.
If I’m not around here, you can find me on my snk blog and/or discord by request. I muse Eren and Levi as secondary muses, but they won’t be nearly as active as Bel and are only available to established mutuals. I also have untagged resource & nsfw musing side blogs.
Interactions
When it comes to interactions, nothing motivates me more than an eagerness to develop our muses’ relationship. Depending on what works best for you, we can work on this via inbox submissions, plotting, or simply interacting. I have a tendency to write para/novella-length replies, but will strive to match you in length and style. Please include something I can actively respond to in your reply, because neutral replies can be very difficult to build upon, and please do not godmod her based on assumptions and/or stereotypes about her character/profession.
With regards to ask responses, please feel free to turn them into threads by tagging me in a new post and cutting your replies. I’ll turn asks into threads if they inspire me, but you’re under no obligation to continue them if you’re not as motivated. When cutting, please don’t cut me out. Also, please don’t reblog asks with your reply or reblog replies with my tag if I don’t reply quickly enough. I track of all my threads to the best of my ability, so please check there first if you want to know the status of our thread. If I’ve missed a thread of ours, please help me out by sending it to me in a message so I can add it to the tracker. If you lose muse for a thread, please don’t feel pressured to continue it. We can always take a break or start something new. I don’t cap my threads and am always open to new interactions.
Selectivity
Though I run a selective blog, I am not very selective in nature. I do have a preference for original and SnK/AoT characters, especially those that inspire me and challenge me. I’ll primarily look for interactions by checking blog rules for oc-friendliness, reblogging promos, asking to be mutuals in the tags, then follow back after that initial follow is granted. If you don’t want me to follow you, please block me completely because otherwise I’ll think it’s a mistake/glitch and follow you again. On the topic of glitches, they do happen so I apologize ahead of time if that happens above or below my radar.
I don’t tolerate oc-negativity or ooc bigotry and will handle my blog accordingly. If you align yourself in any way with TERF, SWERF, homophobic, ace-exclusionary, racist, and/or xenophobic rhetoric, please do not interact. It’s important for me to surround myself with enriching content and community. I have boundaries and will be setting them for my own comfort as well as respect yours because mutual respect between muns is key to a healthy rpc.
Sourcing
Please don’t do it. This goes for starters, ask memes, wishlist posts, and wanted connections. I understand we might not be the muse/mod duo you have in mind and that we don’t fit every situation, but please don’t fill my notifications with this sentiment, especially if we don’t have any established interactions yet. If our blogs have that much in common, there’s so much we could be musing about. If this happens excessively without us having any interactions, I’ll unfollow and/or block because I am a roleplay blog, not a resource hub. If you’re interested in my musing/resource posts, please show interest in muse interactions as well. The latter is why I’m here and there’s nothing more disheartening and discouraging to my creativity than being used and/or ignored when I present things.
Original Character Disclaimer
It pains me that something like this needs to be said, but Bel wasn’t created to force ship with your muse and/or overpower our threads. I will absolutely under no circumstances tolerate any form of OC negativity. I don’t care if you think they’re “cringey”, “underdeveloped”, “overpowered”, or any other iteration of not meeting your personal criteria of a good character. Opinions are valid but unsolicited bullying is not. It is important to realize that canon characters are still original characters bar their capitalistic franchise. The mods of original characters are a goldmine of free and original content and deserve to be judged by conduct, not content.
If you’d like to support OCs, I invite you to scroll through and reblog a thing or two from my OC positivity tag, as well as follow and engage in meaningful interactions with the OCs in your orbit. Your encouragement could be what makes a content creator’s breakthrough, so please be kind and supportive. Saying you’re OC-friendly while providing an extensive grocery list of double standards OCs must abide by to be considered acceptable isn’t OC-friendliness. Likewise, musing an OC doesn’t automatically make you incapable of being exclusive (unintentional or not) so please be cognizant as well  and lets support each other.
Shipping
That being said, I’m just like every other mun. I enjoy shipping and the occasional smut scene given the chemistry is right and both muns are equally invested in the relationship as well as comfortable with it. The more we develop our muses, the more complicated their relationship will be and the more likely I’ll personally gift you with fanart. Above all, your comfort is paramount to our interactions so please communicate with me. Likewise, please respect my comforts when I speak of them. I am much more likely to be enthusiastic about shipping than Bel is, however, so please be patient with us and respect her boundaries as well.
# FREE THE FPN . SFW // ONLY IT’S NOT
This is the tag I will use to mark sexually explicit content. Bel is somewhere on the ace spectrum, but is nonetheless a sensual character and has a couple verses that engage in sex work. Bel’s struggles with her identities are a very big part of her personal characterization, so please be patient with her. [Marilyn Monroe’s hinted asexuality] Likewise, if she’s not into your muse, please don’t push such interactions unless we discuss them as a plot element.
Trigger Warnings
The SnK universe is rampant with violence, gore, psychological trauma, profanity, and grey morality. Furthermore, I enjoy writing dark themes and will provide the disclaimer now that this may be a rather trigger-heavy blog. However, that doesn’t mean you have to be subject to all these themes. If you’d like me to tag things in a certain way, please don’t hesitate to let me know because your comfort is important to me. I’ll gladly create a new tag for you to blacklist/filter and add it to my tag list. Furthermore, this blog will have the occasional explicit content so please don’t interact if you’re under 21.
Activity
I’m finishing up my bachelor’s so classes and coursework will keep me from here sometimes. Furthermore, I struggle with mental illness and domestic abuse in my home environment, so bouts of these may also pull me from activity. I’ll be doing my damndest to keep my issues off the dash but if things are especially severe and I feel the need to post about it and/or reach out, I’ll use a semicolon tag (#;).  Nonetheless, musing, roleplaying, and plotting helps keep my spirits up so please keep me updated with your muse and share your discord with me, if you’d like. I’d love it so much if we could continue developing our muses as I slip off of and find my way back to tumblr, and I’d appreciate you very much as a writing partner and friend. ♡
Accessibility
I’m not very savvy with code, but I do try my best to keep my blogging accessible as I tinker and learn. If you struggle with accessing any part of my blog, let it be font size, style, or anything else, please let me know and I’ll do my best to accommodate because I don’t want to perpetuate elitism or ableism in the rpc. As far as reply formatting goes, I’ll usually stick to once small text (particularly in novella length replies via ctrl shift -) and spare use of italics, bolding, and strikethrough text. I may use unicode and/or zalgo for art captions, personal musing posts, crack threads, and other posts that call for it. Every once in awhile, I will blog from mobile and as a result post text in default size, but I’ll still cut my posts and at worst, separate our replies with a symbol or icon if I can’t blockquote text through html.
Permissions
One of my favorite things about roleplaying is sharing content and playing tag games. If you come across anything that reminds you of Bel and/or our interactions/plotting, please show me! Even more so, if you’re a content creator, you have complete and total freedom to use her and her inspirations in your work. I only ask to see it! Likewise, if I ever create any art for you, please acknowledge it at the very least. If you send in an art request and I deliver, please reblog it. Failure to do this kills my creativity as well as generosity so... please.
Exclusive to this blog are my own art and edits as well as those gifted by friends. Please don’t ransack our labors of love and re-purpose them as your own. Bel’s Iva & Marie icons were collected by yours truly with a beautiful frame made by Shane. Other people who have contributed their talents throughout the years include madcapraccoon, L, desertbl00m, Eris, Justice, sangre-rebelde, emptyolivejar, desimouse, and the many rp blogs that have interacted with her. I’d also like to give a special shout-out to sjokohama for the boundless enthusiasm given to her development as well as the readers who have enjoyed and left amazing comments on her original fanfiction. She wouldn’t be out here if it weren’t for Y’all ~ ♡
If you feel like something should be added to or clarified in these guidelines, please let me know. I realize I have a lot to say as a consequence of being here for so long, but I still want to keep my conduct as transparent and accessible as possible.
Thank you for reading! Please feel free to like this post and interact ~ ♡

shit staff needs to fix on mobile already
•@ mentions in my activity page always bring me to a "no posts found" page. Therefore, I have to go digging through the other person's blog to find the post they @ 'd me in instead of just clicking the notif and being brought right to it like I'm SUPPOSED to be able to do. •Trying to PM someone from the "send a message" link on their blog either brings me to an error page or causes a glitch where it looks like I'm controlling the message thread from their blog, sending MY blog a message instead. It only does it when I access the message page from their blog, not the activity/messages page icon, but considering I almost always do use the on-blog option, it's really annoying. •We still can't add photos to text posts on mobile. I mean, it's 2017. It's time. •We can't see blog pages on mobile unless we go over to a browser app or they happen to have links in their blog description. It'd be pretty simple to add an icon like the ask and follow buttons in the corner that has those pages listed in it. •Sometimes when you look at a blog, it'll only show the send ask/message icon OR the share blog/block icon, but not both. You have to leave the blog and re-enter to get the other one to show up. •We still can't bold/italicize/strikethrough/etc. text on mobile without fucking with the HTML, which can break the whole post if you don't know what you're doing. Seriously. The notes app that comes with all iphones has these options that show up when you tap and hold on text. Why can't tumblr mobile? •Sometimes if you reblog a post and then go back later to add tags, it deletes the entire caption for no reason. •You can't use the "block" option on asks on mobile anymore, yet the option is still accessible on desktop. Why remove it from mobile? It's an important feature. •Mobile thinks it's okay to post/reblog the exact same fucking thing 50 times in a row for some reason. •Asks on desktop remain onscreen while you can type an answer underneath so you can see the ask while you answer it, but on mobile it takes you to a completely separate page. This isn't THAT big of a problem, but it'd be nice to keep asks onscreen on mobile too. •There's no inbox notification if you get an ask while on mobile. You have to refresh your activity feed to check for asks. Why not have the activity page icon be temporarily replaced with the inbox icon with a notif bubble on it, kind of like it does when you get a PM?

Title Vane Developer Friend & Foe AB Publisher Friend & Foe AB Release Date January 15th, 2019 Genre(s) Adventure, Indie Platform PlayStation 4 Age Rating E for Everyone 10+ Official Website
The great Roger Ebert once asserted that “Video games can never be art”. Ebert contrasted more traditional forms of storytelling such as plays, dances, and films to video games. He insisted that those other art forms could not be won; they could only be experienced. I deeply admired the musings of Roger Ebert when he was still alive, but I always felt that this particular criticism was a bit misplaced. I hold that what defines a “true piece of art” is expression and the intent of the artist. While it’s true that some games exist for the sole purpose of “eating quarters,” there are many more that allow developers to express themselves in ways that aren’t possible in other art forms. While I haven’t nearly the same level of credibility on the subject as Ebert did, the time that I spent playing Vane makes me further contend that Ebert’s opinion was flawed.
Vane is the type of game that throws players right into the action without warning. At its onset, our protagonist appears to be a small child carrying some sort of golden artifact. This child is caught in the middle of a violent lightning storm and is surrounded by the derelict remains of a former city. Where did this child come from? Why are they alone? What is the significance of that golden object that they are carrying? The answers to these questions won’t become apparent right away, nor will they be spoken or written outright. Instead, the story of Vane and the purpose of the child’s journey are gradually told through traversing various environments and observing different scenes that occur along the way.
Trying to relay the story of Vane for the purposes of this review is difficult for two reasons. First, there really isn’t much to say. As alluded to above, there is absolutely no dialogue present. Everything is pieced together through your interactions with the world and observing the sinister characters that lurk in its shadows. Second, half of the experience comes from filling in parts of the story as you play the game. Having said all of that, let me provide a brief rundown. As previously mentioned, you start off as a small child in a storm. Once you finally reach the edge of the storm, a looming figure wearing a golden mask stops you and uses some strange power to transform you into a crow. This is the point where the game officially begins. As a bird, you will soar over a number of different environments and look for objects to interact with. The only tools at your disposal are your wings and your call, which can attract other birds to assist you. As you progress further, you will repeatedly encounter the same strange figure from before. Sometimes it will hide in the shadows and other times it will appear right in front of you. Little by little, its presence and your objective become clearer and clearer.
That last point is perhaps my favorite part of this game: despite the player not understanding what the objective is, events unfold as if the protagonist is fully aware. Once I reached the game’s conclusion and saw exactly what I had been working up towards, I was pleasantly surprised. Every scene leading up to that point suddenly made a lot more sense. If Roger Ebert had been looking for a game that could only be experienced, not won, then I believe he would’ve appreciated Vane. I truly enjoy games that deviate from the standard formula and simply exist to be experienced. I found myself drawing many parallels to Flower, another title that takes this approach. Of course, Flower is a much happier, lighthearted game than Vane, but both focus more on creating unique experiences rather than simply completing levels.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Speaking of similarities, let’s shift gears and talk visuals. The visual style of Vane is very reminiscent of titles like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Call me crazy, but I initially scanned the credits to see if the same development team had been involved in some way. Make no mistake though, all similarities aside, the style and presentation of Vane are still very unique. Perhaps most striking are the colors. When you transform into a bird and begin to take flight, the usage of blacks, blues, and greens are all very pleasing to the eyes. The usage of bright yellows and reds is also nice when contrasted with the otherwise dark and gloomy environments. That’s another topic it in and of itself. While the different places that you visit throughout the game will generally be dark in both lighting and color, the designers placed heavy emphasis on important objects and areas by making them appear much brighter. I really appreciated this and it made each location feel all the more foreboding. The last note that I’ll make about the visuals pertains to the shading. Everything in this game is shaded in a way that reminds me of a cinematic animated movie. Take a look at any of the locations that you visit or at and the character models and you’ll see exactly what I mean. While I can’t pinpoint exactly what it was, something about this just made me smile. All in all, I’d give the visuals an A+.
For me, visuals and sound design often go hand-in-hand. That was certainly the case for Vane. The soundtrack to this game can best be described as a mixture of melancholy synth tracks and ambient environmental sounds. Think Fez meets Blade Runner and you’ll have a pretty good picture of what I’m describing. I found that the initial scenes stuck with more ambient music while later scenes delved more towards dark synth. Both fit really well with the settings that they were paired with. Combined with the visuals, I felt completely sucked into the screen at any given moment. The people responsible for both the art and sound designs no doubt worked closely with one another. Much like its visuals, I’d give Vane’s sound score an A+.
It may be easy for some players to dismiss such a game as “artsy” if the gameplay doesn’t hold solid. With that said, let’s take a look at what you actually do in this game. With the exception of some known bugs, I found the gameplay to be rather interesting as well. As mentioned above, certain scenes will have you traverse the world as a bird while others will have you interacting with things as a human. The bird scenes focus more on flying around and locating certain objects to activate. You encounter these objects as a human too, but with the added benefit of having two hands and a voice to shout. Expanding further on the actual mechanics of the game would spoil the experience, so I’ll instead highlight some of those aforementioned bugs. The developers were quick to patch some of the more annoying glitches when I first got a hold of my copy, so those can be largely ignored at this point. There are however some persistent issues that still need to be addressed.
One major problem is with the AI of other characters. At points, you will need to call on the assistance of others to solve puzzles. While great in theory, often these NPCs will cease to perform their duties if they become stuck in certain animations (like pushing objects). This makes the later scenes just a tad frustrating at times. Having these other characters help you solve puzzles is neat, but also weighs down an otherwise enjoyable experience. The other issue is less of a glitch and more of a design flaw. There are a total of six playable scenes in total, each roughly 45 minutes to an hour in length. While the game won’t indicate this to the player, autosaving is done at the beginning of each scene. There is no way to save manually and there is also no indication that autosaves are being performed. While I understood and accepted this once I was made aware, it was rather irksome at first. I ended up losing the first hour of my time with the game because I had to turn off the PS4 and didn’t realize how the autosaves worked. The easiest way to tackle this issue would be to use a little autosave symbol of some kind in between scenes (not just a loading symbol). In its current state, I’d give the gameplay a solid B.
When all was said and done, I had only spent five to six hours in total with the game (perhaps seven if you count the first hour of lost progress). While some may take issue with this, keep in mind that with a price tag of just $24.99, buying this game is comparable to seeing one or two really good movies. Or if you prefer, think of it as taking five or six hours to stroll through a special art exhibit. I can say that in my experience with it, it certainly strengthened my opinions about video games and the art world. Had the game been slightly longer and had it been free from some of the technical issues with its gameplay, I could easily have seen myself giving this a 5/5. Keeping in mind that those bugs can be addressed with future patches and updates, I’m happy to settle with a 4 instead (though it really deserves a 4.25). Vane is currently available for digital download on the PlayStation Store. If you enjoy artistic puzzle games and you’ve been looking for something new and unique, you will enjoy this game.

I enjoyed the character of Doug when he was introduced back in Season 11, so I was overjoyed to see Doug return in last week’s Supernatural ‘Breakdown’. Which means I couldn’t wait to talk with Brendan Taylor, the actor who brought Doug to life. We caught up by phone the day after the episode, and despite being interrupted by multiple bouts of laughter and several US-to-Canada phone glitches, we had a great chat. Doug returns as the love interest of Sheriff Donna (Briana Buckmaster) who is also one of the stars of the proposed Supernatural spin-off, Wayward Sisters. We've split Brendan Taylor's interview with Lynn into two parts as it's very long as we know our Lynn gets deep with everyone on Supernatural. [caption id="attachment_53077" align="aligncenter" width="696"] Photos: Brendan Taylor[/caption] Lynn: I loved that episode so much last night!! Brendan: I’m quite happy with it! Obviously, reading the script, it was fun to read, and I think it was nice that compared to some episodes that maybe have more fantasy involved, this one had more realistic elements. L: It seemed like an old school Supernatural episode, getting back to those horror-film-in-42-minutes type thing, yet it also had emotionality and humor. That’s kinda what Supernatural is known for, being able to combine all those things in a way that actually works. It really was a solid episode. B: Yeah, it felt good. Amyn [Kaderali], the director, was really great. He gave us a lot of leeway and took a lot of our input. There were a couple of lines in there that Briana and I were able to offer some thoughts because Amyn hadn’t directed the show before, so we would say, we think the characters might say this or say it this way, and he was all for it. It was kinda cool. L: I love when that happens, and that Supernatural seems to be such a collaborative show.  I have a game I play with Jensen Ackles where I try to guess all the lines that aren’t scripted, because sometimes they’re some of my favorites.  Can you give me any examples of when that happened in this episode? B: Yeah, sure. One that I was thinking of that I thought worked well was when I go to sit in the car with Jensen and chat and give him the file, and I guess try to get some advice about Donna and so forth. His line is “well you’ll always be there for her, right?” And the scripted line is “absolutely” or “of course.”  But what do I say? I thought Doug would say “you betcha.” L: (laughing) Oh yes B: Because he would! And that sort of dialect, anyone else saying “oh you betcha,” it could kinda come off as maybe sarcastic, but to a Minnesotan... L: Yes! B: There are many instances when Briana says that and it’s like, yes, that’s her way of saying it. L: I like that because in a subtle way that sort of establishes the relationship and the closeness and the similarity of Donna and Doug, you know? He says it too, like he’s right there with her, which is part of his importance to her. B: Exactly, yeah, that’s why I thought it was important too. The reason why we’re together and we get along – although the show alludes to us being together now for two years almost in real time, since Plush aired – we think and do things the same way and speak the same way, and I think that speaks to their connection for sure. L: I was impressed with some of the subtle things you did that I think showed us early on that maybe Doug was gonna have a problem with all this. There’s a scene where Doug and Dean and Marlon (the cashier-turned-vampire) are watching the live auction video for the first time, and Doug just flinches and turns away. It seemed to telegraph that even though obviously that’s a normal reaction, this isn’t going to be Doug’s thing. B: I think that’s a testament to the writing [by Davy Perez] as well, that we even have a scene where we all have to watch that. We all objectively are watching something that normally happens in Supernatural, people getting beheaded or whatever, but to watch someone see that as an outsider, I think we almost forget that Doug doesn’t know that. It’s not really brought up until then; it’s early on in the episode. To us as viewers who watch the show, that’s all normal in this world, but Doug is a reminder that this is not normal! (laughing)  It’s not supposed to be normal. L: (laughing) Yes, we Supernatural viewers end up with a skewed view. B: And having said that, Doug is a cop, and he could have easily come across something like that, but he’s also a small town cop, and that’s a pretty intense thing to come across, the organized mutilation of people… L: At a live televised auction no less… Even for Supernatural, that was tough to watch. B: Yeah.  I think it might be written that I look away, but I definitely made a point of making it clear that Doug can’t watch this easily. L: I liked that, the sort of telegraphing of how he’s going to react to all this. And I liked that in the first episode we saw Doug, he was mostly a comic character, he was sweet, he cared about Donna, but mostly he was there to be funny. And in this one, you definitely did get to be funny, but you got to show many other parts of Doug. He was brave, he was willing to do whatever, but at the same time, and this was beautifully written – he says I got into this to help people, not to behead vampires. B: Yeah, and I think that’s another important thing. You’re right, there’s a lot written that’s funny but there are still moments even in the first episode where Donna is a little harsh with me, and I call her out on it. By the end I say like you know, you’re treatin’ me like a punching bag. I like that resolution and Doug is like I’ve got baggage too, and I’m a person as well but a person who cares. And again, at the end I think a lot of people – I’ve seen some of the reactions, and I’ve been quite surprised, I didn’t know how this would all go down, to be honest. You would know better than me how many people have been given an opportunity to be a hunter and have turned it down willingly. L: Here’s the interesting thing, and I think it’s why this episode hit me so hard emotionally. I study fan psychology, and I’ve written lots of books on Supernatural and its appeal, and Doug’s struggle here is part of what made this episode so poignant. It was a call back to the times early on in Sam and Dean’s life when they had to come to the realization that they couldn’t sustain relationships with people outside the life. Either the person would leave because they couldn’t deal with it, or they would lie to them and that would come out and the person would feel betrayed. So watching Donna go through that with Doug, I think it was hard for Sam and Dean, it brought that back. And for long time viewers, it brought that back too. B: That’s a good point. Knowing the show somewhat and its history, it was important to see that – I mean, I saw it when it was all put together in editing, I wasn’t watching what other actors were doing at the time (laughing) – but seeing Sam and Dean respond to our issue it’s like you said, you can tell that there’s a history, they’ve been through this before. And then they have that chat in Baby. L: Yes, and that was so important. This episode was all about Doug and Donna, but it was also about Sam and Dean. It also gave us insight into the Winchesters, which is what the show is always about and why I love it so much. B: Another thing that I noticed or wanted to mention is that a lot of people were sort of asking, why did you [Doug] run away, why didn’t you stay?  That last scene is a couple minutes, but in the time frame of waking up after being turned, trying to figure out what the hell’s going on - I don’t know how much memory you have of being a vampire (laughing) - but and then waking up and everyone asking how you’re doing and is Wendy okay and yeah and do you wanna join us, only having learned about these monsters that I became in at time frame of what, a half hour? L: Yeah and you were unconscious, so you’ve had like five minutes to process it! B: Yeah, it’s like I haven’t had the time to process any of this, and that combined with the dishonesty….You know, this was two years for them… L: Yes, and she hid it from him all that time. And that was part of what happened with Sam and Dean’s other relationships as well; they also didn’t tell the truth mostly, so for long-time fans, that hit hard. But I thought it was written, and you played it in a way that was 100% believable. That’s how I expected Doug to react. B: Yeah, I read it and of course when I found out I was back on the show, I was like OMG he just goes away? But then you do read it more, and it just makes sense, it’s too much to handle. I think that amplifies more what the hunters do also, to show how important it is and how different it is, what they do. Otherwise, everyone would be running around killing these monsters, and what’s special about that? L: And part of why they are such tragic heroes is that they make such sacrifices, and it is something special. B: It reminded me of Peter Parker and Mary Jane, that’s the common theme, they’re always back and forth and he can’t have her close because his enemies will know. She’s his biggest weakness etc. L: A theme on Supernatural as well, with Sam and Dean being each other’s biggest weakness – anyone you care about. And the reason the whole tragic hero thing is so compelling is because of that sacrifice and loss. Briana tweeted that you were an awesome scene partner in that last scene, you allowed her to go deep. What was it that you did that allowed you to give each other the ability to bring out such emotion? B: I didn’t know the director before this, but he pulled us aside – we shot that end scene my first day, not the first day of the episode, but my first day -- Which, to be honest, I was a bit nervous about just jumping in right away. L: OMG yes! B: Yeah, but it ended up being a bit of a blessing in disguise. As you know, those guys [Jared and Jensen] – I can’t keep a straight face around them… L: You and everyone else… B: They mess around, and they’re so good at it. Up to the very millisecond that the camera rolls, that they yell action, they’re screwing around, and they’re so dialed into what they do, they can do that. I mean, I wanna screw around more than anyone, but I don’t get the daily practice that they do. (laughing)  We can get into it later, but there are some scenes that I just couldn’t deal. L: Oh yes, that’s on my list of questions. I was just doing the serious ones first…. B: Okay, so that scene, the director took us into the motel room set, and we got into our selves, and he did a sort of rough blocking on it and Briana and I both – it’s one of those things, we’re so lucky to be paired with someone who takes what we do seriously. And Briana is very well trained in what she does, in theater and musical theater, and she’s such a committed actress. I’m trained the same way in theater, and I take what I do very seriously too, and I want to spend as much time to sort of give as much as I can of myself to it. The more you honor that situation, the more it means, you know? Because if you look at it a certain way, not honoring that situation is doing a disservice to everyone who’s been through that. And that goes for every acting performance, whether it’s a relationship scene like that that people can relate to, or something very tragic or a tragedy that not everyone experiences. It’s your task as an actor to follow up that story, so you better honor it for what it is. L: That makes so much sense to me as a psychologist. The realism of it, that’s why it’s so validating to all of us to see our stories told, and that’s how you make sure that works. I love that. I would imagine that when one person is able to be vulnerable and open, it allows the other person to go there too. B: Yeah, exactly, it’s like ‘oh okay, we’re going there? We’re going there.’  I think that’s true. Oh, they cut a really great scene, unfortunately. L: Oh no, what was it? B: There’s a scene where Doug and Donna are eating fast food in D Train. It was right after Dean told Doug that they were related. We’re eating fast food, but it’s sitting there getting cold. I said something about “well, it’s the sort of thing you tend to say…” and before we got to talk about it, Dean calls and we have to go. I could see why they cut it, but it was a nice little moment that built the new awkwardness between us before she gives me “the talk.” L: There’s always something that gets cut out that we find out later and are like aww damn. B: It was a good little scene. But it was important to give all that, to be there for each other. She’s so great that way. And I also need to mention that the boys are too. In that scene, that was my first day and we’re doing coverage, and it’s a pretty emotional scene to repeatedly do. L: I’ll say B: And there are a lot of set ups and four actors, and I don’t know how much you know about the filming process, but they will often sort of jump ahead if the script is in two different parts and we only have to shoot the last half and the first part is off camera so we just sort of pick it up and move on. That only works sometimes, but you’re sometimes robbing the momentum of the scene. L: By picking it up in the middle? I can imagine. B: If you don’t act out the whole thing and you just start on this word and keep going, but everything comes from the previous moment, so performance wise it helps to go back, but there’s pressure to move on. And I think it was both Jared and Jensen who -- it’s the very last moment when I leave, and we were told to kinda jump right in, and they suggested, do you want to say that? Do you want to go back to the beginning of the scene? And you know, they’re both off camera, it’s not about them, the coverage is on me. L: Right. B: And they’re like, we’ll go back. And that’s the coolest thing about them being at the helm of the show. They’re like okay, let’s go back, and everyone just drops into line, the cameras move out of the way, it’s like whatever needs to happen for the core of the scene. L: And they could so easily, after 13 seasons, just not care about the show so much, or about the other actors’ performances, but they do care. Enough to ask what you needed, and to make it happen. B: Exactly, that’s really true. It’s very common, even with certain name actors, they’re often not even there for your coverage. They put someone in, a stand in, to read their lines. L: That would be so hard. I’ve heard a lot of guest actors say that Jared and Jensen just don’t do that. B: It’s a very selfish thing to do, when people do that. As far as I’m concerned, you can’t have a scene without the person there. Who cares where the cameras are, it doesn’t matter. That’s secondary. It’s about the scene, and everyone needs to be there and be invested and be at the same level of commitment when you’re not on camera because you expect it when you’re on camera. L: Exactly. I do think it’s pretty extraordinary that they still care so much about the show and the characters. B: They really do. Jensen has directed several episodes and he – I was so impressed because I spent years on the other side of the camera doing set dec – so I know that side very well. There are other skills you learn from being an actor too, how to be on your mark and in the light, and when there’s a lot going on you still try to gauge what’s happening. I remember we were rolling one time and Jensen just said like move one foot to your right because the light is coming down here… (laughing) He just kind of moved me, he was paying attention to my light! L: (laughing) He snapped into director mode! B: Yeah, he just wanted to get the best out of the scene and make sure I knew that was the light set up. Because you’re not always told that, you go where you kinda go, but he just knew that. That’s pretty remarkable to see that level of skill in something that’s so specific. L: And something that’s optional too. I’m always so impressed by their ability to joke around and then snap into character just like that, but also by how smoothly everything works on that set. B: Yeah, I think that’s partially why it’s been going for so long, because there are lots of sets that don’t do that. And I think they all kind of know what they have, you know? They have this show that is of importance and works a certain way, and obviously, it’s a top down thing as well. If people at the top, whether it be number 1 and 2 on the call sheet, or the producers and the directors, they’re all positive committed people and I think that trickles down. Especially when you see the results and the reception. You would be an outsider if you tried to change that vibe, and it’s just not allowed. L: And it wouldn’t be good for anyone, it works. B: It just wouldn’t be tolerated very long. Part 2 of Brendan Taylor's Supernatural interview is right here.
