Hockey hopefuls prepare for World Juniors

With the last selection game wrapped up and nothing left to do but wait for the final roster, it was all or nothing for the players who spent the last four days vying for a spot on Canada’s World Junior hockey team.

“I think I came back and did what I’m here to do – play a solid 200-foot game,” said player Owen Beck of Mississauga, Ont. “Don’t give them anything, be good on face-offs, and try and knock in a goal or two here and there.”

It wasn’t done without support from the city. Hockey fans were lining up over an hour before Monday’s puck drop, with many skipping out on day-to-day responsibilities just to see Team Canada on the ice.

“It’s a once in a lifetime chance for anybody here in New Brunswick to see anything,” said hockey fan Trent Harper. “Here I am on a Monday morning, going to watch Team Canada come out and play some hockey.”

For some young hockey fans, the opportunity to see Team Canada was too big to pass up.

“I’m missing school today to watch Team Canada play,” said Callum Shannon. “I want to see Connor Bedard sizzle a top ten for me.”

Some fans are evening rooting for the opposing team.

“I’m most excited to be here to see my favourite player, Jacob Hudson,” said Hudson Warren.

Monday’s game against players from Atlantic University Sport Conference represented the player’s last shot. Team Canada’s goalie hopefuls were in both nets, finishing with a final score of 3-2 for the Team Canada squad.

“It’s a huge honour, I’m very fortunate,” said player Caedan Bankier of Kamloops, B.C. “There’s tons of kids that would kill to be in this position, so I took it step-by-step and day-by-day and I enjoyed my time greatly and had a lot of fun.”

Coaches tell CTV Atlantic this year’s roster included some tough decisions.

“These are never easy,” said Team Canada coach Dennis Williams. “They’ve made it tough, and I think, even more so, is not just our play on the ice, but their character, what they’ve done off the ice. They’re all pros. They’ve done a great job. They’re all on time for meetings and dressed appropriately. It’s just been a great group.”

It's no surprise that Moncton residents showed up to cheer on Team Canada as they skate for a once in a lifetime opportunity, especially since the team’s tournament games will all take place in Halifax.

The 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship is slated to begin on Dec. 26 in Halifax.

William Bankier, the Scottish Strongman was born on December 10, 1870 in Banff, the eldest of four sons of William Bankier , a hand loom weaver, and his wife Mary Ann.

As a child William became fascinated by the idea of being a circus performer, by the age of 15, he had twice run away from home, eventually joining a road show and finding a friend and mentor of sorts in its star attraction, a strongman with a drinking problem. As that performer’s absences piled up, Bankier saw an opportunity to showcase his own strength. Other circus jobs soon awaited, among them “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s Wild West Show in Wyoming.

As part of his act, Bankier would harness-lift an elephant. He could also jump over the back of a chair, frontward or backward, while holding a 56-pound weight in each hand. Another celebrated routine, the “Tomb of Hercules,” saw the strongman support a piano with a six-person orchestra and a dancer. Bankier would always end the performance by offering cash to the audience member who could carry a sack weighing 475 pounds off the stage. Inevitably, the strongman kept his money. He could also hold a man aloft with one hand, while juggling plates with the other”

After retiring, “Apollo” as he became known, became a wrestling promoter, teaming up with fellow bodybuilder Monte Saldo to form an academy for wrestlers, boxers and jiu-jitsu competitors. Die Panama Rail Road Company - von Ozean zu Ozean in weniger als drei Stunden

Die Panama Rail Road Company wurde am 7. April 1849 in New York gegründet. Die Gesellschaft erhielt für den Jahresbetrag von 250.000 US $ von Kolumbien die Konzession zur Überquerung des Isthmus von Panama bis 1966. Gründer der Gesellschaft waren William Henry Aspinwall, ein reicher New Yorker Kaufmann und der Bankier Henry Chauncey. Das Kapital der Gesellschaft betrug 7.000.000 US $, eingeteilt in Aktien über je 100 US $ nominal.

Mit dem Bau der Eisenbahn wurde 1850 begonnen. Ohne Rücksicht auf Geld und Menschenleben wurde an einer möglichst raschen Fertigstellung der Bahn gearbeitet. Es wird von ca. 6000 Arbeitern berichtet, die während der Bauarbeiten an Cholera, Ruhr und Pocken ums Leben kamen. Nach fünf Jahren Bauzeit, wurde die 76 Kilometer lange erste transkontinentale Eisenbahn von Ozean zu Ozean - eingleisig - dem Verkehr übergeben.

Die Fahrzeit betrug weniger als drei Stunden. Der Bau hatte das 6-fache des ursprünglich geschätzten Betrags, nämlich 8 Millionen US $ gekostet - hinsichtlich der Kilometerkosten die seinerzeit teuerste Bahnlinie der Welt. Die einfache Fahrt kostete zu dieser Zeit 25 Dollar in Gold. Schiffe fuhren auf beiden Ozeanen nach und von Panama und boten einen regelmäßigen Passagierdienst nebst Postbeförderung nach Kalifornien an. Die Route über Panama verkürzte die Reise von New York nach San Franzisko auf 8.000 Kilometer (über Kap Horn 20.000 Kilometer).

Der kalifornische Goldrausch (seit 1848) machte die Bahn in den ersten sechs Jahren nach ihrer Fertigstellung zu einer Goldgrube. In diesem Zeitraum lag der Gewinn der Gesellschaft bei ca. 7 Millionen US $. Die Dividenden betrugen 15 %, und erreichten 44%. Einmal war die Panama Rail Road Company mit einem Kurs von 295 US$ die teuerste an der New Yorker Börse notierte Aktie.

Mehr als 400.000 Menschen überquerten von 1856 bis 1866 mit der Panama-Eisenbahn den Isthmus. Die Glanzjahre der Bahn währten bis 1877, als im Norden der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika die Pazifik-Bahn von New York nach San Franzisko fertiggestellt wurde. 1880 wurden die jährlich fälligen Konzessionsausgaben der Gesellschaft an Kolumbien durch die Ausgabe von 3 Millionen US$ staatlich subventionierten Schuldverschreibungen kapitalisiert. Die Bonds waren ursprünglich bis 1910 fällig und wurden über einen Tilgungsfonds bedient.

Die 1881 gegründete Panamakanal-Gesellschaft des Franzosen Ferdinand de Lesseps musste sich wegen der Verkehrskonzession mit der Panama Rail Road arrangieren. In langwierigen Verhandlungen zwischen Paris und New York einigte man sich im Juni 1881. Die Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interoceanique de Panama erwarb 69.475 der 70.000 Aktien der Panama Rail Road Company zum Stückpreis von 250 US$. Zusätzlich übernahm die Kanalgesellschaft der Tilgungsfonds der Panamabahn-Gesellschaft zur späteren Ablösung ihrer Schuldverschreibungen über 3 Millionen US$.

Insgesamt kostete die Übernahme somit 20 Millionen US$. Je Aktie kam der tatsächliche Kaufpreis damit auf US$ 292, zu einer Zeit als das Papier an der New Yorker Börse mit weniger als 100 US$ gehandelt wurde. Den größten Vorteil aus dieser Übernahme verschaffte sich der Präsident der Panama Rail Road Company Trenor Park; er verdiente rund 7 Millionen US$ an dieser Transaktion. Trotz dieser Übernahme blieb der Rechtsstatus der Bahn derselbe. Es war weiterhin eine amerikanische Gesellschaft, die in New York eingetragen war; die von Kolumbien erteilte Konzession blieb unverändert.

Die Lesseps`sche Panamakanal-Gesellschaft finanzierte den Kauf der Panamabahn durch Ausgabe von 250.000 Schuldverschreibungen über je 500 Francs, verzinslich mit 5 % (Emission vom 7. September 1882) .1882 begannen die Erdarbeiten beim Bau des Panamakanals am Isthmus. Wegen großer technischer Schwierigkeiten mussten die Pläne für einen Niveaukanal jedoch 1888 aufgegeben werden.

Der Ingenieur Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923) erhielt den Auftrag einen Schleusenkanal herzustellen. Die finanzielle Situation der Kanalgesellschaft verschlechterte sich jedoch zunehmend. Der Versuch Lesseps eine staatlich garantierte Losanleihe zu platzieren scheiterte 1888. Im Dezember 1888 stellte die Panamakanal-Gesellschaft ihre Zahlungen ein. Erst 2/5 der notwendigen Erdarbeiten waren bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt ausgeführt. 450.000 Aktionäre und Obligationäre verloren fast 1,2 Milliarden Francs. Von 1892 bis 1894 erschütterte der Panama-Skandal Frankreich. 510 Mitglieder des französischen Parlaments waren der Bestechung durch die Lessepskompagnie angeklagt. 1894 wurde zwecks Erhaltung der Verträge mit Kolumbien vom Liquidator die Auffanggesellschaft Compagnie Nouvelle du Canal de Panama gegründet. Die Aktien der Panamabahn gingen damit in den Besitz der „Compagnie Nouvelle“ über.

Die Vereinigten Staaten übernahmen damit 6.887.000 US$ des Kapitals der Panama Rail Road Company und kauften in den Folgejahren den restlichen Streubesitz auf. Das Börsenhandbuch „Poor´s Railroad Volume“, New York, berichtet 1931 über die Panama Rail Road Company:

Kapital: 7 Millionen US$ eingeteilt in Aktien über je 100 US$ nominal. Gesamtkapital im Besitz der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. 153 Meilen Streckennetz, 24 Lokomotiven, 1109 Waggons, 4 Dampfer zum Betrieb der Panama Rail Road Steam Ship Line. Dividenden: 1924-1931 5% p.a., Sitz der Gesellschaft: New York.
