KOKIA in flashback - 2006

The year of 2006 is an exciting one for KOKIA. She has gone abroad to perform before, but now she makes it all the way to Europe for concerts in Paris, France and represents Japan at MIDEM 2006, the World Music Market, in Cannes. Her new album aigakikoeru ('listen for the love') even gets a French/European release in November, ahead of the Japanese release next year and with an exclusive track. It is not her first album this year; she has enough songs to compile her first best of-album, resulting in the release of Pearl and Jewel, collecting her best of songs and promotional videos respectively.

Although KOKIA has been creating music for games and (animated) series and movies since the beginning of her career, the start of 2006 puts the spotlight on her with the single Ai no melody/chouwa oto ('melody of love/sound of harmony'), the opening and ending song for the movie Origin: Spirits of the Past (Giniro no kami no Agito in Japanese). Especially Chouwa oto ~with reflection~ turns into a much-requested hit, with KOKIA still regularly performing this song almost 20 years later. It is a new version of Chouwa, the first song on her album trip trip from 2002, which incorporates KOKIA-go ('KOKIA-language') by reversing the syllables of the Japanese lyrics.

And last but most definitely not least, 2006 is the year KOKIA becomes independent. In May, she decides to start her own private office, anco&co, which she runs to this day, in order to more freely express herself as an artist rather than being tied to the Japanese music scene. Aigakikoeru is her first release after her independence.

She starts her 47 Stories concerts this year, intending to visit all 47 prefectures of Japan, although in the end doesn't manage to get to all 47.

Dolby Surround 2014 vs Pro Logic II

From what I understand, it's been occasionally debated for some 10 years now, whether Dolby Surround can in fact replicate Dolby Pro Logic II. Even more so since many surround receivers now only offer Dolby Surround, e.g. my own Yamaha RX-V685.

So I decided to test it with the true indisputable way: Mario Kart Wii, a game heavily designed around Pro Logic II support.

I set the receiver to 5.0 (instead of 7.0) by turning off the back speakers, set the decoder to Dsur, put the Mario Kart Wii disc into my increasingly worn-down Wii U, and set up VS Mode on Toad's Factory.

The result: It does work. Pretty much indisputably. The music ran through the 3 front speakers, while the side speakers (The de facto rear speakers in a 5.1 setup) played the karts' immediately nearby sound effects like stadium crowds, obstacles, nearby cars, etc.

2023 Japan Rugby League One fixtures & how to Watch

The 2022–23 Japan Rugby League One – Division 1 season is the twentieth top flight league season scheduled to be played in December 2022 through to 2023, in the newly rebranded Japan Rugby League One. The competition consists of twelve teams, including two promoted teams from Division 2, Sagamihara Dynaboars and Hanazono Liners.

The format and schedule was announced on the 16th of September 2022. It will consist of a round-robin fixture, before entering into a knockout style play-off for the final four teams. It will feature two conferences (A, B). Teams in each conference will play the teams in their respective conference twice (one at home, one away), and six matches against all the teams in the other conference, three being at home and three away. Each team will play a total of sixteen seasonal fixtures, plus additional play-off matches, including relegation play-offs.

Japan Rugby League One (JRLO) 2022-2023 season kicks off in Tokyo on Saturday 17th December 2022 in round 1 with several of the title-contending teams squaring off in Division 1, but there is action across all three divisions this weekend.

Sonor Signature Series drum set with cymbals and hardware, played on stage, ca. late ‘70s, early ‘80s

7-piece drum set, including bass drum, snare, 2 rack toms, and 2 floor toms, synthetic drum heads, beech shells with bubinga finish, steel drum casings, brass Sonor plaques affixed to each drum case, with Zildjian hi-hat, ride, and crash cymbals; wear consistent with road-use, including scratches and chips to the wood, some dents and rust to the hardware.

An essential part of the Dead’s sound throughout the ‘80s

Kreutzmann and Hart both switched to using Sonor sets around 1979, and continued to play them together in their dual-drum performances until 1986 or ‘87, when they began to use Yamaha drums. The Rhythm Devils’ Sonor sets not only helped to define the Dead’s sound during these years, through their regular improvised drum sequences at shows, but they were also featured at some of the band’s greatest performances and landmark shows.

When Kreutzmann’s version of this set was sold at Bonhams in 2012, Rock Scully said, “There is some truly great music and history surrounding this group of instruments as these saw the best years of the band's big stadium shows, a concert in Egypt, the Hollywood Bowl, the Greek Theater shows in Berkeley and even some shows with the Who in Europe. Also it should be noted that the construction of these drums is unique to the Sonor brand. … Because of the craftsmanship and hours put into their construction these were very expensive instruments even in 1975.
