i accidentally went down the fake dany rabbit hole on reddit and to be clear, i think it’s fun to think about but it’s absolutely not gonna happen BUT one of the main pieces of evidence for this is…A Thing and that’s Dany’s memory of the House With The Red Door:
…one night Ser Willem Darry and four loyal men had broken into the nursery and stolen them both, along with her wet nurse, and set sail under cover of darkness for the safety of the Braavosian coast.
She remembered Ser Willem dimly, a great grey bear of a man, half-blind, roaring and bellowing orders from his sickbed. The servants had lived in terror of him, but he had always been kind to Dany. He called her "Little Princess" and sometimes "My Lady," and his hands were soft as old leather. He never left his bed, though, and the smell of sickness clung to him day and night, a hot, moist, sickly sweet odor. That was when they lived in Braavos, in the big house with the red door. Dany had her own room there, with a lemon tree outside her window. After Ser Willem had died, the servants had stolen what little money they had left, and soon after they had been put out of the big house. Dany had cried when the red door closed behind them forever.
She mentions the lemon tree more than once:
All that Daenerys wanted back was the big house with the red door, the lemon tree outside her window, the childhood she had never known.
And again she sees it in the house of the undying:
And there outside the window, a lemon tree! The sight of it made her heart ache with longing. It is the house with the red door, the house in Braavos. No sooner had she thought it than old Ser Willem came into the room, leaning heavily on his stick. "Little princess, there you are," he said in his gruff kind voice. "Come," he said, "come to me, my lady, you're home now, you're safe now." His big wrinkled hand reached for her, soft as old leather, and Dany wanted to take it and hold it and kiss it, she wanted that as much as she had ever wanted anything.
But we get it mentioned several times that there are not citrus trees in Braavos. Sam says it here:
Trees did not grow on Braavos, save in the courts and gardens of the mighty.
And then there is Arya's description:
Braavos, devoid of grass and trees ... They have no trees, she realized. Braavos is all stone, a grey city in a green sea. ... In the forest, they see all. but there are no trees here ...
Now, this could mean she stayed with the Sealord of Braavos, since he signed the marriage contract with Dorne as a witness:
"It is a secret pact," Dany said, "made in Braavos when I was just a little girl. Ser Willem Darry signed for us, the man who spirited my brother and myself away from Dragonstone before the Usurper's men could take us. Prince Oberyn Martell signed for Dorne, with the Sealord of Braavos as witness." She handed the parchment to Ser Barristan, so he might read it for himself. "The alliance is to be sealed by a marriage, it says. In return for Dorne's help overthrowing the Usurper, my brother Viserys is to take Prince Doran's daughter Arianne for his queen."
Except George has been Cagey As Fuck about this when asked TWO separate times:
Q: “Dany remembers a lemon tree outside the house with the red door in Braavos, but citrus trees shouldn’t really grow in Braavos’s cold, foggy climate. Is this discrepancy significant? Does it point to future revelations about Dany’s past. Thank you so much.”
GRRM: “Very perceptive of you. Yes, it does point to … well, that would be telling.”
And again here:
Question: “How old was Daenerys when she left the house with the red door, was it located close to the palace of the Sealord of Braavos?”
Answer: “That’s a interesting question. But I don’t think I’m going to answer it. There’s a certain revelation about the red door that will come into the books that I have yet to write. So we’ll keep an eye to it.”
Obviously there’s the whole lemongate thing, with some saying this means she’s a fake - some say Blackfyre, some say Rhaegar’s daughter. I think it’s more likely her memory is just faulty; she was so young when this happened, and we see Ned, Sansa, and Bran misremember things that traumatized them because it’s a very common coping mechanism. There’s theories around her memory as well - she was in Tyrosh or she was in Dorne.
But for me, it’s more about WHY he’s being cagey and WHY there’s this discrepancy in her memory. If she was really in Tyrosh or Myr or Dorne, why does that matter? I think it’s something that will only matter to Daenerys, and not the plot at large. Will she find the house with the red door or hear the story from Doran (or Areo??) and find out she misremembered that way? And why will it affect her? I’m not sure if “Daenerys realizes even those memories are tainted by the fact that she was only in Dorne because of politics and was sent out of Dorne and safety and now holds a grudge” because…the memories are already tainted by how sick Willem Darry was as he was dying.
Like, “Dany was Rhaegar’s daughter raised by Willem Dustin then sold to Illyrio and passed off as Rhaella’s last child who actually died, because it puts Viserys ahead of her in succession and gives him a Targaryen bride to marry or sell off and Viserys has spent the last few years torturing her into thinking she’s his sister, the same way Ramsey tortures Theon into being another person” is such a crackhead theory lmao but a revelation like that would shake Dany to her core. “Dany misremembered Dorne as Braavos” like that’s such a nothingburger so WHAT IS GOING ON. If she just invented a happier memory for herself to hold onto, what is the original memory hiding? Is it not even real, and while the lemon tree is our sign the memory is fake, the real secret is the red door and it’s going to be some metaphor for something?
The House With The Red Door represents everything Dany really wants from her life deep down and that’s to belong somewhere. So what I’m leaning towards is it’s not even a real memory, just something she cobbled together from several of Viserys’ stories. It’s not just that the lemon tree and red door were in the wrong place but none of it existed. Not the peace she had, not Willem Darry. That seems devastating enough that if none of it was real, that she can never find peace, that the red door she was chasing all these years never existed. I think it might be, emotionally, a big step in her deciding to burn king’s landing.
But it was not the plains Dany saw then. It was King's Landing and the great Red Keep that Aegon the Conqueror had built. It was Dragonstone where she had been born. In her mind's eye they burned with a thousand lights, a fire blazing in every window. In her mind's eye, all the doors were red.
and later on:
She saw sunlight on the Dothraki sea, the living plain, rich with the smells of earth and death. Wind stirred the grasses, and they rippled like water. Drogo held her in strong arms, and his hand stroked her sex and opened her and woke that sweet wetness that was his alone, and the stars smiled down on them, stars in a daylight sky. "Home," she whispered as he entered her and filled her with his seed, but suddenly the stars were gone, and across the blue sky swept the great wings, and the world took flame.
If there was never any red door, never a lemon tree, if even her sweet memories of Willem Darry are somehow false, just a scared child trying to make sense of the world, I think that loss will completely push her towards the path of destruction, and she won’t just embrace the dragon, she’ll embrace its devastation as well. Behind the red door isn’t her salvation, only destruction.
The door loomed before her, the red door, so close, so close, the hall was a blur around her, the cold receding behind. And now the stone was gone and she flew across the Dothraki sea, high and higher, the green rippling beneath, and all that lived and breathed fled in terror from the shadow of her wings. She could smell home, she could see it, there, just beyond that door, green fields and great stone houses and arms to keep her warm, there. She threw open the door. “… the dragon …” And saw her brother Rhaegar, mounted on a stallion as black as his armor. Fire glimmered red through the narrow eye slit of his helm. “The last dragon,” Ser Jorah’s voice whispered faintly. “The last, the last.” Dany lifted his polished black visor. The face within was her own.

you know how people sometimes say they have to hurt because if they don’t, they’re so numb they won’t feel anything?
— sharp objects, gillian flynn
[Image ID: two gifs from 9-1-1 episode 4.05, "Buck Begins." Overlaid is a quote from "Sharp Objects" by Gillian Flynn. The gifs are comprised of two blended scenes, of which the central one is in color. the side gif is colored purple.
GIF 1: Teenage Evan looking at Maddie incredulously as she explains moving with Doug to him. This is blended with young Evan looking sad and worried as Maddie patches him up. The text reads, "a child weaned on poison."
GIF 2: Buck sitting in the back of the ambulance after the warehouse fire, his expression crumbling as his eyebrows furrow when he realizes he'd given up. This is blended with Buck's furious look as he speeds up his motorcycle. The text reads, "considers harm a comfort."

as the roman expert. Do you think that Rome was pressing his face into Ken’s shoulder to break the stitches or was Ken pressing Rome’s face into his shoulder to break the stitches?
are we seeing the poison drip through or a child weaned on poison or both?
Hi Erica 💕
I think it's deliberately shown to be a horrid combination of both. It's kendall seeing roman losing grip and knowing what his father would do to roman in that scenario to keep him loyal. it's also roman losing grip and, being the masochist he is, thinking he needs pain and humiliation to ground him, and submitting to it. It's this horrible mutual understanding of the roles they play, that their father established.
I do think there's something truly disturbing in the way kendall doesn't deny enacting that harm the way Logan would've. It's a step further where the harm is normal and expected even viewed as just another part of this role. Roman is somewhat shocked by it because it's coming from kendall and not logan, but he's somewhere familiar and it calms him as much as it kills him.
It's really heartbreaking in so many ways that Roman falters because he thinks about how others will view him not being ceo. He's not faltering because he wants what kendall has, but because he's aware others expect him to want it. Roman himself doesn't actually want it, but he wants to know why its not going to be him despite everything they've been through and his instinct in the face of that existential void is pain.
I think Kendall doing that to Roman is Kendall's way of showing and reassuring Roman that the reason it's never going to be Roman is because Kendall can hurt Roman and Roman will take it. It's like the dog cage game they argued about in Prague. Pain isn't pain to them. Pain is consistent for Roman, something reliable and sturdy in a moment of total doubt. Kendall does this as an act of both comfort and cruelty because, for Roman, there's no difference because a child weaned on poisin considers harm a comfort. the poison dripped through and they learned to swim in it by drowning each other and telling the other they liked it <\3

something about jamie surrendering himself to someone who doesn’t like him (even though that’s not actually true in the case of roy) being about 1) being used to subjecting himself to someone who doesn’t treat him well because of his dad and 2) masochism and wanting to be degraded/humiliated
Oh my god. Oh my god. Yeah :(
And those 2 things are inextricably linked I think. He wants to be hurt because it feels like home to him. “A child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort”

the town was paper, but the memories were not.
there are these fault lines where things don't meet up right.
the marks humans leave are too often scars.
the only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive.
we can never be irreparably broken.
every human life is worth the same and worth saving.
the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
i'm going to keep going until i succeed-- or die.
the greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love and be loved in return.
never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting.
you can't repeat the past.
a child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort.
if we could just love long enough and hard enough and deep enough, then the world outside would never, could never hurt us.
the holes in your life are permanent. you have to grow around them, like tree roots around concrete; you mould yourself through the gaps.
life is raw. everybody medicates.
don't go where i can't follow.
we are all just stars that have people names.
you fell in love with a storm. did you really think you would get out unscathed?
i am still learning how to stop apologizing for my wild.
your heart will fix itself.
how could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened?
even darkness must pass.
there's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for.

the thudding, continuous hits to the bag make her flinch — she finds herself half-pivoted, staring with wide doe eyes, frozen until the other crumples.
“hey. hey, medicine man.”
the cat is immediate in her speech. she has come to know baptiste with an infinite amount of affection, unconditional rivers of that feeling flow quite freely. he gives her his dimpled smiles and his charming words and he brings the sun in so much more than selina truly thinks is possible. baptiste is more than capable of it, after all. sometimes she’s a little excited when she can think of a good joke to share. just because he’s him.
but she knows, she knows all too well the weight of one’s sins. aren’t they heavy? and aren’t they too much to take sometimes?
(bruce’s cold blue eyes staring at her, the life fleeing from them as she watched. her claws screeching along the bars, her body disappearing out of sight, his arms wrapped around her and her wrapped around him in a wheelchair, his voice, stop hurting yourself—)
her sins don’t weigh the same — her kills don’t matter to her, she isn’t capable of extending that empathy so far. she doesn’t find herself ruminating or considering, doesn’t find herself tormented, not upset.
everything has been violent to selina since the first moment sweet brown eyes took in the world. a child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort, and the cat was bottlefed hatred in the steadily souring milk of unkindness. she has always and ever known anger and only anger, only how to respond to each hand held out by locking her jaws.
she kneels beside him, but winds an arm around him immediately to bring him in for an embrace. it’s instinctive, a fleeting desire to be tender, a need to pacify. to care.

[meta] What emotion is hardest for your character to handle? How do they try to manage this emotion?
OOC// Definitely anger. Both when it comes to his own emotions and others'. (This is so disorganized and rambly I'm sorry)
Milo suppresses his anger a lot. He doesn't like being angry, it feels bad and overwhelming, and it scares him. Growing up in an abusive household meant he grew up never seeing a constructive/healthy way of dealing with anger. To him, it's scary and destructive, it's yelling and slamming doors and punishments. And it reminds him of his father. But growing up in that kind of environment, growing up bullied and dealing with dysphoria/transphobia and mental illness, and not having much of a support system, it all gave him a lot of reason to be angry without any means of healthily expressing that anger. So, a lot of that anger was shoved down, and the negativity hurled his way became internalized and directed toward himself. He doesn't want to be like his father, doesn't want to hurt others, of course. And when you get treated like shit enough, you start to feel like shit, like you're the problem. You start to believe the things people say, to be angry with yourself. And in Milo's case, hurt himself.
There's that quote from Sharp Objects: "A child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort."
And it doesn't help that overwhelming emotions lead to magical mishaps. So his anger has literally been destructive at times, and he has learned that he does need to suppress his emotions when they're too overwhelming. And anger is one of the most overwhelming of his emotions.

🔥 alicent!!
oh ho!!! my unpopular opinion about her is what makes her interesting to me: she's a bad person.
the whole point of hotd is that no one on either side of the dance is a purely good or purely evil person. they all have flaws and nuances and they are all three dimensional people and they are all saddled with the yoke of patriarchy, dynasty, imperialism, legacy, etc. all the things that make the iron throne the exact sort of endless death pit that it is.
alicent had horrible things happen to her. she was abused, taken advantage of, mistreated. she has had an ugly and difficult life shaped by the people who should have been caring for her.
and she also perpetuates her father's cycle of abuse with her own children!! she actively wishes and enacts harm on her childhood best friend, on the future queen of the realm!! she has all the tools at her disposal to change the narrative of her life and she won't because she can't.
that makes her an incredibly tragic and painful character. she is imo incredibly well written as both a victim and a perpetrator of abuse. the fact that she is sitting in her gilded cage and polishing the bars instead of trying to slip out from between them is both tragic and infuriating. that's the point. the cyclical tragedy of her miserable life is perpetuated by her own hand. that's why it's sad!!
i've been so disappointed by both people who like and dislike alicent because i feel like so many people just want to root for soccer teams instead of meaningfully engage in the story. yes, she suffers. yes she is in immense and terrible pain. no, she is not the virgin mary. no, she is not a catholic saint.
"But there is no mysterious virtue in Justine’s suffering. The martyrdom of this Christ-figure is absolutely useless; she is a gratuitous victim. And if there is no virtue in her suffering, then there is none, it turns out, in her virtue itself; it does nobody any good, least of all herself." <- i already have this in my justine/alicent comparison but it really rings sooooo true for me wrt like her own attitude toward her suffering and self-punishment and the comfort she takes in perpetuating her own oppression and imposing it on others
like, the child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort! it's just silly imo to act like alicent doesn't want the people around her to suffer. like she doesn't take pleasure in torturing rhaenyra and her husband(s) and her children.
and it's also so upsetting to me when people are like "ha ha alicunt deserves to burn in hell what a dumb bitch!!" because like... i'm serious she is a very well written and nuanced character and she makes me so sad and i can understand not liking her but if you just want to call her an annoying stuck up bitch like you are being willfully obtuse. you are purposefully watching this show with your eyes closed and your ears plugged.
"hurt people hurt people" is like sooooooo trite and overplayed and like we get it we all watched house md but the thing is that it is true!! people who were victims of abuse go on to abuse others that is what generational trauma is! how can you look at alicent and just expect her to like. fucking what. fucking what!! do you want her to do??? you want her to like invent DBT and then put herself through it??
also i've talked to you about this lol but there is no happy ending for alicent ever. like she simply cannot escape the narrative that she has spent her whole life cocooning herself in and smothering everyone around her with. she is never going to end up with rhaenyra, or criston, or find self actualization. she is doomed like capital D fucking DOOMED like old valyria. ring of fire baby. black earth. i love her so fucking much.

‘  a  child  weaned  on  poison  considers  harm  a  comfort .  ’ says @particlexxdealer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She hadn’t expected her case to cross paths with a literal avenger but here they were, her at her desk in Alias scrolling through a teenagers social media while Lang sat on her orange couch.  The missing kid in question happened to be friends with his daughter and rather than try to look separate it was just easier for them to work together. Well, it might have been easier on him, Jessica wasn’t quite sure that she was benefiting from having someone watching her every move.
She’s already looking at him when he speaks so the words don’t catch her entirely off guard as she grabs her glass of the desk and leans back into her chair. “You think her life was that bad?” Jessica asks, as though she doesn’t already know the answer, wondering maybe he might see a detail that she’s missing. At this point what could it hurt? “It all looks pretty good on her pages.” She states knowing that’s the image that people want to put out there, that they’re happy and nothings wrong.
“How long have you know her? What do you know about her life?”

“ a child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort. “ from jon?
Tumblr media
sharp objects sentence starters | still accepting.
The backseat of the Lincoln was insulated from the outside world in a way that was almost isolating; the tinted windows excluding prying eyes, the privacy glass shuttering even the driver himself. Mary twisted a silver ring on one small finger, around and around, her gaze fixed on one of the belt buckles lying loose on the seat opposite.
"Poison is being dramatic," she said casually, but didn't look at him. There was something closed off in her expression. She knew exactly what he was getting at, and it was a road she didn't want to go down; from outside came the muffled scream of a taxi cab's horn, midday traffic and grey light filtering in.
"Everyone has a terrible childhood." Poison, he'd said, but that wasn't quite it. Rot, seeping in, black mould in her lungs, throat, sporing on her tongue. Hurting to avoid being hurt; hurting to be hurt. "You either get over it or you don't. Simple as that."
