“7377 Chinese Primary School, three classes. 916 Clay St. Miss Rose Thayer, Principal. 1895.  Photograph by Isaiah West Taber (from the collections of the California State Library and the Bancroft Library, Roy D. Graves pictorial collection San Francisco Views prior to 1906).
Separate But Hardly Equal
San Francisco segregated its Chinese school children from 1859 until 1871, when the city refused to fund any more classes for them. (In 1870, the California Political Code was rewritten to drop the requirement to provide any education for Chinese children, limiting the segregated separate but equal schools to “children of African descent, and Indian children.” San Francisco Superintendent Denman cut funding from the Chinese School, which closed on March 1, 1871.)
“Excluded entirely from access to California’s system of public education, the Chinese watched from the racial margins as black Californians fought their battle over the Broadway school. The decision in Ward v. Flood clearly held out the promise of access to public education for black Californians, and so too, perhaps, for Chinese. When, in 1875, San Francisco opened its schools to black children, the Chinese may have had reason to hope for similar treatment. But first the state laws that blocked their access would have to be challenged.
“As a first step, California’s Chinese relied on the traditional method of petition. In 1877, thirteen hundred Chinese residents, including many of the “principle Chinese Merchants of San Francisco, Sacramento &c.,” sent a petition to the State Legislature asking for ‘the establishment of separate schools for Chinese children.’ …
“In their petition, the Chinese presented themselves as honest, hardworking members of California society whose labors contributed a great deal to the wealth of the state. They complained that while they had contributed more than $42,000 in taxes specifically for the support of public schools, they had received no benefit in return. ‘This money,’ they wrote, ‘has been used for the support of Schools for the education of the children of negroes and white people, many of the latter being foreigners from European countries, while our youth have been excluded from any participation in the benefit. This we hold to be unjust.’ They asked that the school law be changed to allow the three thousand Chinese children between the ages of five and seventeen then in California the same opportunities as ‘the children of other foreigners.’ … ”
From: Bottoms, D. Michael (2013). “3 ‘The Most Satanic Hate’: Racial Segregation and Reconstruction in California Schools". An Aristocracy of Color: Race and Reconstruction in California and the West, 1850–1890. Norman, Oklahoma: University of Oklahoma Press. ISBN 978-0-8061-4335-4.
In 1879, the new California constitution allowed local governments to either force Chinese people out or designate specific zones for them (a rule that would be overturned in 1890).  Chinese San Franciscans avoided the exclusion of their children from public school in the landmark decision of Tape v. Hurley 66 Cal. 473 (1885) by the California Supreme Court.  In the aftermath of the partial legal victory by the Tape family, San Francisco Superintendent of Schools, Andrew J. Moulder, urged the California state assembly to pass new state legislation and enable the establishment of segregated schools under the separate but equal doctrine.

In response to the denial of Mamie Tape’s admission to Spring Valley School due to her ancestry in 1885, Joseph Tape filed a lawsuit on behalf of his daughter to force the San Francisco Board of Education to allow his daughter to attend the public school near the family’s home.
The court’s decision, however, failed to prohibit the state from establishing  "separate schools for children of Mongolian or Chinese descent, which occurred in March of 1885 with the passage of AB 268.  The legislation gave the San Francisco school board the authority to establish the Chinese Primary School in San Francisco.

Initially located in Chinatown at the corner of Jackson and Stone streets, increased student numbers compelled the school to be moved to 916 Clay Street between Stockton and Powell streets by the Fall of 1891, as indicated in a news report of that year about school board corruption:

Complaints about overcrowding induced  Andrew F. Hyde, the school board president, to propose relocating the school to the basement of the vacant Commercial High School building on Powell Street near Clay. (Commercial High School had been created in 1886 to prepare young people for future endeavors.)
By 1892, numerous repairs were made to Commercial High’s building, but the board deemed it unsafe. Teaching operations moved elsewhere while the building was still used for board meetings. During the same year, the board rejected a proposal to relocate the Chinese School to the building's basement. In 1894, Hyde reintroduced the proposal with the majority of the school board's support. However, and as Professor Joseph O. Jewell, recounted in his 2017 paper, Powell Street property owners protested for a month against the plan.  During the protests, property owners, journalists, and opposing board members framed both “social and spatial mobility” among the Chinese as threats to the middle-class white community. The protesters argued that the Chinese school jeopardized property values causing financial losses and downgraded the neighborhood's class identity due to the visible presence of Chinese.
The land use controversy of 1894, and white resistance to the intrusion of Americanized and other upwardly mobile Chinese onto Powell Street adds poignancy to the appearance by the Chinese Primary student body for the Midwinter Fair of 1894 in Golden Gate Park, which was photographed by Isaiah West Taber.

Their participation in the fair’s festivities occurred against the backdrop of white neighbors’ resistance to the relocation of their school to Powell Street, one block up Nob Hill.  The resistance would eerily replicate itself 80 years later when Nob Hill residents opposed the construction of the Mei Lun Yuen senior housing project at Sacramento and Stockton Streets.

Some historians have viewed the deployment of native-born children and other initiatives by the Chinese community to participate in larger city events as part of a deliberate civic engagement strategy to reassure the public and alleviate concerns about the Chinese.
Thwarted in its attempt to move, the school remained at 916 Clay.  By 1895, it had three classes with an enrollment of 90 students.
The building at 916 Clay was destroyed in the April 1906 earthquake and subsequent fire.  In the aftermath of the disaster, the school board erected a temporary building at Joice and Clay streets to continue educational operations.

While the city lay in ruins in the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake, the school board passed a policy on October 11 restricting children of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean ancestry to the “Oriental” School.”  When, in the same year, the Board of Education decided against the Aoki family who protested the refusal by the principal of Redding Elementary School to enroll their 10 year-old child, the Japanese government lodged a formal complaint with the U.S. Ambassador to Japan that this was a violation of the 1894 U.S.-Japan Treaty of Commerce and Navigation that established a non-discrimination policy for Japanese immigrants to the U.S.
Tumblr media
The actions of San Francisco’s local bigots led to a diplomatic crisis in which President Theodore Roosevelt, summoned the San Francisco mayor and Board of Education to the White House, to urge officials to allow the integration of Japanese students into white schools; the resulting compromise was the 1907 “Gentlemen’s Agreement” in which Japan voluntarily imposed immigration restrictions and the San Francisco school board allowed children of Japanese ancestry to attend normal schools.

The permanent site for the Oriental School would be completed across Clay Street in 1915 with an entrance on Washington, between Stockton and Powell Streets.  It was renamed in 1924 to Commodore Stockton School (my father’s alma mater).  Renamed again in 1998 for the first elected Chinese member of the Board of Supervisors, Gordon J. Lau Elementary School continues to serve the children of Chinatown.

Mark 13:1–4
3 Καὶ καθημένου αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ Ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν κατέναντι τοῦ ἱεροῦ ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν κατʼ ἰδίαν Πέτρος καὶ Ἰάκωβος καὶ Ἰωάννης καὶ Ἀνδρέας· 4 Εἰπὸν ἡμῖν, πότε ταῦτα ἔσται καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον ὅταν μέλλῃ ταῦτα συντελεῖσθαι πάντα;
My translation:
1 And as he was going out from the temple one of his disciples says to him, “Teacher, behold, such stones and such buildings!” 2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will certainly not here be left a stone upon a stone which will certainly not be thrown down.”
3 And as he sat unto the mountain of olive trees opposite the temple by themselves, Peter and Jacob and John and Andrew asked him, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be and what is the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”
Notes:
13:1
The genitive present participle ἐκπορευομένου (from ἐκπορεύομαι) with αὐτοῦ, referring to Jesus, is a genitive absolute construction indicating contemporaneous time with the following indicative verb λέγει below. The participle is modified by the spatial prepositional phrase ἐκ τοῦ ἱεροῦ.
The subject of the present λέγει (from λέγω) is εἷς, modified by the partitive genitive τῶν μαθητῶν (“one of his disciples”), and αὐτῷ, referring to Jesus, is the direct object.
διδάσκαλε is a vocative.
For the aorist active imperative ἴδε (from ὁράω), see note on 2:24. Here the word functions as an exclamation rather than an imperative, as the following nouns are in the nominative case rather than accusative as direct objects.
The interrogative adjective ποταπός (7x) is, “of what sort or kind?”, but here (2x) functions as an exclamation equivalent to, “how great”, “how wonderful” (BDAG). The adjective modifies λίθοι; ESV, NASB “what wonderful stones”; NIV, HCSB: “what massive stones”.
ἡ οἰκοδομή (18x) is, “building”, from οἶκος + δεμω “I build” (not in NT). οἰκοδομαί is modified by ποταπαὶ; ESV, NASB: “what wonderful buildings!”; NIV: “What magnificent buildings!”; HCSB: “What impressive buildings!”
13:2
ὁ Ἰησοῦς is the subject of the 2nd aorist εἶπεν (from λέγω) and αὐτῷ, referring to the unnamed disciple, is the indirect object.
The demonstrative pronoun ταύτας and adjective μεγάλας modify the noun οἰκοδομάς (“building”; see note on v. 1), which is the direct object of the present βλέπεις (from βλέπω).
The double negative οὐ μὴ with a subjunctive (ἀφεθῇ, aor. pass. subj. from αφίημι) functions as an emphatic negative assertion. λίθος is the subject of the verb, which is modified by the locative prepositional phrase ἐπὶ λίθον and adverb ὧδε (“here”).
καταλύω (17x), from κατά + λύω (lit. “I loosen thoroughly”) is, “I throw down” (most translations); NASB, NET: “torn down”; elsewhere in the NT, “destroy, demolish”. The relative clause with another οὐ μὴ + subjunctive (καταλυθῇ, aor. pass. subj.) makes Jesus’s statement here doubly emphatic (EGGNT). ὃς is the subject of the verb; its antecedent is λίθος.
13:3
The genitive present participle καθημένου (from κάθημαι, “I sit”) with αὐτοῦ, referring to Jesus, is a genitive absolute construction indicating contemporaneous time with the indicative verb ἐπηρώτα below (properly, the gen. abs. should instead have simply read καθήμενον, agreeing with αὐτὸν later in the verse). The participle is modified by the locative prepositional phrase εἰς τὸ Ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν; Thayer says εἰς is very common ‘after verbs signifying rest or continuance in a place, because the idea of a previous motion into the place spoken of is involved.’ Be sure to read some commentaries concerning the powerful imagery of Ezekiel 11:23 likely being invoked here.
The adverb κατέναντι (8x) is, “opposite, across from” (see note on 12:41). It modifies κάθημαι, here functioning as a preposition, taking the object τοῦ ἱεροῦ. NIGTC suggests a subtle double-entendre with the term; Jesus is not only sitting “opposite” the temple, he is “opposing” it.
Πέτρος καὶ Ἰάκωβος καὶ Ἰωάννης καὶ Ἀνδρέας are the compound subject of the imperfect ἐπηρώτα (from ἐπερωτάω); when verb precedes its compound subject, as here, the verb is often found in the singular (EGGNT). αὐτὸν, referring to Jesus, is the direct object of the verb, which is modified by the idiomatic phrase κατʼ ἰδίαν (“privately, by themselves”).
13:4
ἡμῖν is the indirect object of the 2nd aorist imperative εἰπον (from λέγω, here “tell”).
The interrogative adverb πότε, “when?” (not to be confused with ποτέ, “once”) modifies the future ἔσται (from εἰμί; the future is deponent), whose subject is the substantival ταῦτα (“these things”), referring to the events associated with the destruction of the temple (v. 2).
The neuter interrogative pronoun τί is the direct object of an implied ἐστίν, whose subject is τὸ σημεῖον (lit. “the sign will be what?”). The implied verb is modified by the temporal phrase introduced by the adverb ὅταν (lit. “whenever”).
ταῦτα is the subject of μέλλῃ (from μέλλω, “be about to”), subjunctive (present) after the indefinite ὅταν.
συντελέω (6x), from σύν + τελέω, in the passive could be “accomplished” or “come to an end” (BDAG); NASB, NIV: “fulfilled”. “Take place” (HCSB, NET) is probably a little too mild, understating the sense of God’s purpose. The present passive infinitive συντελεῖσθαι is complementary with μέλλω. ταῦτα, referring to the destruction of the temple, modified by πάντα, is the accusative subject of the infinitive.

Who's your fav book character
That's a tricky question. Overall, looking at the novel trilogy, Frights, and Tales... probably TFC Baby. I really liked her as a villain and thought she was interesting. In terms of the novel trilogy, I also enjoyed Carlton Burke and William Afton.
In terms of Frights, my favorite character would probably be Hudson. I've always imagined the FNaF 3 security guard as just some unlucky guy who got caught up in the middle of it all, and I think his backstory is rather tragic. Second place would probably be one of the characters in The Man in Room 1280. They're all pretty well written imo. In terms of antagonists, my favorite is a tie between Fetch, the Blackbird, and Julius.
Tales is a lot trickier to narrow down because I think a lot of the characters are actually pretty damn good this time around, but if I had to pick one, it'd probably be Luca. Dude got fucked over hard by people he thought were his friends and it's something I heavily relate to. Abe Thayer and Sasha are also pretty good. Antagonists/animatronics are even more difficult. However, I do like both generations of the Bobbiedots, I think Mr. Renner is wacky enough to make it in, and I think all of the water park animatronics are really cool. Honorable mention goes to Happs, he's a funky little dude.

Someone want to be my friend and help my plot out my NaNoWriMo for next month? It’s a steampunk Edwardian mystery. The main character is Abe Jones who is really a girl named Abigail but, well, women can’t be cops and she’s damned good at it. She’s on the frontier but she gets called to New York City to solve a string of murders. Where she is assigned to Detective Daniel Thayer. Anyone?

ab that last anon, how come u don't like to give out skincare advice? jw
it’s a mix of things. first of all, i don’t get paid to be a free dermatologist on the internet. i don’t really get anything for analyzing environment, diet, lifestyle, genetic, product, etc information that would go into an accurate profile that’s tailored to FIX what’s wrong with the person. then furthermore, there’s products that work for certain people and not other people. for example, some people SWEAR by thayer’s witch hazel. for me? doesn’t do SHIT. and by “people” i mean as closely genetically related as my own sister. she loves the stuff. my own genetic replacement (environment, lifestyle, etc EQUIVALENT) has a product that she ADORES.. that does NOTHING for me. so it’s one of those things where if i recommend a product & it doesn’t work, there’s people who will be like “oh you don’t know shit” & i actually know what i’m saying lol. then people wanna base reviews off of what they HEARD someone UNQUALIFIED recommend… like someone who knows NOTHING about the science behind human skin & chemicals & reactions is telling u what to do & ur gonna run with that? anyways your life lol! which is also why i can’t stand many blogs or skincare “experts” who can’t pass basic bio & will spew back to u what Page 1 Google says. there’s no critical thinking or analysis going on but that’s another topic lol.
plus i’m a fan of the whole “if ur good at something, don’t do it for free.” i’ll give out/rave about a product or a routine or something about MY OWN SELF but i would never tell anyone else what do explicitly bc i don’t know them & i don’t get paid to spend my free time knowing them when i could be doing something for me.
