#actual bookbinding!!! I can't believe it ;_;
Text
Hey hi hello I'd like to tell you about the wonderful gift my friend @swordsmans made for me.
I literally spent Thursday night just. Looking through it and turning it over in my hands. It's SO pretty and has SUCH A VISION in the making of it. Gyro's work is amazing. Just. Look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cover? The gold foil lettering? God. It looks so good on my bookshelf. And the DETAIL. They painted the edges of the pages guys, it looks SO COOL.
(excuse the low-quality photos, I have learned i am terrible at staging books, but just LOOK AT THESE PAGES.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay and now for me waxing poetic about this.
When gyro first mentioned that they were going to start commissions for binding people's fics I was excited for them and also planned to commission them to bind one of my own fics. I knew I wanted to get a bound copy of their fic The Sea Makes Bones of Bodies as well, because if you haven't seen the typesets for that and the copies they've made you really should (here's my personal favorite of their copies). So I reached out and imagine my surprise when I discovered Gyro was already planning to do so.
Genuinely one of my favorite experiences in fandom is seeing people make art for their favorite fics and be inspired by other fanworks so when I tell you that I was BEYOND HONORED about this and SO PUMPED, like. I don't have words. I'm so grateful to have received such a lovely gift (it's on my bookshelf next to my copy of Rilke. Rilke.) and I keep running around with a huge smile on my face because I still can't believe anyone liked my silly Zolu fic enough to be inspired to actually bind it and now I have it in my hands.
I don't actually know anything about bookbinding except for what I've gleaned from Gyro but I did wonder how it would like. Feel in my hand compared to traditionally published books. I'm super careful with it because I love it so much but this thing is not going to fall apart at the drop of a hat. Also the book just feels nice in my hands. Weird thing to notice maybe but Gyro also picked a lovely font? I read the fic (IN BOOK FORM AHHHHHHH) and it was just as readable as it is on AO3 (though obviously this is way better/more special askdfjajjakkkiss).
If you are interested in fanbinding and the actual process Gyro used to make this, they made a post here. If you would like to request a fanbinding project their form is here. Gyro's Kofi is here as well. And if you'd like to follow gyro's fanbinding archive that would be here.
Okay! I think that's all I wanted to say. Gyro it was so lovely to have a front-row seat to the creation process and see how you made the book. Genuinely one of the best gifts I've ever received, thank you so much!!!

hi! I messaged you a while back in august asking you for permission to bind bhah as a gift for my girlfriend. it was actually for a gift for our anniversary a few days ago and she loved it :) as promised, here are some pictures of the finished books, i hope i did it justice!
thanks to you and roman for writing a beautiful story, these books wouldn't be possible without you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HELLO?!??!?!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME THESE ARE INCREDIBLE I'M LOSING MY MIND. ROMAN AND I ARE CURRENTLY GUSHING ABOUT IT AS WE SPEAK
Tumblr media
wow. just wow. what an incredible honour and a gift, it's incredible. I'm obsessed with how it took THREE (3) volumes to fully bookbind and that chapters 11 and 12 take up the entirety of volume 3 lmfao. roman and I LOVE the symbols in the back and the way volume 2 ends with "Dear Jamie, Come Home" jkdgbadjkfbads and oH My god the books are blue too I cannot believe this.
i wish i could say "I NEED A COPY" at the top of my lungs and commission you but bookbinding is so much work as it is and worth every expensive penny that I can't afford right now lmaooo I'm so glad your girlfriend loved it as an anniversary gift, definitely did it justice and more. just absolutely amazing, well done I love it so much

Do you have any niche interests that you haven’t really talked about online?
Oh this is a great question, I have to think about what counts as niche LOL, most of these probably aren't that niche but I'm not sure what else to call them
I definitely have a LOT of interests I don't post too much about, and some of which I haven't fulfilled IRL yet (like I don't have the means to pursue it as a hobby)
Not really "niche" I don't think and I do post about them (not super in depth though) in the sciences include but are not limited to:
Zoology (this is what I'm going to go to college for once I legally change my name)
Entomology
Linguistics
Archaeology
Paleontology
Biology in general
General environmental sciences
Geology
Astronomy
Anthropology
And probably others I am forgetting
Some hobby based interests of mine include the following (I'll put a note next to the ones I can't actually fulfill as of rn):
Tea drinking/brewing/etc. (probably the biggest one I have) (I fulfill this)
Bookbinding (I can't fulfill this yet)
Painting (not very niche) (I fulfill this but I do not feel comfortable sharing any paintings at the moment lol)
Puzzle-solving
Calligraphy/penmanship (not currently fulfilling this)
Reading (not niche at all but generally I don't post about any of the books I read)
Movies? Not inherently niche but I don't post about this and I'm into watching movies like old films, indie films, and cult classics
Macrophotography (not fulfilling this because I don't have the equipment but I do take pictures of bugs with the macrophotography feature on our old family video camera even if they're not great)
Writing and poetry (not niche but I don't post about this at all, I really want to write starting books and currently write poetry)
Theater/acting (not niche but I don't post about this) (also can't fulfill it)
Tarot/divination (I don't truly believe in it but it's just fun)
Okay I don't feel like reorganizing my list above but going from above here are more things I'm into that can't currently fulfill or just haven't fulfilled yet:
Ceramics
Crochet
Fishing (I've done this like three times)
Things like chess, mahjong, go, shogi, koi-koi and other hanafuda games (I don't know how to play chess which embarrasses me greatly)
Sewing in general
Quilting (I've made one quilt!)
Woodworking
Bug keeping (I want roly polies and snails and some others)
Vulture culture (not very legal...)
Foraging (I have an uncle very into this that I need to help me get into this)
Geocaching
Hiking
Biking (been getting into this a bit recently)
Some miscellaneous interests of mine that I'm not sure how to categorize include the following (some of these might be sciences but I feel like they're not as science-y as the ones I listed before)"
Mythology (this...counts as antropology but shh)
Conlangs (counts as linguistics? sort of?)
Vexillology
Language learning (semi-fluent in Spanish, currently learning: Irish, Welsh, (Scottish Gaelic), Scots, Lushootseed, Japanese, Chinese, I want to learn some other languages as well though)
Sunscreen/sunblock/UV protection (I have no idea what to call this but it's a big interest of mine)
Hedgehogs (big special interest of mine throughout my life)
I collect old books (none of them are all that old and I don't seek out any old titles, but if I see an old book I'll usually buy it, although I've had to put a hold on this because I don't have space) (oldest book I have is very late 1800s)
I have no idea how to phrase this but I love learning about the cultures of different countries as well as the differences in variations of English, I guess this is anthropology and linguistics
Lost media
History in general (this falls into archaeology and anthropology)
Dogs? I'm very into stuff about dogs, not like breeding or dog shows but just different stuff about the breeds or stuff about dogs
Animation (I'm into its history and animated features)
Dragons. As a child I was so autistic about them that I refused to read any book without dragons AND they had to be neutral to good dragons (ties into mythology)
Fairies/fae (ties into mythology)
Plushie collecting (I don't seek out specific plushes or try to fill certain spots in a collection, I just like collecting whatever I like)
There's probably more I'm forgetting

I just finished CS and I gotta say, I'm so, so happy with everything
I thought I would be sad and hollow to see it end, as something I always looked forward to see updates of, but in the end it just really left me with a really soft, gentle and warm feeling in my chest
I've got to thank you, Naff, for writing and sharing with us what easily became my favorite fanfic of all time
It won a space in my heart without even trying. It made home there, and I don't think it will be leaving anytime soon
It shaped so many things for me, too, like amplifying my like for the cryptid into admiration
Surely shaped relationship goals too and I'm not even into getting into relationships
And it also made me wanna learn to draw monsters when I can't even draw a dog. Smh. At least hey, you're helping people improve, too!
Which speaks for itself of how much of a inspiration you can be.
Whatever you have planned for the future, if you plan to write more long stories, we are all here sitting on the sidelines with megaphones and big signs cheering you on because holy damn you know how to enchant and pull the heart strings of a poor soul
I don't know if I'll ever look at "sweetheart" the same way again after this story
I don't even know where I'm going with this anymore. I'm just very emotional. And also tired because of course I have to always sit and read your chapters at unholy times in the morning instead of sleeping
Either way, I wanted to thank you for how happy your work made me. Believe it or not but Cryptid Sightings helped me through a lot, in a very comforting way
I'm sure I'll re-read it a hundred thousand times before I even think of getting tired. Bookbind it for personal use, even, as long as you are okay with it —
(This fanfic was also the first one that made me want to learn bookbinding so bad. I blame you for throwing me head in into new hobbies and hyperfixations when I have a million already)
I hope you have the best day and the best night you can possibly have, because you sure made sure I had one <3
- Sincerely, someone who would hand you a flower for all this if they could
Oh my gosh, thank you!!! I'm so happy you enjoyed it! I'm actually over the moon that it could mean so much to you. If you want to book-bind it, go for it! Just for personal use only, though!
You're so sweet. I truly appreciate your kind words ♥
I don't know if I'll write a big 20-chapter fic like that anytime soon, it was a bit stressful and long. But! I'm really proud of how it turned out. It's a big project but it was a good one and it's crazy to think it started in October!
Thank you so much, babe! ♥

Re: bookbinding (do not read if you want to listen to self-deprecation and whining and yeah aka don't read unless you want to read a loser or defeatist attitude - thanks)
I've not been very motivated lately and I know I should be happy with what I am able to do but I see such amazing binds and know. . . I am a jack of all trades but master of none. Unless I have the right tools (aka a cricut) or something else, my binds will not be the "OH WOW" kind.
Following IG or seeing the amazing binds that people exclaim over has really killed my own confidence that people would actually want a binding I have done. Especially since the one book (two, actually, I gifted it to two people) didn't garner any sort of response online. Sure they thanked me in DMs but one did say they were going to take pictures and. . . never did. (Not that I am owed anything more than that, and I know life gets in the way.) And then my first (3) attempts at binding this one fic all ended in something I wouldn't want to send anyone.
Anyway, some people have AMAZING binds and I can't believe the creativity it takes. And some people showing their first binds end up having binds that are levels beyond what I'm able to produce in the year or so I started. Yes, I have gotten better. And yes, I am happy with what I have done but seeing so many others do so much better than me just. . . makes me feel like why even bother.
I'll probably come back to it. But. . . not right now.

Well that was obnoxious
I should've just stayed exclusively on mobile, but my phone is seriously dying and I want to blather about my actually better-than-expected progress this evening. I got to page thirty-four on Canva, which was all I had edited the apostrophes and quotation marks. I've already done something like ten new pages of this cleanup; that's really going to be the biggest drive.
The book punch is on its way in the next few weeks, and I ordered some *impressive eyebrow wiggle* tiny paper origami cranes for the bookmarks for Manacled! I'm going to try to spend this next few weeks typesetting Mirror.
I bought some red ribbon for Apple Pie--I bought a bone folder! Book corners, a five-ended cat tunnel, and a silverware organizer! I'm probably going to crack at some point in the next two weeks or so and buy yet another pack of paper.
I'm actually half-trying to find if there's a better paper I'm "supposed" to be using? And since I'm basically out of adhesive (except for the methcel???), I also went to find a new adhesive that's better for bookbinding.
You'll never fucking believe.
First, they still make Yes Paste--I gave my barely used, almost at least ten-year-old jar to my friend because she scrapbooks. Who knows how old it was when it was handed along to me, and still usable at the point at which I shared it.
Second, you better goddamn believe I'm slapping down nearly thirty bucks for about sixteen ounces of that shit. It'll last a million years.
Third, for those of you, like me and formerly not in the know, Yes Paste is kinda fucking amazing like. It's weird. So it's almost a solid gel. I'm not entirely positive how it's supposed to be applied. The few times I used it, I think I used my finger. I couldn't really think of how else to use it at the time without being destructive (I didn't have any disposable plastic cards on me at the time). I would recommend an old plastic card or, more formally, a rubber squeegee. It would be to thick and heavy to use a regular paint brush, but perhaps one of those plasticky "disposable" ones from Michaels? With the cheap metal handles?
Another cool thing about Yes Paste is, it's not wet!! Which makes it amazing to use on paper, because the paper won't warp.
I don't remember how it dries, but I feel like I remember it drying sticky; not sure if there were specific instructions for that, but I don't think I read the label on the jar.
Anyway, I do of course already have plans for my portion of next paycheck. I probably had plans for every check from the time I moved in till idk man, probably September or October, at the earliest. I needed storage for all the stuff that's been stuck in these totes I used to move. I want to revenge purchase this tree bookshelf (or a couple). My ex can't stop me and only made me want it more by saying they hated it. Some laptop accessories would not be amiss. I'm still waiting anxiously for a good opportunity to get a new soda machine.
Then I remembered that I need to start adding a couple of items to my wardrobe at least a month, if not every paycheck for a while. Soooooo......... Yeah. Then I added this bookbinding hobby to my roster for at least a few months here and there. Surely I'll get my fill after a while, like with the graphic novel, where I still pick at it here at there, waiting for some kind of trigger to throw me back in. Oh well, I needed to shake up my hobbies for a while. Don't forget also slowly gathering tools and materials for paper-making (just imagine using my leftover scraps of fabric from these fanfic books on my recycled paper sketchbooks--ooooooh).
Anyway, I can only expand within the bounds of my habit, so eventually the spending will need to stop. I only need so many dishes and kitchen accessories, bookshelves (okay, you think the limits of my container are going to help my bookbinding obsession???), clothes.......

Prophet
Mirabel fluff. based on one of my headcanon posts, I think it's the first one.
Tumblr media
In which Mirabel brings home a new member of the Madrigal family. fluff
warnings: none, unless you don't want Mira to be fucking happy.
"Bye mamá I'll be right back! I'm going to go get a new journal from the store." Mirabel informed her mother, waving over her shoulder as she passed the kitchen and headed out the front door.
It was sunny out and she took a moment to pause in the wonderful feeling, before starting her journey. She bounced down the stairs, passed the villa gate, and continued down the path towards town.
she hummed some old song from when her mamá was young. She didn't know the words but her tio liked it and that was more than reason enough for it to make her grin. She paused her humming to spin herself like a princess, accompanied by a small squeal and followed by a giggle. Her lovely mood lasted even as she ended her journey to the bookbinders shop.
The door opened with an all too familiar 'ring ring'. Her Attention attracted the attention of Mr. Castillo who was working on a custom leather piece and his daughter Alicia who sat behind the counter. "Ay! Hola Mirabel. In for a new journal?" Mr. Castillo smiled from his desk. she laughed at his goofy smile and waved, holding up her now full to the brim journal she'd purchased just a month and a half ago.
"si, you know me so well Senor!" She made eye contact with Alicia who looked like she was searching for a way to escape. "I'm thinking maybe a one with blue details on the front this time." she rushed out of her mouth as she turned her head. Castillo looked at her knowingly
"Well you know where to look," he nodded.
"that i do." she muttered already looking through the shelves of Journals, Diaries, planners, and sketchbooks all hand bound with leather covers. she ran her fingers along the spines before finding exactly what she was looking for.
Black leather, blue details, with a ribbon attached. just like always. she grabbed it and a random sketchbook excitedly. "perfecta!" she smiled to herself.
"hola Alicia." she spoke politely as she approached the counter.
"Buenos uh… Buenos días Mirabel." she looked nervous to be speaking at all but it only made Mira's smile wider. she reminded her of her tio, awkward and anxious. "how'd you sleep?"
"Asombrosa! you wouldn't believe how good i feel today because of it. nothing a good night's sleep can't fix i guess."
"Except maybe like world hunger." Alicia seemed to say without thinking. "oh Dios mío lo siento mucho! I didn't mean that I was trying to make a joke-."
Mirabel slid her money across the counter. "I get it." she grabbed her things. "Que tengas un buen dia hermosa!" She shouted over her shoulder as she left and she heard Mr. Castillo's roaring laughter nearly over-shadowed the small "Eck-" his oldest daughter let out.
Just like that she headed back the way she came so she could make it home in time to join her mamá in the kitchen while she made Arepas for the townspeople, maybe even empanadas if she felt like shaking things up today. She held books close, preventing her mind from wandering by avoiding the cracks in the stone pathway wobbling until she heard a bark. un perro? she looked up in confusion. Dogs weren't very common in Encanto. Actually pets in general that weren't livestock weren't often seen. she clicked her teeth together to call for it so she could look for a tag.
"tch' tch' tch here perrito." her eyebrows furrowed as nothing came forward. She was going to try again but she was cut off by a whimper and a growl. two perros?
"Here, perrito!" she called setting her books down and straying from the path, to follow the whimpers and snarls through a small grove of trees. there in the center stood a much bigger Brown dog snarling and snapping at a small white puppy who looked hurt. her hand flew to her mouth and her body flooded with anger. face lit with determination she reached down and grabbed a good solid stick. "AY! Scram you heathen!" She was careful not to hit it even if it was violent. it snarled and she frowned "Vamos!" She Demanded getting closer. her closing the distance seemed to scare him off. she watched him leave completely before tossing away the stick with a huff. "...poor perrito." She slowly approached the white puppy reaching out to pet its small head. "you're hurt…" she muttered. picking up the small creature careful of its injured leg. She found her way back to the path almost forgetting her three books on the ground in her hurry.
She all but ran back to la casa de Madrigal. "Hola Casita" she addressed the door as she approached. it seemed to realize her arms were full because Casita opened its door for her to come in.
"Mija, is that you? you're back quick. you usually stop and talk to the kids." her mom called from the kitchen making Mirabel jump.
"uh- yeAh-" her voice cracked nervously. "I just remembered I had a sewing project I told Isabela I'd work on for her?"
silence.
Mirabel began creeping slowly towards her room.
"really…?" her mom sounded amused. "alright then." just as the words left her mouth Mirabel Booked it down the hallway and into her room she closed the door tight and leaned against the wood. "dios mio…" she whispered. "you would have gotten me in so much trouble perrito." She put her armful of books to the side and laid the little puppy down.
"lets see…" she checked its underside for clues on what to call it. "ah, it's a chico."
she smiled scratching his stomach eager to watch his little tail wag.
"we should fix that leg huh? stay…" She was about to say stay here but then she realized. 'where would he even go, estúpida?' She stood up and left her room, closing the door behind her only to be face to face with her oldest sister.
"Hola, hermana." Isabela smiled widely. uh oh. "You would not believe the funny little thing I heard today!"
"mmhm? really?" She leaned nervously in her door frame using her body as a barrier so it couldn't be opened. "What was it?
"Well I was in the kitchen with Mamá when I heard apparently I had asked you to sew something for me. But I can't seem to remember what it was. Can I see?"
"NO." She panicked. "I uh...I mean no you can't see it because I'm going to the kitchen to see if mamá Will fix me some soup. I'm not feeling well. you know the one i like with the chunks of pork."
"are you hiding something from me?"
"no?" Isabella's eyebrow rose in suspicion "Okay yes."
"AHA! I knew it."
It's a gift for the family for 6 months of good communication and change. Okay admittedly that part wasn't a lie. She had been working on a gift for the family and if we get Isabela off her back.
"...fine. but I don't feel like you're telling me the whole truth. I'm watching you, Mirabel." She walked off back in the direction of the kitchen and Mirabel let out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding. "Casita. don't let anyone else in here ok?" The tiles beneath her feet shook and what she took as a "yes ma'am"
"Thank you!" she bounced off towards the kitchen. "Mamá! Do we have any soup left? I'm not feeling well."
"We should have a little leftover. You have to warm it up on the stove. Do you want to go lay down and I'll bring it up to you?
"no. I can do it myself. I'm just a little cold, yah know? I think Tia Pepa is A little upset." she spoke while finding what was left of lunch, a few days prior.
"I suppose you're right, it is a little chilly inside today." Julieta reached for a small pot and put it on the stove next to her work space. "How was your walk?"
"good! Alicia was in today."
"Did you play nice? you know she's rather sweet on you?" Julieta smiled. "you could have yourself a sweet Novia."
Mirabel wrinkled her nose. "Mmm, I did play nice. I called her beautiful."
"That's not what I meant. flirting only makes the poor girl more flustered." Julieta frowned. "There's talk of her getting engaged, ya know?"
"really? So soon? She's only 16."
"Dolores says it's a business deal." her mom frowned and beside her Isabela's mood soured. flowers growing through the tiles. Mirabel got too distracted by her sister's aura to notice her soup began to boil. "Querida. your soup."
"oh! right sorry… i think I actually might just go eat them in bed she smiled apologetically as she poured the soup into a old bowl. One of those ones that don't really match the other main scheme but the family kept it anyway because It was still a working bowl. This one was a God awful blue with yellow polka dots and if she remembered correctly her tio had made it in school when he was much younger. Julieta smiled at the ugly bowl in her daughter's hands. "alright. Don't break that bowl going up the stairs. It's one of my favorites."
"I won't." she called out disappearing from her mother's sight back up to her room. opening the door and sliding in she almost dropped her bowl at the sight of her Tio Bruno sitting on her bed. "JESUS CHIST-" She slammed her hand over her mouth "what are you doing in here?" she whispered loudly.
"oh me? I'm here for this little guy."
"what? did...did you have a vision about us?!"
"AH- knock knock knock. knock on wood."
"you did!"
"What did you see? Can I keep him?" she asks, placing the bowl of soup on the floor. and crossing the room to pick up the puppy so he could eat.
"I don't know, I didn't see that far." her Tio shrugged. "You should give him a name though. We can't refer to him as the dog." She pets his head softly as he eats beside her.
"How about, Prophet. because you saw her in a vision." she watched him tossed salt over his shoulder at the 'v word', getting it all on her blanket.
"TIO- '' she started to start scolding him for getting salt on her pillow but stopped when they heard a 'eek-' from the door.
Dolores.
"well... They were going to find out eventually." she sighed. "come on Prophet, let's go meet la familia!"

sooo, the bookbinding. I'm pleased to report that I did make a semi-decent book that I'll be okay with giving to another person
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the block without the cover on
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and the finished product! I can't believe I forgot to buy blue book cloth 🤦🏻 but the red kinda works as well. still far from perfect but I actually don't think it's complete garbage, so I'll count it as a win
bonus: Edgar wanted to help too
Tumblr media
(by laying on the couch and judging me)
as for grain, I did in fact end up cutting 500 a3 sheets by hand - I feel a little bad about the waste (turns out the grain on them is also wrong and you can get only 1 a4 sheet out of each ugh) but! it's so worth it look at the difference!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(me: ugh I can't believe I have to cut all these fucking sheets by hand
common sense: u literally don't have to
me: no I'm gonna)
the fic is Chosen Man by @sineala which is honestly one of my all-time favorites, fanfic or otherwise. go read it if you like historical fiction, slow-burn romance, idiots to lovers (tbf it's mainly the pov character who is an idiot tho), slow but profound character development, cultural exchange, language barriers, and overall well-rounded storytelling that will leave you closing the tab with a smile on your face. give it a try even if you're not familiar with canon; I think it stands on its own. I only watched the movie myself and thought it was kind of forgettable (it does have Channing Tatum as a Roman centurion tho, so if that's your thing, go for it), but this story stayed with me. and if you liked it, go watch Barbarians on Netflix.
Anyway that's it for now! can't wait to make the next one
