Random Thoughts on a Very Specific Thing: When Companions Choose Companions
Okay, so, off the top of my head, this has happened four times in Doctor Who's televised run. I'm not familiar enough with EU companions to say anything about what happens there.
Companions have become companions for a variety of reasons. The new series has this idea that the Doctor only travels with "the best" and they usually choose their companions. The classic series had a lot of Companions via Circumstance. Dodo and Tegan thought the TARDIS was a real police box and just walked in at the wrong time. Ben and Polly saw the Doctor enter the TARDIS, got curious, followed him, and then he took off before noticing that they were there. Victoria and Nyssa both lost everyone close to them and became companions because they had nowhere else to go. Ian and Barbara were straight-up fucking kidnapped.
There have also been several stowaway companions. The Doctor didn't invite them, but they Insisted. There are very few classic series companions the Doctor chose. In Logopolis, Four even goes on a rant about it. It's actually a big stand-out moment when One invites Vicki to join him and this would go on to be a bit uncommon. Three had Liz and Jo basically assigned to him by UNIT. That's why companions were often called assistants back in the day. They were basically lab assistants. It was literally their job.
I could go on and on about this, but this thing is supposed to be about the four companions that were chosen by another companion: Jamie, Peri, Ace, and Adam.
Yes, I'm counting Adam for this, not because he completely counts as a companion, but because he was invited to be one and basically failed his test run.
Here There Be Spoilers for the episodes these companions debuted in and probably more.
It's funny how the four examples here are split down the middle. The blondes, Polly and Rose, chose companions to come with them, while the gingers, Turlough and Mel, chose companions to replace them. It also splits down the middle in that Jamie and Ace became the definitive companions of their Doctors, while Peri and Adam didn't work well with the Doctors the joined, with Peri not having much time with 5 before constantly bickering with 6, and Adam just failing completely.
I think some of the reason for this seems to be based on the mindset of the companions that picked the companions. Polly and Mel were mainly thinking of the new companion when they chose them. Polly realized that Jamie was in a rough part of history and maybe it would be nice to take him out of it. Mel spent a while bonding with Ace and realized that she could use a Space Dad.
Rose wasn't really thinking when she invited Adam along. She basically did it because she thought he was cute. 9 was never into it, just humoring her, and then they both sort of ditched him on his first trip to the far future. Look, Adam made his own bad decisions and shouldn't have been a companion, but he also shouldn't have been left completely unsupervised in an unfamiliar time period. He got that stupid computer thing in his head because it was basically required to do anything around there, and then decided to be stupid with it.
Meanwhile, Turlough was thinking of the Doctor. 5 didn't handle Tegan's departure well and admitted to being depressed. When he realized he was going to have to leave, Turlough was aware that the Doctor shouldn't be left alone while already feeling depressed and abandoned. So, he assigned Peri as a replacement.
The actual scene where Peri becomes a companion has 5 clearly reluctant. Either he's decided that he wants to be alone or he's just not that interested in her specifically. Turlough telling Peri to keep an on him probably factored in to him accepting her. Strangely, like with Adam, the Doctor took on a new companion whom he didn't like to humor another companion. The difference was that Turlough chose a better companion than Rose did, so Peri stuck around and the Doctor warmed up to her. That also connects to motivation. The reason Adam was the only truly bad choice is that it was made for stupid reasons. Polly and Mel were thinking "the Doctor would be good for this person". Turlough was thinking "this person would be good for the Doctor". Rose just didn't think.
This isn't me bashing Rose, by the way. Everyone's allowed to make bad choices. But, I admit, comparing her to three random classic companions in this situation doesn't make her look good. Rose was a good companion for 9. Her relationship with 10, no matter how much one might enjoy it, might not have been the most emotionally healthy for them. But, she still was a good companion for the most part. She just doesn't have very good judgement when it comes to who makes a good companion.
Also I did sort of accidentally parallel 9/Rose and 5/Turlough. I did not actually mean to do that.

cris watches dr. who: s01e06 - "Dalek"
Tumblr media
"E-le-vate!"
They're in 2012! It's funny how when the episode aired that was ever-so-slightly into the future and now it's ever-so-slightly into the past. 2012 wasn't so different from 2005: there were fewer LiveJournals and more Lady Gaga, maybe
Sometimes, I'm a little sad that I haven't seen the old episodes of Dr. Who, because I'm betting Van Statten's alien artifact bunker is filled with all sorts of callbacks that I don't understand
A Dalek! Even I know of Daleks!
Huh. I never realized it was Da-lek, not Da-lek
Hoo-boy the Doctor v. much does not like Daleks. Normally he's sassy but all in favour of a peaceful solution, but this odd li'l appliance robot makes him absolutely froth with rage
Aw, Emo!Dalek
So the Time War was a mutually destructive conflict between the Time Lords and the Daleks? Something tells me these two last vestiges of their races won't end up in an unlikely friendship
Stop torturing the murder robot, you goons
Stop touching the murder robot, Rose, you goon
I love how the Dalek is so obviously a relic from seventies sci-fi design - the way it looks, the shrill electric way it talks, the weird bumper tires - but he still feels menacing when he advances through the army base
I know I'm not supposed to be on the side of the depressed toaster oven, but I still kind of cheered when the Dalek managed to overcome the previously insurmountable object of the staircase
Once again, Rose's empathy is instrumental in saving the day
Alas, poor Dalek; alas, poor Doctor
8 out of 8 Tardes. New depth and history for the Doctor; absolutely chuffed with an episode that makes you feel both afraid of and sorry for a washer/drier-combination from the seventies. Also, Adam, so new character dynamics within the Tardis next episode! Kudos!

Ultimate Doctor Who Poll Round 1 - Matchup 17
Episode Summaries under the cut
Tumblr media
105: The Christmas Invasion - Season 1 Christmas Special: After the Doctor's regeneration, he brings Rose home to her family for Christmas, but collapses. Rose struggles with his new face, not sure if he's even the same person anymore. Prime Minister Harriet Jones deals with contact of an approaching alien spaceship, which has captured an Earth space probe. The probe contained a sample of A positive blood, through which they are able to control everybody on Earth with that blood type. They make them all walk to the top of the nearest roof and stand at the edge. The aliens demand that either half the world will be sold into slavery, or the 1/3 of the population with A positive blood will die.
Still unconscious, Rose and Mickey bring the Doctor to the TARDIS as it's the only place that's safe. Detecting advanced technology, the aliens teleport the ship aboard, along with Harriet Jones and some of her colleagues. They attempt to negotiate with the aliens, but several people are killed. Finally, the Doctor wakes up and exits the TARDIS, still feeling out his new form. He challenges the alien leader to a duel for the fate of the Earth, and they engage in a sword fight. The alien cuts off the Doctor's hand, but his recent regeneration allows him to regrow it, win the fight, and force the aliens surrender.
The aliens flee, but Harriet Jones orders the firing of a weapon they'd prepared as a worst case scenario. The alien ship is destroyed, angering the Doctor, who threatens to bring down Harriet's administration, spreading rumors that she is too ill to continue. Although both are nervous because of his change, the Doctor asks Rose to keep traveling with him.

152: The Long Game - Season 1, Episode 8: The Doctor takes Rose and new companion Adam to the future, on a space station in the year 200,000. Adam deals with culture shock from the future, but the Doctor notes that history seems to be off course, and that the culture, technology, and lack of non-human species aboard are signs that something has gone wrong with history.
They meet a journalist and sit on a news brief, where several reporters beam information directly into her head to broadcast out. An unknown person watches on a monitor and detects a glitch from one reporter. An alert interrupts the news session and announces that the reporter has been promoted to Floor 500. The journalist is jealous of this as supposedly the walls of Floor 500 are made of gold. The reporter travels up to Floor 500, where she is found to be a freedom fighter using a false identity, and is killed.
Adam leaves to go to an observation deck to get his bearings, while the Doctor and Rose continue to investigate. They find that Floor 500 is pumping enormous amounts of heat down to the rest of the space station, and get the journalist to begin questioning whether what she's been told is true, why nobody comes back from floor 500, why there are no aliens aboard, and why there it is so hot on board.
Adam meanwhile discovers a computer terminal and attempts to gain access to Earth's history, and leave a message on his mom's voicemail in the past, but is denied access as he does not have a brain chip. He goes to the ships medical center, where they are able to install the chip, a hole in his forehead that will allow his brain to interface with the computer.
The Doctor and Rose gain access to Floor 500 and go up, where they meet the Editor, who works for a creature called the Jagrafess. The Jagrafess runs the entire human empire, controlling it through selective information in the news feed broadcast. It also generates an enormous amount of heat, which is pumped down to the rest of the station to keep the Jagrafess alive. The Editor wonders at how he doesn't know the Doctor and Rose, as he has access to all the information in the empire, but has no record of them at all.
At that moment, Adam accesses a computer through his brain spike, giving the Editor access to all of his knowledge, including about the Doctor and Rose, as well as the TARDIS, including Adam's key. He plans to take the TARDIS to control humanity even earlier in it's history. The journalist had followed the Doctor and Rose up and overhears all of this, and accesses a terminal to revert the heating, and pump it back up, killing the Jagrafess and Editor and allowing the Doctor and Rose to escape.
The Doctor says that history has been set right now, and he takes Rose and Adam away in the TARDIS. He brings Adam back home, kicking him out of the TARDIS for attempting to bring back information from the future for personal benefit, and erases the voicemails he left his mother. He leaves with Rose, telling Adam to live a quiet life so that nobody sees his brain chip.

cris watches dr. who: s01e07 - "The Long Game"
Tumblr media
"The thing is, Adam, time travel is like visiting Paris. You can't just read the guide book. You've got to throw yourself in, eat the food, use the wrong verbs, get charged double and end up kissing complete strangers - or is that just me? Stop asking questions. Go and do it!"
Already worried for Adam. He's not going to make it to the end of the episode, is he?
A Bad Wolf reference on the radio! Drink! And they mention the Face of Boe, so make it a shot!
The Face of Boe is pregnant! What, is he going to birth another luck dragon?
Why are the haircuts of future human societies always so terribly bad? All these people look like they're in 90's music videos
The Doctor is oddly supportive of Rose and Adam's date. Maybe he's poly for everyone except Mickey?
Hey, it's that guy! Shaun, from Shaun of the Dead!
"Being human doesn't pay well." Fuck, that's a little too real
Oh, Adam. V. disappointed in you
Also v disappointed in your lack of imagination. All the information of the world at your disposal and you use it to do some glorified insider trading
So the villain is Rupert Murdoch disguised as a blob with teeth? Fair cop really
So, one of Rose's strengths is her wonder? The curiosity that lets her embark on all these adventures without immediately thinking of her own profit. Good going, girl
See, I thought that little dog would have destroyed the answering machine with Adam's Answer To Everything On It, but instead the Doctor just kind of knows Adam did what did? Hm
That... is not the way I thought Adam would not make it to the end of the episode
6 out of 8 Tardes. Adam's an eejit

60 Years of Doctor Who Anniversary Marathon - C. Baker 7th Review
Prisoners of Time: Endgame - Comic
Tumblr media
Prisoners of Time was a year long spanning 50th anniversary special.
Over the course of twelve issues, each doctor got to participate in a mini-adventure that highlighted their era. Only for their companions to be kidnapped at the end of each story by a mysterious entity.
Endgame is the conclusion of that story arc, bringing all then eleven Doctors and their friends together to defeat the Master and Adam.
Tumblr media
Yup the former 9th Doctor's companion has turned full on villain, and honestly who could blame him? The treatment of Adam was one of the very few low points of the Eccleston era, and this story arc seeks to rectify that and give the character closure.
It works really well for what it is and is the main draw of the graphic novel, but we're here for the Sixth Doctor not the Ninth.
Tumblr media
The Sixth Doctor is traveling around with Peri and Frobisher during his portion of the comic.
Frobisher is from the Sixth Doctor's original comic run and has proven so popular that he's managed to crossover into other spin-offs.
He's a shapeshifting alien bounty hunter who was once contracted to kidnap the Doctor but then decided to join him on his travels instead.
Frobisher usually prefers to inhabit the body of a penguin though can turn himself into anyone or anything, living or non-living. He winds up being the key player in helping to defeat Adam.
Tumblr media
Being forwarned by the Tenth Doctor, Frobisher takes Peri's place and allows himself to be taken instead. He then proceeds to sneak around Adam's hidden fortress and dismantle the systems from within, freeing everyone.
Tumblr media
I'll admit, I'm kind of getting 'multi-doctor' fatigue as we reach the middle of the marathon. There's only five such episodes in the series proper but the spin-offs are a whole other ball game apparently.
However as far as multi-doctor stories go, Prisoners of Time is one of the better ones. There's plenty of fan service (we even get a brief Ben cameo) and an emotional core to the story that builds off of the plot lines laid out in the main show.
It's certainly better then The Two Doctors, that's for sure.
