Israel - Day 5
It was another absolutely jam-packed day here in Israel, with our tour guide John keeping us busy from 7:30am until 9:30pm and that’s not including the optional 5am sunrise hike that some of the group did this morning... They should re-name the trip from the Adventure Tour to the No Rest No Sleep Tour! As I write this blog in bed at 11:30pm, knowing I have a 7am start again tomorrow... My tired body knows that future Kimberly will be glad I wrote down everything that happened today, as it’s so easy to forget it all. A lot happens in one day!
We started our day in Masada where we had stayed the night before. Some opted for the 5am sunrise hike up the snake path, which I did not do, unsurprisingly. Instead, we took the cable car up the cable car up the 300m cliff-face to see the old city on the hill. The old city was very large and had a palace for King Herod, surprise surprise. This guy seems to have built a lot of fancy things here in Israel around the time of Jesus! There is an incredible story about this place when Romans came to invade it and the 1,000 Jewish people inside killed themselves because it would’ve be been better than to suffer at their enemies hands. It’s a long story! But because of that history, Masada is super important to the Jews. So much so that as part of their army training, Israeli’s come up the snake path in full gear! Now that would be a workout!
Masada was amazing. Cliffs on literally every side, only one very steep and narrow path to get up the hill, yet that's what people did back in the day. There’s also incredible storage for food and water up there, which is crazy because it’s literally at the top of a mountain in the desert with cliffs on each side... Wow... The scenery around Masada was stunning, reminded me a lot of the Grand Canyon and the Nevada/Utah area in the USA. Similar to yesterday’s scenery in Qumran, as it’s all the same area.
After our time melting in the insanely hot desert heat (who decided it would be a good idea to come to the Middle East in the middle of their Summer?!) we went to En Geti. En Geti was so incredible. I feel like every day there’s a new place I visit that I say is stunning and beautiful and breath-taking and blah blah blah... Well, sorry but En Geti gets all the words too! En Geti is a natural spring with waterfalls and creeks, but it’s in the middle of the desert! Whaaaaaat?!
The Israel desert is a tough place to be. It is hot and dry and barren. I would definitely complain with the Israelites if I had to walk around the desert for 40 years! But then, almost out of nowhere, appears a line of trees and greenery. Follow the greenery and you end up at the waterfalls of En Geti. Wow! Since it’s a natural spring, the water is cold, like, actual, real, cold water! Now that’s a first for our Israel trip!
The first waterfall we stopped at was so cool because you could stand under it and get absolutely soaked, which was much needed! Then we walked to another waterfall and by golly, it was STUNNING! Look I even used capital letters to describe it! Although unless you’ve spent a few days walking in the desert and seeing all the scenery nearby, I don’t think you could quite understand the significance of En Geti. The second waterfall area we saw literally looked like what I imagine parts of Heaven to be like. Or maybe the Earth in it’s original form as God intended it.
Picture a desert with big orange cliffs and caves, then picture an oasis of green covering one of the outcrops, with a large waterfall coming down from way up high. The water pools at the bottom and there’s rocks to sit on and more greenery in the canopy. Birds fly overhead and if you turn around you can see amazing views of the desert out to the Dead Sea... If I was Herod, this is where I would’ve built my palace and then never left! We read about En Geti in 1 Samuel 24 as it is where David and his men are hiding from King Saul in a cave, and David has the opportunity to kill Saul but doesn’t. Pretty cool!
After cooling off in the waterfall, we hoped back on the bus for a 1hr drive to Jerusalem, and for the first time since arriving in the Middle East, I had time to listen to some music! Yay! Happy Kimberly! Particularly as yesterday I had realised I was really missing my music. So that was nice. But I did reeeeeally need to pee on our way and so as soon as we arrived at our next spot I leapt off the bus and ran to the toilet, which everyone thought was hilarious for some reason. I was busting!
Just before arriving in Jerusalem, we heard Psalm 122 read in Hebrew and English which was nice to hear as we entered the city. Our first stop was the Mount of Olives, where we visited a little chapel and heard Psalm 125 as well as sung Amazing Grace. We then walked down the hill slightly to the Garden of Gethsemane. John read Scripture, showed us a map and we had a time of prayer and reflection. All the while we have a stunning view of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. Wow. It was a real “pinch me” moment to be sitting there, looking out at Jerusalem, thinking about everything that happened here... Hard to process...
After we checked into our accomodation, John took us on a 3hr outing to the old city for dinner and then to the Western Wall, or as I know it, the Wailing Wall. The Western Wall is the most important and holy site for Jews, as it is the closest remnant of the Temple they have. Jews come here to pray for peace in Jerusalem, based on Psalm 122:6-7. It was amazing to see so many people there, even at 8:30pm!
I didn’t know we were going there tonight and I didn’t have any paper on me, so sadly I couldn’t put my written prayer in the wall like I would’ve liked to... But it was still amazing to see the wall and think about all the millions and millions of people who have come here over the years and prayed. Most people were praying really passionately too and weeping. It made me feel like I had a weak faith or wasn’t taking it seriously enough maybe.
It’s also interesting to me that most of Israel is Jewish, not Christian. Only a tiny percentage is Christian, yet we’re in the land where Jesus lived! How can that be? So all the passionate Jewish people praying at the Western Wall... They don’t believe Jesus is the Messiah... That blows my mind...
There was lots of information we learnt about Jerusalem and the Temple Mount today, but I am waaaaaaay too tired to try and explain it all now. I’m sure I’ll learn more and can explain in another post... Right now, it’s bedtime!
