#Repost @395north ・・・ Just soaking in the solitude.
Huge snowflakes and the peaceful trickle of 100 degree water makes for the perfect location to reflect on myself and the new year. But I’ll be honest, after about an hour this became just a little bit lonely…. and my ears were forming icicles. Maybe it’s time to start hanging out with humans again.

Mount Whitney is usually just a jagged silhouette glimpsed from the highway as people hurry to other destinations. Sometimes folks take a moment to absorb the beauty of the Eastern Sierra and snap a photo of Mt Whitney while camping at Alabama Hills. But for those who submit, peak bag, or slowly amble up the mountain, a whole new world presents itself. Who knew the back side of those jagged peaks would reveal gently sloping talus fields, sparkling emerald jewels, and endless majestic views. Mt Whitney is so much more that just a silhouette or a peak to check off a list. For many it’s the first step towards a healthy new addiction and a gateway to so many more adventures. ••• Mount Whitney, Lone Pine, Ca P.S. half of the people I hear pointing out Mt Whitney are actually pointing to Lone Pine peak. #mtwhitney #mountwhitney #adventurebeckons #395north #easterncalifornia #sierranevada (at Mount Whitney) https://www.instagram.com/p/CADoa-8B8Hk/?igshid=1qfu785l68kqv

Then Came Spring...
“Then came Spring, the great time of traveling, and everybody in the scattered gang was getting ready to take one trip or another.” On the Road, Jack Kerouac.
Spring has sprung in Denver! The dogwoods and the cherry blossoms are a’bloom, the sun is shining hot, and lots of people are out riding bikes and jogging. Biergartens are hoppin’, blessed-sundresses are back in season (as are the Rockies) and both Lodo and Hostel Fish have seen dramatic increases in energy. Indeed, as the snow recedes from the high peaks, winter seems but a dream, here in the city
Spring certainly is the great time of traveling. With longer days and warmer temperatures, you feel the urge to shake off that winter lethargy and spread your wings. In whatever capacity it can get away with, Adventure beckons, the mountains call, and we all find ourselves planning one trip or another. Brad and Tara have already crashed the London and Berlin party; Andrew enjoyed a month-long sojourn of the American West with his two best friends from Switzerland; Derek went on his annual Asian motorcycle trip (this time to Taiwan); Paxton went to Wisconsin and ate a lot of cheese; and I, myself, am planning a European backpacking tour with my two little brothers. Eight countries, one full month…oh to shatter the current world-views of little brothers and introduce The World…
Yes, Spring-time is the time to get on the road and manifest those dreams that society loves to squash; to silence that not-so-soft voice that screams “it’s too expensive,” or “I can’t find the time,” or “one of these days.” Traveling is so much easier to make happen (and fulfilling) than people want to allow themselves to think.
If the fix for your Spring time travel-bug happens to find you here at one of the crossroads of the world, Hostel Fish, either as a guest in the hostel or a patron at the bar, rest assured we’ll do all we can to water those seeds that are your future travel dreams. ;)
Travel far, travel wide,
Cheers.

There is a fire burning in each of us to do something more with our existence. I've a desire to do more than just "live" out each day. Clocking in... clocking out... I have my health while others do not. I aim to live. I aim to do what others may not have the opportunity to do for whatever their circumstances may be. I also aim to give those impacted by #breastcancer a voice along the way. While they fight to live, I will provide them an opportunity to be heard. @Regrann from @bfgoodrichtires - In Moab, every route is the scenic route. From intense rock crawling to relaxing trail drives to bonding with the Jeeping community, @395North is making himself right at home at #EJS2017. ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ I'm looking forward to a relaxing trail drive after an intense day of crawling my Jeep around Area BFE with the @bfgoodrichtires crew The guides were patient, knowledgeable, and just plain awesome. I've come to learn that the 4 wheeling industry and the Jeeping community is a super tight knit group of folks that really support and care about everyone they wheel with. I didn't meet a single person that wasn't just plain cool. Thanks Jeepers and Wheelers! You made me feel at home in Moab. #driverenough #adventurebeckons #ejs2017 - #regrann

Saying Lemmy is a gift would be a horrible understatement. By now you have probably seen the good natured pup I’ve been taking care of for a few months. He has become a loveable subject of my stories and some of you have even recognized him while hiking or running errands. He is insta famous! But Lemmy has been more than just an adventure buddy. He has been a source of comfort, companionship, love and stability in my chaotic life. Someone to put ahead of myself and influence good decisions while on the road. Although our pairing happened thru unfortunate circumstances, Lemmy was perfect timing for me in so many ways. I owe Lemmy (and his owner Goose) a big hug and thank you for this. P.S. Lemmy was a rescue. Don’t buy, help one of these neglected souls. #savearescue #animalrescue #rescuedog #rescuepit #pitmix #lemmy #adventurebeckons #lemmy (at Kern River Brewing Company) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9VXp3ChF3T/?igshid=tevsxuwtp5tf

Prolly the Most Important Thing To Do While Planning a Trip
One of the most imperative parts of planning a trip is to make sure that you’re on the same page as your travel partner(s). Be crystal clear of your respective expectations of how the trip will unfold!!! Several years ago, I had plans for a pseudo-high-school-friend of mine and I to meet up with one of my other buddies in London, then embark on a month-long backpacking sojourn through Europe. We agreed that we would camp out, stay in hostels, use the train system to get around, and that we may even try some hitchhiking. We bottom lined it that we would try to maximize what we saw, and minimize what we spent…all seemed in line. It turned out, however, that Will had a very different idea of how the trip would unfold than Andrew or I did.
I’d met Andrew on Craigslist Rideshare the year before and kept in touch. I picked him up in Seattle with the expectation that he’d split gas with me all the way through British Columbia and The Yukon, and into Alaska. We jived for 3,000 miles, digging Dylan and The Stones and talking about grandiose adventures. Andrew had read On the Road, dropped out of college, and hitchhiked all around the country…he is the perfect embodiment of raw adventure. Will, on the other hand, turned out to be much more idiosyncratic and particular; he also had access to a much deeper Money Well than Andrew or I, and had the expectation of drawing from that well as much as he’d like.
I showed up to Will’s house with my big rucksack and a big grin. In-and-attached to my pack was a tent, a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, several changes of clothes, journals, etc- all of the important gear for someone who planned on leather tramping it and living out of their packs. He, alternatively, sported a school-sized backpack that contained two changes of clothes, his shaving kit, and the bible. The important part was the credit card in his pocket. Like I said, it turned out that he had access to a lot more money. He was taken aback by my pack, thinking it was overkill, but allowed it to pass. We had a one day layover in NYC, which went fine. He was interested in how much I insisted on saving money…already. I suggested splitting an overpriced cannoli, and eating a couple slices of pizza instead of a nice dinner. “But we’re in New York City, man!”
London, however, saw a very quick unraveling of things. We touched down at Heathrow as the sun was descending, and by the time we got into London-proper it was dark. It also came to be that the hostel I’d originally planned on staying at was full for the night…I admit, I should’ve booked ahead. My phone wasn’t working whatsoever, and Will apparently was inherently-incapable of following a map…and too proud to let me analyze it. We rambled around the city in circles for a couple of hours trying to make it to a district with cheap hotels, or more preferably, hostels. It was London city, and I knew there were plenty of hostels and that that was the way to go. We wrestled in passive-aggressive energy over the idea of “biting the bullet and getting a hotel room,” which would’ve cost around 200 pounds…about $350 dollars. I resisted that notion for a long time. I knew it was important for me to conserve money if I wanted to see and do everything I had in mind for the trip. The primary difference between Will and I: He didn’t have a plan and he was freaking out; I, alternatively, was in a fascinating new place that is fabled throughout history, and my adventure was coming to fruition. I wasn’t scared; he was. We eventually sprang for a taxi and told the driver to take us to a hostel. We ended up crashing at a very comfortable and reasonable hostel for 10 pounds…as opposed to a 200 pound hotel. “Score!” I thought. (Later, I learned that Will wrote some secretive, rambling post about our misadventure in which he blasted the place as extremely dirty and unspeakably grim. “Welcome to the world,” I laughed. It was all very silly.) The next morning, over a proper English breakfast, he began the conversation “I have to confess, I was getting extremely frustrated with you last night…” My response: “I reciprocate that…It was an unnecessarily frustrating situation.”
Later that day he met Andrew, which only served to alienate him further. Andrew has a powerfully-independent and unique energy, that is marked with sagacity, irreverence, and self-acceptance. He, similarly, had a large pack that was equipped with a tent, sleeping bag, and the like. Will could tell by that point that his expectations may have been severely flawed. I’m sure Andrew and I were frighteningly-foreign anomalies to his upper-class-bubble existence. That night at the hostel I’d originally planned for us to stay at, Andrew and I sipped beers with a diverse group of travelers. We met people from Germany, Austria, Belgium, America, rural England, and Australia. Will, on the other hand, spent his evening in the room, claiming he was tired…I could tell he was dubious of the other travelers. Later on, he spoke earnestly with me about how this wasn’t what he expected and that he didn’t think he could go on. He was adamant, and we both parted ways- thankfully, I think we’ll both admit. Laughably, he was worried about us, and therefore offered to put us up in a comfortable hotel for a couple of nights.
The moral of the story is:
Speak in detail with your travel partners about your respective expectations for the trip. Traveling extensively with another human being is extremely telling: It will make or break friendships, almost assuredly. Either way, it will be far less of a headache if you’ve made absolutely certain you’re all on the same page.
