Belly (1998) dir. Hype Williams Ever since they were kids, Sincere (Nas) and Buns (DMX) have lived life close to the edge, doing whatever it takes to survive. As adults, they build up their kingdom of crime on drug dealing and robbery. But Sincere grows weary of the criminal lifestyle and joins a black Muslim religious group. Buns, on the other hand, sinks deeper into criminality and faces serious prison time. The cops offer him a deal, however -- assassinate the head of the Muslim group, and he will go free.

Kirikou and the Sorceress (1998) dir. Michel Ocelot The tiny Kirikou is born into an African village upon which a sorceress called Karaba has cast a terrible spell: the spring has dried up, the villagers are being blackmailed, the men of the village have either been kidnapped or have mysteriously disappeared. He wants to rid the village of the curse so he goes on a voyage to the Forbidden Mountain, where the Wise Man of the Mountain, who knows of Karaba and her secrets, awaits him.

Bebe's Kids (1992) dir. Bruce W. Smith In this animated depiction of a calamitous first date, Robin Harris (Faizon Love) hits it off with the gorgeous Jamika (Vanessa Bell Calloway), whom he meets at her boss' funeral. On the ride back, Harris is introduced to her well-behaved son (Wayne Collins), and asked if he wants to go with them to the amusement park the next day. Harris accepts and arrives to find three more children joining them. Jamika is watching her friend Bebe's kids -- which is the beginning of Harris' problems.

Yeelen (1987) dir. Souleymane Cissé

In the 13th century, Niankoro (Issiaka Kane) is born to the shaman Soma (Niamanto Sanogo), who fears his offspring's magical powers. Niankoro flees with his mother (Soumba Traore) and masters his skills while staying ahead of his father's attempts to track him down. Setting off on a journey to ask his uncle, Djigui Diarra (Ismaila Sarr), for advice, Niankoro uses his abilities to help tribal king Rouma Boll (Balla Moussa Keita) defeat a neighboring tribe, thereby earning the king's friendship.

It's Black History Month! And today we're showcasing two items from our Script Ephemera Collection!

The Script Ephemera Collection contains scripts that were considered for Best Screenplay in 2000. It also includes a variety of publicity kits sent to out to theaters and the press in order to spread the word about the film. Let's look at two of these publicity kits.

Booty Call: This is a 1997 comedy directed by Jeff Pollack. This movie is about Rushon (Tommy Davidson) who has been dating Nikki (Tamala Jones). When Rushon asks Nikki to dinner, she invites her friend Lysterine (Vivica A. Fox), and to forge a double date, Rushon gets his friend Bunz (Jamie Foxx) to join them. The two parties hit it up, and want to take both of their relationships to the next level, however, neither want to do that without "protection", and so starts the search.

The film got two thumbs up from film critics Siskel and Ebert, who praised it for it's vulgar humor.

Soul Food: Also a 1997 film, this comedy-drama was written and directed by George Tillman Jr. Tillman based the family featured in the film on his own family, and was also written to show a more positive image of African-Americans than was typically seen in Hollywood films. There is talk now of a sequel being made, with Tillman as writer.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, Soul Food's synopsis is as follows: "when Ahmad Simmons' (Brandon Hammond) diabetic grandmother, Josephine "Big Mama" Joseph (Irma P. Hall), falls into a coma during an operation to amputate her leg, it throws the Joseph family into chaos. Ahmad watches as his mother, Maxine (Vivica A. Fox), and aunts Teri (Vanessa L. The film holds an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, and film critic Roger Ebert gave it 3.5 out of 4 stars. The film won Acapulco Black Film Festival's Best Film Award in 1998, the Outstanding Motion Picture Award from NAACP Image Awards in 1998, and a Grammy for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture ("A Song for Mama") also in 1998. Not to mention several nominations and awards for the actors and actresses starring in the film as well.

Both movies feature prominent actors in the Black community: Jamie Foxx, Nia Long, Tamala Jones, and Vivica A. Fox, who stars in both movies.

Black films are a significant part of our culture, and here at the University of Iowa's Special Collection & Archives, we are working to collect more of this piece of history for our students and faculty to study. More can be found in our Black Film and Television Collection which contains scripts, lobby cards, posters, and other ephemeral works from the silent age, race films of the 1930s through the 1950s, Blaxploitation films of the 1970s, and films from the 1990s and 2000s.

FRINGE REVIEW: Bimbos in Space!

Captain Shadowban and her rebel crew of degenerate space bimbos must save the galaxy from evil! Inspired by B movies and exploitation film of the 1960s, the audience straps on (in...I mean, in) board the SS Slutbucket and SS Virago and hyper-drive themselves to encounter space westerners, dommes, an immortal tampon deity and Elon Musk’s cryogenically frozen head to negotiate the true meaning of justice in an increasingly polarized galaxy.

As much as this show is about bimbos and what that looks like to different groups of people, it is truly a fascinating piece of absurdist, feminist theatre. The folks at Femmepire have neglected nothing in terms of set, props, digital media and some truly immersive sound and lighting design. The story (a true labour of love and justice by Claud Spadafora) seems a bit much at times. It crams in as many social and political references and internet slang/turns of phrase as it can but we can ultimately forgive the wordiness when you’re having that much fun watching the space saga unfold. 

The characters are a mixed bag of hilarity. The domme who uses fear for good. The captain who is empty-headed...on purpose. The HR personnel who is all rules and regulations, horny for accountability. The delightfully queer communications officer who is a descendant of William Shakespeare. The technician who suffers from the sweetest struggle with low self-esteem and of course, our fearless leader who is no nonsense and may, quite literally, eat the rich. They are performed well, with only a few noticeable hiccups in line delivery due to sound cues overpowering them. There’s still some nervous energy too but it adds to the overall charm of the piece.

The audiences have been enormous since opening night, and thankfully the venue has released even more seats for our eager space cadet audience to see the bimbos fight for justice (and good hair). There was so much infectious laughter, cheering and hooting throughout that it’s easy to understand why this show is so popular and comes so highly recommended. 

Bimbos in Space not going to be for everyone but those that love this show are going to love it intensely. There is so much to take in, I would suggest this company films a version of it to better capture the hilarious absurdity that this show has in spades. Also, let there be a sequel. I need more adventures with these bimbos. This is a very strong contender for one of the weirdest and wonderful shows this year at Fringe. Engage besties!

Hi! Just curious, do you know whether any Alonzos have played Macavity?

Hopefully I understand your question correctly.

As a casted role, none that I am aware of. Typically, it is/was Alonzo/Rumpus Cat as it is Admetus or Plato/Macavity(/and sometimes Rumpus Cat). As well, Alonzo is usually featured in the Macavity fight, so I cannot think of any production that had him doubled as Macavity.

There have been split tracks where an Alonzo performer covered Macavity for a show or two, for instance Tom Broderick in Cast 5 of the Oasis of the Seas.

These are very uncommon occurences, relying more on necessity to keep the show going if the usual Plato/Admetus performer was out of the show for whatever reason.

If you are asking if an Alonzo performer has also a some point been a Macavity performer (and by extension Admetus/Plato), then yes, there are several performers who have played both. Tom Broderick above being an example, as he also in Cast 6 as a replacement Plato.

The person comes to mind first for me is Bradley Andrew Delarosbel, who is playing Alonzo/Rumpus Cat in the upcoming Korea Tour, and who played Admetus/Macavity in the 2018 cast of UK Tour 2016 and also the Taiwan leg of Asia Tour 2020 earlier this year.

There are of course many Alonzo performers who also covered Plato/Admetus and would play Macavity when covering. For example, Ahmad Simmons in the 2016 Broadway Revival.

Ahmad Simmons, who originated the role of Worker #4 on Broadway, named his character Dwayne. He headcanoned that both the chorus member and the worker were the same person, and Ahmad felt Dwayne was lured down to Hadestown just like Eurydice was. Having seen Hades descending with Persephone in Way Down Hadestown, Dwayne was intrigued by the promise of riches and left for a better life around the timeframe of A Gathering Storm.
