In 2021 the limited series on the career of designer Halston (Roy Halston Frowick, portrayed by Ewan McGregor) waltzed down Netflix's catwalk. Now we have at least three series chronicling the lives and careers of designers.

Currently on Disney+ in Europe is the exquisite CRISTÓBAL BALENCIAGA centering on, guess who? Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga, starring Alberto San Juan (Reyes De La Noche) as Balenciaga.

It's an interesting story about this enigmatic fashion genius that shows his steadfastness in his devotion to fashion to the sacrifice, some may say, of ethics due to the fact that while other fashion houses were shut down during Germany's occupation of some parts of France, he readily made clothes for the significant others of German soldiers.

The series also shines a light on Balenciaga's relationship with his creative partner and love-of-his-life Wladzio d'Attainville (played by Thomas Coumans).

Among the designers who appear or are name-checked in CRISTÓBAL BALENCIAGA is Christian Dior and Coco Chanel. These two fashion legends will appear in AppleTV+'s upcoming mini-series THE NEW LOOK with Ben Mendelsohn as Dior and Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel and takes place during Germany's occupation of France.

THE NEW LOOK will feature covers of classics by Florence + and The Machine, Lana del Rey, The 1975, Perfume Genius and more.

Sometimes this year (at least I hope this year) will be KAISER KARL (apparently the title may be changed) starring Daniel Brühl as Kunty Karl Lagerfeld

centering on him as a 38-year old trying to break into the Parisian world of high fashion where he finds himself in competition with he finds himself in competition with French fashion giants like Yves Saint Laurent.

The only Yves Saint Laurent depiction worth a damn. RIP beautiful Gaspard Ulliel

What is fashion if there's no one to wear it? For example, the high society ladies that will be depicted in the upcoming installment of FX's FEUD: CAPOTE VS. THE SWANS.

Hopefully this series will do justice to the mythos behind writer Truman Capote's nuclear fall out with the so-called Swans - a moniker Capote gave the socialites whose company he kept and whose secrets he didn't.

30 Covers, 30 Days 2023: Day 1

Happy November! Let's start out 30 Covers, 30 Days strong with Kuberia: The Alluring Abyss by Arpan Mondal, a Science Fiction novel full of intrigue! This novel cover was designed by the amazing returning artist, Alberto Rigau!

(For those of you who don’t know, 30C30D stands for 30 Covers, 30 Days in which 17 Wrimos and 5 YWP Participants get the chance to win a professionally designed cover! The rest of the days are being filled by community features. We’ll be posting a cover a day throughout November, so make sure to check them out!)

Kuberia: The Alluring Abyss

As a deadly gamma-ray burst threatens Earth, scientists propose evacuating a chosen group to the newly discovered planet Kuberia, named after the Hindu God of wealth, Kubera. This world seems perfect for humans, but a single question remains—Why is it devoid of inhabitants?

Upon arrival, the human pioneers are struck by the planet's strange beauty. Purple and red flora blankets the landscape, some vegetation seems to have a reddish brown glow in the darkness, and everything has a captivating, twisting shape. However, they soon realize this very allure is what keeps Kuberia empty of life.

About the Author

I'm Arpan, an aerospace engineer who absolutely loves everything about space. A few years back, I got hooked on science fiction books, and that's when I decided to start writing my own stories. My sci-fi stories are a way to share my knowledge about space and the universe with the world. 'Kuberia: The Alluring Abyss' is my first attempt at turning one of my story ideas into a complete novel!

About the Designer

With over 18 years in practice, Alberto Rigau crafts and conceptualizes brands, exhibits, way-finding systems, publications, books, photographic projects, and environmental graphics. As a former Co-Chair of AIGA’s Design Educators Steering Committee, he collaborates with nationwide design educators in developing content and programming to further academic research, teaching practices, and conversations within the field. Alberto has a Master’s Degree from NC State University's College of Design and currently engages the field from his home studio in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

I instantly decided that I did not want to give a visual voice to Kuberia. Now knowing anything about it is part of the mystery that drew me to the summary. I focused on the physical interrelation between these planetary bodies as main actors who are sparking the narrative and reality of this particular story.

I was watching I Love Lucy on Pluto TV last night and it completely slipped my mind that yesterday marked Desi Arnaz’s 106th birthday.

His was a classic Riches-to-Rags, Rags-to-Riches Cinderella tale. Desiderio Alberto ‘Desi’ Arnaz y de Acha III was born 2 March 1917 in Santiago de Cuba, Oriente Province, Cuba, the only son of wealthy landowner Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Alberni II (a prominent Cuban politician, who, to date, was the youngest mayor of Santiago de Cuba from 1923 to 1932) and his wife, Dolores ‘Lolita’ de Acha y de Socías (one of the most beautiful women in the Caribbean, the daughter of a businessman, one of three founders of Bacardi Rum Limited, the world's largest privately-owned spirits company). Desi was of the small but vastly privileged, upper-class y de Acha, the descendent of Cuban nobility of whose colonial ancestors originated from Santander, Provincia de Cantabria, Cantabria, Spain. (His grandfather, Dr Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y Alberni I, was assigned to the first United States volunteer cavalry in Cuba, the ‘Rough Riders’ under the leadership of ‘Hero of Cuba’ Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish-American War on 1 July 1898. To legend, they sieged San Juan Hill on horseback, and though the forged conquest did not belong primarily to Roosevelt, for the conflict was an integrated effort between the white volunteer regiment and the 1,250 black Buffalo Soldiers, the famed battle gained Cuba her independence from Spain—a victory for the people, the Cuban people).

At the height of the Cuban Revolution of 1933, Desi and his family were forced to flee their Motherland, leaving their riches behind. Following a brief election, the government collapsed with the removal of President Gerardo Machado y Morales from office in August of 1933. The opposing anarchists seized all political leaders and stripped them of their power. Among them, Desi’s father, imprisoned by the regime, before his brother-in-law, Alberto de Acha, intervened on his behalf, thus making his escape to Miami, where he was to remain in exile. Having lost their holdings to the rebels who confiscated their property (their palatial home, a cattle ranch, two dairy farms, and a vacation villa on a private island in Santiago Bay), his father sent for Desi and his mother, who took refuge in Key West, Monroe, Florida in 1934. When Desi washed upon the shores of the Americas, his father had established an import-export company, where the family of three took up frugal lodgings in the company warehouse and dined on cans of cold beans. Desi came to live in New York City and Los Angeles for about one year, where he tightened his belt for survival and scrambled for employment as a struggling musician. Following an engagement as a guitar player for a Latin-American band at the Roney Plaza Hotel in Miami Beach, and a cursory stint with the Xavier Cugat Orchestra in 1937, he made his Broadway debut in the Rodgers and Hart musical Too Many Girls, where he reprised the role for RKO's major motion picture of the same name in 1940. During the course of filming, he fell head-over-heels for the Apricot Queen, Lucille Désirée Ball. The couple eloped on 30 November 1940 in Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut. By 1949, at the age of thirty-two, Desi established himself a renowned nightclub entertainer as conga-playing band leader for the travelling self-titled Cuban orchestra.

Most Hollywood buffs would do well to remember the Power Couple formed by Desilu Productions—a celluloid empire built on the backs of Lucy and Desi’s American Dreams, despite the public scandals and tumultuous marital woes. But at the crowning glory of their golden existence, there are those who neglect Desi's legacy and his reluctant resignation to his fate as the Man Behind the Curtain, to remain in Lucy’s shadow so long as he lived. Lucy, of whose celebrity distinction was of higher standing than her husband’s. Desi, though undoubtedly talented, who was not exempt from the unjust ostracization and societal prejudice that plagued him as a Cuban Spaniard immigrant in racially-charged Hollywood. For those who clutched their pearls at the prospect of Middle American households who might've dismissed acceptance of the world’s first interracial couple on television, Lucy and Desi defied those expectations and dissolved racial barriers in an era dominated by cultural strife. Audiences of all races, colour, and creed came together to shower the Ricardos with adoration and praise, because they came to understand the Ricardos epitomized the human experience, no matter that they didn't reflect the typical post-war domestic demographic. Against all odds, the world fell in love with the All-American Ricardos… white, Hispanic, or otherwise. Lucy and Desi, to be envied by all... America's Sweethearts.

On his 106th birthday, we remember Desi for the pioneer he was, as the Mastermind behind the nation’s most Beloved Redhead.

Behind every great woman lies a greater man.

Perhaps Desi speaks for us all when he declared his everlasting love, in his own words... ‘I Love Lucy was never just a title.’

Lunedì 22 Gennaio 2024 alle ore 20.30 il GdL "Chiave di Lettura", presso i locali della Biblioteca San Valentino, si incontrerà per discutere insieme del libro di Carmelo Samonà “Fratelli”.

"Fratelli" venne pubblicato nel 1978 e diventò subito un caso editoriale. L'autore, noto ispanista, era alla sua prima prova narrativa e le 30.000 copie della tiratura andarono immediatamente esaurite mentre critici come Giorgio Manganelli, Natalia Ginzburg, Alfredo Giuliani lo accolsero come un capolavoro.

"Vivo, ormai sono anni, in un vecchio appartamento nel cuore della città, con un fratello ammalato". In una vasta casa di una città imprecisata vivono due fratelli. È il più grande a raccontare, l'altro è affetto da disturbi che riguardano "l'attività del pensiero" che non vengono comunque mai precisati, il ricovero in ospedale, predisposto da anni, "sembra di là da venire". Il rapporto tra i due è tormentato, la comunicazione è difficile, fatta di poche parole, di molti sguardi, silenzi, contatti fisici - il fratello maggiore accudisce l'infermo, lo lava, lo veste, lo segue da una stanza all'altra del grande appartamento, semivuoto di mobili, colmo comunque di ricordi, "arnesi dall'uso incerto" che "interrompono, di tanto in tanto, la sequenza dei vuoti", residui di una intimità familiare ormai perduta.

Carmelo Samonà (1926 – 1990) è stato un ispanista e scrittore italiano. Proveniente dalla famiglia aristocratica siciliana Samonà, era figlio dell'architetto Giuseppe Samonà. Si stabilì a Roma nel 1936 e si laureò in lettere, alla Sapienza, nel 1948. Dal 1961 insegnò letteratura spagnola all'Università "La Sapienza" di Roma al Magistero, e dal 1978 a Lettere, dedicandosi in particolare a quella del Seicento. Come ispanista, si ricorda, fra le altre, l'opera La letteratura spagnola dal Cid ai Re Cattolici (con Alberto Varvaro, 1972). Nel 1973 promosse la costituzione dell’Associazione ispanisti italiani. Dal 1976 collaborò con il quotidiano la Repubblica con articoli sulla letteratura moderna spagnola e ispanoamericana. Accademico dei Lincei dal 1987, ottenne il premio Juan Carlos dell'Accademia spagnola (1984).

Viene ricordato anche come scrittore (il suo esordio nel 1978), in particolare per due romanzi di successo, pubblicati da Einaudi: “Fratelli” (prima opera, parzialmente autobiografica) e “Il custode” (1983). “Fratelli” racconta il rapporto della voce narrante con il fratello affetto da una malattia mentale (nella realtà, si tratta del rapporto di Samonà con il figlio); è stato vincitore del Premio Mondello e finalista del Premio Strega nel 1978, finalista nel 1985 al Premio Bergamo e vincitore nel 2002 del Premio Pozzale Luigi Russo. Oltre ai due romanzi, Samonà scrisse il racconto Casa Landau (Garzanti, 1990) e il testo teatrale “Ultimo seminario”.

Anita Ribeiro de Jesus, conhecida como Anita Garibaldi, nascida no ano 1821, em Morrinhos, atual Laguna (SC). Em 1935, foi obrigada a casar-se aos catorze anos, com uma pessoa com quem não tinha a menor afinidade, mas abandonou o marido.

Em 1839 conheceu Giuseppe Garibaldi, um italiano que fugia de uma sentença de morte na Itália. Anita se apaixonou, ela estava com 18 anos. Enquanto estiveram juntos, tiveram cinco filhos um deles morreu aos dois anos e outro junto com a mãe. Anita seguiu seu marido nos combates em Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Uruguai (Montevidéu) e Itália, onde presenciou a proclamação da República Romana, em 1849, mesmo ano da sua morte.

Marinheiro mercante, os conhecimentos de Garibaldi foram fundamentais para os rebeldes gaúchos e catarinenses que estavam em guerra contra o governo imperial. Este episódio passou à história como Revolução Farroupilha ou Guerra dos Farrapos.

Anita Garibaldi se uniu a Giuseppe, com ele lutou pela implantação da república do Rio Grande e tiveram seu primeiro filho. Mais tarde, iriam para o Uruguai onde combateriam o ditador argentino Juan Manuel Rosas. Em Montevidéu, se casariam e nasceriam mais três filhos do casal.

Em 1847, Anita Garibaldi vai para Itália saber se o marido poderia retornar ao país e com isso, ambos se juntam, em 1848 pela unificação italiana, tentando expulsar os austríacos da região da Lombardia. Durante a campanha, porém, Anita adoece, os austríacos saíram vitoriosos e Garibaldi não aceitou a derrota e partiu.

Anita foi junto, vestida como homem. Foi sua última viagem. As cavalgadas noturnas, a má alimentação e as noites ao relento minaram sua saúde. Ela estava grávida do quinto filho. Ao chegar à República de São Marino, ardia de febre. Em 1º de agosto, no litoral tomaram barcos para alcançar mais rápido Veneza, mas foram perseguidos por uma esquadra austríaca. Dois dias depois chegaram a uma fazenda em Mandriole, perto de Ravena, Anita não resistiu e morreu na Itália, num dia frio e com perseguidores por toda a parte, no dia 4 de agosto de 1849, junto seu filho de poucos meses ainda no ventre. O corpo da brasileira foi enterrado no cemitério da Igreja de San Alberto, em Madriole.

Em 1932, seus restos mortais ganharam um mausoléu em Roma.

Em 2012, seu nome foi inscrito no Livro dos Heróis da Pátria, em Brasília.

Por sua participação em guerras nos dois continentes, Anita Garibaldi é chamada de paladina da liberdade ou “Heroína dos dois Mundos”.

"El cuarto pasajero"

Álex de la Iglesia propone un viaje en coche con Alberto San Juan, Blanca Suárez, Ernesto Alterio y Rubén Cortada que, claro, no tarda en complicarse.

Julián (Alberto San Juan), un divorciado de 50 años, recurre a la famosa aplicación para compartir su coche con desconocidos y, en especial, con alguien que ya no lo es tanto: Lorena (Blanca Suárez), una joven que viaja a menudo a Madrid. Desde hace meses tiene un asiento fijo en su coche y últimamente también en su corazón. Julián quiere aprovechar el viaje para sincerarse con ella, pero en un error a la hora de escoger al resto de los ocupantes (Ernesto Alterio y Rubén Cortada) incluye a un pasajero (quizá el individuo más insoportable del mundo) que provocará un cambio radical en el rumbo de los acontecimientos.

Ritmo, ritmo y ritmo. Eso es lo esencial en la comedia y Álex de la Iglesia se lo sabe. No duda, por tanto, en aplicar esta lógica narrativa en una road-movie de vértigo. Tras el batacazo comercial de "Veneciafrenia" el cineasta español vuelve por sus fueros como ya hiciera en El bar o en "Perfectos desconocidos". "El cuarto pasajero" me ha parecido una comedia notable y bien guionizada.

Las películas para ser originales deben adaptarse a los nuevos usos sociales. Supongo que sabéis qué es BlaBlaCar pero si alguien anda perdido lo explico de manera breve para ponernos en contexto con la narración.

Hablamos de una aplicación que pone en contacto a conductores que publican sus trayectos previstos en la web (o en la app) y a viajeros que desean sumarse a esos viajes, de modo que comparten los gastos de gasolina para ahorrar en el desplazamiento. El propietario del coche sufraga parte del viaje y el pasajero, por su parte, paga menos de lo que le supondría el mismo viaje en transporte público. Cien millones de usuarios en Brasil o siete en España dan cuenta del éxito y el cine no se podía quedar ajeno a esto a través de "El cuarto pasajero".

¿Pero qué sucede cuando cuatro desconocidos comparten un trayecto en el que de manera inevitable tienen que conversar? Pues que surge la vida: amistades, romances, accidentes o algo más. "El cuarto pasajero" guioniza las posibles situaciones para hacer parodia. Las secuencias de la gasolinera, el hotel y la caravana estructuran la película en presentación, desarrollo y desenlace con maestría en los tiempos narrativos.

Alberto San Juan interpreta de manera sensacional a Julián. Divorciado, desempleado y en plena crisis está convencido de que sigue siendo sensato, razonable y capaz de conquistar a una chica tan joven para él como es Lorena. Ésta a su vez es interpretado por Blanca Suárez que se encuentra en su punto álgido como actriz. Su personaje, lorena es es una chica romántica, familiar y tirando a formal. El espectador percibe que hay algo más que amistad entre ambos personajes y será en la parte final cuando nos encontremos con la respuesta.

Ernesto Alterio interpreta con tremendo desparpajo a Rodrigo. Un personaje que consigue causar la carcajada varias veces por ser tan caradura y que quizás sea lo mejor de "El cuarto pasajero". Por otro lado está Rubén Cortada (serie El Príncipe) que es el último pasajero en subir al coche y el guaperas del grupo. Si el plan de Julián descarrila, ahí estará él para consolar a Lorena que le utiliza para dar celos a Julián.

Personalmente creo que este personaje es el sostén principal de la peli.

"El cuarto pasajero" me ha parecido una comedia notable, divertida y con un gran ritmo narrativo 👍👍

El cineasta nos muestra a personajes embarcados en un viaje por la vida como si esta fuese una carretera; algo de comedia clásica y, sobre todo, un reparto que lo ha dado todo para que el público disfrute con ello. Nos entrega, por tanto, una película llena de ingenio, de acción, de comedia, de romanticismo y todo ello con su sello personal.
