I've never watched twin peaks but I'm really curious about your feminist reasons for not watching it if you'd care to share them.

Oh absolutely! it basically boils down to the whole Beautiful Dead White Girl trope being CENTRAL around the plot, and also the story having this weird loophole avoidance of the reality of a lot of cases like hers, which is that sexual violence is often perpetrated by friends and family. Of course, real cases also don't have wonky supernatural elements and purgatory and shit but I digress.

Laura Palmer has become a sort of patron saint of Beautiful Dead White Girls, especially when it comes to true crime (which is a whole different genre I have huge problems with but we can save that for another time.) Anyone who's familiar with Twin Peaks can tell you that Laura's absence is more of a character than Laura herself, and thats kind of the point. Audiences love women when they can't speak for themselves, when they're a dead and gone idea that can't object to voyeurism around the tragedy of their lives. They especially love white women with these circumstances because it plays into the hapless victim in need of protection trope which is like, instrumental in white supremacist narratives.

Like as a woman of color who lived in a majority black area, black and brown girls, and poor girls in general are far and away the most frequent victims of shit like this. Not to get too into it but there was a period during my high school career that there was genuinely a girl that got kidnapped walking home and no adults did shit. No warnings at the bell, no discussions with the girls at our school about safety, no acknowledgement that one of our classmates disappeared, nothing. I couldn't sleep for weeks. We had to like, stick together and look out for each other and it was awful and terrifying and it felt like nobody fucking cared.

But that's not the narrative people like. They ignore that shit when it happens to us, which is why it happens to us so much more. Nobody pays attention. We're not salacious and consumable like if it happened to a pretty rich white girl. And even then, why is the brutalization of those women so appealing that it's an entire genre?

It's so funny because I do also have a fascination with Laura Palmer as a cultural figure. She's such a poster girl of Haunting The Narrative that she's fully escaped the narrative and haunts reality. She's a frequent comparison in a lot of tragic real life cases, whether it's a shallow reference or an apt and thoughtful comment on how a victim's life is more complicated than people want to acknowledge.

I really don't want to engage in a narrative like that any further than I've been forced to by cultural osmosis. Even if it's a well crafted story, it's not one that I'm interested in because it has really strengthened a lot of tropes and cultural convictions that aren't only exhausting, but often directly harmful to real victims and their surviving families. Anyway, a lot of my thoughts about this are really well articulated in the book Dead Girls by Alice Bolin, which I HIGHLY recommend I'm obsessed with it. She has a really interesting dissection of how differently Americans approach mystery stories, fiction or nonfiction, and the sort of psychosexual aspects of how Dead Girl stories are told.

Fandoms & Ships

I am a true nerd, and as such, continously seek out new media and their fandoms, and become involved with them, while also cyclically coming back to the ones I already love. I am a romantic, and I love see love in general (all types of love, not just romantic!), so I am also a very big shipper!

I don't always have a set ship(s) for every fandom I find myself in, nor do I think it necessary to try and "prove" that mine are better than other ships. I like what I like, and I like seeing what others like as well. So I might have OTPs, but I also like engaging with content for all kinds of ships, even true rarepairs.

I also don't think it necessary for a fandom to have ships, so just because I have a listed ship that I like/love, doesn't mean I can't have neutral/objective thoughts and opinions about that particular piece of media.

She's desperately trying to prove herself as a Zodiac (Korracore) and has massive dreams of grandeur she'd do anything to fulfill. (ELISE) She likes to think she'd sacrifice anyone and acts cold but really is afraid of connections for the same reason. As a result she's overly attached to the object of her research since she can't hurt it and it can't hurt her. (Rita)

Very reminiscent later on (like frieren) but acts headstrong and louder (like ed or Alice) when she feels passionate enough.

Alope:

Alope doesn't have a last name or parents it seems. She's stuck in someone else's debt... Along with a strong sense of justice... poor common sense while in conversation tho. (Rose++ Also Alope is scared of ghosts just like her too. )

one thing comes to another and Alope goes from that loud kind girl to someone who's been traumatized and feeling at fault... Wrestling her self doubt and resentment but at the same time will still do anything to right her wrongs. (LUZ MY BABY)

An ex knight who follows a strict code of chivalry... he's kind, takes the helm with things are chaotic and is a good leader (Optimus, Lukas). It could be seen as a sort of facade though. Considering he left his past behind and this is sort of his last attempt to relive/fix it but better and older. (Hohenheim)

He's aloof and calm at first which gives him a cold look. But is notoriously sensitive when you know him. (Hohenheim) cares deeply for his family and guild (Vander. Niren). Nanami is on there bc his principle that adults should do things and not children is something Ignis strongly believes too. It's why he's so concerned about the girls.

A Monk whose emotions fluctuate constantly. (Brunhilde) They try to be levelheaded initially but are si passionate about others it spills over in excitement or anger (Reki). Prone to comedy violence when pissed (Okappa). Watches over the guild like how the twins (Chastel and Hisca)... so like nagging sisters BAHAHAH.

A skilled fighter, but has a soft side. (Kisara) they are trying to tap into it, but neglecting their fighting skill, something that was a big part of their identity seems to have made them doubt themselves and envy the others. (Kisara. Reki.)

Enid O.K. KO is the literal inspiration for Enid's name and a littleeee bit of their voice too. I crushed on Enid O.K. KO pretty hard and love the name bc her.

Tank:

Shikamaru, Raven (Tales of Vesperia), Lavi (D-gray man), Maes Hughes, Jake the dog, Saber (Fire emblem echoes)

Most like: tbh. I thought initially that Tank's board was the craziest but all these characters are so much like him I can't pick.

A guy who seems laid back and lazy and complains about work. Does anything to "avoid" it. Who always puts on a huge show so people don't suspect a thing from him. In reality, Tank is very meticulous and picks up on things about his guild before the others do. And despite his complaints about work will always pull more than his weight when he has to. (Literally all of them)

Though he's shady, he stays beside Enid and treats them like a sibling. (Saber) Though at times his treatment of them is dubious and he gives them counter productive advice (Jake)... He sees Enid as an idealist and would do anything to protect her (Hughes). He tries to keep his distance from everyone else, but the longer he stays the harder her finds it as he nature picks up on all the little things about them they don't know. (Lavi) Seems to have some unspoken backstory that affected him and changes his motives. (Raven and Shikamaru)

I did not meet my reading goal this year (and threw my list out the window about a month in) but I think that’s fine because I’ve done more reading in the last six months than I have the last four years, which was the point!!

For my own benefit, and your enjoyment, here’s what I read this year:

Finished:

Indecent Advances: A Hidden History of True Crime and Prejudice Before Stonewall by James Polchin. Absolutely excellent book about the history and formation of the ‘gay panic’ defense. In depth and well researched.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Very glad I never got around to reading this in college because I would have made it my entire personality.

Dead Blondes and Bad Mothers by Jude Ellison S. Doyle. Essay collection that started out strong but I think lost the plot somewhere around the chapter on motherhood and pregnancy. Since publishing the collection the author has come out as trans so I’d be interested to see them revisit some of their points—there were a few times when they brought trans identity into focus but mostly quoted other trans essayists because they felt they were unqualified to speak on the subject, but wanted to include trans women and nonbinary people when relevant. This book gave me a lot to research, and some film recommendations aside lol.

Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado. I actually received this book from a friend back in 2020, read the first story, and went hmmm. Maybe not for me! I finally picked it back up this year and devoured it in a few days. Really delicious, left me feeling sick and raw for some time. Great stuff.

The Locked Tomb series (GtN, HtN, NtN, As Yet Unsent and Dr. Sex) by Tamsyn Muir. As you all know, it has taken over my life. I think this series has a lot of good and bad qualities and was designed to make me, specifically, insane.

Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir. Very fun break down of the ‘princess trapped in a tower’ fairytale. This is one I listened to while driving and doing chores so I’d like to sit down with a print copy some time and dig through it a little more.

Antigonick by Sophocles, translated and reworked by Anne Carson. I love Antigone and Anne Carson so this was just entirely delightful. I really recommend watching the live performance here while you read along with the script!

Did Not Finish:

I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid. Really enjoyed the nonlinear storytelling and subject matter but I put the book down for a month and was completely lost when I tried to pick it back up again so it’ll have to carry over into next year’s reading list!

In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. Just as excellent and unsettling as Her Body, but the narrative hit a little too close to what I went through with my most recent relationship to the point where every chapter made me physically ill so I had to put it down for my own wellbeing. Lol. Someday I’ll return to it. Not this year.

Dead Girls: Essays on Surviving an American Obsession by Alice Bolin. Very disappointing. First few essays were interesting and well written but this is not a cohesive collection and had very little to do with the pitched premise.

This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno. The plot sounded intriguing but I just found the first few chapters a slog. Could be persuaded to give it another shot but it’s not high on my list.

When Ma Mary forbids the girls from seeing Take That in Belfast, they will stop at nothing to get there.

I just too young for a 'This and That' phase. I was just about old enough for Boyzone though. Like Michelle, picking a favourite member (Stephen) as my crush and future boyfriend. Being gutted when he came out, as if that was the only reason we wouldn't be together lmao. The obsession didn't last long before 5ive (Jay) and Blue (Simon) took over. Oh, the fickle boyband whims of the late 90s/early 00s.

Moving (with friend) Ep 8 Black

In 1994, Mihyun approaches black ops agent Kim Doosik at Min Yongjun's orders.

Spies falling in love in the 90s. What a treat! The tense action movie opening scene. Then followed by Mihyun cleverly always crossing paths with Doosik. So subtle as not to arouse suspicion. Thinking she was successful only for him to have known all along. He secretly saw her 2 years before saving people she was told not to and knew then that she was different. They were so good together. I hope we get more time with them.

The Legend of Korra (rw with friend) 1x09 Out of the Past

After being imprisoned by Tarrlok, Korra attempts to analyze the mysterious visions she has been having. Meanwhile, Tenzin, Lin, Mako, Bolin and Asami search for Korra, having been given false information by Tarrlok.

Why did I think Tarrlok was actually Amon and playing both sides? I did not remember the plot at all apparently. I guess I was too distracted by why Korra and Asami are fighting over Mako when they're obviously meant for each other.

Listening to the audio book of dead girls by Alice Bolin after reading the majority of the book before I had to return it is so weird because the narrator's tone shify directly on the word Koreatown makes it seem like Bolin is disgusted with la not living up to her expectations and not literally just describing an average city. Anyway can wr talk about overenunciated weirdly unemotional audiobook narration that seemingly chooses at random when to inflect up or down in ways that wildly changes the tone of the text because this keeps happening. Why aren't they read by like. Voice actors instead of the least skilled theater major available

All your Children, Scattered - Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse. French. Story of 3 generations, torn apart by the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

Invisible Women - Caroline Criado Perez. We often forget that bias is built into our environment as we often imagine social issues in their theoretical instead of physical manifestations.

Inflamed - Rupa Marya. Deep medecine and the anatomy of injustice.

Cane, Corn & Gully - Safiya Kamaria Kinsbasa. A collection of poems about Barbados, slavery, colonialism, patriarchy and oppression as a whole.

Autobiography of my Mother - Jamaica Kincaid

The Will to Change - Bell Hooks

Sula - Toni Morrison. Follows the life of a young black girl and the small town/settlement she lived in, exploring racism and female friendships.

Happening - Annie Ernaux. Autobiographical account of French feminist Annie Ernaux's experience with accessing abortion when it was illegal in France. Powerful and important. Will make you cry whilst also getting you to admire the myriad ways in which wmen resisted and continue to resist state violence.

Postcolonial Love Poem - Natalie Diaz. Collection of poetry exploring the experiences of Native Americans and how it feels to have your land taken from you and changed into something you no longer recognise.

My job, was to eliminate each INTERPOL Lutheran working out of Scientology, ECT, AA, NA, and lobotomy clinics.

Her job, was to print me, while dispatching RCMP, physically and violently, to frame our unit command, a Jesuit named Matthew Lennox (Bill).

We’ve known each other since kindergarten, all three of us (Bill, Budd, Elle).

Alice Claire O’Neill (US Navy): 

Alice’s most notorious relative: Friedrich Nietzsche, distant cousin, deployed during German Reformation as Irish Mother Superior (British Espionage Agency, Shylock and Homes of Garters).
