Love how whenever Ragna is in Lost Town all the tiny Kakas in a 200m ratio just go "It's free real estate" and start climbing him

Rereading/watching Calamity Trigger's Story Mode and going down every character to see some interesting tidbits I may've overlooked or get some new perspective or just plain old atm thoughts upon finishing their story. Want to get my thoughts down and ramble starting with Ragna and Jin.
Ragna's CT story is kinda... uninteresting on it's own for the most part. There's moments here and there that are fascinating particularly with the bad end he fuses with Nu and becomes "Something" with her that devolves into the Black Beast. Besides that it's a pretty straight forward introduction to Ragna as a protagonist but not so much as a character if that makes sense. It sells well the idea that he's the gruff protag on a mission with a heart of gold somewhere deep at the same time though it doesn't sell well the idea of him being the guy who can mercilessly mow down an army like how he could in his short story that ties in to CT. Like he's clearly not as stable as he appears as clear in the alt ending where he gets saved by Jubei from Hakumen but it ultimately ends up overshadowed by his feel as a protagonist.
There's two scenes that aren't interesting by themselves in the story mode but are within wider context. One of them is his scene with Rachel and her possy of Nago, Gii, and later Valkenhayn doing everything in their power to piss him off. Before some retconning later on Ragna does not recognize Valkenhayn making this their first meeting here. Between this and him not knowing Trinity as a Six Hero makes me wonder if there was originally some reason why he wouldn't know that information like it was intentionally withheld. The other scene for more peculiar reasons is the previously mentioned scene of Jubei saving Ragna for a few reasons. Despite Jubei saving him Ragna's reaction is one of anger and indignation at being saved before having a meltdown that had to be cured by going to the chinese food place with Tao. It's this and his vitriol with Rachel that really does have me believe that his relationship with them and his sanity was deteriorating bad the longer he was doing his thing. As an aside his lecture to Ragna about the adage concerning the Azure and what he should be fighting for is was weird with context. The adage "Do not mistake the Power of the Azure as your own" is fine on a surface level but really ill placed concerning the fact Ragna is having a quite literal skill issue in dealing with Hakumen and not a misuse of the Azure Grimoire. And the "What are you fighting for? You're losing sight of what's really important" bit is strange because it's obviously about having having the power of the Azure to save and protect his loved ones but Jubei himself destroyed that notion in Ragna by telling him that Saya can't be saved and leaving only his hatred of Terumi and anything related to him. Just really odd.
As a fun fact that I just realized Ragna's nickname of "Good Guy" by Tao was first coined by Rachel describing him her as a backhanded compliment over sparing Arakune.
Jin's story mode was honestly a fun read and a good introduction to him as a character. It really does sell him well as a callous dead-inside man who can only really start feeling alive once he thinks he can kill his brother again. From seeing the cold disregard he had to Bang and anything to with Ikaruga to the manic insanity he has when he deals with either Ragna or Noel is really striking. It paints well the kind of person who could make the mistakes that would make Hakumen in one timeline. Yeah I just don't have anything really negative to say in this regard.
90% it's just my weird interpretation but seeing the different facets of Jin displayed here makes it seems like he has multiple personalities. It's like he has different personalities for times and places rather than a transitory and developing one over all. From how he's a friendly and kind student back in the military academy, how he's like in when the story mode takes place, and even the nascent form of what I'd call "emo LN protag Jin" is present. I can't think of exact moments where Jin changes like Makoto does in Heart to Heart where she goes abrasive to who she later becomes. He just goes from Friendly Student Council President in his school days, to Broody LN Protag in Spiral Shift, to the Callous Arrogant Dickhead he is by CT's time and there's no in-between for any of them. Just my thoroughly wrong atm though and not a big deal.
There was a curious thing going where the narration focuses on his right hand a few times like how it was stained in Noel Vermillion's blood one in one scene or how he could only move it and not the rest of his body in another. The former could've been symbolic of his part in the burning of the church (going by a CT only interpretation and maybe killing Saya but that's bunked) but he's pretty much a non entity in terms of blame nowadays.
Surprisingly there's a brief line a dialogue from the head of the Kisaragi Family here. It's actually positive concerning his talents.
That about sums up my immeadiate thoughts. Onto Noel and Rachel next.

pls know that when i get around to it ( which will be soon ), i'm gonna go insane talking about endir's domain/the afterlife bc it's basically the spirit realm and it's its own thing entirely -- a whole society?? pretty much dwells there bc how is endir supposed to care for, sort, punish, etc. so many souls alone?? impossible my friends. he's got a whole court/network of people who help him. i just gotta decide if his castle has hammerspace essentially or if there's a city behind it....... either way, what if your muse was dead and met the big guy of the afterlife and became one of his little helpers huh

Annon-Guy: Accidents happen 😊. I'll just send it again.
SMB with Platinum the Trinity
Noel, Es and Litchi for Sena.
Ragna, Naoto and Kagura for Luna.
No, not gonna hook them up with Jubei. He's their master and father figure after all.
Ragna: No! We're done with this crap! *stomps off*
Jubei: Platinum's literally a frickin' kid, ya weirdoes.
I know this doesn't seem much, but Platinum's one of those characters that I'm not gonna entertain being placed in such posts.
Plus, that subject due to the nature of the character may open up a huge can of worms.

It’s less noticeable in the anime, but Frieren learning how to make grapes sour (ep2) when sour grapes are Eisen’s favorite (ep3 flashback) is one of my favorite details that made me tear up reading the manga.
It’s not a whole arc like her learning spells to know Himmel better. But it touched me equally… she is growing so much…. Even at the start.

On another talk of myth comparisons, superficially albeit, regarding Ragna and his siblings there’s two I’ve got in mind. One being the Chthulu Mythos and the other being Norse for separate reasons.
The Cthulhu Mythos comparison in mind is on how Ragna, Jin, and Saya were conceived. The union of a Black Beast and a Prime Field Device in particular the 5th. The union of an Eldritch Abomination and (Artificial) human women producing offspring for the ambitions of another brings a comparison of the Whateley’s of the Dunwich Horror fame. Thankfully they’re born less deformed in many senses of the word.
The other comparison is them being similar to the three children of Loki with the Giantess Angrboda. Those being Hel, Fenrir, and Jormungandr. Saya sorta being Hel is the obvious one with her becoming the body of the underworld associated entity Izanami. Ragna being similar to Jormungandr as they both start off as as diminutive in comparison to their siblings at the start before becoming world ending threats along with a theme of serpents. Jin being comparable to Fenrir is honestly the outlier to my knowledge without making serious stretches to make something work.
Not to be taken seriously. Like I said in the beginning these comparisons are superficial. Just a thought i decided to jot down.

I don't have a perfect grasp on Jubei as a character yet (haven't even started a proper character study of him) but I was thinking about him the other day, and his role as a father. People like to talk/debate/joke about him being a good or bad parent, and I get that's its own conversation, but it got me thinking.
I ended up, uh, rambling here, so TLDR;
I think Jubei's decision to start taking in kids like Ragna, Luna and Sena was inspired by a lot of complicated feelings, including
Every time he leaves, thinking the kids will be safe, things go to shit- he's guilty for that and doesn't want to make the same mistake again. (Kokonoe clearly hated her childhood, he left the kids with Celica and then the Church Incident happened)
Ragna looks so much like 'Bloodedge,' there may have been a sense of closeness/familiarity there, and a desire to not leave his friend behind a second time- especially to face certain death again (Bloodedge v. Black Beast, kid Ragna v. Terumi)
Ragna's desire to hunt down and kill Terumi could also bring back memories of Tomonori, who Jubei let chase Terumi despite knowing he couldn't win- and surprise, surprise, Tomonori died. Could Jubei let another person make the same mistake??? Let a fucking kid do it?
Jubei never really agrees to be a father or a parent to these kids, and doesn't see himself as one. He agrees to be their teacher until they're strong enough to take care of themselves, because they have no one else.
Wow even my TLDRs are too fuckin' long
As for the theory/rant in its entirety, which may just repeat the same points in more words;
I'd argue that Jubei hasn't wanted to be a father since Kokonoe. I haven't been able to read the parts of Phase Shift where he and Nine are together, so I don't know how he felt about having a child on the way. But as I understand it, he didn't leave her until he was being framed as a terrorist, being hunted down, at risk of being executed/assassinated.
He left Kokonoe behind in hopes she would be safer without him. Ultimately that may not have been the best choice, but it was a reasonable choice for a man who would have to spend the rest of his life on the run. And since then, I don't think he's ever seen himself as a father.
He got involved in Ragna's life first when he rescued the sibling trio from the lab where they were being held. We don't know a hell of a lot about that story either, but it seems like he had zero intention of raising any of them. He brings them to Celica, where he thinks they'll be safe and he can fully trust that they'll be loved. He views Celica as capable of being a parent, but he knows he himself isn't. He's a wanderer, a warrior, he can't provide the kids the life they deserve. So, again, he leaves them behind, where he thinks they can have a better life.
But he's wrong. He's so, so wrong. After the attack on the church, Jubei's only remaining family is dead, and everything Ragna had is also gone, assumed dead. Jubei walked away once and hurt his daughter, he walked away twice and lives were lost.
I think his choice to take Ragna in, after that, was a complicated one. I don't think Jubei ever saw it as adoption. I'd argue that Jubei and Ragna are undoubtedly a family, but I don't think Jubei would call it that openly, and I definitely don't think he was looking at it like that at the start.
I think, for Jubei, it was the only choice left after his neglect had caused so much pain.
And I think, knowing Terumi was at the heart of it again, seeing Ragna's hatred and desire for revenge, I think maybe Jubei thought of Tomonori. The brother he lost because he let him chase Terumi alone. Maybe that circled back, as another person his inaction/abandonment had left to die. How could he walk away again? Let another person charge unprepared into a fight against Terumi? Let a kid do it?
And I find it pretty hard to believe that, looking at young Ragna, Jubei didn't see his old friend. Bloodedge. Someone who changed his life, someone he held onto the memory of years after the short time they knew each other. Someone who also 'died' (as far as Jubei knows) because Jubei left him behind- even if he was asked to, even if they agreed upon it, even if it was for the best.
Tumblr media
And even then, Jubei never considers himself a father. He doesn't let or encourage Ragna to call him 'dad', even though it's clear he loves him like a son. He doesn't see himself as a father. He agreed to be a (combat) teacher. That's what Ragna wanted and (in Jubei's eyes) needed at the time. It's what Luna and Sena would later need of him. Jubei has been a warrior all his life- he can be a teacher. But I don't think he thinks he could be a father, and I don't think he would ever agree to be one if asked. Not since he lost Kokonoe.

6- Play
Got a bit backed up, but considering tomorrow's the weekend and I'm already about 85% of the way through the next prompt, I'm not gonna worry about it too much. Just trying to enjoy the process!
Today I'm going to Blazblue, because when I think lighthearted silly comfort, Taokaka is one of the first characters to pop up. She's great. And I'd gladly take this as an excuse for some goofy bonding time with cousin Ragna, because if this is a series stuffed full of fluff and a bunch of fictional characters I love, then I'm absolutely dragging in headcanons too. This is my circus now.
-
Did Kakas follow any kind of logical system? That was a riddle for the ages, and Ragna had no intention of providing an answer. His regular life already pushed him to the very edges of his sanity. He had no intention in trying to scientifically dissect the rationale of what was basically chaos incarnate. Sure, Terumi was a loose cannon, but from a purely measured analysis, the Kaka clan steamrolled him to the point of making the god look like a persnickety rule-follower.
They were, at least, funny about it. Ragna had been laying low in their village for a little while, which gave him many opportunities to be face-to-face with their personal brand of ‘what-the-hell-are-you-doing.’ Some things, if he thought about it, were sort of normal cat behavior. Falling asleep at random was normalized, he’d seen many of them pause mid-activity or halfway through a conversation to sleep in wherever was convenient. There were no table manners to speak of whatsoever- then again, he himself wasn’t the neatest, either. Most Kakas spent their days the way children did; they ate, they slept, they frolicked, all without any real thought going on behind their eyes.
A few Kakas were able to string more than a few sentences along without breaking for a nap or rambling about finding something to eat. If he had any serious questions, he tended to go to them. Then again, ‘smarter’ and ‘smart’ were two different things. Maybe it was silly to be surprised. He tended to stick around Tao, anyway, she was the one he knew best, so he felt more comfortable.
…It still did not mean he understood her behaviors, though. After getting separated, he’d found her swatting some kind of rubber ball between her paws. The thing was visibly battered, riddled with teeth marks and unknown dark stains, but Tao was messing with it like it was the hottest new thing this year. Several of the town’s kittens tried to smack at it, but she danced just out of reach whenever they got close.
“Tao?” He asked, putting a hand on his hip. “The heck are you doing?”
She continued playing while she turned to face him, somehow still keeping the toy out of the kittens’ grasp. “Meow! Tao’s playing Kaka-ball, Good Guy! Wanna play?”
“‘Kaka-ball?’ I’ve never seen you play that before, so...I’m pretty sure you made it up just now. And where did you even get-”
Before he could object further, the kittens became more interested in him than in the ball. They swarmed him, mewling in delight and rubbing against his legs.
“Play! Play! Good Guy’s gotta play with us!”
“Let’s play, Good Guy!”
“I wanna play Kaka-ball with Good Guy!”
“I guess it’s settled then, meow!” Tao chirped. “Good Guy can be the boss of one team, and Tao can be boss of the other!”
“But I don’t- oh, fine…” Ragna sighed. He’d been through much worse. He could play some goofy little game for a few minutes.
He watched the cats circle him. Several clustered around Tao, while the rest made a wobbly line nearby him. “Let’s play Kaka-ball, meow!” The girl announced. “Try to keep the ball away from Good Guy, meow! He’s super strong, but Tao is super fast!”
Tao tossed the ball in the air, and it landed in the middle of their little group. She crouched to the ground on all fours, tail swishing back and forth. As he looked on, Ragna noticed the others doing the same.
He blinked in quiet confusion. “Uh…so do we just-”
“Mrr!” He was cut off by Tao’s yowling.“Cheater! Cheater! You can’t be all tall like that, it’s not fair! You gotta get down and run around on the grass like everyone else, it’s no fun if you can just catch the ball!”
The kittens murmured in agreement. He looked at them all with dismay. “Tao, I’m not a cat, you can’t just expect me to-”
“Cheeeeeater!”
He groaned. Screw it, screw the whole thing. He’d never had much dignity to begin with.
As soon as he awkwardly crouched down, the Kakas purred with approval. “Okay, now we can start! Ready? Tao says one-two-three GO!”
Several cats dove for the ball immediately. Even if he wasn’t weirdly off-balanced, Ragna would have stayed back and stayed out of trouble. He’d already lost track of who was on what team. Why had he thought this was a good idea?
“Good Guy! Catch!”
The ball flew in his direction. He reached out to catch it, only remembering last-second about Tao’s complaints. It hit his palms, but he let it bounce and hit the dirt. More kittens immediately turned in his direction, eyes expectant.
“Uh…” Ragna looked back and forth. “Catch?”
He pawed the ball with the back of his hand, nudging it toward one of the kittens off to the side, and it was like he’d given the cats the best news of their life. Tao started cheering, even as she began chasing the next kitten who had caught the ball.
“C'mon! Run, Good Guy! Gotta keep up!”
It wasn’t exactly comfortable, but there was something hilarious about how goddamn bizarre it all was, to the point where he cracked a smile. He hobbled after the pack on all fours, swatting at the grass to try and grab the ball again.
