“My bar has always been an inclusive bar,” she said. “Trans people should be respected and have rights, and lesbian women who are born female should also have a space for themselves.” “If the young woman said: I prefer women, then the trans woman was offended and cried transphobia. But this young woman is not transphobic, it’s just a matter of consent, she doesn’t like penises, since she’s a lesbian!”

A lesbian bar that has operated in Rennes, France for nearly a decade has been forced to close its doors following a disturbing swell of vandalism and death threats by trans activists. Orane Guéneau, the owner and manager of lesbian bar La Part des Anges, was publicly denounced as “transphobic” and accused of “misgendering” by critics.

Speaking with Ouest France, Guéneau said she made the decision to shut down the venue to protect her employees in response to increased aggression, both online and at her storefront. On April 14, four unnamed trans activists spray painted the menacing message “Fuck TERFs,” accompanied by a trans symbol, on the front door of the venue during activities that were aimed at opposing national pension reform.

“I have to close after the attack that we experienced,” Guéneau told Ouest France. “The window was tagged and a pane was broken, it was hyperviolent for employees and customers, and the bar was full.”

A few days before the acts of vandalism were committed, Guéneau made a book critical of trans activism available to her patrons. 

Titled When Girls Become Boys and written by Marie-Jo Bonnet, her detractors considered the act to be representative of her “coming out” as transphobic, and condemned her on social media. 

But the backlash was not limited to vandalism and social media condemnation, Guéneau also started to receive threatening messages scrawled on paper slipped under her door last month, some of which read: “Save a trans, commit suicide,” and “One bullet, one TERF.” 

Guéneau faced further harassment throughout the month of May when a local chapter of the French feminist organization Nous Toutes published a statement calling for their supporters to boycott the bar. 

“In Rennes or elsewhere: no feminism without trans people,” reads the call to action from Nous Toutes 35. “For several years, people from the Queer community have been denouncing attacks against them in a bar in Rennes: La Part des Anges. These recurring assaults are all the more problematic since this bar claims an identity as a lesbian and feminist bar.”

The statement continues: “Therefore, it’s important that this bar finally gets massively denounced. We would also like to call on the various political, activist or cultural organizations to stop organizing with this bar… transphobes have no place in our struggles.”

In response to the statement from Nous Toutes 35, Guéneau announced that she had filed a complaint for defamation, harassment and cyber-harassment.

Yet despite the claims of “transphobia,” Guéneau has said that her venue has always been accepting of people who claim to be transgender. 

“My bar has always been an inclusive bar,” she said. “Trans people should be respected and have rights, and lesbian women who are born female should also have a space for themselves.”

However, tensions have escalated over the past five years as Guéneau defended lesbian patrons who were being harassed by men who self-identified as women and attended the venue seeking sex.

On multiple occasions, Guéneau told Charlie Hebdo, trans-identified males came to the lesbian bar to flirt with same-sex attracted women. 

“If the young woman said: I prefer women, then the trans woman was offended and cried transphobia. But this young woman is not transphobic, it’s just a matter of consent, she doesn’t like penises, since she’s a lesbian!”

Women’s rights campaigner and founder of FemellisteMarguerite Stern shared her support for Guéneau, and questioned the accusations of “misgendering” leveled against her. Stern also placed blame for some of the harassment Guéneau endured in part on Nous Toutes for their public condemnation of the venue.

Nous Toutes, the liberal feminist group spearheading the harassment of the lesbian bar, has previously attacked causes they deemed to be “transphobic.”

In 2022, the group announced it would no longer provide data on domestic femicides due to concerns over the sex-based data being used by “transphobes.”

Nous Toutes had originally been founded to provide public insight into violence against women and girls in France, but launched into a social media war with another anti-femicide campaign group over transgenderism. 

After Féminicides Par Compagnons ou Ex accurately reported that no trans-identified males had been murdered by domestic violence in France in 6 years, Nous Toutes responded by suspending their release of any data related to the murder of women and girls in the nation, claiming that the information was “oppressive” and “otherwise illegal.”

Nous Toutes then convened to determine how to make their femicide data reporting more “inclusive,” floating strategies which included counting general transphobia as femicide.

Violence against women critical of gender ideology is a regular occurrence in France, with multiple instances of women being physically attacked for not accepting the concept that trans-identified males were “female” being recorded over the past two years.

Reduxx previously reported on violence breaking out at French pro-woman events deemed “transphobic,” including on International Women’s Day in 2021 and 2022 when a number of women were left with injuries from rampaging trans activists. 

In April of this year, a symposium intended to raise awareness of the plight of Afghan and Iranian women was abruptly postponed after trans activists threatened to violently ambush the event because of the presence of a gender critical speaker.

here's a bonkers thing that happened to me: I was in the crowd at the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting in 2014 when Mariah Carey absolutely bombed her performance because at the time my coworker was able to get us passes to a VIP area (not super close, but close enough that we could see & didn't have to wait in the cold all day). it was a really neat experience overall and something I never would have done without that connection--the Pentatonix & Cyndi Lauper performances were both really good even though I felt horrible for Mariah and whatever was going on; it was hard to watch.

sorry thinking of angel again (especially after recently talking to @dogmotif) and his complexities….. literally he was not suddenly made good by having a soul. yeah it made him feel remorse and guilt but it didn’t absolve him of being a vampire. he still had violent impulses and had to control himself as he attempted to live some semblance of a human life while also being a demon that feeds upon the life force of living beings, particularly humans. he’s shown throughout both shows struggling with his vampirism. he could feed or kill humans but didn’t besides in certain instances. yes he had this consciousness forced upon him that shapes his actions, but he actively chose to help others. he accepted a second chance and continued with it even though he went beyond his initial mission of assisting buffy and had dark periods and sometimes went about things in the wrong way but his intentions weren’t bad. he understands he won’t be fully absolved of his past but being able to make SOME positive change in the current is important and that’s a reward in of itself

Patients- One way to win Raphiel is with patience. It'll also help with future development in the relationship. Which naturally means I'm going to go into detail about it.

After Echo died he blamed himself for causing her death by trying to have children with her. He never deemed himself worthy to have a mate or even a lover since. He's been celibate ever since Echos passing and that was in 1706.

So whenever he felt an attraction toward a women he annoys them by acting obnoxious and full of himself until they tell him of and break his heart with their words.

Since he's a cambion (he doesn't know his and Lillith's mother was a succubus) it hurts greatly when his heart is broken.

So if a women he fancies doesn't get snippy with him over the corse of him trying to get them to break his heart his walls will eventually crumble and he'll confess his love to them in hopes they'll reject him.

If they accept his love (for whatever reason) they'll have to be patient when it comes to affection as he hasn't done such things since Echo and is very rusty as results. He's going to end up being very old fashioned for awhile exspecaly with gifts, those are going to range from flowers and chocolate to hand made jewelry and delicious meals.

Like most of the Vittagarðr's, he isn't familiar with the monthly thing women go through that I like to call Shark Week. During that time he's unaware of potentially being yelled at and try to do anything to make his mates pain subside.

Hopefully his mate catches on soon and explains/teaches him what the monthly occurrence of mother nature taking potato peelers to their womb is so he can make himself of use. He'll actively ask her what she'll need and even fetch the women's care products needed, but she'll need to write it down for him or else he'll with buy every menstruation product under the sun.

As for bedroom activities... that's going to be a good few months to a year for him to be comfortable with. He's unaware of what condoms are and like most of the Vittagarðr males he most likely won't use them since they feel unnatural and uncomfortable to him.

So the pill or other female contraceptives will be the best way to go. He's willing to try anything she wants to try but he'll need some guidance and time to get a grasp on how to do it. If his mate wants children they'll have to be incredibly patient with him on that and listen to him when he tells them he's afraid of what happened to Echo will happen to them.

Therfore, doing an essay/presentation/paper of sorts with information on how mother and infant survival is higher then it was back then, a lot of reassurance that what happend with echo won't happen to them since medical techniques have improved vastly since then, and convincing him that Echo's death wasn't his fault will do wonders for warming him up to being a father again.

"i'll... i'll cut your throat. that'll shut you up!" you cried out as tears welled up in your eyes, falling down from them and staining his dark suit. you heaved as the tears made your voice crack up, as you sniffled back the tears before his blood would be on your hands.

peter kept gazing at you, and unexpectedly... he smiled. he didn't grin nor smirk, he smiled–his smile was devoid of any underhanded plan to hurt you or outsmart you, or even to be released from your grasp. he was... just smiling because he'd see you in his final moments.

"...you're beautiful." he whispered out with a smile as you brought the blade up higher in preparation to cut his throat. and that... that changed something in you, in your hardwired belief that these acts could possibly offer you more of a way out of the very job that forced you to do it. "i love you, my... my lover. d-do what you must. i'll forgive you... for whatever happens." he breathed out as his smile widened weakly, the corners of his mouth stretching as he smiled.

and soon... you fell weak. you threw the blade down and it clattered against the floor, you remained on top of peter, a sobbing mess. you let go of his neck, and when he still reached out for your hand and touched you... you felt so dirty, so evil at that moment–too evil to be touched by the one man who loved you even if you had to kill him just so you wouldn't have to kill others.

"i'm... i'm a fool..." you said as you sobbed into his chest as he sat up and wrapped his arms around you. "please, don't love me anymore, peter... you can't possibly–" before you could even continue that statement, peter wrapped you in his arms, hugging you, holding you tightly, letting you know he'll never let you go again. "my beloved... i wish you told me..." he whispered as he rubbed your back as you sobbed into the crook of his neck. "i couldn't have... i didn't want to risk losing your trust... today was supposed to be my last day, my final mission–i never anticipated it would... it would be... you i'd have to murder... i'm sorry..." you choked out as peter kissed your cheek and held you closer.

"it's okay, my love... and no, you can never, ever lose my trust." he reassured you with a soft voice. "even though... i kept secrets from you?" "there are some things you'd rather keep from me in fear... that i'd never understand you." he said as he slowly pulled away and wiped a tear away from your eye. "but i'm more than willing to help get you out of this life, my dearest. i'm... still shaken that you... you could've killed me, but... i know you never wanted that, and i love you for choosing your own path, for... doing that." he said as he placed his hand on your cheek, and you held that hand of his.

"let's get out of here... and maybe, maybe we can live normally, together." he said as you got up and helped him to his feet, with you wiping the remaining tears in your eyes as you looked at your fallen comrades. "i'd... i really want that, peter. do you think i'm worthy of that life?" you asked him as he held your hand and smiles at you affectionately again. "if you're not worthy, then i'm certainly never going to be, not in a million years... because i can't live a peaceful life without you being in it, darling." he said as you wrapped your arms around his chest and held him close again. a meek thank you from you was heard by him, and that was all he ever wanted to hear at that moment.

your long overdue closure with him finally would come in the form of a peaceful, domestic life with him–like you've both always dreamed of. maybe then, just maybe... you could finally find peace within yourself when you see the way he looks at you, even after all that chaos. because when he looks at you... he can see a changing heart, one that never wanted to dirty itself nor harm the world, one that beat for him–and one that tried their hardest to amend their ways and let him love them wholeheartedly.

Kabesang Tales - Isang Rap en Rol Musical

A Filipino Musical that hasn't left my mind since the mid 2010s

Although the Philippines is known for its many talented singers which include many that had crossed over to Broadway such as Lea Salonga, and Rachelle Ann Go, alongside many other Filipino-American talents like Conrad Ricamora, Arielle Jacobs, George Salazar, and Darren Criss just to name a few, the musical scene in the Philippines itself isn't as popular nor as successful in the country as it really should be.

Even with Filipino-majority musicals in states like the controversial Broadway musical "Here Lies Love" which narrates the life story of Imelda Marcos, one of the most controversial figures in Filipino politics and history today, and with Filipino stars often taking in lead or secondary roles in major productions, the musical boom of the 2010s did not come with a boom for the musical industry in the local level compared to the sudden popularity of American musicals like Hamilton, Heathers, Dear Evan Hansen, or Be More Chill to name a few.

The very few musicals that did garner the spotlight did not receive the same notoriety of these foreign productions save for one of the few musical movies to have gotten major media acclaim Loy Arcena's Ang Larawan (2017) (en. The Portrait) based on the 1997 play of the same name by National Artist Nick Joaquin which became a media frenzy as being maybe one of the few if not the only original movie not based on major series or created by a large production company to be released that year for the Metro Manila Film Festival. One of the things that had skyrocketed it to media attention was the fact that most theaters did not screen it and it was only shown in very few cinemas, but that's a story for another time.

Despite the time and devotion Filipino musical fans may have for theatre, rarely do Filipino made and produced musicals ever enter the pop culture zeitgeist due to many factors like the lack of advertising, accessibility issues, and honestly the lack of cast recordings. Out of the many throughout the 2010s, one of the few I was able to watch that I still think about at times is Ricky Lee's very own rap and rock musical Kabesang Tales.

Kabesang Tales - Isang Rap en Rol Musical) (en. Captain Tales - A Rap n' Roll Musical) is a rap and rock musical first performed in the year 2015 and was written by renowned Filipino writer and National Artist Ricky Lee. The musical was directed by Alejandro "Bong" Ramos, with music by Jeffrey Hernandez and Alfredo Ongleo, and produced by Red Lantern Production (Inquirer, 2015).

The musical stars John Arcilla as the titular character Telesforo Juan "Kabesang Tales" De Dios, famously known for his breakout role as Hen. Anotnio Luna in the historical film Heneral Luna released the same year as the musical, alongside other talents such as Dio Marco as Karyo, Kevin Posadas as Tano de Dios, Alecx Lorica as Juli De Dios among many other talented actors (Inquirer, 2015).

The play is based on Jose Rizal's El Filibusterismo (en. The Filibuster) and more specifically, the character of Kabesang Tales, the head of his barangay (a sort of Filipino village) and father of Basilio's main love interest Juli, who had turned into a guerilla bandit after his family and life were ruined by the Spanish friars. He becomes the feared Matanglawin (en. Hawkeye) who terrorizes the countryside. He plays a minor but important role in the books, being the father of one of the main secondary characters as well as being one of the main allies of the primary characters as they tried to start a revolution in the country.

The play primarily focuses on his perspective throughout the whole book with some scenes focusing more on the main protagonists Simoun and Basilio as well as his daughter Juli.

Performances and Releases

The musical had limited performances throughout some parts of the CALABARZON Region or Region IV-A, with some select performances in Metro Manila as well as some other provinces like in Mindoro, sometime during the years 2015-2017 with some being done in local cultural centers and schools throughout the region with very limited promotion outside of news stories.

The only promotional material I could really find are some posts on Facebook and a trailer in the Red Lantern Production's YouTube channel which could be seen here:

There are no original cast recordings that I could find of any of the songs and the only material that I could find besides this are uploads on YouTube of scattered scenes from different parts of the play:

I was also able to find a collection of clips of Karyo, a character possibly named after Karyo from Mga Ibong Madaragit which is a continuation novel of the El Filibusterismo written by Amado Hernandez, played by Terrence Guillermo.

I remember some time in the 2010s seeing uploads of members of the cast singing in interviews I believe but I could no longer find any of these videos.

As of now, it is unknown if the production will ever come back with the last post on the Facebook page having been in 2021 with a post prior to posted on July 2019 calling for auditions in August 2019, possibly hinting that there was a planned 2020 tour for the musical before the pandemic hit.

The Plot (mostly from memory)

As there's barely any material of the live musical, I'll do my best to recollect what I could remember with the aide of the actual books to guide me. Of course, spoilers for Rizal's books Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo if you haven't read them.

The plot follows the events of El Filibusterismo but mainly from the perspective of the titular character Kabesang Tales. It begins with an extremely happy and optimistic scene with him, his family, and barangay as well as the visit of Basilio, Tales's daughter's lover to their house. I remember that there was an extremely cheesy song here between the two that a lot of people squealed over.

The perspective switches over to Basilio and his visit to his mother's grave where he is shocked to see a man there who is revealed to be the thought to be dead fugitive Crisostomo Ibarra who now goes by Simoun, a jewelry merchant from the United States. The two have a bit of an argument where Simoun tries to convince Basilio to join him and his rebellion and I don't recall exactly if there was a song, but it seems likely.

Perspective switches back to Tales as tragedy strikes as his entire family gets struck with malaria resulting in the death of his wife. I don't remember all the details here or if there was a song, but I remember a sort of depressing atmosphere for the rest of this part.

The family struggles with money and friars come over to cause even more problems for them. There's a rap battle here between Tales and a friar. Here starts his downward spiral as he struggles to make ends meet as well as handle the friars that had been trying to gain his land. I don't recall if it's shown that he has to pay for a lot of lawyers, but he starts paying more and more for legal fees because of the legal drama with the friars and the government.

My sister tells me that there's a song about how good the friars are before they get properly introduced and I have a hazy memory of three friars wearing varied outfits typically associated with friars posing for the stage as people sing songs of praise and goodwill. My sister tells me that Basilio was in the ensemble here.

His son, Tano, gets drafted to the Guardia Civil (en. Civil Guard) and sent to the Caroline Islands because Tales could not pay money to prevent his draft due to their financial struggles. This is shown as a heart wrenching scene in the play where the rest of the family is left distraught.

He starts guarding his property in fear of bandits possibly taking his fields and taking whatever he has left.

Tales then gets taken by these bandits who demand ransom money for his return. There he meets Karyo, one of its leaders who tells him about the struggles of the working class and why he and the others had resorted to being bandits in the first place (?). I don't actually remember if this is the first they meet or what since I do remember that the two have a philosophical discussion about violence later and that Karyo is definitely a member of the bandits but there are scenes where he acts as the emcee during Tales's rap battle with the friar.

The bandits later lets him go back to his family where he finds that he has no one left.

Juli, in order to help with her family's financial struggles as well as pay for her father's ransom, leaves home and asks for loans and find work.

If I'm not mistaken, his father Tandang Selo goes mute with the grief of the continuous tragedies that had struck the family as well. It's hard for me to remember if this was shown in the musical.

When Tales returns, he finds himself at a loss for what has happened to his family. He is left with his daughter forced to work and his father mute. He is then met with Simoun, who comes to him as a jeweler. Simoun tempts him with some ideas of radicalization against the friars and he refuses at first before spiraling further and joining Karyo and his bandits, becoming the feared Matanglawin.

I genuinely don't remember if his meeting with Simoun was also in the musical or not but it's important context for the story.

The musical then switches perspective to Basilio, who gets implicated with a conspiracy against the government and gets arrested. A heartbroken Juli goes to Padre Camorra, a creepy priest that's been trying to corner her, to beg for his help since she saw no one else that could help her. This leads into a rather intense scene acted in shadows and lights where it is heavily implied that Juli gets assaulted.

After this, Juli sings a song about her assault where she contemplates getting revenge or retaliating but instead chooses to jump off to end her life.

The scene switches back to Tales who, unlike in the books, meet with his son again who has returned to the Philippines. This one, I know had a song in it since I remembered the extreme daddy issues punk rock vibes the scene gave off. He sang about how he no longer respected his father and that it's too late to repair things if I recall as he's now a bandit and he's a member of the Guardia Civil.

Desolate and distraught at the loss of his family, Tales gets visited by a diwata (a forest spirit/fairy) and this part was extremely out of left field and absolutely not in the books.

Here, the diwata shows Tales visions of the future (???) and directly tells him, without any sort of subtlety, that the working class, and especially farmers like him, will continue to struggle in his country in the future. He is then shown a scene of farmers in a protest who were then taken down by police in what I remember as riot gear. He contemplates the future and is further given resolve to continue his rebellion.

I need to cut in and say that this was so on the nose and is by far the weirdest and personally maybe the worst part of the show. I'm not even against the message, it just ruined my immersion and just left a weird taste in my mouth. I think the play was doing a plenty good job driving that point across already without the time travel diwata scene but maybe that's just me.

The scene cuts back to the climax of the story where Basilio, distraught over then death of Juli, finally joins Ibarra as they plant a bomb in a wedding reception that the Governor-General of the Philippines was attending. The scene plays out like it was in the books where the lamp gets tossed out by Isagani and the revolution doesn't start.

It goes back to a scene of Tales and his men trying to fight the Guardia Civil where he is shot and killed in action, by the gun of his own son. Tano realizes what he has done and is horrified. This leads to a song which later leads to a finale that sings about Tales as the cast come together for the curtains to close.

The musical ends and the cast is called on to the stage one by one, with the loudest applause going to Basilio who a lot of the girls found hot, and of course, the man himself, Kabesang Tales.

After the play and final thoughts

Ricky Lee actually attended the performance I watched and I remember so many people crowding around the actors to get their autographs. My sister bought one of Ricky Lee's book, his script writing guide "Trip to Quiapo" and had it signed but she genuinely can't find it anymore sadly. My sister also got the autograph of some of the actors and the director on that same book so I'm a little miffed that we can't find it.

I would discuss more things and even show off my old ticket but I'm pretty sure that I would end up doxxing myself if I speak any more details.

That's all I remember from it and I would love to say more or even discuss the songs but as you can see, I could barely remember them, with only maybe a solid grasp in about maybe four songs.

It's a shame that it doesn't have as much of an established release and media presence because despite that one glaring issue I had with the weird diwata scene, I quite enjoyed the musical and it remains one of the few that I actually got to experience live.

It isn't Les Miserables or Hamilton, but it's still a musical I'll probably fondly remember especially since El Filibusterismo is one of my favorite books of all time with the character of Kabesang Tales being one of the most interesting — a man of honor and virtue who slowly descends into extremist violence because society had failed him. It's sad to see this musical barely recognized and very little talked about today and I do hope that it will one day return to the stage.

Imagine this: the 2012 boys somehow find themselves in the Rise universe. At first, they're almost blinded by how bright everything is (they'll get used to it), so they go to the sewers. It isn't much, but it's better than being out there in the sun.

So, they try to find the place where the Rise gang lives. At first they search through the sewers, but since they're not there (new Lair baby) they go to the subway tunnels (Donatello does something and finds the place where their own Lair is but in the other universe or something idk). They find this weird, bright, different version of themselves. At first, of course, the Rise guys are like “what the FUCK”, but when they realize they're not a threat or anything they start to talk and blablabla.

The Mikeys would get along almost immediately. They'd probably draw together (even if Angelo draws better than Michaelangelo, he's still really good, so he's not sad or anything about it), and Angelo would have to teach Michelangelo how to cook after watching him try to make some kind of pizza smoothie? Like what's that. Angelo would teach Michaelangelo about Doctor Feelings, resulting on a scene where he says that he wants to try something Angeli taught him and, surprising everyone (who thought he was soft and shit), flips everyone off. Also, Doctor Feelings! And Angelo meeting Ice Cream Kitty.

At first, Raphael would be pretty weirded out by his younger (and bigger) counterpart. He's way too much of a softie, and he doesn't really think they'd get along. Well, Raph would probably notice it from the start, and he'd try to get him to talk to him while at the same time respecting his space. After a while, they'd realize how much they have in common, and Raphael would show how much of a softie he also is when he sees the amount of plushies Raph has. He's 100% jealous of that.

The Donnies would be really awkward when interacting with eachother. With Don's super advanced (and unrealistic) tech and Donatello's not so advanced (and more realistic)'s, their technology conversations would be kind of weird. That is, of course, until Donatello tells Don about the alien technology they have (at first he's like “oh fuck no the KRANG?” but then he'd be like “hey that's actually pretty cool”). He'd ramble about it and encourage Don to talk about the mystic thing. Then they'd try to find a way to combine them. The chaos...

And finally, THE LEOS!!! Leonardo wouldn't like Leon at first. Leon is so different from him it would be impossible to tell they're the same person were it not for the blue and the name. Leon wouldn't like Leonardo either. I feel like he'd be jealous about how good he is at leading and how his team listens to him everytime he talks (HC that he doesn't talk much because of his throat). Doctor Feelings would notice that and, with the help of Doctor Delicate Touch, they'd lock them in a room and force them to sort out their issues. Then, Leon finds that Leonardo is actually kind of jealous of him too because of how cheery he seems to be, and he even gets Leonardo to help him with leading, so hey! New ally! They'd ramble about Jupiter Jim and Space Heroes 24/7. Probably using sign language if Leonardo's throat hurts too much.
