Sped this up because they were playing a stall deck with final countdown. But somehow?? On countdown 19/20 I was able to win. I did not think that was going to happen with only 200 life points left but somehow I pulled it off (I think they forfeited out of anger cause how are you gonna stay for 24 turns and not let me just have the final blow you silly head)

But yeah I’ve never encountered a deck that punishes you & your opponent for summoning and activating cards before. I bet that deck gets them some easy wins if their opponent has no way to banish or get rid of spells and traps but not with me cause the heart of the cards are on MY SIDE. I AM THE ANIME PROTAG (only sometimes lololol)

been debating saying something about this for WEEKS but it's been nagging at me so:

we all remember that anonymous ad account? there was a big kerfuffle about it - personally I was very annoyed how the account would constantly bring me up and occasionally say wrong things about me, but I know other creators had issues with what was being anonymously said about them.

Months ago I did find out who was behind the blog - an audio drama creator I have never spoken to. They were a member of the AD Lab Discord Server, and at least two mods of that server knew about the blog and were helping anonad with their posts. The person behind anonad seemed to really look up to these mods, who had more experience in the industry. The creator of Regina Prime (referred to henceforth as J) might not be strictly "behind the blog," but they were helping with it, and I would guess manipulating anonad to push specific messages, knowing anonad looked up to them and using that to their advantage. This is why the account would constantly bring me up - while I've never spoken to the point person on this account, I've rubbed shoulders with the mods. It feels really weird that these people would post about me anonymously while I was chilling in their server.

It also rubs me the wrong way that these mods styled themselves as community leaders, "professors" of the audio drama lab, helpers of new creators... but behind the scenes were actively stoking the anonymous, public shit talking of other projects. I've kept quiet about it cause I'm tired of "drama," but I feel culpable having in this knowledge and not sharing it. I feel bad that new creators are finding community with and getting advice from people who are willing to turn around and hinder their crowdfunding campaigns or stoke personal rumors behind their backs.

And I mean this in the most literal sense - one of the creators who had their crowdfunding campaign posted about by the anonad account has a different project they're "incubating" with the AD lab. J read over and encouraged a post ripping into a crowdfund before it was posted, then a month later approved a project for development in the lab by the very same creator whose crowdfund she helped end. Yikes. it seems like the purpose of this all was to criticize other campaigns they saw as "competition" - which we in the community know doesn't actually exist - while using the person behind anonad for plausible deniability so they wouldn't get in trouble for tearing their colleagues down over anything they could.

I'm tired of J's facade. I'm tired of knowing that people who trust these mods have been anonymously hurt by them. I'm tired of J and HR (of Packhowl) threatening my friend in private and lying about her in public, all because they sent her screenshots revealing the mods' level of involvement with the blog. HR may not have been involved from the beginning, but she and the remaining mods are helping to keep everything quiet. The facade remains, the trust remains, the lies remain, and all the moderators are responsible.

This isn't one-off behavior from the people who were seemingly manipulating anonad, and I'm done hiding their actions for them. I've hesitated in part for so long because I feel that the "main" person behind the account should not be named, and I worry these moderators will name them to deflect blame. I hope they won't.

Books #1 & #2 (Nonfiction)

Ace by Angela Chen - Hello! Your friendly neighborhood asexual over here recommending that everybody read this book! It's such a good exploration of what it's like to navigate the world as an ace person and also the vast spectrum involved within asexuality.

Yoke by Jessamyn Stanley - Even if you've never done a single yoga pose in your life, I think you can gain something from this book. It's not a how-to yoga guide, but instead essays about her relationship to yoga, cultural appropriation within the community, fatness, colonization, capitalism, etc. It's fantastic and funny!

Books #3 & #4 (Excellent on Audio)

Six Stories by Matt Wesolowski - This fiction book (and the following books in the series) follows an investigative journalist who has a true crime podcast. The audiobook is full cast and it feels like you're following along to an actual podcast, but one you know you'll get a conclusion to. Highly recommend all of the books in this series on audio if you enjoy mystery/thrillers.

Where to Begin by Cleo Wade - The author narrates the audio version of this and her voice is like a balm to the soul. It feels a little bit like she’s a counselor guiding you through a thoughtful meditation. It’s short but it packs a punch.

Books #5 & #6 (Seasonally Appropriate)

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas - This is a YA book following a young trans boy, Yadiel, who wants to prove to his family that he's truly a brujo and attempts to summon the ghost of a murdered family member. Except he accidentally summons a classmate who has no idea how he died. Adventure and mystery ensues!

The Changeling by Victor Lavalle - I've always loved the folklore surrounding changelings, but Lavalle's writing just takes this to another level. This is set in NYC and he somehow managed to make the city feel like a character in itself. Super chilling, creepy read.

Books #7 & 8 (Graphic Novels)

I Hate Fairyland by Skottie Young - This is a 4 volume series about a little girl named Gertrude who is whisked away to Fairyland, where she's told she must go on a quest to find the key to unlock the door back to her world. Turns out she sucks at quests and 30 years pass and she still hasn't found the key. Now she's stuck in the body of a six year old and just murders everything she comes across. The contrast of bright, happy colors vs. the murderous, jaded Gertrude is hilarious and wonderful.

The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen - This is a standalone graphic novel following Tien, the son of Vietnamese immigrants, as he navigates how to come out to his parents. The art in this is wonderful and the use of color to define when we're in the past, the present, or a fairy tale was done so beautifully. A gorgeous read!

Books #9 & #10 (Books from Favorite Authors I Will Read Anything From)

A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers - This book/series follows a tea monk who encounters a robot looking for the answer to the question, "what do people need?" It's cozy and comforting. I've read every Becky Chambers book published and will continue to do so. The way she weaves hope into everything she writes is phenomenal.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Steifvater - This series owns my soul. I don't even know how to pitch this other than it has a magical forest, a found family, the slowest of slow burn queer love, and Maggie Steifvater's atmospheric writing. Maggie is another author that I will read pretty much anything from (the werewolves weren't my cup of tea so I can't claim to have read all her books).

Any recommendations for a person trying to learn Greek?

Yes, definitely! I also wrote a post on learning Modern Greek online.

I am not sure what your native language is or if you know any other languages. I studied German before Greek, and so I found Greek grammar very easy in comparison.

To start with, it's slightly more complex than Spanish for English native speakers since it uses a case system (changing noun, adjective, and article endings). But I found the patterns fairly regular and easy to remember! So it is not stressful at all. And since many words are similar between English and Greek, you will find it easy to pick up vocabulary.

For learning, this was what I did:

A1/A2

Timeframe: 9-12 Months, Depending on how fast you go

Tools:

Duolingo: 5-6 lessons/1 crown a day, or 30 minutes

Rosetta Stone: 3 lessons a day, or 30 minutes

Language Transfer Greek: 1-2 lessons a day, 10-20 minutes

LingQ: Free reading, when chilling out

When you finish Duolingo and Rosetta Stone materials, watch Eisai To Tairi Mou on Youtube. The wonderful George has subbed the whole series in English.

For textbooks, I used Take Off In Greek. I did 1 lesson a week after completing Duolingo/Rosetta/etc. This takes about 3 months. There is an audio CD, which you may need to buy separately. I'm not sure.

I also started tutoring while working on the textbook. I meet with Georgia on Italki, who is amazing.

B1/B2

I'm still working on this. 😉

Colloquial Greek is a good textbook here. It's very fast, though. Lots of vocabulary. Routledge also has a Modern Greek Reader, which is advanced but quite good.

But if you want in-depth resources, look at "publications" from Omilo.

Lydia is a good review of A1/A2, all dialogues. They also have workbooks on verbs, Greek music, podcasts, etc. Their B1/B2 book is Fiyame, and it's all in Greek.

At this point, I would work through either Colloquial or Fiyame while working with a tutor 1-2x a month or more.

I am not on this server, but I follow and interact with many people on it. I also use Greek as my default language. 😊

University of Athens

I want to point out that there is an affordable learning course from the University of Athens. It is an online course. They have multiple language courses, but they have a good deal.

Their basic level course is 150 EURO, but you can get it for less. If you buy one of their culture courses, many of which are 100/120 EURO, you can get the Greek course free. The culture courses are taught in English.

I hope this is all helpful! I find Modern Greek rather fun and easy to digest. So far, the grammar is not very difficult. And many of the A1/A2 resources are free or low-cost. Rosetta Stone can be bought for $167, I think, and be used for multiple languages.

Media Recs

Fashioning a Fop by Damien Locke- Short fiction. An 18th century tale of a trans man discovering himself through dressing in men’s clothing for the first time. This piece is fucking spectacular, so gorgeously written and with such wonderful 1700s-style prose, very hot, very fun!

What's in the Tea? by Achilles King - Short fiction. 18+ Erotica. Cis M/M and Cis M/Trans M. This is a gorgeous little piece playing with massage and the drugging effects of a particular tea, and I love the power play in this one.

The Music Man (1962, dir. Morton DaCosta) - A musical! I've been in the mood for musicals the past few days, and I enjoyed this one a lot more than I expected - a lot of the music has really stuck with me, I love the brass band stuff and the rapid patter pace of the show, especially because I love a conman. With that said, Marian Paroo is a ridiculous name for a woman - the librarian love interest should be a man. I also watched and enjoyed Sweet Charity (1969, dir. Bob Fosse), and I never realised Big Spender was from this show! So that was fun.

I had a gay movie marathon with my boyfriend, Lewis, so first we watched A League Of Their Own (1992, dir. Penny Marshall) and Thelma and Louise (1991, dir. Ridley Scott). These are both great films, obviously - A League of Their Own is a semi-biographical story about the first female baseball league in the USA during the war, and the second is a crime drama with two besties/lovers stuck in an escalating spiral after one of them shoots an attempted rapist. Lewis was surprised that Thelma and Louise is actually gay, so just FYI, it really is actually gay! It's not a happy ending and it's not uncomplicated, but Thelma and Louise are such great characters, and I love them a lot.

We also watched a favourite of mine, which is Gods and Monsters (1998, dir. Bill Condon), starring Ian McKellen and Brendan Fraser. If you love sexy manipulative old gay men fucking with the heads of younger mostly straight men who don't know how to deal with being the object of a man's desire, who are terrified of queerness on so many levels, but are also drawn to the novel and new? Yeah, baby. This is the flick for you.

Goetia (2016) - This is a point-and-click videogame that I played on PS4, although I also have it on PC, and I just finished it today. If you're interested in demonology and you love a 20th century haunted house, this is a short game with some great character writing and a really engaging mystery - a lot of it is pretty fucking creepy, and while the ending didn't entirely land for me, I enjoyed the game enough that I do want to recommend it. This is fucking difficult as a puzzle game, though, so definitely keep a notepad and pen handy.

We also caught the Super Mario Bros. (2023, dir. Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath) movie, and it was grand - it was honestly very well-paced, funny, and they did a lot of creative stuff with the source material, plus I'm obviously disgustingly horny for Bowser at all times, so it was good food for my libido.

With that said, it was a bit too aggressive with the heterosexuality, and the racial politics of the whole thing are... Fucking bad. Like, there's a lot to unpack there that I'd need a whole essay to pick apart, and as a white dude I really don't know that it's my place - there's always been some racism in the franchise, like the British studio's addition of a lot of anti-Black coding in making Donkey Kong 64, but just the whole vibe of the Mushroom Kingdom's worship of Princess Peach is like... Weird.

And lastly, I watched and loved The Wicker Man (1973, dir. Robin Hardy), and I have an extensive review below.

do the daily and weekly tasks!: these give rewards each day/week that will help you in card leveling, overall player leveling, and collecting s-chips. sometimes events happen which add new tasks to do for certain rewards so like, basically whenever you see an Exclamation Point Icon anywhere, check it out! theres gonna be stuff to do and rewards to get from it

level up your cards!: if im remembering my own experience starting out, i recall that the debate power increase through the main story was a little bit steep in the beginning jHVKSJHDF. i used to get on by just fine with the EXP from debates itself leveling cards, but that quickly didnt give my deck enough juice. level em up with oracles so u can smoothly go thru the main story :D

take ur time exploring not just the story but also just the sheer amount of other stuff going on in the game: i was overwhelmed when i started, and i started on this game's Release. there was Less Stuff. idk how it must be for ppl coming in now, when theres More Stuff omg. but it's chill, take ur time, theres a bunch of neat stuff to discover

(idk how intuitive/already obvious these might already be, but when i started out i had no idea how these types of games worked so it took me a while to realize there were MORE STORIES JHSDJFH so i'll mention these tips too, aka tips i wish i knew in august of 2021, HAHA)

read card stories/content: every card you have that is not an R card (so the SSR, SR, and MR), has either a 6 part story in them to read or 2 audio messages for you to listen to and they are Wonderful. dont sweat it tho if u dont have a card and u wanna know its content, by this point, nearly everything is recorded on youtube so u can easily watch what u dont have!

play the boys' personal stories!: aside from the main story (which are the cases and investigations) each nxx boy has personal stories u can find by going to Ur Phone In The Game -> Click On Guy Of Choice -> Lower Right Corner.

if ur interested in nxx team plots outside of the main story, check out past events and their plots on yt!: the event plots are a Treasure Trove of interesting case stories And full ensemble cast interactions. i love this game the best tbh when i see the whole team interacting with each other, so i adore event plots. sadly, nearly all of the events that are done cannot be accessed anymore to newcomers in the game itself, but they can still be watched on yt. buuut thats just nearly all of the events which leads me to my next tip that rlly isnt a tip but simply just my personal recommendation as an intense enjoyer of this game---

download and play through the Mysteries of the Lost Gold event: the Lost Gold event originally ran through september of 2021, but it's been made available permanently as downloadable content in the game no matter when you start playing!! i highly recommend this event. it's by far still my favorite event in this whole game (everything from interesting plot/case to fun gameplay to delicious characterization, I REALLY LOVE LOST GOLD OK!! THIS IS A LOST GOLD STAN ZONE!!)

I'm very much a "do whatever you want as long as you're not hurting anybody" kind of person but some things just need to be left in middle school and be more chill is one of them

no exactly like do what u love and love what u do etc and i hope ur happy but get better taste period . not to drop some random oliver lore but i was one of the first people to ever read the be more chill script back when there was only a script and an audio bootleg and i was a fan THEN (i was 13-14) and then after like a few months i realized it was bad and lame LOL like i was 14 and i got that it was bad grow up.....

but also at the same time i don't wanna hate on gay people as a whole i don't think we're all cringe and certainly not everyone at my job is but i feel a certain level of just not being able to relate to them at all. it's always the corniest gay jokes and ones that have been said a million times that aren't funny anymore and i'm glad they make each other laugh but i just fake laugh along and pretend i think ur "ha ha gotta go back into the closet!" Metal gear mania day:13

Slow day today had a combo of I fell asleep in my chair while playing plus a section that was tricky as I had to listen for a sound cue with a monitor that does not have audio and finally towards the closing I experience a potentially fatal hardware issue depending on weather it is what I think it is basically I’m at the shadow Moses section which is blowing my mind by the way but as soon as I try to crawl through a vent or u set the truck my game freezes it seems to be an over heating issue and hopefully with a full night to cool down it’ll be up and running for tomorrow which is the final day I really hope the disc isn’t scratched so close to the end good news is at least for tomorrow the audio problem will be fixed as I’m borrowing a display with speakers yaaay yippie as far as In game stuff bro we are under attack Meryl’s play genuinely could not have gone worse and snake is just taking so many L’s if he survives the game I hope his next two months are the most chill time of anyone’s life my guy is getting put through it nice to see EVA and learn that pretty much everyone you interacted with as well as played in mgs 3 were straight up evil as well as mostly dead it gives me this grim fascination with the big boss games knowing that almost every character is dead or made the world so much worse cool stuff. Can’t say the same about the Europe level a really annoying tailing sequence that in all fairness is proabably not that bad in most circumstances and then a fine turret section an ok boss fight such is life a friend I Was talking to said that as the story gets better the gameplay takes a bit of a hit

And as of right now that tracks to conversation with Meryl at the beginning of the level was just so beautifully gutting and the same can be said of the sequence at the end also why’d they make the pooping bandit kinda hot.another thing fucks going on with Naomi? you come into my plane teach me and otacons adopted daughter to cook eggs and then immediately turn heel again. Anyway gotta get good and rested for the final stretch tomorrow

Work is out for a bit...

Well, with work being closed down for the last week things have been chill around here... and no that isn't a joke about the damn wave of cold that been hitting the north east US.

And because of this I have put more hours then I would like to think about into World of Warcraft as we where in the time period of trying to get set up for the start of the raiding season and the many other smaller task that needed to be finished. In WoW I have two characters maxed leveled and one at level 66 (would be going a lot faster if I wasnt' pretty much just leveling them for leather working and skinning).

So those characters are kind if in the, I need to slowly chip away at things until they get the upgrades to make them good for end game if I even want to try and get them there. In discord RP, well there are a few things that I want to do but really I kind of hit the point where there isn't a lot of drive to really Role Play the things out so much as I want plot to happen and some of the older plot to wrap up. I get that the game can only go so fast but still.... some of this plot been sitting around for months and very little been done because as soon as someone starts some movement they leave. It's just a pain in the ass.... Thankfully, due to someone rank challange I was able to give a small wrap up in some of the smaller mini plot things I put out, shame that I got like two ideas coming down the pipeline.

As for the yearly goals, I finished listening to the last audio book that I needed to for the year. So that task is thankfully finished. For Games, I have finished 14 games, and had bought 10 this year with half of them being games that where counted as finished this year. (Forever games count after at least 10 hours because I could play WoW, OW2, SIM 4 forever). I also have more games in my computer but I need to get myself out of the loop of playing WoW so that maybe I can finish Bastion before the year is out. And writing, well. I was behind 4 post at the start of the month, once this post is fully typed out that leaves me at only one more that need to be written for the month and that will likly be done after xmas and before the new year. So it seem that things have fallen mostly into place like I needed them to so far. Now that I gotten this all types up, I think I going to put in my super warm PJ, get into bed and eather put some holiday music on, or pick the next game that I need to load up into my PS4 in the hopes that maybe I will remember to play it.

One that comes to mind right away is the Omori, but I already talked about that, and don't wanna repeat myself too much.

Does The End from Minecraft Volume Beta count? I think it does. The End is a song that plays in the last place you'll visit in Minecraft.. The End dimension, of course. The track has the leitmotif of Sweden, one of the normal Overworld tracks, underneath it's almost corrupted-sounding audio. When wandering the End islands for the first time, hearing this music sent chills through me. It's almost like the game was telling me "You're far away from home, but you're one bad jump away from being thrown back."

Fire Emblem Three Houses uses it's main theme as a leitmotif a LOT. (around 1:10 in.) Though that's the modern Fire Emblem games in general I'd say, I just love Three Houses' main theme a lot. The place you likely know this leitmotif from is The Edge of Dawn (Seasons of Warfare)! Though it also appears in Fódlan Winds, The Apex of the World and a handful more. Its main theme is quite literally its main theme, showing up nearly everywhere as long as you're listening for it.

Aaaaand here's my excuse to talk about Xenoblade! Within Xenoblade Chronicles 2, the game's main theme, Where We Used To Be, is hidden within a plethora of the game's tracks. It plays in a total of 29 of the game's songs, and I can't say I even caught them most of the time. A video here talks at great lengths about it and talks about it better than I ever could. Please, give it a watch.

Finally, I'll end it on a series I haven't talked about yet. Kirby! Specifically for today, Kirby Planet Robobot. The title theme, Bright Spinning Planet, appears in a lot of the game's tracks. Within the opening cutscene, the world map, and even in the first level. However, my favorite example is within the game's equivalent of a superboss, hidden at the end of the True Arena - Vagrant Keepsake of Oblivion. Yes that is the name of the track in a Kirby game. The plot of it makes it even worse, this businessman named Haltmann saw Kirby's planet, landed upon it to suck it dry of all its resources while simultaneously turning it into a robotic hellscape. All for the purpose of taking control of this giant space-clock-thing that grants wishes Star Dream, (which is basically a reincarnation of Galactic Nova from Kirby Superstar), so he can wish his daughter back into his life. Turns out this plan backfires, and the computer that is Star Dream takes a big homf and eats the man's consciousness, and this music plays as you're killing the literal heart of the computer to freee Haltmann's soul. Welcome to Kirby lore!

Film Narrative 2 - Filming Day

Filming day! I always feel an intense feeling of anxiety before a shooting day. It weirdly never is usually about all the possible things that could go wrong or anything like that. I always worry that if I try to take on too much of a creative role, I’ll end up embarrassing myself by showing everyone else that I actually have no talent. It’s something I really need to kick as soon as possible because I don’t think it’s ideal for my future in this course and also my future professionally. I need to push myself forward and just decide to take on scriptwriting or directing responsibilities because I’m in the same boat as everyone else and my skill level is just as good as theirs. Next time I’m putting myself forward for director!

Anyway, sorry about that needless rambling! We initially had two actors that were known by other members of the group but one of them backed out very close to filming day so as producer, I scrambled to find a replacement. I posted a casting call in some facebook acting pages hoping for the best. One post was rejected because I mentioned we were looking for someone older and that might end up being offensive but everything turned out alright in the end. A fantastic actor, Ciaran ended up responding who seemed very interested in the premise. We chatted for a bit about his history with religion and how he used to be in a church choir so he was very interested in going forward. I sorted out his transport with the trains from Glasgow and the taxi to the filming location and he was set to go!

I wanted to make sure we had everything equipment wise ready for the shoot, so I went along a few hours before the planned shooting time to pick the equipment up as the storeroom would have been closed. I just chilled for a couple of hours. I took out my notebook to try and do some film history research but the only research I ended up doing was a little thing called watching Breaking Bad. I’m so tempted to talk about it in a blog post some day.

Fast forward a couple of hours later, the crew shows up but disaster! Ciaran got himself into some trouble and missed the train he was supposed to get but it was all ok. I just had to reschedule the taxi, but it meant we had more time to set everything up.

We got all set up and were almost ready to go. 2nd big disaster. The mix pre was only recording through the left channel so there was a bit of a scramble to try and fix that before shooting which was actually really difficult as it was dark and I had no idea how to fix it. I managed to find out how to reset it and finally we were ready to go. It probably was a good thing as Ciaran hadn’t managed to get around to learning his lines. 

One thing that I’ve experienced on many of the shoots so far is a struggle for the actors to learn the lines. That is in no way a complaint on the actor’s part, they have all been absolute stars. It has showed me the importance of contacting the actors as early as possible. That way we can get the actors together for some rehearsal which I think I’m going to properly implement on all my future shoots. It’s important that I realise that the actor’s all have their own lives and are working for free so I need to respect that and it’s the responsibility of the crew to make sure things go smoothly. 

A rule for any future shoots. Anytime someone suggests filming outside in the middle of winter, take a hard stand and say no! Poor Calvin, who played the son had to be shirtless for most of the shoot. It must have been an absolutely miserable experience for him, but he was a champ and stuck with it. The wind and rain was a bit of a pain but luckily the audio turned out alright and basically everything went fairly smoothly. 

I quite liked the lighting we ended up with. A tad bit difficult as they weren’t the brightest and it was in the middle of the night but I think the dark lighting really improved the whole atmosphere. Yat did a fantastic job on the camera and got some great shots! I'm too keen to take on a sound role again if I'm being honest as I think I'm more into the directing/cinematography but I'm glad I got that experience. Although, holding that boom pole for a significant amount of time is an absolute nightmare!

We couldn’t film for very long as Ciaran had to get a train back to Glasgow so we didn’t get some of the shots that we wanted but overall I’m very happy with the work our group worked on together.

Final disaster of the night which wasn’t really a disaster but it was to me! I had to rush to leave to take Ciaran to the train station as we didn’t want him to be alone in the big city so in my rush I left my jacket and bag behind! There wasn’t anything important in that bag and I got it back but honestly, I think it was the biggest disaster of the night!

Sooo here it is! The Winter Gift Exchange for @cryptixmoth! Sooo I ended up going with Aaron and Mistletoe for the prompt! Aaron doesn’t get a lot of love so I thought it would be fun to write for him. I hope you enjoy!

also also, this is def set before Aaron and Smartass move in with each other. So before his hot boi winter audio lol.

The holidays were rough for office workers. Everything is getting prepared for the end of the year, blackout season making it impossible to ask for days off, and obviously copious amounts of overtime. Needless to say, Aaron was exhausted. Exhausted and irritated.

It had been over a week since he had seen his partner, and with the holidays closing in…well it was only helping to make his mood all the worse. Even with how much better their new job was, it was still shit when it came to overworking their employees on the holidays. What really annoyed him about it was that this was their first holiday season as a couple, and he had actually wanted to spend…SOME time with them. Yet it looked like the only day he would get to see them was fucking Christmas, which was of course the only day they would both have off. Since businesses only seemed to recognize that as the holiday worthy of getting time off for during December, despite the plethora of holidays that happen within the month. Another thing that irritated Aaron. 

His shift today had seemed to drag on. It seemed that even though he wasn’t Oliver’s boss, the guy still kept coming to him for help. It was nice to know that he at least seemed competent to the younger employee, but it also added more onto Aaron’s already full plate. Which was exactly why he was leaving work at 11:30 at night, grumbling all the way to his car. 

Once inside his rather rundown vehicle, he let his head rest on his steering wheel. Allowing the exhaustion to take over for a moment, yet he couldn’t ignore the little voice in his head telling him that he couldn’t just sleep in his car in the parking lot, despite how desperate for sleep he was. So, using every ounce of willpower in his aching body he pushed himself back up. Taking his phone out of his pocket and searching for the familiar ‘Smartass’ with a heart emoji next to it (they had yet to notice and he wasn’t about to tell them just how mushy he was), messaging them that he was finally headed home and that he hoped they had a good night. Knowing them, they were either still at work just as he had been or they had already passed out from the similar levels of holiday stress. 

The ride home was loud, Aaron had rolled down his windows to let the cold chill freeze him into staying conscious while he turned on some of the heavier songs he had saved on his phone, using the insane guitars and vocals to assist where the cold would fail on it’s own. By the time he pulled into his apartment complex it was well past midnight, and he honestly couldn’t remember most of the ride home. He was fairly surprised that he hadn’t run himself off the road, but also pretty proud of his autopilot that got him home safely.

His tensed body struggled to get up the stairs, cursing the three flights that he was forced to climb just to be able to go to bed. Next time he moved, he and smartass would get an apartment on the first floor. He was absolutely determined about that. His brain seemed to catch up just as the thought left him. Moving in with Smartass? That would be a BIG step in their relationship. Sure, he had already given them a key to his apartment, and they had a key to his. But there was a difference in being able to visit and actually LIVING with someone. He couldn’t say he would mind moving in with them, in fact he felt all warm just thinking about it, but that was a thought for future Aaron to process. Current Aaron only wanted sleep.

Slipping the key from the lock, he shoved the door open. Wincing a bit as the knob slammed against the wall, he hoped that it didn’t leave a mark or dent or something of that sort. As he was just about to check the wall, closing the door to get a better look, he realized that something was off. The lights were on, and not just in the entryway but in the living room and the kitchen as well. And he sure as hell wasn’t the one who left them on. 

“Fucking hell…” He muttered, not bothering to take his shoes off as he tried to get to the bottom of the mystery of the lit apartment. Taking quiet steps towards the kitchen, fully prepared to just give whoever was in his home…whatever they wanted as long as they left quickly and let him sleep. But when he rounded the corner his eyes met the familiar frame of his partner, who for some reason was standing in front of his stove…cooking.

“Alright, you ass. Mind telling me why you didn’t let me know you were coming over tonight?” All of the tension drained from his body as he realized he wasn’t getting robbed. He was a bit irritated, a little heads up would have been nice. Also would have saved him the minor case of heart failure. 

Of course, Smartass didn’t look the least bit apologetic. In fact, they cocked one of their hands on their hip with a brow raised in his direction. That smug grin on their face that always made him want to kiss them until they couldn’t be a smug little shit anymore. Quickly, he put a halt to that line of thought, he needed to focus. 

Something strange he did notice, or thought he noticed…it might have been the sleep deprivation getting to him, was the way their eyes looked. Instead of looking at him directly, they were looking up at the ceiling above him, but slightly to the left. But as soon as he noticed, their eyes were back on him and he thought he might have just imagined it.

“Well, you might not have heard of this new thing. It’s called a surprise,” Aaron felt his eye twitch, he honestly should have expected that response. After all, he hadn’t given them the nickname ‘smartass’ for no reason, “and I figured since my lovely boyfriend was going to be home super late, so he was probably going to skip dinner. So I took it upon myself, like the wonderful partner I am, to come cook.” Aaron couldn’t even deny it. He was absolutely planning on going to bed without eating. And he was extremely grateful that they had thought about him. It brought his thoughts back to where they had previously been. Moving in together. 

If they lived together then this could be a normal occurrence, hell they won’t have even gone this long without seeing each other. He would get to sleep in their arms at night, they would be able to cook for each other on regular occurrences, and the thought of having someone waiting for him at home…well it was nice. 

Letting out a long sigh, Aaron ran a hand through his hair. Making his way across the kitchen he wrapped his arms around their waist, prompting them to pull him closer, before plopping his head down on their shoulder. 

“Thank you.” It was soft, and smartass probably wouldn’t have heard it if he hadn’t been right next to their ear. Chuckling softly at him, they pressed a kiss to the top of his head. 

“You’re getting soft on me again.” The teasing tone of their voice was half-hearted, as they could tell how tired he was.

The ‘dinner’ went by fairly quick, Aaron eating as much as he could while Smartass cleaned up the mess they had made in the kitchen. Small talk was shared between the two, but conversations about work had been left at the door. They mostly were checking in on each other, asking about how the week had been and seeing if either of them had gotten anything done outside of their jobs. It was quaint, and domestic, and it only confirmed Aaron’s suspicions that…maybe living with them wouldn’t be so bad. 

Just like before though, Aaron noticed Smartass’s eyes straying. This time towards the chair he usually sat in at his small dinner table. He didn’t know why he didn’t bother sitting there tonight, this chair was just the first he saw and he was honestly too tired to care about sitting in his normal seat. Might as well make use of ALL of the chairs at the table at least once.

Eventually they moved to his bedroom, changing into sleepwear for the night. Usually they would have stayed up a bit later just to spend time with each other. Unfortunately, they both still had work the next day, so getting as much rest as they could was basically essential. As Aaron exited the bathroom that connected to his room, he noticed his Smartass staring at him and snickering. Well..staring above him, again just like had been doing since he got home.

“What?” The word left him a little more forcefully than he would have liked, but as usual they didn’t seem too bothered by it. Simply pushing theirself off of his bed and practically sauntering over to him. Aaron’s eyes narrowed suspiciously at them, unsure of what exactly they were planning. Once they stood in front of him, they simply pointed up. 

With quite a bit of hesitation, Aaron lifted his eyes from his partner only to find…was that Mistletoe hanging above him? Going to look back down, ready to question them about why mistletoe was hanging in his apartment, they cut him off. Capturing his lips in a kiss that took his breath away. All thoughts of the randomly appearing mistletoe vanished and all he could think about was just how much he loved kissing them. It wasn’t like he heard bells or any of that romance movie nonsense, but he could feel their passion. They made him feel wanted, loved, and honestly that’s all he could ask for. 

When they pulled away, they once again wore that familiar shit-eating grin. Responding to the question he hadn’t gotten the chance to ask.

“You usually go to…really specific spots around the place. So, I put up mistletoe in those spots so that when you stand there, I can kiss you for no reason.” They explained proudly, as if they were absolutely brilliant for thinking of such a thing. For just noticing the spots that Aaron happened to make a habit of standing in. Now, he had mentioned to them before how smart they were but he had to be honest now. “Tonight though, you seemed to want to make it difficult. In fact you even missed two whole kisses, for shame.”

“That’s so dumb,” he retorted. Their grin dropped for a split second, forming a pout as he continued, “You could always kiss me whenever you wanted. You don’t need a plant to tell you that, idiot.” 

And then once again their lips were pressed against one another, moving together as he proved his previous point.

I Have Elected to Ignore Midnight's Death

Polarmare's First Day

It was the first year Kenta would be teaching at U.A. A longtime friend of hers requested to take up the open teaching position, and who was Polarmare going to deny a change of scenery?

Besides, her sister lived in Japan and was elated to know that the Fuyuhito sisters were getting back together so that was the housing situation solved in under five minutes.

U.A. paid good as well which was good for a single mother like Kenta. She adored Seko with all her heart from the first time they met in Japan two years ago when she saved him from prison. Sure the paperwork was a bitch, but Seko loved the opportunity to meet so many different heroes.

So they packed their bags, and headed off to Japan where she was reunited with her sister.

The day after they arrived she made sure her paperwork was sorted by the Hero Safety Commission, then made sure to pick up Seko for her tour at UA.

There she met Nezu, who seemed just as crazy has he had been over the phone and her fellow coworkers.

She took an instant liking to Powerloader and Snipe as they bonded over creating weapons. Vlad King and Ectoplasm seemed chill too, and it was nice to see other dedicated teachers.

Midnight was cheering about another woman on the staff, though seemed to deflate when Kenta snipped her sexual flirting at the bud.

Present Mic was loud, but reminded Kenta of a friend in America so the familiarity was nice.

It was interesting meeting All Might after seeing his last stand on the news, but Kenta hoped they would be able to get along even if he seemed like a bumbling mess half of the time.

Recovery Girl was alright, a bit jaded but it was hard to find a hero so old who wasn't.

Aizawa seemed like someone she needed to keep her eye on, his knee jerk reaction upon learning she was an international hero was hostility while he worked under the impression she was a spotlight hero.

With a swing of her axe, and a clarification of the fact she was a Neighborhood Hero who worked mostly under Rescue and Underground terms, he simmered down real quick.

The General Ed teachers seemed chill, and Kenta hoped she would be able to grab some drinks with them after a long day of work.

Seko loved every one of the them, and was excited by the prospect of their quirks though Kenta made sure to cover his eyes and ears whenever Midnight was in the room.

After final arrangements with Nezu, she was given the dates of the entrance exams. The Fuyuhito family left in good spirits.

The day of the Management Entrance Exam came around, and Kenta came in her formal hero uniform. She took a seat beside Snipe and Powerloader, and was introduced as Polarmare.

Polarmare watched as potential students came in to present one by one, and she made notes. At the end of the day after helping the potential support students present Polarmare was happy with her picks.

It wasn't over though as she spent a while in her new office she looked at each students history, made a few calls, and at the end picked out a good sixty for the first years.

Sixty may seem extreme, but there were many parts of management and business so they wouldn't all be in one class.

She went home to tend to her son, and went to see the sights with her family.

The day of the hero entrance exams arrived, and Polarmare took a seat in the viewing room. She studied the motions of the potential students, their interactions, and was pleasantly surprised to see Nezu took her suggestion of making Rescue Points public and hiding a new type of points known as Cooperation Points.

The big scale robot had been toned down a bit, and at the end Polarmare had a few qualms but didn't have any outward complaints.

Eventually, the first day of the school year came around and Polarmare did her introductory presentation. She explained each branch of management and business, the schedules, and sent them on a tour with Snipe of the business building.

While that occured, she had a meeting with the votes on representatives and outlined what she expected of each of them. She was pleasantly surprised to find them ready to meet the challenge, and was off once again.

She let the students spend the first week exploring the changes she made, and getting used the renovated building. She didn't see the need to challenge them too much considering they were in a new environment.

At the end of the day, Polarmare made her way to the Conference Room and took her place. The first thing she noticed was a lack of Gen Ed teachers present, which concerned her.

Snipe and Powerloader seemed surprised to see her there, and it was Snipe who leaned over.

"The Management teacher usually doesn't come to these meetings as they center primarily around the hero course."

Polarmare took in the words before responding, "Business and Management is a huge part of heroics so I believe I should be present for any meetings regarding the Hero Course."

Snipe nodded, and straightened back up.

After a couple more looks, the rest of the teachers settled down to prepare the meeting.

Nezu got up on his little podium, and smiled. "Welcome to the first hero course meeting of the year. Since we have a new teacher with us this year, I would love to hear her thoughts on how she plans on interacting with the hero course."

"First, may I record the meeting?" Polarmare asked. "I work better if I have audio to listen to afterwards."

A few of the teachers gave each other looks, but Nezu nodded.

Polarmare tapped her recorder before she stood up. "I plan on calling the second year students to the business building to discuss their media presence. With permission from you and their gaurdians, I want to make sure they have profiles set up on Hero Watch. It would be good for them to interact with other heroes, and it will open internship and work study opportunities for them."

Nezu hummed, "Permission granted, you may start as soon as you can."

"Once I get their gaurdains approval," Polarmare resaid with a firm stare. "I shall send out the email tonight, and set up conferences if needed."

Polarmare noticed some of the teachers looking at her in confusion, but she made her notes.

The rest of the teachers went around, and Polarmare made her notes. Admittedly more on their body language then what they have to say.

The last person to talk was Aizawa. He stood up and gathered a couple of papers.

"All of the expulsion forms have been filled out." Aizawa passed them around towards Nezu.

Polarmare slammed down her hand before they could be passed the final length. She turned them over to look through them.

"Polarmare, may I ask what you are doing?" Aizawa asked through gritted teeth.

"You know Eraserhead, this seems quite light for expulsion papers. I see a distinct lack of reference to any evidence or record of you meeting with the student to discuss the expulsion."

"What are you talking about?" Aizawa asked.

"According to the Student Rights, the student should be made aware of their expulsion with any evidence before they are expelled." Polarmare looked over to Aizawa, "I assume this is the first time Nezu has seen these, so I also assume he has been expelling students based on your word without a meeting or evidence."

Aizawa stared Polarmare down, "U.A. does not work on the regular rules schools are legally allowed to abide by."

Polarmare shifted the papers in her hand, "Actually, Student Rights apply to all schools. If this is the case, and you have been expelling like this, it is a miracle you haven't been sued."

"Nezu handles the lawsuits," Snipe said.

"Ah, that explains that. Let me clarify, it is a miracle that someone who outranks you hasn't caught on and sued you." Polarmare adjusted her posture, "Now what is your reasoning?"

"The students show a lack of potential," Aizawa stated matter of factly.

Polarmare sighed deeply. "Tell me Eraserhead, how do you measure a concept as abstract as 'Potential'."

"A series of trials," Aizawa stated.

"Yeah, I saw those trials being performed. I noticed that they are all physical. Are you saying you are measuring potential on how physically experienced your students are?"

Midnight giggled.

Polarmare shot a glare before turning back to Aizawa, "I am going to look through these students and read out loud their quirks."

"This is uneccesary-"

"Marinette, this quirk allows the user to control those with human intelligence or faux human intelligence like robots as though they are simply puppets. Hmm, I don't see how this could apply to something like a grip test or ball throw. Though this could be a way to give heroes confidence or maybe even to control villains. This student sounds like a great Underground or Neighborhood Hero if they so desired.

"That is only-"

"Oh! Gnaw. This one is interesting. This quirk gives the user sharp appendages as long as they are made out of keratin on some level. Can't think of how this would help a sit-up, but imagine there was a super strong net that could be useful. This student sounds like an amazing Rescue Hero if they so desired."

"Two-"

"Slowdown, a quirk that allows the user to slow down anything that is moving. That is amazing on its own, and if they know how to dismantle robots in the time allowed they have to be some sort of mechanical genius! They could go down any hero path they wanted and he so successful. A shame I can't think of how this would help on any trials unless they were sabotaging others. Were they sabotaging others?"

"No," Aizawa said.

"This is a bad trend Eraserhead," Polarmare warned. "Of course if you insist on wanting to expell them, then why don't you allow me work out some private study transfers. I know what, like five? Ten? Twenty? Probably like something hundred pros who are on the waiting list that would love to work with some of these quirks."

Aizawa glared at her.

"Then again why is there such a focus on their quirks? Oh! I know, it is because you don't care how they act if Mineta and Bakugou is anything to go by." Polarmare said. "Don't think I've noticed the large amount of tapes and complaints filled out regarding them."

Polarmare looked up at Aizawa, "I'm just saying there is some good evidence here to create a good quirk discrimination and abuse of power case. Unfortunately for you, I happen to be friends with a lot of lawyers and reporters who don't exactly love UA and would love to get their hands on this information."

"Nezu!" Aizawa shouted.

Nezu who was blankly smiling throughout the whole exchange looked at Aizawa. "What? She has a point, and we can not take another hit like this to our reputation. Polarmare you have permission to disband the expulsions."

"Thank you."

"Oh shit," Present Mic muttered but it was audible due to the complete silence of the room."

"With that, I believe this meeting shall be adjourned. I employ you all to spend some times to reevaluate your students."

Polarmare collected her notes, and looked over the expulsion sheets. She wasn't lying before, she was sure she could find some good mentors for these students depending on what they want to do. She'll have to add those meetings to her calendar. Maybe Seko had some ideas, and her sister would probably snatch up one of th-

"Eraserhead, what do I owe the pleasure?" She turned her head to see his eyes aflame with red.

"I have been managing my class like this for years, and I do not appreciate you coming in here and dictating what I can and can not do."

"I do not dictate it, the law does." Polarmare sighed as she looked at his eyes. "Cancelling my quirk is useless considering it isn't and offensive quirk," She pointed out.

Aizawa let his capture scarf wrap back around his neck as he blinked. He stared at her with narrowed eyes.

"Bakugou is a perfectly fine student, and I do not see why you brought him up-"

"The boy has a record of telling people to die, I don't care if it is his thing it fucks with your head. Not to mention the physical assault and berating he does, because unlike you I read the complaints."

"The complaints are useless, I judge my students without any prior knowledge."

Polarmare raised an eyebrow, "Does that include background checks because I thought UA prided themselves on those."

Aizawa gritted his teeth.

"If that is all, I need to get home to my family."

I really love the poly headcanons they are so sweet.... (or don't but that's part of it and i think the tot boys+MC deserve all the love the world has to give).

But, liking it or not, our 4 beloved boys are kinda complicated (that's what makes them perfect). Plus I never thought about how people get in poly relationships. So i was thinking, how do you think they all get into a polyrelationship together?

hi, two anons!! im glad you guys liked my nxx team polycule stuff!! i'll answer these in one go, my "headcanon" (in quotes because i think this kinda turned into a character analysis/minific of sorts HAHA) being what first anon asked, How They Get Together.

heads up, wc of this is 1.9k words long so buckle up for a bit of a read jfsjdfkjbf

because first anon, youre right!!! the boys are stupendously complicated which i love so so much but canon has also shown us clearly that each of the boys' quirks and habits and tendencies causes a lot of (mostly played for laughs) friction. the bickering, the backhanded insults, the "im the best one here" preening contests. theyre all SOOOO RIDICULOUS and it is hilarious but yep! the boys r complex!! and that means this beautiful ship, imo, has a lot of phases to get to the actual romantic relationship bit.

how they get together, in my opinion, starts because of mc.

not in the sense that she matchmakes them all, but like.

phase 1 of the nxx team polycule is this:

through being in love with her (which we all know the boys 100% are), each of the boys come to terms with their own flaws and weaknesses. it's very apparent to me in all the story thus far that these boys are flawed as hell, it's very compelling but even more compelling to me is how all of them also do intense mental gymnastics to Not Confront Those Flaws. like, marius is a dickbag always teasing and toeing the line of insincerity, vyn is a controlling mf who always tries to sway situations to his benefit, artem is so repressed to the point that he has genuine trouble with emotions, luke is a self sacrificial bastard and also a huge hypocrite about how no, actually, hes the only one that should be hiding his pain and being dishonest, no dishonesty from other people!! in the beginning of the story, all the boys have their flaws and seem to have just kinda...not addressed how those flaws are harming them and the people around them.

and then mc rolls around and they all fall in love with her. and she sees those flaws and she doesnt let them slide. she challenges the boys in her own ways to see another side of the situation, to acknowledge what theyre doing. she doesnt want to get rid of flaws, thats impossible and also not cool. she just has this beautiful hope for like, all of humanity, that goodness can prevail with the right work. so when she sees her beloved nxx boys, she believes that for them as well.

which leads to phase 2 of the nxx team polycule:

the boys, more aware of themselves, become more aware of each other.

they werent Unaware of the others of course. it's just that they didnt like...truly connect on a personal level just yet. they saw the other teammembers with their emotional armor and flaws and saw a wall that wasnt worth looking past.

but after mc makes them realize that hey, flaws arent the end of the world actually, it's alright and the person behind them may just be worth it, the boys like. end up understanding the others. A LOT OF THIS BIT IS UNINTENTIONAL, ON THEIR PARTS KJDSBFS. like they stumble into understanding each other by accident, they didnt plan it, but over the course of nxx investigations, it's inevitable that they end up seeing the depths of the others. i delve into this a little bit in my fanfic "filler eps of the lost gold" where the boys are just going thru their actions and then trip over another boy's fears or desires and through that, gain a deeper understanding mutually.

and with understanding, sometimes, comes trust.

phase 3 of the nxx team polycule goes like this:

everybody in this team, whether they like it or not, whether they know it or not, has a heart that wants to give love so desperately.

marius lives in a world full of snakes so he cant have his heart on his sleeve for his own protection. vyn wants to be seen as perfect and the heart is inherently messy so he holds it back. artem for a very very long time was focused on work and success and achievement that he neglected his heart. and luke has been giving love all his life in a sense but in a way thats hidden.

all these tendencies that are brought upon their life circumstances results in this: they want to love honestly but they havent been able to do this

until mc. and all of them want to push back whatever fears or patterns their life has instilled in them because they see her and see somebody so unwaveringly good that all their hearts begin giving love to her to make her happy and to make themselves happy as well.

but heres the thing. the boys dont just see mc. by this point, they have connected and understood and come to trust each other as well, and the consequence of that is that They Can See Each Other Now Too, Truly.

and heres the thing. all of the boys are unwaveringly good as well.

one by one, each of the boys realize that what they feel for the other boys in the team starts to...change. yeah theyre all friends, they pick on each other a lot of the time, but the bedrock of the relationship is solid and strong now. but when marius is with luke, marius sees a light inside of luke so bright that he seems unaware that he gives off. when artem is with vyn, artem sees a goodness inside of vyn that hesitates to make itself obvious and known because vyn is scared of getting hurt thanks to it. all of them see the other and their goodness and, unbidden, their hearts want to give love to each other as well.

and because theyre all a bit stupid in their own way theyre like, huh, weird! wonder why this feeling is so familiar! and yet i cant seem to name it...and then they all independently compare these feeling with the feelings they have for mc, a feeling they do know the name of, and theyre like.

WAIT.

THESE FEELINGS ARE...VERY BASICALLY EXACTLY WHAT I FEEL FOR MC.

which only means one thing: theyve fallen in love with everybody else

marius: //goes to his studio to Think and sees that a bunch of his recent art actually had little crumbs of these feelings already, etched into the brushstrokes and scenes. has an emotional crisis about it

vyn: //records a 1 hour long entry in his audio diary to examine and gain control of his feelings but by the end of the hour all he knows is that he wants to hold these people and be held by them

artem: //quite literally just bluescreens, artem.exe has stopped working, sits at his study and slowly, slowly, thunks his head down onto his desk, valiantly trying to ignore the fast pulse of his heart

luke: //manically vents about it to peanut who, by virtue of being a bird, doesnt get it. just keeps talking at peanut to get a grasp of it all and then lies down on the floor, overwhelmed

mc, sitting in her apartment watching some netflix: ...why do i inexplicably feel as if something very, very important has just happened?

phase 4 of the nxx team polycule is basically:

pining: extreme difficulty level

because pining is already hard when ur pining for one person. what more for an additional 3 more people. and those additional 3 more people are pining back.

and all these boys are SOOOO OBVIOUS with their romantic feelings, in their own special way. the way they show their affection to mc starts to bleed into their interactions with the others and everybody can CLEARLY SEE WHAT IS GOING ON, LOL, but also all the boys are too chickenshit to confront it, because if they confront it, what will even happen??? being in love with each other, all of them, thats going to be such a complicated fucking relationship, holy shit. it's 2030, yeah, being a polyamorous group relationship isnt completely unheard of, but sue them, theyre scared.

but mc (who i forgot to mention already knows of the boys' romantic feelings for her, shes just hasnt made a move yet on any of them because SHES IN LOVE WITH ALL OF THEM AS WELL and shes been trying to figure out how the hell to make that work, she cant bear to choose just one of them, she'd be heartbroken over leaving the rest of them behind) sees that the nxx investigation team is now all pining for each other FULLY and she kinda wants to laugh when she realizes whats going on because like, what are the chances? that this would happen? that they all found each other and their feelings fell into just the right place for nobody to be left behind?

theyre all scared, she can tell. and she is as well, she wont lie.

but shes always had a belief that goodness can prevail with the right work.

and love is one of the greatest goods out there.

phase 5 of the nxx team polycule:

It's Time For Communication, Baby!!!!!

the exact scenes of how this happens is a bit vague to me. it could go two ways: mc going to each of the boys independently to talk about feelings, hers about everybodys and his about everybodys as well. OR they have a fucking meeting about it all together and artem literally schedules it in his google calendar, or something.

either way, they like, actually talk about this. starts casual, maybe over a chill date, maybe over dinner at a nice restaurant, maybe over a walk in the park as the sun is starting to set. but where ever it happens, the end result is the same: a heart is laid out bare and it is taken in gentle, grateful hands.

marius: OKAY, NOW THAT THE FEELINGS ARE OUT OF THE WAY, CAN I PLEASE KISS ONE OR ALL OF YOU, PLEASE, IVE BEEN WANTING TO KISS U GUYS FOR FOREVER

i dont want to say it's happily ever after, once they all get together. thats not really realistic.

they all have their quirks and tendencies and habits. and those will inevitable clash against each other. theyll have their arguments, theyll get upset, theyll sulk and be angry, sometimes. but also...

theyll see each other smile and feel like their love shining so brightly. theyll reach out for another's hand and be held in such a way that makes them think that their heart is in a safe place. theyll love each other and theyll put in the work to continue loving each other. because goodness will prevail.

and they all see each other as the most good people in the world.

so whatever happens, theyll get through it together.

What I am hoping for from Winner is King ( 烽火流金)

Okay, so at this point, let’s just be reals here, Word of Honor has kinda set the bar for me in terms of standards to expect from the slew of danmei adaptations this year. Granted, I know that there are some who think the way it was adapted was not up to their standards and that it could have been done better, please don’t bring it on this post because this is not the post for it.

In this post, I’m going to talk about  Winner is King (*•̀ᴗ•́*)و ̑̑

Now, Sha Po Lang, the original novel, is for me one of the best things that I have read in a very long while. As such, I can be rather precious about what I am hoping to see come alive on the show and what I am hoping will be present in the portrayals I see. I know there are some concerns regarding the script and behind the scenes stuff - and they are very valid concerns that I feel too! - and with the recent announcement that instead of 45 episodes, we are only getting 40, I can foresee that there could be some rushed handlings of the very plotty nature of the source material and perhaps a sense that style can trump substance.

But as the actual show isn’t beaming right into our eyeballs just yet, here are some things I am looking forward to seeing in Winner is King and some things that I am crossing my fingers will make the final cut!

Things I am looking forward to:

The Changgu dynamic. I think it goes without saying that if the chemistry between your leads is a dud, the show doesn’t need to even pass Go, it can just shuffle itself off the board because it will be dead in the water. The Changgu dynamic has to be nailed; I need to see that self-doubt, that caring for the other but coming at it from the wrong way, that awkwardness that comes with trying to hold back the burden of your love and care because you don’t want to overwhelm the other... 

I need Gu Yun to be shamelessly sweet with his words and his coaxing of his Yan Wang from a sulk. I need Changgu saying “I hate you to death, Gu Yun” (pining)

Hu Ge Er. Let me just be clear here, I will cheer when she dies, but I hope that how they handle her characterisation will do her justice. There is no excusing the level of horrible that she is, but I hope that she isn’t written as a single dimension abusive piece of shit. Nuance, is what I am looking for. I need her to be the villain and the reason for Chang Geng.

I. NEED. THE. WOLF. ATTACK. SCENE. OUTSIDE. OF. YANHUI. TOWN. aka The First Time They Meet

There is legit no excuse for them to fuck this up, but the Steampunk elements. I would not know what else to say if they fuck this one thing up that is so integral and basic to the love of this IP. They cannot fuck this up. I am very sure I will join people in rioting if they do.

I need to see my Red Kites, my Heavy and Light Armours, my Dragons... I need to see the steam powered lamps, the iron puppets... I need them to get the Wind Slashers right. I need them to get this world-building right ok? I need to be dropped into this show and just swoon over just how accurate to imagination everything looks. Tencent does have the blessed ability to make very good looking productions, so on this note, I am assured. 

I need them to get the human element right; I need to understand why Gu Yun is the way he is, I need to know why the members of the Lin Yuan Pavillion will back Chang Geng and why they won’t. I need to know why Liao Chi would betray the Emperor. I need them to make me feel; I want them to make my heart hurt when Chang Geng’s heart is hurting, I want them to make me cry when Gu Yun is at his lowest and feels like he can’t go on. I want them to make me laugh, I want to feel for Shen Yi and Miss Chen’s awkward courting. 

On that note, I hope they get the Shen Yi and Gu Yun dynamic right too! These two are bros ok? Life and death, ride or die, best bros forever and I need, need them to nail just how integral these are to each other and how much they chose each other as family. I need the bickering, I need the protectiveness, I need the banter. 

I also need Chang Geng conspiring to marry Shen Yi off quickly so that he can have Gu Yun all to himself lol but lbr here if we can get an ending for this show from Tencent that even breathes the same atmosphere of air as satisfactory I will praise the heavens

The Bone of Impurity. I don’t know to what extent they will cover this or if they would do it the way the book does it, but this being an element that is integral to Chang Geng, I would be surprised if they dropped it entirely. So yeah, I am looking forward to seeing Chang Geng fretting and worrying and getting Bone of Impurity attacks.

Just the way that Gu Yun allows himself to be cared for my Chang Geng and how Chang Geng lets Gu Yun care for him

I want one acupuncture hedgehog scene please and thank you

I do want to see how they handle Chang Geng and his elder half-brother; how that dynamic unfolds will be something to pay some attention to, I think

Oh! That moment when Chang Geng kneels down in front of his brother and tells him to please bury any talk of his marriage and revealing to his brother the scars that he carries from his time living under Hu Ge Er’s roof (this is one brand of Whump that I promise you will hurt you very badly and it will be very good)

The argument at Jiangnan is something I really think will also make the final cut. It wouldn’t make sense to drop it seeing as this is a pivotal shift in their relationship where Chang Geng is finally holding his ground and not bending over backwards and believing everything his Yi Fu says. And this was the catalyst for their four year separation so yeah. I hope they do this justice.

I am not a betting person, but I high key bet that the scene between Gu Yun and the previous Emperor where he tells the man, “If you go, then I won’t have anyone left” and this being the moment that softens the dying fucker’s heart enough to give him a bracelet of beads that will be a major plot point towards the end

THE. BATTLE. SCENES.

Things I am hoping will happen:

At this point, speculation is that the point that tripped Winner Is King up for a recheck was the politics. This year is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party in China and rumour has it that shit be sieving thick and so a lot of shows are erring on the side of caution. 

Politics is the highest likelihood of a recheck but I am hoping that it won’t be dumbed down or watered down too much because the politics and the way things played out in the book was absolutely divine and I really want to see that court intrigue and scheming and interplay unfold.

I’ve mentioned in my most recent podcast episode that I am banking on this show to scratch my itch for a Nirvana in Fire level of plottiness and infinite craftiness of the characters and I am crossing all fingers and toes for that to happen because All! The! Characters! Hold! Their! Own! And I need to see that play out please I am not asking for much...

The final sea battle with the Pope. I wouldn’t even know where they would even begin to shoot that scene but this is something I would love to see happen.

The Bone of Impurity attack after Gu Yun sneakily left the capital. That was the scene that caught me and hooked, lined and sinkered me for Chang Geng as a character. Listening to this scene be brought to life in the audio drama has really hammered it home that if they make this bit into the show, I will watch and weep if it is done right. 

Cao Niangzi being Cao Niangzi. I am thinking it might not happen the way I want, but I just need them to get them right.

Ge Chen peeing on the enemy’s face. Please. I laughed so hard. I need this. It will be a balm to my soul.

Please, I need Gu Yun’s soul crushing flute playing like I need Gong Jun to always be absolutely horrible at singing because baby this is your niche and this is your charm own it work it

I also need Gu Yun stealing a bamboo flute from a 10 year old because he got jealous please and thank you

Any flashback of Chang Geng and Hu Ge Er before Yanhui Town

I want to see that moment that Gu Yun hears first hand from someone who had knowledge of what Hu Ge Er would do to a baby Chang Geng and the horrible abuse she inflicted on him, because up to that point, he only knew that something went on, but never to the extent that revelation wrought unto him

Any of the Bone of Impurity moments; any mention of it, any visual representation of it... Gosh, just the idea of having the Bone of Impurity made visual is just... Ugh. Yes. Please. The suffering.

[bonus] Things I wish will happen but will probably not:

The hot spring scene or a version of it

An implication that baby cannibalism was involved in the making of a Bone of Impurity

The scene where they get to the goddess doll (the description of it in the book was so bone chilling and if they do this I will have nightmares, I’m just warning you)

I really, really want a scene where, after being crowned Emperor, Chang Geng goes to the frontlines to reclaim the South and upon hearing that he was there, Gu Yun immediately panicked like he was about to be caught with his pants down doing something illegal when all he did was ordered his subordinates to keep news of his injuries from being reported back to the capital

Any flashback of Chang Geng and Hu Ge Er before Yanhui Town; especially when they were with the Barbarians

I want to see some version of Hu Ge Er realising what she has done to her own child and to Chang Geng
