Okay so here’s the thing. I freely admit I am Big Stupid. I forget things constantly. The Vampire Chronicles is a layered tale packed with constant retcons and gaps getting filled. Whole chunks of characters’ stories slip my mind on the reg.
So I understand I may be missing something major.
But.
From where I’m standing … I know that Armand was v upset when it happened, and given everything he’d been through to that point he’s absolutely allowed to be upset; but did Marius do wrong by turning Sybelle and Benjamin?
Hear me out: the rule of this universe wrt humans who tango with vampires is there’s only three eventual outcomes: death, madness, or vampirism. Obvs if Armand had his choice at that point in the series he’d have preferred them to have regular human lifespans and eventually die, but 1) given his history with Daniel, who knows if he wouldn’t eventually have changed his mind, and 2) it might not have been what they necessarily wanted for themselves. Cause the way both Sybelle and Benji talk makes it sound like they might’ve actually asked Marius to get vamped??
(And Pandora? Or wtf was Pandora even doing while all this was happening? She was there, what was she doing?)
Because here’s their response to it:
(…) Sybelle rose from the piano, and with her arms out ran to me. And Benji, who had been watching all the while, rushed to me also, and they imprisoned me gently in their tender arms.
“Oh, Armand, don’t be angry, don’t be, don’t be sad,” Sybelle cried softly against my ear. “Oh, my magnificent Armand, don’t be sad, don’t be. Don’t be cross. We’re with you forever.”
“Armand, we are with you! He did the magic,” cried Benji. “We didn’t have to be born from black eggs, you Dybbuk, to tell us such a tale! Armand, we will never die now, we will never be sick, and never hurt and never afraid again.” He jumped up and down with glee and spun in another mirthful circle, astonished and laughing at his new vigor, that he could leap so high and with such grace. “Armand, we are so happy.”
“Oh, yes, please,” cried Sybelle softly in her deeper gentler voice. “I love you so much, Armand, I love you so very very much. We had to do it. We had to. We had to do it, to always and forever be with you.”
Like, in the immediate aftermath, they’re both over the moon about it; they’ve even fed already. Later in the Prince Lestat era, they both seem fine; like I’m not recalling any major fledgling angst.
Claudia was eternally unlucky, and she was intensely lonely. Her relationships with both Lestat and Louis were complicated and strained (to the point that she tried to kill Lestat), she didn’t really have peers, and by the time she finally got a companion Armand was already engineering her death.
Daniel gradually went unhinged for a decade before becoming a vampire, and Armand might’ve blamed himself for Daniel’s full-fledged insanity afterward but it sounds to me like even if he’d somehow survived that horrible night he’d have lost his mind anyway. (By the way, who was it that kept Daniel fed while he was in that madness, huh?)
Benjamin and Sybelle are super lucky, relatively speaking; they have each other as peers, and Armand is somewhere between a peer and a guardian. From what we see in the PL era, they have their pursuits, they have a place in the vampire world — as fledgling vampires go, they seem to have as close to an ideal life as fledgling vampires get.
And like,, they got what they wanted: their Forever With Armand, with the sweet bonus of less physical harm to fear. And in the long run, after the … Veil-induced mania? wears all the way off, it seems like Armand isn’t that unhappy about it either.
So.
As much as Armand is totally allowed to have his feelings about it in the moment, all things considered it doesn’t seem like Marius “ruined” much of anything by turning them. At least not to me.
(Marius and Pandora? Tf was she doing?!)

Feel like I’m the only vampire chronicles fan who loves the new iwtv series
“Book Louis was white!!!”
He was a slave owner and while Anne Rice contextualizes it real well—she doesn’t try to soften the subject matter, she doesn’t try the “he was nice to his slaves” book Louis is like “yeah I was a slave owner, it was fucked up” —still I feel no attachment to white Louis. It was not the most interesting thing about him.
Anne Rice was weird about any POC in her books. It’s still a white centric narrative, the main cast of vampires is white. Boring. Black Louis is much more interesting. A Black vampire navigating his immortality among a society hostile to his kin is so much more captivating.
Many of the main vampires in her series get a book dedicated to them where they explain their origins, their experience with immortality and their philosophies. Except...the vampires that get their own narrative are white. I would love to see an Ancient Black vampire that was kicking before any racism as it is now was invented. I wanna know their perspective, I wanna see them philosophize.
“Vampires can’t have sex!!”
Later in the books they invent vampire viagra—also cry harder im glad they’re fucking and sucking
“Book Claudia was supposed to be turned at 5 Years old. Book Claudia would kill to be a teenager even!! This Claudia almost looks like an adult!”
Teenagers definitely aren’t adults. Imagine being on the Cusp of adulthood and then you are paused mid puberty unable to develop any further. That would be maddening She looks like a young girl trying very hard to dress older than she is. Also it would be rough getting an actual 5 year old to act her part. Also there's some weird pedophile shit in the books, I'm glad we're writing that part out.
“Anne rice would be rolling in her grave”
Let her roll. Anne rice hated any adaptation—she was a control freak. Look up “interrogating the text from the wrong perspective” it’s her melt down in response to bad Amazon reviews on her vampire chronicles’ “Blood Canticle”
She didn’t even respect her own canon. She retcons it multiple times. In the end she retcons the origin of vampires (which had been established in books 2 and 3) and made it the product of an alien parasite. All bcuz some took a sudden interest in science fiction, she just had to turn it into science fiction
This series is not a masterpiece, it becomes pulp fiction by book 4, almost every book opens up like a personal vlog, Lestat is her Mary sue and also self insert. There is gay ghost sex that turns out to be incest. Actually there is so much incest, ntm the pedophilia it becomes almost unreadable.
God and the Devil are ex bfs that are in a millennia long theological and philosophical debate, also the Devil tries to recruit Lestat as the prince of hell and he drinks Jesus's blood. But several books later, just kidding, that wasn't the Devil that was just a spirit fucking around with Lestat.
The second to last book is called Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis--there are bird-reptile aliens pissed off about the asteroid that destroyed the dinosaurs and want to eradicate mammals bcuz in every other universe reptiles are the dominant-sentient species.
There is nothing sacred about the original, this is not Beowolf or the Epic of Gilgamesh--this is Anne rice and her self-insert blorbo getting into scrapes. When adapting a piece of fiction the most important thing is preserving the Themes--which the show is doing superbly. What truly matters is that every character in Anne Rice's show is bisexual and polyamorous and a disaster.
If you're that upset about Louis being Black and Armand being Muslim you're just racist and either in denial or you know full well.

Round 3 | Poll 5
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
~ Note: This poll is being done out of a genuine love and affection for these types of characters! Please keep that in mind when adding commentary. Due to a tie in the previous round, this one is a three-way!
Propaganda under the cut!
Chloe:
~ She’s a main antagonist in a children’s TV show, so of course she’s annoying. She’s the MC’s rival, and she behaves like a basic, rich teenager. She could’ve be a quite interesting character, sadly the writers didn’t really try :( The show’s writer said in an interview that Chloé was created to be as unpleasant as possible.
~ literally just your stereotypical bratty rich teenager. The class is so done with her antics in the first three seasons and the show keeps trying to make her like, “evil” but she’s being puppeted by all the other actual big bads and also people aren’t really afraid of her? And her “evil” deeds are literally no stakes to the other characters no matter and the “good” characters can beat her pretty easily so she’s just. actually a nobody who whines and complains and tries to do shit to people are so done with her and i adore her very much she deserved so much better
Lestat:
~ something is so wrong with him
~ Insufferable horrible fantastic man. Wants an open relationship but only for him.
~ won’t answer any questions about vampires. baby traps his boyfriend by turning a child into a vampire. becomes a rockstar and then brags about it all the time. bites people without asking. refers to himself as the Brat Prince. laughs at things that aren’t funny.
~ literally a detriment to everyone around him also one of his actual names is The Brat Prince
Dio:
~ He dresses like a circus ringleader, he is full of himself and full of shit, he doesn’t hesitate to kill a child. He manipulates and lies to serve his goal which is the destruction of mankind <3

Okay folks. Hear me out. I know the popular vision on this site is for amc Lestat’s rockstar era to be like.. leather pants and mesh shirts ala Maneskin (and Stuart Townsend tbh) but I just don’t see it for this interpretation of the character.
Tumblr media
(I can’t shake the vibe that Damiano is a liiittle too close to what we’ve already seen, I’ll explain shortly)
But also.. we’ve already gotten a canon taste of this Lestat’s stage presence in s01e07. Look at this guy. He’s a flamboyant, piano playing dandy.. like a flamingly gay theatre faguette. This man was crowned king of Mardi Gras and chose to dress up like a queen..
Tumblr media
No. No I don’t see mesh shirts and leather pants in this man’s future (at least not with a 2022 sensibility). But I do see a potential vision. Ride this thought train with me for a sec.
So for this theory to work I should first quickly explain where I think we are in the timeline:
We know that the original interview occurred in the 1970s, and that Daniel doesn’t remember much of that era.. (perhaps he was much closer to the action than he remembers) but I (and several other long term fans) think that the events in Dubai 2022 are likely a fusion of Prince Lestat and Merrick. But more importantly, I think that the events of TVL and QotD have already happened, and mostly likely in close proximity to the original interview.. it’s a lot to explain but trust me it works.
Lestat’s rockstar era occurring in the ‘80s (or even late ‘70s) would of course be book accurate, but it also would allow the show to distance itself from what has already been done in the films. So much like moving the events of IwtV from the 1780s to the 1910s for aesthetic variation, we would be moving the modern events of TVL and QotD from the early 2000s of the film back to their original placement in the timeline. And boy oh boy are the fashion options exciting.. but I have something in mind a little left of field.
So like.. I’m imagining a gothic Liberace, clad in 18th century waistcoats and dramatic capes. Think sequins and candelabras. It’s all very late ‘70s early ‘80s. I know the books are more of a guideline than a bible for this series but the TVC vampires are drawn to the fashion of their era. I can 100% see interpreting his wolf killer coat into an extravagant sequined cape. Imagine “Come to Me” rearranged as a Neil Diamond piano rock ballad.. like are you following my train of thought? Like this Lestat is so so SO gay. And the visual references amc has been pulling from understand that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(of course this is all very silly looking, but again, refer to Lestat at the Mardi Gras parade.. that’s him!)
Or think Elton John but like.. by way of Ozzy Osborne. Dramatic wigs and piano ballads, but also stage blood and prosthetics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This Lestat understands high camp and theatricality, and I see him deliberately toeing the line between these two seemingly conflicting aesthetics because that’s who he is. Frankly it’s who he has always been as a character. Lestat “eating” the king cake baby? It’s just Ozzy biting the head off a bat. And I think more of that is what we’re in for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I can’t not mention the absolutely perfect adaptation by innovation comics. This look is a great jumping off point for what we might see.. but I think the costume department will take it many many steps further)
Tumblr media
At their root the Vampire Chronicles are period drama, and Rolin and co. are already leaning into that (like there are what? Three active timelines in season one? I would expect even more as the series progresses tbh) and I think a season set largely in the 1980s is going to be more enticing to this team than one set in our present decade. And that’s okay! There’s not only a ton of fashion potential in that era, but also storytelling tools that could not only maintain the current framing device, but also expand on it.
Imagine season 2 ending not with Lestat arriving at the door, but with Armand handing Daniel yet another stack of documents to read and research. Only this time it’s Rolling Stone interviews, vinyl records, music videos and mtv appearances on tape.. all of this ephemera could be used similarly to Claudia’s diary in s01e04 to develop a richer storytelling device. But also it would help to keep Louis the primary narrator, while still providing voice and agency to Lestat (who I suspect is recovering from his post-MTD coma, but that’s a theory for another day).
Tumblr media
Of course this is all theory and I’m sure many of you are more informed on bts spoilers than I, but this is one topic I’ve been wanting to talk about since season 1 concluded, and knowing season 2 will be treading into TVL territory opens up a ton of possibilities. But yeah! Even if the show goes in a totally different direction I hope if nothing else this might inspire some fan artists to play around with an alternative era for Les!

Dear companions in darkness, the wait is finally over! We'd like to thank everyone who participated in our little guessing game, we got a lot of interesting answers.
For the month of November, we bring you a fun low-pressure bingo inspired by Lestat, that you can fill up at your leisure throughout the month.
You can use the prompts on the bingo card to write fanfics, make fanart, amvs, edits or any other creative outlet to show your appreciation for our beloved Brat Prince.
You can find the rules and guidelines for the event here. The link to the collection can be found here.
Don't forget to tag with #vflestatbirthdaybingo and/or tag us at @vampirefest so that we can find your posts.
Here is the complete bingo card for our birthday boy!
You can find the full detailed prompts below the cut.
Happy Lestat Month!
1. "My lord, the Wolfkiller": The killing of the wolves, a moment that comes to define Lestat for all eternity. You can explore this fundamental event in Lestat's life, the way it altered the course of his life and his family dynamics, and the symbolism it came to represent in Lestat's later life.
2. First love I The witches' place: For Nickistat lovers out there, this is your time to shine! It's also a chance to explore another formative moment of Lestat's life—his experience at the witches' place—when Lestat came to the fundamental understanding that there is no meaning in the end - not to the cruelty, not to the laws of men - all that exists is the one life he's living and the aesthetic of it all.
3. The performer: Actor | Rockstar: Performing is Lestat's second nature, either to present an image of himself to others to earn their love, or to hide this true self. From the time he is a young man, Lestat is awed by actors and artists, they create worlds and life out of nothingness. Some of Lestat's best and happiest moments are on the stage, acting or singing for his adoring public.
4. Rue Royale era: For decades, 1132 Rue Royale was the home of our favourite little vampire family. A family that, according to Lestat, shouldn't have lasted as long as it did. Here you can explore the dynamics between the unholy family, between Lestat and Louis, and the highs and lows of this period in Lestat's life. As Lestat said, he has never been as happy as in that little house on Rue Royale.
5. Free Space: This is your chance to explore any themes or moments in our brat prince's life outside of the prompts proposed. Let your creativity run wild!
6. "I don't like myself, you know.! love myself, of course. I'm devoted to myself till my dying day. But I don't like myself.": Use this prompt to explore Lestat's insecurities and his complicated relationship with himself, from his abandonment issues to his reflections on his body, his monstrosity and so much more.
7. Lust for life: Here you can explore Lestat the dreamer, Lestat the hedonist, Lestat the embodiment of hunger. He has a lust for blood, love, adventure, for a better life filled with more excitement and lived to the fullest. Lestat takes what he wants and follows his every whim.
8. Resilience: Lestat is the metaphorical cockroach of the Vampire Chronicles universe. Whatever life throws at him, he rolls with the punches and finds a way to survive and make the best of every situation. He always finds a way to reinvent himself and to keep moving forward. With this prompt, you can explore Lestat's defiance in the face of obstacles and his resilience even under the worst circumstances.
9. The Brat Prince | Prince Lestat era: Set your creations in the Prince Lestat era or simply explore Lestat's bratty nature that earned him the moniker "The Brat Prince".

What, to you, is the most under appreciated Marius scene? I wanna hear from someone who shows so much real love for him
Thank you for this ask is so beautiful and interesting! Sorry it take me a long time to answer! But here we are.
- I think there are several scenes that are used against Marius, and actually they are often misinterpreted more because as Oscar Wilde said, "Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault." and I think this is one of the aspects that we have to consider, especially towards the real Marius, canon Marius, the one created by Anne Rice. Many interpretations can be made, and a character can seem so close to us or so far from us, but we should never make the mistake of superimposing him on ourselves. The character of Marius has taught me so much sometimes even to see those sides of my person that I do not accept. I can admit that I would like to be like him, but I am not, and I would never allow myself to superimpose my story or my feelings on his. As much as I love him as much as I feel close to him, I don't have the same feelings as him toward other characters in the chronicles, but I don't allow myself to disfigure or deny them because I personally don't like them.
Marius does not come from me or my story or my feelings, but from Anne Rice's, and like all of her characters, they have a life and a story and feelings, that she has given them and that belong to each of them. And without them their story or what the author wants to tell or teach, fades away and no longer makes sense. Having said that, to clarify that I am not calling anyone unintelligent or perverted or whatever! May I ask for forgiveness because I would like to talk about two scenes and not one. The first is from TVA and is the scene where Marius shows Amadeo what it is like to be a vampire and what the dark gift entails, the dinner with the Florentines. There is talk of cruelty and wickedness when there is neither. It is a scene of teaching not cruelty. Leaving out the reason why Marius is there , namely, to protect Bianca, everything revolves around life even though it is a death scene. The reality of canon Marius is that there is hardly anyone else who has maintained as a vampire such high moral values as his. And this is also attested in Prince Lestat where it is clearly stated that Marius has always lived by the rule of doing as little harm as possible. Marius's is not a lesson in cruelty or suffering, it is actually a teaching to respect life in death.
Marius and Amadeo are there because these people are evil people, acting for evil and for personal gain, who have no problem killing or torturing, destroying other people's lives, often after using them to their own advantage. Amadeo suffers the charm, but shows no sign of fear as Marius proceeds to drink the blood of every person present. "It is a penance to kill, Amadeo, that is the obstacle. It is a penance to kill for nothing, nothing, not honor or valor or decency." It is against everything that Marius has always felt could somehow justify death or killing another living being, this killing of the dark gift, Marius, as an ancient Roman sees valor or honor as a reason to kill. It is a penance to kill, Marius says, because in fact it is, he who did not want to be an immortal, he who was torn from his mortal life and had to accept that he had become a vampire, a killer, who must kill to live. And in spite of that, he found in killing evil men a way to survive that pain, and in spite of that he considers it a penance because it is always depriving a human being of his own life. And that is already a lesson, but there is an even greater one. At the moment when Marius kills Martino, Amadeo rebels, gets angry, cries, accuses Marius " You wanted me to hate the thing, to cry for them..." and Marius responds to him:
"Weep at least for one of them...Is it too much to ask that one death be regretted among many? For a nameless beggar sleeping on a makeshift boat we have no tears do we? And we do not weep for any of them except for Martino, the most wicked and because he flatters us do we not?" And if this is not a lesson, well .... Yes it is true, there is anger in Marius, yes it is true I can grant that there is even a little jealousy, but the fact remains that he is very clear about how Amadeo's behavior is wrong. Every life is important and every life deserves to be plant, it matters little whether you are a poor beggar or a banker, death comes, and in it there is no difference.
Amadeo cry Martino but because he flattered him, because he spoke of his beauty, of his desire for him, and that was enough to make Amadeo weak, to consider letting go of the reason why that man had to die, not only for Bianca, but because he was evil, and his evilness was the destruction of so many other lives. And that in itself is a lesson, for an immortal, and in addition Marius adds how it is a pain, a penance to deprive the world of a life, even if it is evil, and to take on a death in order to continue living. And beyond that, how it is wrong to give in to flattery, how it is wrong to have tears only for those who have flattered us and not for those who are simply poor like the beggar. Life is precious whether it is a poor man's life or a rich man's life and to be the reason why that life ceases is cause for sorrow. And Amadeo after that moment of anger understands Marius, understands his lesson: "I saw you drinking from those who were wicked, condemned in your hearts for an abominable crime. I have seen you feast as is your nature, I have seen you sip the blood with which you must live...I see this is what you intended to show me and you have succeeded." Amadeo is not afraid, not shocked, not traumatized, not terrified, no none of this.
Amadeo saw and understood, reasoned and absorbed Marius' lesson, and came to the conclusion and to understand what Marius was showing him. Amadeo does not see cruelty or wickedness he sees the choice of a creature, who could indiscriminately feed on whatever he wants, but who chooses to feed on the wicked, and not only that, he mourns that death at the same time. It is a lesson, there is no cruelty or mistreatment, rather, there is a profound teaching which is to respect life, even the lives of the wicked, even the lives of those who do evil. And as Armand himself will admit in TVA, about how Marius was always a Master and a source of love and inspiration, he will say that he was not a Marius to Daniel. I would also like to briefly add a little reference to the scene in the Queen of the Damned, where Marius exposes himself and tries to talk and reason with Akasha. As those who, like me, have read Blood and Gold know, Thorne clearly talks about seeing the scene while he was trapped in the ice, and explains how he sensed the burning hatred Marius felt for Akasha at that moment. I not only want to highlight this scene to emphasize how Marius has always been extremely brave, because some people have the nerve to call him a coward, but mostly to emphasize his strength both in thought and the strength of his love.
Marius comes forward to talk to Akasha, not because he is her follower, not because he is her devotee, but to protect the other vampires, all the vampires he loves. And this is actually what he has always done, protecting the parents, he has allowed all the other vampires to live freely and peacefully their immortality. His chains have been the wings of all the other vampires. He does not want to reason with Akasha because he loves her or because he recognizes her as a deity; he wants to try to reason with her because he wants to protect those he loves. And he swallows his pride, he swallows his anger, his sacrifice, his pain, and he chooses each and every word carefully and carefully, because he knows that they are all in danger. And he knows that he cannot protect them if it comes to a confrontation. His weapon is reason, his mind clear and rational, his words full of feeling and care, he is sacrificing every bit of himself to be able to somehow put an end to that madness. And I would also add his sacrifice in Blood communion because even there it is Marius who in order to protect the younger ones, though there were more powerful and older vampires, it is Marius who exposes himself, it is Marius who goes and tries to protect everybody. That's what Marius is-a Master, a Protector, a bulwark of willpower, love and dedication. Marius is an outstanding character.
