Listen, if Alys weren’t getting married to Sigorn I would’ve shipped her & Jon till judgement day istfg. All that chemistry - winter’s lady, Jon squeezed her hand, Jon teased - with the bride of the wedding????? and for what? for what I ask?

Earlier I had mentioned how ‘Arya’s’ marriage to Ramsay Bolton is the thread that connects all the plots in the North in ADwD and I could not help notice how it’s mentioned or is the driving force for what is happening in four different locations or about 70% of the North plot.
Reek I (Theon I) - We are first introduced to this wedding in the North in this chapter when Ramsay tells Reek that he is to be wed to Arya Stark and needs Reek to stick around in better conditions.
Davos III: Davos is brought before the Manderlys with the Freys and Lannister/Bolton spies in attendance. Lady Wylla Manderly sticks up for Lady Arya Stark by telling everyone what an absolutely rotten fellow Ramsay Bolton is.
Reek II (Theon II): Reek meets ‘Arya’ and understands what is happening. This is Jeyne Poole, not Arya Stark.
The Wayward Bride (Asha I): The Boltons send off the wedding invites. Over at Deepwood Motte, Asha Greyjoy gets one written in the blood of dead Ironborn. This is also where she learns that her brother Theon is alive.
Jon VI: An interesting parallel with Asha and Theon here when Jon also gets a wedding invite at the Wall and learns that his little sister Arya Stark is alive and to be married to Ramsay Bolton. A lot of soul searching and angst happens before he decides he can’t help.
Davos IV: Manderly reveals all and the North Remembers. Manderly and Robett Glover proclaim Ramsay evil by birth and blood and tell Davos they need Ned’s son, Rickon, to prevent the Boltons from claiming Winterfell through Ned’s daughter Arya. They promise to support Stannis if Davos gets them Rickon Stark and Shaggydog.
Melisandre I: The red priestess convinces the Lord Commander to send Mance and the spearwives to rescue Arya based on her visions of Arya fleeing her marriage and heading to the Wall.
Reek III (Theon III): The Boltons get news that Stannis has left the Wall, won Deepwood and is marching on them. They strategize and decide to wait at Winterfell because Roose is confident that the Northmen with Stannis will reach Winterfell come what may to save Arya Stark.
Jon VII: Jon prays for Arya and gets a letter from Stannis with a recap of all that’s happened, promising to do his best to save Arya and find a better match for her (Presumably after killing Ramsay). Jon makes plans to send Arya to Braavos
The Prince of Winterfell (Theon IV): The Wedding of ‘Arya Stark’, given in marriage by Theon Greyjoy to Ramsay Bolton. There’s a feast, lots of interesting dynamics and political games played between various houses. Roose is vary of Manderly and Abel the Bard is there with his ‘Die Hard’ mission to get a Stark maiden secretly out of Winterfell.
Jon VIII: Jon and Val discuss Mel’s visions in her fires. Jon hopes that her visions of Arya are true and that Arya gets to the Wall safely.
The Turncloak (Theon V): Lady Barbrey and Theon Turncloak discuss the intricacies of the alliances between the different houses and the impact of Lady Arya’s tears in galvanizing the North to unite against the Boltons.
The King’s Prize (Asha II): Asha is introduced to the bad-ass mountain clans marching with Stannis Baratheon, who make it clear that they are going to save Lady Arya Stark come what may, no matter that Winter has clearly come to the North. The Boltons were right about them.
Jon IX: Jon’s hopes are dashed when Mel’s visions of a girl in grey fleeing a marriage on a dying horse turns out to be Alys Karstark and not Arya Stark.
A Ghost in Winterfell (Theon VI): Stannis reaches Winterfell! Theon ponders on the uncertain loyalties of the lords who are only there at Winterfell because of Arya Stark. Mance’s Spearwives approach Theon.
Jon X: Jon compares Alys’ bravery to Arya and gives her in marriage to Sigorn, Magnar of Thenns, in a wedding that is clearly meant to contrast the darkness of ‘Arya’s marriage to Ramsay in Winterfell.  Melisandre warns Jon of ‘daggers in the dark’, a warning that Jon refutes because she was wrong about Alys being Arya.
Theon VII: The escape. The Spearwives approach Jeyne and tell her that they are taking her to her half-brother at the Wall, Lord Crow. Even as the Spearwives are trapped and possibly caught, Jeyne Poole and Theon Greyjoy jump the walls to freedom.
Jon XI: Jon walks the Wall, worried and concerned for Arya. He misses her and hopes that Mance succeeds in his mission and gets her home to him.
The Sacrifice (Asha III): While the king’s men and queen’s men complain about the march to Winterfell, the loss of life and lack of food and doubt if they can make it, the Northern army and mountain clans are adamant about taking Winterfell and saving Arya. Asha is then finally united with Theon (and Jeyne).
Jon XIII: The Pink Letter. Ramsay demands his bride back, along with Reek and Stannis’ family. Jon decides to go attack the Warden of the North with an army of Wildlings. This leads to mutiny, assassination and his death.
------------
And this is why GRRM considered Jeyne Poole essential to the story he was telling in the books. Without it, everything changes and story is now different on the TV show compared to the books or two different canons as GRRM puts it.
It’s incredible how Arya Stark is not even in Westeros and yet the entire plot in the North location in ADwD pivots around her marriage to Ramsay Bolton, in terms of House Stark politics in the North.

“What fire joins, none may put asunder,” came the echo, from queen’s men and Thenns and even a few of the black brothers.
Except for kings and uncles, thought Jon Snow.
[...]
“Will my lord be feasting with us?” Mully asked Jon Snow.
“Shortly.” Sigorn might take it as a slight if he did not appear. And this marriage is mine own work, after all.
- Jon X, ADWD
Something that makes me go absolutely feral about the whole Alys Karstark thing is the pure irony of it all. We know that marriages and inheritances are matters that need to be dealt with by the king. We see this play out in ACOK where Bran, in his capacity as Prince of Winterfell, has to deal with such matters: lands, succession, marriage, and justice.
Except now, there’s a terrible lack of kings up North. Robb’s dead, Bran fled, and Winterfell is now occupied by the Boltons who really aren’t the sort to mete out justice; in fact, they’re involved in the very acts of injustice that are presented to us.
So poor Alys Karstark needs to find a helper but the only person available is Ned Stark’s bastard son, Jon Snow. But big problem, he’s sworn to an order that prohibits him from wearing any crowns. Still she goes to him, kneels before him, and begs him to be her aid; she asks him to step in the place of the King in the North/Lord of Winterfell and do her justice. She even asks him to do so in his father’s name.
But here’s the kicker, Jon does have his father’s name: Stark. Jon can step in and be the King in the North. That’s because Robb legitimized him and named him heir. So Alys unknowingly sought her king, knelt before him, and asked him to help her. And he did! Her king gave her the justice she desired. Really, that’s what kings are for: justice. And Jon is already an old hand at that.

Jon Snow and Women That He Empowers
Throughout his arc Jon continues to defy the rules of the system because he rightly identifies them as unfair. Not just for him, but for the outcasts in the Night's Watch and also for the women.
His rule defying starts from his second chapter itself.
Arya Stark
Jon Snow gives a custom made sword to his 9 year old sister, Arya Stark because she wants to learn to fight.
I had Mikken make this special. The bravos use swords like this in Pentos and Myr and the other Free Cities. It won't hack a man's head off, but it can poke him full of holes if you're fast enough. - Jon II, AGOT
...and he doesn't give that sword to Arya just to indulge her whims and fancies, he advises her as to how she can learn swordfighting on her own.
Until you find a partner, watch how they fight in the yard. Run, and ride, make yourself strong. And whatever you do …" - Jon II, AGOT
He emboldens Arya’s desire for swordfighting, rather than berate her for breaching gender roles.
Val
Jon also recognizes the value and abilities of women beyond his family. He entrusts Val to complete a crucial mission, even though others had failed before her.
Jon was counting on that, trusting that Val could succeed where Black Jack Bulwer and his companions had failed. She need fear no harm from the free folk, he hoped … but both of them knew too well that wildlings were not the only ones waiting in the woods. Jon VIII, ADWD
Alys Karstark
He recognises Alys as head of her house.
Or will be soon. "A daughter comes before an uncle too. If her brother is dead, Karhold belongs to Lady Alys. And she has given her hand in marriage to Sigorn, Magnar of Thenn." Jon X, ADWD
Freefolk Women
He gives Queensgate to Morna White Mask to garrison,
When he conferred Oakenshield on Tormund Giantsbane and Queensgate on Morna White Mask - Jon XIII, ADWD
Then makes Long Barrow to be garrisoned by all women,
The Long Barrow will be all women, aside from the commander and chief steward. Jon VII, ADWD
...breaking down the gender barriers within the Night's Watch.
And what does Jon think of women in general, he answers it himself,
Jon wondered what Ygritte would have done in her place. The women are the strong ones. Jon III, ADWD

What if Gendry r*pes Arya? I was talking with someone about theories and they were telling me practically a whole book , they said something about Arya having a child but leaving it with Gendry and go away in the sea!! For some reason it brought me back a theory i read on your Quora about a r*pe that could potentially tie in Arya‘s arc or attempt.. My thoughts were maybe The Mountain now Robert Strong or Jaime (revenge on Ladystonehart or something) and maybe Gendry 🤔
Hi Anon!
It's not going to be Gendry. Gendry had already made a move that looked like rape but, luckily for Arya, it was only a stupid play. Do you remember that they were wrestling in the smithy? Gendry invited Arya to a secluded place and then he pushed her to the ground. They wrestled and Arya looked like a rape victim afterwards. Her pretty dress was ruined and all. It looked like a rape attempt: luring a girl to a secluded place, pushing her to the ground, tearing her dress. I really hope it was only stupidity on Gendry's part, not a real threat to Arya.
That scene had its function. Because it made Arya look like a victim of sexual abuse. Moreover, when the two of them returned from the smithy, Martin let us hear My Featherbed, a song about a Targaryen prince in love with a girl from the North.
This chain of events reflects what happened between Robert, Lyanna and Rhaegar. Lyanna and Rhaegar fell in love in Harrenhal and it made Robert furious. When Rhaegar left, Robert "demanded his rights". Lyanna pushed him away, ran off and married Rhaegar.
Gendry, Arya and Jaqen are involved in a love triangle, similar to that of Robert, Lyanna and Rhaegar.
GRRM said that Gendry and Arya have no future together. There won't be any baby. If Arya is going to be a mother someday, Jaqen will father her child/children.
But back to the rape threat. There are at least three scenes in the books that point to a Lannister threatening Arya.
First one is the prologue to A Feast for Crows where Rosey is a foil for Arya, Pate is a foil for Jaqen and Lazy Leo is a foil for Jaime. Leo tells Pate that he wants to rape Rosey and Pate warns him that he might kill him if he does.
Then, in A Dance with Dragons, we get a foreshadowing of Jaqen fighting Jaime. It's in Jon X chapter where Alys Karstark marries Sigorn. Here, Patchface is a foil for Jaqen and Owen the Oaf is a foil for Jaime. The two are dancing together during the wedding feast which makes everyone laugh. It is a metaphor for the fight between Jaqen and Jaime. I suppose the latter won't be a laughing thing.
We also get a foreshadowing of a Lannister raping Arya in the Mercy chapter from The Winds of Winter. Here, Arya is playing a rape victim in the play about the Stranger's revenge. In the play the rapist is Tyrion. It's a reminder of the love triangle that GRRM had originally planned for Tyrion, Arya and Jon. In the current version that would be Jaime, Arya and Jaqen.
The showrunners of Game of Thrones gave a nod to that part of the books when they showed Arya and Jaime at the Twins in the finale of season 7. Arya wore the disguise of a wench and was eye-flirting with Jaime. Nothing much happened between them because Jaqen, and the whole storyline that came with him, had been written off.
Thank you for dropping by, Anon. And I apologize for the delay.

Ship: Jon Snow x Alys Karstark
I ship it!
What made you ship it?
Although I also ship Alys and Sigorn, and Jon was like their wedding planner, I find Jon and Alys interactions in ADWD very cute and that plus some beautiful edits that I see here on Tumblr made me ship them.
What are your favourite things about the ship?
One of the things I like is the parallels of Alys and Lyanna, Northern girls running away from unwanted marriages, ans finding help in someone else to do it, Lyanna with Rhaegar and Alys traveled to Castle Black and asked Jon for help and he decided to do it. Also like I said above their interactions are cute and Alys is Jon's type of woman he likes.
Is there an unpopular opinion on your ship?
I don't think there's an unpopular opinion now fot this ship, it's a rare or minor ship so the people who ships them is a small portion of the fandom and I think more or less we all share similar takes.

@clutchofmuses sent ; ❝ You are not at all what I imagined. ❞ - Alys to Sigorn x.
Tumblr media
the south ( the north as lord crow calls it though sigorn disagrees ) was not what he imagined it might be, as it looked and felt the same as the north, except more hostile in ways their home had not been. most of the men on the wall despised the free folk; their disdain for their commander's choice in allowing them through the wall and close remained clear enough for all to see.
sigorn did not blame them for their hate, as he did not care enough to, and plenty of his people felt similarly about the crows and their new commander. it did not matter how they felt, as he had knelt to stannis baratheon when they had been granted passage through the wall, so peace would remain between his people and the night's watch until there was a reason to leave it behind. the thenn are not lawless and crude as some free folk were, and he had no intentions of allowing that to change now that he was magnar.
Tumblr media
men outside the night's watch are not meant to live on the wall, but sigorn had no interest in joining the ranks of the men who killed his father and countless of his people. the gods and lord crow seemed to have other ideas for him as well, seeing that he stood before some southron girl ( she is to be your wife, lord crow had said ), a pretty southron girl though she was a far cry from the women he was used to. "you . . . pretty," the words felt thick on his tongue, the language almost unfamiliar to him as it was not the one of his people.

[20/20] ASOIAF power couples → Alys Karstark × Sigorn of Thenn
“[Sigorn] was bred and trained to give orders, not to take them,” Jon said. “Do not confuse the Thenns with free folk. Magnar means lord in the Old Tongue, I am told, but Styr was closer to a god to his people, and his son is cut from the same skin.”
[...]
Jon turned to Alys Karstark. “My lady. Are you ready?”
“Yes. Oh, yes.”
“You’re not scared?”
The girl smiled in a way that reminded Jon so much of his little sister that it almost broke his heart. “Let him be scared of me.”
The Magnar of Thenn stood waiting by the fire, clad as if for battle, in fur and leather and bronze scales, a bronze sword at his hip. His receding hair made him look older than his years, but as he turned to watch his bride approach, Jon could see the boy in him. His eyes were big as walnuts, though whether it was the fire, the priestess, or the woman that had put the fear in him Jon could not say. Alys was more right than she knew. [...]
The Magnar all but ripped the maiden’s cloak from Alys’s shoulders, but when he fastened her bride’s cloak about her he was almost tender. As he leaned down to kiss her cheek, their breath mingled. The flames roared once again.
[...]
The fish course was next, but as the pike was being boned, Lady Alys dragged the Magnar up onto the floor. From the way he moved it was plain that Sigorn had never danced before, but he had drunk enough mulled wine so that it did not seem to matter.
[...]
“Sigorn leads two hundred Thenns,” Jon pointed out, “and Lady Alys believes Karhold will open its gates to her. Two of your men have already sworn her their service and confirmed all she had to say concerning the plans your father made with Ramsay Snow. You have close kin at Karhold, I am told. A word from you could save their lives. Yield the castle. Lady Alys will pardon the women who betrayed her and allow the men to take the black.”

In the book, Jon seems to believe that it’s a bit of good old fashioned drunkenness that inspires Sigorn to dance... But I like to think that Alys won him over, all by herself.
A gift for the very talented @cosmiart - I hope you like it! (Love, Oakenshield!)
