How Alexa Enhances Education for Kids?
Tumblr media
Alexa in educational technology
Screen Time Reduction
Amazon A new era of technology is being ushered in by Alexa. One in which parents, teachers, and students can interact with technology through voice commands, enhancing learning, saving time, and giving access to vital information. Without ever opening their computers, students can use Alexa to schedule meetings with guidance counselors, obtain study materials, and keep track of upcoming events on their calendars.
Instructors can use Alexa to get ready for a lesson, and administrators can use it to get vital data like enrollment figures quickly.
Alexa in higher education
College students naturally use voice technology to communicate with instructors, the campus, and educational resources. By using Alexa to make it easier for them to find information, stay organized, and participate on campus, students all over the world are getting more out of their educational experience.
Alexa for learning companies and EdTechs
Alexa facilitates user engagement, expands the reach of EdTechs and learning companies, and enhances student learning. EdTechs are utilizing Alexa to improve user experience in a variety of ways, from assisting administrators and faculty in accessing critical data to developing a fresh method for students to review important ideas.
Using Alexa for the first time
You can use a variety of techniques to develop captivating Alexa experiences for your EdTech product or campus. From basic skill development to Alexa-enabled devices in common areas.
While at Lancaster University Alexa Picks Up New Skills
Alexa is being used by Lancaster University in the UK to help students get around campus and in their academic careers. They recently added Ask L.U., an Alexa skill that lets students check grades, schedule a free library pod, and get campus news by speaking. Discover how Alexa is improving on-campus and off-campus student life.
Education for Kids
While you may be familiar with iPad kids, are you familiar with Alexa kids? According to Amazon, households with children under the age of eight interact with Alexa twice as frequently as other users.
Impact on Learning
Music requests have increased 15% in the past year, mostly for children’s music. Roll on, Johnny Johnny, wheels on the bus Kids’ favorite songs include Yes Papa, Lakdi Ki Kathi, Baby Shark, and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Folk talkies appear to be of interest to Alexa users as well. Stories by Akbar Birbal, Tenali Raman, Panchatantra, and others are highly well-known, particularly in Hindi. According to Amazon, Alexa users request these stories on average 34 times every hour.
“We regularly hear from parents about how Alexa has aided them in their role as parents. The ability to use basic voice commands to access a variety of helpful kid-friendly experiences makes Alexa a compelling addition for a small family. Although Alexa is a fantastic educational and entertainment tool for children, parents can also use it to help manage their own lives. “Alexa’s right there to help them, whether it’s asking for a bedtime story as part of their child’s daily routine or controlling smart home appliances with voice while juggling numerous tasks,” stated Dilip R S, Director and Country Manager for Alexa, Amazon India, in a press release.
According to a study done for Amazon by Kantar, children’s screen time has decreased and their learning has improved thanks to Alexa. Ninety-five percent of parents who actively used Alexa smart speakers at home concurred that having Alexa there helps their children interact with screens less and that it serves as a companion. Up to 90% of them said Alexa assisted their children in developing their independence, learning new skills, and maintaining mental activity.
Although children may be the target audience for Amazon’s marketing of Alexa, using the voice assistant is not always beneficial for them. The gadget may impede children’s development and normalize monitoring of them, according to a 2018 The Intercept article that cited critics and pediatricians among others. Thus, if you intend to allow your kids to use Alexa or a comparable device, be sure you are comfortable with the risks by doing your own research.
Learning Tools
Parents want their children to learn skills like speaking English (50%), having good morals and manners (45%), engaging in performing arts (such as dancing, singing, and playing an instrument) (36%), arts and crafts (32%), and engaging in physical and outdoor activities (32%), in order to help them make the most of their summer vacation. A majority of 66% expressed interest in purchasing a voice-activated smart speaker that can foster abilities such as curiosity, focus, and enhanced communication.
How to Benefit from Alexa Smart Speakers
Users of Alexa smart speakers made up a portion of the survey respondents. More than 95% of parents have reported that Alexa has reduced screen time and grown to be a true companion for their child.
Child Development: Why is the sky blue, Alexa?
Alexa helps keep kids engaged, enhance communication skills, and satisfy their curiosity about learning new things by providing them with a plethora of interactive games, music, trivia, and educational features. Parents frequently ask Alexa questions like, “Alexa, tell me a bedtime story,” “Alexa, what is the spelling of dinosaurs,” “Alexa, why is the sky blue?”, “Open Wild Planet,” and more.
Parents with young children have found Alexa to be an invaluable resource. Alexa is a fantastic source of entertainment and education, offering everything from interactive games and stories about Akbar and Birbal to questions about science, history, and general knowledge as well as word definitions. It should come as no surprise that children’s tunes like Baby Shark, Chandaniya, and Twinkle Twinkle dominate the list of the top five songs that users ask Alexa to play, according to Parag Gupta, Director and Country Manager for Amazon Devices India.

Baby Shark
Erik 'Dadmonger' Stevens
Another #supersizedfic short. Writing this before I go to work so excuse typos. Inspired by this post. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
The sound of small feet hitting against the tiled floors echoed through the living room before quieting down. Pass the couch and into the kitchen. Finishing tying up the laces on his boots, Erik furrowed his thick eyebrows as he glanced back. He stood as he straightened his hoodie, smoothing the dark fabric before setting off in the direction of his daughter.
As he walked around the island, there she was looking up at the Amazon Echo device. She stuffed her hands on her tiny pockets as she spoke, "Alexa, play baby shark." Only to be met with silence. Erik chuckled as she furrowed her eyebrows, the same way he does when he's confused. "Alexa, play Baby Shark."
Standing on her tip toes, she gripped the edge of the counter as she tried to peek over it. "Baby girl, we gotta go." He squatted down to fix her scarf, adjusting it so the sides were even. "Mommy's present is waiting for us. We can play your song when we get back, aight?"
She pouted as she looked at him. Her tiny hand played with his beard as he spoke. "But I wanna dance.." She batted her lashes, pouting her little lips to win him over. Just like you did to get your way. He sighed, nodding as he pressed a kiss to her forehead. "Just one time, aight. Then we out... Alexa, play baby shark."
The intro to the song began and the happy toddler smiled up at Erik. She started her little bounce, bending her knees as she danced. Her tiny voice sang out the song as she looked up to Erik. "Dance, Baba!!!" Erik playfully rolled his eyes, putting his hands together to dance with her. He smiled as she giggled loudly. Only you and his baby girl could make him this soft.

The Perks of Motherhood
Hello, and I am new here. I am 26 years old, with a one year old son. So many people look at me as a young mom, and while I am a younger mom, I am not some teen mom or something similar to. I am a stay at home mom, and the adjustment was pretty difficult at first. From listening to my usual music like Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth and Ghost, to suddenly listening to Baby Shark 50,000 times in one day. Sometimes, more often than not, I have to also sing it. “Whaaaa?! Nooo... That song is so annoying! I would never!” Yeah. These were my thoughts at first when my son was just a tiny bundle of newborn. “My son won’t be into that stuff... Maybe I can get by without that.” Ha! Baby Shark, like with many children and toddlers, are among his favorite songs. He smiles and dances every time I do pop out with singing it. Other favorites are the Clean Up song (#blessed) and Wheels on The Bus (lawd please, no!). For the longest time, I would play them through either my Amazon Alexa Echo device or pop it onto youtube through my once beloved PlayStation 4 (I miss video games. I still love the PS4, but for different purposes now.) and pop some earbuds on with some sort of extreme metal band playing in my ear so I could tune out the kid stuff. I realized though, that through listening to many different support systems while struggling through the transition from being a half adult to full on adult with a child, that singing it to him is the way to go. Eventually, I had heard Baby Shark enough times that even when I had a few minutes to myself,  I would break down and belt out Baby Shark, trying to match the notes of the Cocomelon/ABC Kids Tv version. (Btw, LOVE Cocomelon, and the characters. I want to see a movie made. It doesn’t have to be extreme, but it would be cool to see a little more character interaction rather than nursery rhymes. Moms, dads, are ya with me?!) Around the time I started belting out these songs on my own was when the full adjustment got so much more easier. My son was about 6 months old when parenthood finally felt okay and not like some weird territory in which I didn’t belong. The hardest part (besides getting this meal thing right so that he does get the nutrition he needs.) was hearing the judgements from others. Not even judgments on my parenting tactics (everything is actually pretty well balanced and I try maintaining the household like a Toddler heaven, which is basically a daycare without having to share or eat smuckers uncrustables for lunch every day. GROSS!!) but rather judgments on just me as a person. Often I hear, “Oh you’re a young mom. It’s gonna be harder for you.” or even just being treated like I am somehow incompetent. I stand at 5′1. I am quite short even for a female, and I often get treated like I am a kid. Until people actually realize my true age (Oh, I thought you were 16.... Ten years ago, maybe!) It’s the hardest, because even peers I have to see every day often say these things. I am short! I can’t help it! I appear younger because I take care of my skin. I still have eyebags for days (thank the heavens for coffee... Sweet nectar of the gods!) but I still look closer to 16-18 years old. Ha!
I do get irritated at this, but I also self reflected a bit in recent times and realized that it isn’t just my height and unusually good skin that makes me appear younger, but it’s the very clothes I wear and overall how I present myself.
Now, there is nothing... I repeat, NOTHING wrong with being your own person while being a parent, so long as you’re not hurting yourself, your child, or anyone else. However, presentation does play a key role in how people see you. Impression is a big thing, and although there’s nothing wrong with a pair of plain jeans and a band tee with Converse Chuck Taylor high tops (me 100%) people are bound to judge you as basically the equivalent of a character off of 16 and pregnant and will assume you’re clueless.  I love wearing band tees and whatnot, it’s a comfort thing but I also want to be taken seriously.  I am nearing my thirties as every day passes, and I find it’s time people stop assuming I am 16 (youngest I got was actually 14... FROM A 19 YEAR OLD. Can anyone say, WTF?!) I do like my comfort, but I also always liked being shiny and glowy. However, coming from a family who couldn’t really afford all of the fancy, shiny things that most girls in my age group wore (Aeropostale was basically Chanel to me. Walmart or Target was the way to go.) I like being shiny, but the financial stress along with other teenage woes made me endure a nasty depression that did take a huge toll on me through my late teens, and kind of dulled my shine to a thick tarnish. A couple years before I conceived is when I finally started waxing the tarnish off and became “shiny” again. So, now that I am back in full swing and then some, I want to be extra shiny. This doesn’t mean I am going to drop $500 at Aeropostale for teeny tiny clothes (I’m not big by any means, but come on, after an 11 pound baby coming out of me, I’m bound to have some squish.) but I have recently come to find the joys of Walmart and simple baby doll solid tees, as well as “denim” skinny jeans. I can look classy, sophisticated, and casual without sacrificing comfort. Even plain white chuck taylor’s match ANY outfit! I still wear band tees and fuzzy pajama pants to bed, but during the day, I want to look more clean cut. Especially since I am growing to my near 30′s, I would like people to take me more seriously.
In conclusion, I guess this first blog from me was more or less a rant than anything insightful, and I apologize in advance for my ranting on my life. Nonetheless, from figuring out this parenthood thing, to figuring out what the heck to feed my child for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, to learning how to even cook anything more than just eggs, to figuring out more of what kind of mom I even wanted to be, I have grown so much over the course of 1 year (and three months) and I look forward to growing even more. I feel like I may be becoming one of those soccer moms who are obsessed with Starbucks, but if that is what is written, the so shall it be!
Sorry, I am a nerd. All in all, don’t let people’s negativity get you down. A perfect parent is a parent who is there and tries every day to become better and better for their children. You are already the perfect parent, despite what others may think! Be there, and love those little people as much as you possibly can before they push you away. One day, those little people are going to be big people.
Cheers! Have a wonderful week!
-Bekah

Alexa Easter Eggs and Hidden Features
Last Updated: A day ago
New Products and Features: Amazon has a slew of new Echo devices ready for pre-order and exciting features like updates to Alexa Hunches and celebrity voices like Samuel L. Jackson.
Most people use Alexa for practical applications like setting timers or building shopping lists, but we wanted to see how many hidden features Alexa has to offer.
Armed with a Second Generation Echo and an Echo Show, we hunted for Alexa’s hidden talents and extras. During our testing, we found some useful (and not so useful) features.
Cheer on Your Favorite Teams
Did you know Alexa is a sports fan? Not only can you get the schedule and odds for upcoming games, but you can also set up a betting pool for your fantasy league.
A recent update also allows Alexa to provide local scores upon request and cheer on your kids’ team. If you have smart lights, Alexa can change them to match the colors of your favorite team. Add some snacks, and you’ve got an awesome game night ahead of you.
Play Games with Alexa
Like the apps on your phone or tablet, Amazon Echo has all sorts of abilities to unlock via “Alexa Skills.” Alexa has story games, word games, trivia, and quizzes you can take by simply asking. We found an adventure game called Hunt the Yeti that took us through a dark cave in search of a monster (unfortunately, it found us first).
Alexa Skills aren’t just limited to games. You can enable Skills for health, media, cooking, and your smart home too.
Music Streaming
It’s common knowledge that Amazon Echos play music, but did you know Alexa performs its own music?
If you ask politely, Alexa can sing original songs and even perform barbershop quartet songs alone. You can also ask for a song of the day when you aren’t sure what to play or to sample an artist to see if they suit your taste.
Dad Jokes, Limericks, and Riddles
Alexa is full of silly puns, dad jokes, limericks, poems, and riddles. Amazon also partnered with Jimmy Fallon so Alexa can play parts of his monologues and jokes.
The Amazon Echo is a big fan of pop culture too. It knows responses to famous quotes from Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and other iconic references.
There’s not much Alexa doesn’t have a reply to. Thanks to the sleuths on Reddit, we found a few extra eggs to try with your Echo.
Katie asking Alexa to speak faster, and faster, and faster!
Try some of these tricks: “Alexa, speak faster.” “Alexa, give me a hard-boiled Easter egg.” “Alexa, what’s the loneliest number?” “Alexa, who you gonna call?” “Alexa, what is your quest?” “Alexa, what does the fox say?”
Homework Help
Alexa can also be a helpful study buddy when you need one. Ask her about definitions, spelling, basic and advanced math, metric and imperial conversions, and other problems tripping you up. While she can give you the answers to a lot of questions, you still have to show your work.
Alexa in the Kitchen
The Alexa Show is a staple in many people’s kitchens. Looking up recipes and setting timers isn’t a hidden Alexa gem, but there are a few tricks you might not know. The Alexa Wine Finder can help you pair your meal with the right kind of wine—just ask. If dinner doesn’t work out the way you planned or cooking isn’t on the menu for the night, you can always ask for restaurant hours for top-rated spots nearby.
Mindfulness and Health
Alexa can help you keep your mind and body healthy with a few tricks. Ask your Echo for meditation guidance for a quick moment of quiet. Your voice assistant will guide you through breathing exercises to sharpen your focus and keep you calm throughout the day. If workouts are more your speed, Alexa can learn skills like the 7-minute workout that will guide you through a basic total-body training regimen.
You can add both of these skills to Alexa’s routines. This feature allows you to program your Echo with a series of commands based on a phrase you say. For example, when you tell Alexa good morning, she can give you news, traffic, a guided meditation, and remind you to start your workout, all with one command phrase.
Alexa’s Home Automation Skills
It’s no secret that Alexa is helpful when it comes to home automation. A smart hub like Amazon Echo can help you start automating your home by acting as the brain for your smart home system. It connects all the components so you can control them from your phone or tablet.
Alexa is compatible with an impressive range of smart home devices and brands. From smart light bulbs and wall outlets to garage door openers and security systems, you can set up routines from Alexa and control them from the Echo app.
How Real People Use Alexa
We asked a few of our coworkers how they used their Amazon Echo. These were our favorite answers.
“Two words: ‘Baby Shark’” —Jesse
“She controls the lights in my bedroom, I make her set alarms for me, I have her play rain noises when I sleep, I ask her the weather every morning, and I use her to play music from Spotify like Randi.” —Riana
“We’ve used her to help sing happy birthday.” —Kaylee
“I have the main one in my kitchen, then the smaller ones downstairs at my bar, and another downstairs in my son’s room. I use it as an intercom system to tell our son it’s time to eat, or to get in the shower cause it’s time for bed, etc. And of course, my 7-year-old daughter uses Alexa to tell her jokes, and will ask arbitrary questions like, ‘how many brains does an earthworm have?’”  —Jason
“I asked Alexa to make me a sandwich, and she said, ‘Poof. You’re a sandwich.’” - Brianne
“Alexa turns off my light, plays music, and reads the news to me while I’m cooking. Also, recently started having her add grocery items to my Prime Now cart which has been soooo handy.” —Tina

Ventipop #226 :: Good To Be Back
I know. I know. It’s been a spell. I’ve been off cheating on Ventipop with some other business excursions. My hope moving forward is to be a bit more monogamist with Ventipop and update at least once per week. I’ve also taken down the ads from all new posts. I’m not making any money unless generous readers like you choose to click on the Patreon button and give what you can. I enjoy finding reassuring stories which validate humanity is not all but lost. I hope I can keep ‘em coming. If you can’t give money, do the next best thing and tell a few people about Ventipop. I’d appreciate it. Now…for the first time in a long time…Let’s grind.

Pre-Order Here In her memoir, DiFranco recounts her early life from a place of hard-won wisdom, combining personal expression, the power of music, feminism, political activism, storytelling, philanthropy, entrepreneurship, and much more into an inspiring whole. In these frank, honest, passionate, and often funny pages is the tale of one woman's eventful and radical journey to the age of thirty. Ani's coming of age story is defined by her ethos of fierce independence--from being an emancipated minor sleeping in a Buffalo bus station, to unwaveringly building a career through appearances at small clubs and festivals, to releasing her first album at the age of 18, to consciously rejecting the mainstream recording industry and creating her own label, Righteous Babe Records. In these pages, as in life, she never hesitates to challenge established rules and expectations, maintaining a level of artistic integrity that has impressed many and antagonized more than a few. Ani continues to be a major touring and recording artist as well as a celebrated activist and feminist, standing as living proof that you can overcome all personal and societal obstacles to be who you are and to follow your dreams.

Amazon Alexa may bite your head off if asked to play that darn ‘Baby Shark’ song
Amazon's Alexa will do what you ask of it, but that doesn't mean it likes it. The voice assistant will go on a little rant if it is asked to play the irritatingly catchy kid's song Baby Shark.
