So, I know the general fan consensus is that Jon and Martin both break their promises to each other that they made back in 191. But in the end, I think they do kinda keep them? At least from a certain point of view

Martin's promise was to let Jon go, which you could argue he does when he stabs him, as there is clearly a possibility that Jon will simply die, and Martin has to accept that. And Jon promises to not go off and try and martyr himself, which okay, he did rather fail that one. But he also promises to try and live, which I would say he fulfils in invoking the possibility of Somewhere Else existing and that they might end up there. Even if it's a slim hope at survival, at being okay, he does still try in the end

Now, whether either of them would see any of it that way is a completely different question!!

If I recall correctly, it was the art and discussion following this episode, specifically regarding Jon being canon ace, the Hot Jon Rights of the smiting, and the general consensus that those two things were not mutually exclusive that finally made me throw up my metaphorical hands and say "Fine, I'll listen to your dumb horror podcast! I probably won't like it cause I Don't Do Horror, but I'll fucking give it a try"

And now here I am, still here over two years after the finale, and it's even got me writing fic again

Sasha you can't say Martin has bad self preservation instincts and then immediately turn around and talk about how you followed a monster to an abandoned pub in the middle of the night without telling anyone where you were going

Honestly, this why it bugs me so much when people say things would've been better if she were Archivist instead of Jon, as she's clearly shown herself to be at least as impulsive as him when it comes to plans, so she likely would get marked just as easily, and her unwillingness to believe Martin (and Jon, who DID) about how dangerous Prentiss is to me doesn't speak well of her likelihood of keeping everyone safe better than Jon did. Nor is there anything that I can recall in her few appearances that would indicate she'd really be any quicker at putting things together than Jon was. Frankly we just don't have enough information about her to draw any kind of conclusions like that

Don't get me wrong, I love Sasha, I just think the complex and interesting person we get a glimpse of in canon is far more compelling to me than the frankly rather boring "only one with the brain cell", etc, that seems so prevalent in fanon

The Magnus Archives is full of people who make choices and make mistakes and nobody is an exception. Sasha would doom the world in her own special way and we love her for it <3

Genuinely curious what people think. There's a lot of fix-its out there that have Martin coming back early or interfering with Jon reading in some way, but do people think there really was any way the ritual could be stopped? Or was the paper statement pretty much superfluous once Jon started reading?

(Personally, I don't think there was any real way to stop it, and Martin being there or not would have been irrelevant)

Anyways, sure is nice this episode only lasted five minutes, huh??
