This design was originally for some school assignment last month but I really liked the design and so did others so it stuck around and made this eventually lol.

Low-poly style recreations

256fes did not leave me satisfied so I came up with a sort of challenge for myself; Replicate the model style of various low poly games and adapt a Lima to them. I've had this idea for some time but finally got to make it. It was very fun to do.

The games I chose were Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario 64, Minecraft, and Katamari Damacy. All games I love and have a special connection to.

Banjo-Kazooie (1998):

This one probably took the most effort out of them all but I liked how it came out. He looks so goofy. It took the longest to rig as well since the whole body was a single mesh.

Super Mario 64 (1996):

While I grew up with the DS version, I still really like how the original game looks. This one was very simple to do. So much that it almost resembles the model from Soul Trail lol. I think he looks great with that type of eyes.

Minecraft (2011):

I finally got to try Blockbench for this one. It is very fun and easy. Probably my favorite one. If I have time, I could learn how to mod him into the game at some point.

Katamari Damacy (2004):

One of my favorite games ever that brings me so much happiness. That aside, he looks quite unnerving lol. Was a bit of a challenge since there weren't many analogue points of reference.

2024 is the year of the Metal Dragon

Hope you all can accomplish your goals! Remember to give it your all.

I hope to finish Dragon March. It would be a very funny coincidence. Along with that, I would like to make other game projects as well. Perhaps smaller experiences but still good for practice. I was thinking of experimenting with First-Person Controls. I'll dedicate some time for commissions of course. I just have nothing to announce right now.

I had a great time starting my blog properly this year an I am thankful for the support this year. I shall continue next year.

Whatever the case is, let's hope this year is good for us all and our ambytions. See ya next year

256fes 2024 attempt

I love 256 and here is my attempt at it for this year. Last year I could not do it due to so much commission work.

Her name is Rossi. I struggled to get her head to look right and ended up with something nice I think. Her design has existed since 2021 but never did anything with it. She works at some kind of office place.

I actually made a video about my process with this. I never do this so this is an extremely rare occurrence. Let me know what y'all think.

I really enjoy doing this challenge. I feel I get a lot better every year. Look forward to next one.

Ale (Common Alebrije)

A struggling artist from Sector 1. He claims to have arrived from a distant galaxy. He owns an art shop where he sells his paintings, crafts and supplies. He likes to paint with his tail rather than use proper brushes and he is rather good at it.

Many creative people in the Essence Realm have what is called Artistic Essence. This is a kind of magic that lets people create with their hearts. It can also give life to their works among other qualities. He is happy to give art advice but isn't the best teacher.

First art of him. He was the winner in a poll of 3 characters I asked people in my server to vote for to add to the game.

His art shop is where he also lives in. On the top floor, you can find his room, while the bottom is for the shop. You can find all sorts of fun art supplies and crafts he has been working on lately.

Ale has frog legs, the body and head of a dragon, wings of an eagle, snake teeth, and a bushy mane and tail. He has become one of my favorite designs I've made. Who doesn't like dragons anyway.

Inspiration

He is an Alebrije. These are Mexican folk art sculptures typically made of paper or cardboard. They usually depict fantastical animals with chimera-like properties and brightly colored patterns.

He is not made of cardboard though.

Amby (Semi-demon)

A very jovial semi demonic Samaritan. She lives in the Demon's Domain and is an important figure loved by many. She has the important mission of spreading positivity and make a better image for the Demon race. She strongly believes in the power of love and never ever wants any conflict to ever happen. She can be very pushy with this goal.

She is half demon and half... something else? This has given her a completely unique form compared to the rest of the demons. She has very strong Demonic Influence and uses it for healing powers and making people feel more positive, even when they don't want to. She joined Pinote and Dynas to travel together around the Essence Realm to bring happiness and a better image for the demons. Fyreon really despises her forced positivity and happiness regardless the situation.

"If you don't think about the pain, it won't hurt you!"

She gets into trouble frequently by trying to befriend everyone she meets no matter how aggressive they can be. Including monsters and enemies. These encounters have left her with permanent tail damage. Despite this, she will not change her ways.

Backstory

Amby was raised by the Demon King. Like always though, it was his Jester who did most of the work, Jokestar. She grew up with a caring family who taught her to do her best to bring sunshine into everyone's lives. Her origin is a mystery. She loves Jokestar as if he were her true father.

Upon learning of how demons were perceived by the general public, she set her goal to improve everyone's lives and hopefully make a better image for the demons.

Inspiration

I love axolotls if it wasn't clear lol. I simply wanted to have more characters who were axolotls. She is not an axolotl entirely though.

Her backstory is not that deep like Dynas. She works well as an opposite for Fyreon though considering he is always pessimistic and sad. Axolotls look pretty happy anyways.

Her name and mine have no connection. Mine is a shortening of Ambystoman while hers is just Amby. Her name was made first before I started using it as well. Both derive from Ambystoma Mexicanum, the scientific name for Axolotls.

Together they get in the way of the main characters trying to do better than them but only causing problems for everyone.

Pentapus (Pentapoda Lucerna)

Their tentacles can regenerate if cut but please don't do that. Their innards glow intensely due to their chemical composition. They like hanging out in darkened areas to light them up.

They speak with soft wailing whispers that might sound ghastly but they never intend any harm. Their soft tender bodies make for a very tasteful meal when cooked right but don't tell anyone I said that.

Despite their many appendages, they walk like this, leaving their back limb as a sort of tail.

These might have been inspired by the Baked Yammonsters enemy from Mother 3, one of my favorite games. Other than that, I simply must've thought having an odd numbered-tentacled alien creature would have been funny. I was sort of into drawing faces in anguish as well at the time I concepted it; around 2019 or so.

Magellany (Redo) (Nebulite)

Move out of the way, here comes the greatest adventurer in the whole damn galaxy: Magellany!

"Just call me Mag!"

She is brave, strong and... acts before thinking. She gets irritated easily, especially when people get in her way, calling them get-in-the-ways. Magellany is very rude and honest, never holding back on any comments.

She is a Nebulite, a peculiar species of sentient nebulae. Her body composition makes it possible to morph into any form as she wishes. She is not confined to a humanoid body. Her preferred weapon is her trusty Scimistar.

This magical sword is a projection of her soul which is located on her chest, in the shape of a crystal. Her power comes from this object and is also her weak point.

Nebulites have incredible capabilities for Cosmic Magic. While not on the same level as someone like Mr. Sky, they are capable of creating spontaneous life. They do so to help with tasks or do jobs that might be dangerous for them. These rudimentary organisms can last as long as the user needs them to. Their intelligence is very limited though.

She is not good with this ability though since nobody taught her and so the most she can do is use raw life energy to create primitive beings that she uses as weapons.

In Soul Trail, her special attack is making a little dude that goes in a straight line and damages far away opponents. Once I restart development I plan on adding more of this ability to her move set.

She claims to hear voices from space. Her favorite animals are tarantulas and she really likes long sleeved clothing along with robes.

Backstory

She lives in a solitary planet with her older sister, Nube. Their parents are long gone and so her sister takes care of her and usually does what is best for her. Mag attends navigation classes at some kind of academy and she hates it there. Often daydreaming of what could be is she were able to sail out into space on a ship of her own with treasures to find, foes to defeat, and people to befriend. All in her own way without anyone telling her what to do.

Beneath all her harshness hides a lonely girl who only wants friends and a life she can have control over. Her short-lived creations are the only creatures who stay by her side.

Her creations only live for minutes. She likes to sit on the roof of her house and talk to them

One day something really big would happen that would change her whole life...

Inspiration

As mentioned in the post, she is a nebula; a space cloud. She is meant to be the Magellanic Cloud (hence her name) and her coloration is taken from NGC 2074. The powers Nebulites have of creating life is a reference to how all planets are born from nebulae, this could eventually lead to the creation of life within these planets.

She was the first character made for this project and has gone through some changes over the years.

As for her clothes and design, I was really into Kirby at the time and so many of my early designs sort of looked like spacey Kirby-ish inspired creatures.

Geemo (Gymnosomata Fantasma)

Another pretty common species of creatures that inhabit many Sectors in the Essence Realm. Just like Limas, they hail from the oceans of some planet at some point. Their innards emit a soft light they can control at will. This is but a vestigial aspect that serves no purpose outside of the sea though.

Geemos, just like most other common organisms in the Essence Realm, have many occupations all around space. They are often caught staring off into space and tend to be forgetful. Despite not depending on Limas for nourishment since a long time, you will usually find Geemos where there are Limas. It's not unusual to find them living together. It seems some kind of primordial sense draws these species to one another...

Inspiration

Just like Limas, Geemos are also a kind of free-floating mollusk called Sea Angels. These consume Sea Butterflies, the species that Limas are based on, explaining that link both species have.

Spyroll (Redo) (Cometling)

Sorry for the lack of activity, been really caught up with stuff lately. It is the holidays after all. I plan to do the last main character before the year ends.

"Oh jeez, i-is this really necessary? Can I skip this introduction thing? I'm not sure people would care to kno-"

Here is this shooting star guy, Spyroll! He is-

"Aaa! you don't have to say it so loud!"

Ahem, he is shy, reserved but very inquisitive. He gets scared very easily, embarrasses himself often, probably wets the bed but if he gets pushed too far, he can-

"What?! No I don't do that. I am not a coward!"

Spyroll is a Cometling, strange beings made of energy. Despite this, he is cold to the touch. They can use their energy to help with their daily tasks or in Spyroll's case, as a weapon! He shoots blast projectiles of his own energy to attack enemies. This makes him great for ranged combat. Some of his special attacks include him blasting off his entire arm to use as a missile. Don't worry it grows back instantly.

Unfortunately, I never got around to programming any of the other 2 protagonists so I don't have anything to show regarding their combat abilities. He would've focused on projectile attacks and somewhat ranged combat. More so than the others.

Cometlings are notable for having a "core" in the center of their bodies. This artifact serves as their soul and is the source of their powers. In fact, it has the energy that keeps them alive for their entire lifespan, technically making them immortal beings that don't require sustenance. However, once this core runs out of energy, the individual fizzles out in a bang and dies for good. They are not invincible but can live for a long, long time.

Spyroll's core/soul

Cometlings are proficient with electrical mechanisms and anything related to them. This is due to the fabric of energy that encompasses their bodies. A quality that enabled them to communicate through energy charges. An instant language only they can understand. Without needing to convey expressions, their faces were rendered obsolete and time got rid of them eventually.

Cometlings. I should mention that I occasionally draw Spyroll with a face just for fun. Perhaps this is what his face would look like if Cometlings still had one.

Spyroll gets nervous quite easily. Despite this, he is rather optimistic and sees life in the best way possible trying to find hope in the direst of situations. Cometlings have a dust tail that is often treated as a sort of hair. Spyroll keeps his wavy and long.

Backstory

Spyroll lives in a futuristic society. Cometling innovations have progressed so much over time due to their semi-immortality that their cities have become monolithic mazes of houses, factories, and shipyards. This much progress has caused a mass disconnect among people though.

Spyroll is a solitary guy with little to no acquaintances. He enjoys repairing and creating contraptions in his spare time. Sharing his latest works through the Cometling equivalent of the internet. He is quite well known but nobody truly knows him or cares for his true self. This has made him a very isolated and introverted dude.

He only finds comfort in his hobby. One he is incredibly talented at.

With so much time to live but nobody to share it with, what even is his purpose?

If only someone took the time to check on him. Maybe things will change on one eventful day...

Inspiration

As his species' name suggests, Cometlings are anthropomorphic comets. His body is the Gas tail while his "hair" is the Dust tail. His head is the Nucleus.

Just like Cometlings, comets eventually fizzle out after thousands of years. It is a natural part of their existence.

As for his design, he was inspired by George Méliès' The Eclipse, in which his wife is seen playing a "Wandering Star". You can see the references pretty clearly lol. I designed Spyroll years ago and this design really stuck with me. He originally even had a dress too but changed it to shorts cause it would be easier to animate.

I'll be honest, I treat him quite poorly for being a main character. I barely have art of him or his backstory that figured out. I do plan to make more for him eventually.

Once again, I completely forgot about his current design outfit lol. It was inspired by Mamoru from Mamorukun Curse. I thought he looked cool and I love the music from the game. Haven't played it though but I wanna.

Appreciate all these dragons

Something for the day. First post of 2024 as well!

Could not decide which of my dragon characters to draw so I just did them all. From left to right:

The Dragolm: The main boss of Soul Trail Chapter 2. Usually pretty docile.

Glauker: An NPC from Chapter 2 I haven't introduced yet. They are quite lazy.

Metal Dragon: A common metal dragon from Dragon March. They really like following Cereal.

Aster: 🌼

Cereal: The main guy from Dragon March. He is a great leader!

Mr. Dragon: The rich and greedy owner of the Gilded Hoard.

Star Dragon (Adult): The big guy in the back. Their eggs are harvested for Stardust making them an endangered species.

Mr. Sky (Real name: Sir Atmosph)

A very powerful sorcerer from Sector 1. He keeps the rhythm of life within the Essence Realm in motion and keeps people within his zone safe. He lives in the Orrery Palace and along with Moon Mage and Star Mage as his apprentices. They travel the sector helping people and offering rooms for others to stay along with knowledge.

Mr. Sky utilizes Cosmic Magic, the most powerful and prominent type of magic in the universe. Capable of creating and modifying planets, he oversees the life of all planetary systems and destroys planets as he needs to create new ones, continuing the cycle of life. Some deem him as evil for his actions but he is just doing his job.

The Orrery Palace (Contains a library, observatory, chambers, gardens, a big clock and of course, an orrery)

Holding his Soul, the source of power for the entire structure and his powers.

Inspiration

This character was inspired greatly by ELO (Electric Light Orchestra), my favorite band. His color scheme is based on the band's spaceship along with his name being a very obvious reference to their most popular song which is far from my favorite but felt it fit him.

Paintergeist (Flammae Tincta)

A peculiar entity with a colorful gas-like body. It is constantly shifting and changing size. It does not remember how it got to be in such state yet holds a lot of stories that might be interesting to hear.

Their lightweight body allows them to freely change their size and appearance along with the ability to float off the ground. The giant skull in their centers are from unidentified creatures. The flames on their horns respond to their emotional states.

Old concept art of them. Done in MS Paint in around 2020.

They roam in random places looking for anyone to talk to or observe. They are completely harmless save for their fiery horns. They might be some kind of Prickly that became like this somehow.

Inspiration

The origin for these is weird. Some years ago, someone visiting my house did this quick random painting with some left over watercolor paints out of boredom I suppose. I thought it looked cool and designed a character out of it.

Sadly, the person doesn't remember ever doing it.

I will admit the model is quite janky looking as it's old and I can't be bothered to update it but it works for a minor NPC.

Shadow Dude (Ambulans Umbra)

A little ghostly creature that really likes nature. He prefers living in the wild in his little camp all by himself. He can befriend any creature very easily including enemies. He is somewhat critical of your actions.

He lives in the middle of Sidereal Woods in his humble tree trunk abode. Shadow Dude's life is simple and he likes it that way. He loves talking about animals or plants with everyone but prefers being alone.

A look at his house. Still a work in progress so it's missing any kind of furniture or details.

Despite wanting to live a peaceful life, he can't help but intensely demonstrate his discontent against anyone who does not respect the environment or animals.

Inspiration

In case it wasn't obvious, this guy is heavily inspired by Snufkin from the Moomins, a character I really admire (although I know he wouldn't want that lol). From his green attire and hat to his passion for the natural world. As a lover of nature and its wonders myself, I simply had to have a character who shared those sentiments in this project. He is one of the earliest designs for this game.

Fyreon (Redo) (Emberonian)

Here we have the last main character, Fyreon. He is rather nonchalant and slow. He can be cold for a living fire and doesn't like being bothered. Pessimistic is one way to describe him and he just likes sleeping rather than dealing with pro-

"Keep it down, will you? I'm trying to sleep. I didn't ask you to write this thing anyway..."

Fyreon is an Emberonian, a species of fire elemental that is generally proficient with magic. He wears a set of hardened clay armor. This protects his fire body from being extinguished as well as protecting others from his flames. It is very heavy making him a slow but strong warrior.

Emberonians have a malleable body of fire and can fit in any kind of hollow object and use it as armor. Once inside, their bodies accommodate and create holes for their eyes and mouth. Once outside again, the object retakes its original form with no alterations.

He uses his staff to cast fire spells and the swirl on top is his Soul and the source of his magic. It is his main weapon. As mentioned in the previous post, I never programmed him so I don't have anything to show regarding his combat capabilities.

Those wisps around the top move and react to Fyreon as he casts spells and does attacks. They might seem alive but are simply projections of some sort. The bottom of his staff simply fades away.

Emberonians. All soldiers wear the same types of clay armor. All masks are one of a kind and belong to an individual for life.

Fyreon's diet consists of eating rocks and minerals like crystals. He is not allowed in jewelry stores anymore. He likes salamanders but laments not being able to swim or touch water with his real hands. He never takes off his armor much less his mask.

His mask gives him a lizard tongue.

Backstory

Fyreon is a captain. He leads his squadron into war against an evil race of water creatures. Both species compete for territory on a small planet where the landscape consists of arid deserts and valleys contrasting damp swamps and lakes. The Emberonians are slowly losing and having their territory purposefully flooded.

He is a strong leader and takes care of his people very well. He is loved by many and often seeks a quick and effective way to solve problems. He makes sure to show his best to his people in hopes of keeping everyone motivated and hopeful.

A good team

He hides his feelings of hopelessness and crushing sadness so nobody else would feel disillusioned. But what would happen if you suddenly lost your reason to keep a positive attitude but could not remember why? Would your true feelings come out? One day he would find out...

It is honestly very hard to talk much about the protagonists' backstories without having to deal with heavy spoilers. In short, all 3 lose their memories at the start of the game before meeting. Despite having no memories, their emotions remain.

Foul creature

Inspiration

Arguably my most popular character (or maybe it's Lima). He has quite the redesign history. Originally, he started out as some sort of bird magician guy. I had been playing a lot of Shovel Knight at the time and really liked Plague Knight. He seemed to have an axe as well instead of a staff. He also had nothing to do with fire.

I refined this concept and gave him sort of gill-like appendages to his mask. These would eventually become horns. I then would go back to the gill idea and outright make them gills instead and give him more axolotl characteristics.

His fire attributes were inspired by a drawing from an artist I really like. Panapana on twitter. Mainly this cool drawing of an Axolotl with fire gills. As soon as I saw this, I got the idea of making him a fire creature whose armor made him somewhat look like an axolotl but he himself wasn't one. Salamanders were closely associated with fire in ancient times so it kind of makes sense.

I never designed the other race of creatures Emberonians fight. Just like they are evil for his species, this race considers Emberonians evil the same way.
