good morning, kaz! i'm so sorry i missed this last night, i was busy singing my lungs out very poorly at karaoke, ahaha.

that cocktail sounds fantastic, i will take two, pls & thank you. whiskey (and scotch whisky particularly) is my preferred liquor most of the time, though gin does edge ahead a little bit in the summer when i enjoy a nice fizz with fresh fruit. that cocktail sounds perfectly up my alley! <3

tv shows:

ted lasso. i was very late to this one, but just binged all three seasons and really enjoyed it. on apple.

BEEF. it's sooooooo goood and bizarre and wonderful in the worst (best) ways. on netflix.

trial & error. was an nbc comedy over too soon. on peacock, i think.

the river. likewise cancelled early, but it's horror on the amazon and i loved it a lot. idk where to find this one, but i'm sure it's streaming someplace as all things are these days.

not dead yet. which finished its first season recently is an easy watch & pretty funny. the MC is very relatable in an, "i am a mess" sort of way alsjdf;adfs. i think this is nbc, but i watched it on hulu.

movies:

everything everywhere all at once. i can't wait to watch this again. it was my first time in a non-socially distanced movie theatre post-quarantine and it was such a joy to hold my spouse's hand while i laughed my ass off and cried and yelled. love this fucking thing (as does everyone else, as they should).

you won't be alone. this is horror. body horror. it's pretty messy in parts but so so sooooooo soooooooooooooo good. it's also primarily in macedonian with subtitles and i'm not sure how hard it would be to track down.

the impostors. with stanley tucci and oliver platt is a comedy from my youth that i still think is one of the best of all time.

a goofy movie. idk, y'all, i just showed this to my spouse because it was referenced in an episode of atlanta (another great fucking tv show) and it's still just so funny and heartwarming and the music they made for powerline is so good.

spiderman: across the spider-verse. haven't even seen this yet but my god i want to so badly and i just know it's gonna be killer because the first one blew my mind.

anime (i'm probably not gonna come up with much here you haven't already seen or know about tbh but let's see):

blue period. especially as an artist, i think you might enjoy this one. i binged it in like a day and a half and thoroughly enjoyed it all very much. on netflix.

maid-sama! i actually enjoyed watching this anime so much that i then went back and read the whole manga because i needed to know how it ended. it was cute and expected and exactly the sort of low-stakes shojo i needed at the time.

ghost hunt!.i fucking love this little horror anime and am so disappointed it didn't get to go longer. there is a manga and also a light novel that are very worthwhile if you ever have the time.

i think three is all you're gonna get outta me for this category, but i hope something there sparks your fancy! thanks so much! <3

disclaimer: i’ve read the manga and seen 1998 trigun so i know whats up.

The Tesla scene. god. they made it much more gruesome and i loved it. KEEPING HER ALIVE ooooh that hurts. but i wish they had a whole episode to explain tesla, what the humans did to her and how this drastically changed the twins’ POV of humanity and their place in the world. bc god that scene was only like less than 2 mins long and i dont think they did her much justice. maybe they will dive into it more but i doubt it since they have to deal with A GIANT PLANT MONSTER

that thing is gorgeous btw. the animation style is so good, that doesnt need to be said but god the studio is using the medium so well. im sure some botany fanatic is gushing about the flora symbolism. and i’ve no clue how July will perish now. anyway, vash is gonna feel SO guilty after this. oh goodness.

Wolfwood wasn’t in a hurry to leave. he didnt want to get involved but he wasn’t rushing to the exit to move on with his life. he was hanging around just in case. of what? idk. this tristamp WW is a bit more mysterious for me and i like it. He didnt make Meryl leave either. didnt bother to stop her. that says so much about him.

oh and poor meryl. for a sec i saw the vines unleash in the room and thought it was gonna be like that volume where she sees what Vash’s feels/sees bc she touches his feathers. i got so scared. bc damn it. every moment in the manga has its impact and trying to shuffle them around to fit this new story hurts me personally /sarcasm. again, i LOVE this new show. im thankful for this new cake but sometimes i see remnants of the manga and i miss the original story. anyway, i cant wait to see what will happen to July, WW and Meryl.

also wtf happy birthday twins i fucking guess. idk if it was hinted before but what a jumpscare. but not a terrible jumpscare as the fucking plants being impregnated by Vash or Knives of the fucking core or whatever the fuck. like yeah. i know the metaphors of motherhood and shit but fucking. i didnt need that imagery personally. and i dont wanna think about it anymore. yall can have it. whatever. it just makes me uncomfy, nothing serious lol

it seems like they keep touching, briefly, on plot points from the manga but not exploring them fully. and i get it. its hard to explain anything from og trimax in 22 minutes, much less 12 episodes. and also i cant blame them so much. maybe watching this live is skewing my view of the entirety of the show. i am definitely re watching this when its finished. i fucking love trigun. and so i won’t comment much on the event order or whatever. i should just let it go. Its a new show with remnants of the manga and its so cool.

nah yowapeda s5 was crazy. they just randomly cut out two characters and their race. they gave them superstar seiyuu too..

my personal theory is the network (it was airing on a different tv network this time too) really didnt like the gay yandere ish backstory and made them cut them at the last second... i mean it what makes the most sense. i wanna say it led to all the weird budget issues later too. but does that justify how bland the direction was too? like its the same director, but suddenly there was absolutely no dynamic camera whatsoever, shots were boring as hell so most races hit like wet noodle. seeing flashbacks from s4 made my stomach hurt from the difference

also no c part!!! that was honestly the worst part!!! yowapeda has always had a c part at the end of every episode for four seasons. did they have to scrap all of them bc the two cut characters cameo'd too much in them and they couldnt pick and choose or else itll look weird?

i remember it actually hit me really hard the first few episodes being bad because they replaced the relevant race with literal whos at such a critical point, and it had no impact whatsoever, and on top of that no funny c part... im not kidding, like i got genuinely depressed over it

the flashbacks and anything not involving racing were REALLY GOOD it was the usual yowapeda quality!!!

its fine overall as a full package. but like. what the hell happened...

idk, i got really sad, i put my manga read on a pause because i was like well the anime is definitely gonna do it justice so i wanna keep it fresh! i could have just read it years ago and the impact would have been better bc everything just felt like a matter of course. doesn't help the outcome of IH2 kind of feels... wrong even within the story itself (idt most people disagree with this)

the anime was pretty so-so compared to how god tier the first four seasons were. (ok, s3 i have my gripes with after reading the manga but its still VERY GOOD)

AI: The Somnium Files - a fantastic game I highly recommend if you like weird characters and stories and are a fan of visual novels/adventure games <3 super fun

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim - AMAZING cast of characters and fun gameplay I didn’t want to stop playing, great plot I will be thinking about forever…

Bugsnax - very funny and cute and I loved catching every bugsnax and the fun characters I want to play the 2nd one when it comes out

Psyconauts - a cult classic for a reason. Loved it’s style but the final level is so bad I would not wish it upon my worst enemy. Looking forward to finishing 2 one day

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - I haven’t gotten to finish this one yet (I got 80 hours in okay??) but I’m incredibly excited to get back to it. GOTY BABY!!! GAME OF ALL TIME!!

Nier Automata - ALSO THE GAME OF ALL TIME this is a must play it broke me it healed me it made me see the beauty of art and story telling that games are capable of it’s really just fantastic. for the love of god do not stop after ending A. Love this game so much.

I Want to Hold Aono-kun so Badly I Could Die - fantastic supernatural/horror themed romance and one of my favorite romances I read this year

Black Clover - made me realize how truly trash bnha is at writing women lmao. Good battle shonen but nothing overwhelming special about it. It understands the basics and does them all well

D Gray Man - didn’t catch up on this one yet but it’s got great characters and some of the worst action paneling I’ve ever seen.

Dungeon Meshi - y’all were right it’s funny and can be very touching at time

A Condition Called Love - I can fix him romance but make it not feel toxic the manga. Super cute I love them.

Toilet Bound Hanako-kun - I feel like I started this last year but I know that can’t be true… supernatural + romance + cute art. It’s made me cry.

Jujutsu Kaisen - loved this baby and then I caught up to the current arc and it was the worst shit of all time. Megumi my depressed king.

Cardcaptor Sakura - I think this is my first CLAMP manga I finished. LOVED sakura and shaoran they are so small. so many good aspects to this series and then all of the age gap bullshit is there so IDK hard to recommend but I enjoyed reading all of the parts that weren't about horrible relationships

Horimiya - CUTE I love romance where you get to follow them as a couple <3 there were a few bad spots in it (miyamura's piercings being compared to self harm in that one chapter.......???????) but over all a good read

Astra: Lost in Space - fun scifi adventure with good characters. pretty short and easy read. its fun

You Got Me, Senpai - SO CUTE one of the best relationships I've read in a manga. adorable.

Drowning Love - verrry good and complex, a mature story with darker elements (check out trigger warnings for it) and a very engaging coming of age story about two kinda horrible kids with too much attention pointed their way living in a small town. anime adaptation WHEN

Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty - super cute romance, supernatural elements. loved it

Orange - think this would be a perfect read if the time travel element wasn't explained like That and also Suwa >>> Kakeru and what they did to his character in that bonus story was just mean

Goodbye, Eri - everyone should read this. beautiful, stays with you. fantastic exploration on what arts purpose is

A Kiss, For Real - it was cute. the summary makes it sound more romance focused than it actually is, there is a lot of focus on the MCs journey of growth and what she wants to do with her life. Romance was cute but not exceptionally so

Takopi's Original Sin - overhyped as hell. depressing outlook on life. thought some of it was fine but it is overall too cruel to say i enjoyed it, especially with a cast this young

The Girl From The Other Side - I actually 100% cannot remember if I read this last year or not. anyways. BEAUTIFUL art, great characters, compelling mysteries

Junji Ito's Dissolving Classroom - not his best work by far, but it is one of his earliest so I don't care too much.

Spotless Love: This Love Cannot Be Any More Beautiful. - I haven't been adding the ones that aren't popular unless I really enjoyed them, but idk this one is just so wild I felt the need to throw it on here. girl who loves to clean x child assassin is certainly a relationship dynamic. they're funny

Akiba Maid War - this is not very good but it is entertaining so...

Ano Hana - rewatched this one finally! still one of the best dramas of all time. did you know childe and jintan have the same english VA bc I know. I know this now.

BNA - the plot point about how the furries were victims in the literal real world holocaust made me kind of hate this I won't lie. also the best friend fox girl Nazuna is one of the most unbearable characters ever. when you lead a cult pretending to be an important religious figure to a culture you are not part of because you like attention i guess?? it is not a good look in a show that already deals so heavily in antisemetic themes & imagery for it's villains.... sorry to whoever recommended this to me :( great animation

Dance Dance Danseur - did not like the MC but I did like the FMC and Rival character, good animation. I read the authors shoujo title Drowning Love this year and it should've gotten the adaptation TBH but this was fine, last few episodes carried

Death Parade - rewatched this one this year and it is still amazing. OP is still one of the best out there.

Do It Yourself!! - not incredibly remarkable yuri bait with a fantastic art style. its fine if you like cute girls doing cute things while being gay genre

Erased - for a mystery story the culprit is laughably obvious. the rest of it is pretty good though. oh lol other than the weird jokes about the protags taste in girls but it never followed through on anything so compared to other series im too tired to care

ANON OMFG u do not even know the floodgates u just unleashed w this ask (im assuming st is a given) so settle back grab some popcorn and get Ready for some Rambling 💃 in no particular order (bc they’re all so good and i can’t choose):

THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE!! omfg i could talk for hours and hours and hours abt this show (and i have) but EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IS SO !! the storyline is so well thought out, like from the very first episode everything is set up Perfectly. and i looove a good character-driven show, and the way this show is split up w episodes for each character and how everything comes together in the end,, oh my god. like EVERYTHING ABT IT and iconic episodes 6 and 7 right after one another BROKE ME i swear i would give anything to go back and watch it for the first time again. i love how it’s a subversion on a typical haunted house story and the reveal at the end literally rewired my brain in a way that NOTHING ELSE EVER HAS !! in my top 3 shows of all time probably bc the perfect mixture of horror and drama and mystery and emotional catharsis is unmatched, the storytelling and cinematography and that One Rly Good Jumpscare (iykyk) anyways . before i give any spoilers for ppl who haven’t watched it please do urself the biggest favor of ur life and GO WATCH IT RN

new girl is and always will be my #1 comfort show. like there’s nothing even more i have to say, but i can’t recall a single bad episode in this entire show. i have it on in the background for EVERYTHING like doing dishes, cleaning my room, cooking, getting ready. it’s so fucking funny and honestly so so so iconic, zooey deschanel was BORN to play this role. like it’s cast so perfectly, the humor is spot on and has the best timing, the characters r so chefs kiss and AHHH idk idk what else to say it’s just so unmatched in this category for me i just (YELLS)

ATTACK ON TITAN !! OMG this is definitely also in my top 3 shows! i remember watching the first season back in 2015 when it came out and i think it got continued (the show not the manga) a couple years ago so i got back into it, but i didn’t finish the whole thing until last winter and WOW. let me just tell u i think this is one of the most incredible shows of all time, EVER. the way that the entire entire entire story was planned out from the very first episode (also i haven’t read the manga so just know i’m talking abt things in terms of the show!) is so astounding bc it took so many years and has like 4 seasons so just knowing the creator was that thorough from the beginning is SOOOO !!! like i rewatched it over the summer and there’s stuff in the FIRST EPISODE that correlates to stuff in the last season, which was made like a full 7 years later?? and it’s just so cool watching the storyline of the show come together, different characters and their roles changing (jean solos everyone fr), some of the best redemption arcs/if not The best vs. the best villain arc i’ve Ever seen, how there’s so many plot twists but none are tacky! and the worldbuilding is INSANE!! like ik this is probably the most basic of animes to be into bc i haven’t rly gotten into many others but it’s popular for good reason and deserves every bit of its hype fr . like there’s this 2/3 episode arc in season 3 that is just . like actually unparalleled by any other show for me (except for maybe ep6/7 of hill house hehe) ANYWAYS if u haven’t watched it . do it now NOWWWWWWWWWW NOW!!

Episode 24 of the ‘97 anime. The moment where Griffith sees Guts and makes the decision to sacrifice is like…maybe my favorite moment in the series? I could write an essay on it.

Also Wounds from the manga means a lot 2 me.

Favorite romantic ship:

Casguts in the “they invented love and it’s one of the best developed relationships I’ve seen I just want these two traumatized people to find comfort and strength in each other let them be happy please god” and griffguts in the “this is so horrific and toxic and complex and there’s so much present classical homoerotic subtext here I need to dissect it in a lab and write a 20 page paper with citations about it” way.

Lol there are no important men. Kyubey gets called “he” in most translations but kyubey is not a boy. Begone.

Sayaka i love her more than anything. She is the first fictional character I ever related to which should have let me know I needed mega therapy and also to transition but that took me a while. She is so tragic and her arc devastates me every time.

thanks for responding with so much thought i really appreciate it! it was funny how you mentioned “virtual world” because these songs (titled ‘Girl’ when they were initially released as a single instead of two separate tracks) are actually a semi-related continuation to another one of Daoko’s songs and easily her most popular / recognizable “ME!ME!ME!” and in that song the main character is refusing to face life and instead finds unfortunate solace in virtual reality and the Girl is fictional but enchanting him to give up on life and be immersed in her fantasy so saying “virtual world” reminded me of that! And honestly the concept itself, though much more. Mature for lack of a better word (since it’s about lust and desires and persona isn’t usually) really reminds me of the tv world and like. What if Yu gave in to Izanami’s ploy and ideals? It’s interesting to think about to say the least!

For the Girl video it’s not really necessary viewing but it’s very pretty imagery and the way they move between Yume Miteta and Samishii is very cool to hear and see

Also I’d LOVE some context behind your au esp in how other characters show up since in other unrelated arts you def seem interested in them but they haven’t made an appearance thus far, I’m very into the silly little sand box you’ve constructed and play with these characters like their little dolls so I can’t wait to see more heheh I also just really enjoy you giving izanami a much fuller personality and sense of identity. The first time I went through the story I felt a little underwhelmed by them which was saddening bc they were one the big bad and two had so much potential that it felt very underutilized so basically thanks for being another person who takes minor side characters I love and makes them your own character XD (also very into your marganami they kith and flirt)

Bringing up “virtual world” in the first place is due to the fact, well, Persona deities thus far are trying to create realities they deem fit for the humans that gave birth to their existence in the first place. Izanami and Maruki being awfully similar in ideals and execution; merging the world of the human unconscious with the real world and having complete power over the “new” world. Hand crafting realities for individuals to live in their own defined “blissful reality.” Just in this case, one’s an entity born from collective human will and the other is an idealistic human who’s influenced by a parasitic god, as per my interpretation. I’m a bit rusty on this comparison but there was a separate essay about it. somewhere.

It just !!! tickles my brain as to what iznmi meant when they’d merge realities together and let people turn into their Shadows and live a life in blissful fog unaware and the truth hidden from them entirely to continue “seeing what they want to see” and “believing what they want to believe.” The anime did touch a bit of this with its interpretation being uh, giving Narukami a Groundhog Day because he gave into the fog—his desire for not wanting to leave Inaba, to leave his newfound friends and family behind. It’s apparent I like to handpick concepts from every sort of media possible while keeping it as game-canon compliant as much as I can for the most part—I even have lore over how Mim’s plan would work AU-wise. And I like to analyze each media separately. It’s fun to see how manga canon works differently from anime canon etc etc that’s for another day !!!

Anyway trying to actually answer some questions for once thank you thank you bowing bowing. I go to my sandbox where there’s a pit in the middle and five—six or seven figurines inside. I walk past them and go to the edges of the box and dust away some sand to reveal several other figurines that also have good significance in said sandbox.

I hold up the main cast. I also hold up the highschool social links. Mitsuo is there also. There are also the adult social links. Now there are homemade and handprinted figurines. And there are the spinoff series figurines except Sho and the uniformed Teddie are nearer to the pit somehow. I look at my stage play DVDs and begin to short circuit.

Y’know being in this pit (hyperfixating on a gas station attendant) is me embodying this post almost exactly

I’m a sucker for nitpicking media and I believe I have The firmest grasp on canon Izanami, attendant, god and all. Although considering the character development I put them through this godforsaken AU they’ve grown and changed and everything you can imagine. I came to this gas station and pointed and proclaimed “I can fix them” and I made them worse in a sexy lore-filled well written canon divergence kind of way. Sometimes they’re separate characters in my head. Sometimes they’re one. Sometimes I don’t care and they crawl in the walls of my brain. So yeah even though I’m obsessed with myself and in this AU I’d still love to discuss canon and such.

Anyway here’s two stage play skits that I base almost my entire foundation of iznmi’s attendant facade (1/2 reading the translation notes would be appreciated). Also desperately trying to include several game crumbs such as their 47 lines of dialogue and 15 minutes of voiced lines all organized in a spreadsheet with its designated playlists.

I go back to the sandbox and hold up a few figurines. Before getting distracted and showing you a handheld console with an exposed interior with several dangling wires haphazardly connected to it hanging above the sandbox.

There are. several POVs to this AU I like to think in. But whenever it comes to thinking of Souji (bancho I use for my au. based off of the manga, as Narukami from the anime and subsequent canon is different) having interactions, I think of whole game scenarios as if the Gas Station Attendant Social Link was completely implemented—hell, I wrote up flowcharts and imagined Persona 4 Golden: Extra to no end. It was fun. I don’t know where it went.

After imagining game scenarios, I go “adapt” these into my AU, as uh, Adachi’s actually more prominent in all this (derogatory). bancho and marie izanagi and izanami Whatever WHATEVER whatever crossing arms averting eyes gritting teeth fuming about to explode

I throw these well played with figurines aggressively back into the pit and pick up and dust off the other ones on the surface I dropped for the 2039427th time. Screaming now. It’s the main cast but they have silly smiles and yellow eyes and silly costumes. Where did the actual main cast go

This is like. getting way longer than I thought it’d be do these analogies even make sense (me? Not realizing how talkative I am about the. hell in my brain.?) Anyway for the sake of the MTS subplot and developing Mim’s character outside their facade, I utilize the Shadow selves to go interact with them and see how they influence a self-proclaimed inhuman individual. Then first timeskip to where things have settled and gods live amongst men and Marie’s busy being close friends with the same children Mim took care of to some extent while they themself observe how much they’ve changed and admire the beauty of change and growth. But yeah Shadow selves are sillies and have a lot to say I wish I could finish the individual manga I have of them or just. talk about them more.

Picking up figurines. Did you know I think of 2 high school best friend groups on a regular basis. Anyway all of Souji's HS social link are friends <3 plus Hanako and Mitsuo because I said so. Morooka died from some other. reason. While Mitsuo just took the chance to frame himself. But he’s just some messed up kid chronically online who needs friends. And the fact he lives by the central shopping district and is in contact with much more Yasogami High kids than his own school is. well he’s been adopted into a friend group.

Unlike the anime, Souji does his part-time jobs throughout the year-ish. So it’s not too sudden like uh. two 20 minute episodes about NK’s summer time hell. Unfortunately I haven’t thought too hard about his older social links.

What else what else. Did you know I make the fox and the shrine ghost lady the. same person. She and Izy (Izanami-no-Mikoto before Mim and Marie split in Golden canon) were friends <3 Marie doesn’t remember jack shit and Mim doesn’t want to do anything with their past before they split, which includes an old friend. Nimono lady is also an old friend.

Did you know that I hc Sho with naturally black hair (his eyebrows) and he bleached his hair after cutting it up just so he could color it red by dunking his head into kool-aid (that joke went too far it’s real now) (Minazuki did everything mostly actually). He manages to observe the IT more closely by dressing up as a Yaso student with the uniform he stole. He doesn’t have a year emblem unfortunately but his whole graphic tee, flashy shoes and dust mask, unevenly bleached hair already has everyone thinking he’s a delinquent.

I think I’ve only mentioned this once or twice but yeah, Izy took Sho and Minazuki under her care which should explain the motives I have for him in the AU’s Arena Ultimax plot.

I don’t change much of the main cast since they don’t really impact much AU-wise, besides altering a few bits here and there in accordance to personal headcanons. The only ones important in the IT I suppose is Teddie, who I’ve technically made Mim’s kid at this point. I do have a bunch of stray thoughts for the IT if you’re wondering even if I don’t ever. talk about them. whoops. I guess I have more thoughts of them in the AU in the timeskip when things settle and they get to finally interact with Mim.

mgnmi is the silliest crackship I’ve ever thought of and they’re a silly concept in their own pocket of bullshit. Though in my AU canon, I don’t think Mim would accept any of her advances. Though they are still close with her as they consider her a “fascinating individual (velvet room attendant).”

thinking abt the journey and a half my DC hyperfixation has been.

I was a DCAU only girlie for so long. (BTAS, Batman Beyond, Teen Titans, YJtv, GLtv). I enjoyed the DCEU too, but i was WAY too wrapped up in MCU brain-rot to dive too deeply into those. But that was it. Zero interest in comics themselves as a lil squirt.

Eventually I stopped caring abt the DCEU entirely. (around WW’84, tho it had nothing to do with that movie, i just never saw it — and didnt see any of the movies that came after). And got WAY into Marvel™. And i kinda just rode that wave.

When Marvel started branching out into shows i was HYPED — esp since they started that shit off with WandVision. I’d always loved Wanda, and the fact that they brought Billy and Tommy in was all i needed to push me into reading comics

i tore through the young avengers (UGH i miss them <;/3), and other titles associated with them, and was having a blast. At some point around the season finale of Loki (good show, this was just also how the cookie crumbled) I just fell off Marvel in general. A lot of this probably had to do with school ramping up around this time — but i stopped reading comics & watching their shows and movies almost entirely.

Around this time tho, bc i Missed reading comics — i started reading webcomics. And as much as i enjoyed reading Marvel comics for that short period of time, webcomics were what made me fall in love with Comics™ as a medium.

6th semester ended, i was elbows deep in world building for my own webcomic project, and started watching anime while working on it. Again, anime was always one of those things i enjoyed (Digimon, Sailor Moon, and Pokémon were some of the most influential pieces of media in my entire childhood), but my love for it as an art form was really solidified during this time

[side note: can you Tell i was dealing with art school shit during all of this? couldn’t turn the critique brain off literally Ever, so anything i enjoyed got put under the art student lens]

But my interest in anime stayed entirely on the animated side of things for a Long Ass Time. It wasn’t until Jujutsu Kaisen that i got shoved headlong into manga. God that stupid fucking anime changed my life, ANYWAY.

I finished the anime (umm maybe like. 5 times), and then HAD to know what happened next. So i devoured the manga. Every spare moment i had was spent reading it, until i was Done. then i was like orz. what do u do now ??

The answer was do the exact same thing with Demon Slayer. which was ALSO a life changing experience. read 鬼滅の刃 pls pls pls

Now. When i finished KNY, i was also like *head in hands* how do i even keep on living?? But this was also while working on my thesis project, and still doing a lot of work on the side as far as my own comic was concerned. (like… 60k words worth of world building & drafting scripts + designing characters), so its not like i had all that much free time.

anyway — i finished up my 8th semester, and barely gave myself a chance to breathe before i threw myself into working on my comic practically full time.

I was working on a one shot to submit to a contest for Webtoon, and they were asking for a pretty substantial amount of content (60+ panel Action comic one shot. and I, as always, love to make things harder on myself, so i think in one of the later drafts it ended up having over 100 panels).

needless to say, i Did Not finish the oneshot in time (its still not done to this day T~T i’ll come back for you forge, dont worry). But, toward the end of that… 3 month span of feverishly working on this project, i found myself falling in love with DC all over again.

I mentioned YJtv before, but that show was Also something that changed my life as a 10 year old.

(its really funny to think about that show now & how it’s release date lines up with the beginning of the N52 continuity, and how both the show & that particular reboot are so strongly disliked by a vast majority of DC’s fanbase — but thats a post for another day)

I’ve rewatched the show at least once a year since my roommate let me start using their HBOMax login. I know seasons 1 and 2 like the back of my hand bc of how much i watched them growing up, and i like season three well enough. But the thing was that on this unsuspecting summer night, i was about to discover that there were New Episodes.

Dude i was hyped, i was losing my shit. I had resigned myself to the knowledge that this show was never coming back. I was okay with it too. But here it was, alive and kicking after what felt like forever.

Heres the thing tho. They killed off Kon.

okay not really, but at the Time boy boy was Dead, and i was devastated. Thats My Boy. He had been my favorite character from the jump, and i did not know how to process him being gone. So i took a break from the show, and turned to ao3 instead.

At this point i was Not an avid fic reader. I wasn’t an avid reader period – outside of manga – but i had read a few really good fics recommended to my by some of my JJK pals. So i looked at the Kon-El | Conner Kent character tag on ao3 and just scrolled until i found something interesting.

In this case: a Timkon fic (this one in particular).

I knew who Tim was before this (He shows up in YJtv. He's there in BTAS), but I had never thought about him and Kon as... anything really. In the versions of them i was familiar with, they don't interact all that much. They're from different generations of heroes, but i was like, hey, what the hell this sounds cute. And man oh man, it was all down hill from there.

I read more TimKon fic, and just fell in love with them. But i was also... confused. Like... why do these two guys have such a robust fanbase... wheres the link.

THAT is what pushed me to start reading Detective Comics Comics for the first time. I wanted to get to know these guys For Real, and the only way to do that was by digging into the source material.

This post is So long oh shit. I have thoughts about How I got to know the kiddos & how the comics i read (as well as the order i read them in) have influenced my understandings of these little guys. But i think thats a post for another day. I have other things to do than write out a post about my media consumption habits

okay bc the last post was a art post without naruto this is a naruto post without art ive been sitting on this topic for MONTHS so im just gonna share it, lets get ready to do a mild dive into The Yamato Pays For Lunch Scene!!!

this scene is funny and yamato being flattered and flustered is endearing, and kakashi is funny in this but a lot of the time this scene is used to characterize the bulk of kakashi and yamato's interactions in a way which kinda reduces yamato largely to just...kakashi's fool, Just A Moron Who Does What Kakashi Says Because He's Starstruck Stupid/ In Love/ A Sucker

and I'm not gonna lie, while that's a...possible...reading of the source material and all, it's not my favorite since it's. really entirely at the expense of Yamato's character, so I'm gonna try and provide a counter reading based on things I notice in the scene from the manga: warning. this is a very long post bc i am NOT good at being succinct

first i'd like to point this little bit out:

u can notice here that in that first panel in the top right, Kishimoto makes a point of including yamato in the shot in the background, not just eating his own noodles and minding his business but clearly paying attention to what Kakashi and Naruto are talking about, and Kakashi, in dialogue, pretty clearly states his intention to sweet talk Somebody. Additionally, In the anime if I remember correctly, Kakashi adds in something after the sweet talk line like "I promise, it'll be interesting," which clearly designates Naruto as Not being the one who is going to get the sweet-talk, since he will be Observing the Interesting Thing. This is important because Naruto, at first, thinks that Kakashi is referring to more Ninja Training, but this line makes it clear that he's Not talking about that. Anyway, put a pin in this whole thing.

then the funny little incident itself:

goofy and endearing. that's all i have to say. ANYWAY.

the most interesting part of this interaction is what happens afterward in my opinion; they go back to the training ground and kakashi gives naruto a little pep talk about how if Anyone can master this jutsu it is GOING to be naruto, because naruto has what it takes and will surpass the fourth hokage etc etc etc, which leads to this interaction,

this is really interesting to me because the "you really Are a sweet talker," first of all indicates that he heard and understood that kakashi intended to sweet-talk him, but it ALSO implies that there was doubt about kakashis ability to sweet talk at all by emphasizing the "are," which could lead to some interesting interpretations!

Scenario One: Yamato was Generally Aware of what Kakashi was doing, and actively and intentionally decided to play along.

This is the one I play with the most—I think Yamato is probably pretty good at reading Kakashi, and is aware that Kakashi is goading him into paying for the meal, especially since afterwards he turns Kakashi's words right back at him, essentially saying that he suspects the pep talk he gave Naruto is just as calculated (and possibly untrue) as the one Kakashi gave him at the ramen place, but a much better performance.

This also kind of accounts for the funny look he gives Kakashi right after Kakashi denies the accusation in the bottom right of the image above. The last time they worked together closely, Kakashi was trying to deaden himself emotionally, so seeing genuine and open expressions of pride and belief in other people's abilities probably represents a huge change from the Kakashi he knew, to the Kakashi he stands beside now. At once very much the same, and also a stranger, and I think that's a fun texture to play with in their relationship as they try to figure each other out again after a multi-year-gap of not interacting.

I like this reading the most for a couple reasons; I like that it shows a very cynical and suspicious side of Yamato's character, one which he has no reason to display around the kids. Making a crack at your teammate for being Very Fake to his wide eyed and genuine students is NOT a productive or useful behavior that you want to pass on, but a couple side comments to the Other dark and cynical dude who u went thru anbu with about how fake he is is surely fine TWO: Since it implies Kakashi was insincere and being performative, it also implies Yamato himself was doing the same in the ramen bar—essentially that Kakashi suggested a little game that would amuse their student, and Yamato didn't mind playing along—the only hitch in this reading is, why would either of them play this game? What Kakashi would get out of it is easy; a free meal and to show off a bit. What Yamato would get out of this is a little more opaque, however—

Obviously there's the reading that, being cynicism + misery poisoned repressed people, the only way they can express a feeling is thru at least 3 layers of insincere/sincere performance but. we'll get to that eventually. not what im interested in rn bc I'd personally lean more towards the idea that this is an opportunity for him to soften his image a little bit in general (Yamato is, after all, the disguise of a Just Some Guy Jōnin) but also, specifically in front of Naruto, to seem a little goofier and a little more fallible and affectionate, after all, Team Kakashi has only really seen him in Captain Mode, where he has said shit like "Kakashi might promise he'd never let you come to harm, but I can't, and I won't." and "Coddling is not compassion," etc etc, he's often got a very serious demeanor and this whole situation puts a funny little hitch in it. Why yes Captain Yamato is a Very serious man who is Very upfront about the possibility and in some ways the inevitability of death, but will let his dear friend goad him into paying the bill with a couple kind words.

and. also kind of a callback to him paying for the meal and inn, where team seven was like "wow this rocks! can you actually just replace kakashi??" but in a scenario where he's not just trying to put a tracker on sai—a performance to indicate there's truth within another performance, good god the complicated lives these ex-anbu lead.

Scenario Two: Yamato Does Not Generally Believe Kakashi Is So Honey-Tongued, But Has A Soft Spot For Him Anyway.

Pretty straight forward! The majority of the above analysis applies, but rather than Kakashi and Yamato seeing this as a game they are both playing, Kakashi and Yamato both know that Yamato's got a soft spot for some kind words from his senpai, even though he knows Kakashi is teasing him. In this reading the "Man, Kakashi. You really Are a sweet-talker," is still critical of Kakashi's ability to affect others, but with the admission that Yamato is a lost cause here, he's just self aware about it.

I think people who are going into readings of their relationship with a shipping angle generally prefer takes more along this line, because the idea of people having "exceptions" or "the only person i do this with" is generally considered romantic in a fashion.

This reading is fine and valid, as all readings of this scenario are, but it still plays into the kind of "I'm a fool, but just for you" trope which I worry kinda disrespects Yamato's character a bit! like, again, it's fine! just not the flavor of reading that i enjoy

That said, this all focuses mostly on Yamato's experience and point of view because he's my favorite and I love him, but there's also interesting stuff to be observed here about Kakashi—the whole chapter is called "Honey Tongued" or sweet-talking, so the two instances of Kakashi complimenting Yamato and Naruto are meant to be the focus, and meant to be compared!

Kakashi is very clear and very firm that the delivery and the sentiment behind the pep talk he gave Naruto was genuine.

Naruto does not enjoy nor does he have an easy time with Kakashi playing mind-games around him, and having taught Naruto at his greenest genin phase, Kakashi would know this. Hypothetically here if we wanna talk Kakashi character growth, for him this scene is more about settling into the role of teacher genuinely, how he's changed and adapted in the three years of missing his "adorable" students, and that he's willing to open up more and express more heartfelt and therefore more vulnerable feelings to the kids. That said, because of the chapter title and content, as well as because Yamato directly asks us to compare the scenarios, this point is in contrast with his complimenting Yamato, and there's two ways I can think of to read that:

1) Unlike the scene with Naruto, his complimenting was manipulative, either wholly or partially unmeant. I don't think many people would agree with this one! U can see based on their interactions in combat or other serious scenarios that Kakashi trusts and respects Yamato, and relies on his skill and intuition frequently, and even after years apart, they're very much still in sync with each other, which Kishimoto makes a point to show us (them saying words at the same time, communicating non-verbally or with a minimum of words).

2) The delivery was ironic, but much like the pep talk for Naruto, the sentiment was genuine. I typed up a whole thing about like, how repressed people who are scared of being vulnerable sarcastically express love for their friends, and how this situation could be considered in that vein, but essentially:

What I mean is; Kakashi is famous for his inability to open up. When he first meets the kids, he says he has no interests, no goals, and doesn't like to talk about himself. This whole scenario with the pep talk shows that he's making strides in being direct and complimentary (this feels like the wrong word. what i mean is that he's like...he's engaging with the people around him in a more genuine way, interacting with his students as people, letting them know that he sees how they've grown because he seems to better understand he can also have a positive impact on them, not just a neutral or negative impact) since then—but Yamato doesn't necessarily know that, and to Kakashi, Yamato could represent a kind of bridge between the person he was back in anbu, and the person he is now, delivering a cheesy description of their previous relationship to each other in a way that Yamato was meant to understand as fake or putting-him-on, while actually being more or less a direct and genuine acknowledgement of the importance of their previous friendship + working relationship...it's a way to ease the two very different versions of himself together.

My hot take on the Evangelion 3.0+1.0 movie

-40 mins of shinji crying, trying to get over the trauma seeing Kaworus head explode and splatter across the window is relatable.

- Mari confused the fuck out of me. Her existence didn't make much sense but ok. Too much boob shots, too much fan service.

- Asukas story was good. Liked that she's also a Type series like Rei. Too much fanserves. They put a shit ton of detail on her naked body. I hated it.

- the Angel concept of Asuka was cool though it was predictable.

- So little of Ritsuko and Misato. Little to no personality.

- Kaji probably controlled Mark 6 to cut off Liliths head to stop the impact. (theory / headcanon / could have been kaworu as well but damn)

- hated that everyone was blaming shinji even tho he saved everyone at the same time. Ungreatful people, trying to blame a kid for ALLL the mess is pretty messed up.

- Kaworu and Asukas soul piloting Eva 13 lmao (I assume at least that's the case)

- I was laughing so ugly about the animation fo 3d Rei. Didn't give me the creeps, I was just making fun of it.

- some scenes are quiet awkwardly cut.

-I HATED the 3d fight between Eva 13 and Eva 1. It felt unfinished and unpolished.

- I did like the trueman show style of backdrop in the fight, where Eva 01 slammed through the scene wall.

hi! im bored and in quarantine so i am gonna post my top 10 ships of allllllll time! so over the course of all the anime ive watched and the manga ive read, these are my 10 favs. this list changes sometimes, but all in all it relatively stays the same. okkkk lets go!

10. Tomoe and Nanami from Kamisama Kiss

shoujo is very hit or miss with me, but this one is a BIG hit. the relationship between tomoe and nanami is sooo well paced and really enjoyable to watch blossom. they bicker, they hug, they are real cuties. also im a sucker for fantasy and gods and things like that so this is nice hehe

9. Jacuzzi and Nice from Baccano

we love them. a lot. if u talk to anyone who has seen baccano they will tell u it is CRIMINALLY underrated which is very true. on top of that, jacuzzi and nice are an underrated couple. they have such a sweet backstory and their personalities work soooo well together!!!!! they are adorable. watch baccano.

8. Akihito and Mirai from Beyond the Boundary

omggggg! a beautiful couple from a BEAUTIFUL anime. they are sooooooooo sweet. they are both just adorable ok. the movie made me love them 18972938230 times more omfg. if u are a sucker for cuties being cute while also risking their lives pls watch this lmao.

7. Tsuyopon and Yukirin from Rainbow Days

omfg. they are one of those couples that is together from the very beginning and good lord is it incredible. the show/manga revolves around four “couples” and unfortunately, they are the one that is probably shown the least but when they do have moments i just wanna curl up and cry they’re so cute. towards the end of the manga they have.... an AMAZING moment it is so sweet i legitimately go back and read it like once a month. shy broody boy x sweet girl who is so in love with him are always the best pairings.

6.  Otani and Koizumi from Lovely Complex

ahhh lovely complex. SUCH a good show. short boy and tall girl who r both goofballs and argue! we love it. riza reminds me a lot of myself, so she will always have a special place in my heart. i really enjoy otani and riza’s relationship bc its realistic! they have their ups and downs but its still so enjoyable to see them develop. pleaseee watch this show ok u will not regret it.

5. Kabakura and Koyanagi from Wotakoi

kabakura and koyanagi are simply elite. its as simple as that. again, another couple that is together since the beginning (for a few years in fact) and i LOVE them. imma just say it.... they should be the main couple....... i love narumi and hirotaka tho! its just... i love these two a lottttt. their fights are so funny but they always make up in the end and they’re always there for each other ughhhh they love each other sm u can just tell. all of their moments are godly and i wanna see more of these two BADLY.

4. Ryuji and Taiga from Toradora

my<3 favorite<3 romance<3 anime<3. wow. these two go way back w me lmao. its like one of the first anime i watched and i just fell IN LOVE w them. i think these two are definitely more of a slowburn but theyre clearly soulmates from the very start. they got each other’s backs while also kickcing each other’s asses. they r made for each other and while this is, like i said, a slowburn, i think the pacing of their relationship is perfect and the payoff is so worth it. watch toradora ok.

3. Soul and Maka from Soul Eater

sigh. soul and maka. talk about ACTUAL soulmates. they are just actually perfect for each other and...... the fact that there is no sequel to soul eater is simply CRIMINAL. i need more of these two sososo bad and ill never get it but ya know what thats ok<3 doesnt change the fact that their compatibility is unmatched and they are so much fun to watch. they kick ass and manage to still be adorable and soft for each other<3 stan soma.

2. Edward and Winry from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

oh and here we have my fav anime! of all time! yeah fmab is certainly not a romance by any means, but it still managed to portray edward and winry’s relationship perfectly. ofc i would have loved to see more of them BUT i get it, fmab isnt about romance. but when we do get moments w these two, they are just perfect. alllllll their moments and dialogue is always so MEANINGFUL even if its just when theyre bickering like a married couple! u just cant help but love these two and if you say they aren’t perfect for each other then u are just a big fat liar.

given (my most favouritist comfort anime!! it's boys love, about boys in a band and also has an amazing soundtrack imo but that may be bc im biased towards the anime HAHAHA i can talk so much about given + the songs + the significance of the music to the anime and the anime to me but now is not the time)

2. ph god. i cant choose one. i have a painting my friend painted for me of a scene from kimi no na wa + she made me a small book with "excerpts of stories i'll never write" pieces in them and a bunch of birthday msgs from my friends. in terms of sentiment those top the list. other than that... i really do love my dino earrings. no particular reason, they just make me happy. OH AND ALSO definitely not one thing but the books i own, because reading is not only one of my fav things but it's also helped me a lot and a lot of the stories + characters are so comforting so.

Spy x Family - getting this out of the way bc literally everyone is talking about it. comedy series with a touch of action and occasional drama. fake family turned found family, super cute, anime & manga are both worth checking out

Mushishi - because i think everyone should read mushishi and its anime is super highly reviewed so i trust it. fantasy series. man goes around helping people with monster/spirit/curse related problems and is 100% the thing for people who like going on a journey with a character. it has stunning artwork and i hold it very dear to my heart as it was one of the first manga i read

Jujutsu Kaisen - i think that this is the current best action shonen series ongoing right now (One Piece excluded because it is One Piece and will always be ongoing and always win these things) supernatural horror energy! and great female characters oh my god they are so good I love you Maki. It is just super good and with the movie that just came out easy to check out without investing a lot of time. It has a lot of my current favorite characters in it

Recs for manga

Chainsaw Man - because it is my favorite <3 do not read if you are sensitive to gore. action series with amazing characters. obvious metaphors for how much capitalism sucks. makes you laugh makes you cry, it is very good

Goodbye, Eri - a boy obsessed with making movies because his dying mother asked him to film her last moments, i think this one is better if you go in without knowing a lot since its only 100 pages

The Girl From the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún - a girl and a monster together in a town abandoned from a disease, the very disease that turned the man into a monster if we trust what we are told. a whimsical and deeply sad fantasy/supernatural story with lots of twists but it always keeps that very important father and daughter dynamic the two leads have and I love them for it. Beautiful artwork as well

Blue Flag - hey enough of this action fantasy stuff what about some high school romance! a classic love triangle that is not at all what you think it is, and pulls away from the love triangle to instead focus on what it means to be friends, to go through so many ups and downs but still have so much trust in each other. the author focused on making sure the characters communicate and express things honestly and it is SO good okay. listen this is some of the best high school writing I've ever read

Recs for anime

Fruits Basket (2019) - I think everyone should know Fruits Basket honestly it is a classic for a reason. the redo is beautiful and made me cry I love these characters so much. Tohru is a fantastic protagonist and her journey of self love and accepting that other people love and care for her is amazing. If you're not already familiar with it I'm just gonna throw a big abuse content warning up here. Like every kind of abuse? Is here? Lol? Anyways this is my ideal shoujo romance series brought to life in the way i look back on is nostalgically

Mob Psycho 100 - this series has the best action animation ... ever? with the heart to back it up. it is a treat to the eyes and it is incredibly funny and wild and also will consistently surprise you with how much you care about these characters. mob is baby of the year every year we will all love and appreciate him.

Sk8 the Infinity - is this like? perfect? a must watch? life changing? no. it is simply very gay and the animation is killing it. i want to call it just gay bait but like well. it is simply so very gay? and there are canonically confirmed romantic gay feelings between the two main guys. LOOK if you like gay as fuck camp as hell sports anime go check it out its a nice fun watch. content warning for adam though hes a creep TM like call 911 this man is a predator put him in jail.

Odd Taxi - I have saved the best for last dear friend. A girl has gone missing, it is on the radio station it is on the news when you turn on the TV, but where did she go? And what does a grouchy taxi driver have to do with that, if anything at all. Well what I can say without spoiling too much is that he gets some very interesting riders and you quickly start to put every new piece of info up on a board with red string connecting them but things still dont line up and just. Listen this is an amazingly constructed mystery with great characters and I promise you despite the talking animals it is very much a mature story with clever writing. Please watch Odd Taxi
