I hate how fandom has become "if you haven't created anything in this very specific time frame after the release of the show/movie, everyone will have moved on"
And call me old fashioned, but that's just not me. I sometimes take ages to create and publish. And I will love a show or movie for such a long time (years, babes, years) that I just can't relate to the fast consumerism that's going on.
Because, let's be real, it can get really lonely in a fandom if most have simply moved on to the next shiny thing. Is what's created less worth, just because it was created outside the hype? Why is it such a taboo for this new fandom generation to love an old or "late" fic or art?
It's so tiring and I'm too old for the 30-seconds-hype-tiktok-shit. Just tired. So, so tired.

right it’s funny bc i always see 20 yr olds getting age shamed by the younger generation on tiktok and getting called ancient and will defend themselves by being like “i’m still so young” but then will go and age shame a 30 yr old
i think it's just a bit of projection tbh, 20 is such a weird and confusing age and seeing younger people make fun of you for it can compound that insecurity so they make fun of ppl who are 30+ for their age so they can think "well at least i'm not THAT old." obviously that's just me speaking generally and sometimes people just take the piss out of anyone older them for laughs, sometimes it's truly not any deeper than that, but that slight projection/discomfort is a common theme i notice

Why do you think Kyman gets so much hate? I can understand some things about what people don’t like about it but some of the things they say, the harassment is so out of pocket. Especially on Tik Tok! It is like a battle ground out there and they all will shoot you down immediately if you SAY anything. I just wanna love Kyman without it seeming like a punishment 😭😭
Dude I totally feel you. It's so much easier to live and let live so I don't understand how these ppl have the energy to be so aggressively hurtful all the time. This has been said before ad nauseum but for god's sake, it's JUST a fucking tv show. I'm too old for this shit.
Tumblr media
(longer explanation under the cut! like... extremely long lol I'm so sorry my thoughts about this have been building up for a while 😅)
I think the extremely aggressive kyman hate is a symptom of growing poor media literacy and the larger "purity culture" trend that's been present online for a while now. It's very reminiscent of American Evangelicalism or Puritanism, where members of the church have to follow a very specific set of rules for behaving and thinking and if you deviate from those rules in the slightest, you're shot down immediately by the community and shamed for being sinful and blasphemous, all to keep you on the "righteous path" and avoid burning in hell for eternity. This is why so many puritanical christians in the US hate themselves for doing what most of the world sees as normal behavior, and simultaneously force that self-hating worldview onto others to "save" them. (For example see this video by FD Signifier on youtube explaining how hardcore religious ppl/conservatives are doomed to be bad in bed because they see sex as "evil" when in reality it's a normal part of human behavior 😬 It's long but very good).
Though, it's important to note that ppl who think this way may not even be christian themselves, but the behavior is so pervasive in american culture that you absorb it even if you're not a puritanical christian. (for example, to quote Ian Danskin, athiests may think "I don't believe in god, but the god I don't believe in is Jehovah). Tons of the first generation of white USAmericans were exiled British puritans who were kicked out of their home country for essentially being self-righteous assholes and trying to force their shit worldview on everyone else lmao. And I think because so many online spaces are so USAmerican-centric, people from all over the world have started adopting that purity culture as well.
Now, South Park is extremely popular (duh). It's been around for decades so it has a ton of fans both old and new. Unfortunately a lot of new fans, especially young people, follow the show for very different reasons than the average normie/not-terminally-online viewer does. They take the characters out of their original context, use them like dolls to make their own stories and fan content, and ignore all the other blatantly controversial shit that's been going on in the show since day 1 (which is why so many exclusively make blasé creek fanworks imo). They want to keep their thoughts "pure" and only engage with content that's approved by the puritanical online community
It's extremely fitting but also sad that Cartman is the scapegoat for everything wrong with South Park, both in the show and in the real world. Either ppl don't want to acknowledge he exists, or ppl latch onto him and project all of that puritanical hatred toward him or anyone that likes his character. Hell, even I'M guilty of this kind of thinking before I watched the show and understood Cartman's character better.
Kyman in particular is a target BECAUSE it involves Cartman, but also because people boil it down to shipping a nazi with a jew which, at the surface level, seems horrible! But if you've ever actually WATCHED the goddamn show, you know that is an extremely reductive and inaccurate interpretation of their characters. It's horribly poor media literacy. These ppl CANNOT seem to comprehend that you can enjoy watching a character who's a "bad person" without condoning their actions, and that enjoying the shipping dynamic of such characters DOES NOT make you a bad person by proxy.
A huge role of fiction as media is to explore ideas that may be harmful in the real world in a safe way because... *gasp* it's imaginary!! It makes you think and experience emotions you may not have the opportunity for otherwise! However, in the eyes of puritans, the fact you're even thinking about something like that makes you a sinner. It's a thought crime, which is why they consider us mentally "sick" for shipping kyman. So, they send hate at the drop of a hat and publicly vilify kyman shippers to reinforce that behavior with each other, all to say "Hey look at me!!! I'm a Good Person! see how much of a Good Person I am??? I'm gonna go to HEAVEN, and YOU'RE going to HELL". Like I said before, it's not that they necessarily believe in heaven or hell, but that's the general root of the behavior. It's performative puritan dog-piling. Also, because they haven't even fucking watched the whole show, they conveniently ignore all the other horrible shit the show portrays because random kyman shippers online are easy targets while Matt & Trey are gajillionaires who are essentially un-cancellable for things they do on the show at this point because, to quote Trey: For anyone to go up and go "Did you see this thing on South Park? That was really offensive" someone's gonna be like "Dude shut up 😒 that's just South Park".
Geez man this got super fucking long lmao. But my advice is to please take care of yourself because, and this super cliché to say, but FUCK the haters dude 🖕🖕🖕 You're engaging with media that brings you joy and exploring interesting ideas with a community of awesome artists/writers/meta-analysts and more. This is supposed to be FUN!! Anyone who tries to take that away from you or shame you into stopping is a fucking immature, holier-than-thou asshole who needs to get a fucking life. The block button is your friend, so use it early and often. You have the power to curate your own online space, and you shouldn't subject yourself to dealing with these dickheads (this is a big reason why I don't have a tiktok lol)
Good luck dude, and keep on shipping kyman 😎🤘❤️💚

Rant about Puritan fandom culture!
Well I typed it on twitter but then I had more to say so tumblr it is!
Under read more
WARNING: Long as fuck
Here's some pics
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know I basically said the author of Heartstopper "brought it on themselves" but yea they kinda did.
You can disagree with BL/Yaoi you can hate the shipping discourse or shipping in fandom in general but you cant frame it in a "i hate [that] bc it's sinful/fetishistic and I'M ABOVE THAT BC I'M WHOLESOME AND BETTER THAN THOSE DISGUSTING SHIPPERS"
bc that's gonna bite you in the ass...as it is doing now. The fucking image of their character's google history is so tame and normal, esp in LGBTQ+ spaces! Yet they are being called a pedo? Crazy. In the end, you only hurt yourself!
I never bothered with HS bc i just wasnt interested in it but thats just my preference. It's sad to see ppl, esp young ppl, turn on a series of LGBTQ+ representation just bc of the author's past (or current? idk) stance on the BL/Yaoi or MLM or whatever genre just bc their stance wavered a bit in a simple comic image. Something that is so fucking normal also! but they will grow up and realized how limiting it is to restrict themselves just to appear pure within a group.
Yet the artists/writers/creators are traumatized by the witchhunt. I know I said the author brought it on themselves for supporting anti but damn I don't want them being accused of being a pedo! Or ANYTHING! NO ONE DESERVES THAT. I dont know anything about the author other than surface knowledge but at the end of the day, all this online shit, doesnt matter. It doesnt! Me saying that is ironic bc im typing this post up right now!
but it's something we care about! I care about fandom spaces, I care that creators are getting attack for something as mild as this even if they invited these ppl into their circle. We're human and we change our views a million times a fucking day. I could agree with one thing and disagree with it another. That's why anti discourse pisses me the hell off! It's just a bunch of bullies looking to make themselves feel better by shaming others! I don't respect that type of behavior. And I hate that they just run around saying shit like "kys" over a two characters fucking?!? It amazes me beyond words.
Fandom has never been without its discourse. But the puritan bullshit is not even fandom discourse, it's just straight up bullying and harassment. It doesnt take much to tailor your fandom spaces to your preferences, i should know ive been in fandom spaces since I was fucking 13 years old. I didn't explore nsfw/porn/anything until I wanted to when I was 18. That is MY personal experience. I never put that on anyone else BUT MYSELF. If I saw nsfw and didnt want to see it I blocked the person. Not make a fucking witch hunt out of it. You are in charge of keeping YOURSELF in check not some person who shared nsfw art/fanfic. How fucking hard is it to turn the "don't show me nsfw" toggle on??? Bc it's not about that. Y'all just wanna be mad and be above someone so why not ppl minding their own business.
And guess what? There ARE ppl who are bad and support nsfw art/writing. They fucking suck. They are outliers and deserve to be called out when they get exposed. But many times, ppl always go "see i told you all the ppl in THAT fandom were pedos/freaks/etc" hmmm sounds like when conservatives go "see...that queer person turned out to be bad, SO all queer ppl are bad" DO YOU GET IT?? It never works out with that line of thinking. You are harming innocent ppl minding their own business. You are harming yourselves when you grow the fuck up and realize that "OH actually...I am curious about sex" and have ppl who you thought were your friends eat your face. PLS wake the fuck up.
If you're an anti:
I hope you recover from that
go fuck yourself
if you're offended by me saying "go fuck yourself", pls take that as a sign to log off the internet and go touch grass. As someone who has done that many of times, it's very refreshing.

tagged by @youngestdaughtersyndrome to talk about five things i'm obsessed with recently
barbie and the feminist agenda ever since i saw the movie saturday it has baffled me that so many people are holding it to impossible standards. many ppl online are criticizing it for being surface level and a two hour long "toy commercial" when the film is literally being produced by fucking mattel, a multi million dollar corporation. one of the prominent messages communicated in the film is that, in today's day and age, women are expected to be perfect at everything they do all of the time and i think audiences expected the same of this movie. i think the people that went into this movie expecting something progressive and queer and groundbreaking had the wrong expectations. greta gerwig worked as hard as she could to make a movie that had a strong feminist message while also being accessible to mass audiences. yes, the whole feminist monologue is a little bit cheesy but you have to remember that a) children are going to see this movie and i believe that the messages communicated in that monologue are very easy concepts for young girls (and boys) to grasp. b) she had to work through a LOT of red tape. even the scene where barbie tells an old woman that she was beautiful (a non-revolutionary message) was threatened to be cut for run time purposes. with the material she had to work with, i believe that greta made a movie that is funny and forward thinking and something that will stick with audiences for a long time. no, it's not anything that's advanced, but it's still special and has brought joy to so many women. the sheer experience of barbie, being surrounded by women of all ages dressed in pink and unafraid to be feminine and find joy in what society shames us for, is so beautiful and special and i loved every second.
antique photos at the moment, i'd confidently say that my antique photo collection in the 30s. antique photos are probably my favorite thing to buy (besides clothing) when i go antique shopping. i love finding photos of families from the 1900s showing off their family homestead, a couple in the 1950s sharing an intimate christmas morning, a small boy dressed up as a cowboy. these memories might not belong to these people anymore - so now they belong to me. i just love finding these moments captured in time, moments that strengthen the fabric of humanity.
american individualism in the united states today there is no sense of community. outside of organized religion, it's hard to find a way to feel connected with other people. the heightened awareness of individual freedoms and rights that has been a byproduct of online spaces that urge users to bran themselves, there is nowhere for the youth of today to gather and find people that are like them. i believe that bc of this that is why labels for sexuality, gender, and even what mental illnesses we have, have developed online. there are no malls or internet cafes, or parks for our generation to be together in and it's making the average american individual feel as if they are entitled to certain treatment due to having certain labels attached to them. it's all so fascinating how aesthetics and labels and what you look at online shapes our worldview. and yes, capitalism is involved somehow.
caledon hockley if you've been following me any amount of time you know that i've already written many thinkpieces on the antagonist of the 1997 film, titanic. notice how i didn't say villain. that said, i think people tend to forget what cal is like when we first meet him. yes, he's arrogant and pompous ("god himself could not sink this ship") but he doesn't do anything to outwardly control or harm rose. i'm pretty sure he was aware of the fact that she's miserable - sans suicidal. when he brings her the necklace he knows that something is wrong. he really tries in the only way he knows how to get close to her and yet she continues to push him away. i doubt that this is because she's unattracted to him but, rather, more the realization of what her life is going to become once they're married; being a wife and mother to his children, never experiencing any of her dreams. i want to theorize that when they met up until the engagement they were "happy" or at least what could be close enough and what we see in the movie is rose falling out of that happiness and yearning to find it in something or someone else (i.e. jack). i guess what i'm trying to say is that cal doesn't begin to shed light on his more undesirable traits (selfishness and possessiveness) until he can see rose pulling away from him and towards jack. the cal at the beginning of the movie, while he can be annoying and shallow, he's not necessarily a bad person. i think somewhere inside of him he wants to be good. but i mean there's also the whole sexual tension between him and jack and cal's hidden desire to live a life that's so free and easy and emotionally healthy. we also have to remember that he has his own suicidal tendencies - but we don't have time for all of that.
sylvia plath i'm just so so so interested in her personal life and her writings. im slowly making my way through her journals (unabridged bc fuck you ted hughes) and we are both libra moons and have prominent scorpio placements !!! i feel like i identify with her work very deeply and im excited to start reading a biography i got abt her the other day at the used bookstore !! she was such a genius and really set such a precedent for poetry today and just female artists in general she's like the patron saint of girls on antipsychotics and i love her for that

Question if you’re fine answering!
What’s advice you would give young people wanting to open an art store for the first time? If that makes sense?
this is a very general question and there is SO much to cover so i'll just put a buncha different points:
research research research all your store platform options (etsy, shopify, bigcartel, kofi, etc.) before choosing one and, when you find one that will work for you, look into how established artists structure their stores if you need help on building your own. you'll want products to have a decent picture and a description that lists its size and shipment options. not required but def recommended, i'd see about adding a faq page too that mentions shipping times, if you'll replace damaged artwork, etc.
prioritize having pictures of the physical product over the digital file (if applicable) customers want to see what they're getting!
keep track of all your finances (easiest way is to just use a google spreadsheet) track your revenue, fees, production costs, shipping costs, supplies, everything you spent money on for your store. i can give a tutorial on how to set up a spreadsheet if you need!
DO NOT SKIMP on protective measures for your art. buy chipboard, buy plastic sleeves/baggies, buy rigid envelopes, buy extras of your products! have lots of scotch tape! chipboard i think is the most important one that i hear some artists don't use. PLEASE USE IT HSDFSDFS it's a sturdy but flexible and thin piece of cardboard! this will make sure your artwork won't be as easily bent or creased during shipment. you can find these at crafts stores or online!
research post offices in your area. (if US) look into cost of postage, travel times to the post office, if you have a post office with a 24/7 kiosk available, and decide if you are willing to ship international (no shame in choosing not to!) — for this and the last bullet, i have a lot more about how to ship your art if you need it
optional but strongly recommended: handwrite your thank you notes! nothing makes people feel better than to see a personal touch in their order saying it was packaged with care by the artist themselves. you don't need good handwriting to write a simple ty 💕
be annoying about your store. promote it like fucking crazy (on your own blog, please don't self-promo on other ppl's blogs hsdfsdfs) and make it fun!
i hope that helps :') feel free to ask for clarification or about other things and i'll try my best to provide an answer!
and last thing, i'm not sure what you define as "young", but keep in mind that most platforms and paypal require you to be 18 or older to use their services!

hi, i just wanted to say that it actually makes me happy to see "old people/women" (as some anons put it) still here and still keeping up with their passions and hobbies cos it'd be a shame to grow up and give everything up just cos u feel too old for something. i believe that if you're passionate about something and that something makes you happy, then in no way should u give up on that. and seeing so many ppl that still support their fav artists, talk about them, have tumblr accs, read ffs, still pursue their hobbies...tbh that gives me so much happiness cos as an 18yo i can say that growing up (or aging for that matter) feels scary yeah, but knowing that in 20 years from now i'll still be me, i'll still be reading comfort stories, still be talking about harry and louis and one direction, still be listening to their music, still be writing...that is reassuring and not at all would ever make me feel ashamed cos if that's what makes me happy, then why should i be ashamed of that? why should other ppl's opinion make me feel it's wrong?
(also talking from the perspective of a person who when was younger gave up on listening to one direction cos some ppl close to me made me feel ashamed of that, saying i was obsessive or whatever other shit and now i'm sorry for my younger self, cos one direction has always made me happy and i'm sorry that for a couple of years i stopped listening to them just cos of what others told me)
(i'm sorry if this sounds confusing or dumb lol, i just think that some ppl shouldnt shame other just cos they're afraid of themselves if that makes any sense at all)
It absolutely doesn’t sound confusing or dumb. I really appreciate everything you said. Older fans have often been made to feel very unwelcome in this fandom (and older people outside of fandom spaces are often pushed to the side as having no value in general), so it’s nice to see someone young realize the benefit of having people of all ages around.
You’re so right, growing up can be really scary for a lot of reasons. And seeing people do it in a way that actually makes you feel excited about what’s to come, is a great thing. ❤️

hearing people talking about cooking is always such an interesting topic and i'm gonna take a min to ramble about it. i learned how to cook (eggs and pasta mostly) as a kid from my mom because she learned to cook at a young age as well and she would also be gone on work trips pretty often. later on in life i worked in restaurant kitchens as a kitchen manager and a line cook. i've even had the displeasure of working alongside new hire line cooks that don't fucking know how to cook but figure that they can still do the job (they could not)
some things just become intuitive so it's hard for me to remember exactly what i needed to focus on learning and what did just come naturally from the start, but a lot of it relates to just general science/chemistry knowledge. denser items will take longer to cook than less dense things (potatoes take forfuckingever but sliced button mushrooms take like a minute or two), high heat makes things cook way faster so liquids will boil off sooner, dense items will sear/burn quicker, and thin/small things will just burn. some professional cooks don't even know this based on the amount of times i've had to talk coworkers out of turning the fryer temp higher because things were taking a long time to cook (this is a great way to get a nice crispy skin on some shit that's still frozen in the middle)
there's a lot of learning how to read recipes. abbreviations (sometimes tablespoon is T or tb or TBSP or Tbs), how to adjust amounts if you need more or less of something, looking up substitutions for things (if you don't have milk but need to make a cream sauce, using applesauce instead of oil or butter or eggs in some baking recipes, etc). its definitely a skill to know how to read some recipes, and coming in with your own knowledge is great, but it's another instance of "you need to learn the rules to know how to break them." this is how you get the screenshots of ppl substituting kale in their banana cookie recipes and then wondering why they suck
thinking of foods in terms of nutritional value can also be helpful. if you have tortilla chips and salsa youre technically getting some vegetables in you. frozen and dried fruits and veggies are still fruits and veggies. rice and beans is grains and protein. miso soup with tofu and spinach is lots of protein and iron. romaine salad with balsamic vin, olive oil, feta, and tomatoes is some vitamins and fats and calcium but without grains and fiber it wont give you too much energy so have some bread or something with it. moving away from processed food will make you feel better. apple slice and peanut butter is my new depression meal bc it makes me feel more alive than shredded cheese from the bag and you can feel like a roman emperor a bit.
if you're just starting out learning how to cook: try to keep it simple with starch + veggie + protein (veggie pasta is a staple classic, roast some stuff and toss it with pasta and garlic and olive oil), find something with just a handful of ingredients that you actually want to eat. the act of cooking can be fun but not everyone thinks its fun, so at least make sure you'll want to eat the final product. if there's any sauces you really like try to keep some on hand. gochujang+soy sauce+sesame oil+sugar+broth can be really good in a stir fry, and basically all of those things will last a long time.
anyway theres a lot of text about cooking. theres a reason i stayed working in kitchens for almost 5 years despite how shit working in kitchens is. i like food and cooking. its one of the few things humans have been doing for a bajillion years and its necessary to live a healthy life and if you can find some fun and peace in the process then thats even better. theres no shame in not knowing how to cook but there is shame in refusing to try and learn imo
insert senshi page about eating well and exercising regularly to live a healthy life

Hey besties, sooo... Idk if y'all remember me from that last post 🙄💅
MINORS DNI
BUT! I would like to write more fics, this is actually a nice coping skill and I've been writing a few in my notes (tee hee🤭). I think my therapist would appreciate me having a new coping skill, plus I can cater to y'all FREAKS 🥴
So, please write some suggestions for me to write more! I can do more than Jason Voorhees & would like to expand my skillz as a lil low-key writer 👉👈

Hey my dear, so sorry for like randomly just showing up here but it's about your Finn Wolfhard hot take? About if he was "less attractive" the GA would have an easier time believing he was gay?
I absolutely do not mean this in a disrespectful way, simply as a GA perspective. Because whilst I am obsessed with ST, the people I watch Party with are not. And I promise you, not a single person in my friend group, family, or work, thinks Finn Wolfhard is attractive unless they are Gen Z. For the dudes, Finn is in the Timothee Chalamet category of they DO NOT see the appeal. For most women, he's not "attractive" mostly because he's so very young. Cute maybe, but anyone that is in the actual catchment of the ST target audience is a little too old to find Finn attractive. Which isn't to say that some don't, because I know people do, but I mean generally it's Gen Z. So it's not that. But I find your perspective on that so very interesting! But no disrespect to Finn in anyway, but as a wild generalisation, that's kind of how it is.
I think maybe I get what you mean though, if he exhibited more stereotypical tropes that are associated with LGBTQ+ men on film because most older people can't accept that he doesn't dress like Elton John or pitch his voice higher or whatever bullshit they expect. If you know what I mean?
I do 100% think it has a lot to do with the fact he was marketed as one of the core 6 characters in season 1, apparently that IS hard to swallow? Which is bullshit. But alas, the world we live in! Sorry again for dropping in, just found your post very interesting and I didn't mean this in a rude way AT ALL so I'm very sorry if the tone hasn't translated well. But anyway, I hope you have a lovely day <3
what i meant it most straight people see as a "shame" that someone attractive might be queer because they see it as a waste... which will forever puzzle me endlessly because it's not like they stand a chance either way 🧐 this applies to fictional people too and i'm not going to go full discourse on how attractiveness plays a role on the successfulness of someone's acting career because finn is an extremely talented actor and 100% deserves more recognition than just having a good face but yeah whether you're older or younger i'm pretty sure most people would agree he's objectively goodlooking also he's THAT main character.. ig that in straight ppls eyes if someone is "ugly" they're not a good representative of them as hets so it doesn't matter whether they're gay or not but if they're hot it's like they're losing a strong soldier or smth idk they're so weird sometimes
edit: also this may not be something you seen people comment online because they'd probably think it's inappropriate lmao (it would) but it's definitely something they think to themselves or mention to other people in conversations

wtf the age police are here again 🤦🤦🤦 what's up with these lil kids who like to throw hate at people bc of their age, and YET THEY RE STILL FOLLOWING YOU ALL?? i really don't understand these younger generation. i was in another fandom 10 years ago and generally everyone was just really kind to each other? like no one will go "age-shaming" people whether it's on tumblr or on twitter. if you vibe with ppl, you vibe with them, we were there bc we had the same interest and hobby - we didn't care about age and all. it was only i returned to the fandom community in recent years that i see young stans would do this, and use the "minor card" when they do something stupid but still refuse to apologise. umm, you can't be stupid forever, kids 🤦
i have another writer friend who also gets this kinda message despite not being a super huge blog. and i swear these people follow them AND have their notifs on bc they always respond to their latest posts on anon with hateful words even before i could see it 🤡🤡 pathetic people like these really exist 😑
this ☝️
i have experience being one of the younger fans in another fandom and i hold a lot of respect to older people in the fandom. i'm always so amazed with their creativity. i've also seen how they also respect the younger ones. it's a very healthy relationship between fandoms. but now, it's always fanwars. why can't we enjoy kpop like how we used to? just enjoying the music and supporting our idols. 😔
i'm really not sure why there are hate anons like this. and i'm sorry that your friend had to go through that. no one deserves to get hate for what they enjoy in life.
thank you for this message, love. 😍

hey! same anon who said that the quotes around affirmation felt very terf-like. first i wanted to say that your response is exactly why i wanted to give you a chance to answer, but i was just letting you know how the way you wrote it came across to me (who is admittedly an american and maybe there’s a text difference for how things are written. we use quotes to dismiss an idea or to indicate sarcasm) and offer a reason as to why those people may have unfollowed without waiting to hear more from you. i think having a healthy conversation around how we treat dysphoria is important!
anyway! i think maybe the disconnect lies in what we call gender affirming care. i’m sure that’s the technical term for what results in medical transition in the UK, but it should be more general! i would absolutely agree that your experience where you sought counseling and worked out what your gender was and that transitioning wasn’t for you totally counts as gender affirming care. you weren’t pressured to transition and you were allowed to explore what you felt and what you needed. i have a friend who went through the same as you and feels better without having transitioned. i agree it’s also a shame that we have no way to keep track of people who have done this.
in a perfect world, counseling would be the best step for a young person who’s figuring out their gender. in fact, that was a requirement here in the US for a loooong time before someone could see an endocrinologist for hormones. to reiterate my point from my last ask though, not all counselors are one in the same about how they counsel people. i say this 1. as a trans person who (briefly) went through conversion therapy as a teen, and 2. as someone about to graduate with a masters in counseling. they drill into us in my program that we aren’t supposed to let our beliefs change how we counsel someone, but it does happen. so, just like many of the medical clinics here in the US that would turn away young ppl trying to transition, i also worry about how many of them would be affected by counselors who would steer them from the help they need. i hope that made sense, i just wanted to kind of add that to the conversation.
Tbh i tried to italicise the word affirmation but tumblr mobile kept fucking it up 🫠 so yeah the marks were just emphasis.
Like you said in a perfect world there should be more steps of evaluation. (Honestly, in a perfect world no one would be trans but that's another thing to discuss) but if we're talking about improving the current system, it should really be reframed 'gender related care'. Or gender considerate psychoanalysis. Or gender focussed counseling. Any of these terms instantly imply a more neutral and comprehensive approach.
But yes despite a rebranding or the terminology its still soo hard to get true impartially from anyone involved! Even you being trans, if you become a professional counselor that would create a personal bias within you. Just as being a woman or man, being rich, or black or old, etc, would do.
Regarding the approach to treatment of gender dysphoric youth, time is the biggest teller. Not statistics about trans peoples deaths and lives (which we don't even have enough of to draw conclusions. Its still a fairly modern thing!), not the opinions of your parents, not the advice of an affirmation clinic or a conversion therapist; but most importantly, not even your own feelings can be said to be true and trustworthy and permanent. People change their minds every day about trivial things and major issues, you feel like a different person every year, you learn and grow and its a humans' lifelong task to find and understand oneself. So, like you, I'm also worried about those being steered in a particularly firm direction at a young age. Whichever that direction is! Neither affirmation or conversion therapy should be the only immediately presented choices because you can't know how the individual's inner feelings will grow and change as they get older. That's why words like 'affirmation' and 'life saving' and even 'living your truth' are so loaded; they constantly present that one route as the best option and the younger you start the better, the way you think now is how you'll think forever, and you'll just die otherwise.

First of all Baek, happy belated birthday! You're so young bestie, but enjoy your immortality! Hope you get Seonghwa as a gift, but don't forget to share! 🎉
People absolutely do simp for clowns and I don't know how to feel about it, because clowns is one thing, but murderous clowns? That's a bit too much. 🤚🏻
Please I'm so mad, everyone on my timeline is seeing Ateez in Anaheim, even some of my friends. People in California I hate y'all! I'm currently in Berlin seeing DPR Live later today even though I didn't plan on doing it (and I might run into a "friend" I don't wanna see so rip) and tomorrow I'm going to a drag show. I'm just gonna pretend I'm seeing Ateez 🤡
I thought ToMoons were normal, but this whole issue proved there are many delulus in the fandom. And what is this person on about 😭 leave them alone if you can't support ot5. Btw two members of Treasure have left, 2022 isn't stopping... I don't follow the group, but I know Yedam was their best vocalist and trained for years so wtf
Sometimes they correct the mistakes during music shows, but only if they're more visible. I remember Ateez taking another shot once, but then with other small mistakes they didn't, tbh I usually don't notice anyway. But I saw Stray Kids make some mistakes - Woojin literally left mid-promo - so they struggled a bit
Please not Inkigayo sandwiches, I eat weird shit but no no no no ☠
Speaking of model Seonghwa...
"tbh i don’t even watch lives if psh isn’t in it" jshshshsushshdhshhs okay, but same. 😭 I usually don't watch lives in general, sometimes they play randomly and that's it. But Twitter is good for that, I don't need to watch shit yet still see the best bits!
I hope Exoplanet is real, but also if you can't go what's the point bestie :/
Baeksy can you believe I'm suddenly back to uni and got myself a boyfriend too?! Look it's HIM 😊😊😊😊
I can't with this fucking guy?!?!? 🧎🏼‍♀️I wanted to send the same thing, because what in the strip club?! Another WIP - Hwa as a night club dancer 🤚🏻
Poor Maddox, hopefully Hongjoong eventually replies/ed, but you're right Park Seonghwa would respond in a second <3
Why would booktook people take the website down? Omfg that Hoover woman and her followers are such a menace, my friend works in a bookstore and everytime someone buys/orders her books she dies inside a little bit.
Oh no, Yeosang viral zipper moment, the likessss 😭
???
The sneaky tongue I CANNOT he's a snake for real.
Also omg CHOI MINHO first solo album apparently?! And did you see Shinee's season's greetings?! From classical musicians to cereal lmao. It's a shame Minho's drama got indefinitely postponed, but I understand considering the tragedy
Hear me out: Seonghwa as a college student and part-time worker AU, he works at a bakery and laundry place (he does a terrible job at both but I go there every day) perhaps he's a night club dancer too 🙈 DV 💖

Text
I came across another one of those "there is absolutely zero homophobia in this story about queer characters that's amazing !!! " posts (Or at least the op was intent on reading no homophobia at all in the text even when it was hinted at). And those types of post always give me such weird mixed feelings. I have seen a lot of them in the last few years.
I'm not discussing anyone's personal preferences - that is entirely up to them. And I also agree that I want more stories where queerness is not a big deal and people's problems come from other places. And queer characters can have the same amount of fun fluffy romance.
HOWEVER in the way ppl talk about queer stories (thinking predominantly abt book related spaces) these days it's often like any kind of obstacles or adversity makes it "bad representation" and honestly...that kind of worries me.
That's partly a matter of personal taste - a while back I went on a sapphic book reading binge and I found too many of them way too saccharine and boring and cutesy without depth.
But also - there is an element of cultural amnesia here that I can't help but link to the way some parts of online queer communities nowadays end up falling for conservative/queerphobic rhetoric often out of sheer ignorance (terfy bullshit, heteronormativity, assimilationism/wanting to be seen as normal at all costs/shaming queer people seen as too weird/gnc, sex negativity, gatekeeping, etc etc). It is still important for queer people who grow up in more progressive environments to know about the resorts of homophobia and heteronormativity. Because knowledge is power, and progress is never guaranteed.
Like it's amazing that more and more young people grow up without having to be worried about that stuff ! That's something the queer community has been fighting for for so long ! But still nowadays, a majority of queer people live in bigoted environments, and a majority of queer people alive have experienced homophobia and bigotry. And there is a subset of young, often very privileged in other ways, queer person generally living in ultra-liberal bubbles that I wish remembered this and was more mindful when they spoke. Because I have heard stuff that really made me angry - about how "tragic gay stories" were tired and annoying and overdone and less valuable. And like, personal taste, wanting more fluff, that's one thing. But calling stories that are often real people's past or even present worthless because they're kind of a bummer and not entertaining enough - well, that's deeply disrespectful, disturbing and circles all the way back to homophobic.
I was thinking about this the other day bc that mindset has influenced me in ways I don't like. I do often write homophobia into my stories and sometimes I feel kind of bad about it, wondering if it's like, perpetuating cliches or exploitative etc etc. But actually fuck that noise. Homophobia had a huge impact on me growing up. I grew up in a deeply homophobic environment - I was called a d*ke in disgust before I was old enough to know what it was, I first learned about queerness through images of characters that were all sinister, ridiculous, pathetic, or predatory ; bisexuality meanwhile was either invisible or supposedly fake or psychopathic ; I grew up surrounded by people making shitty jokes and casually using slurs, bullying people who didn't adhere well enough to gender roles (and a few times that was me, too), my bff in HS was all like "gay guys are ok but queer women are gross" - I soaked up that shit like a sponge and it's no wonder I didn't figure out my sexuality until my early twenties - I had repressed the hell out of that shit because it was so scary. Even though my experiences were not as direct as other people, it was still the ambient background to those very formative years. And still today - like, we regularly hear on the news about lgbt people being attacked, one of those attacks happened a few blocks from where I live ffs, and I supposedly live in one of the most gay friendly countries on Earth ! So I am well within my rights to explore that shit through fiction.
Do I blame people for wanting a break from that ? Hell no ! I do too sometimes. But I do NOT want to hear bullshit about how queer stories that are less than perfectly happy are somehow bad, regressive or less valuable.
I think personally what I truly want is more nuance. Sometimes I feel like we switched right from having mostly super tragic stories where queer characters were completely crushed by overwhelming oppression to a predominant mood that is very, like..."feel good stories only, homophobia is solved!!!!! If you still feel bad it's all in your head you're stuck in the past/annoying and we don't care about your trauma!!!!!" (hmmm big toxic positivity and online performativity vibes). I think the stories that have brought me the most, personally, are those where queer characters still experience some level of oppression but manage to fight the system/find some measure of joy and happiness regardless/crush their bigoted enemies while being very badass about it, all the while having epic romances and very full lives and also other complex problems.
I mean there is probably media that does this that I haven't found yet (pls send me recs if you have any). But it still feels too rare.
I don't only want fluffy escapism or idealism in fiction. I want to get strength and hope from characters who do manage to overcome less than ideal situations, I want to find recognition, I want to learn about other people's lives, and yes, sometimes, I want the catharsis and validation of tragedy.
And also ? I think you can still manage to address these things in stories and also have fluff and a happy ending. It's too often annoyingly one note, like characters who suffer too much are too broken to recover or hope/fluff is not believable in a world where bad things happen or you can't explore heavier topics in what is supposed to be a happier story like ! This feels like marketing segmenting bullshit to me. Life is beautiful and horrible all at once !!! The one doesn't exclude the other !!!!

🏳️‍🌈 nami, vivi, usopp :>
Nami: cis lesbian, she/her, v upfront about her sexuality and has never felt any kind of shame about it (mostly bc she was busy w/ other things tbh) she loves girls so much,, so much. she flirts w/ guys occasionally to get what she wants from them and fully takes advantage of the Male Gaze to get that ca$h money or knock a fool down for underestimating her. thinks guys are gross but very useful. she lets Sanji be Sanji bc she gets special treatment out of it and she's not gonna argue w/ that lmao
Vivi: trans woman, lesbian, she/her. came out when she was very young and her parents were very supportive (they had secretly wanted a daughter anyway) realized she liked girls a little before meeting Nami but was going thru too much shit to pay much attention to it. then she met Nami and was like "oh no ..... i'm .... gay ???" which added to her stress about Alabasta at first but then the Squad(tm) helped her realize that cool ppl won't care about that stuff and she took a chill pill. everyone thinks she has a crush on Kohzu and she's just like "haha ,, yeah .... ,, i mean why wouldn't i? i mean it's not like he's not my type at all and that i dream of red haired pirate women every night ha ha,,,"
Usopp: trans bi guy, he/him. like Vivi he's been out since he was little, just before his mom died. at first ppl in Syrup Village thought him being a boy was another ploy for attention or an aftereffect of his grief but they came to realize that his identity and him screaming about pirates coming were two different things. had a crush on Kaya, definitely, but also has a lil crush on Luffy and has admittedly stared at Zoro's muscles a little longer than strictly necessary at times 👀
part of him wanting to become a Brave Warrior of the Sea and just a Brave Man in general stems from dysphoria and him wanting to prove himself as a "real man." he gets jealous of Zoro and Sanji a lot bc they're physically stronger and sometimes he thinks that him not being stupidly strong like them means he rlly is a girl but then Nami smacks him upside the head and is like "ur a man if u say ur a man, u don't have to prove urself to anyone. being a man isn't a competition. those two are Not Normal and striving to be like them is a waste of the man u are. also insinuating that weak=female is p gross fam" and then she charges him 500 berries for her Wisdom and maybe he cries a little

Aah, sorry, I don't mean to be annoying but - I never thought too deeply into how they choose to present themselves and !!! Thinking on it, the most extravagant XL ever appeared was the god pleasing costume, right? And that's not even smth he chose, it's just the costume anyone playing the main role wears. As a prince, he always wore pretty and nice clothes but like. He never chose any of those. Mu Qing always dressed him and XL himself never gave af about what he wore, he was too focused on other things - cultivation and fighting, mostly. And then, of course, when he had nothing but that plain robe and he's fine with that, it's just. Not important to him. Meanwhile, HC, as you pointed out, puts a lot of thought into what he wears (clothes, jewelry, accessories etc.) and what form he appears in and so on and so forth. Of course, ppl are free to still put XL in pretty things and depict him as gnc! But thinking on it, it's really odd how fanon gets them switched up a lot 🤔 And a shame, lol.
On that note, next to the gnc HC agenda, I propose that there should be more content with SQX and HC being gnc together, lmao. HC actually tolerates SQX well enough, which is as close as to "like" we can go - SQX and HC gender shenanigans when?
U ARE NOT ANNOYING!! i love to have these discussions<333 that's such an interesting point about his relationship with this stuff though like, for him clothes were really a distraction/irritation and almost symptomatic of the obligations he chafes under. for him, wearing the same clothes all the time is kind of a reclamation of his own body (especially after what we went through physically as the god-pleasing crown prince...). it's not like he was particularly against all that finery but to my memory he never really showed any interest in it or missed it. and in that one extra where he's lost his memory, what he notices is the uncomfortable texture (insert autistic xie lian agenda 🤔) it feels important to note here again that in these examples what he would be performing is masculinity; his extravagant outfits pre-ascension should not be taken as gnc or feminine just because a modern western audience would take long hair and flowing clothes and jewellery as feminine. so people can depict him in these type of clothes without any incongruence, but i think it's also interesting to examine his relationship to them and what that would mean for him as a character rather than just being like yeah this means hes feminine actually:) it's also okay to hypothesise about his relationship to gender obviously ^_^ but i don't think there is all that much in the text that makes him obviously gnc, especially not over hc!! i feel like there is a lot more than gender to his relationship w clothes that i dont have the brainpower to explore rn (like i think he is in some ways aiming to look unassuming, and when people underestimate him it isn't what ppl seem to interpret as 'he seems weak and feminine' but 'look at this clueless weirdo in his poor person clothes'!) but. i just really love the contrast between xie lian being like "gender is a performance and im sleep 😌" and hua cheng being very aware of how he presents himself and his main goals in general being "look hot to xie lian" and "piss off heavenly officials" which his presentation has a lot of power to do. like it's even interesting how he chose to present himself as san lang, like he had every choice to be some 8ft muscle warrior but he wanted to be this unassuming (but very put together) young man and constantly be all ahhh gege protect me i'm so scared ! interesting how he almost went to great lengths to AVOID flexing his power in front of xie lian, but he was fine with flexing the knowledge and the painting which immediately made him suspicious. like. that's so interesting i would love to explore that!! he had hundreds of years to agonise over how he was going to introduce him to xl and he decided on that side ponytail and slutty collar...
also i agree with u so much like i want hua cheng and sqx girl best friends agenda. i want hc challenging xl on his lame attitude to sqx's gender<3 its so interesting how the supposedly gnc xie lian is willing neither to perform gender nor to challenge it, while hc is like just having fun with it. two different relationships to gender which r both #valid but i would love to see them explored rather than xl is small and weak and feminine, hc is big and strong and masculine -_-
