You Can Start a Family (Chapter 5)
Tumblr media
Summary: Another few days spent with Mitch and Sarah lead to more developments in your relationship.
Previous Chapters: One ; Two ; Three ; Four
TW for this chapter: It contains smut
I did have one person mention that these posts aren't showing up for them, I'm guessing because the story now has a mature community label, so let me know if you want to be added to the taglist so you don't miss anything!
Hope you enjoy, and would love to know what you're thinking of the story so far!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following week is busy at work. Ryan’s mom, Beth, is a high school teacher and has been stuck working longer hours, as it was the end of a marking period as well as the week before spring break. You and Ryan had started going on more outings. You were busy taking him to baby music class, and story time at the local library.
Sarah and Mitch had also started to spend more time at the studio, often going for hours or even the whole day. You hadn’t seen them all week, and after having spent a whole weekend together, you were missing them.
Finally on Thursday you see them for the first time in days. You’re loading Ryan into his car seat as they get out of their car across the street.
They walk over to you waving hello before leaning in to say hi to Ryan.
“How are you love?” Sarah asks. “We’ve missed you,” she says as Mitch nods in agreement.
“I missed you guys too,” you say with a shy smile. “I’ve been good, crazy busy. We’re trying different activities for Ryan. His mom wants him socializing with other kids and burning some energy. Which definitely is needed. Plus, he switched to one nap a day so there’s a lot of time to fill.” You realize you’re once again rambling and turn the conversation to them, asking, “What have you been up to?”
“Mitch got some inspiration for new music, so we’ve been working on that.”
“That’s so cool! Can I hear some of it?”
“Sure kid,” Mitch replies. “Are you free anytime soon?”
“Ryan’s family is going away for Easter this Sunday and taking a long weekend, so I’ll be off next Monday and Tuesday. If you’re free, maybe we could have another sleepover? My apartment this time.” You blush, nervous that you sounded too forward.
“What are you doing for the holiday?” Sarah asks.
“Honestly, probably nothing. Maybe make a special meal or something. What about you guys?” You notice they didn’t acknowledge your invitation and grow more worried that they no longer want that aspect of their relationship with you. Before your mind spirals, Mitch answers.
“My aunt and uncle are visiting for a couple days,” Mitch answers before continuing, “And you will be coming over for dinner.”
“I really don’t want to intrude-” Sarah cuts you off, saying, “Y/N, you will be coming over for dinner. No question. You’re never intruding. And if you don’t mind, maybe we could come over on Sunday after dinner and stay a couple of days?”
Your face lights up and you reply, “I absolutely would not mind.” At that moment Ryan starts loudly babbling, tired of listening to the adults. “I should get going, story time starts soon.”
Sarah leans in and gives you a light hug, saying, “Of course! Sounds like we’ve got a great plan.” She pulls back and Mitch rests his hand on your shoulder for a second before squeezing once and pulling away. You know that these are the only types of contact you can have with them in public. Even if you were spotted, those casual touches wouldn’t raise any suspicions.
You double check that Ryan’s car seat straps are tight enough and continue with your afternoon. You have newfound energy now that you know that you’ll be spending multiple days with Mitch and Sarah.
Friday passes quickly and you keep busy on Saturday, doing a much deeper clean than usual since you would be having guests. You also go food shopping and make sure to pick up ingredients for an appetizer and a dessert which you make Sunday morning before heading over to the Rowland’s house in the early afternoon.
Mitch’s father answers the door and leads you into the kitchen where the rest of the family is congregated. You’re greeted by Mitch, Sarah, and Tammy, and introduced to Mitch’s aunt and uncle. You have a wonderful afternoon with everyone, enjoying the stories they’re all telling.
After dessert is over, and you finish playing a few rounds of a card game that got way more competitive than expected, you’re saying goodbye to Mitch’s family. He and Sarah each grab their bags and walk out to your car with you.
It’s a quick drive to your place and next thing you know, Mitch and Sarah are walking around your apartment, complimenting the view and decorations.
“This apartment really is beautiful. I love the windows and it’s so spacious in here,” Sarah says.
“There aren’t many perks to most of your family dying in your early 20’s, but being the sole recipient of all life insurance payouts and inheritances would probably be the one bright side.”
They both stare at you, as they do when you mention your trauma so nonchalantly.
“What?” you say, “I’m talking about the positives! Don’t give me those faces. Anyone want some water?” You decide it might just be best to move on from the discussion of your dead relatives. You grab a couple bottles of water from the fridge and hand one to each of them asking, “Do you guys want to sit out on the deck?”
They agree and you lead them outside to show them one of your favorite parts of your apartment. It’s a decently large deck, big enough to fit an outdoor loveseat plus another comfy chair, and since you’re a corner unit, it faces the woods behind your building, allowing for privacy. You sit in the single chair, leaving them to share the loveseat. You start to tell them about the wildlife you’ve seen in the woods, then point out the constellations you could see.
You all spend a few minutes sitting quietly enjoying each other’s company as well as the mild early spring weather. You feel a hand on your arm and know that it’s Sarah. You turn to her, and she gently pulls you, saying, “You’re too far away, come here.”
You get up and stand in front of them, not sure exactly where to sit. She pulls you down so that you are seated sideways on her lap, your legs extended over Mitch. He runs his hands over your shins and Sarah wraps her arms around your waist, holding you close. After another few minutes of listening to the calm sounds of the night you feel Sarah brushing your hair over your shoulder so she can start to kiss your neck.
Your eyes close at the feeling of her lips on your skin and of Mitch’s hands traveling higher on your legs. You slowly turn your head and seek out Sarah’s lips with your own. Neither of you hesitate to deepen the kiss, tongues immediately searching each other’s mouths. Mitch leans in to take over peppering your neck in kisses, occasionally switching to do the same to Sarah. He eventually turns you away from Sarah to himself, and you get lost in the feeling of kissing him. Next thing you know you’re watching them make out in front of you as your hands absently trail along their skin.
You all continue on like this for a while, getting lost in the sensations.
“Should we head inside?” Sarah asks, and you nod your head.
You all stand up, Mitch steadying both you and Sarah. You walk into your bedroom, immensely glad you had decided to splurge on the king bed. You stop just in the doorway and feel Mitch’s hand on your lower back. You’re equal parts excited and nervous about what’s about to happen, and you wonder if you’ll ever move past your nerves. You feel Mitch’s lips against your ear, and he asks, “Would you like to learn something new tonight?”
You turn your head to him, eyes practically crossing trying to look at him when he’s so close, and you nod again. He turns to whisper something to Sarah, and she smirks before climbing in bed and leaning against the headboard.
“C’mere, love,” she says to you, and you climb up the bed towards her. She pulls you in and says, “Mitch thinks we can teach you some different things to do with your mouth, what do you think?” Your eyes practically roll back in your head at the suggestion. You bite your lip and nod before saying, “I think that’s a great idea.” You start kissing her neck, biting gently as though overeager at the idea of using your mouth to please them.
Clothes are thrown off bodies and onto the floor. You start to kiss down Sarah’s body. You’re leaving kisses on the inside of her thighs when you suddenly feel kisses on your own thighs from behind. You glance back to see Mitch is behind you, just as bare as you and Sarah.
“Just follow along with Mitch,” Sarah says. You’re confused for a moment but then gasp as you feel him lick along your core. You understand what Sarah meant and lean to do the same to her. The sounds she lets out spur you on, each whimper turning you on even more and you barely hold yourself back from pushing closer to Mitch’s mouth.
You take note of the different things he does with his lips and tongue and recreate the moves to the best of your ability on Sarah. You feel the familiar tightening in your belly as your orgasm approaches. You hum in pleasure and the vibrations push Sarah over the edge. She grabs your hair, careful not to pull too hard. You work her through her orgasm and a second later fall into your own.
You lay your head on Sarah’s stomach as you both catch your breath. Her fingers weave through your hair as Mitch presses light kisses to your back. He climbs up towards Sarah, and she pushes him to lay on his back. Your eyes meet Sarah’s, and she beckons your closer. You crawl up to kiss her, then Mitch.
You think about what today’s lesson is, and take a deep breath before moving back down, this time trailing kisses along Mitch’s torso. You kiss just above his groin and look at his hard cock before glancing back to Sarah, silently asking for advice on what to do next.
She starts to whisper instructions in your ear, and you lean down to wrap your lips around him. He groans and clutches the sheets to keep himself from thrusting into your mouth. At Sarah’s direction you switch between sucking on what you can fit in your mouth and running your tongue along his length and around his tip. After a few minutes he pulls you off of him and sits up so he can press his lips to yours and you share a kiss so messy you can feel your teeth clashing against his.
“You did so good, baby,” he says in your ear before nipping at your neck and pulling away. He turns to Sarah and kisses her before pulling her onto his lap. He reaches down, and in a move so practiced and smooth that you almost miss it, he slides inside her. They both throw their heads back, moaning as they come together before sharing a moment of eye contact. You realize he’s checking in that she’s okay before they start to move together. You’re fascinated by what’s playing out in front of you. Sure, you’re turned on, but you’re more curious to watch than participate. That doesn’t mean they’re okay with you being left out, and they make sure they each have a hand somewhere on your body the whole time. You watch Sarah fall apart, Mitch following right after.
You all collapse onto the bed, a jumble of limbs, bright smiles on everyone’s faces. You’re once again surprised at how right this feels. You fall asleep with your head on Sarah’s chest, hand clasped with Mitch’s over her.
The next day you again wake up first. You slide out of bed, throw on some clothes, and go to the kitchen to make a cup of tea and reflect on the night before. You think about how safe they make you feel and how patient they are teaching you about intimacy. You’ve been so scared about being physical with someone that you thought it might never happen. But now you think back to how gentle Mitch was with Sarah, how he made sure to check in with her, and you start to think that you might be ready to have that as well.
Mitch and Sarah join you in the kitchen and you make them tea as well. As you set the mugs down Mitch’s phone starts to ring with an incoming FaceTime call. You glance at it and are surprised to see that it’s Harry calling. Harry Styles. Somehow you had yet to interact with him at all even though you’d been hanging out with his best friends for weeks.
Mitch answers the call and starts talking to Harry. Sarah quietly laughs at the look of panic on your face. You take some deep breaths, forcing yourself to stop fangirling before you somehow make a fool of yourself in the background of the call. You’ve just managed to contain your excitement when Mitch pulls you over to officially introduce you to Harry. You learn that he does know who you are, and Mitch and Sarah have apparently been talking about you to their friends.
It’s a short call, Harry had just wanted to check in on everyone and soon they hang up. Breakfast that morning is simple, everyone pouring a bowl of cereal and you discuss what to do that day.
“Do you still want to hear some of Mitch’s new music?” Sarah asks and you answer with an enthusiastic, “Of course I do!”
After everyone showers and gets ready for the day, you all drive over to the studio. Mitch plays two of the songs he’s working on, and you listen closely, watching in amazement as he sings the songs he wrote himself.
“I was wondering if you could help me with something,” he says timidly after you compliment him on his music.
“Sure, what is it?” you reply.
“I’ve got some ideas for guitar harmonies and want to test them out against the melody. If I tell you the chord progression, would you be able to play melody so I can see if it all works together?”
“Yes, absolutely.” He teaches you what to play and you spend the next couple of hours working on his songs, fascinated to see what goes on behind the scenes.
When you all start to get hungry you leave the studio to pick up sandwiches for lunch. You mention a walking trail nearby that has great views and you decide to take your lunch there. It’s a short walk to the first outlook and you settle there to eat. You ask Mitch and Sarah about their childhoods, wanting to know more about them. You continue your questions after lunch when you’re all walking towards the waterfall at the end of the trail.
When you reach it, Sarah starts taking pictures, including a selfie of the three of you which she immediately sends you. You’ll later make that your phone background, but no one needs to know that.
You start walking back and Mitch says, “So, I was thinking we could all go to Bella Luna’s tonight for dinner.”
You’ve heard of Bella Luna’s before. It’s one of the nicer restaurants in town. Ryan’s parents have gone there a couple of times for date nights, and you know it’s viewed as highly romantic.
“Oh, I’ve heard great reviews about that place,” Sarah replies with a cheeky smile. You nod and agree and spend the rest of the afternoon wondering what this fancy dinner might mean.
Back home everyone starts getting ready. Mitch informs you that the reservation is set for 6PM and you wonder when he set that up, as he hadn’t been on his phone at all that day aside from talking to Harry. You also realize that they both had fancy clothes packed and wonder if they had planned this ahead of time.
You walk out of your bathroom after getting changed, smoothing down your dress and fiddling with your hair to make sure it’s lying just right. You look up and see Mitch and Sarah staring at you.
Sarah walks over and places her hands on your hips, saying, “You look amazing,” before pulling you in for a kiss. “You look amazing too,” you reply after breaking apart. Mitch walks up to you saying, “You both look beautiful,” and you each kiss and compliment him as well.
You have a wonderful time at dinner. The conversation flows naturally, and the food is delicious. There’s never an awkward silence, and you realize how compatible you all are in every way.
Once back at your apartment, the evening goes like the one before and you find yourselves again out on the deck. Instead of you sitting on the chair, Mitch immediately pulls you on the loveseat with him and Sarah, and you’re sat half in each of their laps.
“Dinner tonight was delicious, thank you for taking me there,” you say.
“Of course, love,” Sarah replies. “We needed to make our first date special.”
At the word date you quickly turn to her, a shocked and confused expression on your face. You knew they cared about you, knew they were interested in you physically, but hadn’t dared to hope for the relationship to take this turn.
No one has ever expressed interest in you this way before, and here are two wonderful people wanting to bring you into their relationship. Two people who had everything they could want, but still opened themselves up to another person.
“We really care about you, Y/N,” Mitch says, and you turn to look at him. “Not just in a friendly or familial way. We care about you the way we care about each other.” Sarah is nodding in agreement, and you reply, “I care about you both too. More than anyone else.”
“I know this won’t necessarily be easy,” Sarah says. “It’s a complicated dynamic, especially with us being so well known publicly. But Y/N, we want to be with you. We want you as part of our relationship. Would you like that too?”
“I would. I really would. I know it’ll be difficult, and we’ll have to keep it a secret, but I want a relationship with you both. Being with you two just feels right in a way nothing ever has before.”
“We feel the same way,” Mitch replies.
They each press a kiss to your lips before sharing one with each other. The three of you sit there in an embrace, and the fact that you’re in a relationship sinks in. You can’t help the huge smile that breaks out on your face.
“What is it?” Mitch asks, noticing your expression.
“Nothing,” you reply. “I’m just really, really happy.”
“We are too,” Sarah says and meets you for another kiss. Mitch turns you towards him and he quickly deepens the kiss. This time you don’t get lost in the feeling, too lost in your thoughts of what you want to happen next.
Mitch notices your hesitance and pulls away asking, “What’s wrong, baby?”
You shiver at the nickname, holding one of his hands in yours and fidgeting with his fingers while building up the nerve to tell him what you’re thinking.
“Nothing’s wrong. I just. There’s something I want to do. And it makes me really nervous, but I think that I’m ready.” You pause a moment before continuing, “I know that I’m ready. To do this. With you.”
With the hand you’re not currently holding, Mitch cups your face to bring you to look at him. “Y/N, what is it you want to do?”
Even just saying the words feels impossible, not used to wanting this, let alone asking for it. “I, uhm, I want to- I’m ready to go all the way.”
He looks you in the eyes before asking, “Are you saying that you want to have sex with me?” You try to look away, somehow both embarrassed and turned on at the blunt way Mitch is clarifying your desires. “Because it’s absolutely okay if you do. I want to do that too. But only if you’re really ready,” he continues.
“I am,” you say firmly. “I’m ready. I’ve always been so scared of sex, but I saw the way you were with Sarah last night and, I dunno, I just know that you’d take care of me. I realized I don’t have to be scared with you. With either of you,” you finish, reaching one of your hands to rest on Sarah’s leg.
“Of course I’ll take care of you baby,” he says. “It’s all we want to do.” He leans in and presses his lips to yours, picking up where he left off a few minutes earlier. You feel like you’re too far away from him and move to straddle his lap. His hands immediately go to your waist, pulling you in so you’re flush against him.
You feel his hard cock against you and begin to grow excited at the thought of what’s about to happen. He guides your arms around his neck and tells you to hold on tight. The next moment he stands from the couch, hands sliding to your bottom to support you so he can carry you inside. The three of you make your way to the bedroom, and Mitch lays you down on the bed, immediately crawling on top of you.
You get lost in the feeling of Mitch’s tongue stroking yours, on his hands sliding along your body. You tug on his shirt and break away to pull it off of him. He does the same to your dress and within minutes all of your clothes are on the floor. His fingers are at your entrance, slipping in one at a time to slowly open you up.
You look over to see that Sarah is fully clothed and you pout. She notices your expression and says, “I’m okay love, I just want to watch tonight. This is a special moment for you.” You reach out your hand to hold on to hers and she passes something to Mitch before sliding her fingers between yours.
You hear a noise and look back to Mitch and realize what Sarah had handed him. He opens the condom wrapper and slips it on before running the head of his cock through your folds. He looks at you and asks, “Are you sure?” Without hesitating you tell him you’re sure, that you want this.
He lines himself up and starts to push in. You gasp at the stretch and squeeze Sarah’s hand. Mitch leans down to pepper kisses and love bites along your neck as Sarah runs her free hand on your stomach. You focus on those feelings as Mitch continues to push in, checking that you’re okay throughout.
Finally, he’s flush against you, letting out a loud groan in your ear at the feeling of you wrapped around him. Tears leak out of your closed eyes and you’re unsure if they’re from the uncomfortable pressure of being filled for the first time or from the overwhelming emotions running through you.
Sarah wipes away the tears, leaning in to quietly say, “You’re doing so well, love.” After a moment of letting you adjust, Mitch checks in again to see how you’re feeling, and if you want him to continue or pull out.
“Keep going, I’m good, please, you can keep going,” you tell him in a breathy voice you’ve never heard from yourself before.
He starts to move, slow thrusts at first before building up a rhythm after he’s sure you’re ready for more. It doesn’t take long to switch from uncomfortable pressure to intense pleasure. You’re still holding one of Sarah’s hands in yours and she uses her free hand to rub circles on your clit. You’re lost in the sensations, Mitch inside you, Sarah adding to the pleasure, both of their lips leaving kisses all over your body. It all builds until you come with a loud moan, clenching around Mitch. It’s an intense feeling, one that causes you to see stars, and you’re only vaguely aware of Mitch reaching his orgasm just after you.
They both slow down before stilling completely. Mitch tucks his face into your neck saying, “I’m gonna pull out now, okay babe?” You nod and he slowly pulls out as Sarah presses more kisses to the top of your head.
Mitch gets off the bed and you whimper and reach for him, not wanting him to be far away from you. “Shh, love,” Sarah says gently. “He’ll be right back; he’s just gone to get a cloth to clean up.”
A moment later he’s back and uses a damp washcloth to clean between your legs. He slips on a pair of boxers and places a large t-shirt on the bed for you. You know he’s giving you the option to put it on if you’d like but not pressuring you to, and you realize how well he already knows what will make you most comfortable. You slip on the shirt as he climbs in bed next to you. As you curl into his side, Sarah gets up and you pout again but refrain from grabbing for her as well. She changes into pajamas and gets back under the covers, holding you tightly.
You fall asleep almost immediately, missing the whispered conversation between the other two.
“How are you feeling?” Mitch asks her. He knew they had talked previously about the possibility of you and Mitch having sex, but he still wanted to make sure Sarah didn’t feel any different after seeing it happen.
“Honestly?” She replies. “I feel great. Y/N said it earlier, it just feels right. Watching the two of you together was mesmerizing, and beautiful. I think I may have fallen even more in love with you.” He grabs her hand and squeezes gently. You stir in their arms, turning towards Sarah and tucking your face into her neck. They share a smile over you and fall asleep as well.
Shockingly, you’re the last one awake the next morning. When you do finally wake up, you realize you’re sprawled on top of Mitch, clinging to him. He’s running his fingers through your hair, and you feel so content you almost fall back asleep. Before you do, Sarah walks in with a tray full of food. You climb off of Mitch to sit in the middle of the bed and Sarah sets down the tray before sitting next to you.
You rest your head on her shoulder and she says, “Good morning love. You feeling okay?”
“I’m feeling absolutely wonderful,” you reply with a shy smile. You glance at Mitch and see he’s looking at you with a similarly fond expression. “I’m also suddenly starving,” you continue. “This looks amazing!”
They laugh at your enthusiasm for breakfast, and you all start to dig in.
“What would you like to do today,” Mitch asks.
“Nothing. I want to do nothing today. I want to stay here with the two of you and have a movie marathon or binge TV and just cuddle.”
“Sounds like a plan to me,” he replies.
And that’s what the three of you do. At lunch time you switch to hanging out in the living room instead of the bedroom, but that’s the extent of your effort for the day. They end up staying that night as well, brushing their teeth beside you in the bathroom before bed, and you revel in how domestic it feels.
They wake up bright and early with you the next morning and make sure to get their goodbye kisses before you all leave the apartment together. You drop them off in their driveway on your way to work and they each give you a quick hug before going inside the house.
You turn the car around and pull into Ryan’s driveway and sit in there for a moment before going into the house. You give yourself a couple minutes to think about the past few days, smiling and letting out a giggle when you can no longer contain the pure joy you feel.

Hey Key,
It feels appropriate to ask you whether I can vent this but I figure tumblr anon communication is a bit slow.
So I was on my way back to my college town on Easter Monday
An acquaintance (not friend) of mine visited family in the same city so we decided to take a train together
Frame of reference: I’m 25NB, she’s 20FTM (she prefers her feminine given name and she/her since she isn’t actively transitioning yet)
We are both physically disabled and mentally ill
Being the queer neurodivergent I am, I went !!! at her and immediately started talking because hey, commonalities!
Half an hour in we moved on from physical disability to talking about the mental stuff and I mention I’m self-do autistic. And she goes “Nah. You can’t be.” And I go “Huh?” “You’re too talkative! You’re ADHD, yes, but you are too social and talkative to be autistic.”
Like… gee, man, maybe because we have met a few times and immediately clocked you as queer and neurodivergent? You think that might be why I’m comfortable talking rapid-fire?
“Nah, we don’t know each other that well, so that can’t be it.”
Right… and then she told me she doesn’t “want to endorse self-dx” because she thinks she might be hypochondriac and therefor any and all self-dx or preemptive diagnose “might make things worse because I think it’s worse than it is”
Like, yes, I understand and she explained she does experience psychosomatic symptoms in response to being stressed/ burnt out. I don’t deny psychosomatic responses. I believe that.
But also she straight-up refuses to look up anything that might help her?? When we were talking about physical disability (we both have chronic pain) I immediately pulled out my phone to send some coping ressources and self-help stuff
And she went “no, I never look at [coping] things, I worry if I read that, I will just convince myself that I’m worse than I actually am.”
Which, okay, reasonable boundary…
I told her about how I started using a walking cane, on my own, decided for myself that it helps. And also how most of my splints/ bandages are self-bought and self-administered because no doctor acknowledged my chronic pain so far.
And she goes “I sometimes have days where I have to drag my leg. I’m like-paraplegic when my psychosomatic symptoms get to their worst. But I would never use a cane! I don’t want to stand out, you know? I don’t want to catch attention.”
And I’m sitting there screaming internally like “You are entitled to be seen! You deserve accommodations! You just said some days you could use a wheelchair!! What the FUCK?!”
Yeah… and the longer our talk goes on, the more I read between the lines that she believes “if I do everything right, it will mostly go away”
Like, she forced herself to stick to “fibro-diet” to combat her rheuma and fibro, which is great on the surface. And then she tells me she forces herself out of bed and forces herself to cook, even if she doesn’t feel like eating, but she just pushes through because “the anti/inflammation diet can help with rheumatism”
And just– …my internal screaming continued.
I don’t want to dislike her! I recognise she’s young(er) and she’s naive and blue-eyed. While I’m just a cynic who’s been depressed for the majority of my life and I stopped giving a fuck about “not standing out” because my neurodivergent ass is too autistic and too ADHD to interact with people without standing out
Like, I’m ““high-functioning”” but at the same time I’m the kind of autistic who never had the chance to fit in. I have always been and will always be “the standoffish weird kid”.
But I just feel bad for her and at the same time I know I don’t want to become friends with someone who’s this blue-eyed “it will all be good if I just do the right thing”
I’m frustrated with her as an acquaintance and I just know if she tries to become my friend I have to give her sooooo many lectures
Among all these other things about how she is allowed to be non-binary and how she doesn’t need HRT to be trans and how she doesn’t have to cower in fear of changes HRT would do to her body because even if she’s binary FTM nobody’s forcing her to go on testo.
Just… so much frustration after this one 3h train ride :/
Fully agree, tumblr anon communication is very slow. Especially on my blog. I go through moods where I answer a bunch of things at once and then dont for a while. (sorry) Long post under cut
First of all, I am so sorry about your friend invalidating your self-dx autism. Personally I'm all for self-dx, anyone whose dealt with doctors long enough knows how hard, how many hoops you have to jump through, and the amount of time and money required to get diagnosed with ANYTHING. I've definitely dealt with my fair share of non-medical professionals telling me both "You dont have this thing I have" but also "You definitely have this thing I dont have".
I see why you are frustrated by someone seemingly not wanting to help themselves. But it seems like she is trying, she just has never been exposed to the right resources to help her. Its kinda like. I went to a SUPER christian university, and there was this gay guy, wonderful dude. His view of his own queerness though? I had only read about people like him online until I met him. He was a pastors son, his whole life he grew up knowing that being gay was wrong and bad. He never had access to the resources he needed to learn how to love that part of himself. Not his own fault at all, but by the time he got to college, there was no changing his views. He now goes around preaching to other kids about his experiences being gay and how he represses it because God. He absolutely broke my heart.
My point it, your friend is young and naieve. She probably has never had access to the resources and information you have. Her experiences have probably been *wildly* different from yours. You can't force a 'fuck it' attitude onto someone like that. You just kinda have to wait and hope they grow into it on their own. Theres nothing wrong with not wanting to be friends with someone like that though. You are responsible for currating your own social experiences. I completely understand your frustration with the whole situation though.

EDITOR  It is fun and still amazes me when I visit a large city. I also see the part I dislike:  too many people in one place, house upon house, pollution, and traffic.  When I see huge suspension bridges and massive tall towers I am grateful I don't have to be the one to build them.  My feet are more comfortable on the ground.  Especially when I get back home. This beautiful place called Oconee County still amazes me.  Let us care for it so we can enjoy it and others can be amazed when they visit the beauty that makes us who we are and sets us apart. LRM

ASHTON RECALLS    Here's another story about Salem's quest to acquire a garment-manufacturing plant in 1953-54:
CONSTRUCTION OF NEW PLANT SET TO BEGIN - (The following story was in the February 10, 1954 Keowee Courier). . .Final plans were laid Thursday night at Salem for the construction of a 20,000 square-foot garment factory located on a four-acre tract just outside of the town. . .Construction will begin about March 1 and the plant, which will be occupied by Paintset Fashions, Inc., is expected to be in operation in October. Paintset, a nationally-known manufacturer of women's dresses and robes, already has two plants going full-blast in Walhalla. . .The Salem plant is expected to employ approximately 300 persons, and many of them will be Salem area residents who are now employed in the two Walhalla plants and will be able to work closer to home. . .The possibility of building the plant was first discussed a little less than a year ago when Salem area business and civic leaders, along with the Oconee County Planning and Development Board, met with Paintset officials in the school auditorium. . .The Salem citizens formed a corporation known as Salem Builders, Inc. and agreed to erect a building which would house the industry. In January of this year a charter was granted the organization by the secretary of state. . .At Thursday night's organizational meeting Oscar Wigington, Clyde Talley and Bruce Rochester were elected as directors and Mrs. Selma Talley was chosen to serve as secretary. . .The cost of the building will be between $90,000 and $100,000, which has been raised in pledges. Mrs. Talley said it is important that all pledges be paid by February 15 so that building materials can be purchased and delivered to the site in time to begin construction March 1.                                                         by Ashton Hester

Conservation minded:  Last week’s quote  was so great and timely it must be shared  again and again from a reader: “  I fully agree with your opposition to the "growth for the sake of growth" philosophy. There should continue to be cities for people who like city life and rural areas for more laid-back people.”
Sharing another farm property saved by the landowner! The Happy Berry >> in Pickens County. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Sharing a “Quick” Lesson:  “Why is part of the fingernail  called “the quick” ???
Quickening is the first feelings of life in the womb.  The “quick and the dead” refers to the living and the dead.  The “quick” part of the nail is  the part of the nail bed that meets the flesh.  The nail itself is dead, but the nail bed is alive.  Life itself can be like that.  Our bodies can be alive and going through the motions of life.  But in reality dead and meaningless  if we are not living or seeking our purpose through Christ, the true meaning and reason for life.
Prayer:  Heavenly Father, Guide us for Your Will as we bloom and truly live life abundantly where we are planted.  Let it show as joy, gratitude, and praise to You  as we care for your earth, through Christ who came to earth, that we might live!  Amen                                  Time to Live!   LRM

Dream Destination France
Tumblr media
France is the oldest and third-largest European nation with multiple cultural values. The country has six bordering countries which are; Italy and Switzerland towards the southeast, Germany and Belgium to the northeast, and Spain to the southwest. France has one of the most stable economies in Western Europe and is known for administrating a huge area of the sea. This country is located in the middle of western Europe. The history of France date backs to ancient times, which includes various battles, invasions, conflicts, and riots. France has seen a great number of era-defining events. The history of France is discussed later in the article to get a better understanding of the culture and the events that took place before France had become a wealthy and economically stable country.
The revolution of the French nation had a significant impact on building towards a stable and better nation and was considered an important part of the history of the European region. France has been an influential European country that takes an active part in different external affairs alongside civil affairs and governmental issues. The present government of France is providing the democratic states with inspiration on how a state/country should be administrated. The French movement made many reforms, and the French revolution was a noticeable growth for the coming generation.
The country is considered one of the most popular destinations for tourists as it has amazing architectural and natural beauty, multiple other activities, rich historical places, and buildings that became well-known tourist attractions.
Tumblr media
The culture of France has been shaped by geography, by historical events, and by foreign and internal forces and groups. France, and in particular Paris, has played an important role as a center of high culture since the 17th century and from the 19th century on, worldwide. From the late 19th century, France has also played an important role in cinema, fashion, cuisine, literature, technology, the social sciences, and mathematics. The importance of French culture has waxed and waned over the centuries, depending on its economic, political and military importance. French culture today is marked both by great regional and socioeconomic differences and strong unifying tendencies. A global opinion poll for the BBC saw France ranked as the country with the fourth most positive influence in the world (behind Germany, Canada and the UK) in 2014.[1]

Holidays and traditions in France – and how we celebrate them
The most important holidays in France are based on religion, changes in nature, or history.
France is a Catholic country so having a majority of holidays based on Catholicism should be no surprise.
A vast majority of French identify as Catholics, but when it comes to practising, it's a different story. Fewer than 5% of us go to church every week, with most people limiting church visits to Easter and Christmas − if that.
Even so, 6 of our 11 official holidays are Catholic.
These holidays, however, are rarely celebrated as religious feasts. They are opportunities to visit family, eat good food, or "faire le pont" − literally "make the bridge", say by taking Friday off when the holiday falls on a Thursday.
When it comes to holiday traditions in France, every opportunity is a good one.

Food prices
Transportation costs
Living costs in France relative to French salaries
So how much does it cost to live in France? To answer this question, let’s take a quick look at the average living expenses in France per month.
The average cost of living in France
The average cost of living in France per month for a single person is around €1,800. It's important to remember that this's just an estimate number, and your actual cost of living in France may be higher or lower depending on your location, specific needs, and lifestyle. For instance, if you live in Paris, the average cost of living can go up to €2,200 per month.

Since the cost of living varies between French cities, we've gathered a list of some of the most popular cities in France to compare their cost of living.

Regardless of whether you’re going to France to study or work, it’s better to start looking for your dream home early. Then you’ll surely find something that fits your budget!
Average utility prices in France
ExpenseAverage cost per monthWater€40 ($44)Electricity€79 ($87)Gas€70 ($77)Internet€30 ($33)Waste Collection€20 ($22)
Depending on your contract, utilities can be either included or excluded from your rent. Considering the increasing prices for utilities across Europe, we advise you to search for places with fixed utility costs included in your rent. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can recklessly use them; otherwise, you might have to pay extra for the additional costs.

DOs
1. Do say hello (“Bonjour”) upon entering an establishment (ie. store, restaurant, etc) before you begin browsing or asking questions. Say good-bye (“Au revoir”) upon leaving.
2. Do learn some French phrases. It will show you are making the effort to speak the language and shows respect. Some phrases:
Hello (“Bonjour”)
Thank you (“Merci”)
Excuse me (“Excusez-moi”)
Please (“S’il vous plaît”)
I am lost (“Je suis perdu”)
Where are the bathrooms? (“Ou sont les toilettes?”)
I don’t speak French. In English please (“Je ne parle pas Francais. En Anglais, s’il vous plaît”)
3. Do realize that to use the washroom in places such as a train station or department store, you will have to pay a nominal fee (ie. 0.35 Euros)
4. Do take the metro (subway) and hang onto your ticket until you leave your station.  You could be checked by the police and fined if you don’t have your ticket stub.
5. Do remember to validate your ticket before you board a train. Validating machines are located at the entrance to the “quai” or platform.
6. Do dress appropriately. Jeans are OK, but shorts, flip flops, and running shoes are not. They are for the beach and exercising.
7. Do shake hands with acquaintances or “air kiss” those who are close to you when you are greeting the person. Air kissing involves bringing your cheek close to the other’s cheek as if you are going to kiss the cheek. It is a ritual, called “Faire la bise” and indicates friendship. The number of kisses depends on the region. In most of France, one kisses each cheek once; however, in other areas, it could range from 3-5. What side to start on? I have read one starts on the right; however, opinions differ.
8. Do consider a “Prix Fixe” menu, which will include a starter, main course, and dessert at a fixed price. Some restaurants have prix fixe menus with many choices for each course. Some offer menus which include some wine.
9. Do consider ordering a “pichet” of wine. Technically, it is a “jug” of wine, but really it is a carafe of wine and comes in different sizes: 25 cl or 50 cl.  (250 ml or 500ml). It is the restaurant’s house wine and is very often very good and a good deal.
10. Do expect to find the sale of wine and liquor in grocery stores and the store, Monoprix.
Tumblr media
DON’TS
1. Do not use “Tu” (you) to address another person unless that person is quite familiar to you. Use “Vous”, as it is more formal.
2. Do not take out coffee and drink it while walking down the street. Drink it at a cafe, either standing at a bar or sitting at a table.
3. Do not touch the produce at an outdoor market. Simply indicate to the seller what you want
4. Do not order a cafe au lait to end your meal. This drink is taken at breakfast.
5. Do not rush your meal.  The French enjoy their time to relax over a coffee or meal. You should too and take at least 2 hours to savor the flavors.
6. Do not assume all stores will be open between 12-2 pm as this is when most people have lunch.
7. Do not assume everyone speaks and understands English.
8. Do not (have to) tip as the 15% service charge is included in the bill most of the time. The bill will say, “Service Compris”.  However, it is a custom to leave an additional few Euros at dinner if the service was exceptional.
9. Do not expect to get ice in your drink. It is just rare to find drinks with ice in France as compared to North America.
10. Do not have dinner before 8:00 pm. It is more acceptable to have a pre-dinner drink (cocktail hour or “apero”) such as wine, beer, a kir or pastis between 7:00 and 8:00 pm. It can be served with nuts or crackers.

Climate and Average Weather in France
France is divided into multiple climate zones. The majority of the country has a temperate maritime climate which means it is generally cold in winter, mild in summer and rainfall is spread throughout the year.
The South and South West of France have a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers. The eastern part of the coastal area, the Cote D'Azur, is the sunniest part of France with more than 320 hours of sunshine in July. This month is the peak of summer and many tourists from all over Europe invade the south of France with caravans and tents.

Roman Theater of Cartagena
The Roman theater of Cartagena is the most important and most visited tourist site in the city. It was built between 5 and 1 BC and is one of the best examples of Roman architecture in southeastern Spain. Curiously it was not discovered until recently and much less since it can be visited. It is, without a doubt, an essential if we travel to the Region of Murcia.
It remained hidden and unknown to our society until in 1988, while they were carrying out works for a handicraft center in the Old Cathedral, they came across this magnificent theater. A few years later they began to adapt it so that, since the mid-2000s, it could be contemplated as we see it today.
However, it is estimated that the restoration work will not be completed until 2020, and it will not be until then that we will be able to see the finished portico.
Great importance
It was built in the time of Emperor Augustus and had a capacity for about 7,000 spectators. It has a cavea of 87.6 meters in diameter, making it one of the largest in Roman Hispania.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It should be noted that its materials have been kept in a very good state of preservation during all these centuries and up to 60% of the original materials were buried.
The museum
Tumblr media
Since 1999 it has been considered an Asset of Cultural Interest and is one of the most important examples of Roman architecture preserved in the Iberian Peninsula.

The price of the Roman theater of Cartagena
Admission to the museum and Roman theater, as a whole, costs 6 € general, 5 € reduced and 3 € for schoolchildren. In the group entitled to reduced admission are those who carry youth card, are students, unemployed, retired, disabled or families and groups of at least 20 members. There is a special ticket of 3 € only to visit the theater, but only for groups and schoolchildren, 3 and 2 €, respectively.
We must add the possibility of buying a joint ticket to visit other monuments and places of Cartagena. A good option if we plan to go to other sites, as this way we save some money. The entrance fee includes a guided tour that starts every hour. A highly recommended way to learn more about the history and the most important areas of the theater.
Schedules
From October 1 to April 30 (except Easter), the opening hours are from 10:00h to 18:00h from Tuesday to Saturday and from 10:00h to 14:00h on Sundays. Closed on Mondays. From May 1 to September 31 (except Easter Week), the opening hours are from 10:00h to 20:00h and from 10:00h to 14:00h on Sundays. Closed on Mondays.
Location map
The museum is located next to the Town Hall Square and is reached by two pedestrian streets. If we travel by car we must park it in the port area, where we will also find a parking lot open 24 hours. Another option is to get here by city bus, which stops very close on line 8.

April 1999 - New Zealand
Tumblr media
1 April 1999
New Zealand Ministry of Magic, Wellington
It was with a ‘thud’ I arrived in the international arrivals area at the New Zealand Ministry of Magic. Pain erupted up my left leg as it met whatever was underneath the grass.
Pushing myself up the best I could, I pulled out my phone. Dead. The amount of magic it had been around probably drained the battery. Hopefully, Eileen had gotten the message I’d sent during lunch.
Finally managing to get to my feet, a quick glace told me everything had managed to stay together.
“Welcome to New Zealand!” came a far too chipper voice to my right, and I bemusedly took in the figure standing there. “I’m Brian Redpath.”
He looked more like an airplane pilot or steward than a ministry official, though the dancing figures decorating his tie more than confirmed that he was.
“How long will you be here?” He asked, settling in at his desk. I stole a glance at the calendar sitting on the desk facing out. April 1st.
“Erm…” Ii rubbed my head. “Monday afternoon at the latest, so… Four… days? Sounds about right…”
“Visiting family?” he continued, jotting down something on a piece of parchment. I nodded. “And any restricted items?” I shook my head. That I had been very careful about.
“Please fill out the rest of the form, then you’re free to go.”
Filling out the rest of the details, I scribbled down the candy I’d brought to share, before scribbling my signature at the bottom. Tapping my wand at the bottom sealed it.
Finding the exit, I took in my surroundings. The ministry appeared to be set within the grounds of the muggle parliament here, not dissimilar to London.
As I made my way towards the street, I caught sight of a familiar, red-headed figure standing next to a shiny jaguar. “Ellie!” she cheered, waving her hand. “You made it!”
I hurried over the best I could, Eileen hurrying towards me as well. “Oh, am I glad to see you!”
A teasing smile flitted across her lips. “You must be really out of it, El.” She joked, taking my suitcase. “Oof, what’s in this? Bricks?”
I snorted a laugh. “What d’you think? Plenty of books and some candy to share with the family, along with some clothes for the next few days.”
We shared a laugh before making our way over to the jaguar. I noticed a familiar Pride of Portree scarf on the front seat as I slid in.
“Andre’s been here?” I asked, picking up the scarf to move it as Eileen got in. She blushed, but said nothing on it.
“We’re going to have to portkey up to Auckland,” she said instead. “I know it’s not entirely your favourite way to go…”
“It’s not as bad if it’s the car.” I noted. “Whiplash is the only problem.”
“Then buckle up,” Eileen ordered. “Because I’m not spending eight hours on the road again.” I shuddered in response and clicked it in place.
Another gut pull and we were at a road stop near Auckland, blinking in the sunlight. Twenty or so minutes later, we pulled into the drive of her house.
“…So mum and dad should be here, either tomorrow or Saturday. Elliott said he’s coming tomorrow…”
“Which means he’s on his way here already.” I deadpanned, still feeling the extreme time difference.
Suitcase extracted, we headed inside. Stepping in, it took more than a little willpower to just leave my suitcase and not crash face first on the bed.
Instead, I recharged on the couch, before Eileen dragged me out to the local grocery store for both some snacks for me and items for Easter. There were plenty of interesting things on the shelves and, between the both of us, managed to pick out a couple.
Getting back to Eileen’s, dinner was eaten and I crashed not long after, routine be damned. There was no way I was going to be able to stay up anywhere close to my usual time.
Elliott arrived the next morning, somehow surviving the brutal time change like a champ.
It also turned out that he and our parents had coordinated their arrivals.
We had just enough time to grab something to eat, before mum and dad arrived in not much better shape than I had been. A round of hugs, and we ended up walking along the quayside area, before cramming ourselves into Eileen’s car. It was a tight fit for the four of us and what luggage was brought.
At least I’d brought Andre’s scarf inside the night before. I figured Eileen wasn’t much in the mood for questions while playing taxi driver for the rest of the family.
Of course, who should be waiting for us at Eileen’s, but Jacob and Olivia, both of whom appeared just as exhausted. We all tumbled out of the car, eager to greet the unexpected arrivals.
The rest of my time in New Zealand passed in something of a blur. We spent Saturday exploring some, mainly around Auckland, and even managing to find spots that Eileen hadn’t seen yet. Mum even managed to drag us all out on a grocery run with only minor complaints.
Easter was peaceful enough, in that, no one was outright demanding that I go. Jacob, Eileen and I all went out for a quiet breakfast instead, before finding a lone bookstore daring to be open. I would’ve liked a little extra sleep, but enjoyed the company of my siblings none the less.
Mum, dad and Elliott were all back by the time we got back to Eileen’s. Mum was in the kitchen, as was dad, bouncing between the countertops, the oven and the stove. Olivia also hovered at the edge of the kitchen, tossing a salad of some kind.
While me and Eileen had decided on a ham earlier in the week, mum had grabbed a cut of lamb during the family run on the grocery store.
Monday was far more chaotic.
Having noted that I intended to leave in the afternoon, the ministry had dispatched an owl with a reminder. Nice as you will, merely asking to not overstay too long.
I think I burned it, not before groaning and texting Charlie to expect me in the next few hours. Mum packed me a bag of leftovers, mainly the lamb and a fruit salad she’d put together, which I put in my bag.
There were rounds of “see you laters” and hugs, before Elliott appariated us down to Wellington. He was leaving later in the day, only needing to get back before Tuesday morning in Britain. He’d also frequently visited the New Zealand ministry while hiding out here.
I turned my phone off before entering the ministry, not needing it to go dead while using the portkey again. Following Elliott, I gaped at the visitor’s entrance. It looked almost like a futuristic tube station.
Completing the wand check, we passed through security and headed down to the international portkey arrivals and departures area.
Checking out, I headed over to the open area. Shoving the beach ball into the box, I pulled out the other object: an empty flour bag. Grabbing my things, I waved one last time.
“la Roumanie,” I muttered, and with a sharp tug, I was off.

Weekly Dose of Mark
Saturday, April 15, 2023• 04/15/23
I sent out a Comic Critic email for the first time in months. I’ve realized I’ve fallen out of the habit of drawing comics daily, and I think I should get back into it. Before, I got more done. Well, at least I got a couple of comics drawn at the end of the week. The movie review was on “Zardoz.” Jane H. wrote about how that film temporarily stopped her lusting for Sean Connery. I’m paraphrasing.
I spent Monday morning and later evening in Downtown Tacoma. In the morning, I went to Freelance Fandango, where I met with Corey, Stan, Nori, and Haley. Corey brought prints for the binder, and Stan brought a Warlock compilation for show and tell. He also got a How to Think When You Draw book for Haley to check out. I brought in Shannon Wheeler’s Too Much Coffee Man compilation. Nori showed us bird photos he’s been taking with his telescopic lens. He would have been out on his kayak or taking more pictures, but it was raining today. This week, the KitKat flavor was Gato Chocolate, a chocolate mouse cake with a hint of strawberry flavor. We compared them to the American flavored Strawberry and Dark Chocolate. The Japanese flavor was once again superior. The Sisters of Pythias held a Ham dinner as a fundraiser in the evening. It was much better than the last Ham dinner they did. I think they took the feedback they overheard and applied it. Krista doesn’t like ham, so it was a treat for me. I went back for seconds. Oddly, small KitKats left over from someone’s Easter celebration were desert.
On Tuesday, I left the house at 6:40 am to drive to Seattle Central College to give a presentation titled “Cartooning as Labor.” I’d been invited by Leonard, who knew me from the Graphic Artists Guild. He teaches cartooning. I drove by five car accidents but did manage to arrive at 8am, in time for Leonard to take me to breakfast, where I had Bacon and Egg Tortillas with hashbrowns. I think the students got something out of it; some of them were interested in making cartoons. Others were taking the class for credit. A walkout was scheduled at 10 o’clock, so I left as the building emptied. When I got home, I made sure that Krista and I went for a walk before lunch. I ate a very light lunch.
My Uncle Bill, the twin to my father Jake, will be moving from New Mexico to Washington State next month. He’s moving to be closer to his family. Two of his daughters live in the Puget Sound area. I look forward to seeing more of him.
Speaking of my father, Jake, he and my mother are visiting my brother Stan and his wife, Nancy, in Hawaii. From the photos, he is texting the siblings; they are having fun at the beach.
I got an exciting email from the city of Tacoma. It reads:
Greetings and congratulations, Mark!
You have been selected to create a Traffic Box Wrap design for the City of Tacoma! We received 126 applications, and you are one of 17 artists selected, as a cohort representing a diversity of styles and perspectives, based on the quality exemplified in your past work. Rebecca Solverson will be reaching out to you soon to set up an orientation focused on the technical requirements and assistance in understanding the project and specifications for wrap designs.
We greatly appreciate the time and effort you put into this submission. In addition to this opportunity, we may reach out to you to create one-off, site-specific wrap designs based on the information you provided about parts of Tacoma you feel especially connected with.
Thank you and let us know if you have any questions!
BK LeMay
I’m very stoked by this news. I’ve wanted to do a Traffic Box Wrap since the city started the program. I’ve applied before but didn’t make the cut. Then there was the pandemic, and then funding was an issue. I had my fingers crossed when I applied. I have an idea of what I’m going to do. It will be something that will be whimsical as people drive by, admired when they are stopped, and enthralled when they find hidden elements on close inspection. It’s going to be groovy!
Alley News
Every trip to Costco has included buying a couple of bags of dirt for the garden. We also picked up some Chicken Manure, which works very well but stinks to high heaven until you get it in the ground. And some would argue even then, there’s a smell. But the vegetables love it. Krista is worried she’s not getting the peas in early enough.
Pat Smith and I spent three hours at Wapato Park on Saturday because there was a Pokemon special event he wanted to take advantage of. I was all for this. The whole goal was to catch as many of one type of Pokemon as possible. So the last week, we’ve been gathering game elements to assist this goal. We plugged in lure modules, lure incense, and lucky eggs for extra points and enjoyed the outdoors. There was less walking than planned. We sat under the protection of roof-covered picnic areas because it was raining part of the time. Why would I do this? Besides my neighbor’s company, I’ve been stuck at level 40 for nearly two years because one of the tasks to get to level 41 was to catch 200 Pokemon in one day. And it never seemed like I had a good enough excuse to blow an afternoon in the park catching Pokemon, at least not on my own. It is with a happy heart that I can announce that I’m finally at Level 41, whatever non-accomplishment that is. It was a fun way to pass the time. But it might be a while before I do that again. If it wasn’t raining, I’m sure Krista would have preferred I mowed the yard and garden. She’s started to drop hints in that direction.
This week’s dreams:
 April 8
#IDreamt I was flying to a reunion, but the plane was forced to land due to snow storms. All flights to the destination or out of the airport were then canceled. Discovered Arthur Ross Jr. was stranded with me at Cincinnati Airport.
April 9
#IDreamt Tacoma became an area of study as our dimension would partially phase with a similar dimension. In the other dimension, my friends had a toddler. So they would find ‘their’ kid popping in and out of their lives at odd times.
April 10
#IDreamt my sister was in charge of a cruise liner’s entertainment. One of her performers for a dinner mystery was AWOL, so she asked me to fill in as an aging, poorly skilled drag queen.
April 11
#IDreamt I was working at a summer camp. The washers and dryers were caked with years of dirt and grime, so I was giving them a scrub.
April 12
#IDreamt Lani Lawrence was helping me buy property in the afterlife. Turns out that burning things like money did arrive for you. She had lots. Newcomer got a discount on land, so we were working on a deal.
April 13
#IDreamt I drew a t-shirt design for a band back in the ’80s that became famous and a pop culture icon. More than half of my income came from its licensing. It’s a shame that I woke up without fame or fortune.
April 14
#IDreamt I lived on the road. I was placing my aged orange cat on a sofa in a strange house to sleep while I rearranged the contents of the back seat of our vehicle.
April 15
#IDreamt four dreams last night. Each is in a different county with different people. All of them were jailbreaks.
I watched some movies this week:
 35. April 8
The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot (2018) Rating: 8
When it comes to movies that have both Hitler and Bigfoot in them, this one is at the top . You might expect a film with such a cheezy title to be poorly produced, lacking in talent, and have poorly constructed dialog. But this film dismisses all those expectations. It’s played straight and honestly, just like the main character. The entire movie is all about a person’s character. Plus, if you are a Sam Elliott fan, as I am, you will find it a delightful film to watch. Plus, I give it an extra point for having a dog with a name in it. I watched this movie on Tubi.
36. April 9
Apollo 18 (2011) Rating: 6
I’m not a big fan of found-footage horror films. But I found myself drawn into this festival of shake-shots because it’s set on the moon. After viewing the movie, I found myself thinking of the cold war hysteria science fiction films of the ’50s. I love those old films. I believe that the undercurrent of nostalgia, along with my interest in space exploration, is what drew me to this movie. I watched this movie on Tubi.
37. April 15
Demolition (2015) Rating: 8
This drama involves a unique perspective of how a person has to excavate out of their numbness induced by denial, loss, and grief. What makes this well-sculpted film from a seven to an eight is the songs that are carefully selected for the soundtrack. The songs which aren’t familiar, you are left craving to explore. That sense of desire for exploration reflects the similar personal struggles of the characters in the film in a way that is genius in its subtlety. I watched this movie on a Netflix DVD.
38. April 15
Cocaine Bear (2023) Rating: 7
I’m giving this move an extra point on a title that became a pop-culture hit overnight. It also gets an extra point for having a dog with a name. I don’t think anyone expected this to be Ray Liotta’s final film. Mr. Liotta died in his sleep from a heart attack filming Dangerous Waters in the Dominican Republic. His death scene in this movie was gut-wrenching, and I would give an extra point for it, but it might be considered in bad taste. I watched this with Krista on Peacock. Well, I watched it. Krista gave up on it and busied herself with a game on her iPad.
More next week,
Mark

10 How’s
How did you get one of your scars? I fractured my skull when I was eleven and fell off the monkey bars.
How did you celebrate your last birthday? I didn’t do much as it was snowing really badly and most of the roads were closed lol. I had a couple of cat visits to do and we got a takeaway too.
How are you feeling at this moment? Pretty good. I’m kinda hungry though.
How did your night go last night? I had a really bad headache but it was actually okay. I didn’t do much though.
How did you do in high school? I got decent grades and I did fine academically but I didn’t really enjoy my time there and I definitely struggled socially.
How did you get the shirt you’re wearing? Next.
How often do you see your best friend? Mike and I live together, so we see each other everyday unless I’m away for work or he’s on a camping trip.
How much money did you spend last month? Uh, I have no idea. Let’s see - £300 on household bills, probably £150 on the animals, £100 on Archie’s vet bills, another £100 on my personal bills, £140 on riding lessons and probably another £150 on random bits and pieces.
How old do you want to be when you get married? I got married when I was 29.
How old will you be at your next birthday? I’ll be 35 in December.
9 What’s
What is the most important part of your life? I couldn’t pick just one thing - overall though, my marriage, my business, my animals and my family.
What did you do last weekend? Last weekend was a long weekend, so on the Friday I had a lazy day at home while Mike took the dog out for a walk. On Saturday, we both took the dog together and then chilled in the garden and watched TV in the evening. I had my beach ride on Easter Sunday and I was too sore to do much after that, and on Monday I had another chilled out day at home as I was even more achy lol.
What did you last cry over? I can’t remember the last time I cried.
What are you worried about? I’m not worried about anything at the moment.
What is your mother’s name? Alice.
What always makes you feel better when you’re upset? Taking a nap.
What would you rather be doing? I’m happy doing this as the weather is absolutely foul lol.
What’s the most important thing you look for in a significant other? A good sense of humour, a decent moral compass and a sense of integrity.
What did you have for breakfast? Two crumpets with butter and vegemite, a glass of apple juice and a coffee.
EIGHT Have You’s
Have you ever done something outrageously dumb? Oh how come, who hasn’t?
Have you ever had sex on the beach? Yes.
Have you ever been backstabbed by a friend? Sure, that’s life.
Have you ever been out of the country? Yeah, I was lucky enough to travel a lot when I was younger.
Have you ever dated someone younger than you? Yeah, a few times.
Have you ever liked someone who already had somebody? Sure.
Have you ever been brokenhearted? Yeah.
Have you ever read an entire book in one day? I’ve read multiple books in the same day lol. I read a LOT when I was younger, but getting the internet kind of killed that for me.
SEVEN Who’s:
Who is the last person you saw? The Tesco delivery driver lol.
Who is the last person that you texted? I haven’t text anyone today, but I messaged Jane yesterday.
Who called you last? An unknown number that turned out to be spam when I googled it.
Who is the last person you hung out with? Mike. Who did you hug last? Mike.
Who is the last person that texted you? Jane.
Who was the last person you said “I love you” to? Mike.
SIX Where’s:
Where does your best friend live? We live together.
Where is your favorite place to be? At home with my favourite people, riding down the beach or on a nice, sunny dog walk.
Where did you sleep last night? In my bed.
Where did you last hang out? At home, lol. I’m really not a sociable person in any respect haha.
Where do/did you go to school? Yeah, I’m not putting that on here.
Where did you last adventure to? I had a lovely walk around the woods with Archie yesterday - not really an adventure as I’ve done that walk loads of times but it was such lovely weather and we had a really nice time.
FIVE Do’s/Does:
Do you ever wish you were someone else? No.
Do you think anyone despises you? I mean, if they do, then good for them, I guess?
Do you like someone right now? Yes.
Does the future scare you? No. I don’t really think about the future too much, though.
Do you have any secret powers? Well, no lol.
FOUR Why’s:
Why are you best friends with your best friend(s)? We just click, I suppose.
Why did your parents give you the name you have? They agreed that if I was a girl, my dad would pick my name, and I guess he just picked a name that he liked. It was quite common for that time, though.
Why did you get a myspace? Because all my friends had one, I guess.
Why are you doing this survey? Because I haven’t taken one like this for months and I quite like them. I’m sure I’ve taken this survey about ten times over the years lol.
THREE If’s:
If you could have one super power what would it be? The ability to always have the money I need.
If you could go back in time and change one thing, would you? No.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Sweden appeals to me quite a lot, or Canada.
Two Would-you-ever’s:
Would you ever shave your head to save someone you love? How would that save anyone’s life?
Would you ever get back together with any of your exes if they asked you? No.
Last one:
Are you happy with how your life has turned out? Yes, very happy, though I never imagined my life would end up like this.

I'm feeling grumpy and mopey this weekend. Had a long work week and I feel like I havent been able to catch up on sleep. I also have only been able to go to the gym once this week.
we did accidentally end up going out for St Patricks day to a local brewery but it was for a required husband work thing rather than us actively going out.
havent been up to doing much art. I sketched a little bit and thats about all.
we ordered a new bed a few weeks ago and ofcourse it got lost in the mail. Ever so conveniently, they managed to find it but they have to deliver it tomorrow which is a monday and both me and the spouse are supposed to work. So I had to call in sick so that I can receive said missing bed. Right now I'm waiting for one round of laundry to finish so I can start another. Trying to clean up the house in preparation for the delivery guys. Cleaning everything and trying to make room. Our current bed is going in the spare bedroom so I'm cleaning both rooms and pushing furniture around.
I was going to learn how to use the lawnmower this weekend but they keep warning us of freezing rains. I'm not sure if I'm actually growing grass but the weeds do look a lot greener and overgrown since I started watering them.
still need to go grocery shopping. I'm still having an issue with a boring bank ordeal that I can't get in contact with anybody so while I called out of work tomorrow, I schedule a bank appointment instead. I also keep forgetting time isn't as far away as I thought it was an our military ball is only in a couple weeks and I haven't schedule a hair appointment..which is my fault...I keep scheduling to work instead and hair salons are always open on days when I'm working.
Husbands getting deployed in a few months and will be gone for a year so he's trying to schedule some weekend excursions and a vacation for us and that's always a different kind of stressful. We are 6-7 hrs from his family now so he wants to go home for Easter because he's never been with his family on Easter before. His sister is turning 21 and they planned a family weekend trip to Vegas which we are trying to catch. They're only 3 hours from vegas..we are like 12..I'd actually like to go to Vegas. I've only been once when I was like 17. I don't want to gamble I just want to eat and look. And then my spouse gets a week of vacation before he leaves so we were trying to decide if we wanted to book a cruise or visit super mario land at universal...or what..but all of this combined is quite expensive so..
anyway, my hobbies keep getting pushed backwards for adult things. I'd like to have a day where I can say I have nothing to do.

EDITOR:  Wonderful news to report:  Pat’s Cash and Carry will reopen on Tuesday, March 21. They plan to open Tuesday-Saturday from 11am-4pm.  I was so excited to get this wonderful news.  Karen’s daughters will resume the duties to continue to serve our community. “Pat’s” has been a community gathering place throughout my whole life.  As a little girl in the 1960s, I remember going down there for crickets to go fishing, an ice cream cone, or a can of kerosene for a heater.  “Pat’s” was a vital part of existence then, and still is now.  “Pat’s” is like going home for a visit.  It was back then, and it surely is now.  Go visit the girls as they carry the torch of their mother, into another generation, for your family, and for theirs.  We miss Karen dearly. But, I know her sweet spirit will be felt and that she is smiling down from her new home in heaven, proud of her girls.  LRMartin

What an opportunity! Rosa Free Mobile Health Services
A next door neighbor Nellie announced that she was going to have her eyes checked up at Eagles Nest Arts Center.   My response, " Nellie, you are wasting your time!  Those free services are only for homeless people.  Hardworking middle class people like you and me-- we have to make appointments and drive to Seneca or Anderson and pay big bucks!"           "No!" declared Nellie. "Call 882-4664 to learn all about the services soon to be available for us.  In fact, a $400,000 bus is coming soon to offer free mammography, just like you get in the hospital.   VERY IMPORTANT:  Please take advantage of these new services!  If T/S people don't show up, then the visiting Health Services will go elsewhere. Here are some of the services offered: Vision testing, Mammography, Screenings for: blood pressure, cholesterol. diabetes, hemoglobin, and hearing.  Now you know Miz Jeannie refers to herself as "the little Scottish girl." Ashton Recalls by Ashton Hester
Here is the second installment of the DAR School memoir:                                  DAR SCHOOL STUDENT FROM 1942-1946 RECALLS EXPERIENCES - (Second Installment). . .Soon after we arrived we were sent to the infirmary to get shots and be tested to see if we had TB. This was done by Dr. Boggs of Greenville and the school nurse who we called Mother Frazier. They were also supposed to draw a vial of blood for other tests, but when they tried to draw my blood they couldn't get any. They tried several times but finally gave up. When Mother Frazier would see me going across the campus she would say, "There goes the girl who hasn't got a drop of blood". . .The first time we went to the dining room to eat, I was about to sit at the first table I came to, but an older girl told me, "You can't sit here, it's reserved." I didn't know what "reserved" meant, and I began to cry. Then this real nice girl told me, "Come here, honey, you can sit at my table." I was so thankful for her. . .That night I became real homesick, and I wrote Mama a letter saying I wanted to return home and asking her to come get me. She wrote back saying I had to stay, because if I left, Mrs. Kirksey would be so disappointed. So I toughed it out and soon got over being homesick. . .All the students called Mr. and Mrs. Cain "Daddy Ralph" and "Mama Lillian." They became our adopted parents. . .Maggie and I were given jobs to do, since the school was allowing us to work instead of having to pay tuition. . .My first job was making uniforms for the students. The uniforms we wore through the week were of medium blue Indian head material, but the Sunday ones were of Navy blue gabardine. We wore them with a white collar. . .I thoroughly enjoyed making uniforms because I had always wanted to sew, but Mama was afraid I would break her sewing machine needle. They were hard to replace during the war. . CONTINUED NEXT WEEK.

Happy First Day of Spring! It reminds me of my favorite childhood book by Margaret Wise Brown “Home for a Bunny.”  …….Spring Spring Spring sang the robins, Spring Spring Spring sang the frogs….the leaves burst out, the flowers burst out, and robins burst out of their eggs….it was Spring……
Prayer: Thank you Lord, for new beginnings, and your constant love that surrounds us.  Amen
Happy Spring! Stay warm! LRM

Hi, it’s probably not that related to ML, but could you tell us something about French Easter traditions? Is it true that there’s no Easter bunny and instead there are chocolate bells?
Hi!
Yes, indeed, no Easter Bunny here (except close to the German border)!
🐣 Easter is like Christmas in France, in that it has been heavily secularised over the years. Very few children will not be visited by the Cloches de Pâques, i.e. the Easter Bells: they bring chocolate eggs, hens, lambs, fish, bells, chicks, bunnies, coins, etc.! You can find the chocolates everywhere in shops, bakeries, etc. (when we say everywhere, it's literally everywhere. you can't escape the chocolate).
🐣 Easter Monday is a bank holiday, which is pretty nice since the weather tends to be sunny. It's generally an occasion for families to get together!
🐣 The weekend involves a traditional egghunt, la chasse aux oeufs: parents/grandparents hide eggs (generally chocolate or sugar, but they can be painted hardboiled or emptied eggs as well), in a garden if possible, or even in an apartment, while the kids are occupied. Then someone rings a bell and/or announces "les cloches sont passées!" (the bells have come!), and the hunt can start! Some towns (or arrondissements in Paris) will even organise a giant hunt during the weekend.
🐣 A traditional meal around then is lamb. And of course all of the chocolate and sweets collected!
Hope it helps!

Plenty of Easter fun was had by all. Pep enjoyed his first egg hunt, organized by my mom in her backyard, and bless her, the eggs were filled with jelly beans and loose change. Oh, the choking hazards. But with close supervision he had a ton of fun and actually understood the concept of looking for the eggs and then putting them in a basket. So cute!
My dad took him for a few rides on his riding lawn mower which obviously was AWESOME from a 1yo perspective. My parents also just recently got 18 baby chicks and for a baby just learning about and loving animals, that was super cool too. We enjoyed lots of time outside visiting with family, kicking around a soccer ball, and we ate plenty too. Turns out pep likes deviled eggs? What won’t this kiddo eat?!
What else? I’ve recently moved into a new position at work — finally, it feels like, and I’ve been loving it so far. It’s been a long time coming but I’ve finally moved out of the team I had been working with, a team which is very micromanaged and filled with people who refuse to take personal responsibility for just about anything. Clearly, not a fit for me, and I’m glad the big boss agreed. I’ve moved to a role focusing more on corporate regulation, and it’s one where I can manage myself and my own time, it’s much more project-based, and much more of an advisory “big picture” role. Lots to learn, but I’m digging in and enjoying it. It also surprised me that I was able to move into this position with basically two more months of work til my 6-month parental leave. Love that journey for me.
Pep had his 15-month well visit on Monday and he’s “perfect”, their words, not mine. 😁 26 lbs and a whopping 34”, still clocking in at 97th percentile for height. So tall!
B and I have been planning his mom’s 60th birthday bash which will be in a few weeks and it’s actually been pretty fun to coordinate everything. We decided to do it up — outdoor with tent and seating, catered food, balloons and decorations, cake, music.. all that good stuff. The baby blue dress I’m wearing in one of those pictures is the dress I bought to wear to her party.. had to get something nicer, because my usual outfit of leggings and too-small-tshirt probably won’t cut it.
Otherwise just chugging along over here! Enjoying the spring weather as it slowly arrives and getting outside as much as we can. Still juggling lots of tiredness and an achy body, but at 31 weeks large, what do I expect? Pretty soon pep’s baby brother will be here. Trying not to get too overwhelmed by that — doing some prep to get ready as much as we can and trusting we’ll manage the rest as it comes.
