Ok but Résistance?? With a capital R??

Quick backgrounder on French history to contextualise this:

During the WW2, when France got invaded by Nazi Germany, simply put, the state collaborated with the invaders and established the Vichy government loyal to Nazi Germany.

The French patriots responded by establishing a clandestine resistance movement, la Résistance, which would employ guerrilla tactics to make the invasion as hard as possible to the Germans.

La Résistance has a tremendous importance in French cultural identity. And Miraculous picking up on that is amazing. They even call each other "comrade" i can't even djdjshshd

Now, the tactics employed by the Résistance weren't so pretty all the time - after all, they were basically a guerrilla. Innocent people would occasionally get harmed by the Résistance's activities. Of course, to the Résistance fighters, that was a price that had to be paid to be liberated from tyranny. See: Alya opposes to Nino's plan of getting someone akumatised so that they can discover how the Monarch transfers Miraculous powers to his victims. She says that it is cruel to put an innocent person in distress, while both Nino, Marinette, and Adrien agree that in the great scheme of things, the plan could help LB & CN. They also have the added justification that Ladybug's powers would undo all the harm, but is it moral to make someone suffer even if you'd heal them just thereafter? So imo probably for the first time, we see LB & CN sliding from the white to the grayer side.

Another thing about the Résistance: since it was a clandestine movement, there was A LOT going on in terms of intelligence and counter-intelligence. The Résistance had members inside the government who would give them important information like German logistic movements (not unlike Adrien recording his dad's akumatisation), and there would be people within the Résistance who would betray the cause, or even dangles, aka people specifically joining the Résistance to spy on them and report to the Germans (just like Lila does), and even at times feed them false information (we'll maybe see that happen?..). The way Lila talks to Gabriel without looking at him and the way Gabriel denies the information (because that would be useful only to Monarch and he obviously isn't) is so spy aesthetic and I DIG IT.

With all the secrets and secret identity schenanigans, I've been DYING to see some infiltration and double-crossing in Miraculous. In fact, it is where I am going with my WIP Miraculous Fanscripts. I also forever had this idea of writing a Résistance AU where Gabriel is collaborating with the Germans and Adrien is secretly in the Résistance and Marinette is also in the Résistance and... I'm rambling.

But yeah, just to mention also how I previously pointed out that in the later episodes, we start seeing some antagonism against LB & CN, and how the political wind may turn against them later in this season. And Marinette and Adrien and their closest friends being part of the Resistance movement would fit extremely well in that setting. Just sayin 👀

Hi, I'm wondering if there's an equivalent to Chinatown in France and if it is possible for characters to travel there on foot or bike from either the school or from Marinette's bakery/house

And does that area celebrate the Lunar New Years, Lantern Festival and other generally non-Western Celebrations?

And are students allowed to get time off from school to celebrate non-Western holidays?

There is indeed an equivalent to Chinatown right in Paris, in the 13th arrondissement. Its other name is "le quartier chinois" (Chinese neighborhood)! You can find the most specialised Asian markets and shops there, like the famous Tang Frères, and it has Asian-inspired architecture. Shop names are at least in Chinese!

It would definitely be possible for the characters to walk, bike, or even take public transport to get there (it would respectively take ~45min, ~20, and ~25 minutes, if we take the real location of the Place des Vosges, so the Park that's next to Marinette's and the school, as a starting point).

The biggest Lunar New Year and Lantern Festival celebrations in Paris are held there. Students would not have time off to celebrate these holidays, but they could probably catch the parades after a day of class! There are also some Lunar New Year parades held closer to where the show is set, in the 4th arrondissement, which would be quicker to get to for them.

Sorry I'm answering late but that's mostly because I kinda suck at finding French songs that make me think of the lovesquare 🫣 either I don't listen to enough French music or the ones I currently listen to don't quite give me lovesquare vibes?

But I can maybe recommend "Amour toujours" from Clara Luciani, the overall lyrics don't exactly have Ladynoir vibes though (because it's more questioning and talking about temporary love) but she sings a few times "à la folie, passionnément, un peu beaucoup, pas du tout" in the song and it reminds me of Chat Noir taking off roses petals in Glaciator while waiting for Ladybug and saying exactly that 😅 but yeah I wouldn't say "this is a ladynoir song talking about their strong love and partnership" at all

If anyone has French songs recommendations with ladynoir vibes that my brain forgot or don't know about I'm all ears 👀👂

My friends you'll be horrified happy to know that the fact Black Cat!Marinette was called Ladynoire and not Chatte Noire isn't necessarily for PG reasons, it might just be for copyright reasons because of Marvel's Black Cat (in Spiderman comics), whose French name is... Chatte Noire.

Goes to show what happens when things get lost in translation. For a series that's set in Paris, France and this is one of the things they choose not to adapt because I guess they think the French school system would be too confusing? Anyways I would prefer to see them all move on simply to get Marinette away from certain people in the class that don't serve her well. In that, too, there's also the stupidity of "Adrien and Marinette are high school sweethearts!!!1!" and that's cliched all to hell.

Localizations, in my opinion, are quite a touchy subject. There's a struggle between trying to communicate the message between languages but also making it understandable for your audience. So it's safe to assume that's why they went with changing it from the French school system to the American school system. It's just unfortunate that the timeline of the show is basically non-existent so these kids are just perpetually stuck in their last year of collège. (would've been cool if they kept it in the english dub as the french school system though; neat little learning experience for kids)

I also wish they did move on to a new year of school. We'd get some new characters to interact with or background characters become sort of ascended extras (like let's say Aurore and Mireille end up as Marinette's classmates). Also a little funny side thought, but had the cast moved on to lycee, it would likely be a better place to introduce Luka, like maybe he'd be someone from a different class or a year above but ya know he'd still be there. (so more Lukanette interactions woo 🥳)

First Impression: Love is Panacea

I have just finished the first 4 episodes of the drama on Youkou. It took me over an hour to get the app to take my money, so this better be worth it.

The drama is project for Literature and Art of the Sichuan province and co-produced by Youkou and CCPTV. Therefore, we can expect a lot of national propaganda in the show, especially since it’s not only a medical drama, but also about international medical aid and foreign aid. Lou Yunxi seems to really take his nickname as Sichuan ambassador seriously! ;-)

Cast and Characters (so far)

Zhang Rua Nan as Su Weian: A medical school dropout on a quest to enjoy her life, struggling to make ends meet overseas. She becomes a translator at the local Chinese Medical Aid hospital.

Luo Yunxi as Dr. Gu Yun Zheng: A passionate but cold doctor working in Chinese Medical relief/aid in North Africa. He is Su Weian former teacher. He is initially very skeptical of the FL intentions and abilities.

Wang Yiting as Jiang Muying: Su Weian’s best friend, that travels to see her after a long time.

Li Jiahao as Fang Mingfan (Nian Baiyu!) doctor and assistant and love interest of Jiang Muying. I expect them to be the 3rd couple of the show.

Shawn Wei as Dun Yuncheng: As the CEO of a pharmaceutical company. He had a one-sided crush on the FL and is the half brother of the ML. We haven’t seen them interact in the present yet, but there is a nice build up to an interesting dynamic.

Mild Spoiler

The first arc of the show takes place in a small city in North Africa. Foreign actors in Chinese Dramas are always … something, and this is no difference. The dubbing is also noticeable different compared to the rest. I do, however, like how the show approaches different languages and the language barrier. Dr. Gu only speaks Chinese and English and needs a French translator to communicate with patients and staff – this is where Su Weian comes in.

There is a lot of unintended comedy, because of the way they are depicting the foreign country. While some is just silly – for example the way they are throwing $ bills around as if it was Yuan, other times it relies too much on exoticism. So far, they haven’t crossed the line to straight out racist stereotyping, so that’s something. It does, at times, make a lot of the scenes feel over the top and cringe. However, no matter the country of origin, very rarely do productions get other languages and culture right. China in Western media is often just horrible, so I’m not going to hold it against them. The medical stuff is also mostly fine, it’s not accurate, but it’s not so wrong, that I’m getting angry. So the framing of the show is okay, I think it will get better once they are back in China.

Dr. Gu is a typical character played by Luo Yunxi: Serious, passionate, troubled and very in love with a woman. He excels in this role, as always. His English is also amazing! Su Weian is so far the more interesting character. She is everything I want from a FL: strong, independent, witty and smart. So far, we were only introduced to 3 side characters, that have not shown any depth yet. I’m just really happy to see Tantai Jin and Nian Baiyun reunite on screen – still being master and assistant. I do miss their costume so, because the styling in this show is… different.

The cast of the show is so far the best part. While the script relies on a lot of cliché tropes, it’s the dynamic between the actors, that make the show engaging. I’m rather pessimistic about the script so far, it might end somewhere between “Lie to Love” and “Broker”. However, the acting and the chemistry between the leads is significantly better!

One of my favorite things is, how self-aware the show is at times: Be it the supporting cast admitting being the side characters of the leads' life, the subverting of stereotypes of Chinese eating strange things like insects or the nurses watching costume dramas on the Youkou apps and taking dating advice from it. So I’m holding out hope that the overly cliché romantic tropes are an attempt to mislead the audience into thinking this is just a romantic show.

I’m going to talk about the ending of the show next. Please just stop reading here, if you don’t want to get spoiled!

Major Spoiler

On a personal note, I was misdiagnosed with a deadly disease earlier this year. While I’m incredibly lucky, that it turned out a misdiagnosis, for a couple of months I had to live with the belief that I was going to die early and in a lot of pain. So this show hits on a different level and that's why it’s important to me, that the novel ending stays the same. (Spoiler!!)

I’m a bit nervous about it, because not only did they cut out 6 full episodes, they also changed the name to “Healing Lover”. I don’t want the FL to be healed. There is no cure for her disease in real life, so there shouldn’t be one in the drama. Suffering from life altering disease is part of many people's life, that affect not only them, but also their family and friends. It would feel insulting, if they change it. I want to see a drama, in which the cast has to come to terms with the FL death. I want her husband and son to find a way to cope and live on. I want maximum angst. No rainbow at night.

The fact that some ml fans are acting like salters just don't understand what La Bise is when they critique the "comedy" scene in Multiplication gives me such a headache.

They most certainly know that the cheek kiss is considered a perfectly friendly gesture in France; it's a well-known aspect of French culture. Even if they didn't, the show itself has used La Bise at least twice, most notably with Chloe and Marinette. They would have learned by then.

While La Bise in-of-itself is perfectly friendly, it is clear in the scene that Adrien intends it to be flirty, or at least sweet and romantic. Notice how he doesn't greet Nino or Alya with La Bise, just Marinette, his new person of interest. It's romantic in nature to him, meaning he is trying to kiss her romantically without her consent.

Even if it was perfectly friendly on his part, that still doesn't mean he should have done it. Think of it this way: if you walked up to a friend and attempted to hug them, and their immediate reaction was to back up away from you, looking distressed, would you try to keep hugging them? Or would you stop and ask what's wrong? Furthermore, if you attempted to hug them, and your mutual friend pinned your friend's arms down so that they could not get away from you, would you not find that weird?

The point is, the writers did a bad job of writing this scene.

It's not funny or cute that Marinette was kept still while someone tried to touch her without her consent, it's weird. It's not a good sign if a love interest can't understand that their crush is upset by what they're doing.

There are other ways to write comedy that don't involve making the MC deeply uncomfortable with their love interest's actions.

yes, Charlie being a foreigner is huge in the game because he'll bring up chinese culture he's not used to (his second battle pass date when you head to the north), he'll talk about chinese idioms he learned, and sometimes he mixes english and chinese in his sentences.

Evan knows czech, latin, english, and chinese.

Osborn knows english, some spanish, and chinese.

Jesse knows french, spanish, english, and chinese.

Sariel knows english, japanese, chinese, and maybe italian. he can also commune with plants, haha.

Charlie knows bird, english, chinese, italian, and if you consider him saying "thank you" in other languages as knowing them then he's spoken in french, spanish, arabic, and russian.

I don't know for sure if this was the point he was trying to make but. While I acknowledge that someone from France, especially someone from Paris specifically, would be able to write much more subtle nuance to be accurate to the culture

1.) ML has fans all over the world. You're really gonna ban that much of the population from writing?

2.) Futhermore, as I implied above, the culture between areas of the same country can differ. I assume France has less difference than, say, America. But if we're discussing regional differences and nuance, than culture in Paris will be a bit different than say, Lyon or Toulouse despite all being French.

3.) If buddy boy wants to talk about how only people from that area/culture can write about that area/culture, then I have some BIG news for him about how much his show takes from Chinese culture!

I'm sure there's more, but you get the idea. A multifaceted character with a collection of experiences that seem disparate isn't different from what we are IRL when we break ourselves down into a list like this. In addition to all the positives, I'm also old (35), neurodivergent and mentally-Ill.

So yeah, not a "Mary Sue."

RECIPE: Pollo in Guajillo (from Asada by Bricia Lopez and Javier Cabral)

This grilled chicken has gotten me through so many long days working at Guelaguetza. There were times when I ate it for lunch every day, sometimes with a big salad, sometimes with homestyle french fries, or with rice, beans, and tortillas. It tastes great any way you eat it and it reheats beautifully. This is a solid recipe to make on a Sunday and eat throughout the week. I purposely did not soak the chiles, in order to create a rustic marinade that has more texture; the flavor of burnt chile once it is grilled makes this chicken recipe stand out.

Serves 4

12 guajillo chiles (1¾ ounces/50 g), stems and seeds removed

½ large white onion (5. ounces/150 g), roughly chopped

8 cloves garlic, peeled

¼ teaspoon black peppercorns (about 12 peppercorns)

1 whole clove

1 tablespoon dried Mexican oregano

2 tablespoons grapeseed oil

¼ cup (60 ml) orange juice

2 tablespoons seasoned rice vinegar

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

1½ tablespoons sea salt

2 pounds (910 g) bone-in chicken thighs

In a cast-iron skillet over medium heat, lightly toast the chiles, about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

In the same skillet, add the onion and garlic, turning once or twice until they are lightly charred, about 10 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Add the peppercorns, clove, and dried oregano to the pan and lightly toast until they are aromatic, about 2 minutes. Transfer the toasted spices and oregano to a molcajete or spice grinder and grind until finely ground.

In a high-performance blender or food processor, add the toasted chiles, onion, garlic, ground spices and oregano, oil, orange juice, rice vinegar, lime juice, cinnamon, and salt. Blend until most of the chiles have come apart.

Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Using a gallon-size resealable bag, add the marinade and the chicken. Seal and let sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or overnight.

Remove the chicken thighs in their marinade from the fridge to allow them to reach room temperature before grilling.

Start a charcoal or gas grill. The gas should be set to high. If using a pellet grill, preheat your grill to 450°F (230°C) for at least 15 minutes. If using charcoal, the coals should be red but entirely covered with gray ash.

Remove the chicken from the marinade and put them on the grill directly over the medium fire, skin side up. Close the lid and cook, turning once, about 15 minutes on each side. The chicken is cooked when its internal temperature reaches 175°F (79°C) on a meat thermometer. Transfer the meat to a cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes.

what are some uniquely french christmas traditions?

We made a post last year with some French traditions for Christmas and New Year's, which you can find here!

A lot of the traditions are kind of shared with neighbouring countries, like the Christmas markets, which are also traditional in Germany for instance, or Advent Calendars which are a very popular tradition (there are some for everyone, with chocolates, teas, toys e.g. Playmobil/Lego, and even a few ML ones!) but there are some things that are fairly unique to us like:

🎄 Drinking champagne on Christmas Eve: just because, champagne being French, it's a tradition that originated here 😉

🎄 The Réveillon de Noël = Christmas Eve dinner: it's a moment where families will gather before exchanging presents (either after dinner on the 24th, or on the morning of the 25th). It generally involves oysters and other shellfish, smoked salmon/trout and foie gras (goose liver) as starters, and a stuffed pintade (guineafowl) as the main course, and for dessert...

🎄 The bûche de Noël: it's the traditional dessert for Christmas. It's a cake that's shaped like a log (which is what bûche means), that you buy at a bakery, a supermarket, or that you can make yourself! There's a bunch of different flavours, ranging from chocolate to raspberry, passionfruit, or even more novel options. It can be a proper cake, with a génoise base, or have a more mousse-y consistency, with a craquant base.

🎄 Putting your slippers (chaussons) under the Christmas tree: unlike other cultures, the tradition isn't to hang stockings, but to leave your slippers out! Father Christmas then piles the presents around them, and adds some clementimes and other sweets in them.

🎄 Bonus for Christian people: the Santons de Provence. They're little ceramic figurines that are a part of Nativity decorations; there's of course the "core Nativity" (Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the donkey and the ox ± the three kings), but then you can add various other figures for instance representing more or less anachronistic professions like merchants, lawyers, chocolate-makers and the like.

After the movie, I am starting to see how Zag totally made Thomas and his team force in the songs for the christmas ep (and write around them) lol

HAHAHA we saw a french news article that someone shared in our ML French culture server, and it's in French so I'm not gonna share it now but basically it's an interview of Zag about the movie. And he literally says in it that the Christmas special was kind of a test to see how the audience would react to songs added to the show, and if it would work and all with the goal in mind to make a movie with musicals.

So you aren't wrong at all in this he literally said so 😂

everyday i hear about the french changing mari to be white passing to pander to the white masses. Everyday i want to shove american dragon jake long and atla and wendy wu into their fucking faces with direct eye contact

Seriously, it can’t be that hard to treat cultures foreign to you with respect. I looked up the writers for those three series and they have a combined two people with asian surnames credited. That means these white ass whities were able to write iconic pieces of children’s media with minimal offense to the cultures they took inspiration from (though I think there’s some discourse surrounding LOK’s attitudes towards indigenous people and SEA people). That’s not to say it’s okay that these series didn’t do more to empower POC in the workplace, but it still goes to show that white writers can write POC well if they care enough. ML has no excuse.
