spending this indigenous peoples' day thinking about how for so long i was hesitant to acknowledge my arawak (taíno) ancestry bc i didn't personally know my great-grandmother and have been taught so little about that heritage in my family, so i was afraid of "appropriating" it; and how i've realized that ignoring that part of my history does not honor those ~500 survivors who are the ancestors of every person of arawak descent alive today. bc they survived columbus' genocide, i'm here. that i don't know much about them is a result of that genocide; remembering them as my family may be all i can do for them right now, so that's what i will do.

today in kindergarten volunteer adventures: one of the kids asked me if I had children, which happens at least once every time I go in; the first time one boy asked me if I had kids and then followed it up by asking if I was in 1st grade, which is possibly the funniest combination of questions I've ever been asked. anyway, until today I thought I didn't have children but this sweet kindergartner revealed to me that I have four kids... ages 11, 12, 17, and 88 :D I don't know anything about them yet but happily the kindergartners love telling me things* so I'm sure ONE of them will be able to help me out here. I can't believe I've been a deadbeat mom for like 90 years now. this is especially enchanting to me bc I'm turning 34 tomorrow LMAO

#I LOVE THESE KIDS SO MUCH... #she's not even in the class I volunteer in! i do lunch/recess duty as well so i've gotten to meet kids from all 3 classes :3 #*possibly the greatest thing about volunteering with kindergartners is that they LOVE explaining the rules #one kid came to tattle on another kid my second day and i was like 'oh let's ask mrs. p about this i'm new and don't know the rules' #not only did he promptly start explaining them to me - when he got to the one about 'no tattling' he paused and was like 'oh yeah' #and then just wandered away to go play with blocks. and that's how i learned there's a rule against tattling in mrs. p's kindergarten class #i was really impressed he put 2 and 2 together like that on the spot. even for adults that can be a struggle #anyway. today was the leprechaun hunt which was very exciting for us all :D the leprechaun is 1001 years old and HATES sugary cereal #helper teacher #bonewhiteglory.txt

As part of a project I recently started working on, I needed some images to decorate a webpage for truly me dolls. I immediately thought of this classic ad!

The line “She’s just like you. You’re a part of history, too!” has always been really fun to me, as it brings to light my favorite way of looking at modern AG dolls - the historical characters show kids that they were an important part of history, and through modern ag dolls, kids also are reminded that they are an important part of the history being made every day!

However, there’s no really great images of this spread that I could use. (And even if they were great, since this was only in print, I’d be bumping up against the copyright of person who took the photo of the catalog, as well as that of AG. That’s fine for a tumblr post, but not for the project I’m working on!)

So... I made my own version of the banner, and I figured I’d share it!

It was a bit tricky trying to figure out the fonts, but I got there! There’s a version with a white background as well as a transparent one (though there’s a bit of a “halo” around the black lettering, as a result of the hoops i had to jump through to use that font lol). Feel free to use it yourself, no credit required :)

#thinking about how everyone assumes i am fresh out of high school when i am nearly 30 #and the fact that i can't really connect w any of my classmates bc they're so much younger than me #most of the ppl my age (and younger) are faculty but i can't really connect w them either since i'm a student #and i don't really want to connect w any of them anyways since none of them wear a mask #feeling v directionless i went back to college bc i was sick of working low paying garbage dead end jobs #but i still don't know what i want to do #and i know most ppl change majors multiple times and i have plenty of time #but in my new student class for all of the assignments lately i have to choose but i still have no idea so it's v discouraging #the more i look into my options the more i am like i don't want to do any of these actually #or i don't feel capable/it would take too long #today is day 3 of my new job on campus is v laid back and only 13 hours a week but i still feel like i have such little time now #i am tired and lonely #also feeling p bad about my appearance i keep feeling like i wish i was still cute #but i also thought this years ago and i am sure i will think the same thing about my current self in a few years #sigh
