Is The Accountant any good? I remember there being arguments about it when it first came out, but I’ve never actually seen it. I don’t wanna watch something that has bad representation, but since you just posted about it I figure I can ask: did the writers do their research?

I'll be upfront that I'm not wholly sure how well I can answer this question. Ultimately I think trying to watch things 'For Representation' is kind of a sunk-cost game, especially when it comes to something as diverse as Autism - I think at the end of the day what's considered 'good representation' and what's 'bad representation' is largely going to come down to Simply Personal Preference (with some notable exceptions like Music who shit the bed across the board). If I say I think the movie is fine, there's going to be a bunch of people who think it's dogshit and so on. These days I mostly try to judge things as A Story, not For Representation, does this make sense?

I will try to answer it though. Ultimately, I think The Accountant tells a decent story. I've watched this movie a few times and while I wouldn't list it as A Favorite of mine, I also enjoy watching it when I happen to come across it. A bare bones answer to your question 'did the writers do their research?' - Yes, I think they did. The details of this response have gotten away from me because I have a tendency to overexplain so I will be putting the rest of this under a cut!

TL;DR tho - Is it a good movie? I mean, I've watched it more than once, and I'm not someone who will sit through things I don't like. I think it does a decent enough job with its autistic character if you like the genre. The Accountant is a thriller that centers violence, which is why a lot of people do not like it, but that's The Story it's telling. If that kind of genre bothers you, you probably wouldn't enjoy this movie. WARNING though because the film does have scenes with bright flashing lights that may trigger photosensitivity in viewers.

The main character is autistic, and the movie does not shy away from this but also doesn't necessarily Dwell on it. It's brought up multiple times, but I don't think it's ever especially Emphasized? I would say it's treated like any other character trait. Chris's ability with math may be a savant-like skill, but mileage on this may vary wrt whether this bothers you (and also if the movie ever defines it like this? I think the synopsis does, but I can't remember if it's in the Script)

He's blunt and terse in social situations, but not outwardly/exaggeratedly rude or mean to others. While it feels fairly obvious he's discomfited by small talk, he makes an effort to navigate it in an effort to avoid being rude or offensive towards others - the tone of this feels more 'I want to avoid causing unnecessary conflict/hurt feelings' and less 'I have to Act Normal to get people to like me', Chris is very solitary and seems to like this, although he does have people he gets along with well. He has a flat affect and a monotone - although there are moments when he's more excited/relaxed and has more facial/tone variation. He seems to split pretty evenly on making (or faking) eye-contact and looking in fully other directions in conversations. He also stims most notably with a repetitive phrase he uses to help center/calm himself down. The actor portrays these traits in a way I would deem realistic - it's not exaggerated or caricature like/offensive, although I'm almost certain the actor himself is not autistic (which some people will take issue with).

I can't tell if his interactions with Dana are meant to be interpreted as somewhat romantic in nature? I think she comes close to kissing him once, but he gets distracted and ultimately seems to Like Her without necessarily being Interested in Her (at least to my interpretation). He does go out of his way to defend her - apparently out of character for him to some degree - but I can't tell how much of this is Romantic Undertones and how much is simply Injustice / the fact that they get along. Honestly, I kind of interpret Dana as autistic as well, and kind of view their interactions through that lens, but I can't say for sure that this was the story's Intent. This is worth noting only in as much as I wanted to mention autistic Dana lol - i don't identify myself as aro/ace but i'm also not particularly interested in Relationships, so I don't feel particularly compelled to comment on whether the inclusion or exclusion of romance involving autistic characters is Good or Bad.

The movie also features a character whose role is more or less to be The Spokesperson About Autism - the one who makes the most effort to actually Define it in film to the audience. This is the man who runs the institute where Chris almost got an education, who speaks to Chris's parents when he was a child and makes a brief reappearance at the end. He very explicitly states that autism is not some Scary Disorder that's Stealing Children (I believe both conversations center parents who speak derisively about having an autistic child and say they'd like to believe there's a Normal Kid inside their autistic one, and he explicitly dismisses this notion/attitude - "your son's not less than, he's different"). He also says that attempting to force autistic children to meet NT standards is not going to work - you have to work with them where they're at and accommodate them sufficiently, which is true and a very Healthy way to approach raising autistic children. I would consider this the most Easily Noted way the film shows how/what its writers researched - I would say Largely Positive.

He does mention learning eye-contact / nonverbal cues when talking about child-Chris's potential education, but I don't necessarily consider this an inherent Flaw, but also acknowledge that's Personal Interpretation. Worth noting that another character in this same scene is proof they aren't Forcing compliance or NT-standard communication (an aide is attempting to put another autistic child in shoes, and when she refuses by kicking them off and wiggling around, the aide stops and says 'okay, no shoes today' and takes the shoes and leaves), and a similar conversation at the end of the movie - set in the Present - does not include any mention of learning how to mask, and instead explicitly focuses on the importance of NT people learning how to effectively communicate with/understand autistic people rather than trying to force the inverse.

Chris does at one point define himself as 'high-functioning', I'm not sure whether the movie itself believes in this dichotomy. The guy who runs the Institute - the movie's literal Autism Spokesperson - does not seem to use or approve of them. Another autistic character in the film is not labeled in this way and is a clear subversion of this kind of dichotomy as well. Chris did not learn about autism from someone who actually Knows About autism, he learned about it from his dad who Primarily seemed to focus on teaching Chris how to mask/fight. Is this Good Rep? IDK - it's likely an NT viewer wouldn't pick up on this distinction, so I can't say for sure whether this is a Flaw or not.

The way Chris's sensory issues are handled Is a little sketch (his dad did not believe in accommodating him in any way - this often is portrayed by the film as child abuse - and taught him to deliberately overstimulate himself with bright flashing lights and loud music while doing DPT with a leg roller in an attempt to desensitize him, because "The real world is not sensory-friendly". I'm not Entirely sure whether the movie wants us to believe this works well or not - there are two notable scenes where Chris does this, one where he reaches his timer goal and one where he winds up melting down instead, so I'm not entirely certain what the audience takeaway is meant to be? Ultimately though, I don't think Chris's father is framed by the film as a Good Dad even though Chris loves him and believes him to be one. This might just be my interpretation and not the film's intention though - I have not sought out any BTS info for this movie.

There are several scenes that feature Chris as a child having violent/disruptive meltdowns - there can be mixed feelings about this. Some people might find them voyeuristic / a negative trait they're uncomfortable with. Chris's mom leaves because she cannot handle his meltdowns and Also because she resents Chris's father for not letting Chris stay at the institute to learn. Chris's father helps him through meltdowns via repeating a nursery rhyme and hugging him to his chest for the pressure (it Could arguably be read as restraining, but Chris is never Pinned Down to the Ground outside of an arrest scene, so I would consider it more DPT than 'abusive restraint'). I feel it's inauthentic to try avoiding the issue of meltdowns when it comes to portraying autism in media - they're a fact of life. My opinion on seeing NT actors portray them tends to vary. I would consider this a personal preference thing again - what are you willing to view/tolerate? His meltdowns Are, I believe, framed as wholly separate from his ability to fight/shoot though - they aren't conflated or linked. Chris's violence is, I think, wholly attributed to the way his father raised him, not something tied to him being autistic, he has a NT brother who shares the same use/level of violence.

Chris is a Morally Grey Character though - he does good things, he does bad things, the movie does not shy away from either, and some people take issue with this. [BTW when I say 'take issue with', I do not necessarily mean to deride this opinion or mock people who hold it. Simply pointing out where I have seen critique aimed.] Ultimately, this character trait is a feature of the Story and its Genre not in its attempt to Represent Autism - I think I've seen people critique this story by saying things like 'it's acting like he's a killer because he's autistic, as if all low-empathy people are killers, and that's Bad Representation because NT people will see it and think That's what defines autism' but this rings false to me on a variety of levels.

For one, Chris is not shown to have particularly low empathy. Even if he was low-empathy, Chris is shown to care deeply about a variety of other characters (these Are two different traits btw, 'empathy' and 'caring about other people' are not intrinsically linked) - so there's no basis to the claim that his Autism is what singles him out from other people as a reason he does or does not kill. Again, Chris's ability/willingness to fight is framed almost entirely as a result of the way his father raised him, not as having anything to do with him being autistic.

It's also, as I said, the GENRE.

One major reason I don't like categorizing things by Good/Bad Representation is because 'Representation' does not necessarily align with Telling A Story. If, in order to be Good Representation, a character Must be Morally Good, then this severely limits the amount of stories one can tell, and I'm someone who enjoys tragedies/horrors/complicated stories involving complicated/morally-gray characters. This is what I mean when I say Good/Bad Representation is largely a conversation of Preferences - I like it when I can see character I relate to in the kinds of stories I like to watch. Other people might try to claim that trying to include autistic characters in these stories is inherently Bad Representation because they're stories about 'Bad People'. Preference all the way down.

[ALSO because the notion of what traits make up 'good rep' and which are 'bad rep' is completely subjective, which I've talked about before. If someone says the film is Bad Rep because Chris is 'too blunt/un-emotive and that's a stereotype' I'm fundamentally going to disagree because I am a person who is blunt and has a flat affect, and so I would consider the inclusion of those traits (provided they aren't being actively Mocked by the material) good representation. It's always going to be a subjective conversation to some degree, there are no universally objective ways to rank/discuss the topic).]

Ultimately, I don't know how to end this because I did my tl;dr before I got this far. I wouldn't call it revolutionary representation and probably wouldn't ever really be like 'oh This is the film you want to watch to understand autism', because it's not really About autism. It's about a guy who works as an accountant for regular people AND criminals and who is extremely good at fighting to defend himself / seek revenge when he wants it. This guy also happens to be autistic. Does this make sense? I hope I've managed to answer your question somehow lmfao.

that is to say my going "omg his autistic swag" re: winston which i am correct about & that ofc that [these are Othered characters] only enhances the verisimilitude & relatability like, yeah, i exist in the world lmao i've been the collectively excluded coworker, of all the characters at [situation] i am not the one who the story's about, the way you have to kind of fudge or in turn be dismissive of canon to invoke the idea that anyone cares about winston, like we've all seen it, that you need people to hold to principles abt how to treat Anyone Else that they do not hold to, that [people personally care about your experience b/c they personally like you] doesn't come through when being nd means being deemed impersonable & unlikable by most people most of the time, that ppl will be hostile b/c instead their interpersonal interactions are about excluding & punishing as an exercise of their elevated social power, & this is justified by "but they bring it upon themselves & should just Learn n Choose to Act Right anyways" organic aba attitude directed towards anyone who gets to be considered "abnormal," ppl being mean / derisive right in front of you b/c of assuming you Can't participate in interactions even to register the treatment but also b/c they just figure they Can, which is true, b/c the target doesn't have the social power here & everyone else is bound to unionize around the person who Does / personally likes them better or whatever. like literally so true king as winston gets bullied constantly / made an individual exception for mistreatment and nobody cares abt that or anything else, and also people will tend to only value you for some perceived niche usefulness to take advantage of

here comes a segue, also that i can go "well i know how i'm treated so like Samesies to all that, but even though in my heart i Am spontaneous & theatrical & enthusiastic & Talkative, i am usually not being that way externally so i guess not very same" like fucking godspeed to winston never letting up on just saying things, as a person, who should get to talk, even though everyone else hates it & punishes him for it. which is like, well it's b/c otherwise even if it's Realistic he'd stop interacting w/anyone around him or just leave, he wouldn't get material that way (although sometimes his material does just get to be [effective extra / background rando]) and also it's like, you can't [make the right personal choices] your way out of being affected by ableism & when you Don't talk that's also rude & weird & excluded & punished etc etc, like how winston can also get shit when he hasn't even said anything, And at the cost of [not getting to talk]. just about picking your poison, both options are shit and hurt the person who has to make the choice, maybe just potentially trying to guess which one will work slightly better in some situation, based on that situation, what you want out of it rn, what you've got to work with atm, masking being a shitty experience but also a sometimes needed on a practical basis strategy but also takes effort & energy someone may not have & still never fully works when most autistic ppl will have spent plenty of time trying to be "normal / correct" and yet ofc are not received that way & accepted as Worthy enough to treat like a "normal" person, and are still autistic. (shoutout to at least trying to have more Options, e.g. to persist to talk and just express my personality anyways as winston does is what woud be more difficult for me, so it's like hell yes lol. and i mean idk ideally How To Mask isn't even just like, the way it would be in [inadvertent autistic character] media where oh Finally the person realizes they're in the Wrong & should choose to be normal vs so rudely being themself, and other people will totally finally value them as a fellow person who deserves fundamental respect for that fact (syke). rather than autistic people discussing their own strategies As practical strategies to be Potentially consciously employed when necessary for xyz effect, which is still not guaranteed to succeed.)

which is just how like, a masking autistic person who doesn't say much wouldn't get to be a character, and sure thinking about struggling to relate to any Characters ever very directly since forever lol, like, as a kid being like "well i get good grades b/c i'm not like allowed to get a C & knocking out school shit conveniently comes pretty easily" but like the Good Grade Kid in anything being like "i love school sm & i wish i was studying rn" vs me like well i hate school more than not & do hw last minute & never study? and other Shrugging abt external traits that can continue to this day lmao where i'm only just now like, you'd be considered A Bad Character (in terms of being too Uninteresting too Not Plot Driving to be worth focus / non npcness) and ofc you're not really the peak externally anxious ones ever even if you suppose you'd more outwardly align thusly....but that i've also always recognized that [well this is how i'm treated / regarded] in having this tendency to prefer side / tertiary characters who may be funny little guys, peripheral jokes, generally framed as Less Serious than the mainer characters w/their less relatable or interesting goings on. and this being somewhat conscious as well lmao like that's right i'm being contrarian get the protagonists or the like ten year olds who are deemed serious/worthy enough that it's logical to bestowing some romantic subplot upon them (some things never changing lol, like oh sorry was winston having a crush supposed to be instantly universally understood as a joke just like [his sexuality] adjacent matters are more dragged out into the open so as to make that more of a joke as well i guess, the Billions punishment of who gets dignity(tm) and who can't help but have serious romantic subplots as perhaps required,even rendered Inevitable, by being serious, deserving characters. very curious about why there is a lack of info about ben kim's love life at all. is he hanging in perfect balance between "too secondary/tertiary funny little guy to devote time thusly. for like even a passing mention? do we count his fake marriage plot? his elevator take off your shirt maneuvers?" and "too Sympathetic to be mocked / to have the Indignity of others knowing abt [his sexuality] adjacent matters, as a joke at his expense as well" like. very mysterious. monocle thinking emoji Considering the matters re: tuk as well. that if winston is presumed to have had casual sex last season that wasn't just another joke at his expense somehow, it may be because he was proximate enough to tuk's Sympathetic / somewhat more Serious character treatment in that instance? however. would also consider tuk talking to wendy abt like "well i was dumped my gf thinks i'm weird and look at how much longer my texts are than hers" to be a bit of Indignity & Joke At His Expense. like no wonder he & winston may have apparently gone from getting off on the wrong foot to embracing each other offscreen to show back up later in the season as good pals. the nd people do find each other lol, and/or just being able to operate on principles like "trying" to "understand" "another person" ever, and the like, b/c being Normal(tm) isn't some objective reality, after all. but i can't presume they're even meant to be Genuine Friends for Sure when a) maybe winston's supposed to instead be presumed as somehow so aggressive despite being the guy continuously run over & suckerpunched by everyone around him over nothing and everything, like omg stop rudely telling tuk to just be himself without the organic aba of "here's how Winners act, axe cap style or otherwise," what an asshole to be Pressuring him to be Fine how he Is, and b) idk we haven't seen much abt it yet & so far it's winston seeming to be backing/hyping tuk up, which is fun, just doesn't make it [whoa, a character Does care abt anything re: winston] guaranteed from tuk or anything)

anyways back to how as a kid i'd be like "to hell w/the narrative prioritizing these ppl's stories & framing them as deservingly more serious, i'm inherently on the side of that funny little guy often cropping up to be deemed a bit weird & pushed aside / dismissed" like yeah Clearly i was recognizing the autistacity & etc of it all lmfao. a classic time in like fourth grade english / literature / reading whatever class where Everyone was reading the same assigned book & one in-class project was like, of the four middle school kids in this thing, pick your favorite & decorate a tee that's Them themed. and of the like circa twenty or thirty of us, me and one other guy picked the one out of the four characters who had the like seemingly lowest stakes devoted/pov chapters & whose other thing was being received / often enough dismissed for being overly Pedantic or details focused or whatever all lol like, and so what? we love fun facts (also the whole Interpretation of like, someone who shares a lot of trivia all the time? Must be presenting themself as an authority (b/c that's the only way we all operate when communicating, surely) and Must think they are a Know It All with nothing to learn (?????????) the only reason someone might, say, study up on some niche lore that nobody else would think matters, much less share it....of course....) anyways. revisited available excerpts more recently like well i was right, delightful passages and of Course that character resonated. i'd say like well nowadays i'll still oft relate to the funny little unserious side characters but i'll Know why i relate vs doing it on principle lol. like well yes i'm perhaps somewhat better at noticing Why i relate. though still get tripped up by the externality of it all sometimes like "well i guessss i'm technically more like outwardly anxious character a but i'm more engaged by & cheering for That lively menace over there" like, oh wait right, i don't Really relate as much to the former vs latter after all, it's just that i'd never manifest As Is as A Character b/c it doesn't serve story flow or whatever lmfao so gotta reverse engineer things through that lens / afford for plenty of flexibility lol....but Also i still do it on principle somewhat too lmfao like hell yes that's right, valuing the non prominent dismissed punished quanternary character who is limited to only being peripheral & somewhat diminished in worth even by the author/s themself b/c of being autistic? winston billions is just like me for real. just inadvertently recreating "how We All totally react to People who are just like That, yknow" like yeah i sure do know. trying for having it both ways re: the material not being wholly unsympathetic or Constantly unserious towards winston either, but also a) the themes of "what's deemed worthy qualities / behaviors, how are they judged to outwardly manifest in people / thus inferred by others to be present" can only be explored the ways the writers explore them, and if the writers are limited by "but i mean also, we're all just Normal & value Normalcy too, right, so [ppl who are Weird & Annoying like That] are abnormal Others, while to be someone going >:/ at them, writing them off, and/or either punishing them for how they Always Insist On Being or accepting/permitting others doing that: is to be Normal. and among Us" (i played a few rounds of among us again the other day finally. gamer mode restored. and Again just like winston fr) then the material is limited to that too. can't be surprised if "wellll. people are kind of needlessly mean to them i guess, and i guessss they're still a person after all, but they Are cringer & fail, i.e. Worse, than the rest of us, & it's just not a big deal if others are always awful to them, b/c that's just so Normal" when that's the common irl stance & this may simply be imitating life w/o that much deeper thought / exploration of another perspective....cue how [taylor can really only talk abt not being cishet when relating it to someone's cishet situational problem] could be explained like:

[normal correct cishet] perspective'd and are uncomfortable and lacking to readily disrespectful from an alternate perspective, perhaps, which differs from "also, characters being wrong / assholes about it" which may also be featured, though they may not be Meant as written to be as wrong as they are interpreted to be as nonbinary viewers. so like. Limits of [material] limited by the writers....that the general / assumed point of viewer perspective around here sure seems to be quite nt / cishet....that it's wildly plausible the entire writers room is allistic and/or accepts that "Normal" and Correct perspective on autistic ppl as "idk, those weird annoying losers who are just Like That so we all rightfully hate them, which means the manifestation of that in how we treat them is Right too" and that it's normal for some people to get to treat others however they want based on being better / more deserving, b/c like, everyone else is Choosing to be worse & deserving less power. analyzed in the show, even, but it's like how it's Normal to be like "i understand abuse = bad" but also Normal to not know how it operates or looks & think it's defined by a sufficient degree of Exceptionality & the unknowable intent/feelings of the parties involved & ultimate logical conclusions of victim blaming b/c Eye would never be abused & they have to get out of it Themselves instead of Accepting it like they do, something's wrong w/you if you're mistreated w/o Just Walking Away, so the [vice versa] applies as well, you're mistreated w/o just walking away if something's wrong w/you. and abuse can't be everywhere & acceptable & permeating, just like autistic people can't be everywhere, nor trans people, nor other Ostensibly Understood As Bad values like [some people are inferior] or [What golden rule] or [actually you do always know what other ppl are going through so if they're not like =( then do whatever, and if they Were hurt/struggling, it's their fault for hiding it?? also if they weren't hiding it they're being pathetic bitches anyways??? get over yourself????] like the old "damn we'll just call anything abuse nowadays and we're saying it way too much and victims really have too much power" attitude like, first of all what else is new, what else is(n't) a perspective exclusive to interpersonal abuse. there's way too many trans and autistic people nowadays yeah, i jumped aboard based on nothing but wanting that sweet social clout, and i do live like a king now thanks....really tying it all together like, tbt despite [oh ways of yore i was clearly having my queer / autistic experiences w/o Knowing it but i knew it was Something] also applying to [abusive home life] i didn't start to figure like "oh but is it Abuse(tm)" despite [yes.] when it's like, it's never really directly represented when it's a very special topic abt physical abuse of a child that's quickly obvious to others, or it's the weird like cartoon evil family while the protagonist is Unaffected & still normal(tm) enough, or it's "stuff that happens to children all the time that's deemed inappropriate to invoke around children," & only through a media experience when eighteen where there was Effectively textual enough abuse despite not using the word b/c it was also only portrayed obliquely around a teen who was first received as kind of weird but also not like the "so, Unsympathetic & unimportant" kind of weird, & in being the externally [quiet] way that i also tend to be, so it was like, huh.......that might have been......Relatable

and i'm now recklessly slinging around the word Abuse like we do in this day & age, like how that's what bullying is, even when bullying is supposed to be Not That Bad and Normal and Often Enough Deserved / Avoidable (so: deserved), just like abuse in general lol like it's really not abnormal even while ppl will be like well it's inherently this outlier point one percentile experience, right. like how trauma has to be abnormal and restrict itself to being an exception / outlier, right, ppl just throwing it around all the time for things that aren't that bad or a result of deliberate, evil intent and isn't the real problem when people who have the power to thoughtlessly hurt others might have to Exert Thought abt themselves? which means to power to not even have to think abt it has been at all upended and perhaps diminished?? which means something is Wrong. it's the abused people who are tyrannically avoiding interactions with me On My Terms b/c i've never had to think about, much less bother, how to actually consciously be safe to interact with. anyways that is to say i'm still like embarrassed to be like, f that it Is abuse to be bullied, to act like someone else is something that belongs to you and that you get to use to take something you want from them, so as to say that like, that Is what winston experiences lol. we Are out here like "does being autistic inherently come with experiences that align w/trauma, or is virtually every autistic person experiencing trauma b/c of how they're treated on various fronts like all thee time" and i guess rian's thing now is that she's surprised that power imbalances are for real and has expected them to Not Exist when it comes to wanting to be, and assuming to be, considered & treated as a peer by any higher ups, but despite her condemnation of ppl Using others, or having been bullied but even being beyond hating anyone about that or anything else, she immediately decides winston is of use to her as entertainment, and potentially the simple rewards of an affirmed power trip whenever she Can treat him however she wants, spontaneously & openly, and/or even via the more distilled/direct power affirmation of "i can try to hurt this person; now they're clearly hurt." the sort of damning fact she'll put effort into interacting with him More, and more Personally, b/c she decided she was interested in his interest (Despite his interest....) but the moment she's busy being superiorly normal & serious it's back to [hurting him] mode as he tries to interact with her on "we're peers, something of friends, and we've Been talking abt this stuff" mode, b/c even if there's any reciprocity / more genuine interactions ever, he's still at the mercy of what she wants, which has been [various manifestations of her using him for various purposes] and disdain for his efforts to appeal/connect or even to act like he can assume he is, and will be treated like, a peer. who could be so clueless. what kind of sicko would use people and be like "so long as i have the advantage such as that i Can use anyone, it's b/c i deserve to, for being better than them" (rian would, in a "normal" way). also that it's still [taylor handshake winston] territory despite taylor relating to & personally favoring rian & not intervening on her, or anyone else's treatment of winston....taylor also thinks they have to put up with all these besties questioning if they're human w/human feelings, and wendy truly in that Enabler role w/axe like, wow taylor after i narced on what you seemingly personally confided to me to axe so that he could still use you as his best golden child tool, you still left b/c of how axe mistreats & uses you & blames you for it & won't actually accept he's in the wrong on basic principle???? i'm wronged too here & i'm sooo pissed & i'm going to hurt you as much as i can =)

& then [everything wendy does re: tayor & axe in s5 and throwing them under the bus, "after i specifically asked you not to" from taylor, b/c all that matters re justifying such treatment (doing Whatever re: taylor so long as wendy doesn't really care abt taylor caring abt the consequences) is her idea of her relationship w/axe, which in actuality is ungodly btw] like. & then:

their real dad is shit & seems pretty safe to presume abusive when he barges in being transphobic & shitty abt it & has only showed up b/c he can Use them for his own ego ambitions & feels taylor is obligated to support him b/c they're his child (& taylor feels that obligation too) & this meager suggestion he cares at all about what's fundamentally important to taylor is enough to move them to tears & then he'll say he has no reason to be in taylor's life if they're not devoting everything into giving him what he wants. but their stand-in shit parent who is axe, who Does win by being Here & (more) consistently being "don't be transphobic to taylor. usually. ish" & actually knowing/getting things about them vs douglas not having a clue or even more limited by [clearly only interpreting things in ways that are convenient to him. like the convo about math where he pretends his not emotionally supporting his child & only being reachable on his terms through his (work) interests was him doing what was for / worked the best] but, like taylor says, does still only ultimately view and treat them like a tool he owns and can Use however. and wendy's been another tool of his who gets this supposed special status b/c she keeps the operation running w/axe reined in just enough sometimes to not lose access to things, like to employees, who wendy will try to appease so they don't don't Betray & Wrong axe (and her, apparently) by reacting to how they're treated and to the fact they have no recourse via appealing for better by just leaving, or maybe arrogantly wanting a raise or something. which like, Is a logical extension of [offer Therapy that keeps employees from quitting / underperforming / do HR that keeps employees from quitting + suing the company / do "mediation" that blames the aggrieved party & requires they compromise, i.e. cede things to whoever is wronging them] b/c again like, abuse and its logic/principles Is very "normal," workers are exploited, only do as much damage control re: whatever supposed Mistreatment is required to keep people in line and things running along. being abused by family is like, oh yeah more of the same then just existing anywhere autistically in interpersonal interactions where i'm still not a person & punished for nothing except whatever narrative/interpretations are put on me & the impulsive feelings of everyone w/more social power, or more of the same re: [capitalism] and anything else wrt Some People Are Better / More Of People Than Others. and/or that on top of that you Do run into ppl who, unknowingly, w/o textual labels, are abusive & recognize someone's tendency through experience to endure mistreatment / their vulnerability such that nobody else will recognize it as mistreatment or at least won't intervene out of respect for your superior social status/power rather than, like, respect for the fact you're both people & that, on principle, there shouldn't be this unilateral "well but That person deserves to be treated this way for being inherently inferiorly Less Goodnormal" put into practice. i've sure had abusive friends, or acquaintances, or coworkers, or [complete strangers]. winston has an abusive friend. taylor at least has had that re: wendy, even if wendy's been unmoored from who she was enabling there the whole damn time and so went all season Not trying to wrangle taylor into staying in a vulnerably usable position for that person, putting them in that position herself, and undermining or punishing them preemptively and/or after they've Acted Out Of Line, and of course, dismissing any criticisms, unless mafee unasked calls her an asshole half for the ways she's used him too and then she's like "i'm so ethical, i told the truth about my revenge hipaa violations, that's all that matters??? who will bribe the ethics board out of rescinding my license?? omg axe our relationship is so amazing. we can even do one housework" like, eugh.

anyways taylor handshake winston. fighting the discomfort and guilt of talking about Abuse as Abuse b/c oh but it's not that bad. taylor thinking they bring it upon themself and/or should have to be able to handle/weather it themself and accept all responsibility for what other people can & have done to them, very [i've Been having to endure abuse] approaches lol, perhaps limited themself such as that they can't intervene even in how an employees treated by another b/c well, the same perspectives apply. (although bit of a sidenote in another anticipated Usual / Common Enough Media Perspective / limit in the perspective of whoever's writing it, in that you know. despite [oh you bring it upon yourself], it's Also like, well, people threatening the existing structures w/power over their lives is Also wrong & evil, though. like that abused people become evil and Want Revenge and maybe hate someone who didn't treat them as a person & had the power to do so, fucked up of them. vs it's also fucked up if nobody helped them but they just Took It and didn't have the Self Respect to be bothered enough to Feel Mistreated, surely. it's only okay if they felt bad but weren't angry and someone saves them but it's not necessarily too much effort / they never perceive that the person they're saving hasn't done what they should to facilitate the efficiency of their own being saved....conveniently, the version of things where nobody's relative power has to change or be threatened. anyways, what i'm getting around to is how unsurprising a stance it would be if it's like, "oh sure i guess maybe rian's a little mean but a) winston started it by deserving it And it's not a big deal and b) if winston "gets back" at her by idk, being angry, disliking her, much less doing anything petty, that will be The Real problem like oh rian was just innocently doing normal things but winston, inferior and abnormal and undeserving as he is, is thus the one truly Out Of Line. axe being terrible to taylor, but the Real issue is taylor Betraying him by recognizing that and breaking away and, gasp, perhaps negatively affecting axe & his company in the process. axe was just doing his thing! cmon! and he's so epic! vs taylor being weird and so maliciously consciously strategizing to their own benefit and only their own benefit, b/c axe is the one who's positioned His benefit as taylor's cost, my god, how could taylor have refused compromise that is axe's advantage and accepted the incompatibility of mutual benefit / absence of reciprocity and so Not factored in what axe would want, as if that's their eternal responsibility No Matter What? handshake.) anyways and also how there could be that matter of projection like, i know ppl Could see me as weird & off in an undeserving cringe unworthy way, like they do winston, so i have to see myself as entirely different from winston, and if i argue on his behalf then might undermine my "proving" i'm deserving/worthy through various avenues of perceived/measured success. if you have the status to be able to Other someone, you have the status to not deserve what they do (negative), or simply be made Vulnerable by having to question whether anything you do could be hypothetically deemed cringe or wrong or undignified or inadequate, etc etc....again forgetting where i encountered someone positing like Cringe Comedy as Painful as being too potentially relatable, like, the "secondhand embarrassment" like recognizing how the experience could be Yours & that would suck, yet this is inherent sympathy w/the cringe person lmao. and me thinking about like boo to comedy (and horror, other side of the coin) with the Normal important characters who are Above It All, vs all the zany side character Others who just won't be normal enough to stop deserving being the butt of jokes (or horror where well idk those people can die. not our epic survivor protags though). like excuse me comedy (or horror) is a perspective of knowing Things Happen To You, You Yourself, and the absurdity / dissonance in things not happening as they "should,"

i.e. you can't & don't just [well simply make all the correct choices? be generally deserving?] your way into things working out for you. that you know you aren't the one perfectly sympathetic and always righteous person in the world, and can laugh at yourself and be laughed at (with comedy as This perspective, not as yet another compounding of usual power imbalances b/w people that transforms / explores nothing, b/c it's just going "haha those other lesser ppl are so dumb & have it coming. anyways." not ppl laughing at you as the butt of the joke b/c things are only funny when taking a hit doled out by life is a logical, deserved punishment). why have the Normal characters who can helpfully recognize "well that's comedic b/c wadda hell" and be too sympathetic to be so weird & inferior as to be laughed at. seeing myself more in the funny little unserious weird side characters as a queer nd abused kid, and even now like, that the best [well that Is relatable] material tends to not put such relevant experiences as Directly, Textually under focus, but there's resonance & perhaps fleeting / one or two degrees removed gestures to / glimpse of such experiences, and what interacting w/that person as someone Removed from that situation is like, including that the audience does not get to be privy to it directly either. and that it can be like, insert vine audio they ask you how you are & you just have to say that you're fine but you're not fine (insert autistic masking cheat code about the How Are You ritual. if you clip through the wall you can skip the interaction w/o penalty) like, people will act Normal And Fine b/c they're supposed to! probably all the more insistently if they know they're on thin ice w/that! but actually you can just Tell when ppl have Real(tm) Problems worthy of real sympathy, you Do always know what someone's going through, you Can't have always been unknowingly encountering trans ppl all the time all your life, you Would know if someone you talked to for 5 seconds ever was autistic. i'm relating to the unfathomable "wow why's this person Just Being Difficult i guess, instead of simply only ever acting how i'm happy with? a pain. shruggg" i'm relating to the undignified elevated chaotic life'd characters b/c like hell yeah when you're not having experiences deservingly goodnormal enough to be a generally relatable less weird character than that. occasionally i'm relating to the people who are oddly cagey but still focused on until someone figures out they're going tf through it even when they didn't just infer that as why they might be oddly cagey in the first place, which doesn't come up that much really, b/c also it's easier when ppl are just more open about what's going on b/c they aren't That isolated or Abnormal and won't just be deemed like whoa the weirdo overshares ig, just another way they're a freak, b/c it's only sympathetic & serious if someone already judged worthy was talking about it, as is allowed, b/c what they say is Worthy too. i'm really surely most aligned w/this side character assessed as timid & bland & surely never talking b/c they have nothing going on to even express, who nevertheless actually is vivacious & elevated & boldly independent, it just doesn't tend to Manifest Externally as presumed it would, while their external traits are wrongly interpreted to infer [things about them that are completely untrue] and which are considered somewhat contemptible. like hell yeah i'm the contempted Weirdly quiet / withdrawn person which people Do apparently presume must be because you have nothing thought or felt that could motivate you to express it, and then i manifest [my actual personality / Being Myself more unhindered; even though ways you act in reaction to significant/extensive experiences Are part of your actual personality & being yourself as well. cue the active effort sometimes in ppl figuring out how they act when they Don't mask] and that is in turn generally deemed Too Much but at least i have fun. shoutout to winston still just like, being present and talking. go off

that is to say, winston and taylor should try kissing about it, and i should try wrapping this up lol. have to acknowledge as well like, acting je ne sais quoi / Interpretation as once again crucial to this character (winston) existing at all. actor will roland being aware nd people exist and needn't be interpreted as Always Others / too [inaccuracy abt autistic ppl] to [be this character], see: bmc & the applicability re: jeremy, the similarities re: jeremy & winston & "it's organic aba" and [that applies all over the place when it's like, well other people just need to learn & choose to be better, and if some of them can't, oh well, not my fault, no big deal, nothing to be done: which all justifies Whatever's Already Happening that absolutely doesn't need to change um it's everyone else who needs to change]....that also, despite the [clapping and cheering whenever one can note/observe some Acting Choice for winston that probably nobody told him to put in, in addition to that general permeating Performance (insert michael greif talking abt will's skillset can land a whole lot of things while creating a completely realistic believable sophisticated complicated character and he can refine define and illuminate a point)], it's still like, not just some Extra bonus thing added in the background to at least bother to show winston's reactions when any & everyone around him shits on him, b/c you do At Least have to like, devote a seperate Shot to that, and then edit it in, or they Do when it isn't in fact just happening out of focus off to the side as the scene continues w/o any attention called to it. not that this isn't again perhaps just in those bounds of Having It Both Ways like "welllllll yeah sucks for him & ppl are being mean. but also in normal ways & it's nbd Really" like, not like we've ever seen winston's constant torment resulting in consequences anyone else has to deal with. really my grandest [idk. it's feasible] is there's just this gradual shift no attention is drawn to where winston seeks out / prefers talking w/tuk, and/or stops trying to actively appeal to / expect anything good from interactions w/rian lol, could go completely downhill at any moment. but ofc, s/o to how it could be Having It Both Ways like, winston and tuk, funny little guys, are friends, buuut also it Is cringe for either of them to not be getting organic aba from any exchange, & since ppl are rooting for tuk to become a winner, it's uh aggressive and wrong of winston to deprive tuk of that or even contradict it, like, god knows you don't tell someone they Are good enough / deserving now, you tell them they absolutely are not and if they don't wise up and look smart and act right they never will be

what could we end on but thinking about how winston is here for Taylor despite having experienced manifold disappointments from the start. and how he does want to kiss them so bad even if it's as [as yet not allowed] as anyone having a conversation that matters w/winston. and taylor comfortably giving winston that pat on the back. and winston and taylor's [one on one nonverbal cues / exchanges that are always successful in covertly being one on one And successful in being understood]. thinking about Winston Billions (autistic Character) and winston & taylor parallels & similarities and taylor being like "well, this is simply my funny little guy" and my being like right on and [same] to him so much it was like this surprise meta immersive/interactive experience watching those first season three clips that existed when we discovered it and The Dynamic / Acting / Characters. mafee being like "wow taylor why are you acting this way. so cold" in season four while winston, who we never saw obtaining info abt the arc at all, is like "um. b/c of they way they're feeling, duh" which is also like thrown into yet sharper relief when s6 has mafee crashing around like "wow taylor nofeelings mason huh. so cold" like get it together. unsurprising if you unknowingly write an autistic character and are like "idk, we just can't fully treat this person the same way others are....just Has to be a bit worse....and we don't have to question it much or at all maybe, i mean who even would think anything's off / wrong here" like yep just recreating ppl's interpretation of irl ppl they didn't Know were autistic either lol. ofc i'd be the butt of jokes tertiary unimportant rando largely off to the side & dismissed when it's time for anything that matters / is cared about after sharing some zany detail about my cringe life or feelings or personality or whatever, all If i go full tilt spontaneous / less filtered even, instead of silently being an extra who is written off to show the stakes for other characters or something lmao. shoutout to that tmc extra who looked over at winston in the season four finale like =) and shoutout to that also involving taylor looking over at winston like =) after he calls them baby. kiss about it why don't you

hehehe I'm so glad people are suddenly getting on the jamilmadburr train, I love this goddamn ship. I'm going to ramble on how I think these four function in a modern sense.

Alexander Hamilton :

-Revels in being the 2nd tallest

-regularly uses James or Aaron as a headrest

-literally flirted with every single one of them on sight, because they were fuckin hot, and he wanted some

-fought with them a lot because he felt that was the only way to get to know them

-owns several plants, but would kill all of them if not for Aaron

-can, will, and has thrown hands with anyone who disrespected his boyfriends.

-the weakest immune system next to James, and it kicks in during the cooler months

-Big spoon no matter what, just wants to hold them

-ADHD (projecting) and suffers from time blindness and ADHD paralysis frequently. He will go days without food or a shower simply because he forgot to

-haha, he either loves his work or hates it, no in between.

-hyperfixates on something for hours, and will accidentally ignore his boyfriends.

-he will then go lay on them and apologize until they shut him up

neurodivergence in abc’s lost

i’m gonna be listing off and talking about the canon neurodivergent characters in lost. i won’t be adding characters that i personally headcanon as neurodivergent in some way, what i’m writing here is elaboration upon what has been given to me by the show. please note that none of these people’s conditions or disorders were named in the show, so such diagnoses being named here are me taking that extra step based upon their symptoms

first of all i wanna point out that based on what i’ve seen the show, that the island’s healing powers applies to conditions inflicted upon the mind, not ones inherent to the mind. thats why daniel’s brain damage heals, but people like hurley and locke will always continue to have depression

hugo “hurley” reyes

schizophrenia and depression

our most prominently featured mentally ill character. it might seem bold to label him with schizophrenia when it’s never said that that’s what he has. but during his time on lost, he displays many of the symptoms: paranoia, pathological self loathing, delusions and hallucinations. now, it’s a fictionalized depiction of schizophrenia and that’s probably not even what the writers had in mind but it’s none the less a really, really good and respectful portrayal of it

it would take too long to list off all the times when hurley displays paranoia (heck, it’s easy not to notice how much its a part of his character) and self loathing. delusions? the situations regarding the numbers and his bad luck (canon never ever Proves what hurley believes to be true regarding that stuff)

they did an episode dedicated to hurley having hallucinations. a man named dave who drives him to self destructive behaviour, self hatred and attempted suicide. fun fact: when people with schizophrenia in real life have hallucinations, they tend towards just auditory. hurley gets visual as well as per Rule Of Drama. this is not a bad thing, just a narrative tool

(steering slightly into headcanon for a bit here but i personally ignore the dharma made Hurley Bird they revealed in the epilogue and just take hurley hearing that bird say his name as an auditory hallucination. for two reasons: one, hurley hearing/seeing things that don’t exist is already consistent with his mental state. and two, that bird literally, genuinely did not fucking say hurley)

extra notes

to be clear, in case there's confusion, hurley really does have magical powers. he can talk to dead people. that isn’t a delusion or hallucination. you can understand how confusing and distressing this must be for hurley

he's had a compulsive eating disorder since he was ten due to the pain of his father abandoning him. his struggle with this is well documented

at several points during the show he’s shown to have trouble spelling. he especially confuses his “y(s)” and “ies”. it’s not clear if this is due to poor education or a learning issue. or both, really. it’s safe to assume with him being poor, mexican and mentally ill, that school wasn’t easy for hurley

hurley has unjustifiably lived at mental health institutions on at least two occasions (the first time was against his will, second was volunteer)

john locke

depression

locke suffers from severe self esteem issues, and i know most lost characters do, but i mean to the point of irrational and destructive behaviour. he has an obsession with being deemed special in order to justify his existence. he also suffers jarring mood swings. (he can switch from calm and jovial to angry and defensive at the drop of a hat). when he was wheelchair bound, this threw him into a depression. when he failed to convince anybody to come back to the island, he attempted suicide. he would have gone thru with it too. he will go to extremes to make sure things stay the way he wants them to (killing an innocent woman so they can stay on the island, tying up and drugging boone so he won’t tell anybody about the hatch), and will fall into despair if he fails

also note that the things im saying about locke are not a comment on people with depression. i don’t think all depressed people kill and drug people. those were statements on locke’s character that i believe are a part of his mental state. my point is: he’s emotionally unstable and he tried to kill himself. and i think his extreme need for validation (from people and the universe in general) is especially concerning

to me, this all says to me that locke has clinical depression

locke isn’t as easy as the other people on this list to classify as Canon Neurodivergent but at least to me, i think it’s very obvious. like i feel bad being so vague but like, basically, watch any locke episode

daniel faraday

acquired brain damage, severe memory degradation as well as other neurodivergent behaviours (i’ll go into it)

he’s played by jeremy davies. enough said

okay, jokes aside. at some point in the past daniel and his assistant theresa were involved in some vaguely referred to time based experiments. while she was catatonicized, the accident left daniel severely brain damaged (also daniel spent years doing radioactive experiments without head protection, which would not have helped and indeed that is foreshadowing of this whole debacle)

apparently this left him in a state where he can no longer take care of himself, having been assigned a carer. his most outstanding symptom is that his ability to process short AND long term memory has been impaired

short term: he’s shown to have issues retaining memories from day to day. he wasn’t sure if he had met charles widmore already (he hadn’t). charles lays some exposition on him and when daniel asks why he’s telling him this, charles says, with sureness, that “because by tomorrow you won’t remember this”. counting on that to be an absolute fact seems silly to me but that does seem to the case. again, Rule Of Drama is in play here

long term: he can no longer access memories he formed many years ago, famously the memories he formed with desmond in 1996. all in all, this condition is highly plot convenient. can’t argue with results, really

no, i can keep going, i got more, this is daniel fucking faraday we’re talking about: his ability to remember 3 playing cards has been impaired (note that this is a skill most 4 year olds master), he forgot the secret code the science team were all taught and when he introduces himself to jack there is a long pause, in hindsight implying that daniel forgot his own name

like real life memory conditions, theres varying level to how much he does and doesn’t remember. he’s thankfully not in a 50 first dates situation and doesn’t forget everything day to day. clearly he remembers people if they’re around enough, like during his time on the boat. charlotte, miles, frank, naomi...

upon landing on the island, his memory slowly gets better (considering his condition beforehand, the fact that nobody comments on this is staggering)

when dan is fully healed? i could not say, i could theorize, but such things are nebulous. but still, the times we see dan without his brain damage, he still behaves like a neurodivergent person. just not like he was when he was brain damaged. he stims near constantly, has a tendency to repeat names and words (echolalia) and it’s shown that dan compulsively counts in his head. he counted up to 864 beats, if i remember correctly, which is about 10 minutes of counting in his head. by no stretch of the imagination is that neurotypical behaviour

(im not trying to sound defensive. and i don’t think anybody, anywhere, is arguing that daniel faraday is a neurotypical. unfathomable)

going into headcanon territory again, his ND traits, when not brain damaged, say to me that he’s autistic and/or has OCD and possibly anxiety. thats all theorizing on my part tho. but the fact of the matter is, damage or no, he’s neurodivergent

his apparent need for tactile sensory input is legendary in the lost fandom. in layman’s terms: him pet pet. not just people but objects too. humans, overall, tend to touch things to process input better. many ND people do it more, and it seems daniel is a case of that (i am not making a solid statement on jeremy davies’ neuro state. that’s his business)

libby was institutionalized (the same place hurley was sent to) and placed on medication (which seemed like sedatives to me, based on her expressions). in the show it’s not what clear what put her there, but having just done some research, i’ve discovered that Word Of God says that libby became mentally unstable after the death of her husband dave smith. so this is probably another case of trauma induced mental illness. she must have had a pretty extreme episode to cause her to be sent to a place like that. something to think about

but alas, it’s libby, so not much info. moving on

anti social behaviour disorder (is my best guess)

oof. depictions of mental illness with characters who are immoral are depictions of mental illness nonetheless. i feel almost silly saying this but: ben is not... okay

ben displays issues (at best) with empathy, compassion and morality. how much he cares about other people is highly debatable but one thing that's certain is that he does genuinely love his daughter. everybody else is ????

but the loving alex thing rules out him being a sociopath or having narcissistic personality disorder. and it is genuine because when he loses it with grief, it’s not a performance, because the only audience is us...

he’s a compulsive liar, lying even when it doesn’t benefit him. lying just because. ben is highly unpredictable, which isn’t inherently a neurodivergent thing, but when a person goes from a calm discussion to strangling somebody, all roads point to Uh Oh (i don’t know the technical terms for Uh Oh). many of his outward emotions are performed (the difference between his fake smiles and few real smiles is noticeable). he’s manipulative, he treats people like objects for his benefit/plans, he’s self absorbed, he has zero issues with murder unless it’s a child. he does have some moral standards. but overall, uh, [just gestures at ben]

also ben is repeatedly offended when other people don’t trust him, which is HILARIOUS, but also shows a cognitive dissonance on his part

charlie takes heroin as a form of self harm (that isn’t a theory on my part, it’s clear as day that charlie started taking it because his sense of self worth was so low that the drugs felt like the only option)

locke, hurley, (both as mentioned above), jack, desmond, michael and richard have all attempted/nearly commited suicide

so what can we conclude from this? well that's up to you, really. that i love lost a fuck ton? that the actors and writing in lost is amazing? that all the neurodivergent based depth got saved for the boys? yeah

but i wanna conclude with this: a part of what makes lost really special to me is that these people i’ve talked out here? they’ve suffered, and oh boy it was tasty suffering, but all of them, yes even libby, were more than suffering

these people have nuance. one way or another, these people (to varying degrees) were happy at times. silly. funny. angry. opinionated. they loved. they were loved. they lived and breathed as human beings. that means a lot to me

Valenwind but the Demons are Symbiotes.

This is my most recent head cannon of the valenwind ship. I had this idea after watching and getting into the venom fandom for a while and this idea came to me. Instead of the demons just being monsters determined to destroy Vincent or being representatives of different parts of his psyche, I decided to make them a race of beings of their own. That come in two types and come from the life stream.

Symbiotes, once they leave the life stream, need to either have a host to survive, or have been around long enough and become strong enough that they can form their own body.

Parasites are symbiotes that became predatory either to other symbiotes or to the hosts they inhabit and only consume them when they bond.

A symbiote can be both or go from one to the other and back if they choose too.

Chaos or Cass as he is called in my potential fic is the oldest and one of the strongest of the symbiotes in existence. He met Vincent when Vincent was a child and saved him from getting lost in the woods. In return, Vincent and his family gave him the resources to form a body and became Vincent's de-facto adopted brother and was with Vincent for most of his life. Until Hojo came in.

When Hojo came in he not only took Vincent but found Chaos as well and through much pain and trauma put Chaos into Vincent, bonding them together. But when he also tried to put Death Gigas and Hellmasker in, Chaos had to use nearly all of his strength to subdue them so they didn't kill Vincent and ended up giving birth to Galien Beast to protect Vincent while he went dormant to recover.

When the group first meets Galien, it’s when they meet the Materia Keeper in the mountains and she rips it a new one after it nearly kills the party. Unfortunately because of the fear the group shows off it makes Galien back away and act aggressively and they deem her dangerous.

When they meet Cid, he finds offense that nobody seems to introduce Vincent to him and takes it upon himself to Introduce himself to the man. Not scared of the man at all. A fact that interests Vincent since the rest of the group seems to be at the least wary of him.

When Galian comes out again, she backs up into a corner after killing the monsters and exhibits the same aggressive behavior from before. Cid see’s this and is the first to notice that she is just scared and yells at the rest of the group, “Put your fucking weapons away! It’s just scared and your making it Fucking worse!”

Cid, in a country boy fashion that includes several pieces of jerky, is able to gently calm her down and win her over. Proving to the group that she means no harm and is actually the sweetest werewolf creature on the planet.

Vincent is incredibly thankful and amazed and begins to trust the gruff pilot because of this.

When Death Gigas comes out, Cid reacts similarly as before but quickly realizes that Death Gigas is more like an angry child that is constantly overwhelmed by everything. Leaning more towards him being on the autistic spectrum in terms of mannerisms. Needs more research though. He is much harder to win over but eventually this one eventually at least lets Cid near him and later the rest of the group.

After this though Vincent starts feeling Hellmasker begin to stir and issues a warning to not just Cid but the group. He also fully explains the remaining two symbiotes to Cid, knowing what may be to come. It is the first time Cid has seen Vincent truly afraid of something.

Hellmasker, unlike the two they had met, is a manipulative psychopath and a parasite. He loves to destroy any hosts they are apart of by destroying thier lives first. Vincent knows that, as soon as he is able to take over, the group and most importantly Cid, would be in great danger.

And unfortunately, the only one strong enough to stop him was Chaos who was still laying dormant.

And just as expected, Hell masker starts to manipulate and pick at Vincent's mind as soon as he realized he is awake. He whispers into Vincent’s head about all the things wrong he has done, starts forcibly taking over to mess with the rest of the group, and then starts going after Cid once he figures out that Vincent had started to grow feelings for him.

However, during one of the conversations he has with Hell masker, he realizes that, for some strange reason, Hell masker only has knowledge of his memory form before he was locked away. Hell masker could still access Vincent's thoughts as he thought them but any attempt to search his memory from after that point Hell masker couldn’t get.

(Something about how traumatic the force bonding was when Hell masker was put in made it unable to completely connect to Vincent's mind. Still working on it.)

Once this is revealed Hell masker turns instead to Galian and Death gigas, attacking one and manipulating the other. In hopes he can become the only one left and take over Vincent completely in order to consume him.

After a time Vincent is rendered incapacitated by the fighting inside of his own body and the sounds of Galian and Death gigas trying to fight off the much stronger Hell masker.

The group watch the fight, much like Venom and Riot at the end of the movie, but sourcing form Vincent's open mouth. AS they watch Death gigas get consumed and Hell masker going after Galian they hear something seemingly bust open inside of Vincent.

(Think Vincent on his knees, head thrown back, mouth open, but from out of his mouth is a large gooey mass with multiple colors fighting each other floating above him.)

And another symbiote enters the fight. Right before the new symbiote starts ripping the other apart and consuming it, they hear “NO! How are you out?” “You attacked what is mine. I woke up.”

After the last two symbiotes sink back into Vincent he collapses and is rendered unconscious. However after a few moments, Vincent groans a bit, but a different voice comes out and instead of red eyes , the eyes are molten gold.

When Cid asks, “Vin, is that you?”

He hears, “Vincent Valentine isn’t available right now, please leave a message after the beep. BEEEEP.”

Chaos is proven to be a wise ass who swears at about the same rate as Cid does but talks more freely than Vincent about anything and everything. Not too mention how brutally honest he can be. It ruffles some feathers.

Especially when Cass takes over to give a few members of the group a few hard truths.

But Cid and Cass get along fabulously.

Chaos is also the hardest shipper of Cid and Vin and is the best friend rooting the two of them on.

non rp related have you ever had a family member discount your autism as no big deal? i have someone who dismisses it a lot or doesn't take it seriously and i don't know how to tell them that hurts

Hi! In short, yeah. Sadly, I think a lot of autistic folks have to deal with people like that. I have a family member who basically ignored that I’m autistic for the first nineteen years or so of my life (I got diagnosed young too, so that’s not an excuse. I’m in my early 20′s now) and essentially acted like it doesn’t exist, so he therefore never learnt how to help me or how my brains works, or why I do x, y, or z. He only seems more aware these days because I asked him to get assessed himself for my own peace of mind, and now it directly effects him, he cares. But he’s still very good at being ignorant and not giving, if I may say, a single fuck. My family seem to struggle with the middle ground between “We need to baby Pace because she’s autistic and mentally five” and “There’s nothing wrong with her, she doesn’t have anything, I won’t accommodate for her needs or try and learn and educate myself” - it’s either one or the other. My favourite thing ever is, when said male family member points out something about me that he deems weird, to deadpan something along the lines of “Yeah. It’s cause I’m autistic.” It tends to shut him up, lmao. But obviously these things can be very hurtful, and I feel like I’m in a place where I can’t educate these people in my life who make me feel shit about things I can’t help (I’m also dyspraxic, and the same applies there, y’know? If said family member makes fun of me for sometimes struggling with a key in a lock one more damn time, I’m gonna key his bloody car) or refuse to learn about my autism, but I’d love for anybody else who has to deal with it to be able to talk to these family members about it – mine has the emotional range of a stack of hay, so I know we’ll never talk about Feelings and such, and I feel like it’d be an easier thing to talk about if that weren’t the case. But I’ve never been able to, so I’m really sorry to say that I’m not too sure how you could approach it.

I think it depends on how close you are. A lot of the family members I have that are Like That live far away and I don’t have to deal with them very regularly, and I tend to just grin and bear it for the short spaces of time I have to see them. And then usually rant once they’re no longer around. But in my case, it’s because I know that they don’t really care if they’ve hurt my feelings? Whereas I’m hoping that in your case, they’d obviously care very much that their ignorance has hurt you and want to fix it, especially if you see them very regularly and/or live with them. And, like, the people closest to you dismissing that is really fucking shitty especially. It sucks if it’s anybody, but especially those close to you/immediate family.

I want to say it’d be as easy as being like “Hey, it actually is a big deal to me because x, y, z” or like “It’s a bit more than that because autism etc blah blah” but I fully get that that’s just not how life is sometimes. Especially! Because! A lot of us! Find! Communication! Difficult! And people don’t appreciate that enough. The amount of times I’ve finally said something to correct someone or point out they’re being crappy and it’s been met with “Well, you never said” Yeah, man! It’s the autism! You never fuckin’ asked, either! And I’m telling you now!

Anyway, I feel like we shouldn’t have to accept that there are just some people who are gonna be shit about it, but I have when it comes to my family, and I hope you don’t have to with yours. If you really value the relationship with them and you’re close, I’d really really recommend trying to talk to them next time they dismiss you or disregard the significance of something you do/say, but if you’re not close or don’t have to put up with their bullshit that regularly or they’re just a shitty person who might put you down further or just Not Get It, maybe save yourself the hassle if you have to. This really wasn’t helpful or at all eloquent but I also just want to add that you are so bloody valid, buddy. And I hope there’s other people around you who are less crappy. But if you wanna swing by with more Info, I can for sure try and help a little more, or even if it’s just reassuring to know that you’re not the only one? But tldr to actually answer your question: yep! All the time! And it sucks! And I dunno how to talk to people about it, either, I’m sorry!

Hell yeah!! I’m really glad you like them thank you!! A lot of my headcanons come from stuff I noticed while reading the stories to be honest. I’m gunna break this into two sections just so I don’t confuse myself, one about Holmes and one about Watson.

Watson headcanons

Okay so my headcanon that Watson is bi is pretty standared. He’s obviously attracted to women for example Mary, but the way he writes about Holmes is also extremely romantic. There’s barely a story where Watson isn’t talking about Holmes’ sparkling eyes, his lean figure, his expressive hands, his brilliant mind etc, so this one seemed to come pretty naturally.

As for Watson experiencing PTSD and depression, I feel that this can be seen quite early on in a Study in Scarlet when Watson says:

“I laughed at this cross-examination. “I keep abull pup,” I said, “and I object to rows becausemy nerves are shaken, and I get up at all sorts ofungodly hours, and I am extremely lazy. I haveanother set of vices when I’m well, but those arethe principal ones at present.”

Watson himself admits that he is unwell, and while he might be reffering to his physical health, the things he lists as his “flaws” seem to also imply some kind of mental health problems. Laziness could easily be a reference to the apathy and complete lack of energy that comes with depression, as could Watson rising at “ungodly hours.” If this is meant to mean late in the day (which I think it is, given that Watson mentions a few times that he’s a late riser) then again, it implies the apathy of depression. If it refers to Watson waking up at various points in the night this could be problems sleeping which come with both ptsd and depression.

“I object to rows because my nerves are shaken” to me implies ptsd following the terrible things Watson would have seen in the war, as does Watson saying earlier on in the same chapter that he’s had enough excitement to last a lifetime. Given what his experiences in Afghanistan were likely to have been, I think ptsd is a pretty reasonable assumption.

It’s also implied a couple of times in the books (Holmes’ keeps Watsons cheques locked away, Watson refers to spending a lot of money on the horses) that Watson has a gambling addiction, which again would point to him having mental health problems. The fact that the Richie films straight up gave Watson a gambling addiction is one of my fave things about them tbh.

Holmes headcanons

Okay so! My headcanon that Holmes is gay comes in part from his complete rejection of women. All throughout the stories Watson is constantly like “oh yeah and Holmes didn’t love women, he really didn’t have any attraction to women, gosh what an automaton because he didn’t find women pretty, have I mentioned recently that Holmes never once had any feelings anything like love towards a woman?” even in Scandal in Bohemia Holmes is shown to be impressed by Irene and have a lot of respect for her, but Watson once again emphasises that he had absolutely no romantic feelings for her.

On the other hand, the way Holmes interacts with Watson is very romantic. He holds his hand when they’re in dangerous situations, he’s constantly touching him for seemingly pointless reasons, he whispers in Watson’s ear, he watches him sleep, he wakes him up gently, and of course we have the infamous “qucik man, if you love me!” line in dying detective, and The Scene in the three garridebs. Also in Hound of the baskervilles, Holmes express worry about sending Watson to the moors and says that he’ll feel much better when Watson is safe at Baker Street again. For a man supposidly immune to the softer emotions, these all seem pretty loving and romantic to me, thus leading me to believe that while Holmes certainly never had any romantic feelings towards woman, he did have them towards men, and especially Watson.

I believe Holmes to be autistic due to his extreme focus on science and criminal law etc. I definitely think Holmes’ “single minded devotion” can be read as him having a special interest and fixating on it due to autism. Also, while Holmes is often very soft and understanding to people, he does sometimes interact with them in ways that seem strange and says the wrong thing. He sometimes snaps at Watson or insults his writing, but given the rest of Holmes’ character I find it hard to believe that these actions are outright malicious but rather coming from Holmes struggling to navigate social interactions and social queues, due to having autism.

And finally, Holmes as a trans man. There’s arguably less evidence for this one, but still enough that a few people have picked up and written theories on it. It’s obvious from the get go that Holmes is an extremely isolated person, other than Watson he doesn’t appear to have any close friends, barring maybe his interactions with Scotland Yard. Holmes has also cut all ties with his family except his brother, and even then it’s not until after years living together that he even lets Watson meet Mycroft. We, as readers, are never given any explanation for Holmes’ separation from, and silence about, his family. We’re not told if his parents are dead, or if he’s estranged from them. As previously touched upon, Holmes is constantly rejecting femininity, and is constantly disdainful of things deemed to be feminine. Despite this however he also seems to be isolated from most men. This to me, and others, seems to imply that Holmes is attempting to distance himself from femininity, and yet there his something (such as him being trans) which stops him from interacting with and fully fitting in among other men. Holmes’ separation from his family could also easily be as a result of Holmes being trans, and feeling the need to remove himself from people who perhaps wouldn’t except that, and who would dead name him and use the wrong pronouns.

The ways Watson describes Holmes can also support the idea that he’s trans. Throughout the stories Holmes is described as being slim, as having a relatively high pitched voice, as never having any facial hair and in fact having a “smooth face.” While it isn’t much, I think when considered with the previous points it deffo provides a solid foundation for headcanoning Holmes as a trans man.

Aaaah sorry this got super long and I probably didn’t make much sense, but I hope that explains why I have these headcanons!!!! If you have any more questions/want to chat about all of this I’d love to!!!

I have an autistic son, and I have decided he needs better hospital insurance than what he has (I have regular health insurance, but his hospital coverage is not great). So I applied for extra hospital insurance. Aside from being pretty severely autistic, he's physically a pretty healthy kid, no major problems, no ongoing treatment. However, recently he needed to have a dental procedure, and they decided it was best that it be done in the hospital, and that he be fully knocked out. A few years back, he also needed to be knocked out for an MRI (he had a seizure, but none since). Anesthesia is expensive, and when he had the dental procedure, it maxed out the hospital coverage on my current plan and I got stuck with a $9000 bill. Hence, the decision for better hospital insurance. When applying for health insurance, they do 5 year medical records check, and those two things are going to come up. What's going to happen... Expert: Anyone who cares for someone with a developmental disability, as well as for disabled people themselves [lives] every day in fear that their behavior will be misconstrued as suspicious, intoxicated or hostile by law enforcement. — Steve Silberman, The New York Times Life in the American police state is an endless series of don’ts delivered at the end of a loaded gun: don’t talk back to police officers, don’t even think about defending yourself against a SWAT team raid (of which there are 80,000 every year), don’t run when a cop is nearby lest you be mistaken for a fleeing criminal, don’t carry a cane lest it be mistaken for a gun, don’t expect privacy in public, don’t let your kids walk to the playground alone, don’t engage in nonviolent protest near where a government official might pass, don’t try to grow vegetables in your front yard, don’t play music for tips in a metro station, don’t feed whales, and on and on. Here’s another don’t to the add the growing list of things that could get you or a loved one tasered, shot or killed, especially if you are autistic, hearing impaired, mentally ill, elderly, suffer from dementia, disabled or have any other condition that might hinder your ability to understand, communicate or immediately comply with an order: don’t call the cops. Sometimes it’s dangerous enough calling the cops when you’re not contending with a disability. For instance, Justine Damond called 911 to report a disturbance and ended up dead after police dispatched to investigate instead shot the 40-year-old yoga instructor. Likewise, Carl Williams called 911 to report a robbery and ended up being shot by police, who mistook him for a robber in his own home. Unfortunately, the risks just skyrocket when a disability is involved. Nancy Schrock called 911 for help after her husband, Tom, who suffered with mental health issues, started stalking around the backyard, upending chairs and screaming about demons. Several times before, police had transported Tom to the hospital, where he was medicated and sent home after 72 hours. This time, Tom was tasered twice. He collapsed, lost consciousness and died. The Schrocks are not alone in this experience. Indeed, disabled individuals make up a third to half of all people killed by law enforcement officers. That’s according to a study by the Ruderman Family Foundation, which reports that “disabled individuals make up the majority of those killed in use-of-force cases that attract widespread attention. This is true both for cases deemed illegal or against policy and for those in which officers are ultimately fully exonerated… Many more disabled civilians experience non-lethal violence and abuse at the hands of law enforcement officers.” Trained to shoot first and ask questions later, police pose a risk to anyone with special needs whose disabilities may not be immediately apparent or require more finesse than the typical freeze-or-I’ll-shoot tactics employed by America’s police forces. For example, in South Carolina, police tasered an 86-year-old grandfather reportedly in the early stages of dementia, while he was jogging backwards away from them. Now this happened after Albert Chatfield led police on a car chase, running red lights and turning randomly. However, at the point that police chose to shock the old man with electric charges, he was out of the car, on his feet, and outnumbered by police officers much younger than him. In Georgia, campus police shot and killed a 21-year-old student who was suffering a mental health crisis. Scout Schultz was shot through the heart by campus police when he approached four of them late one night while holding a pocketknife, shouting “Shoot me!” Although police may have feared for their lives, the blade was still in its closed position. In Oklahoma, police shot and killed a 35-year-old deaf man seen holding a two-foot metal pipe on his front porch (he used the pipe to fend off stray dogs while walking). Despite the fact that witnesses warned police that Magdiel Sanchez couldn’t hear—and thus comply—with their shouted orders to drop the pipe and get on the ground, police shot the man when he was about 15 feet away from them. In Maryland, police (moonlighting as security guards) used extreme force to eject a 26-year-old man with Downs Syndrome and a low IQ from a movie theater after the man insisted on sitting through a second screening of a film. Autopsy results indicate that Ethan Saylor died of complications arising from asphyxiation, likely caused by a chokehold. In Florida, police armed with assault rifles fired three shots at a 27-year-old nonverbal, autistic man who was sitting on the ground, playing with a toy truck. Police missed the autistic man and instead shot his behavioral therapist, Charles Kinsey, who had been trying to get him back to his group home. The therapist, bleeding from a gunshot wound, was then handcuffed and left lying face down on the ground for 20 minutes. In Texas, police handcuffed, tasered and then used a baton to subdue a 7-year-old student who has severe ADHD and a mood disorder. With school counselors otherwise occupied, school officials called police and the child’s mother to assist after Yosio Lopez started banging his head on a wall. The police arrived first. In New Mexico, police tasered, then opened fire on a 38-year-old homeless man who suffered from schizophrenia, all in an attempt to get James Boyd to leave a makeshift campsite. Boyd’s death provoked a wave of protests over heavy-handed law enforcement tactics. In Ohio, police forcefully subdued a 37-year-old bipolar woman wearing only a nightgown in near-freezing temperatures who was neither armed, violent, intoxicated, nor suspected of criminal activity. After being slammed onto the sidewalk, handcuffed and left unconscious on the street, Tanisha Anderson died as a result of being restrained in a prone position. And in North Carolina, a state trooper shot and killed a 29-year-old deaf motorist after he failed to pull over during a traffic stop. Daniel K. Harris was shot after exiting his car, allegedly because the trooper feared he might be reaching for a weapon. These cases, and the hundreds—if not thousands—more that go undocumented every year speak to a crisis in policing when it comes to law enforcement’s failure to adequately assess, de-escalate and manage encounters with special needs or disabled individuals. While the research is relatively scant, what has been happening is telling. Over the course of six months, police shot and killed someone who was in mental crisis every 36 hours. Among 124 police killings analyzed by The Washington Post in which mental illness appeared to be a factor, “They were overwhelmingly men, more than half of them white. Nine in 10 were armed with some kind of weapon, and most died close to home.” But there were also important distinctions, reports the Post. “This group was more likely to wield a weapon less lethal than a firearm. Six had toy guns; 3 in 10 carried a blade, such as a knife or a machete — weapons that rarely prove deadly to police officers. According to data maintained by the FBI and other organizations, only three officers have been killed with an edged weapon in the past decade. Nearly a dozen of the mentally distraught people killed were military veterans, many of them suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of their service, according to police or family members. Another was a former California Highway Patrol officer who had been forced into retirement after enduring a severe beating during a traffic stop that left him suffering from depression and PTSD. And in 45 cases, police were called to help someone get medical treatment, or after the person had tried and failed to get treatment on his own.” The U.S. Supreme Court, as might be expected, has thus far continued to immunize police against charges of wrongdoing when it comes to use of force against those with a mental illness. In a 2015 ruling, the Court declared that police could not be sued for forcing their way into a mentally ill woman’s room at a group home and shooting her five times when she advanced on them with a knife. The justices did not address whether police must take special precautions when arresting mentally ill individuals. (The Americans with Disabilities Act requires “reasonable accommodations” for people with mental illnesses, which in this case might have been less confrontational tactics.) Where does this leave us? For starters, we need better police training across the board, but especially when it comes to de-escalation tactics and crisis intervention. A study by the National Institute of Mental Health found that CIT (Crisis Intervention Team)-trained officers made fewer arrests, used less force, and connected more people with mental-health services than their non-trained peers. As The Washington Post points out: “Although new recruits typically spend nearly 60 hours learning to handle a gun, according to a recent survey by the Police Executive Research Forum, they receive only eight hours of training to de-escalate tense situations and eight hours learning strategies for handling the mentally ill. Otherwise, police are taught to employ tactics that tend to be counterproductive in such encounters, experts said. For example, most officers are trained to seize control when dealing with an armed suspect, often through stern, shouted commands. But yelling and pointing guns is ‘like pouring gasoline on a fire when you do that with the mentally ill,’ said Ron Honberg, policy director with the National Alliance on Mental Illness.” Second, police need to learn how to slow confrontations down, instead of ramping up the tension (and the noise). After Ethan Saylor’s death in Maryland, police recruits are now required to take a four-hour course in which they learn “de-escalation tactics” for dealing with disabled individuals: speak calmly, give space, be patient. One officer in charge of the Los Angeles Police Department’s “mental response teams” suggests that instead of rushing to take someone into custody, police should try to slow things down and persuade the person to come with them. Third, with all the questionable funds flowing to police departments these days, why not use some of those funds to establish what one disability-rights activist describes as “a 911-type number dedicated to handling mental-health emergencies, with community crisis-response teams at the ready rather than police officers.” In the end, while we need to make encounters with police officers safer for people with disabilities, what we really need is to make encounters with police safer for citizens across the board, no matter how they’re packaged.
