ok i need to vent about a trope in video games (mostly rpgs and visual novels) that i really don’t like, and want to talk about why a lot of games fail at it and give a few examples of how it succeeds. however to do so im going to spoil a shitton of games. so if you plan on playing any of the social sim persona games, the xenoblade trilogy, sea of stars, 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors, pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of sky, chrono trigger, the great ace attorney, or danganronpa 2 and 3 (the anime not the game), do not read this post. i will be spoiling all of them.

so what’s up with characters dying But Not Actually so much?? it’s gotten to the point where whenever a main character dies, i’m almost certain that there’s going to be some funny business to justify bringing them back. it kind of drives me nuts, and i wanna talk about why this plot point fails in so many games (and also a few where it works in my opinion because it CAN work).

to start, the xenoblade games, specifically 1 and 3. i think fiora’s death in xenoblade 1 was my first exposure to this trope and honestly i think it’s done alright. there’s a LOT of foreshadowing about the nature of the face units in the early game, and having her be turned into one makes complete sense. also she’s not the only character who’s presumed dead that ends up in a face unit, so the concept feels more complete than just an excuse to bring back a main character. the main problem with fiora is more that her character pre-death is so much better than post-death, but that’s less to do with the resurrection and more just me disagreeing with the direction they take her character. overall this game gets a pass from me, not a bad use of the trope.

xenoblade 3 however i will not be so kind to. mio’s fakeout death fucking sucks and it ruined one of my favorite characters up to that point. they build up the fact that mio is dying all game, it’s a huge part of her character. the existentialism of it all was so compelling to me, i was excited to see where it was going to go. but the body swap with m during the prison sequence was so underwhelming it hurts. it is mildly foreshadowed in the fight against m, but it still felt like they sidestepped the conflict entirely because they didn’t have the guts to actually follow through on what they had set up. which, to be fair, this would be fine if they actually explored how she felt about living when she was supposed to die, but they don’t. this is pretty much the last major character moment for mio all game, and it was so disappointing to me. not a good use of the trope at all.

persona 3 (portable) and 4 use this trope too and it’s also pretty rough. shinjiro’s death is a big moment in persona 3, and saving him in portable feels super underdeveloped and feels like it was just used for fanservice at the end of the day. nanako’s death in persona 4 is almost insultingly underdeveloped too, it feels like it only happens because they needed to add extra tension during the climax of the game, when it would’ve worked perfectly fine if she was just severely injured in my opinion. having her die and come back just feels cheap and unearned.

persona 5 does it much better with akechi in my opinion but that’s also because him coming back is pretty much a mirage. the only reason he comes back in the third semester is because maruki thought him being back would be part of joker’s ideal reality, and once maruki is defeated akechi goes away too. it’s all pretty fantastic, and the way they explore akechi’s feelings about the whole situation is great too. of course, there is the moment at the ending where you seem him through the window but that’s left purposefully ambiguous and i choose to believe it’s just joker’s imagination lol.

chrono trigger is probably one of the oldest examples of this trope and it didn’t really bother me, but that’s mostly because i wasn’t super attached to crono in the first place cuz he doesn’t have much going for him in terms of characterization lol. i also think that because there are multiple endings including one where he doesn’t come back (and you really have to go out of your way to bring him back) makes it feel a bit less cheap? i don’t know, i don’t really have a strong opinion one way or the other for this case.

now sea of stars i’ve gone on record saying i adore, but i still don’t love how they handle garl’s resurrection. it feels almost identical to crono’s, and feels a bit too fanservicey for my liking especially since i thought garl’s death was so extremely well done. it’s cute, and i do love garl, but i prefer the regular ending where he doesn’t come back.

so… remember how all the characters in danganronpa 2 didn’t actually die? cuz they were in a simulation the whole time and it wasn’t a “you die in the game you die in real life” situation like they implied in the game? yeah that was weird. i don’t remember this bugging me a ton back in my danganronpa phase but like… the deaths in that game in particular were really well done for the series (let’s forget about chapter 3 for now) and having none of them matter in the end kind of sucks. it also doesn’t feel like that was the original vision since this reveal only happens in the danganronpa 3 anime and not in dr2, so it feels like it was probably done for fanservice more than anything.

these next two are ones i don’t think were too bad and that’s because they both happen and you kinda just know they’re not gone for good. kazuma from great ace attorney and snake from zero escape (999) both die so early and so suddenly after being set up to be seemingly important that you sort of just know they’re not gone for good, and if they were you’d probably be disappointed. also they both slap when they come back and their characters would probably feel incomplete without their reveal that they didn’t actually die. if you’re going to kill characters and bring them back, this is one of the better ways to do it in my opinion.

finally, this isn’t really a death but it still really bothered me. i really don’t like the ending of pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of sky’s final special episode. for years i thought that once grovyle and dusknoir returned to the future and you and your partner save the world, they’re gone. that’s how the game sets it up. i’ve thought that’s how it was for years since i didn’t play sky until last year. learning that no, they save the world and all the pokemon from the future are fine actually was so… it just felt wrong. i feel like they didn’t want a sequence that grim to end the episode in a game made for children, but i was like 9 when i beat explorers of time/darkness the first time and i understood the implications of what happened. learning that wasn’t actually the case now that i’m an adult bothered me and i wish they had stuck to their guns.

so what’s the common thread here? well, the times where it doesn’t work are usually because it feels like fanservice or like the story didn’t justify it well enough. it feels like you’re being coddled almost, like don’t worry your blorbo is fine!! they’re still alive!!! and i hate that so much. stick to your guns!!! if you don’t have a damn good reason to bring back characters after they supposedly die, don’t bring them back. it usually feels wrong and hollow. look, in real life, people die (i know big shocker), and there’s nothing you can do about it. i’ve had people very close to me die, and while i would do anything to bring them back, that’s just not how it works. i know games are supposed to be escapism where you suspend your disbelief, but i don’t usually feel happy when characters i love die and come back. it just feels like mildly condescending wish fulfillment. i just wish authors would be more thoughtful about this kind of thing.

literally just me talking about edit stuff because im in a mood

these r what i would call like my base level of ingame edits (i dont reallyyyyyy count my cas screenshots as edits unless i spend an actual amount of time actually working on them rather than my usual blur+chromatic aberration+sharpen combo) theres usually very little? or like no actual basis in the characters "canon" or lore like its just done to make them look nice. right. or like its fun lighting practise for me really. theyre usually pretty simple in execution like in the two examples there its just plain yellow background for sunny and the neon cross for vin so i have to put a little extra oomf into it because the backgrounds are like not super detailed so theres less of an "interest" factor from that so the sims themselves have to look REALLY good to make up for it. the ones i end up happy with though usually look really dynamic so it balances out

so these are more sort of abstract edits to me bc they have a basis in the oc lore or themes or whatever and most of my ocs have at least one or two visual markers (in the examples lucari or even just ari specifically gets a fair amount of celestial/sky imagery, i handled the colours here a bit sloppily but its meant to be blue and purple which are ari and luca's text colours, heiya's emphasis being on her muscles and scars and the clouded solar eclipse, redacted gets a lot of water/reflective surfaces/birds/rainbow flares?? and also lightning but that isnt being used in this specific one and sunny gets a fair amount of fire/smoke stuff as well as emphasis on primary colours like his more blue toned edits r usually in his darker stages of his life while warmer yellows means more positive stuff, red usually is just for uhhh violence oriented stuff) and like none of these are Actually happening. right. redacted isnt actually ever in that position with that era of hair in the water with the birds and sunny was set on fire at 13 not as an adult and they certainly never had a portrait of his family like that. but its symbolic, it means Something even if you as the viewer doesnt know it yet 😅 or ever aha

OKAY LOL I PRESSED POST BY ACCIDENT LOL but these are my full lore edits or something likr theyre totally rooted in the background of the ocs. like these are scenes from their lives for real. obviously i fiddle with lighting angle composition a tinyyyy bit to make for a more pleasing or dynamic image at the end but if my ocs all got dedicated like. movies or shows these would be ripped straight from the scene. i take creative liberties with some stuff but in essence these could be story posts (like the 3rd example with idris/redacted is literally in the story itself in one of the posts) the difference is usually amount of images in the post and orientation of said image/s. to me an edit stops being an edit when it has more than likeeeeee 4 images and then i will usually keep that bulk all in landscape or maybe one as portrait for emphasis. edits will be 4 or less and mostly in portrait because i want the less images to take up more room on the dash. the backgrounds for these will usually be way more complex like ill build a mini set or use existing sets for each one. i just think that ingame edits have a lot more capability than you might think (u dont have to go into blender for every little thing promise 🙌🏼) its just like. u can do a lot with this game i swearrrrrr just treat it like an art medium. im serious

ALSO the song almost always is sooo relevant to the edit i swear its not enough to sound good. i have to be unwell about it as well and it has to make sense with what im showing u

Hi i finished yttd and now i have to ask what exactly is the ai test idiots au? im very curious,,, from what i can tell its a sara ai? who became sentient? but idk abt the others lol im just oh so interested

ok so get this right.

the ai sims- aka where the percentages are from- were disrupted one day when a glitch happened, messing with everything going on in the facility. This happened when the sara ai won, causing her to achieve self-awareness! (Here’s a comic of what happened from red’s perspective kinda)

Before this event, the sims went pretty normally- one or two people winning and all the others dying. Noticeable patterns showed up though! The sara ai and keiji ai were pretty much nemeses, the sara ai killed the shin ai most times, and the anzu ai had a pretty decent win rate, particularly because of her rivalry with the sara ai. ‘PLEASE stop killing people’ ‘ermm.make me?’ You know.

The glitch that made the sara ai becoming self aware led to some other weird stuff happening though. For example the sim itself would glitch often leading to the ais themselves to get super corrupt for short periods of time. Very strange and unusual. Michiru was supervising all this but scientific curiosity was too much to make everything normal again.

Fun fact though !! The Sara ai ends up becoming a lot more different from the original, eventually becoming his whole own person entirely !! He goes by Red, originally a nickname from Michiru because of his eyes. He/it/bite little creature guy<3 the anzu ai clings to being ‘anzu’ longer though, since for a while getting back home because her family needed her was what kept her going. Eventually though, they accepted being an ai, picking out the name ‘Pierrot’ with Red’s help. The two of them won a lot of simulations together! Pier wins some alone too ofc but unlike red’s weird mother-son like relationship with Michiru, pierrot does not like her at all (here’s how they met)

Eventually the simulation is concluded and red gets put into a doll body (which is drastically customized- fangs and his red eyes. He cuts his hair a little bit too hehe) while Pierrot manages to get into the general system at asunaro. The two don’t see each other for a while because of this unfortunately but eventually they do reunite, pier just living in red’s (stolen) phone sometimes. <3

Red and Pier’s funny lil story goes in a few directions depending on things, they show up in a collaborative au between me and some friends (ai guys<3) and some other stuff, I wanna make a comic abt them eventually (the Pluto project..<3) but their ‘canon’ end is them living with the survivors of the death game!! Because. Red’s ass broke into the dg LOL. He was like ‘heyyyy emiri ^^ you know what would be funny..’ and she was like. ‘Get in there boy’. So red ends up hangin around and messing/hanging out with people!!! Like kai(here) and gin(here) but he and sara REALLY DO NOT GET ALONG!!!!

You see… Red is very jealous of Sara. Why did he have to be created just for her sake? How come she got homecooked meals and a family that loved her and friends and school and he had to live through hell every day?? Ofc sara’s life isn’t that great (her father is literally meister after all..) but red does not know that. Sara finds herself disturbed by red. This weird copy of her keeps running around causing trouble and insulting her to her face.. she thinks he was thrown in to make everyone trust her less or something. They’re so messed up…. After the death game though they hang out a lot. Make amends. I ljike them..

ERM YEAH THATS ALL OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD..!!! Also candy’s here sometimes she’s a cute pink girl who kills<3 (she also is an ai of shin who takes after midori… a lot. Because she was directly under his thumb and had to deal with him she began to associate violence and love until the two concepts totally overlapped in her mind. AND she’s trans!)

ok i know this question is refering to picking a specific media but i saw someone else answer it as what type of media and i think thats more interesting (partially because when i want to put characters in other media i just make a crossover, theres not really anything new for me to say in that aspect). so with that being said, put that gal in a video game. hatchetfield in general actually. tell me emma should not be the protagonist of a story-heavy indie horror game with one million different endings and easter eggs. maybe it would even be just a text based game. or maybe put her in a farm sim about weed.

And let me just tell you how proud I am of the way these jeans textures look. I make them all by myself and it honestly took so many months, so many efforts and tries before I've finally found the best way to make them look like actual jeans without being too "graphic" or realistic, so it would fit inside sims games.

Listen, I feel like I deserve a moment for me to say how cool I am ok haha. Because oh god, jeans textures stressed me so much, I can't even express, just look at one of my first tries in jeans.....

Anyway, I make jeans now through substance painter, by drawing and adjusting lots of different things. And you guessed it right! My pockets are done in ZBrush, it makes the process 10 times easier and ends up more "maxis-like" with less polygons.

#also baking textures for multiple layers is such a pain in the ass #and marvelous pockets create those layers #also it makes it harder to remesh and work in zbrush #so much pain for what? #pockets that people wont even notice?? #but look at that texture tho🤩 #im a sucker for small details #you either make yourself suffer till you make it perfect or you just dont start period #ALSO can i just tell you that ive passed my obstetrics exam today AND helped in the baby delivery process #tho the whole pregnancy and newborn thing scares me #this was a unique experience #ask #anonymous

its been a hot minute since i played but frm my memory: hes the original boyfriend for the girl you play as, who dies toward the end of august in a fire, and hes so sad and despressed and fucked up about it that he wishes so hard to bring you back that a god is like Holy Shit sir i am so sorry here let me help you and slings him into a reality where youre still alive. HOWEVER. he does not belong to those realities so the world is Actively Trying To Kill Him. and every time bc he doesnt Belong There youre dating someone else and he has to just kinda watch. and eventually he eats shit and dies and every time the god is like oh fuck oh shit brings him back and slings him into another reality to try again. rinse and repeat a bunch of times and eventually his brain literally splits into two in a desperate attempt at self preservation and this second half (called uraukyo) constantly is trying to kill you. this is because if You die, He will get to live since it makes room for him in that reality or something of that sort . and that makes omoteukyo really fuckin Stressed obviosuly because he loves you so dearly and trying to keep you alive is the reason hes doing this shit in the first place

so hes constantly trying to ensure you the player survive past the date youre supposed to die (becayse you are Destined To Die no matter what. the entire month of august the world is trying to kill you and hes saving you nearly every time and every time he does the world tries Even Harder to nerf you) and eventually the god runs out of power to send him to a new timeline. and is like ok. new plan. this is your Last Chance bozo i cant fuckin help anymore and sends him back in time in his original timeline before you die so he can try and save you

because if you can make it past august in his original timeline, you both get to live

its important to note that this entire time a spirit named orion is like Fused with your consiousness (you find out later this is meant to help protect you or smth, but even He doesnt know that) amd bc of this youve got No Fucking Clue about literally anhthing you have total memory loss and are just having to pretend its fine and you dont bc you and orion decide that you cant trust anyone and if you get sent to a hospital bc the memory loss is bc of Him itll only get Worse if you guys arent activrly out trying to revive it

also ukyo is totally aware of all of this bc orion is the helper of the god whos helping ukyo

ALSO he actively says he does not care if he seems creepy (bc he does a lot of things that make him seem stalkerish/like he knows too much, he warns you of upcoming events since he knows the world will try to kill you there, he knows your schedule and your friends bc again he used to Date You, etc etc its bc of the timeloop shit and all that) and he doesnt care if you hate him he just wants to ensure you live its so sad

I don't think about it a lot, and I'm not really heavily into shipping and such so bear with me,, going to sorta be looking at it from a general perspective (basically you asked the wrong person)

uumum going to start off with just talking about the first two questions at hand and seeing where I go from there throwing this under a read more for the time being just in case this gets long (assuming I read this over again this sentence should be gone,,)

mmm question of who! really good question actually.

1- jim: obvious answer is some sorta self insert type main character or whatever, but if it were to take place in the mansion that brings up another problem of how you would get said protag into the mansion (naming the protag Jim (gender neutral) for the time being) obviously you would have to mess with the story a lot for the dating sim in general (could just be one of the loops really) but you don’t really have an extra room sitting around for someone (i don’t think?? Unless there was one I missed)

BUT I have a proposal for jim that would solve this problem (however it would make new problems) jim could be like. Claire's friend that gets shoved into the story because i said so, and that would both solve the room issue and create a somewhat interesting dynamic with the heart itself (sory in advance if this ends up branching off from romance itself a bit im just here for goofy character dynamics 👍 also you could literally just shove in a room and this paragraph is irrelevant) however if jim were Claire's friend that would compromise your ability to romance her (not really honelsley but I like friendship)

2- jim again: ok lets say you shove in a room yay jim is fine they have a room. now a big issue with romancing the demons (if that was a thing. you wanted to do) is that! you presumably can't see them! sad. but! if we hand jim the heart however, BAM they can see demons. this would obviously require immense messing around with the story but jim seems to do that. (of course you could just let them see demons because you said so but where's the fun in that) ALSO this creates an even MORE interesting dynamic with the heart itself, and like tension or whatever. because obviously everyone is looking for the heart, but also you're sitting here romancing (I don't think that's a word and I've used it like twice. It's a word now.) the same people trying to kill you essentially. that's a bit goofy I think

3- someone in the cast: I do not have as many thoughts about this because it's relatively self explanatory how it would work I think,, this could also easily be made into scenario type things like the game itself with different main people to choose from

LOVES making lists and also excel sheets. makes lists of everything ranging from to-do lists to every single book she has ever read to all the lists she has ever written [she's just like me frfr]. usually reads at least 1 entire book every week, on top of the fact that they keep greendale alive. has all her books neatly organised in her bookshelf and finds it endearing whenever britta sneaks one of their own books in there. wanted to be an author when they grew up but preferred writing about mundane things instead of action and adventure so she realised they would never really be able to be one, still writes in her free time though.

First of all just generally I love the vibe of the pack. A few people have mentioned it having older Maxis energy and I’d have to agree it makes me feel a bit nostalgic :)

- YAWNING AT THE BEGINNING someone on twitter pointed this out but I hope it’s like an actual thing that happens now, at least sometimes. TS4 needs less things like tricks while cooking and more little touches like ts2 had, like sliding down banisters.

- Is sitting cross-legged like this new? Because I could have sworn before if they did their homework on the floor they’d just kneel and I HATEDDD it. Hope kids will be able to sit comfortably too.

- I hope we can direct them to sit on the floor now too I’d like that

- FINALLY A MORE NORMAL LOOKING CLOTHES RACK

- Lockers are cute and I’m excited to see how we can decorate them. Also the hairspray ... sims team said crunchy hair rights

- I know a lot of people hated the idea of active classes but as long as they fix only one sim being able to go at once...I like it i think it'll be cute. :) From what I understand w/ ts3 hopefully it won't be as boring since you could always just opt not to go. but sorry i think watching my sim write in their little notebook for an in-game hour is relaxing and cute. Hoping there will be some little interactions here and there like passing notes in class.

Looks like sims might be able to find/leave notes in their locker. Love that choker btw.

Also I’m SO glad the photobooth is returning.

- I love them being able to sit on their beds and do things omg ... like reeead FINALLY its so cute!!

- I’m glad we’re finally getting body hair and the shaving is cute. :) I’d assume and hope it’d be enabled for feminine sims, but I just hope we have some variations that’ll suit AFAB bodies or just less hairy sims in general. I messed around with the Saints Row reboot character creation recently and I was extremely disappointed to find out women could have body hair, but the only options were kind of extreme with full on chest and back hair. I literally have hormonal issues and I’m not even that fuzzy, not like there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s just like... We need more variation.

- i DID also notice the acne and there seems to be some variations! I just hope it’s an actual thing sims can end up with rather than a skin detail in CAS, and I’d like it honestly if adult sims could struggle w/ it too. I think it should be like TS2 where you’d have a chance of getting it if you let your hygiene get too low.

- Extremely happy about this CAS asset. I was just thinking the other day while making a hijabi sim that we need some t-shirts w/ sleeves.

- The window is Extra and I love it, along with the trellis. I kinda wish other windows were compatible w/ it too but it’s still a nice touch. 

- I have no strong feelings on the prom stuff. I think it’s nice sims can plan for it and apparently customize the promposals n stuff and that it’s customizable. Maybe I’ll have a bit of fun with it though since I never got to experience prom myself.

- PILLOW FIIIIIGHTS IM SO HAPPY

Now onto some stuff from the blog:

I wonder if it could be related to orientation/gender identity considering the trans flag being nearby the base game update, maybe the option to set preferences and come out or transition in some way? Just shooting at something based on that small detail. I’m also wondering when we’ll be getting this iterations version of chemistry since I feel like that was initially hinted at in MWS and there’s a little more of it in this trailer and people have been asking for it for years. And I mean, that’d also fit into an identity exploration theme and the “opportunity for discovery” wouldn’t it? As well as fit w/ the whole prom thing and high school relationships? Wishful thinking but hey

- “Successfully pranking other Sims will increase your mischief skill, but being discovered will have consequences on relationships, as well as lead to trust issues.” Guessing this will be a sentiment but I really hope if I have a sim that’s a bastard they’ll face like genuine REAL consequences for it. Not just an initial dip in levels. Imagine if a promposal or Actual proposal could be rejected because you couldn’t be trusted regardless of relationship, for example

- Despite my issues with how they decided to introduce “thrifting” in this pack, I hope it’s not just restricted to like, Thriftea, and that it’d also be easy for modders to do something neat with and integrate well w/ the retail system.

- Speaking of I kinda do want a get to work refresh so bad LMAO I want clothes shopping from ts2 back. Just add a switch to turn it off if people want CAS fully unlocked!!!

- They mentioned Science Fairs and that has me excited bc it could maybe just be like, a rabbit hole, but at the same time it sounds like a notable feature and we didn’t see it in the trailer at all. Hoping there’s a lot of little things like that to discover, even if they’re simple little rabbit holes.
