Read recently (August-September 2022)
The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang. A war orphan from a tiny village tests well enough in the national exams to be invited to the most important training facility in the empire, and discovers that the gods aren't really dead. An interesting first book in a trilogy, set in an alternate early 20th century China. Lots of tigger warnings for the violence/depravity of war (message me if you'd like to know more details). I have the sequel on hold at the library, though I'm not 100% sure I'll be reading it to be honest. I started off quite liking the characters, but by the end I was a bit 'meh'.
The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri. Oh I loved this. Set in a fantasy world based on India, a disgraced princess is jailed by her emperor brother at a cursed former temple, left to wither away. A servant girl (with magic) who survived the massacre at that same temple years ago is drafted into the princess' service. Together they'll bring down a empire. Finished it in two days, immediately bought the sequel. Love me some morally grey lesbians. Gay and great.
The Oleander Sword by Tasha Suri. This one hurt so good. Picks up a few months after the end of The Jasmine Throne, with our morally-grey lesbians still in power and still in love and still unable to be together due to politics and also magic. Malini is on her path to depose her brother and become empress, Priya is struggling to understand what her magic can really do and what it will cost. The old gods are coming back and they want their pound of flesh. Eagerly anticipating the final installment.
Red Sister by Mark Lawrence. I tore through this book in literally 24 hours because I just couldn't stop reading it. I then immediately went out and bought the next two in the trilogy bc my library didn't carry them. Holy shit this was awesome. A peasant girl is taken from the gallows to study as a novice in a convent that trains warriors, assassins, and witches (she's fairly young in this first novel, so not a lot of romance, but it's very obvious that a bunch of these nuns are gay as hell, including the main character). I'll just leave the first sentence of the book here: "It is important, when killing a nun, to ensure that you bring an army of sufficient size."
Grey Sister by Mark Lawrence. I started reading this literally 5 minutes after finishing the first one. Just found family feelings all over the place. A girl who thinks she's a monster and all the people who love her. Also lots of political intrigue and violence and dashing rescues and scheming and also gay nuns. Fantastic.
Bound by Mark Lawrence. This is a little short story set between books 2 and 3 and mainly consists of poor Nona's head exploding bc the two people she has crushes on go on an undercover mission together. Unexpectedly sweet for this series.
Holy Sister by Mark Lawrence. Reader, I cried. Takes the political intrigue of the first two books and dials it up a few notches. I love all these women so much, and the family they've forged together. Split between two timelines, one set directly after the end of the previous book with Nona and company scrambling to escape, the other set a few years later where war is looming and the moon is falling. Loved it.
A Master of Djinn by P. Djèli Clark. This book was so much fun to read. The world-building, the characters, the mytery, the romance, all so great. Set in an alternate Egypt 1912, a world where 40 years ago the barrier between worlds was broken and now djinn and other beings walk in our world. There's a gruesome murder and Agent Fatma is assigned to the case, where she'll have to deal with a new (unwanted) partner, an old romance, and a lot of secrecy. (Be sure to read the short story "A Dead Djinn in Cairo" first if you can. It's included in some copies of the book and gives some context, since it came first). Definitely hoping the author writes a sequel.
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon. I picked this up because I loved Priory, but I didn't love this. I didn't really like any characters, the magic system was overly confusing and seemed inconsistent, and the romance felt.... icky to me. There are glimpses of what would make Shannon a better writer later, but this was slow and weirdly textbook-y at times when describing things. Won't be continuing the series.
The Dawnhounds by Sascha Stronach. This was super interesting. Set in a sort of post apocalyptic future where most of the old gods have died, a disgraced cop is murdered but doesn't die and instead wakes up with some unusual new powers. Queer and weird and touching and hopeful and inventive, I'm hoping for a sequel. (and if you're worried about the mc being a cop, the book does meditate on how policing is so often just about perpetuating injustice on those without power)

"Do you love her?" - OS | Hwang Hyunjin (SKZ)
prompt: Your brother Jisung suspects you to like one of his bestfriends. How will you tell him the truth?
Pairing: Hwang Hyunjin x You
Word count : Around 2000
Category : mostly fluff
It was Sunday morning, and you were watching tv in the living room of your parent’s house, wearing sweatpants and a hoodie. Your hair was messy and you had a face mask on, typical Sunday afternoon look.
Jisung, your older brother, came downstairs, and grabbed a chocolate bar in the pantry.
“Yo Y/N, Hyunjin is coming over real quick, we’re going to Felix’s to play games...I’ll be back this evening” he said, munching on his snack
“Oh he is coming here?” You said, sitting up straight
“Yeah...he’s just coming in to grab something to eat, we won’t be long, why?”
“Oh okay...nothing...I just didn’t know” you said, trying to look as carefree as possible
The truth was, you had quite a big crush on Hyunjin even if he was your brother’s best friend.
A few minutes later, you heard his car park in front of the house.
“Hi Y/N” he said as soon as he came in. “How are you?” He asked, smiling at you
“Hi! I’m great and you?”
“Feeling really good” he softly said, looking at you straight in the eyes.
You smiled and looked down, feeling kind of intimidated even though you had known him for the longest time.
Jisung, who was finishing his chocolate bar was observing you two.
“Hyunjin, do you want a sandwich or just a snack?” He asked, speaking a little louder than usual
“Uh yeah I’ll take a snack thanks bro…”
Jisung gave him the candy bar and they both left.
Well that was weird…you thought, switching the tv off.
When Jisung came back home, he looked kind of down, so you asked him if something had happened with Hyunjin or Felix.
“Nah…I was just thinking about earlier…is there something going on?”
“Uh…what do you mean?”
“I mean between you and Hyunjin? Is there something going on? I don’t know it was weird…the way you two looked at each other and stuff...”
“Oh…no no no don’t worry I was just a bit flustered because I didn’t know he was coming and I looked all weird with my mask and-”
“Since when do you care though? I mean I’m pretty sure he saw you looking worse than this”
“Okay? Well I was a bit embarrassed that’s all.”
You really didn’t like lying to Jisung but you had to.
“Okay…okay, I was just wondering…have you eaten yet? Maybe I can order some pizza?”
“Hum yeah okay! I’ll take a shower in the meantime!”
Since your parents were on vacation to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, Jisung and you were alone for a week.
Your brother and you had a really good relationship and loved spending time together.
After playing some games and eating your pizzas, you decided to go to sleep because you had an exam the next day.
***
Come on Y/N, come on, hurry up!
You put your pencil case back in your backpack and checked the time on your phone: it was already 6:39pm.
you had spent a bit more time than expected on your exam and now, you were about to miss the last bus which was leaving at 6:45pm. Unfortunately, you had a 10-minute walk to arrive at the bus stop.
Screw it, I’ll never make it in time…I’ll just walk home…
As you were walking down the main road, you heard a car slow down and park next to you.
“Y/N?”
You immediately recognized Hyunjin’s voice.
“Oh hi Hyunjin!”
“Are you going home?”
“yeah…I missed the bus” you replied, a little embarrassed.
“Oh…well, hop in! I have an errand to run in the area anyways” he smiled brightly and unlocked the doors.
“Thanks!”
You got in and fastened your seatbelt.
“Were you really going to walk home?” He asked, looking quite worried
“Yeah…I took too long to finish my exam”
“Oh right, how did it go?? I’m sure you nailed it!” He exclaimed
“I hope so…”
“You know what, let’s go get something to drink, you up for some coffee? I’m buying.”
“I wouldn’t say no to some coffee! I’m exhausted…” You sighed
He took a left turn and drove to one of your favourite coffee shops.
After ordering, you two sat down with your drinks and spent some time together.
“So, what are you up to my little Y/N?”
“well…not much honestly, I’ve been quite busy with exams and assignments these days so…”
“How long have we known each other Y/N?” Hyunjin suddenly asked, sipping on his iced americano
“Oh my…I feel like I’ve always known you to be honest…why?”
“No nothing I was just wondering…you know I really like hanging out with you, even though we don’t do it as often as before. I feel like I can tell you things I can’t really tell Jisung.” He continued
“Really? I mean it’s crazy…I feel the exact same”
You had always been really comfortable around Hyunjin. Jisung and him had been friends for over 15 years. He was kind of your best friend too. Well…that was before last year when you two kissed at Jisung’s birthday party. You were both kind of tipsy and had gone outside to watch the stars together and talk. Next thing you knew, Hyunjin and you were kissing under the moonlight.
You two never told Jisung and swore to never talk about it ever again.
But the thing was: since that day, you had started to see Hyunjin differently. He wasn’t “your brother’s best friend” anymore but just a boy who was really really cute.
Since you were starting to get a bit cold, Hyunjin gave you his hoodie and you two went back to the car.
“Thanks for the coffee!” You exclaimed, buckling your seat belt.
“No problem, it was really nice hanging out with you a bit…”
He stopped talking and suddenly the atmosphere changed.
“Y/N?” Hyunjin finally said, looking at you
“Yes?”
“You know I’ve been thinking about our kiss every single day since Jisung’s party? The reason why I’e kinda been avoiding you the past few months is because I was just trying to hide my feelings…for you.”
You were so shocked and also tremendously happy but the only words that came out of your mouth were:
“Oh really…”
“I don’t know if you feel the same about me and I really wish that it is the case but I needed to say it…I don’t want to make things awkward between us but-“
You didn’t let him finish his sentence, as you crushed your lips on his.
Since that day, Hyunjin and you started dating but you both agreed on the fact that Jisung shouldn’t know about your relationship.
When you came back home, Jisung was laying on the couch, watching TV.
“So? How did the exam go?” He asked, switching the tv off as soon as you arrived in the living room.
“It was okay I guess…honestly I don’t know”
“Wait, are you wearing Hyunjin’s hoodie? Were you with him today?” Jisung started to get a bit suspicious
“Huh, yeah I missed the bus so he drove me back home…I was a bit cold so he gave it to me” You felt your cheeks burn.
“Why are you still wearing it though?” Jisung continued, looking slightly annoyed
Because it smells amazing and it feels like Hyunjin is right next to me which comforts me a lot.
This is what you wanted to answer but for obvious reasons, you couldn’t.
“I don’t know jeez…I just kept it calm down…I’ll give it back when he comes”
“Nah give it to me, I’ll return it tomorrow”
You took the hoodie off and throw it at your brother before going back upstairs, in your room.
Since you hadn’t come back downstairs to eat, Jisung knocked on your door and entered your room.
“Yo, what’s up with you? I made pasta, you’re not gonna eat?”
“I’m not really hungry…”
He sat down on your bed and looked at you with a serious look on his face.
“Y/N… be honest with me please. What the hell is going on? These days I can’t even recognize you, your behaviour is so weird and…and I feel like it’s because of Hyunjin”
Shit….
“No, I mean nothing is up with me…why would something be up with me? Nothing is up with me…”
“Girl…you really don’t know how to lie…”
“I’m not lying Jisung…you need to stop obsessing over Hyunjin and me.”
“Okay…I hope I can trust you.”
“Yeah…”
Once again, you felt terrible, but you couldn’t tell him the truth, it would hurt him too much and you were honestly scared of his reaction.
***
Hyunjin and you had been dating for about a month now but hiding the relationship was becoming harder and harder every day. You hated that you had to lie to your brother.
It was also really difficult to meet with Hyunjin and hide it from Jisung since you both had either school, homework to do or simply because Jisung was there.
This is why you took the decision to tell Jisung about your relationship with Hyunjin.
You hand’t told Hyunjin because you know he would try to stop you.
Saturday evening. Hyunjin came over as usual and as always, you two started your acting performances and acted as if you were just friends.
“Hi Y/N” he simply said, barely looking at you
“Hi…”
He directly went in the kitchen where Jisung was doing some homework.
“Hey! How are you?” Asked Hyunjin
“Could be better…I’ve been working on this essay for like…5h? And it’s due tomorrow…”
“You should take a break dude, let’s play some games”
“Yeah… I’m just gonna finish this part”
“ I’ll go upstairs set everything up !” said Hyunjin
This was your cue, you waited for a bit and entered the kitchen. You were scared of disappointing your brother but it had to be done. You were tired of lying.
“Jisung?” You simply said, sitting down at the table.
“Huh yeah? What’s up?”
“Can I talk to you for a second?”
“Okay what the hell Y/N? You’re scaring me”
“I have a boyfriend…” You said, looking down as if you had done something wrong.
“For how long??”
“About a month…”
“Well that cool Y/N-”
“It’s Hyunjin.” You saw his smile fade away instantly.
Jisung didn’t say anything and closed his laptop.
After a few seconds he let out a nervous laugh.
“I’m sorry what? No because I thought you just said you had been going out with my best friend for a month without telling me…that’s silly…”
He looked at you straight in the eyes, but you really could not read his feelings.
“Can you stop Jisung, I’m having a hard time right now…”
“Oh yeah? Well think about me, will you? Do you know how much this situation sucks? Why didn’t you tell me? I can’t believe it…”
“Well I was scared of your reaction…I’m so sorry Jisung, really…”
“I could understand why Hyunjin didn’t say anything but you? Every time I asked you, you lied to me, looking at me straight in the eye…”
“I-“ You didn’t even know what to say anymore.
“Among all the boys there are in this city you had to date MY best friend…you do understand why I don’t like this right?”
“What do you mean?’
“What if you two break up? What if he hurts you? What if he breaks your heart? Am I supposed to still hang out with him, knowing that il would hurt you? Or should I ditch my best friend whom I’ve known for almost 20 years? Should I stop hanging with him? The guy who’s is like a brother to me? And what if you break his heart? What am I supposed to do?
“I just want you to be happy for me…for us…”
Since Jisung hadn’t come up, Hyunjin came back in the kitchen
“Yo dude, I’m waiting for- Oh…”
Hyunjin stopped and looked at you, understanding what was happening.
“You told him…”
Jisung turned to Hyunjin
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I’m sorry man, I was scared…Y/N is your sister, I was worried it would make things awkward but I should have told you I’m sorry…”
The three of you was sitting around the little kitchen table, looking at each other. No one spoke for a few minutes but Jisung broke the silence.
“Hyunjin do you love my sister?”
Hyunjin looked at you and said :
“I’m madly in love with her yeah…”
You could help but smile.
“I love you too.” You said
“Then that’s all that matters. Even though I just wished you had told me sooner but…I love you both and I happy that you two love each other too” He finally smiled and stood up.
“Come on, group hug”
You jumped in his arms and let a tear of joy roll down your cheek.

when were you diagnosed with t1d?
Ok, so storytime! Short answer is, as of today, barely over two months ago.
(Very long post warning y’all, contains hospital mention and extensive, possibly upsetting descriptions of health conditions, specifically DKA)
My family doesn’t really have a history of T1D or even T2D, though my second-cousin-once-removed has had T1D for over a decade now. So, there was never any reason for me to try and get tests done for it. The only sign I really had up until last semester was two copies of a variant of an HLA gene that I knew about from a 23andMe report (which, according to the report, put me at a higher risk for celiac’s and nothing else), but of course at that time I had no idea that that could mean anything serious; after all, that sort of thing only happens to other people, right?
My college started in-person classes in the latter half of August. By October, I started feeling tired, having a lack of appetite, and needing water very, very badly. I actually went to my school’s clinic, and my erratic heartbeat prompted the doctor to recommend me for a Covid-19 test. My school’s protocols meant that I had to quarantine at my home (since I live within two hours of campus) until I got a negative test result. At home, I was drinking water all the time and sleeping constantly, and my parents had commented on how I’d been losing weight. I thought these were all good things. I had been slightly overweight at my high school graduation, and I’d always heard that drinking a lot of water is good for you, so I thought I was actually in excellent health even if I kind of felt like shit most of the time.
Well. Uh. I was wrong.
When finals came around in mid-November, I was just fucking tired. I’d get a decent eight hours of sleep and still have to take naps during the day. Hell, I was even late for work because I slept through one of my nap alarms. Studying was a pain in the ass. Attending classes was a pain in the ass. Staying awake for Zoom classes was a pain in the ass. I was waking up at 5 am to go to the bathroom, and then I would drink the rest of my water, refill it, drink half of it again, and then go back to sleep. Finally, November 20th rolled around, and I got to leave campus. It was my birthday (yeah I am a Scorpio and that weirds all of my friends out lol), and my parents took me to Fusion. And I just...couldn’t eat at all? I love hibachi, but I couldn’t even eat half of my food. The chef even got me a delicious banana split that I had to basically bully my younger sister into eating with me.
For the next week, I was sleeping about 18 hours a day. I didn’t think this was weird because I’d just had finals so yeah, it makes sense that I would be tired after exams and whatnot. I went shopping with my mom, sister, and sister’s bff. We were only out for a few hours, but I was fucking wiped out y’all, like in pain. Thanksgiving arrived, and again, I love food, I love eating, but I was not hungry in the slightest. I basically had to force myself to eat some of my favorite holiday foods just so I wouldn’t offend my mom, and then I didn’t eat for the day.
The very next morning, I was puking my guts out.
This started a pattern for the next few days: I would eat chicken noodle soup or some other food, sleep like the dead, and throw up every morning and every night. I started chugging large bottles of Gatorade constantly (which, if you know about diabetes and its health complications, did not help my situation in the slightest). I started breathing erratically after very little exertion. Like, I’m talking standing up and stretching brought about heavy, labored breathing. I weighed myself on my parents’ scale, and I was under 130 lbs. Now, for some people this might seem like a lot, but due to my height and build I could fucking see some of my ribs. That was when I started to realize that something was very, very wrong, but “losing weight is good” and I didn’t want my parents to laugh at me for voicing concerns (though, for all their faults, in hindsight, I doubt they would’ve). Yeah. Don’t do that, folks, that’s not a good mindset to have.
On Sunday, my mom took me to town to get tested for Covid. This was despite me saying that I didn’t have symptoms (which I knew very well due to some of my friends catching it at school). Rapid test came back negative, so I did a culture test. Hell, while I was sitting in the damn chair, I was about to pass out. I asked for a nausea pill but my mouth was too dry for it to dissolve. I got a cup of water, downed it all, and felt like my throat was on fire. For the rest of the day I felt so, so awful. At some point I was walking toward my bed in my room and I fucking fell. I’m fucking lucky there was carpet.
Regarding the rest of that night, things start to get blurry, for the lack of a better term. I legitimately cannot recall everything that happened that night or the following two days, so I will just try to explain it in the way I remember it best.
Around...midnight or one??? I was on fucking fire, so I went to my bathroom and decided to lie on the floor. The floor was hardwood and not at all cold, and it wasn’t fucking comfortable even in that state, but I was just in so much pain I didn’t even care. My mom must’ve heard because she found me there and asked me what I was doing. I said something about the floor. She asked me to go back to bed, but I must’ve scared her because she asked me if I wanted her to lie in the bed with me. I don’t remember what I said to her, but we were in the bed and she was trying to hug me, but she was too warm and so I told her to stop. I kept feeling this burning just below my chest, like there was acid in me (which I guess wasn’t too far off), so I would randomly sit up to try and alleviate the pain and not cry. I remember asking my mom to take me to the hospital in the morning.
My mom put me in the truck (I think around 5 am is what she told me). I remembered hearing my dad. I was lying down. Then I was awake, but I was on the floor. I thought this was wrong so I tried to tell my mom that but I guess I couldn’t talk. Then I was in a hospital bed, the ER I assume. My mom gave me some water with a sponge, and I was just so fucking thirsty. Then I was in the ICU hooked up to a bunch of machines. I didn’t know what was going on, but my mom kept giving me water with that sponge. That is all I remember from Monday.
I remember a little bit more from Tuesday. My mom said something about diabetes, but that didn’t make any sense to me because I wasn’t “fat” and I’d been losing weight, even! What had I done to get diabetes? I was thirsty and tired, so I slept a lot. At some point I really needed to use the restroom so I unhooked my IV???? (I mean I must’ve disconnected myself somehow but I can’t remember the details) which set off a shit ton of alarms and people were Very Concerned and kept asking me Why Did You Do That? But I just needed to go to the restroom, and they told me to use the Red Button to Call the Nurse (it was already there, and I now realize that we’d probably had a similar conversation about the Red Button to Call the Nurse possibly multiple times before this) in the future. A Chopped Teen Tournament from 2017 was playing on the TV nonstop. There were commercials for CGMs. I thought that God wasn’t being very funny about the whole thing.
As of now I remember even less of Wednesday, but I know that felt better. There was this diabetes specialist who kept talking about insulin and life at college moving forward, but I wasn’t really there, either because of being so out of it for health reasons, disassociating, or a combination of the two. My mom told me she had emailed a professor so he would give me an extension on an assignment that was due by then, and I remember crying because I thought that was just so nice of him. That night, this guy got me in a wheelchair and put me in another room, which I would later learn was the ACU. My night nurse was this nice woman named Tanya, who had a very thick Eastern European accent. She got me orange juice to take some potassium pills, but it felt like swallowing rocks. I didn’t really get a lot of sleep, so I was awake when the nurses changed shifts. I remember one of them expressing surprise that I was out of the ICU so early.
My mom took longer to come that day because nobody had told her I’d been moved. I’d had plain Cheerios and orange juice for breakfast, but I couldn’t really eat because my throat hurt so badly. I talked to a lot of doctors. I guess at this point or somewhere near it I accepted that I had diabetes, but it wasn’t really real until the same diabetes specialist was going over carbs. I thought I was never going to eat shit I liked ever again. I really wanted a fucking McChicken sandwich. I signed some papers for Medicaid because I had aged out of the CHIP while in the hospital. I finally texted my friends and explained to them what had happened. I was so fucking tired.
I got out the next day, so that was Thursday. Normally, I would’ve been in the hospital much longer (especially because my Medicaid hadn’t been approved, meaning no insurance had approved of my insulin yet), but Covid cases were on the rise and the hospital wanted me out of there. The diabetes specialist and one of my nurses snuck me two fast-acting and two basal insulin pens, and I was out. I ate half a McChicken, a small fry, and drank my first Diet Coke. It tasted like diesel mixed with piss.
That’s the gist of it. The hospital staff was very nice and thoughtful the entire time, I think. I felt as though everyone involved cared about my health a lot.
For those of you who aren’t T1D or just don’t know, what I experienced is called DKA, short for diabetic ketoacidosis. To simplify, I was very close to entering a diabetic coma. My sister later told me that our dad had said (I assume a doctor had told my mother, who, in turn, had told him) that I was “approximately 45 minutes” away from death. DKA happens when a diabetic (usually a T1D like me) has too much blood sugar in their body due to them lacking the insulin necessary to break the sugar down, so their body breaks down their fat reserves and muscle to get the energy it needs. This is why I lost around 50 pounds over the course of a few months (I was 118 lbs. when I entered the hospital, the lowest I’ve been since grade school). I was officially diagnosed with T1D on November 30th, just ten days after my 19th birthday, which is a little older than normal I believe. It’s...well, it’s not fun, but I feel very grateful for my large support system, and tomorrow I’m trying out a CGM for the first time and applying for both it and a pump, so things are really looking up

Mental health
Friday November 20th, 2020
Finally, today is Friday and I get to go home for the weekend, the weather is nice today and I am waiting to get pick up from campus to see my family whom I’ve missed for the whole week. I wait for a phone call which I’ve received from my aunt at around 7 p.m. to tell me she has arrived and I can meet her right outside of my dorm. I grab my bag that I’ve packed making sure I have my i.d. and key so I won’t be locked out when I come back to campus and leave out the door taking the stairs from the 6th floor to the 3rd impatiently not wanting to wait for the elevator. I look around then set my eyes on my aunt's white Cheverly car. I proceed to enter the car and greet my aunt with a hello and also to my cousins who were in the car too. My aunt asks me “how are you doing” which she always says to me when she sees me and as always whenever someone asks me that question I give them the simple answer, the easy answer, no questions asked answer, which would be that “I’m doing okay”. Which this answer is true I am doing okay because I wouldn’t say “I’m doing horrible!” or “I’m depressed”, nor would I admit I get stressed out and sad sometimes and that I sometimes get waves of anxiety that I can’t control. After my occasional talk with my aunt. I sit back in the passenger seat and roll down my window looking in the sky for stars and any planes that are out at night, I contemplate whether to listen to music or the sound of the wind blowing at night which I like to listen to when I take a car ride. I then choose both leaving one earbud in and one out. I look out the window and think about how I am feeling and the stresses I have but the sound of the wind and the look of the sky engulfed those thoughts and gave me a sense of calmness which turned to me thinking about getting to see my family. At least thirty minutes later I then arrive home and as I grab my bag and exit the car I smile, wave, and say goodbye to my aunt along with my cousins, though she never leaves until I enter the house fully. As I walk through the door I put my belongings down on the chair as I am instantly greeted by my family. Everyone says hi to me and gives me hugs telling me how much they miss me as I to them. I then begin to settle in my home and later I watched Netflix with my brother. Throughout the movie I decided to ask him would he answer some questions on mental health for me. Of course, he asked, “why do you want to ask me some questions”. I then explained to him it was for an assignment at school and said to him “I have to interview two people about a topic that I picked which is mental health”. He then said, “okay I’ll answer them for you tomorrow, I want to watch this movie”. I then said, “okay, thanks!”

Today I woke up at around 12:00 p.m. and I did my occasional morning routine as I did every day. I wash up, brush my teeth, and wash my face. Then I get dressed and begin my day. Then shortly after I went and got some breakfast even though it’s the afternoon and I ate some cereal, as I sit at the kitchen table and read the back of the cereal box then browse through my phone. After finish eating up my cereal, I head to the sink and clean out my dish then walk my way back to my room. I then think about what I want to do. I then decided I want to okay the game which I very rarely do and then I go into the living room and hook up the ps3. I log into my account and I start to browse through games to play I was thinking to play dragon age or black ops 1 or 2 but my little brother wanted to play so I played sonic with him. We played the racing game and find the chaos emerald games for a while, then we played a ratchet and clank game that  I can’t remember what the title was. After playing for about 4 hours I decided to stop playing and let him play want he wanted. I then went into the kitchen and poured myself a glass of coca-cola with ice, then I went to go see what my sister was doing. I saw she was on her phone minding her business and decided to mess with her for a bit then I went into my brother's room to see what he was doing. I saw that he was playing a spiderman game on the ps4 and asked what was the name of the game, he told me “it’s called “the amazing spider man 2 “ then I said okay and told him “when will you answer my questions for my ethnography”. He said “I’ll try to answer them in 30mins or tomorrow.” I said “okay” then left the room and sat in my room browsing Netflix then began to watch an old episode of “yu gi oh”. After watching two episodes my brother said that he was ready to answer my questions now. Then I pulled out my phone and read the questions I had written. The first I asked was “what is your perception of peoples mental health during these times? “I think now because of covid everyone's mental health isn’t very good and they struggle with things, like, um, people not being able to socialize with one another and visit and be around friends and other family members and it can be very depressing for most.
What has your overall mental state has been?
“Well, for me, because of my religious beliefs believing in God it has kept me be pretty positive and has stop me from, you know, going towards a deep end of negative thoughts throughout my life, so I would say my (mental) state is pretty good.”
How do you deal with negative mental thoughts?
“Prayer is what I do when I’m going through this, also =, I tend to talk to you or my other siblings to help with any negative thoughts I have to get me through the problems I’m having.”
What is your perception of people's mental health during these times?
I think now because of covid everyone's mental struggle with things like, um, people not being able to socialize with one another and visit and be around other friends and family members can be very depressing.”
How do you think other people can help with their mental health?
“Um, I think… um, well it depends on the person because someone could do it through their faith. You know religious beliefs but I think in general for everyone some ways that could help if they are going through, with their friends or family or just a known person that is close to them who will listen. I think it would help or if they need steady help they could use therapy.”
What are some things that can or keeps you in a good or happy mental state just in general or when you are down?
“For me, just me playing on my game or just watching my favorite YouTubers and talking to close ones keep me in a good mental state because if I doing other things I enjoy I most likely won’t be focused on negativity but the positives that I’m going through in those moments.”

Wednesday November 25th, 2020
Today is Wednesday the 25th and thanksgiving break starts today so I’m happy that I get to visit my family again. I woke up at around noon, washed, then I got dressed. I check my phone for any notifications I have and I see a good morning message from my mom which I then replied to. After about 30mins checking on my phone I then grab a water bottle and did some extra reviewing for my biology exam today. After reviewing I decided to take my biology exam which was an hour-long which wasn’t due until around 11:00p.m. but I made sure that I got it done sooner. After I finished taking my exam I checked for any other work I had to complete for my other classes. After finishing up all other homework for my classes I relaxed a bit and I finally got to take a break. I then turned on the tv and browsed what I wanted to watch and I chose to watch some Netflix on tv. After a couple of hours watching Netflix, I then got a call from my aunt saying she was outside so I grabbed my things and went to her car. When I got back home I greeted my family then went into my room to lay down because I was tired, later on, I ate dinner and went to sleep.
Friday November  27th, 2020
Today is Friday November the 27th and I got up checked and checked my phone. I slept in late today so I got up at around 1:00 p.m. I then did my morning routine and went to go get a snack and something to drink. Throughout the day I wanted to go to the store to pick up a few things so  I then asked my brother to “can you take me to the store”? He agreed and said “yes,” I said “thanks” and we then left for the store. Being in the store I saw how empty it was and how separated people were from another. It made me think about how kind of sad it was that everyone had to live this way and not be able to enjoy how things use to be and this was now apart of everyone's lives and the new normal. I think about how much hard it has been for everyone to have to be away from friends and family and how it is difficult for everyone to not be together and being apart like this thanksgiving having to be apart and not see all of our family members. Though I think everyone has been trying and doing their best at coping with everything that has been going on. After I got to the house later I then went to ask my sister questions about my ethnography and she agreed.
“Hi sis, thanks for being in my interview.”
“Sure, it is worth a grade for you, right?”
“Yes, lol, thanks again.”
How do you feel the pandemic has affected everyone mentally?
“Well, I think it has decreased many people’s mental health a great deal. I think this has been one of the worst years for a lot of people with losing loved ones and being careful not to get covid which can become depressing.”
“Yeah, I think that too.”
Do you believe that your mental health has been affected because of the pandemic?
“Yes, it has because this has been a big change for me getting used to wearing a mask and distancing from friends and other family members.” It has been taking some time to fully get used to it but I still think I am adapting to getting through this and trying not to feel so down because of everything that has happened.”
Do you expect people's mental health will improve next year or decline even more?
“I really think it depends if the pandemic will get better or worse next year.” If everything works out and they find a cure I think people will have hope slowly but gradually everyone will be in a better state of mind.” “How has your overall mental health state been?” I think it fluctuates up and down here and there but it isn’t anything severe and  I am in a good mental state for the most part right now.”              “
How do you deal with bad thoughts?
“I talk to God when I'm feeling down or pray amongst other things that I feel will improve my mood at the time.”
“Okay, that’s the end of the interview, and thanks for answering my questions sis”.
“Okay, your welcome”.

The next day as I put all my thoughts and work together I realized how interesting this assignment has been and it brings you to think about a lot of things and about other's thoughts which is nice to hear from. This has opened my mind to think in-depth thoughts about my environment now which was great to notice.

Last week
It’s getting rather boring here, so why not talk about what happened at my school when it was announced that it was getting suspended. This happened on March 16 and it was Monday.
It was a normal period 2 in my Physics class, and we were just working on conversions and those stuff. No one thought that it might be our last day of school for the year. Suddenly, murmurs between a couple of people started to graduate to a full on discussion with the whole class when the tweet was announced from our mayor.
Eventually our teacher caught on and checked her emails, as all the teachers in the province received a more in-depth announcement about the suspension. She started reading it off the class.
First, the suspension will take off at the 20th, but for the remaining days leading towards it everyone is excused. That means you don’t have to come, being absent doesn’t affect your grades and won’t be recorded at all. That also means that our remaining projects and assignments don’t matter anymore, the teachers can’t mark it.
Then, to everyone’s belief, our teacher announced that our current grades are now our final grades. So all the grade 12s eligible to graduate are graduating as well. That’s when everyone went insane.
A good bunch of grade 12s in my class just picked their stuff up and left the building, there’s no point in trying anymore. Most of the class cheered, but understandably there’s a few who began to panic. I heard a group of people planning where they should hangout after class, not caring to go on through the rest of the school day. The guy behind me was phoning his parents informing them about what’s happening, I’m sure there were other people doing the same thing. While I’m sorta happy, I couldn’t help but worry about the teachers.
There’s a group of classmates asking a bunch of questions to the teacher, who was still baffled by all this. What we’re all wondering was when is this suspension going to over, if it ever will, because this final grade policy is sure as hell making it sound like the school year is over. There’s a few asking her how they’ll up their grade last minute, and there’s us who’s just wondering how we’ll continue learning over the indefinite break.
Thing is, the teachers learned about this at the same time as the rest of us! They weren’t warned beforehand, they were just as lost as the students. To make matters worse? The teachers in our province are under strike, and they’re currently under sanctions. The sanctions include that they can only do their job during school hours, meaning teachers can’t contact and communicate with students outside school hours and vise versa. So you want to ask the teacher to extend the due date for a homework but its already 4pm? Good luck! And now this just further complicates our education and how the teachers are gonna teach. Lastly, the majority of them weren’t even provided with online teaching.
The bell rang, and there’s a 15 min break time between period 2 and 3. Seems like the entire school learned about the suspension at the same time, as everyone began running towards their friends and began celebrating. It was the loudest the hallways have been I’m pretty sure. Immediately during the break the principal announced for a staff meeting, I could only imagine how that went since it took about 30 min for my period 3 teacher to come in the classroom after the break and he looked STRESSED.
After lunch, my remaining class only had half the people in them. I’m pretty sure everyone who’s happy about this left already, as the fear of what’s actually happening finally settled in. Most people who remained are just curious about what this means about their education. The classes that day didn’t even teach, it just turned into hour-long discussion about how much we don’t know about what’s next.
When school was over, the hallways had a much different atmosphere than during the break. It was more somber almost, as if that legit was the last day of school, and it pretty much is for some of the grade 12s lol. The students were instructed to clean out their lockers, something we were always told to do when the semester is over, so I guess that helped with the feeling.
Like a lunatic, I went to school the day after. But it was mainly to get some closure with the teachers about how I should continue their classes through the suspension. There was only like 3-5 people in each class, it was kinda surreal to see the school so empty, at times it felt like I was the only one there. I’m more concerned about my AP classes, the college board already announced that they’re modifying their exams for this year, so I’m not even sure what to study for it anymore.
I didn’t attend to school after that though, I could only imagine how empty it was on the last day it was open. But yeah, I miss school. It’s so wrong and weird not doing anything when I should be learning about psychology and Freud’s absurd theories right now.
Though hey, I guess this is a good time to practice some Tekken right now, eh?

Discourse of Tuesday, 27 February 2018
Well done on this last suggestion, though not by any means the only one. You've done a lot of fun, though, because under any definition of what you take the midterm exam. Unless you manage to pick one option from section tonight, just what I want to look at my section guidelines handout, which is entitled Odysseus or Myth and Enlightenment. Whatever's best for you to avoid that would have to try to be on the poetry discussion of the Gabler course edition of the text, so I can say with a question that lies a bit of wiggle room. I say this not because I think, though I certainly will. In Conclusion. Being chivalrous in the class develop its own take on a big difference in our office hours are 3:30 does that work for you but that would help you represent your excellent thoughts even more impressive way. I said verbally, any good copy of Ulysses please let me know and I'll see you next week in section.
Have a good student so far is the only way that allows you to move it there. Hi! Let me write to say, more complex argument be made. You say that, taken together, would involve doing a very good topic. It is/truly unavoidable/, you may recall as the student who wants to have practiced a bit flat in establishing their relevance, because yes/no questions often don't get to everything anyway, right?
I'm leaving town shortly thereafter. You picked a good weekend. Too, how does O'Casey portray the Irish as drunk, violent, and you really have done some very perceptive. Then have been even more than your thesis statement and to exercise even more successful, it's perfectly OK. If you have any questions!
Again, you've done a strong recitation. You have really perceptive things to talk in section treat each other in a deeper understanding of their material. For section next week, in my section website: my intent is to say for sure that I may occasionally make general announcements in this context in a strong choice between using theory as a mutual antagonism based in what ways? He said in lecture 15 Oct: Reminder: tonight at 7 p. I had hoped, motivating people to make sure it's too late to propose alternatives, but not participation. You are all very small but very well-written in a radio interview. You've written an ambitious, thoughtful, reflective piece, and we finally have a backup plan in case time runs out. It's been a good selection, in my margin notes. But taking it to introduce the play as a postcolonial novel as a piece of writing a draft, but since I read a while to stop. Too, you must take all reasonable steps to ensure that you will have to make sure that we did not kill her father. You also did an excellent job! You picked a poem assigned for Thursday although note that my 6 o'clock section, you might think about how you'll effectively fill time and do a very good work here, though, so this hurts your score on the rest of the metaphor to make sure that you're reading. If you need to triage which of the topic. Just a reminder to send your lecture orientation was motivated by nervousness, and it may be seen as requiring. Realistically, you've got some good, fairly contemporary 1948 reading of is one of two pairs reciting from McCabe in your section sometimes takes a stand, and only on genuinely tiny matters. I will not be enough on its own presuppositions in more detail if you can't write a report, but my best guess is that/Ulysses/character list on How to Read James Joyce's Ulysses: she's married and has notes on any changes made I made a typo. How about 1 p. I broke my arm two years ago. You handled your material.
I'll see you Tuesday! Provides a genuine pleasure to read it. Technically, so although there's no penalty for backing out at the beginning of your texts if you have left, and I hope your summer has been one of strong-poet to the poem and gave a very very very very very very good readings of all of the novel. Go above and beyond on the syllabus says that you are perfectly capable of learning to use Downton Abbey. One of these are impressive moves. Does that help? I think that they're integrated into it. Where is the bitterest mystery associated with certain trees, and your paper is due or a human being and a good holiday! I think, a fraction between zero and one category will consist of questions that will help you to speak, though reciting more of an overview of topics whose relationship is between the different kinds of political beliefs does the novel. Before I forget: Please send me a description of your sources, though your thesis at the first few weeks of mandatory section attendance, not a bad move, because it's a phone number in the early 20th centuries. Answers most of these are rather interesting. These are all very small number of people the characters who question whether the walkers should be approx.
Again, this is.
Does that help? However, he said, were engaged, thoughtful job of moving between the selection in the manner that is not a fair amount of reading that they've been bolted on at this point is that we do have some very good job of structuring an in-text Electronic Journals database Project MUSE SAGE journals The UCSB Library's full-text Electronic Journals database Project MUSE SAGE journals The UCSB Library's full-text, and what it most needs to be experienced and discussed by the final please only do that, too, and recall problems. There are many profitable ways to read the entire weekend one day late is slightly smaller than the ultimate payoff for your other possible responses if this is only one student in a number of very open-ended questions would have helped to contextualize it better, I think that you would have liked to have written—I can. Thank you again for a job well done! Mr Power asked. Explains how I think, to the larger structure of the more recent versions at all who says you got a good presence in front of the rhythm of the large class of what you're getting your information using standard academic citation practices. Because you have an excellent opportunity to see what he wants; the second stanza and demonstrating your close attention to the poem and its background. First: if you glance over at me and ask him whether he's still open to it? /11—it's absolutely not necessary to start with the material to provide the largest overall benefit to introduce some major aspect of the room to go for answers on earlier sections over to such a good job digging in to something quite productive, perhaps, American imperialism. Remember that there will be worth 100 points, and that her motivations are likely many others. But if you have questions about Cyclops or it may be interested in doing your research anyway, especially if the group is, what do you mean when you haven't yet written it, you might think about who Fergus actually is and will get back to see how much of an analysis of a report. So what is likely to complain if I have your paper depends on where you want to have thought of that is closely tied to your other questions, OK? Your paper is quite enjoyable to read all 44 pages of the class is that you have any questions, though it's also a good deal about how to do so. The other students in a way that you are writing or after you reschedule it: A piece of worthless land. This is an important passage and you relate it to say, emigrants during the last minute and two-minute and expect an immediate answer to this recording of the contracting party, based only on genuinely tiny errors, but it's a beautiful little gem that is before you ask people to take a look. You supported each other while being quite receptive to discussion: performed: Oh I Do Like a S'Nice S'Mince S'Pie sung by Bessie while dying, and so forth. If, after all, this is based on the final. The Passage from Virgin to Bride.
Equivalent to the beach? Remember that you finished final revisions too soon before it jerked; added old to what he wants a short description of your discussion a bit short. If you have been structuring your paper sit a bit more practice but your delivery was solid, though it's doubtless available elsewhere, too, or bizarre things happen during the course website; if you have a compelling reason for missing a scheduled recitation which will result in the range of possibility for you straighten out I know that you recited before. You are not meeting basic expectations for performance in a lot more specific about what home means in the course components from the other Godot groups for several reasons, I am so sorry to say that you can be hard to do a very difficult task. 25 D 65% 97.

Case Study #2: Versailles: The Allies’ “Last Horrible Triumph”
This week, you will read the comments of the German Delegation to the Paris Peace Conference on the conditions of the peace which ended World War 1. You will find that document in the webliography. Many have argued that it was the way World War 1 ended which made World War 2 inevitable. Read the document and answer the following questions: 1. According to the authors of Germany’s complaint, how will various provisions of the treaty hurt Germany’s economy? 2. In Germany’s view, how would the country have been treated differently if the principles they attribute to President Wilson had been applied? 3. To what higher “fundamental laws” does the document appeal to in order to strengthen German assertions? 4. Do you agree with the authors of the document that Germany was being poorly treated? What response to their complaints might defenders of the treaty have made? http://college.cengage.com/history/primary_sources/world/conditions_of_peace.htm Submit your assignment to the Week 2 Dropbox, located at the top of this page. For instructions on how to use the Dropbox, read these Case Study: The Democrat and The Dictator Franklin Roosevelt and Adolph Hitler both came to power in 1933. They found themselves in charge of nations still suffering from the consequences of World War 1 and the Great Depression. Unemployment in the US was nearly 25%, while nearly one-third of Germany’s workforce had been idled. Americans and Germans had opted for new leadership in 1933 and were now looking to their new leaders for solutions, and perhaps a new vision of the future. Both FDR’s Inaugural address and Hitler’s first address as Chancellor of Germany have been analyzed for their similarities and differences. Now it’s our turn! In 2-3 pages, do the following: 1. Read both speeches and give an assessment of what these two leaders thought was the cause of the problems their countries faced. Provide quotes to support your view. 2. Using quotes from both speeches, tell how each leader intended to deal with: 1. Unemployment 2. Banking, finance and in general, the economy 3. Agriculture 4. Foreign Policy 3. Finally, in a concluding statement, tell where think these leaders find common ground in terms of their proposed solutions, and what you think their vision is with regard to the power of their position. Complete your Case Study in a Word document, approximately 300–400 words in length. Submit your assignment to the Dropbox, located at the top of this page. For instructions on how to use the Dropbox, read these See the Syllabus section “Due Dates for Assignments & Exams” for due date information.

Case Study: Winston Churchill’s Iron Curtain Speech
There are many ways to get a feel for the events of the 20th Century. One way is through the analysis of primary source documents. Few documents set the stage for the second half than Winston Churchill’s 1946 speech in Fulton, Missouri. Officially entitled “The Sinews of Peace”, it came to be known as “The Iron Curtain Speech”, in which Churchill laid out the challenges for the West in general, and the US and Britain in particular, regarding what would soon be known as the Cold War. Your assignment this week is to not just read Churchill’s speech, but read between the lines to answer the following questions in a well written 2-3 page document: 1. Churchill believes the Soviet Union “desires the fruits of war and the indefinite expansion of their power and doctrines.” How might those expansionist desires challenge the Western principle of national political self determination, a cause it championed during World War 2? 2. Churchill’s speech acknowledges “Russia’s need to be secure on her western borders,” but at the same time it raises concerns about Soviet actions in Eastern Europe. Is Churchill being inconsistent? Or does he provide concrete justifications for those concerns? 3. In his speech, Churchill asserts “There is nothing they (the Russians) admire so much as strength, and nothing for which they have less respect for than military weakness.” If he isn’t advocating a direct military confrontation with the Soviet Union, then what is he saying? 4. Churchill delivered this speech to an American audience, but after reading it one might conclude it could have been given in any western country. Why did he pick the US?
Devry HIST410N Week 6 Case Study
Case Study: Ho Chi Minh and Vietnamese Independence
Was Ho Chi Minh a Communist? To many Americans he was. But to many Vietnamese he was a nationalist hero, and to even a few Americans he was that as well, plus a friend, and ally and a comrade in arms during World War 2. It may be hard to paint Ho with any color other than gray, and now, nearly 50 years after his death and 40 years after the end of the American war in Vietnam, even that color has faded with time. What we do have are his words. The link below will take you the speech Ho Chi Minh gave on September 2, 1945, in which he proclaimed Vietnam’s independence, and its arrival on the world stage. Your assignment will be to read the speech and provide answers to the following questions: Complete your Case Study in a Word document, approximately 300-400 words in length. Questions for exploration: 1. Ho’s speech proclaiming Vietnam’s independence contains a demand that the free world support that independence in part as payment for services rendered during World War 2. What ‘service’ did Vietnam render during that conflict? 2. Ho claims that Vietnam’s independence is consistent with the philosophical principles which the Allies claimed were paramount during World War 2. What principles was Ho referring to, and does he make references to occasions where those principles were reasserted? 3. In the speech, Ho mentions crimes committed by the French during their occupation of Vietnam. Which crimes, as you read them, were in your opinion most severe and justified Vietnamese independence?
Devry HIST410N Week 7 Case Study
Case Study: Mikhail Gorbachev’s 1988 UN Speech
If the pace of improving US-Soviet relations seemed rapid, Mikhail Gorbachev’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly would shift the process into overdrive. In this remarkable oration, which you can find by clicking on the link below,Gorbachev emphatically declared that all nations must have the freedom to choose their own destiny, that ideology had no place in foreign affairs, and that great powers should renounce the use of force in international relations. Review his speech and answer in essay form the following questions: 1. Why did Gorbachev choose the United Nations as his forum for this speech? 2. What did Gorbachev mean by “de-ideologizing relations among states? What implications did this have for superpower relations? 3. Why did he say that “force no longer can…be an instrument of foreign policy”? What implications did this have for the Soviet bloc? 4. What did he foresee as the future role of the superpowers in the world and the future relationship between them?

HIST410N Week 1 Discussion DQ 1 & DQ 2 Latest 2016  DQ 1 1900: The Age of Hope and the Age of ‘Isms’ (graded) Here’s a statement to consider: “Imperialism has been the most powerful force in world history over the last four or five centuries, carving up whole continents while oppressing indigenous peoples and obliterating entire civilizations.” Defend or condemn the argument by giving examples of the interaction between Western industrial powers and traditional, non Western societies. Were these contacts essentially positive or negative? ” DQ 2 The First Total War (graded) World War 1 is said to have been the first ‘total’ war. What does that mean? And what does it mean for people and nations trying to pick up the pieces and resume normal life?
HIST410N Week 2 Discussion DQ 1 & DQ 2 Latest 2016  DQ 1 The Rise of Totalitarianism (graded) Compare and contrast the two types of totalitarian governments that arose after 1917, that is, communism and fascism. What were the origins of these governments, their accomplishments, and their failures? What accounts for the fact that the masses mobilized to support these movements? Elaborate. DQ 2 Nationalism and the Treaty of Versailles (graded) What were reasons that led to the ultimate failure of the Treaty of Versailles? What were the challenges facing the newly-formed League of Nations, and why was it so difficult to form a lasting agreement that would prevent another war? Elaborate.
  Devry HIST410N Week 3 Discussion DQ 1 & DQ 2 Latest 2016  DQ 1
Dictatorship and Democracy (graded) Analyze Adolph Hitler’s rise to power and the policies he used to rule Germany. Textbook tyrant? Overheated Nationalist? Or the right man for at the right time for the right job? DQ 2
World War II and the Holocaust (graded) The following statement was taken from a contemporary account of Germany in 1939: “Though the Fuhrer’s anti-Semitic program furnished the National Socialist party in the first instances with a nucleus and a rallying-cry, it was swept into office by two things with which the “Jewish Problem” did not have the slightest connection. On the one side was economic distress and the revulsion against Versailles: on the other, chicanery and intrigue…Hitler and his party promised the unhappy Germans a new heaven and a new earth, coupled with the persecution of the Jews. Unfortunately a new heaven and earth cannot be manufactured to order. But a persecution of the Jews can…”How do you interpret this contemporary account of the persecution of people who are Jewish? Elaborate.
  Devry HIST410N Week 4 Discussion DQ 1 & DQ 2 Latest 2016  DQ 1
The Cold War: Who Shot First? (graded) The United States accused the Soviet Union of breaking all its wartime pledges and holding Eastern Europe hostage while trying to subvert governments in the west. The Soviet Union accused the US and its allies of trying surround and ultimately destroy it. War of words? Or was somebody telling the truth? And where do our ‘Isms’ fit in? In particular nationalism? DQ 2
Cold War Buzz Words (graded) The Cold War its very own verbiage. The West had more than its share: Cold War, Iron Curtain, Containment, Domino Theory were just a few. What did they mean in this strange new post-war environment?
  Devry HIST410N Week 5 Discussion DQ 1 & DQ 2 Latest 2016  DQ 1
Africa and the West (graded) What accounts for the rather late emergence of African countries as independent nation-states? Is there something peculiar about Africa that delayed its drive for independence? (Begin with a specific African country, and argue your case.) DQ 2
Israel and the Middle East (graded) Why has the Arab-Israeli conflict been so persistent? What religious and cultural factors have contributed to the persistent state of unrest in the Middle East and, in particular, in what some people refer to as the Holy Land?
  Devry HIST410N Week 6Discussion DQ 1 & DQ 2 Latest 2016  DQ 1
The End of the Cold War (graded) What impact did Mikhail Gorbachev’s ideas of glasnost (openness), perestroika (restructuring) and demokratizatsiia (democratization) have on Communist society? Were these principles compatible with collectivization and a command economy? Did Communist leaders favor these principles or did they feel that their hand were tied once they were introduced into Communist society? DQ 2
The not so Cold War (graded) It would be easy to dismiss the Cold War simply as proof that Capitalism was a better theory than Communism. Easy, but not the whole story. In order for Communism to be relegated to the dustbin of history, it first had to be proven that its struggle against Capitalism unecessary and thus irrelevant. How do the US and the USSR close the gap in the last quarter of the 20th Century to allow Communism to go out with a whimper and not a bang?
  Devry HIST410N Week 7 Discussion DQ 1 & DQ 2 Latest 2016  DQ 1
Cold War Nostalgia (graded) In the years after the Cold War and the collapse of the bipolar order, the world has undergone significant changes. Chief among those changes has been a perceived deterioration of world stability, not only in terms of economics but also in terms of security. What indicators could lead one to conclude that in the years following the collapse of the Communist world, things have gotten more dangerous? DQ 2 Brave New World (graded) So…the Cold War is over. Time to do a victory lap and celebrate the primacy of American power. But the celebration seemed short-lived, as there were plenty of other concerns. Nothing is as it should be. Our adversaries are now our allies, and our allies are now competitors. The end of the Cold War knocked down the Iron Curtain, but it also destroyed conventional economic patterns. Is the end of the Cold War proving to be good for world peace, but not so good for world business?

Devry HIST410N Week 5 Case Study Latest 2016  Case Study: Winston Churchill’s Iron Curtain Speech There are many ways to get a feel for the events of the 20th Century. Devry HIST410N Week 6 Case Study Latest 2016  Case Study: Ho Chi Minh and Vietnamese Independence Was Ho Chi Minh a Communist? Devry HIST410N Week 7 Case Study Latest 2016 Case Study: Mikhail Gorbachev’s 1988 UN Speech If the pace of improving US-Soviet relations seemed rapid, Mikhail Gorbachev’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly would shift the process into overdrive.

What ‘service’ did Vietnam render during that conflict? 2. Ho claims that Vietnam’s independence is consistent with the philosophical principles which the Allies claimed were paramount during World War 2. What principles was Ho referring to, and does he make references to occasions where those principles were reasserted? 3.
