favorite thing about them

i said it before but i love tragedy. and Damien rlly embodies this so hard as someone so completely set out to fail- and so he did. we have this young boy with an incredibly powerful ability who 1.) cant get help from his parents 2.) doesn't have the resources to contact any organization who could help him control his abilities 3.) even if he did, chances are he would be taken in an used for experiments until the day he dies with little concern to his wellbeing. literally his only option is being self taught and- considering that his reality is literally distorted his ability, and his only other example to live a moral life is fucking books, it's a wonder he managed to come out as well as he did, and i say that acknowledging that he committed murder when he was 19. now enter: everyone giving him shit for using his ability when it's the one thing in his life he can rely on. now, i personally think Damien can learn to really control his ability, but just seeing him play the loneliest game of poker with the shit hand he's been dealt, it's delightful to see him spiral. muah. chef's kiss.

least favorite thing about them

that Lauren Shippen ended his arc right when it seemed like his character had finally reached a turning point comparable to when his parent's abandoned him. i cannot stress how much Damien and Chloe's final conversation filled my with so much hope. we see Damien do something idk if he's ever done in his life before: tell himself no for the betterment of another. he's so close to giving into his desire to see Mark, literally driving back to the city, yet seeing Chloe -a victim of him alone, not his ability(because it doesn't fucking work on her), him!- shames him and steers him back onto the path to good. it's such a wonderful moment and leads to all these great possibilities for his characters and.....that's it folks? i try not to rag on Shippen too hard but this really boils milk yknow

What was the last thing you spent money on? I got Angela and Reena cheese tarts. The reason behind it was Jin held a VLIve last Monday and he had been eating egg tarts during the stream; and because I was happy to have watched my first Jin live, I got my friends cheese tarts hahaha. I don’t know a lot of places that sells good egg tarts so I settled for cheese tarts instead, which I think are better anyway.

Is there a guy that knows a lot about you? I guess Hans? We personally don’t get to have a lot of heart-to-heart exchanges, but considering how Angela’s my greatest confidante I’m sure she has shared bits of my life to him, which I don’t mind.

Is there someone you just can’t imagine your life without? I don’t really like answering this question anymore because the people that I’ve declared ‘for keeps’ have faded out of my life at some point. I’m a lot more guarded and self-preservation-y when it comes to this now.

Pastor lies cheats and steals. He gets exactly what he deserves.

The cast

Pastor Bob (not real name). Contractor. Me, kaldra (or OP if you want)

Setup I have been a computer technician for more then 15 years. I have worked on all kinds of computers. Everything from tiny point of sale computers to large rack server computers.

I had been attending a new to me church. I was trying to date a women there this church was her idea. That relationship crashed and burned but that's a different story.

Now we can start

It was about 5 years ago. I had just sat through a long sermon about generosity and giving to those that need help. At the end of the sermon pastor Bob asked for an additional donation because the churches roof needed repairs. And it would cost $20,000 US dollars. that's right twenty thousand freedom dollars for a new roof.

After the service I'm talking to my date. Pastor Bob walks over to me. I say hi and he introduced himself we talk a bit. Pastor Bob asked what I do for a living. I tell him I'm a computer tech with a shop. As I'm telling him I have a gelling he already knows what I do. Pastor Bob asks me to have a look at his laptop. It's being very slow So I agree.

I turn the laptop on and I hear a clicking noise. This clues me in its probably the hard drive. But I can still access the data. This is a good thing it means I can probably recover the data. So I tell pastor Bob the hard drive is dying and it needs to be replaced. I also tell him I can probably recover the data. Pastor Bob asked how much it would cost to fix. I tell him for most people I would charge around $250. However I feel I can donate my time so I would just need $60 for a new hard drive. Pastor Bob agrees so I write up a invoice. New hard drive $60 labor $0, data recovery $0, and 2 to 4 days for repair. pastor Bob signed the invoice. So I take the laptop to my shop.

I open the laptop. HP why do you use so many screws and clips. I get the hard drive out and connect it to my recovery rig. I setup the recovery to clone a data to a new hard drive. But not the new one for the laptop. A high end storage drive. I go home after locking up the shop.

Next day Monday I open the shop and check the recovery rig. It's working but it will take at least 10 more hours. So I start work on the other tickets. Then at closing time I lock up and go home.

Next day Tuesday, I've had pastor Bob's laptop for 2 days. I open the shop and check my recovery rig. Good news recovery completed 100 percent data recovered. Report says hard drive developed to many bad sectors. Now I have a choice to make. I could put a 1 TB hard drive $60 or a 120 GB ssd $60. or I could pay some money myself for a 240 GB ssd $100. I decide why not and put the 240 GB ssd in the laptop. I then clone all the data over from the new recovery storage drive to the new 240 GB ssd. An hour later the clone is done. So I check everything the laptop works great and is exactly like how it was before the first hard drive died. Even the logins still worked. So I call pastor Bob and tell him his computer is done. He says that's great he will be here soon to get it.

About 45 minutes later pastor Bob walks in. I show him his laptop working and much faster. He loves it signs the pickup form. He then pays me with a check for $60. It's important he paid with a check. I do a bank run on Monday and Friday. So that Friday at the bank. I am informed that pastor Bob's check is void, what? Why? Pastor Bob had placed a stop payment on the check. So I call him he ignored my call.

I go to church on Sunday. Pastor Bob gives a sermon about not lying. I walk up to talk to him he avoids me. So I leave and decide I'm going to write it off. I spent $100 and some time to do something nice.

A few weeks later a customer walks in looking for a new computer. So I offer he a drink and go over his options. I'm chatting him up an he tells me he is a contractor he mostly does siding and roofing. He is thinking about offering solar. That's why he is getting a new computer. I ask how much does a new roof cost. He says up to about $10,000. So I ask him why would someone say $20,000. He had no idea. I thought it was strange. I asked about the church. Something about what the contractor said bugs me later. Why would pastor Bob lie and say $20,000 for a new roof. And why would he stiff me for $60. I then remember I never cleared the recovery rig storage drive. So I check and there it is pastor Bob's laptop data.

I look around it's slow and I'm all caught up on repair tickets. So I decided I'm going to clone pastor bobs data to a second laptop. I look around a bit. He had all of his logins stored in a folder on the desktop. Including his online dating logins. And online poker. Did I ever mention pastor Bob is married. I start printing his online dating messages. I look back and find pastor Bob had been adult hugging. several women from his online dating. he had been paying for his dates from the churches donation fund. I am getting angry now. Then I realize he had adult hugged the women I was dating when I was dating her.

It was then I decided to break pastor Bob. I printed out all his dating messages and the women he adult hugged. for the last 6 months except I refused to print the naughty pictures. It was an impressive packet. I then decide I need copies of the packet. So I order 100 packets printed from a major online printer. A few days later my order of revenge packets arrived. These revenge packets are amazing double sided. Staple bound, with a cover with pastor Bob's face on it.

Now the conclusion and I think it's worth it.

. This church had a calendar of what the sermon might be about a perfect Sunday was approaching. I go to church that a few Sundays later a bit late. Everyone is in the church so I put a revenge packet on each car. I have a few revenge packets that are in yellow envelopes. So I put them in the mail. I sent one to all the high ups In the church. and I sent a special packet with some of pastor Bob's naughty picks to pastor Bob's wife. I set the return address to the church. I also emailed a bunch of people the revenge packet from a burner email.

A couple weeks after I went back to that church. Pastor Bob was gone so was the wife. several of the women were also gone including the one I was dating. I asked one of the important people there. What happened? The answer was amazing. I was told about the revenge packet and how everyone had gotten one. The day my revenge packet appeared. The sermon pastor Bob had given was about the evils of adultery and cheating on your wife. Thank you church calendar.

The fallout

Pastor Bob was fired and shunned. Multiple women from the church have not returned including the one I was dating. Pastor Bob's wife is devorcing him. And she is the one that owned the house and cars. No longer pastor Bob is now being sued by several people including the one that fixed the roof. He never paid any of them. There was also rumors of a criminal case for embezzlement. No one has seen Bob in a while now. The church might close if they can't find a new pastor. But the churches money is very low. Apparently he also spent over $30,000 on online gambling.

TLDR

Pastor lies, steals, and cheats on his wife with multiple women. Gets found out and doxed. Gets fired, devorced, and arrested. And no one knows I did this to him.

It's quite possible that several of the very young children and babies at the church were his. But I cannot confirm this.

I have no idea where Bob is now. I would think still in jail.

Hi Indy! I know Arkhamverse Riddler is definitely your specialty. Do you happen to have a rough ranking of Riddlers that you like from most to least? And which do you think is the most definitive version of the character?

I THINK that’s what my blog description says, anyway

Yes, at all times I have a rough ranking floating around in the back of my mind. It is going to be very long so I will answer the last question first.

For most definitive version of Riddler I’m going to have to go with BTAS. No recurring villain really had a distinct personality from their original (1940s) version, and while I am not knocking Frank Gorshin the 1966 Riddler absolutely was a bit Joker-y. Most importantly (if I am not mistaken, which I could be), BTAS gave Riddler what became his most important trait: his intelligence. Before that he was mostly an average weirdo who wore a green suit (sometimes) and liked riddles and sometimes built puzzle traps. After BTAS, though, the Riddler’s intelligence became the driving force of his character. Batman ‘66 saved Riddler from obscurity, but BTAS made him both relevant and future-proof. Will we ever see a Riddler of average intelligence who doesn’t specialise in computer programming/engineering ever again? I doubt it, and that’s because of BTAS.

Onto the list. It does not include EVERY Riddler ever because I have not read every Riddler story ever, but it should cover most of them (or at least the ones you’ve probably heard of).

1. Anything Paul Dini wrote. This actually covers a few different Riddlers, which would be the first two Arkhamverse games, the most notable PI Riddler stuff, and of course the Riddler from BTAS. Paul Dini can write the Riddler as both being a bad person and sympathetic at the same time, which is actually harder to pull off than it sounds. AND he does it without using backstory as a crutch, which really is hard.

2. Jeph Loeb/Jim Lee’s Riddler from Hush. He only actually appears for two issues, but it’s one of the best Riddler stories merely because it allows him to do all the things Riddler SHOULD be able to do, but can’t because then there would be no Batman comics because he would have ended them. 619C is also, in my opinion, the best Riddler cover of all time.

3. Jim Carrey’s Riddler from Batman Forever. Why would I put him this high on the list, you ask? Because some writers forget that the Riddler is half just in it to have a good time and he doesn’t really care about how other people perceive him. This man is living his best life and he’s doing it in glittery spandex and a light-up jacket. Is he over the top? At the time, no, not really. At the time Riddler kinda just acted like that. And he should be able to do so, in my opinion.

4. Current Riddler (James Tynion IV). While this Riddler has some issues with consistency (though this probably has to do with being shuffled from a main comic story into a Catwoman story), he returns to being almost self-cripplingly paranoid and absolutely losing it when he’s bested, which I think are important traits for Riddler to have. I’m also actually really amused that they gave him the Batman Forever hair.

5. Batman ‘66. While it did likely rescue Riddler from pending obscurity - he actually never appeared in a Batman comic before 1965, and before that was featured in only two issues of Detective Comics - and he definitely checks the ‘charming’ and ‘having fun’ boxes, there isn’t a whole lot differentiating him from the Joker he’s playing alongside. If you watch the Batman ‘66 movie they’re almost the exact same character, just one likes jokes and the other likes riddles.

6. Hush Returns and its aftermath. This stuff is weird and doesn’t make a whole lot of sense because it mostly involves Riddler running away from Hush and retcons certain things from Hush, most importantly the part where Riddler got everyone to work together because he gave them what they wanted. Hush Returns (which also contradicts itself during the story) for some reason has everyone angry at Riddler for tricking them and it ends with him getting the shit beat out of him and puts him into a coma for a year, which leads into him getting total amnesia and becoming a PI. That’s the reason it’s so high on the list. The story is weird and makes no sense at all for any of the other characters in it either but it gave us a reason for PI Riddler and that makes it matter. Sort of.

7. Brave and the Bold/The Batman Riddler. I’m putting them both together mostly because BatB Riddler features in I think only one episode and he deserves a mention because he’s adorable. TB Riddler was an interesting experiment into a Riddler that, for whatever reason, never really came into himself as a person and instead sort of enacts revenge for his existence on life. If I remember correctly he’s also pretty low-key about his intelligence, which is another interesting character choice. I respect the things they went for but this Riddler overall gives me the impression of a person who always says no when invited to something but gets upset when people stop asking which, while definitely something the Riddler would do, isn’t really my preferred take.

8. Snyder Riddler (New 52). The problem I have with this Riddler is that I have no idea what his motivation even is. I was told a long time ago that a backstory for him WAS written but didn’t make it into Zero Year because the story was already too long, which is... not a great look for a professional storyteller. And because we don’t know anything about this Riddler, this story consists of a dude who wears green to impress women (which he never shows any interest in), gets the mob to work for him... somehow... and decides to spend a YEAR watching the people in Gotham die because... I’m not sure? If it amused him, sure, I could understand that. But he just seems super bored during the entirety of the story. He doesn’t even seem particularly excited when Batman actually shows up in front of him. Beyond Zero Year his appearances are, to my knowledge, limited mostly to two issues in Batman Eternal, where he’s hiding, three issues of The Flash, where he speedruns Zero Year and is undone by the Flash villains teaming up against him (which I don’t know enough about Flash villains to comment on), and Scarecrow 23.2, where he for some unexplained reason seems to look up to Scarecrow. And then there’s Detective Comics: Future’s End, which is just the worst thing ever. Snyder didn’t write all of these stories, but they are based on his Riddler.

9. Gotham Riddler. I didn’t watch past season 3 so I can’t comment on too much after that, but the arc with Mad Grey Dawn and ‘I knew that you knew that I knew’ was some of the greatest Riddler stuff we had gotten in years and if they had just kept on with that they would have had one of the greatest Riddlers of all time.

10. Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale Riddler. Full disclaimer I haven’t read Catwoman: When in Rome, but I have read The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. The reason I don’t like this Riddler is because he actually bears no resemblance to him. He’s a literal moron who just stumbles around incompetently for the duration of his relevance to the plot. It’s like they decided to make an ironic Riddler who is actually stupid and also for the first time in his life does not have the ability to locate a tailor. I don’t actually understand the point of this Riddler’s existence. He isn’t even really Riddler, he’s just some sort of vaguely Riddler-coloured person.

For the family, we may make much sacrifice in our life. We'd like to create a harmonious family. Now if there's a thing can help you to express your affection to your family, how can your reject it? If you search online and look for forums dedicated to photography you'll find the most recommended software applications for your computer whether it is a Mac or PC. This free editing program will allow you to write on the photo which you are editing you can actually write on the photo. You can do what every other program can do as well. This is really cool if you want to add something like an autograph look to a picture too. There is enough room for 3 TB of hard drive space. You can choose between 1 TB, 2 TB, or 3 TB. If you want to add a second SATA, you have the option to do so. There is also room for an optical drive, with which you can make your own DVDs. slideshow maker app Is there a tune that always reminds you of that famous scene of that famous actor drowning in the ocean while the love of his life cries and looks beautiful? You know the one. EVERYONE does. Is that really the imagery you want to conjure up when you watch your wedding video? Worse, what if your wedding video doesn't measure up to that other, more famous scene with that actor you kind of had a thing for in grade nine? Be as original as possible and you can't go wrong. Before you jump right into downloading photo editing software you need to figure a few things, such as system requirements, available space, and how often you are going to use it / how computer literate you may be.

I’m pretty sure yesterday was the greatest day of my life. The boy is absolutely perfect and I can’t wait to see him again.

He was so sweet and kind to me.

He kept messing up on his pronunciations so I would say it correctly and have him repeat it and he told me he liked my accent and we both blushed really hard. At least I felt myself blush. And I saw his face. He’s really cute when he gets shy.

We sat in the shop for a long time until he said he couldn’t take anymore learning for one day. I also didn’t want to keep going but I didn’t want to leave him.

BUT THEN

He asked if I wanted to go get something to eat and I said yes. Then he asked where my car was parked and I told him I just walked and he said he would drive me to get food with him. SO I DID!

We went to a cute little 50’s themed diner and talked a lot about ourselves and our lives and everything.

I had my arms on the table waiting for our food and he reached over and grabbed my hand and rubbed his thumb against the side of it. And then he looked at me and told me he was really thankful for my help and that we should do it more often and that we should get together more.

AAAAAAHHHHHH!

Then when we finished eating he payed for me before I could even get my wallet out. What a gentleman.

After that he asked me what time I had to be home and I told him that it didn’t matter cause it doesn’t.

So we went back to his house and he told me he was home alone for the week cause his parents were on a cruise or something that he didn’t want to go on.

We sat on the couch and watched a movie. I don’t remember a lot cause I started to get really tired but I really didn’t want to leave. I did remember that.

I fell asleep laying on his chest on the couch then I woke up next to him in a bed this morning.

When I woke up and before I actually opened my eyes I could feel him rubbing his fingers in my hair real soft. He’s honestly so sweet and cute. AH!

He gave me a kiss on my forehead and let me tell you, diary, I don’t think I’ve ever blushed that hard, EVER.

Everything just felt so so good.

After a while I figured I had to go home so he dropped me off at my house and walked me up to the door. He asked if he was allowed to kiss me, which was absolutely precious, and I obviously said yes, I mean, why wouldn’t I? And we kissed and everything in the world just felt okay. It was weird. Not the kiss. But like how I felt. Like my whole body lit up and I felt like I was in a dream.

If he’s my dream then I never want to wake up.

Happy New Year’s Eve, diary!

It’s been a few days since I wrote but they haven’t been that eventful.

The boy has been calling me every day which is cute. I like him a whole lot.

But the reason I started writing was because a few minutes ago he asked me to go to a New Years party with him tonight!

I’ve never been to Brooklyn, so let’s see how it goes.

Diary, I can’t even begin to tell you everything that happened at that party, but I will try (in a list cause it’s too much to actually write out and once I start I’ll never stop).

When he picked me up, he kissed my cheek

He held my hand for most of the time cause I guess I didn’t know how Brooklyn is like

I finally got to meet Race and Mike’s boyfriends in person! They seem nice :)

Before drinking, the boy asked if I minded if he drank and if I wanted to as well, which I thought was really sweet cause no one has ever asked me that before

We drank a lot, actually (I’m suprised I still remember everything)

We also danced a lot, like a LOT a lot. He’s a really good dancer

When the ball dropped he kissed me on the mouth for a real long time and when he pulled away he gave me this look, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to describe it but it basically said “let’s go somewhere private”

After that he took my hand and lead me to a bedroom, I don’t know whose bedroom it was but I didn’t really care

He asked me if I was comfortable with him and I told him yes cause I am, and he asked if I wanted to make out with him and I said cause cause of course I wanted to

Then we made out for who knows how long but it felt like forever and I was completely happy with that

He didn’t try anything, he didn’t reach down my pants or try to start anything but he did take off a lot of my clothes and I returned the favor (let me tell you diary, this boy has the body of a greek god, I almost couldn’t comprehend how good he looked)

We slept in that room and then when I woke up he was laying on his stomach and I started to run my fingers along his back muscles (which were gorgeous by the way!)

I can’t believe what I did, I wasn’t really thinking, I just let go and did what I felt. But while rubbing his back I ran my hands lower like around his hips and butt. Not like me at all but it felt so good. And then he woke up and lifted his head and looked at me and so I moved my hand real fast cause I was kinda embarrassed and then hE PUT MY HAND BACK ON HIS BACK AND TOLD ME HE LIKED IT AND SAID HE ESPECIALLY LIKED WHEN I WENT LOWER!!

Something came over me (but I wasn’t mad, honestly) and I started getting really flirty like maybe it’s being around him but woah

So I looked at him and said “oh, I can do better than that” and he smiled and was like “oh you can? like what?” but like it wasn’t mean he was also flirty and then I said “roll over and I’ll show you” and so he did and I sat myself right on his chest like near the bottom and started kissing him

I’m not gonna give details of everything that happened cause that’s weird and I don’t want anyone to find this and read that (again, call me paranoid) but let’s just say that was the first time I ever did that and it felt a lot better to do it with another person

After that he dropped me off at my house cause I didn’t want my parents to worry and he kissed me again at the door and woah diary no matter how many times we kiss I still feel butterflies in my stomach

Diary! It’s been a while since I wrote. The last thing you heard was the New Year’s party, but so much has happened since then. I’ve been so busy with the boy.

We went back to school a few days ago and everyone kept asking if we were together. I found out some people saw us together at the party and it spread from there. I’m not mad, it’s kinda fun having a lot of people talk to me for once.

But the rumors are true.

The boy and I are together! <3

He makes my heart flip around itself and I don’t know what I’d do without him.

He’s my light and he’s my love.

My baby.

That feels so good to say.

I have a good feeling about this one. He could be it. I really hope he is. I couldn’t imagine being without him at this point. Though it’s only been a short time, I can just feel it. You know? That feeling in your heart and soul that this is the one person you can spend the rest of your life with. He‘s that person. The one.

Wow.

Hi Diary. Been a while? I forgot about you.

Today is the day of my wedding and as a gift, my mother gave this to me, confessing that she read it and thought it’d be good for me to reread.

I cried remembering all the memories this little book stored and how much trust I put in it to keep my secrets when no one else would.

I’m writing in this one last time to close a chapter and to keep this in the house my about-to-be husband and I are building. Maybe to one day reread it again and feel these emotions all over.

This book reminded me how much everything felt as a teenager, how much we took everything to heart and how every emotion was so overwhelming. I was reminded of those times of complete panic waiting for a first date and then completely letting myself go and facing new challenges on New Year’s.

I’ll never forget those times, as they shaped me into who I am today. Without those memories, I wouldn’t have built confidence, grown to love intimacy, or found a husband.

I always knew he was the one, and now I have proof.

Sincerely and most fondly yours, diary, I’ll continue to reread you when I can.

“So does SHIELD have, like, a zombie apocalypse protocol?”

As has become the norm when there was down time between missions, Skye was hanging out with Fitzsimmons in the lab. She was currently perched on a lab table, legs dangling off the end. Jemma had long since given up on telling her it was against protocol and begrudgingly allowed it, in the name of friendship. Still a relative outsider to the agency, Skye often used the time to quiz Fitz and Simmons on SHIELD procedures and its history-- typically things she was too embarrassed to ask Ward about.

“If they don’t, they definitely should. Epidemiologically speaking, a zombie-like contagion is not outside the realm of possibility,” Jemma posited. “Though it would probably play out pretty differently than the ridiculous way Hollywood portrays it.”

“Hey, I happen to like the over-the-top, goriness of a scary movie, thankyouverymuch,” Skye replied indignantly. “I take it you’re not a fan?”

She shrugged, “Not especially. Though I have seen quite a few, since Fitz is a big fan.”

Engrossed in his work, Fitz had only been half listening, but his ears perked up at his name, “What is it that I’m a fan of?”

“Welcome to the conversation,” Skye teased. “Jemma was just telling me how much you like horror movies.”

Fitz’s eyes lit up, “Oh, yeah, love ‘em. The bloodier, the better, in my book.”

“This from the man who can’t stand the sight of blood in real life,” Jemma piped up.

“For the last time, it’s the smell that gets me! Which obviously has no bearing on my enjoyment of a good slasher film.”

Jemma just rolled her eyes in response. She had heard this all before.

Turning to Skye, Fitz asked, “Please tell me you actually like horror films. It’d be nice to watch one with someone who doesn’t hide behind a pillow the whole time.”

Jemma just shook her head and turned back to her workstation, but Skye swore she heard her mutter something that sounded a lot like “ungrateful git” under her breath.

Skye chuckled, “They’re the best. Give me a good horror flick over a rom-com any day.”

“That’s what I always say!”

The pair dove right in to animatedly discussing the relative merits of horror movie stalwarts like jump scares and The Final Girl.

After a few minutes, Fitz said, “We should do a movie marathon on of these days. I basically have every horror movie ever made on a 2 TB hard drive. We each can pick one of our favorites and then go from there.”

“I’m in!” Skye said, nodding enthusiastically. “I just have one rule. No creepy nuns. I had enough of those growing up at the orphanage.”

“Noted. Crossing The Devils off the list then.”

“Jemma, what about you? You going to watch with us?” Skye asked the other girl.

“I think I’ll leave this one up to you two true horror aficionados. Wouldn’t want to cramp your style by hiding behind a pillow or anything like that,” Jemma said, looking at Fitz pointedly.

“Oh, c’mon. I didn’t mean anything by it, Jemma.”

“Uh-huh. I’m sure you didn’t. But that doesn’t change the fact that I’m not going to watch with you,” she said, as she gathered her things and left the lab.

Fitz turned to Skye, bewildered, “I messed up, didn’t I?”

“Big time.”

A few days (and a few false starts due to missions) later, movie night arrived. Jemma did end up joining them, but only after she extracted a promise from Fitz that he would watch three movies of her choosing, with zero complaints.

In the end, it was a fun night filled with popcorn, laughter and yes, more than a few screams.

I Think I Figured Out How Cephalons Work

I had an idea earlier today about a plausible way Cephalons could be made, and how exactly their data storage works. And all of it is based in tech that either exists or is already in research and development somewhere.

I’ll put the long version with supporting evidence under the cut but, TL;DR:

Cephalon data storage is accomplished via DNA. DNA of the person forming the basis of the Cephalon’s personality is harvested from their brain, and the information is copied and stored in a compatible format - more, lab-created blank DNA used specifically to store information, that can then be edited to the creator’s standards. It works more or less the same as any computer storage, just with much larger capacities and a little bit of sci-fi magic.

Here’s my chain of logic that led to this. Warning: science and math ahead.

The brain holds a preson’s memories, experiences, and personality. Memory creation is done through the process of neurons firing in particular patterns and in a certain order; this is also how people recall things later. Neuron firing and signal transmission is done through electrical charges, and this is part of the reason people theorize that storing human consciousness in robotic or computer forms may be possible at all.

Coincidentally, modern computer storage works in much the same way. SSDs in particular use data stored in electrical charges. But, of course, most modern SSDs are a few TB in storage at most. It would take a lot more to store a whole human mind, right?

I looked up some facts and did some calculations. The estimated storage capacity of the human brain is:

Let’s assume the high end of those estimates, 2.5 petabytes. That means that we’d need, at minimum, 2500 TB to store a human mind. And, let’s also assume for redundancy, that you’d want at least double that, to have a backup. So, 5000 TB is what we’re working with. And the current largest available SSD size is:

Let’s round that down to 30 TB. So, 5000 divided by 30 means we would need, at minumum, 167 of this SSD to store everything. That is... horrifically impractical.

But, you know what is really good at storing information? DNA. Just how good, you ask?

A quick conversion and we get:

So, multiplying it out, one cubic mm of DNA can hold about 687 TB of data (rounding down). Meaning that the total amount of DNA to cover our original 5000 TB estimate is just over 7.25 cubic mm. If you wanna convert that to volume, at a rate of 1 cubic mm = 0.001 mL, the liquid (modern DNA storage of data involves suspending it in liquid solutions) is less than 0.008 mL. That’s less than your average drop of water.

Keep in mind, this is using a method that has already been done in a lab, in the modern day. And, information was successfully copied and retrieved using this method.

But, okay, let’s assume for a second all of this is too good to be true. We need to account for efficiency, right? Nothing is ever 100% efficient. Let’s be super pessimistic, and assume that things only get copied at around 10% accuracy. Yes, modern lab methods are very accurate, but hey. If Cephalon minds are copied from dying brains, we can assume a lot of stuff will go wrong, right?

Now, recalculating with this, one cubic mm of DNA will hold approximately 65 TB (rounding down a few TB, because why not). So now we need more in the neighborhood of 80 cubic mm - you know what, let’s account for MORE errors and round up to 100.

That’s still only 0.1 mL of liquid. About 2 drops.

So, DNA can store an insane amount of information in a very small space. Even accounting for a lot of redundancy and error, you could more or less fit an entire human mind on the tip of your finger, and then some.

But, hang on, this has to be way far off in the future, I mean, there’s no way this method of storage could be practical anytime soo-

... Yes it can.

And remember. It is the far future, and the Orokin are filthy rich.

Let’s go back to Cephalons. Given that we can safely assume their creation, and the Orokin Empire, are at least centuries, but more likely millennia, away, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to human mind mapping. I mean, hey, we’ve already mapped the entire human genome, right? So let’s assume the Orokin can actually copy a digital map of a person’s mind, as a digital analog of the brain. Take that tiny bit of DNA liquid, suspend it in some substrate, give it significant protection, and you’re good to go.

This is where I’m using sci-fi magic license. But, say, because it’s the future and it’s the Orokin, they’ve figured out a way to map human minds to DNA storage, like the hard drive of a computer. I think it’s possible they’d also have invented a way to make this generic data mimic the person it came from.

You know how a computer keeps certain background tasks active in your task manager? Permanently loaded background tasks could include personality files and general outlines for following command orders. Code instructions telling the Cephalon how to behave. Memories and command executables and such are the normal storage, to be accessed as needed. And, because their memory and personality data are now mapped in a way that is accessible to to encoder, they can also be edited at will.

For example, making a violent mercenary a bit more tame...

Give it some sensors - optical, auditory, etc - and it can now also hear and see the world around it. It can, more or less, react just how Cephalons react in game. It wouldn’t exactly be hard to create a 3D holographic projection as a visual representation, either.

So. You’ve just created a computerized version of a human. You’ve just created a Cephalon.

But wait - what substrate would they suspend the DNA information in? What is the magic juice that would facilitate this and make it all happen?

That’s easy. The same liquid the Orokin used to harvest their information in the first place. The same liquid that, when Ordan was made to drink it, precipitated his conversion, likely destroying his organic brain in the process, judging by his testimony. The same liquid that, going with all of the above theories, would tear apart human brain cells to get at the DNA inside, storing it for either destruction or salvation - salvation that could come in the form of a Cephalon conversion, or... perhaps even continuity.

And, the most interesting thing about this? DNA holds its integrity over a LONG time. Like, thousands of years long, at least, if well-maintained. So, it would be perfect for archival storage. Just get a lot of liquid together, and you can store even more information besides just the mind in charge. You can get yourself an archival Cephalon, and one that would be more or less immortal as well. Maybe even one with enough data capacity to store information samples from other beings as well...

... Sound like anyone we know?

Granted, Simaris’s scans are imperfect copies. Nowhere near the fidelity of a true Cephalon. But, he’s doing the best with what he has. Bet his methods save pretty significantly on storage space, as well. Using DNA storage, he could probably very well synthesize most of the system and still contain it all within that relay room of his. No matter how many scans the Tenno bring him.

Suda is similar. But, due to her memory loss prior to conversion, some of her mind was irreparably damaged or lost and unable to be copied. You can’t retain what isn’t there, after all.

Ship Cephalons are more simple. They need to be mobile, after all, able to fit and be carried within an Orbiter subsystem. But, as we’ve seen, that’s easy enough, if you’re only accounting for one mind and the commands necessary to go along with it.

Maybe, just maybe, somewhere under the Orbiter consoles, in the tangle of electronics that form the belly of the ship, there’s a tiny, Rubik’s cube sized container of liquid, glowing bright blue from the hot currents of electricity running through it, and with a few hairline cracks from years of wear and tear, waiting for the Operator to figure out he’s been there all along.

After a bit of a torrid weekend at Silverstone I went into Oulton wanting to get back on course. I always set quite specific goals prior to a race weekend to give me something to focus on. They are also realistic goals. As a racer the goal should be to win, but at National level outright winning is not achievable. I do not have the skill or experience to do it so there is no point kidding myself that I do.

I had a plan for Oulton that involved not getting arm pump, scoring points and setting a PB laptime. To achieve the first I had to pre-emptively do something before I even got on the bike. As a team we are lucky enough to have a physio with us at every meeting. I don’t visit Sue very often but when I do she always works wonders. To prevent the onset of arm pump, which plagues me at Oulton Park, she taped my forearms and gave me a little roller gadget that gets cooled in the freezer. I also had to change my riding slightly to reduce the risk. Relaxing on the bike a little combined with physio meant I didn’t get any major issues with my arms over the weekend.

As is the norm free practice is just that. An opportunity to get tuned into the track and also check my gearing and settings from my last visit in 2018 were about right. I finished the session 14th and just a little over a second slower than my fastest lap in 2018.

Qualifying is done on new tyres so I expected to see an improvement in lap times but not necessarily position as everyone else goes quicker too. As it turned out the session was a bit sketchy. With rain threatening I was keen to get out and get a quick lap in before the track was wet. On the first flying lap there was a short sharp shower and even though the rain flags and lack of adhesion flags were flying at all the marshal posts the track seemed ok. I chose to stay out and push on just in case it rained again. For the first few laps I was in 8th position but I could see by my pit board that the lap time wasn’t going to hold up unless it rained again. I pressed on but as the quicker riders realised that the track was ok my position slipped and I ended up in 15th and went just over .5 of a second quicker than free practice.

Race 1 went well. The bike felt good and gearing seemed to be working. My sector times and speed trap times weren’t far off the mark so that tells me I need to up my corner speed to achieve better lap times. Initially I got a good start and was up to the back wheel of my team mate who started a couple of rows in front of me. I made a deliberate decision not to dive up the inside of him as I had seen he had a less than ideal start. Ultimately he is a lot quicker than me so there was no point risking a big orange and white heap in turn one. As it was he nearly put himself in a heap on the exit of turn one by running off the track and getting a bit out of shape. I ran with the main group for the first half a lap. Danny Shaw ran wide at Shell oils so I took the chance to get by him. I then set to getting by Scott Pitchers. It took me a lap and a half of looking on the brakes into the chicanes and the final turn. I even changed down one too few gears at Lodge because I was so focussed on out braking him. Someone tried to pass me as we went up to Deer Leap but I held my line and he went away. Not sure who it was. I finally got Scott by getting a better drive out of the banked hairpin at Shell Oils and out braking him in Brittens Chicane. I could then see I was making good progress catching the pink bike of Lee Devonport so I kept at it. I had to tuck in on the brakes into Shell Oils on the next lap as Danny Shaw came by. Close but safe racing is always fun. I tried to use Danny to pull me along and my plan was to be with him when he made a move on Lee so I could capitalise too. As it was the red flags came out due to Lee’s team mate, Pete, going down at Druids. With 6 laps done the result was called so I had finished 14th and a lap time that meant 14th on the grid for Race 2. A 1:45.1 which was over a second a lap quicker than I did last year.

Race 2. Following the cancellation of our warm-up session on Monday morning I chose to go with what I knew on gearing. The plan was to try something different for warm-up and make a call before race 2. Rather than risk it I rolled out for the grid with the bike exactly as it was for race 1. The only difference was that I was one place further up the grid. Again a decent start but this time it felt like I got leant on a bit at turn one so I ended up running up onto the paint at the apex. That unsettled the bike a little so I didn’t quite get on the gas as quick as I should have. That had a knock on effect and I was in 16th by the time I crossed the line at the end of the first lap. Michael Tustin ran wide at Shell Oils on lap 2 so that was an easy place gained. I then had to work out how to get by Paul Slade. End of lap two I took my chance, good drive out of Lodge and up over Deer Leap meant I had the run on him down the start/finish. I stayed central and went under him on the brakes into turn one. Job done and I concentrated on being consistent. I was lucky enough to do a track walk with Mr Bridewell on Friday night so implementing his wisdom whilst racing was my sole focus. I tried a little too hard on one lap and nearly highsided between Hizzys and Knickerbrook. Clearly TB has a bit more talent than me.

I could see the three in front of me scrapping and on lap five something happened on the brakes into Hizzys chicane leading to Craig Currie running on and through the long lap section. That dangled a little carrot for me so I started working to catch him. At this point my pit board was crucial. With three laps to go Tustin had regrouped and the gap behind was down from 1.6 to .6 due to a combination of mistakes by me with gear changes and fatigue. I knew I had to work hard to keep 14th place so I pushed on with two laps to go and ended up getting the gap back to 1.4 by the time I crossed the line. It also meant that my last two laps of the weekend were my fastest and a 1:44.7 on the final lap stands as a PB at Oulton. Pushing all the way like that meant that scoring points, no arm-pump and my fastest ever lap around this circuit were all achieved. Winning.

Along with all of the action on track I also managed to work with two new members of the team all weekend. I showed them around the 959 and got them up to speed on what needs to be done on the preparation side so that the bikes can be raced. Huge thanks to both of them for taking it all in and applying it to ensure the bike was just as it should be for me to achieve personal goals and put the team on the public stage.

Before keyboards, mice and other accessories, Patriot was a flash memory based company. It originally started with RAM and then started to release USB flash drives and eventually started producing SSDs and gaming peripherals. Patriot's Viper product line is considered their top of the line products and meant for those discerning consumers that demand the best. The Viper VPN100 PCIe M.2 SSD is Patriots next entry into the M.2 PCIe drive market. The VPN100 comes in capacities from 256GB all the way to 2 TB and is covered by a 3-year warranty. This drive features a massive heatsink and the drive boasts a 3450 MB/s read speed and 3000 MB/s write speed. The VPN100 uses the latest Phison E12 controller that is PCIe Gen 3 x 4 capable and supports the latest NVMe 1.3 specification. On the front of the box, there is a large graphic of the drive. The actual drive capacity is noted by a sticker also located on the front. The back fo the box contains the specifications of the drive in multiple languages. There's also a front flap that can be opened. Inside the flap, Patriot gives you some information on why the company thinks this drive is the one for you as well as goes into a little more detail on the cooling features of the drive. On the opposite side, you can get a peek at the actual drive housed in a plastic shell.

Upon opening the box, you'll be presented with a plastic shell with the Viper VPN100 drive encased within.

A Closer Look at the Patriot Viper VPN100 The most prominent feature on the drive is the large heatsink applied on top of the controller and memory ICs. The heatsink is made of aluminum and features 10 vertical slots for airflow and the Viper logo in the center.

From the side profile, you can see the heatsink is fairly tall on the Viper VPN100, measuring in at 10mm. That's great for everyone except for those that would like to put this in their laptop. In most cases, this drive won't fit.

On the back of the drive, Patriot put a sticker indicating the drive's capacity and other pertinent information. You can see here that our test sample is the 512 GB version.

After initial testing, I decided to pull the heatsink off the VPN100 to get a look at the controller and memory ICs below. The picks that come in the iFixIt kit were essential to removing the heatsink. I slid the pick between the heatsink and and the modules below it. Good lord, whatever thermal pad they used took forever to clean off from the ICs. Using some isopropyl alcohol and some elbow grease, I still wasn't able to get all of the adhesive off of the ICs. It was stuck on pretty well.

The Viper VPN100 has ICs on only one side. The controller, DRAM, and flash are all located under the heat sink.

The controller for the Viper VPN100 is the newest Phison PS5012-E12 controller. The controller is PCIe 3.0X4 with NVMe 1.3 protocol support. The E12 (non-c variant) can support up to a max capacity of 8 TB. Sequential speeds of 3200 MB/s read and 3000 MB/s write can be obtained using this controller.

Two 256GB 64-layer BICS 3D triple-level cell chips labeled TCBBG55A1 which, are manufactured by Toshiba. The write endurance is rated at 800 TB which is pretty massive for a 512 GB SSD.

Finally, the DRAM is a Nanya 512MB memory chip that is used for caching.

Additional testing was done after the heatsink was removed. The first round of benchmarks was run with an empty drive. The second round of benchmarks was run with the drive over 75% full. Each benchmark was run three times and we recorded the best overall scores for this review. There were no less than 20 minutes between each benchmark to give the drive time to cool down and rest. A quick side note. The threaded Q-depth tests on the Anvils Storage Utilities named the drive as a Toshiba drive, However, it had the correct letter and capacity. ATTO Disk Benchmark The ATTO Disk Benchmark utility was designed to measure regular disk drive performance. However, its more than capable of measuring both USB flash drive and SSD speeds as well. The utility measures disk performance rates for various sizes of files and displays the results in a bar chart showing read and write speeds at each file size. The results are displayed in megabytes per second Both the fresh out of box and the 75% capacity tests are almost identical with the 75% test just barely ahead. The ATTO tests were able to get extremely close to the manufactures advertised speeds. AS SSD Benchmark AS SSD Benchmark is a simple and portable utility which helps you measure the effectiveness and performance of any solid state (SSD) drives connected to your system. It will test “Seq”, “4K”, “4K-64Thrd” and Access Time. In the end, it will give your SSD a score. 4K tests the read/write abilities by access random 4K blocks while the Sequential test measures how fast the drive can read a 1GB file. For AS SSD, we run the SSD benchmark and the Copy Benchmark. The tests with the drive at 75% resulted in 2250.58 MB/s read and 1982.07 MB/s write in the sequential tests. 4K resulted in 55.40 MB/s read and 146.20 MB/s write speeds with an overall score of 5302. Each of the tests fell a bit short of the manufactures stated sequential read and write speeds. Anvil’s Storage Utilities Anvil’s Storage Utilities is a powerful performance measurement tool for both traditional hard drives and SSDs. The tool can monitor, and test read and write speeds on hard drives while also providing information from the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) that provides basic information about the disk and its parameters, including partitions and volumes. The ANVIL SSD benchmark resulted in sequential read speed of 3281.40 MB/s read speed and 1984.50MB/s write speeds on the fresh drive with an overall score of 15698.26. The VPN100 at 75% capacity yielded a result of 2301.12 MB/s read and 1984.50 MB/s write speeds and for the first time in our testing scored lower at 14835.12 overall. CrystalDiskMark 5.2.1 CrystalDiskMark is designed to quickly test the performance of your hard drives. Currently, the program allows to measure sequential and random read/write speeds. Crystal Disk Mark is where we see the closest sequential read and write speeds to what the manufacture published. The empty drive resulted in 3469.9 MB/s read and 2101.1 MB/s write speeds. When the drive was filled up to 75% of its total capacity, the read speed came back at 3472.0 MB/s and 2105.3 MB/s on the write speed. 4K speeds were good as well at 966.7 MB/s read and 1952.7 MB/s write on the empty drive compared to 1065.3 MB/s read and 1939.8 MB/write speed when the drive is filled to 75%. Conclusion and Final Thoughts First, let's get some additional testing out of the way. For this drive specifically, I really wondered if the heatsink was necessary. The drive is fast and from the results so far, meets the specifications listed. I reinstalled the drive in an open slot below the GPU with no heatsink installed, including the SSD covers that come with the Aorus Z390 Pro motherboard and I ran through some tests once more. The results were similar to the results that were obtained with the heatsink installed. During this test, I also pulled up AIDA 64 to monitor temperatures as the controller has a max operating temperature of 70°C. During the non-heatsink tests, I saw a max temperature of 50°C and 53°C during an extended write test using HDDTune. With the heatsink installed, I observed temperatures of 45°C during our standard test suite and an absolute max of 47°C in the extended write testing. Take into consideration these tests were performed on an open test bench and not in a standard PC case or a laptop. Even then, I would think it would be safe to say the SSD would keep temperatures down below the throttling threshold.

The Patriot Viper VPN100 is armed with the latest controller from Phison and the latest 3D NAND from Toshiba. The pairing results in great speeds for the drive. In my testing, I was able to easily eclipse 2 GB/s write speeds and 3 GB/s read speeds. I do feel the packaging on the Viper VPN100 is slightly misleading. The box does say up to 3000 MB/s write however, that's only on the 1 and 2 TB models and yet those specifications persist on the smaller capacity drives as well. You'll have to dig into the product documentation for the actual specifications. Shame on me, as I did make the fatal mistake of believing the box vs reading the product documentation when I first started testing the drive. The Viper VPN is a fast and stable drive. I continue to try to heat it up and get it to throttle but as of yet, I have been unable to do so with the heatsink off. So, if you feel like pulling that massive hunk of aluminum off, you can slide this drive into your laptop. As of this writing, the Viper VPN512 GB model can be had for $83 on Amazon with the 1TB slightly more at $145. Combine the pricing with the speeds and you've got a drive that is hard to beat.
