Bless The Broken Road - 27
The next morning, Jane gave Jack a call to fill him in on what was going on.
“Hey, Jack-”
“Jane! Thank god! You never came home last night. I was worried!” Jack exclaimed as soon as he answered her call.
“Relax, I’m fine,” she assured him. “It’s kind of a long story, but I ended up at Spencer’s last night and we got back together.”
“Seriously?! Jane, that’s great!” he cheered.
“Yeah, I know,” she agreed, smiling.
“Do you think you’ll move back in right away? I’m free tomorrow to help.”
“That’d be great, Jack. I’m planning on coming over to grab some things at some point today. I’ll see you later.”
She hung up and returned to the living room, curling back up on the couch next to Spencer. She’d need to get some of her hygiene items like shampoo, etc. as well as a change of clothes later. For the time being, Spencer let her borrow one of his shirts to lounge in.
“Jack offered to help move my stuff back here tomorrow,” she informed him, resting her head on his shoulder and wrapping an arm around his torso.
“Are you sure you want to move back in so soon? I’d understand if you wanted to take more time,” Spencer said, reaching around to wrap his own arm around her.
“I’m sure. This way, we can pretend the last three weeks and two days never happened.”
He kissed the top of her head. “Sounds like a great idea,” he told her.
~~~
On Monday morning, there was no one in the bullpen when Jane and Spencer arrived, meaning there was no one to notice that they had arrived at the same time.
They spent the morning working on paperwork at their own desks, therefore nobody suspected anything had changed between them.
Around mid-morning, Garcia came over to Jane’s desk.
“Jane, I am so sorry about Friday! I shouldn’t have pushed you so hard to go out and I definitely shouldn’t have set you up with someone I’ve never met personally and-” she paused in her apology, examining Jane’s face. “You don’t seem that mad anymore.”
Jane laughed and shook her head. “I’m not mad. It’s alright, Penny.”
The blonde stood there, perplexed by her friend’s happier mood. She hadn’t seen her like this in weeks. “What happened after you hung up on me Friday?”
To answer her question, Spencer came over, placing a fresh mug of coffee on Jane’s desk.
Jane’s eyes brightened even more. “Thank you!” she cheered. He bent down and gave her a peck on the lips before turning to look at Garcia. Both of them couldn’t help but smirk at the look on her face.
“What? Are- are you two- Are you two back together?” She finally spat out.
The two smiled and nodded before sharing a look.
Garcia let out a shriek, gathering the attention of the others in the area. “Oh, this is so exciting! I am so happy! This is the best thing ever!”
“What’s going on, baby girl?” Morgan asked as he and JJ decided to get up from their desks and join the conversation. He looked to Jane and Spencer and his brow furrowed. “Hold on, did you two make up?”
“Yes, they did!” Garcia cheered.
Both Spencer and Jane laughed at their friends' excitement.
“That’s great! Good job, man!” Morgan gave Spencer a brotherly punch in the arm.
“That’s so good to hear!” JJ cheered.
“Thanks, you guys! We should probably all get back to work, though,” Jane told them.
They all agreed, repeating their congratulations one more time before walking off.
Jane smiled to herself as she returned to the file she was working on.
It was like one second she was reading the file and the next her mind flashed back to that dreaded basement again.
“Jane!” Spencer broke her out of it. He’d come back over to say one more thing before he went back to work. Jane shook her head and looked up at him standing next to her desk. “Are you alright?” he asked.
Before they could talk about it, Hotch had come out of his office to tell them a case had come in.
Jane stood and brushed past Spencer to head to the briefing room.
~~~
The team was able to solve the case and return back home in time for the weekend.
In the middle of the night on Friday, Jane was woken up by a nightmare. She slipped out from under the covers, making sure not to disturb Spencer, and silently tiptoed to the bathroom. Taking a seat on the bathroom floor, she silently cried and tried to calm down.
~
The next morning, Jane was still tired so they decided to devote the day to watching movies.
That night, more nightmares came.
Spencer was the first to wake on Sunday morning. He got up and got breakfast ready while Jane continued to sleep. Just as he was turning off the stove, he heard her screaming coming from the bedroom.
Spencer ran into the bedroom and rushed to her side. She was still asleep but was screaming and thrashing around in her sleep. He tried to gently wake her. When her eyes flashed open, there was a moment in which she didn’t realize where she was, as if she was still inside her nightmare and he was her abductor. Jane shoved him away.
“Jane!” he called out.
The sound of his voice brought her back to reality.
“Spencer, I’m so sorry!” she apologized immediately. She sat up and hugged her knees to her chest.
"That’s alright. You didn’t mean it.” He moved to sit next to her. “Jane, I know you’ve been having nightmares again, along with some other stuff,” he told her softly.
She sat there, saying nothing.
“I think you need to talk to someone. It doesn’t have to be me, but I think you need help.”
“No I don’t,” she denied, though tears came to her eyes.
"It takes time, but it’ll only get better if you face it rather than ignore it.”
Jane remained silent, her eyes focused on something only she could see off in the distance.
“I made breakfast. Why don’t we go eat?” Spencer suggested, changing the subject.
She nodded and allowed him to take her hand, help her out of bed, and lead her to the kitchen.
~~~
Tuesday, June 15.
“I’m going to run some errands and grab lunch. I’ll see you later,” Spencer informed Jane.
Jane spun in her chair to look at him as he moved to walk away. “Well, wait! Do you want me to come with you?” she offered.
“Not this time. I want to go alone,” he told her. “I’ll be back in a bit.”
Jane stared at him as he walked away, thinking it was a little suspicious but chose to ignore it.
An hour later, Garcia and Jane were having a conversation at Jane’s desk.
“Woah,” Garcia exclaimed randomly.
Jane raised an eyebrow. “Um, woah what?”
Spencer approached from behind Jane and cleared his throat. She spun around in her chair and her eyes widened. Spencer had traded in his ‘boy band’ haircut for a much shorter style.
“Spencer, wow!” Jane spoke.
His cheeks went red and he looked down, scratching his neck, embarrassed. “You hate it,” he said.
“What? No! It’s just different,” Jane insisted. “But it looks really, really good.”
“It does?”
“Yes! Right, Pen?”
“Uh...yeah! Totally!” Garcia cheered. “You, boy genius, are one tall drink of water.”
Jane got up from her seat. “I’m going to go grab more coffee from the break room. Spence, do you want some?”
“That sounds great!” he agreed, going to grab his cup from his own desk before following Jane to the break room.
“See ya, Garcia!” Jane said as the tech analyst also left Jane’s desk and broke off from the group.
The room was empty when they entered. Jane moved to the counter and began brewing the coffee.
“I’m serious, Spence. Your hair looks great! It’s so sexy,” she told him, turning around to face him, leaning against the counter.
He smiled at her, speechless.
Jane pulled him closer to her and lowered her voice to say, “I cannot wait to get you home and all alone tonight.”
She pulled his face down to hers and kissed him, running her hands through his new, short hair.
The door to the break room opened and Garcia entered, causing them to jump apart.
“Thought I’d warn you that Rossi is coming this way,” she told the pair with a wink.
“Thanks, Garcia,” they murmured. They hurried to get their coffee refilled before heading back to their desks and getting back to their files.
Every once in a while, Jane would glance up toward Spencer. More than once, he caught her staring at him, biting her lip. Upon seeing this, he’d turn red and look away again.
At one point, Jane decided to gather up the files she’d finished so far and go turn them into Hotch in his office. On the way back to her desk, Jane passed Spencer’s desk, reaching out to brush her hand across his head. When she returned to her desk, she looked back at him and smirked before shooting him a wink and going back to work. He chuckled to himself before also going back to work.
Upon arrival home from work, Spencer took Shortstack outside and Jane began to work on cooking dinner. When it was ready, they sat down and ate, making small talk and forcing themselves to remain patient.
They finished eating and worked together to get the dishes washed and put away. Jane put the last plate in the cabinet and shut the door before turning and smiling at Spencer.
She took his hand and guided him back to the bedroom, shutting the door after them.
~
Spencer woke up the next morning to Jane kissing his lips. He smiled under the kiss, causing her to pull away to look at him. He opened his own eyes to see her leaning over him slightly, smiling down at him.
“Good morning,” she greeted.
He reached up and kissed her again. “Good morning.”
Jane laid back down to rest her head on his chest. “Ugh, I don’t want to go to work today,” she complained.
“We could probably call in if you really wanted to,” he suggested.
“No,” she shook her head slightly. “We better get up and get ready.” She moved to sit up and slip out of bed, the cool air creating goosebumps on her bare skin. Spencer sat up and watched her. “I’ll go shower first,” she told him, heading into the bathroom.
Jane had just finished rinsing out her shampoo and was about to begin rubbing conditioner in her hair when she heard the bathroom door open and close.
“I took Shortstack out to go to the bathroom and gave him his food,” Spencer’s voice called over the sound of the water.
“Good.” She stopped rubbing her hair and pulled the curtain back a bit so she could see him.
“You know,” she began with a smirk. “We could probably get ready faster if we just showered at the same time,” she suggested.
Spencer grinned and stripped his clothes back off before stepping into the shower with her. Jane grabbed his shampoo from the corner and put some on her hand before reaching up to rub it in his hair. He had to bend down slightly for her to reach it properly. Unable to resist the temptation, she leaned forward and kissed him.
~
Needless to say, showering together proved to be counterproductive for the couple, causing them to arrive at work around forty-five minutes late.
As Jane sat at her desk working on paperwork, she couldn’t help but notice a few of the others gathered over at Morgan’s desk, talking in hushed voices and laughing occasionally.
Jane chose to ignore it and continued to work.
A while later, Morgan came over to her. “Hey, sweetness,” he greeted with a grin.
“Hey,” she replied back. “Why are you smiling at me like that?”
“No reason,” he chuckled, walking away before she could interrogate him further.
People continued glancing at her throughout the next few hours until Garcia finally decided to end the teasing and take her into the bathroom.
“Garcia, you couldn’t have just told me out there?” Jane complained as the door closed behind them.
“No, I couldn’t,” Garcia argued. “Look at your neck.” She gestured to the mirror and Jane obliged, gasping in realization as to why everyone was behaving the way they were. There was a very obvious hickey on the front of her neck.
“I guess someone had a good time last night,” Garcia giggled as she handed Jane some concealer to help her cover it up.
Jane shook her head. “This wasn’t here this morning.”
“So when did you get it?” Jane hesitated to answer, but Garcia figured it out in the moment of silence. “Oh!” she exclaimed. “Is that why you two were late?”
“Maybe...”
“Oh, it so is!”
Jane finished with the makeup and handed it back to Garcia. “Thanks for telling me but I don’t think we should continue this discussion.”
She turned and hurried out of the bathroom, a bit embarrassed.
Later in the day, Spencer apologized to Jane about the situation. “I didn’t mean for you to get embarrassed,” he told her.
“That’s alright. It’s too late to change anything now,” she assured him. “We’ll just be extra careful next time.”
Hotch entered the bullpen and announced that there was a case.
The case lasted a few days and fortunately helped distract the team from being able to tease Jane and Spencer anymore.
~~~~~
Sunday, June 20th.
Spencer woke up and followed the smell of pancakes out to the kitchen where he found Jane cooking.
“Good morning!” she chirped, taking another pancake off of the frying pan and placing it on the stack. Before pouring more batter to make the next one, she moved over to Spencer, reaching up to plant a kiss on his lips. “Happy one year anniversary!”
He wrapped his arms around her waist, keeping her close. “Happy one year anniversary to you too,” he repeated with a wide smile.
Around a week ago, the couple had decided to not count the near month that they had spent broken up and therefore would still consider June 20th to be their anniversary.
“I’m making pancakes!” Jane said as she broke away from him and went to continue making breakfast.
“I see that,” he chuckled.
“I think I have enough batter left to make two more and then I’ll be done. Go sit down.”
Spencer obliged and Jane joined him a few minutes later.
After breakfast, Jane received a call from Garcia.
“Hey, Penelope!”
“Hey! I was wondering if you wanted to join me in shopping at the mall today?” she asked.
“Oh, not today, Pen,” Jane told her. “It’s Spencer and I’s first anniversary. Maybe next weekend or something?”
“I was really hoping to go today!” the blonde insisted.
“No, I’m sorry. I gotta go.” Jane hung up and returned back to the living room. “That was Garcia. She wanted me to go shopping with her,” Jane informed Spencer.
“You should go,” he told her.
Her brow furrowed. “You want me to spend our anniversary shopping with Garcia?” she questioned.
“Yeah.”
“Don’t you want to spend it together?” Jane crossed her arms.
“I do, but you and Garcia haven’t had time to hang out in a while and we live together. We can celebrate later,” Spencer insisted.
“OK...” Jane gave in, suspicious. “I’ll call her back then.”
Jane spent the entire day shopping with Garcia.
Garcia guided Jane to a specific store and encouraged her to get a specific dress, telling her that she would pay for it for her.
“Garcia, it’s beautiful, but I can’t ask you to buy it for me! It’s way too expensive,” Jane argued.
“But if you get it, then we could go back to my place and you can put it on and I can help you do your hair and makeup all nice to surprise Spencer with!”
Jane narrowed her eyes at her. “OK, what’s going on?”
“Nothing’s going on,” Garcia lied.
“Garcia, you know I can tell when you’re lying.”
Garcia groaned, “Fine. Spencer’s preparing a fancy dinner for you back home and Morgan and Rossi are helping him. He asked me to keep you busy all day and he gave me money to buy this dress for you.”
“Oh my god, that’s so sweet!” Jane exclaimed.
“I guess I have to let him know the surprise is ruined.”
“Well, don’t tell me any more details. That way I can be partially surprised,” Jane suggested.
They found the dress in Jane’s size and purchased it before heading back to Garcia’s to get Jane ready for the dinner.
Right around six, Jane arrived home. She opened the door to find a trail of rose petals on the ground and Shortstack sitting in front of her with a little bowtie on.
“Well don’t you look handsome,” Jane laughed, setting her stuff aside and kneeling down to greet the pup. Shortstack barked and turned to walk towards the balcony, the same direction as the trail of rose petals.
Out on the balcony, Spencer stood by a table with candles and flowers on it. He was wearing a tux.
“Happy anniversary,” he told her, coming forward to give her a kiss. “I love you so much, Jane.”
“I love you too, Spencer. I can’t believe you did all of this for me!” she told him, embracing him before he took a step back to take in her attire.
“You look so beautiful,” he told her.
Jane blushed. “You look great too. Thank you for buying the dress for me. Garcia’s not a very good liar,” Jane chuckled.
“You’re very welcome. Shall we?” he gestured toward the table and she moved forward to one of the chairs. Spencer pulled it out for her before walking around to his own chair.
“The food looks delicious. Did you make this?” Jane asked.
“With Rossi’s help,” he admitted. “I figured I’d learn from an Italian food expert.” Jane laughed. “Morgan helped too with setting things up.”
“Remind me to thank both of them,” she said as she went to take her first bite.
“How was your day with Garcia?” he asked, also digging in.
“It was fun, but I missed you. This is lovely and I really appreciate the effort you put into it, but I felt guilty spending our anniversary away from you,” Jane admitted.
“Don’t. It was all part of the plan,” he insisted. “Wine?” he asked as he grabbed the bottle.
“Yes, please.” Jane held out her glass and he poured both of them a glass before raising his. Jane mimicked him. “To one year of being together,” she began. “It wasn’t all full of happiness, but it was all worth it because, in the end, I get to be with you. I love you.”
“I love you too,” Spencer repeated back. “Cheers.” They clinked their glasses.

Essential Oils that Repel Fleas
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/41AN22BqWwUL-1.jpg Anyone that has fur babies has more than likely had to figure out how to deal with the nightmare that is fleas at one point or another.
Sometimes it can feel impossible to find a good way to not only keep fleas off of your dog but also repel and kill fleas inside your home and in your yard as well.
People are left between the choices of shelling out their money to expose their home, human family members, and pets to harmful chemicals or seeking out more natural ways to eliminate fleas.
Lately more people have been discovering that essential oils have a great many uses beyond covering the scent of dog farts and beefy breath in your home. Many have been found to repel fleas, and some even kill the irritating little critters.
Benefits of Using Essential Oils to Repel Fleas Over Flea Medications
Many people decide to use essential oils over medication to help get rid of fleas because the oils are natural and aren’t harmful to your dog or your human family members when used correctly.
Medications can be a good way to kill fleas, but sometimes with prolonged or incorrect use, they can cause medical issues ranging from skin irritations to vomiting and even respiratory problems. Not to mention it can sometimes be hard to get your dog to take a pill.
After a while of using the same medication, the fleas may become immune to them.
Even when used correctly, the flea medication, collars, etc. can have harmful effects on people, especially kids.  The topical medications are exposed so it can get on their hands and spread throughout your house and ingested.
Most small children can’t seem to stop putting their hands in their mouths, so this is especially dangerous for those kiddos. ‘Cmon.  You know if your kid is a thumb sucker.
Essential oils repel fleas, but they can also help with inflammation and scratching that go along with the jumpers. Many essential oils have antiseptic properties that can help heal the bites from the fleas as well as sores and skin irritation caused from scratching.
Keeping your dog’s nails trimmed can also help reduce these problems.
Dangers Associated with Essential Oils
While essential oils are a great natural way to get rid of fleas, there are some oils shouldn’t be used on small dogs or on cats.  Make sure look into each individual oil before you use it on or around your pets.
youtube
Also do not use undiluted oils on your pet or yourself.  It can be dangerous to expose your dog to anything more than marginal amounts essential oils.
Use a carrier oil to blend your essential oils before application.  Carrier Oils Include:
Coconut Oil
Avocado Oil
Evening Primrose Oil
Jojoba Oil
Sweet Almond Oil
Castor Oil
Olive Oil
Grapeseed Oil
Some oils, such as such as pennyroyal oil, can be toxic if used on your skin or your pet. Some oils can cause sun sensitivity and some react badly when combined with other medications.  Anyone who is pregnant should also use caution when handling essential oils.
Always do your homework and research which oils are safe and which ones could potentially pose hazards.
Essential Oils That Repel Fleas
Pennyroyal Essential Oil
Pennyroyal oil, from a plant that is a member of the mint family, is one of the oldest known remedies for fleas. It works best as a repelant for use around the home.
This oils is one that is not recommended for use directly on human or pet skin as it can have toxic effects.
Using the herb in dried form can also help with keeping fleas away from your home.
Cedarwood Essential Oil
This one is not only good for repelling fleas but it also kills them.
This is another oil that you shouldn’t put directly on your pet’s skin undiluted. Instead, try adding it to some coconut oil before application.
Cedarwood oil can but used in diffusers in your home and as a spray for your yard.
Not all Cedarwood oils can be used on your pets.  Some of the natural ingredients in certain cedar oils pose hazards, so make sure to look for cedar oils sourced from Texas Red Cedar and Eastern Red Cedar.
Lavender Essential Oil
One of my favorite scents is lavender, so I was thrilled to discover it also acts as a flea repellent!
It can be diluted and rubbed directly on your dog’s skin to help repel fleas and soothe irritation from flea bites.
It can be planted as a beautiful, fragrant, flea-repelling part of your landscape to keep fleas at bay in and around your lawn.
The only downfall is that it won’t actually kill fleas. It only serves as a repellent.
Lemon and Lemongrass Essential Oils
These two oils smell similar but vary greatly in their source, chemical make up, and properties. Both are good for repelling fleas.
Lemon and lemongrass essential oils are very popular for use as a flea repellent because their scent is pleasant.
Making a spray with these oils and using it around your house will make your house smell like you just cleaned instead of attempted to ward off a flea infestation.
These oils should not be used directly on cats, but may be used on their beds and towers.
And as with the lavender oil, it doesn’t actually kill fleas, only repels them.
Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint is a great oil to help repel fleas that also smells great!
You can make a spray by diluting the peppermint oil with apple cider vinegar and water to use around your house and even directly on your dog.
Keep in mind that peppermint oil shouldn’t be used on your cats.
Putting the oil on your dog’s skin in a mixture with some coconut oil can soothe the irritation, but only use it with larger breeds.
Rosemary Essential Oil
Dog owners only, because rosemary oil can be toxic to cats. It is helpful in repelling fleas though.
It has antiseptic properties and is great to use as a rinse after giving your dog a bath.
Mix the oil with a little apple cider vinegar and water as your pup’s final rinse to help keep fleas at bay.
Clove Essential Oil
Clove oil is another helpful insecticide in your arsenal against fleas.
This oil can be added to your laundry when you wash your dog’s bedding.
It’s also a good oil to add to your dog’s collar.
A warning, however, cats and clove oil do not mix.
Basil Essential Oil
Basil essential oil contains compounds that repel annoying pests like fleas and mosquitoes.
Not only is basil essential oil is a natural repellent, but the basil plant is as well. It not only adds beauty to your landscape, but will also help repel fleas.
It’s also a great addition to pizza and let’s be real.  Who doesn’t love a good pesto?
Thyme Essential Oil
Thyme essential oil is a great pesticide, but it is also a fungicide and bactericide.
Using thyme oil will kill fleas and keep your dog and your home protected from an infestation.
This is another great plant to add to your herb garden to help repel fleas in your yard.
Ways to Use Essential Oils as Flea Repellent
Essential oils can be use in many different ways as a flea repellent.  The best method depends on the type of oil you choose to use as well as the strength of the essential oil.
Some essential oils can be diluted and applied directly on the skin to repel fleas and to soothe your dog’s skin.
Then there are essential oils that you shouldn’t put directly on your pet but instead sprinkle on their dog bed, dog house, and around other areas of your home to help repel fleas.
Other essential oils (like lavender or cedar oil) can be mixed into a spray bottle with apple cider vinegar and water and applied to your dog’s bed, crate, dog house, and your rugs and upholstered furniture.
Some oils can be blended into a base such as coconut oil so that you can apply them on your dog.
Before brushing, dip your dog’s brush into a solution of essential oil mixed into water. Cedar oil is great for this.
You can sock your dog’s collar (literally use a sock; cut a hole in the toe and slip it over the length of your dog’s collar) and add a few drops to the cloth to make a DIY flea collar with essential oils to help repel the fleas. Another method to achieve the same results is to use a bandana for this purpose if your dog wants to be flea free AND adorable.
Final Thoughts on Using Essential Oils Against Fleas
Essential oils are a great way to help repel fleas from your pet as well as your home, but as is always my advice, speak to your vet before you try anything new with your pet.
Using essential oils may not always be enough to get rid of fleas by themselves. They are oils, not magical potions.
You’ll still need to put in the work and make sure to wash anything where your pet has been sleeping like rugs, upholstered furniture, and washable pet beds. You may have to go through more than one life cycle of fleas to take care of all the pests.
Repeated exposure to essential oils is a lot healthier, not to mention more pleasant, an option than repeated exposure to dangerous and toxic chemicals.  Essential oils are a safer choice for you, your pet, and your home to kill and repel fleas.
