Saint Andre Bessette C.S.C. 1845-1937 Feast day: January 6

Brother Andre, a French Canadian, came to the Brothers of the Holy Cross in 1870 with a note from his pastor saying “I am sending you a saint”. The Brothers are a teaching order and Andre at 25, still could not read or write and had stomach problems (that he had for his whole life). At the request of the Bishop of Montreal, he was ordained a consecrated religious Brother, and given the position as doorkeeper at the Notre Dame College. (A position he had for 40 years, perfect for praying with the people). He had a great devotion to St. Joseph and the poor and afflicted. In 1904, he started building the St. Joseph Oratory in Montreal with nickels and dimes he had collected. It was completed in 1955 as a basilica. Millions of people were and still are, cured through his prayers and the intercession of St. Joseph. Today Saint Andre Bessette is known as the “Miracle Man of Montreal”. {website}

Hungry

“You’re not you when you’re hungry.”

Done with a wonderfully snarky sense of humor, the long-running ad campaign for Snickers works on so many levels.

It even has the added bonus of being true. We are not ourselves when we’re hungry.

And it’s not just in terms of good nutrition and being physically healthy. It impacts our emotional well-being and our moods, our wisdom and our intelligence. Whether we respond well to problems and get along with others. Our basic ability to learn and to work.

Every part of us suffers when we’re hungry.

In case you wondered why food pantries, soup kitchens, and school breakfast and lunch programs are so important.

But it doesn’t stop there. This dynamic applies to every aspect of our lives.

In this season of resolutions and building good habits, make sure that you take care good care of all of you. Even the eternal parts of you.

Whether it’s a good podcast (Fr. Mike Schmitz’s “The Bible in a Year” is amazing), a good book (I’m re-reading Benedict XVI’s Jesus of Nazareth series), or the Good Book, find a way each day to feed your soul.

Whatever you do, spend some time each day with God in prayer.

It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. But do take a moment to be quiet, to be still, to just be with the One who will always love you, and who always has. And (per Benedict XVI) “to accept being loved by God.”

As St. Andre Bessette (today’s saint) puts it, “If you ate only one meal a week would you survive? It is the same for your soul.”

Happy Canada Day, one and all!

I love my country so much. I have such enormous gratitude for the freedoms I enjoy. Our history is rich and adventurous. Some of the most incredible people in the world live here and I am stunned I get to know them and love them.

We as a nation have struggles, and past mistakes that haunt us, and sometimes make some royally bad choices. But that's not our identity, any more than a person is the sum of their sins.

All my non-Canadian friends, I wish I could show you the beauties of our our culture and heritage beyond those Buzzfeed-type lists and fun conversations about pronunciation. I wish I could introduce you to how different each region is, in its personality, landscape, and quirks.

I wish I could blazon into your minds the stories of our Canadian heroes - Samuel de Champlain, Chief Tecumseh, Madeleine de Vercheres, Kateri Tekakwitha, Jean de Brebeuf and his companions, Andre Bessette, Wolfe and Montcalm, Mary Reay.

I wish we could sit by the fire together and sing our folk songs, full of the rhythm of life in Canada in so many eras.

I wish I could have book discussion groups with you about our awesome Canadian authors, some well-known, others not -Leacock, Montgomery, Service, Moodie.

I wish we could have fun mythbusting a bunch of the "everyone knows" about Canada together (a lot of the popular knowledge online applies only to Ontario - it would be like it you generalized "Americans are like this" based only on knowledge about one state.)

But since that's not all possible, let me wish you all my love from Canada. It's good to love our countries, no matter what our leadership or mistakes are. We fix our mistakes through love, not hate, I say. You can have your eyes wide open and still be patriotic.

Happy Canada Day, wherever you are.

Just done

How many times can I screw this up?

How badly can I screw this up? Before you’re just done with me.

Questions like this can really haunt us in a relationship. Because everyone has their breaking point. And because, if we’re honest with ourselves, you and I have within us the (all too often realized) capacity to screw up any relationship.

I’m not talking about intentional stuff. Our problem is more subtle. Whether it’s through what we do or say without thinking. Or what we fail to do. You and I have some serious skills in this area.

If we’ve ever wondered why someone has abandoned us, why they’re just done with us? The odds are that you and I are at least part of the reason why.

It’s something we don’t like to think about. Because it makes us wonder which relationship we’re going to screw up next. And who’s going to be just done with us.

Which is why today’s Gospel is so important. After all Peter has done. Denying Jesus on Good Friday. Abandoning his ministry and going back to his old job.

After giving Jesus every reason to be done with him – to treat Peter just like Peter treated Him – Jesus doesn’t throw away their relationship. Jesus invites Peter to come back, to come home.

The simple truth? Our capacity to screw up any relationship is a tiny, feeble thing – when compared to the love of God for us.

Because God has no interest in throwing away His relationship with you.

There is nothing that you can do to change that. Nothing that will make God say, “I’m just done with you.”

No matter what you’ve done, God will not abandon you.

No matter how far you’ve gone, God is inviting you to come back, to come home.

Friday 6th January 2023 in the Season of Christmas is the feast of St André Bessette, popularly known as Brother André. (1845 - 1937). Canadian. Religious Brother of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. Miracle worker when alive. More miracles now from Heaven.

Today Friday, 6th January is also the First Friday in 2023. Start the New Year with a bang by embracing the Sacred Heart of Jesus devotion.

What is the contribution of Brother André to the building up of the mystical Body of Christ?

#1. St André Bessette had a great devotion to St Joseph, the holy Spouse of the Immaculate Virgin Mary. He helped in the revival of the cult of St Joseph.

#2. His special commitment to the afflicted and the poor could not be unconnected with the torrents of the miracles his ministry unleashed while he was alive and even more when he is in Heaven. Jesus Christ is glorified when we honor the saints. He pays back so to speak His favored saints by granting many miracles through their intercessions.

In the Gospel of today from Mark 1: 7 - 11, please note the humility of St John the Baptist. Our Saint of today, Brother André was noted by all for his humility.

“One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

This is humility.

who are your favorite saints? i’ve been a catholic all my life but i never really knew that much about many of them. after doing some deeper research my favorites are probably st catherine of siena, st michael the archangel, st francis of Assisi, and st dominic savio

Ahh I'm so glad to hear you're exploring and learning more about our heavenly family! I love St. Michael the Archangel, but I don't know St. Dominic Savio yet.

I have a lot of beloved Saints because I've always needed a lot of prayers. That said, I don't feel as close to them as I did earlier on in my journey. I think I've very much settled into a rhythm of resting with Our Lady and St. Joseph because of how important they are to me and the unique honour they have among the Saints, The rest sort of lovingly interject themselves. It's very sweet actually; I have a special place in my heart for a lot of Saints but because of that, having a strong relationship with them individually sort of comes in waves. Right now a big wave seems to be St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful mother to help me in my pride, but when I was really struggling with the death of a certain person and the impact they'd had on my life, St. Maria Goretti was right there with me.

My Confirmation Saint is St. Veronica (the hemorrhaging woman in the Gospels and, in Sacred Tradition, the woman who wiped Christ's face with her veil while He was carrying the Cross) because of an experience I had during the Holy Rosary and in meditative prayer on some childhood trauma. I don't necessarily feel particularly close to her relationally, but I often ask for her intercession. A similar case with St. Jude. St. Andre Bessette and Bl. Solanus Casey are very important to me, and an old friend I haven't spoken much with is St. Elizabeth of the Trinity. Honestly, I have a personal litany of Saints I pull out sometimes that I could share if you're interested, just because so many Saints have been such wonderful friends at different points in my walk with God. I also still ask for my ex's grandmother's intercession because I'm convinced she was a Saint.

But yeah, although I have lot of Saints I pray with, I definitely feel closest to St. Joseph. Of all the Saints, I genuinely feel a relationship with him and a presence about him that I don't encounter elsewhere. I can't quite articulate the role his intercession has had on me properly. I love him so much,
