A Simple Favor Movie Review
Stephanie is a single mother with a parenting vlog who befriends Emily, a secretive woman who has a child at the same elementary school. When Emily goes missing, Stephanie takes it upon herself to investigate.
I really wanted to like A Simple Favor – after all, I read the book after seeing the movie trailer and thinking it looked interesting. Unfortunately, I didn’t particularly enjoy the book, mostly due to the characters themselves, rather than the actual mystery. However, I remember thinking that the narrative would likely play out better as a film – and yet that is not at all how I felt watching it. Ultimately, I was pretty bored throughout the whole thing.
Just like the book, I had absolutely no interest in any of the characters. But worse still, unlike the book I just could not get into the mystery/thriller aspect of it. One might argue that could be because I’d already read the book and knew the ending, however I usually read the book first and don’t tend to find that a problem in watching the film. Oftentimes it actually increases the level of anticipation.
Somehow the presentation of the mystery was just not at all engaging, and many details were added/changed from the original novel as if to make it more exciting. Instead it just felt increasingly convoluted and ridiculous. I won’t go into detail about the changes, they are easy to read about online, but the film does try to add more drama to Emily’s background and changes the ending quite a bit. And it just didn’t work for me.
My review of the book
