"Men of the Navy Learn How to Handle Rifles and Bayonets at Canada's Largest Training Establishment," Windsor Star. July 8, 1943. Page 5. ---- YES, the Navy knows how to handle a rifle and bayonet, too. Pictured at the left above are new entries receiving instruction in hand-to-hand fighting at Deep Brook, Nova Scotia, where H.M.C.S. Cornwallis is now Canada's largest naval training establishment. Commander Geoffrey McClintock, R.C.N., shown in the centre, is the ship's Executive Officer. He was a midshipman in H.M.S. Centurion at the Battle of Jutland. Because physically fit men are happier, think faster, work harder, fight better, the Royal Canadian Navy insists that its men receive the best physical and recreational training possible. In the vacation-land atmosphere, strong bodies, as seen in the beach panorama at the right, are built to man the ships.

Simbi water spirits are revered in Hoodoo originating from Central African spiritual practices. When Africans were enslaved in the United States, they blended African spiritual beliefs with Christian baptismal practices. Enslaved African Americans prayed to Simbi water spirits during their baptismal services. In 1998, in a historic house in Annapolis, Maryland called the Brice House archaeologists unearthed Hoodoo artifacts inside the house that linked to the Kongo people. These artifacts are the continued practice of the Kongo's minkisi and nkisi culture in the United States brought over by enslaved Africans. For example, archeologists found artifacts used by enslaved African Americans to control spirits by housing spirits inside caches or nkisi bundles. These spirits inside objects were placed in secret locations to protect an area or bring harm to slaveholders. "In their physical manifestations, minkisi (nkisi) are sacred objects that embody spiritual beings and generally take the form of a container such as a gourd, pot, bag, or snail shell. Medicines that provide the minkisi with power, such as chalk, nuts, plants, soil, stones, and charcoal, are placed in the container." Nkisi bundles were found in other plantations in Virginia and Maryland. For example, nkisi bundles were found for the purpose of healing or misfortune. Archeologists found objects believed by the enslaved African American population in Virginia and Maryland to have spiritual power, such as coins, crystals, roots, fingernail clippings, crab claws, beads, iron, bones, and other items assembled together inside a bundle to conjure a specific result for either protection or healing. These items were hidden inside slaves' dwellings. These practices were concealed from slaveholders.

In Darrow, Louisiana at the Ashland-Belle Helene Plantation historians and archeologists unearthed Kongo and Central African practices inside slave cabins. Enslaved Africans in Louisiana conjured the spirits of Kongo ancestors and water spirits by using seashells. Other charms were found in several slave cabins, such as silver coins, beads, polished stones, bones, and were made into necklaces or worn in their pockets for protection. These artifacts provided examples of African rituals at Ashland Plantation. Slaveholders tried to stop African practices among their slaves, but enslaved African Americans disguised their rituals by using American materials and applying an African interpretation to them and hiding the charms in their pockets and making them into necklaces concealing these practices from their slaveholders. In Talbot County, Maryland at the Wye House plantation where Frederick Douglass was enslaved in his youth, Kongo related artifacts were found. Enslaved African Americans created items to ward off evil spirits by creating a Hoodoo bundle near the entrances to chimneys which was believed to be where spirits enter. The Hoodoo bundle contained pieces of iron and a horse shoe. Enslaved African Americans put eyelets on shoes and boots to trap spirits. Archaeologists also found small carved wooden faces. The wooden carvings had two faces carved into them on both sides which were interpreted to mean an African American conjurer who was a two-headed doctor. Two-headed doctors in Hoodoo means a conjurer who can see into the future and has knowledge about spirits and things unknown.

At Levi Jordan Plantation in Brazoria, Texas near the Gulf Coast, researchers suggests the plantation owner Levi Jordan may have transported captive Africans from Cuba back to his plantation in Texas. These captive Africans practiced a Bantu-Kongo religion in Cuba, and researchers excavated Kongo related artifacts at the site. For example, archeologists found in one of the cabins called the "curer's cabin" remains of an nkisi nkondi with iron wedges driven into the figure to activate its spirit. Researchers found a Kongo bilongo which enslaved African Americans created using materials from white porcelain creating a doll figure. In the western section of the cabin they found iron kettles and iron chain fragments. Researchers suggests the western section of the cabin was an altar to the Kongo spirit Zarabanda

I grew up on the Atlantic coast of Sussex County and your bird photos make me nostalgic for home, so the fact that you're moving to my new neck of the woods makes me excited for all the NEW places you're going to take bird pics that make me go "WOW, I'VE BEEN THERE!" Patapsco Valley, Harper's Ferry, Hereford, Dahlgren/King George, Centerville, Billy Goat Trail on the Potomac... Annapolis is a 1-2 hour drive from a bunch of really different and interesting ecosystems.
woop, I just replied to your reply in my post before seeing this, haha, but!!! thank you for ALL the recs!!! excited to see them Maryland birbs <3 (and it'll take a while for me to get through the Delaware pic backlog, so there's still some nostalgia to be had!)

Mirgation is a key aspect of human life, and a universal commonality in the United States. The lineage of everybody in this county comes from somewhere else. Whether that be the forced relocation of slavery, or the willing migration of other groups throughout our history. Even the Native Americans immigrated here via land bridge 30,000 years ago. America truly is a country of immigrants, though many like to pretend that it isn't. Immigration continues to be a common reality of this country to this day. People immigrate to America for a variety of different reasons. Everyone's story is different, with many factors at play that informed their decision. My friend Kai is one such person. He has given me permission to share his story here.
Kai's mom's is from okinawa Japan, and his Dad is from hawaii. They met eachother when his Dad joined the airforce and was stationed in Okinawa. Eventually Kai was born in Japan. He grew up speaking Japanese in japanese daycare, though he started learning english at age 5 when he went to school on the military base. After he started school, he didn't speak Japanese regularly until he was 13 after he started studyingJapanese for school. Kai attended American schools in Japan until 12 grade and decided to go to Hawaii for college.
This decision to move countries was informed by a few factors. Most importantly was the fact that he already knew how to speak English fluently due to his time in American Schools at the military base. Monetarily it was informed due to the fact that he got a full scholarship to the school he would be attending, and that he had family in Hawaii that he could stay with.
As he was finishing college, his Dad got stationed in Annapolis Maryland. His parents wanted him to come with them as they are very close to eachother and as Kai described them, slightly overbearing. He ended up moving to Maryland with them just before Covid started.
People's decisions to immigrate are rooted in many different factors. In Kai's case, it was socially, monetarily, and culturally convenient for him to move to the United States. He also faced little adversity during his relocation due to his military upbringing.

Oy. Yesterday was the State high school football championship game. Weirdly, both the teams playing were from our county. That’s improbable because our county has a population of 72,000 and four high school, while in the metro areas some counties have over a million residents. Nevertheless, both teams, and all the family and fans, drove down to Annapolis for the Big Game.
My daughter’s bf only played very briefly; his leg has been hurting him. Our team won (in what must have been a close, hard-fought game) and everybody schlepped back home again. By evening, though, his leg pain was so severe he couldn’t walk, and his parents took him to the ER. Had to carry him to the truck, in fact, which can’t have been easy. They waited HOURS in the ER. Never got help. Apparently other people were waiting 5 - 6 hours and then just giving up and leaving. I can’t imagine having to sit with your teen in grave pain for hours on end and then eventually just give up, because no one is getting help. And if there was a specific issue in the ER, and they knew they weren’t going to be able to help people - why didn’t the staff let folks know when they came in that they very likely wouldn’t be seen, or that it would be X-number of hours wait?
So they gave up and carried (once again) their very large son out of the er and took him home, probably with a pinched nerve in his back, definitely in massive pain.
Hard being a parent. Especially when you’re doing your best for your kid and can’t get them help.

N.S. DNRR issue Friday evening update on wildfires as total drops to 11
With a swath of wildfires burning across Nova Scotia, the province’s Department of Natural Resources and Renewables (DNRR) has issued a Friday evening update on the status of the fires.
In Shelburne County, the fire at Barrington Lake has now reached a record growth of 23,015 hectares -- the equivalent of 230 square kilometres.
About 90 DNRR firefighters, along with more than 40 volunteer and municipal crew members, are on the scene of the fire. That’s in addition to five helicopters, a water bomber from Newfoundland and Labrador, and other heavy equipment.
In Shelburne, a fire on Lake Road remains out of control at an estimated 114 hectares. Fifteen DNRR firefighters are responding to the fire.
In Yarmouth County, a fire in Pubnico remains out of control, covering 163 hectares. The province says 20 DNRR firefighters are on scene.
More air and heavy equipment resources are also being coordinated to battle the three wildfires on Nova Scotia’s South Shore.
Meanwhile in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), the Tantallon fire remains 50 per cent contained but is still out of control at an estimated 950 hectares. Firefighters on scene include 40 from DNRR, 100 from HRM, and nine from the Department of National Defence. Five helicopters are also involved in the efforts, as well as an N.L. water bomber.
The province says containment efforts in the Tantallon fire include dozer breaks, natural breaks and nearby highways.
A fifth fire, located in nearby Hammonds Plains, is 100 per cent contained. Ten HRM volunteer firefighters are on scene, where the fire is holding at four hectares.
Four wildfires were extinguished Friday in Annapolis, Cumberland, Halifax and Kings counties, bringing the number of active wildfires in Nova Scotia down to 11.
