Ichi was a form of facial ritual scarification worn by mainly men of the Igbo people of Nigeria. The scarification indicated that the wearer had passed through initial initiation into the aristocratic Nze na Ozo society, thus marking the wearer as nobility. Echoes of this tradition are found in the contemporary derivative word Ichie, which denotes a member of a class of titled chieftains amongst the Igbo.

The scarification was found among men in the Awka-Nri areas and among a few women in the Awgwu and Nkanu areas. Its wearers were authorized to perform ritual cleansing of abominations and to confer titles on people. People with facial marks were regarded as Nri men and were less likely to be taken as slaves. Other parts of Igbo land may have started wearing Ichi as a result of this. There are two styles; the Nri style worn in the Awka-Nri areas, and the Agbaja style worn in the Awgwu and Nkanu areas. In the Nri style, the carved line ran from the center of the forehead down to the chin. A second line ran across the face, from the right cheek to the left. This was repeated to obtain a pattern meant to imitate the rays of the sun. In the Agbaja style, circles and semicircular patterns are added to the initial incisions to represent the moon. These scarifications were given to the representatives of the eze Nri; the mbùríchi. The scarifications were the Nris' way of honoring the sun that they worshipped and was a form of ritual purification.

Post: Understanding the Continental Religious Divide
From the responses to several posts as well as my own personalobservation of society, I can tell that there is a great divide in the religiousdirection of Westerns compared to continental Africans. Westerners are tryingto shed our dependence on the spiritual beliefs of our oppressors whilecontinental Africans are strengthening their beliefs, whether it is forChristianity or Islam. This spiritual trend is due to several factors that withoutgood understanding may alter the quest for unity within the Afrakan race. Westernersare abandoning Christianity and Islam because although we have adopted them overhundreds of years it still hasn’t translated in gaining us respect from ourindoctrinators. If their religion is the ultimate example of their psychologicaldevelopment yet it hasn’t stopped them from hating us then why should wepersist with their beliefs?Conversely, continental Africans are embracing Christianityand Islam in droves. In fact, statistics show that while both religions are fadingworldwide, they are experiencing the highest growth rates in Africa. Why? It isbecause of an intentional process of altering the Thought process of Africans. First, they remove your cultural traditions and replace them with European and Arab traditions. They rape the natural resources from the land and leave Africans with scraps. They stoke war and division between the tribes and when people fall into desperation, they send in Aid organizations and Missionaries to help. The hidden process is (Aid and Religion for Food). Soon you begin tobelieve that anything European and Arab is Good. You begin to think that Western Blacksare ungrateful for the white and Arab man’s help and their religions. Eventually you beginto believe that no one can be more religious than you. We have gone through it beforemy African Brothers and Sisters. We became the best Christians and Muslims andwe live as their neighbors yet we still get hate. Our conclusion therefore is thataccepting their religions does not help us. We both need to go back to the Spiritualbeliefs of our ancestors.#Afrakanrace #AidforReligion #ReligiousDivide #Spirituality https://www.blaqsbi.com/Dek

Adut Akech was born in Sudan (in an area that later became part of South Sudan), but was raised in Kakuma, Kenya. Akech was born on Christmas Day, on the way to Kenya. She was 7 years old when she moved from Kenya along with her mother to Adelaide, Australia as South Sudanese refugees seeking asylum. They also had relatives there. Akech has five siblings.
Tumblr media
Akech was known as "Mary", her Christian second name in Adelaide, as Australian teachers found it difficult to pronounce her name.
Tumblr media
Be proud of African names, and stop falling into the trap of saying all African names are hard to pronounce. Like European names are easy

The Igbo people (English: /ˈiːboʊ/ EE-boh,US also /ˈɪɡboʊ/ IG-boh; also spelled Ibo and historically also Iboe, Ebo, Eboe,Eboans,Heebo;natively Ṇ́dị́ Ìgbò) are an ethnic group in Nigeria. They are primarily found in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States. A sizable Igbo population is also found in Delta and Rivers States. Ethnic Igbo populations are found in Cameroon,Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea, as migrants as well as outside Africa. There has been much speculation about the origins of the Igbo people, which are largely unknown.Geographically, the Igbo homeland is divided into two unequal sections by the Niger River—an eastern (which is the larger of the two) and a western section. The Igbo people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa.
