Anne Lister: I’m gonna go through your personal drawers and see what needs changing.
*opens Ann's dresser draw to find it’s full on unshelled peanuts*
Anne Lister: What are you, a zoo elephant?
Ann Walker: Those are my night peanuts.
Anne Lister: There shouldn’t be day peanuts and night peanuts. They’re just peanuts!

Sorry to bother tour, but about "Anne getting naked only with Ann" from the gif, Did she really undress in front of her? Did was that written in the diaries?
That scene will be so intimate... I think I will cry when the scene happens.
hello, about my comment on the second gif here – I think in the series they're gonna show Anne completely giving herself to Ann and I do believe that it will happen only with Ann Walker. I hope the whole thing is gonna play out as a sort of proof of how much Anne really loves Ann (since – I guess – we will not see her getting this close with anyone else). I do remember an interview where Suranne and Sophie talk about this scene and how important it is in the context of the Ann(e)s relationship in the show.
In real life Anne completely gave herself to Ann – meaning she got naked with her in bed – only after Ann agreed to "marry" her.
Wednesday 12, February 1834 > Long capital grubblling so that little time for sleep – she is to give me a ring and I her one in token of our union as confirmed on Monday – breakfast at 9 – Washington came for a little while – Miss Walker’s maid not much fit for packing – I did it all – books and papers etc. etc. in abundance and had not done till 2 – then off to Shibden – Miss Walker ½ hour here with my aunt and a few minutes in my study and off again at 3 ¼ – I went with her in an hour (her own carriage and man and maid) as far as Kings’ Head Inn near Bradford – and walked back and came in at 5/50.. having sauntered up the fields – dinner at 6 ½ – coffee and then asleep on the sofa – with my aunt from 8 ¾ to 9 ¾ – then with my father and Marian and sat up talking till 10/50.. – Affectionate to Miss Walker and told her I should not be long without seeing her – she desired me not to write anything particular – she meant of affection – which I promised – I certainly feel fond of her now, and if I was once really near her (no drawers on) and she was pretty well satisfied I should be at ease – she has often said she wished to be near myself –  civil letter came this morning from Quillacq Calais, to say the plate was sent off to Laffitte's –  and tonight letter from Lady Harriet – vide Friday – fine day – a hail shower as I returned over the hills after leaving Miss Walker this evening F47° now at 11 p.m. – my cousin came gently just after breakfast – [SH:7/ML/E/16/0168]
The 27th of February is when they finally exchange rings, a gesture which tightens and confirms their union.
Tumblr media
Thursday 27, February 1834 > No drawers on last night – first time and first attempt to get really near her [Ann Walker] – did not succeed very well, but she seemed tolerably satisfied – Rainy morning – could not have my own carriage, and [Meyers] could not get Miss Walker’s ready till 12 – breakfast at 9 ¾ – a little French – I ½ asleep over it – off to Langton at 12/50.. – damp rainy disagreeable day – She was poorly and tired tho she had got up so well this morning – I saw there was much nervousness about going to Langton but took no notice – I asked her to but [buy?] the gold wedding ring I wore and lent her six pence to pay me for it – she would not give it [to] me immediately but wore it till we entered the village of Langton and then put it on my left third finger in token of our union – which is now understood to be confirmed for ever tho little or nothing was said – At Langton at 3/05.. only Mrs. Norcliffe and Charlotte at home – surprised but very glad to see us, and very kind and attentive – CN [Charlotte Norcliffe] had heard of my arrival from Mrs. Milne – Mrs. Norcliffe now dines at 3, that we sat down to dinner in about ¼ hour – coffee – tea afterwards about 6 ¼ – Miss Walker much please with Mrs. Henry Robinson’s blazoning and with Miss Best’s drawings – our visit went off very well – all sides sufficiently pleased apparently – came away at 7/20.. and home at 9 ¾ – coffee – sat talking till 11 ¾ – glad we went – the Norcliffes very civil to her – her shyness went off and she seemed much pleased with her visit – Rainy day and evening – On the margin, in code, Anne notes: the ring [to] Miss Walker [SH:7/ML/E/16/0174]
Being near – for Anne – means to be completely naked during sex (she does specify when she keeps her drawers on).
Keep in mind tho that in real life Anne didn’t get naked only with Ann Walker. As I said, I think this will be different in the series and we’ll see Anne getting this close only with Ann, but let’s wait and see.
I hope I answered your question :) can’t wait to see that scene by the way, I’ll be like this 🤞🙏🏻 for the whole time praying it is gonna be glorious.

SLEEP HABITS
Tumblr media
NAME:  Anne Lister.
RESIDENCE:  Shibden Hall, Halifax --- mostly, unless she is moving in with one of her many wives or travelling recklessly around the globe, as one is wont to do.
TYPE OF BED: An elaborately carved four-poster bed with heavy red curtains. However, she will also sleep aboard ships & carriages, in various hotels or guest rooms, in the kitchen (to escape Ann’s snoring), in rather creative & vaguely Anne-shaped places like wheelbarrows, and in your wife’s bed.
NUMBER OF BLANKETS:  Two duvets in summer; two duvets and an additional woollen blanket in winter.
NUMBER OF PILLOWS: Two.
TYPE OF CLOTHING: Men’s drawers and a knee-length nightgown, with an addition of woollen stockings in winter. She keeps her hair in a side-braid fastened with a slim white ribbon.
DO THEY SLEEP WITH COMPANY?: Preferably.
DO THEY SLEEP BETTER WITH COMPANY?: Yes. In fact, whenever Anne is unfortunate enough to have to sleep all alone, without the blessing of female companionship, she will be in actual pain and lament her terrible fate all night. She needs to be the big spoon to a lovely woman’s little spoon or she will literally die.
DOES IT MATTER WHERE THEY SLEEP?:  Nope. This woman will and does sleep anywhere she fits.
WHAT DO THEY DO IF THEY CANNOT FALL ASLEEP?: Masturbate. :(
FREQUENT DREAMS, NIGHTMARES: Anne’s dreams usually feature old exes (oh! the sentiment!), her current love affair (the drama! the horniness!), or whatever business procedures linger on her mind. It’s exhausting to be a lesbian.
DEEP SLUMBER OR NAPS: Both.
WHEN DO THEY SLEEP: I wish I knew. Anne wishes she knew. She has absolutely no sleeping schedule and will simply go to bed whenever her body gives up on her ... or whenever she has a responsible female companion to tuck her in.
WHAT COULD WAKE THEM UP: A big shout and a punch in the face.
EARLY OR LATE RISER: Loser who wants to wake up early, resents herself for sleeping in, and/or dawdles away her early morning hours by thinking about her girlfriend.

A hymn to Venus
Ship: Anne Lister x various women
Warnings: 18+, minors dni; orgasm control; possessiveness; corruption kink.
a/n: This is the first fic I ever published, almost 3 years ago now! It's crazy how fast time flies. This is very unedited and very much the work of a beginner, be nice please.
Summary: ‘’She always found it unpleasant not to be the first lover in a woman’s life and thus having to face comparison. She much preferred virgins. ‘’
Anne thinks about all the girls she got to first.
━━━━━━━━━ ✯¸.•´*¨`*•✿ ✿•*`¨*`•.¸✯ ━━━━━━━━━
Anne had always liked lovemaking. It was one of the few things that came so naturally to her, touching a woman felt like coming home.
She liked virgins best. Girls, sheltered by their relatives who were determined to keep them pure. Girls who hadn't even been kissed before, who had no idea what passion even meant. Most of the time they didn’t know what to make of the burning feeling in the pit of their stomach, which Anne knew to be lust. True, they weren’t the easiest to persuade but their reactions were the purest, the most honest.
Nothing compared to touching a girl for the first time, after days, weeks, or sometimes even months of hard work. After complimenting them, charming them, seducing them. Once she finally got up under their skirts, under the heavy petticoat and their drawers. Nothing could compare to that first moment of contact, of feeling the slick skin hidden between a girl’s legs.
Oh, they would flush scarlet in mock embarrassment and when she slipped a finger or two into them, their eyes would widen, almost comically. She loved it, knowing she got there first. Knowing she was allowed this privilege of showing a girl the ways of pleasure. Looking up at a girl’s face as she kissed their clit for the first time, was beyond wonderful. But nothing truly compared to the way they looked when they came. When Anne had her mouth on them, she would place two hands on their hips, take the girl’s clit in her mouth, and suck. And without fail, every time, the poor dears would lose their minds. They would shudder, gasp and twitch. Their hands would twist and pull at her hair until her scalp burned, but it was worth it. Because when they came, they were a vision. Anne never did see anything more beautiful than a girl at the hight of pleasure. How she loved seeing them like that.
Most of all though, she loved the feeling of power this all gave her, the mere knowledge that she was the one who was making these perfectly respectable young ladies bend to her will. Nothing made her feel as powerful as the sweet moments when she found herself knuckle deep in a girl, her thumb pressing on their clit. Oh, the sounds they made for her. They would bury their faces in the crook of her neck and moan. Delicious sounds that made her feel hot all over. Some girls only gasped, others begged and said her name over and over as though it were a prayer. Some she had to quiet with a hand pressed firmly over their mouths, lest they alert anyone to what they were doing.
Occasionally Anne fancied herself wicked. When she felt that a girl was close, sometimes, she’d stop, just to watch them. Some girls, the filthier ones Anne thought privately, would buck their hips and whine. Oh, that was so perverse Anne never could leave a girl like that hanging. Others, the more feisty ones, would growl and kick their legs. Others still, would cry. That surprised her most of all. Wicked though she was she never could find it in her heart to not console girls like that. She would kiss at their tears, whisper sweet nothings in their ears and stroke them gently through their orgasm.
Yes, Anne had always liked lovemaking. And one the occasions where she found herself alone in her bed, drawers sticky with want, she would think of all the girls she got to first.

Hey! I'm currently just starting to learn about witchcraft and spirituality, and found your blog and i love it :) do you have any book recommendations about the topic? Or some general advice for baby witches? 💗 thank you!
Yes I do actually, and thank you for my first ever ask :')))
So I have a few books. You may find them helpful and you may not, everybody is different.
The first witch book I ever got brand new was called Witch: Unleashed. Untamed. Unapologetic. by Lisa Lister and it was a sleek, black cover book and the title was all shiny and silvery. I admittedly still haven't finished it 😅 but I've skimmed through it on more than one occasion. It talks about sabbats and the wheel of the year, intuition, divination practices like tarot and pendulums, casting circles, setting up sacred workspaces, working with elements of nature, using herbs and crystals, a bit on spell casting, and it even touches on the magickal correspondences to days of the week and times of day, etc.
Overall it's a wonderful book and I definitely recommend it. I don't think that this book is Wicca-specific either, which is something I enjoy because I don't center my practice around being Wiccan (which is a religion, not a type of the Craft itself). The other books i have are hand-me-downs from my mother, since she stopped practicing a while back (she's talking about getting back into it tho, and i hope i still get to keep the books lol)
The rest of the books I won't go into detail about unless you want me to, so I'll just list them here :) they also aren't necessarily about the craft in general, some of them are specific to different parts of the craft
Grimoire for the Green Witch: A Complete Book of Shadows by Ann Moura (This is the one I was lent most recently and it leans slightly more Wiccan in it's references to deities)
Tarot for Beginners: An Easy Guide to Understanding & Interpreting the Tarot by P. Scott Hollander (I haven't read much of this one because my deities requested that I learn on my own)
The Complete Book of Chakra Healing by Cyndi Dale (This is one of the books my mom still keeps to herself lol)
Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem & Metal Magic by Scott Cunningham (first book she ever lent me)
By Candlelight: Rites for Celebration, Blessing & Prayer by Janina Reneé (first book of spells I got lent)
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Numerology (second edition) by Kay Lagerquist, Ph.D. and Lisa Lenard (just found this in the bottom of my drawer, I've never read it because I forgot it existed, but now that I'm getting into numerology I might read it lol)
Runes for Beginners: A Guide to Reading Runes in Divination, Rune Magic, and the Meanings of the Elder Futhark Runes by Lisa Chamberlain (so many Lisa's, I'm just realizing this- this was the second book ever bought for me)
And in case you find yourself leaning more Wiccan, here's one of my mom's old books which she said helped her out a lot :³
Wicca: A Year and a Day by Timothy Roderick
Another good thing to do for baby witches in relation to books is to go to your local library and check out every book they have on mythology, especially any pantheon you feel especially drawn to, whether it be Hellenic (Greek), Roman, Kemetic (Egyptian), Nordic, Celtic (Irish and Welsh), etc.
I hope this helps!! I'm so happy you asked me this, never be afraid to ask me anything else, i LOVE it when people ask me stuff and also thanks for complimenting my blog fjwjcjsn
(Edit: I'm so sorry if you can't find some of the books I listed, they may not be available to buy anymore, my mom got most of these YEARS ago)

Sunday 1 May 1836: SH:7/ML/E/19/0036
9
- The notes written last night vid. above went at 8 this morning - finish, dullish morning - F50° at 9 ¾ am at which hour breakfast till Mr. Husband came at 10 ¼ Thomas Pearson soon came about the 2 cows - bade £15 for them  would not give more than £16 nor would I take less than £17 supposing myself to allow him 20/. profit - agreed that he should take them to Atherton fair on Thursday sell them for me and have 5/.  a piece for selling them whatever price he should sell them for - then Holt came and about 11 Mr. Jubb - kept him perhaps near ½ hour - mentioned about Mrs. Briggs - Mr. J- to give her a hint to conciliate Oddy - mentioned about the Dispensary - suggested that an appeal be made to the public for 1/8 or what not upon their subscriptions to raise a thousand more (£4900 subscribed about £1700 to give for the ground) - said I would give £5 towards the fitting up of the museum - mentioned having heard talk of an exchange - if a better site than I had could be got I should be glad  - if not, I had a plan of my own which, if nobody could produce a better, I would aid as well as I could - said it might not be more costly than what might be thought of by others - I could at least answer for its beauty - just hinted at a sort of thing like the Bourse at Paris the entrance end fronting Northgate and one side fronting St. Anne’s street - alluding to Rawsons’ joint stock bank Mr. J- seemed evidently all in its favour - said they had allotted him very few shares - £7000 worth of shares were applied for at the premium - the profits of the bank at present 10 or 12 thousand a year - on the 2 connexions (H-x and Huddersfield) the latter the larger of the 2 - said I was glad to hear it - I dared say, I knew people who would give up their shares to Mr. J- if he wanted more shares and if the Bank would allow it - offered to do anything I could for Mr. J- in Paris - I thought he seemed rather fearful of giving me any large commission - (for fear of price or what?) - no sum named or hinted at - I simply wrote down in my rough book  (in his presence) ‘Preparations of the eye and ear for Mr. Jubb’ - then with Holt in the north parlour Mr. Husband waiting in the drawing - mentioned about Illingworth - H- thought what I had proposed to advise A- very fair - he (Holt) would not take less than £15 per acre on Charnocks’ coal - about 8 acres and about 3 acres already got - said they had agreed about the 2nd pit (but did not say more on this part of the subject) - Holt’s measurement not done - bad air in the mines - could not get in of a fortnight or 3 weeks some new Thirls driven - Respecting my own concerns agreed to mend Joseph Mann’s price for the Listerwick Long goit - now that stone can be had on the spot, he is to get it, and dress and wall and arch and complete the goit (now 2ft x 3ft. 3in) at 9/. per yard up to the north east side of the throw where the stone will wear out and after crossing the throw to have the old price again i.e. 5/6 per yard for labour - Desired as little coal as possible to be got at Walker pit - the trespass to be ascertained by Holt, John Oates, and one other master collier besides our workmen Joseph and Robert Mann - the wheel race to be began of on Tuesday next - Holt says the meer drift would be began of - can be done without damage to Charles Howarth - a whimble hole will give vent enough - said I was anxious about Mrs. Machin’s coal - the children are of age that Samuel Holdsworth has no more power - they will sell but the mother wont - she has only a life estate in the farm - ask Mr. Gray if the children cannot give a tithe good enough and then to let Holt know that he may complete the purchase without troubling his for her signature - then went with Messrs. Holt and Husband to the meer head - Holt satisfied it was be better to take the water in higher up where Messrs. Husband and Mawson pointed out - determined that it shall be done so - then to the meer-drift - the setting in or opening into the meer done yesterday, right - then to the glen and explained where I wanted the Lodge drift stuff to be pulled up - Holt valued the driving at 2/6 per yard, pulling up at 1/6 per yard (a man cannot pull more than 2 square yards per day) and carting to be considered of - I said I calculated the whole at 4/6 per yard the throwing back the soil being extra - then to the Lodge Holt left us - explained a little to Mr. Husband where the stuff should be put (Husband thinks 3000 yards to be moved - I said I thought not exceeding 2000) - then walked with Mr. Husband towards Pump and told him to set the wall in front of the house with its road face in a line along the Shibden hall side of the causeway and finish each ending of the new wall in a quadrant of a circle - Road face to be walled with lime and the old parpoints - face towards Shibden hall dry walling with the stone taken from the wall along the present approach road -  and in front of the carriage house court - left Mr. about 11 /2 and came in wrote as follows to ‘Messrs. Parker and Adam, solicitors H-x’ to go by Frank tonight
SH:7/ML/E/19/0037
‘Shibden hall - Sunday 1 May 1836. Sir - Be so good as send me back Miss Walker’s order upon Messrs. Briggs - she did not know of their prospectus at the time of giving me the order; and I would rather she did not draw out the money just at this time without further consideration - I will give you a check on the Yorkshire District bank for the whole sum required - I am sir, etc etc A. Lister’ - then wrote the following to go tonight to ‘Mr. Rogers Cutler Sheffield PPD’ ‘Shibden Hall 1 May 1836- Sir - I shall be much obliged to you to make me two gardener’s knives, the handles to be such as usual - the blades to be of the usual size but the cutting edge straight  I mean them as presents to foreign gardeners, and shall be glad to have the metal and workmanship the best you can turn out of your shop - Be so good as send a bill in the parcel and direct it to Mrs. Lister to the care of Messrs. Hammersleys, Bankers, London I to be there by the 11th instant - will order payment to be made to your agent in London   I am, sir, your obedient servant A. Lister’ - had just written the above at 3 ¾ pm when Mark Hepworth came - [looking] into account 4 bills = 9.2.6 and the cow £13 and new gin horse 6 guineas + 10/. for his trouble of buying him and still Mark with money paid in a/c and Ruthin at £11.10.0  owes me a balance of £2.11.6 to be paid at the next rent day - the £18 for the 3 Hill top grass fields (he is to pasture all but the new seeds and these he will [mew]) to be paid at Xmas rent-day - somehow got one thing confused with another so that tho’ right at last and all clear, yet a long while pothering and had Mark till long after 4 - then till 7 10 at colliery accounts - dinner at 7 10 sent my letter (1 p. of ½ sheet black edged note paper) to ‘Mr. Rogers, Cutler Sheffield ppd’ and my note (vid. above) to Messrs. P- and A- Marian came and sat with me till about 8 when had Joseph and Robert Mann till 9 - they brought estimate of new approach road making that is rubbling - [laying?]and rubble 1ft. deep and 13ft. 6in. wide (finding everything) at 35/. per rood - Lodge drift.... said I should be obliged to come over again - should be here next Tuesday week - settled that Robert Mann + 3 should go on by day till 7 return at that time - to finish at the back of farmyard - and puddle about the rockwork all that is necessary - and wall up gap in the paddock wall near Greenwood’s cottage and get the farmyard paving done - Gave Joseph his new book beginning with Listerwick Long goit - 2 [entries] = £18 + £15 = £33 and he from this time begins with Mr. Parker - I am to keep Joseph’s old book - had coffee warmed up and sent for Marian and she sat with me till 9 55 when we both went to my aunt - Marian glad I should not be here when she went away at 8 am next Tuesday week - I said I would not be here then on any account - did not like partings - neither of us said more but both seemed to feel the thing and neither liked to dwell upon the subject - I remained with my aunt till 10 ½ - then came upstairs to the blue room - I had wished Marian goodnight in the drawing room - yet came upstairs to me, saying, to wish goodnight and stood talking to me till 11 25 - said if my aunt was poorly she would come and see her for a few days - I said everything would always be ready for her - she asked if I should like her to leave M-‘s mahogany writing desk (the 1st M- ever possessed and which she valued) that Marian has used ever since being here - I said after a moment’s pause, I felt I ought not to like it to be taken - Marian thought perhaps I should not mind about it now - no! no! said I, that ought not to be - I will give you another - Marian stood talking as if she had not resolution to leave me - poor Marian! my heart aches for her and for myself too - but I had talked of Mrs. Briggs and household arrangements and alterations in and additions to the house, and of [?] end of my idea of a plan for an exchange etc talked of anything that seemed not triste - when Marian was gone wrote all but the 1st 12 lines of the last p. and so far of this till 12 10 at night at which hour F35° then poked up my fire and sat at accounts till six in the morning - then an hour looking over my drawers

Wednesday 12 March
7 10/.. 12
|| L
Soft damp spring morning Fahrenheit 55.° at 7 1/2 a.m. out at 7 20/.. - Went for Charles H- [Howarth] - met him 1/2 way - a few drops of rain - Mallinson not here gone to open a vault for Mrs. Holroyde of Priestley Green who died on Sunday - only his man and lad here - Charles and James H- [Howarth] making drawers for butler's pantry cupboard and the mason and glazier, Firth's son (had had Firth himself in the morning) set the sink in the afternoon -
Pickels and co. [company] at the terrace - take it out square 5 yards wide and about 2 yards deep and the slope may be altogether 5 yards more and do 2 yards forward per day, so that they shift about 25 yards a day, the 2 carts going between them 50 Times a day - but 25 yards at 8d. [pence] = 16/8 How is this? 16/8 will not pay for 2 one horse carts and Pickels and 3 men and his son George cart driver, and Robert levelling down after the carts -
breakfast at 9 3/4 with my father in 20 mins. [minutes] - backwards and forwards during the whole day but wrote page 4 first sheet and 1 page and ends of envelope and finished my letter to Miss W- [Walker] and had Charles H- [Howarth] to measure and wrote copy of letter to Wolstenholme to go with Horners sketch of the north parlour for W- [Wolstenholme] to give me a plan of chimney piece and doors and finishing of top 4 feet 6 inches square entrance lobby, and to advise me whether to shew the recession of the studding opposite the window, or not -
At 5 1/2 had Mark Town again and his friend Patchett landlord of the Blue Bottle - I am to inquire Town's the character and if this suits, it is agreed he is to have the hanging hey and Flat field 11 DW. [dayswork] - about 6 perches at £22 per annum he paying all Taxes from the time of entering - to have the 1st. year's rent allowed for tillage, and, in consideration of the hanging hey being fallow, I am to give him £5 on signing the lease, the nature of which I explained - Towards buying lime - He is to have a road for tillage carting and cattle driving from the top of Whiskum road straight across into the flat field and all the fences made good - and to have water from the Little field well - I must some how contrive both for him and Pickels - Told Town (as he would like to have a small house, 3 rooms, at the top of the hill and 20 DW. [dayswork] if he could from next Spring) he had better try to persuade Empsall to give up the Allen car - but this must be amongst themselves - I should not quit E- [Empsall] against his will - Town to pay 5 p.c. [percent] for whatever money laid out on building - dinner at 6 20/.. and coffee in 3/4 hour - then wrote and sent the following to 'Mr. Bewsher Baggage Warehouse Custom house London Post Paid'
'Shibden hall - Wednesday 12 March 1834. Sir - I beg to repeat my thanks for your having taken so much trouble, and having managed so well for me about the plate - To save you the Trouble of going to Hammersley's, I enclose a sovreign; and should I ever have difficulty at the custom house in future, I shall be glad to have you to apply to - I am, sir, your much obliged A Lister'
then wrote out my letter to Wolstenholme - meant the parcel to have gone tonight, but Sarah has not sent the biscuits - 1st. 3 pp. [pages] to Miss W- [Walker] dated yesterday page 4 and envelope and ends dated this morning - Counted upon hearing from her yesterday but no letter this morning! 'What in the world is the matter?' Extract from written yesterday a pity I did not receive her letter till Thomas's return from taking the parcel on Saturday -
'But it, (my letter) was, in fact, an answer, by anticipation to the most important part of your last - As I wrote by parcel, under no fear of Mrs. Bagnold, I shall quote the passage to which I allude for the sake of making my present remarks the more clear - 'I am thinking about Lidgate, and will say more when I write next - qy will it be wise to irritate or brave public opinion further just now? for the same reason, ought, or can or can I accept your Kind offer proposition about Shibden' I am not the person to change Tomorrow, without extraneous cause, the opinion which, on mature deliberation, I have fixed today; nor am I at all likely to ask you, in one breath, to do that, which, in another, I immediately agree, you neither can, nor ought to do - I am still, therefore, convinced as strongly as before, that it would not only be wise, but wisest, for you to do that which I have advised - A proper respect to public opinion is due from all; but it is best shewn by paying a proper respect to ourselves; and that is always difficult under circumstances which seem equivocal - You have made up your mind - You therefore have, or ought to have, courage to avow it' - '.....S.W. [Samuel Washington] will lay the non-Taxpaying business all on me - I now advise you so differently, as I have often told you, from what I should have done under other circumstances, that you really must let the real reason be acknowledged - Think of this when you are Thinking of Lidgate - Good night-'
written today - John's son gone to live with Lord Chesterfield - Good of her to set her face against any long journey so long as my aunt lives - I had given up all thoughts of going to Paris so soon as we once intended -
'The distance from here to York is quite another thing - But if you are bent upon persuading me not to irritate 'or brave public opinion further just now', I have as little chance of going to you, as you have of coming to me'.....'I have done my best, and have surely succeeded, this Time, in practising what you preach - (to write nothing that might not be seen) If I failed beyond your patient endurance before, you had better scold than punish me by not writing at all - How fares it with the onyx? Is it constant to its charge, or dwells it now and then à la Pelotte? Does it as if the £20 was thought enough?' given to Miss Atkinson 'Do pray write as soon as you can - Ever faithfully and affectionately yours AL- Anne Lister'
with my aunt at 9 1/4 for about an hour - read the morning Herald - wrote so far of this page Till 11 1/2 - very fine day - Fahrenheit 58 1/2° now at 11 1/2 p.m.

No longer accepting any smutty fanfic as valid without references to “grubbling,” “linen almost as wet as yesterday morning”, “thorough thrashings” and “thick knitted drawers”. Anne Lister has RUINED me and left me quite unhinged.

Tuesday, 5 May 1840 8.05 1.20
Have slept in my stays and chemise and drawers etc. night shift over for cannot wash or do anything – obliged to wear one same chemise all the time of my cousin and have the same mess as on leaving Moscow and at [Ekiterinograd?] I think it was etc. A- [Ann Walker] might be glued to me for I can neither at any time stir nor be without – it is a miracle if I can escape even for a few minutes walk without her and then she is in the dumps –
Fine morning,  Réaumur 12 1/4° now at 8.55 a.m. breakfast over at 10.25 – then stood till 11.30 rubbing out [pencil] writing in my last little rough book – several of the first pp. [pages] rubbed out 2d. time – [dawdling] over 1 thing or other till 12 o’clock –
Out with A- [Ann Walker] about 12.30  – called and left our card chez les Braïko – then admitted and sat about 1/4 hour with Mme and Melle Kotzebue – then sat perhaps near 1/2 hour with Mme and Melle Golovin – then A- [Ann Walker] tired and came home with her at least to the door – she has monsieur – told Melle K- [Kotzebue] that if I could arrange to attempt Ararat I would write to her – but if I did not write she must take it that I had given up the thought – at Mme Orloff's at 1.30 – the General there, both very civil – he begged me to send him a 200/. bill to see if he could not get it changed for me at a cheaper rate than Mr Besoc's [cuisinier?] – will send the Cossack to speak to General Kotzebue about the route across the country from Baku to Nachitshevan [Nakhichevan] a plain and not safe without a considerable Tartar escort for there are no Cossacks there – the post was attacked 5 days or 5 weeks ago by 10 brigands – the people not against the Russians but are brigands when a good opportunity offers – O- [Orloff] himself would return to Elizabethpol which would be quite as cheap as the other way and would not take more time – I must certainly have a good Tartar escort – before I came away Mme [Griboiedoff?] and Princess Dadian and Princess Orbelianoff came in – they had been calling chez moi – sorry I was not at home – left them chez les Orloffs and went to Mme [Chevostoff?] and sat with her 1/2 hour or more –
Walked back in 1/4 hour and came in at 3.25 bringing 2 London Times Newspapers of Saturday 14 and Monday 16 March 1840 – How quickly arrived here!
Dinner at 4.10 boiled eggs, barley cake and butter and isinglass jelly that A– [Ann Walker] made with our little boiler last night 1st. time very good but rather too stiff –
Before and after dinner reading The Times of Saturday 14th March – vid. [vide] p. [page] 7 column 5: "A man would do well to carry a pencil in his pocket, and write down the thought of the moment those that come unsought for are commonly the most valuable, and should be secured, because they seldom return" Lord Bacon.
• p.5 column 6: the death at Rome of the Honorable Miss Frances Mackenzie 24th February 1840. • p.5 column 6: some interesting subterranean Cyclopean constructions lately discovered 5 miles from Valetta (Malta) bones of animals – fragments of pottery, and some rudely formed figures – Galignani's Messenger –
Have just written so far now at 7 p.m. – then put (sealed) under cover a 200/. note to "à Monsieur Monsieur le Général d' Orloff de la part de Miss Lister" [to Monsieur General Orloff from Miss Lister] and sent it by George about 7 and desired him to go to Mr Dementieff Inspecteur des postes (as recommended by General Kotzebue) for permission for one of his clerks to write out the seal officially marche route with sums to be paid for 5 horses respectively at coach station – I would give the man 3 S.R. [Silver Rubles] for his trouble –
Tea about 8.30 – before the afternoon, read the 2 newspapers London Times of 14 and 16 March last – It seems that the Armenian Patriarch, Abp. [Archbishop] of Etchmiadzin [Vagharshapat] head of all the Armenian churches in India arrived (by a Tartar brig, Captain P. Rough from Singapore) 27 October last at the Dutch settlement of Batavia – 1st time a prelate of the Armenian church had been near that colony; the Armenians consider his visit a great favour – vid. [vide] p. [page] 5 column 3 and same p. [page] and column vid. [vide] – Leipsic [obsolete form of Leipzig] book-trade. 300 foreign book sellers there at the Easter fair – (2 fairs a year) – wherever a book is printed (in Germany) it must be sold at Leipsic – every book seller of any eminence throughout the Confederation has an agent there – the no. [number] of booksellers and music sellers at L- [Leipsic] = 119 – n° of sheets annually printed = about 40,000,000 and weight of bales of books brought there every year = about 30,000 cwt. [centum weight] –
Had just written the last 14 lines and written out accounts of yesterday now at 11.05 – very fine day – then till 1 o’clock writing to M- [Mariana Lawton] 2 1/2 pp. [pages] except a few lines written yesterday morning of p. [page] 1.

Notes: It’s amazing how accurate Anne’s way of recording references is. It is very easy to search for articles she quotes. I personally love the fact that she wrote down the Bacon’s quote, it just makes sense.

Wednesday, 19 February 1840
8
Very fine morning Reaumur 13º near my bed at 8 a.m. fine sunshine soon afterwards – Breakfast at 9 20/’’ to 10 when (ready) Mr. Tournerelli came then the Chef de Police, Colonel Paul … de la part du General Gouverneur to shew us the monument &c. we sat waiting for Mr. Kasobek till near 11 he then arrived and the large 6 place 4 horse sledge of the General Gouverneur and we were off at 11 –
And at 11 1/2 at the Monument erected by order of the Emperor Alexander in 1812 to the memory of the dead, and slain at the taking of Kazan in 1552 – A great quantity of skulls and other bones been found on this emplacement, a little mound  just above water during the time of inondation, they were collected and placed here in a large sarcophagus in a nice dry crypt called here catacombs exactly below the altar in the chapel above –

The Monument to the Fallen seen here during a spill of the Kazanka river. Lithograph by Professor Edward Turnerelli.
The building is a pyramid rising from a base of about 12 yards square? With an Egyptian doorway and flight of steps up to the top of the basement on each of the 4 sides – Of fine sandstone done over with a grey wash, the Egyptian porticos and pediments being white – A very striking funeral monument from every point of view – About a couple of versts from the Town in the midst of the marshy flat or steppe between the town and Volga to the South East and close to the Kasanka –
Tumblr media
The same Monument to the Fallen, here in a photo from the early 20th century.
The chapel very pretty vaulted painted ceilings – On the right on entering picturesque hung up of the Emperor Nicholas on the left that of Ivan IV Vasilievitch, who took Cazan and South East – Very fine view of Kazan the Kremlin and the fine Tartar Tower and mosque-like remain almost adjoining – To the South of the monument (not far off) 2 large, walled, handsome looking monasteries, and adjoining each a village or Slobode (Suburb) of the town and counted in its population of 60,000 inhabitants –
Our 2 gents[gentlemen] seemed to suffer more from the cold than we ourselves – T-[Turnerelli] said it was 25º I thought not so much tho’ as we returned, with a little wind in our (A-‘s[Ann’s] and my own) faces it certainly felt sharpish and I felt my nose more affected than any other part –
In returning went on board a fish-vessel – The ice over the tanks was broken, and the Sterlet and Sabacs, shoveled up – The former of the Sturgeon family – the long snouted excellent fish we have at dinners and the other a sort of Salmon? – Red fish – We had it today at dinner – Ate like salmon  about 2 ft.[feet] or 20 in.[inches] long and about the size and look of a salmon of that length – This worth about the 1/2 the price of the Sterlet – Of the latter the yellow looking the best the most tender and double the value of the white looking – A fish 2 ft.[feet] or 20 in.[inches] long (a thinner fish – Smaller – Less in girth than the Sabac) the yellow 80/- the white and 40/- or 50/- the like the yellow would be at St. Petersburg 300/- and so on – At Astrakhan the yellow would be 10/- -
Then to the Kremlin Cathedral – Handsome all inside painted church – The remains of the 1st Bishop were consumed in the great fire of 1815 but on the right of the altar is his large massive silver Cenotaph or Sarcophagus shaped coffin –
Tumblr media
Peter and Paul Cathedral, mentioned by Anne as the “Kremlin Cathedral”, seen here in a lithograph by Professor Edward Turnerelli.
Then passed the oldest church – The one originally in wood built in the Kasenbin in 1552 and then – Then to the summer church of the nuns’ convent (whose handsome winter church we saw on Sunday) the largest loftiest handsomest church in Kazan – Paved with iron about 20 in.[inches] square flags in 1802 –
Then called on the lady of our Colonel Paul Chef de Police who speaking only Russian and German our Persian (Kosambek) interpreted for us – Handsome house – Large lady great with child – Very civil and gave us a cup of hot coffee – About 10 minutes  there – These our Persian left and Mr. Tournerelli left us at the door of Dr. Eversmann upon whose lady we called –
Found the Dr. with her and another lady – Very civil – Glad we had called – He shewed us his collection of insects – Complete in Russian insects – The result of 20 years travel and labour – Saw 4 armoires – He has more – He has lately hit upon an admirable plan drawers 19 1/2 in.[inches] (front) by 19 in.[inches] and 3 in.[inches] deep – Lined with white and glazed top and bottom a little ridge all round about 1/2 in.[inch] from the bottom on which the ribs rest fixed by a pin and on these ribs (5 in each drawer?) all the insects are fixed with pins so that you see their back at the top of the top, and the under part on turning up the bottom of the drawer – Tickets on both sides top and bottom – Admirable plan for viewing the insect thoroughly – Each armoire 2 rows of each 18 drawers in height – He has written the Natural History of Orenburg published at Orenburg – One vol.[volume] now out – He got a refroidement on first coming here, and has suffered from it ever since – should always be careful – This sort of thing never quite recovered from here – It always remains in the constitution –

Then called on Madame Térénin for a minute or 2 and then home at at 1 40/’’ found very civil note from Madame de Lapteff – To hope she should see us tonight and offering to send her carriage for us at 8 – Wrote back civil acceptance of her carriage &c. &c. then dressed – And the Térénin’s carriage came at 3 1/4 and we were there in 2 or 3 minutes – Several gents[gentlemen] no ladies but herself and her 2 sisters and her belle mère – They none of them ask ladies to meet us at dinner – Among the gents[gentlemen] our Persian Mr. Kasembek and Colonel Bachmetief who is just returned from Ekaterinenburg, cousin of our Bachmetieff of Moscow – Large handsome house – The salon hung with Neapolitan views, and orné with little things (nicely chosen) from Italy – Excellent of Mr. Terenin by Cavallieri of Rome – Mr. T-[Terenin] draws nicely – One or 2 of his drawings in oil I think – Handsome good dinner – Coffee – Sat 1/2 hour after dinner –
Home at 5 1/2 – 1/2 asleep for near an hour – Madame Lapateff’s carriage came at 8 20/60 – Did not keep it waiting – She had a nice little soirée – We arrived almost first – Madame Moussine Pouchkine and her husband the Curator of the University, and Madame Ereméeff and her husband Maréschal de la Noblesse she 1/2 blood sister to Mrs. Lister Venables, and she the lady who had Captain Cochrane and his wife 2 months or more in her house – Baron Pirch and his daughter (demoiselle), from their terre near Bolgary, but the girl stupidish – At least gave no information – Madame E-[Ereméeff] talked to me the most and asked us for tomorrow evening –

I met my friend who is a medium last night. She has never seen Gentleman Jack or heard of Anne Lister.
Medium:
“All this practice is paying off.
I did a reading last night and picked up many details that were confirmed by pictures and written accounts. 😮 Such as:
-She wrote in journals with leather on them
-Described her bedroom, bed, bedding
-The time period was in the 1800’s
-Her nickname was Fred
-She wrote in her journal in her bedroom
-There were red/pink flowers in a swirl shape on the front lawn
-She had a manly appearance and loved women
-A blue suit was worn
-Her stomach problems were due to an allergy to food
-She was a writer
-She wore a brown sweater/shawl
-She sat by a fireplace, a table, an oil lamp
-She decorated with red velvet
-She had syphilis
-Her watch was kept in a wooden drawer of a desk
-She died by a tick bite
-Her wife wouldn’t let anyone change anything after her death, she wanted her things kept the same
It's heartwarming to help people find some comfort. Although sometimes it's very uncomfortable for me to see or feel certain things like in this case how sick she was before she passed away.”

Hi! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer and give us all your insights on Gentleman Jack. I've read several of your posts and wanted to ask: could you quote some of the times AW really wanted AL to take her drawers off?
hey :) thank you! I’m happy you enjoy reading me :)
About the Ann(e)s… well, I’ve read Anne’s journal from the 4th of January 1834 (when AL and AW see each other for the first time after the 10 months apart) till March 1834, when they finally get married and AL takes her drawers off for the first time with AW.
These are the only two times during that time period that AL writes about AW wanting to have her “near”:
Wednesday 12, February 1834 > “Affectionate to Miss W- and told her I should not be long without seeing her. She desired me not to write anything particular – she meant of affection – which I promised. I certainly feel fond of her now, and if I was once really near her (no drawers on) and she was pretty well satisfied I should be at ease. She has often said she wished to be near myself.” [SH:7/ML/E/16/0168]
First time with “no drawers on” - Thursday 27, February 1834 > “No drawers on last night – first time and first attempt to get really near her – did not succeed very well but she seemed tolerably satisfied.” [SH:7/ML/E/16/0174]
Saturday 1, March 1834 > “Three tolerable times of it last night. She wanted to have me quite near to her, and we shall manage it by and by.” [SH:7/ML/E/16/0175]
AL writes that AW “often said she wished to be near myself” but she doesn’t write about it every time it happens, she doesn’t record every time AW says that to her…so, I guess this is it :) have a nice day and thank you for your ask!

Welcome to the second edition of i rate anne lister according to hotness in all of her scenes! PART I: here
Episode 2: “I Just Went There To Study Anatomy”
Tumblr media
In The Process Of Making Wealthy Little Miss Walker Her Wife Anne: 10/10. This is a TRULY SUPERB Anne. This is peak dapperness. It’s one of her most polished looques -- the ear curls are gleaming, the eyebrow hair is tamed, the cravat is neat, the charm is on, she is so handsome that any woman would consider herself lucky to listen to her anecdotes about dissecting babies.
Tumblr media
The Same Anne But She Has Taken Off Her Coat: 11/10 because Anne removing one of her 8687 layers of clothing is always sexy; extra bonus for the homoerotic tension and the close-ups of eyes and lips in this scene.
Tumblr media
Dear Diary, All Miss Walker Needs To Do Now Is To Realise That What She Feels For Me Is Love Anne: 11/10. This is a fast-walking, self-satisfied, peacock-y Anne who moves so energetically that it is impossible to grab an unblurred screenshot of her. I am extra in love with this Anne because her boasting gets interrupted by a Bothersome Man and we see her morph from charming lesbian Anne into gruff business lesbian Anne. Hot.
Tumblr media
Pondering One Of Many Coal Negotiations Anne: Ohohohhh definitely 14/10. The sleeves. The striped waistcoat. The ever so slightly dishevelled cravat. The intense gaze, the hand at her lips, the mermaid throne, this Anne has everything and can have all my coal and whatever other resources she demands of me. Wink wonk.
Tumblr media
Doctor Anne Looking At Traumatised Farmboy: 8/10. This scene has a child in it and thus we aren’t meant to thirst for Anne quite as much, which I dislike. This Anne gets love from me for her very dark eyes and the fact that she talks about sword-fighting and discloses angsty insights into her psyche; though again, the dead brother and agony over being a lesbian who frequently gets mistaken for a man deflects a little bit from this Anne’s thirst-worthiness. Still a very beautiful and sweet Anne!
Tumblr media
A Chaumière Is Not A Shed Anne: 12/10 I LOVE THIS ANNE. One of the most iconic Annes we ever did see! She is sassy and in charge, she bosses her family around, she does whatever she likes to her estate, she is snobby, she fingers her wine glass, she is conceited and snooty and looks EXACTLY like the kind of lady who runs the oldest house in Halifax, which dates back to Henry the Fifth and Agincourt and is not, and never has been, a farm, Marian.
Tumblr media
Tempting Miss Walker To Go To Switzerland Anne: 11/10 A beautiful and hilarious Anne! An Anne who gets so jealous that she breaks a knife with her bare lesbian hands. An Anne who has her jealous lesbian wounds patched up by Miss Walker and her lily-white handkerchief, which is inherently sexy as fuck. Her cravat is silver, her collar is adequately ruffle-y, she is falling in love without quite realising it. A gorgeous, intense Anne. Would definitely go to Switzerland with her any day.
Tumblr media
Wondering If Miss Walker Has Ever Kissed Anyone Anne: 15/10 because this scene has lip-stroking. And staring at lips. And longing. And ridiculous talk about sexual practices. This Anne is so focused in her courting of little Miss Walker and tbh who wouldn’t have a gay awakening under these circumstances??
Tumblr media
Just Went To Paris To Study Anatomy Anne: 100000/10. I mean. I. I mean, I just, I mean, I, this, I just mean that this is. Yes. I. Hm.  Apart from the obvious ........... the muscular arm. The loose hair that falls across her very naked back. The fact that she still has her drawers on because she is an untouchable stone butch. The glint of sunlight. Everything about this Anne and this scene is perfection.
Tumblr media
Smirky Tophat Anne Who’s Having A Public Monologue On Her Own Greatness: 10/10 I LOVE to see a confident, happy Anne who wears a tophat and is fully aware of her own sexiness. Yes. Love love love. I want to wife this Anne.
Tumblr media
Eating Pieces Of Fruit In A Homosexual Manner Whilst Eyeing Up Mrs Priestley Anne: 12/10 I think we can all agree that the unnecessary way in which Anne spreads open slices of figs with her fingers and then buries her face in them for some delighted slurping is entirely hot and entirely stupid. And then she licks her thumb. And sucks on it. I appreciate this Anne but also kind of hate her.
Tumblr media
About To Smash Her Room Because Vere Invited Her To Her Wedding Anne: 9/10. This Anne gets a lower rating just because my heart hurts when I watch this scene. Kudos to this angry, vulnerable, emotional Anne for realising she’s now Too Old to smash up her entire room because a lady is giving her trouble, though.
Tumblr media
Confronting A Shitty Man At His Shitty Bank Anne: 10/10 This is a very Anne-y Anne. The hard stare, the tightly set jaw, the raised chin, the squared shoulders; this Anne embodies everything sexy about confronting shitty men in public and I just, oof. Also, look at her beautiful floral collar.
Tumblr media
Laughing At A Shitty Man Anne: 16/10 This Anne has just returned back inside from doing manual labour in the garden (a scene I currently have no access to, fuck you HBO), and thus her cravat is undone, wisps of hair are flying everywhere, there are speckles of dirt in her face, she’s woman-spreading in her chair, you can see a sliver of her chest, and she’s wearing the biggest, most-shit eating Grin Of Self-Satisfaction in the world, and I love her, she is clearly the superior person in the room and also in the world. I want to sit on this Anne’s lap. Right now.
Tumblr media
Saying Farewell To Ann Walker Whilst Admiring Her Watercolours Anne: 11/10 Ooohhh such a soft and lovely and sweet and romantic Anne. This is the first time she seeks emotional support from Ann, and you can see her melting ever so fondly as she falls further and further in love with her future wife. The gondola pin, the yearning, the closeness, the almost-kiss, it’s just too much. This Anne is so tender, but then she turns the room into a mosh pit as soon as A Possible Rival enters the scene. Shouldering Catherine out of the way? Sexy. Very.
Tumblr media
Laughing At Yet Another Man Anne: 12/10 Listen I don’t know how many alpha Annes in a row I can stand, but this one is just hot, snarky, sarcastic, and so very prim and proper in her chair. Also, the sleeves. Goddess bless this Anne.
Tumblr media
Wearing A Giant Hat That Makes Every Church-Goer Behind Her Erupt Into Spontaneous Hatred Anne: 20/10 This Anne is, despite her enormous monstrosity of a hat, just a wee tearful baby and I want to wrap her into the softest hug!! She is hot because this outfit is so positively ludicrous and only Suranne Jones could carry it off with so much confidence. But also, ouch, this scene hits me so hard because not only does Anne have to watch Vere get married to a man, she also ponders the fact that this sort of marriage will forever be denied to her, and it’s just ... not fair.
Tumblr media
We’re Not Alive Unless We Tell Our Ex Girlfriend That Her Husband Sucks, Are We? Anne: 11/10 This is a very beautiful Anne. There is just a tiny bit of spite towards Vere’s husband (hot), but she prioritises kindness over her own heartbreak, and also you can see her little facial hairs glimmering in the slanting sunlight and she is an absolute lesbian angel. Also, I feel like this hat in close-up shots is the nearest we will ever get to a historical snapback-wearing Anne.
Tumblr media
Off To Pester Miss Walker At The Lake District Anne: 50/10 THIS ANNE. This Anne is EVERYTHING! Look at her perfect stupid collar. Look at the puffy sleeves! Her watch is dangling around her neck! Her hair is adorable and braided very cutely! Her eyes are making love to the camera! Her smile waters my crops and also various other things of mine! She is happy to run after her wife, she focuses on the future instead of dwelling on the past, and she is absolutely breath-taking. Thank you Suranne Jones, you are a gift to lesbians everywhere in this universe.
Vote for your favourite Anne below!
