Plant of the Day
Thursday 25 August 2022
An aromatic plant originating in the dry scrub in Africa and Asia Ocimum basilicum (sweet basil) thrives in the heat. Seeds are raised in a glasshouse or on a warm windowsill, and the plants moved outside in summer. There are many cultivars with different leaf shapes, colours and flavours.

In my friend’s garden was this Salvia 'SoCool Purple', a new variety that has large pastel purple flowers. Ideal for a sunny, well-drained border it is considered a hardy cultivar but it may need protection from extreme frost during the winter. The flowers are popular with pollinators.

The soft pink flowers of Nepeta racemosa 'Amelia' (catmint) are over but the upright stems still create a feature in the border. This compact, clump-forming herbaceous perennial has aromatic silvery grey-green foliage. The plant is irresistible to cats!

The foliage of Calamintha nepeta (lesser calamint) has a fresh minty smell when crushed. This compact, bushy perennial produces a cloud of two-lipped white or pale lilac flowers all summer and into early autumn in a sunny location. Great for the edge of a border on a dry garden.

The upright perennial Dictamnus albus (burning bush, candle plant, dittany, fire plant, fraxinella, gas plant, spitfire plant) is flowering. The divided leaves are highly aromatic, some people describe them as smelling of lemons. This slow growing plant is covered with oils which can cause skin irritation in sunlight.

Despite some reduction pruning a year ago this Drimys winteri var. chilensis has produced flower on the regrowth. This is a large, upright evergreen shrub or tree that has leathery, aromatic green leaves which are silvery underneath. The creamy white, fragrant flowers appear from spring to summer. The plant needs a sheltered location.

Even though the purple flower spikes of Agastache rugosa (Korean mint, wrinkled giant hyssop) are over the seedheads still produce the aromatic aniseed scent when crushed. This short-lived, herbaceous perennial is grown for the edible leaves and is very popular with bees.

Perfect for this container is Rosmarinus officinalis 'Foxtail' (rosemary) which is on the edge of a terrace and helps transition to a dry garden. This aromatic, evergreen shrub creates branches that arch to become semi-prostrate. The small, pale blue flowers are produced from spring to late autumn.

In the Woodland Garden of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK, the Calycanthus occidentalis (Californian allspice, wood rose) is putting on a show of deep red, scented flowers that then turn brown and resemble wood. This deciduous shrub was introduced to Britain by the Scottish plant hunter David Douglas in 1831. A distinctive feature of this plant is that the leaves and stem emit a spicy aroma when bruised.
