HEUCHERA
This week's Rhombus House Garden post is a simple PSA to let you know that I fucking love Heuchera (aka Coralbells).
They're shade tolerant, perennial and hardy in zone 4, divisible every 2-3 years so that then you have twice as many heucheras. They're native from Ontario to Georgia and Nebraska to Louisiana.
They are the "oops all berries!" of garden plants with leaves as bright and colorful as the flowers of other plants.
Check this out.
Simulate an autumnal forest floor from spring through frost.

Anyways, please appreciate Heucheras. This barely scratches the surface of their beauty and variety!

Plant of the Day
Thursday 20 October 2022
In my friend’s garden Heuchera villosa 'Palace Purple' (alum root) is still producing small pale pink flowers above the smart mounds of metallic bronze-purple leaves. This is a great ground-cover plant especially for the front of a border.

First batch of Heuchera are ready in the greenhouse.
Heuchera like dappled or semi shade.
These have been greenhouse grown, thus will need protection until the risk of frost is over.
We’re here to help with garden and planting advise, why not pop in and ask.

The lime green and hot pink themed section is the only bit of the garden that's working out more or less as planned.

We did some planting & transplanting this week:

Including some store-bought ginger that we're propagating. If all goes according to plan, we should have 5 to 6 ginger plants:

My queen is drying dandelion leaves. You're supposed to be able to make a concoction with them that is beneficial in the garden. We'll see. If the results are noticeably beneficial, I'll post a follow up later in the year:

I can't believe the size of the leaves of this cilantro. You can't buy this in the grocery store:

We went to a local hardware store to see about getting some repairs done to our mini tiller. Turns out the repair department is closed on Sundays so this happened instead:

For Saint Patrick's Day, it was a nice warm Spring day but the temperature starting dropping as we're expecting an overnight low in the mid-30s Fahrenheit. Perfect fire pit weather:

Coral bells (Heuchera spp.) are a beautiful and versatile flowering plant that thrives in partial shade to full sun and well-draining soil. They are drought tolerant and should dry out slightly between waterings. With their delicate foliage and vibrant blooms, coral bells are a popular choice for gardeners looking to add color and texture to their landscapes. Popular varieties can range in color from purple to red to pink to the green seen above. Coral bells are not considered invasive and are native to North America, including the Rocky Mountains and the eastern United States.
