The God of Second Chances: The Day of Atonement
The God of Second Chances: The Day of Atonement
On that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the Lord. Lev. 16:30 So Christ also having been once offered to bear the sins of many shall appear a second time, apart from sin, to them that wait for him unto salvation. Heb. 9:28 I love the Jewish feasts, Jesus celebrated the feasts, and each one is a beautiful illustration of…

a love note to my siddur
dear siddur,
i return every day to my you, multiple times a day, and i am going to love you until you fall apart. in the morning we spend birkot hashakhar together, in the day hashem teaches me to study and memorize the amidah, and once in the evening we re-engage for hamapil and the shema, to thank hashem for a day well-done.
i am going to read and internalize your words with the heart of a jew until your pages and cover are indecipherable and then i will thank hashem and thank you for our work getting me through my conversion process and how much i have learned with you. i hope you last me forever and maybe my attachment to a book is weird but we love our books here in judaism

Note
yeshivish jewish culture is using awkward Artscroll english to translate hebrew concepts into English when talking to non-jews.
Then realizing that statements like "we wear phylacteries when we pray" sounds more unhinged than simply saying "these are called tefillin"
.

Chag sameach, Avital! I'm in the market for a new siddur, and I was hoping you might have some thoughts (or be able to broadcast this to those who do!). I'm Reform and can read Hebrew decently and I've used Conservative siddurim before. I've heard good things about the Mishkan T'filah, but I wanted to see if you or anyone else has any suggestions :)
Yeah! So the boring (but real) answer is that it's usually best to just use the siddur that your community uses. Now, if you're Reform and your community doesn't do weekday minyanim but you want to do weekday davening, that's a different story.
If your Hebrew is good enough that you don't need transliterations at all (or are committed to weaning yourself off of them) and you're willing to write in or verbally add in the egalitarian stuff on your own (or aren't bothered), I really like the Koren siddurim I have. I have a Nusach Sfard standard siddur with English translations and a Nusach Ashkenaz talpiot (mini travel siddur) with just the Hebrew. I love both.
I do not own, but I have used, multiple excellent ArtScroll siddurim, and I own an ArtScroll Tikkun (basically a giant chumash written in STAM script for the purposes of learning various parts of Torah leyning) that I really like. Some ArtScroll siddurim have in-line translation and transliteration under the Hebrew, if that interests you also. I will say that you will have to have some tolerance for Ashkenzish transliteration; it's very frum Ashkenazi that way.
Both Koren and ArtScroll are, however, definitely orthodox/non-egal. If you're looking for Masorti/Conservative/traditional egalitarian siddurim, I do really love my Lev Shalem (official Conservative movement siddur) for Shabbat and Festivals, and I am fine with using Sim Shalom for weekdays. (I don't dislike it personally, but I also hope they update it to match Lev Shalem soon.)
If you're interested in something both Sephardic and avant-garde, I definitely recommend checking out Or veShalom:
If you do, tell me about it! My primary community is Ashkenazi so that's been my default, but this honestly looks amazing and I've been meaning to invest in it for a while. (I am a little hesitant in that I'm worried that if I start davening out of this, I won't want to daven out of anything else, but that's a risk I'm willing to take when I have the money to buy it, lol.)
Hope that helps, and a belated chag sameach!!

hey! conversion student who's getting into the portion where I'm studying prayer. Do you have any recommendations for books containing brachot that have them written in hebrew script, hebrew transcription in english, and english translation? Most I'm finding only have two of the three. ty!
Hmmmm, you're right, it is hard to find all three, but here are two I found:
Artscroll Transliteratated Linear (Orthodox)
Mishkan T'Fillah Transliterated (Reform)
You should be able to find Brachot in there :)

So I haven't received it yet cuz shipping, but I ordered this one from Congregation Sha'ar Zahav because it was highly recommended!
https://shaarzahav.org/our-siddur/
I also discovered that Artscroll is currently giving away siddurim, including non-Ashki ones!
https://hashemlovesyou.net/
I also have and love Mishkan T'filah, and am currently waiting for my travel version to be delivered 😊
Thanks! I'll have to pass on the Sha'ar Zahav for now, it's awfully expensive and I just did a payment plan on my credit card for the Lev Shalem and the Mahzor Lev Shalem together. But I'd be interested to check that one out someday!
But I will take advantage of a free Siddur, if it's not inappropriate, I asked for a Nusach Edot haMizrach, because I would also like to have a Sfaradi perspective even if I'm 90% sure my congregation is Ashkenazi?

It has been almost 10 years into me being Jewish and I still can barely read Hebrew. I am not the only one. Transliteration is so important, but despite it being easier than ever, nobody is incorporating it into their e-daven apps.
I understand it takes up space in a physical book, but Sefaria blocking all plugins? Koren putting out siddurim apps, making you pay for translation but not even allowing transliteration as an option? Do better.
I tried for years and I still cannot master the Hebrew script. I appreciate that many converts can learn with time, but I'm stuck. I have most services memorized by ear, but for tehillim etc. I don't know by heart. It's unfortunate and accessibility is so easy now! Artscroll kinda tries but it uses ashki pronunciation that most communities don't use.
Eit ratzon should make a tehillim.

YISRO, THE KOHEN OF MIDYAN, THE FATHER-IN-LAW OF MOSHE, HEARD.
Growing up, our children are protected by the protection of our culture. Our mother
our father
and the riches our culture fosters - for the protection of its young.
In this way we respect the life we have been given to us by G-d, even if we are non-other than animals
yet this is the life we have been gifted by G-d as we fear the darkness - rightly.
[When I grew up I say well the demons that had infested my family due to war, and internal flaws
My grandmother always made us go to church
for good reason
people, even Yisro
must wait on the passing of the demons
before venturing forth
to welcome the victory of Moses.]
ref; OrChiam Artscroll english/hebrew Shemos pg 544 Accordingly, even if [Yisro] were to hear that [Hashem] took the Jews out of Egypt, in his heart he would not give credence to their departure
[It is wisdom that the cultures of the world used to be taught its children until this ‘modern’ age. So children used to know of the darkness and to fear G-d, even if indirectly. I know the wisdom of the cultures as filtered for its goodness, which may only be the development of holiness, the transparent husk of trans-illumination that pervades the natural world
The ever supported gift of Life
by the Hand of G-d]

advice for shacharit?
hello jumblr it’s me again with annoying questions.
FOR: reform conversion, but i pray from an artscroll sefard pocket siddur and want to improve my Hebrew Skills.
anyways does anyone have any advice for getting through shacharit when your hebrew sight reading level is that of a child snail? i’m at a point where i can quickly say the shema and most of v’ahavta, and then rely on memorizing transliteration for ashrei, shemonei esrei, and aleinu, but the pesukei d’zimra are completely new and overwhelming. g-d help me
