Costume Updates: 2023 West End Cast Change
A few notes before I start: - Kayleigh McKnight (Seymour) is currently injured. Gabriella Stylianou (alt A/S) is temporarily performing in her place, including in the preview footage. - As a general rule of thumb, Six has slowly been standardizing the costumes for both US and UK. Most of that has been changes to the UK system/style to make them more in line with the US changes initially made for Broadway (a few changes have made their way to the US from the UK though). There's been a steady rollout of updates over the period post-lockdowns, but with this cast change most of the major holdouts have been changed at once. I'll get to that in a moment. - Obviously it's very early in the run and we haven't seen all the costumes yet, particularly for alts. I'll continue to update as we do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Costumes (credits below) - Nikki Bentley's Aragon costume has had a few construction changes to be more in line with the US costumes. No major design differences, though. Not sure on maker yet. - Thảo Therése Nguyễn has the darker green which has been standardized for the last few UK casts. Not sure on maker yet. - Gabriella was previously with Norwegian Cruise Lines as part of Bliss 2.0, but as expected she did get a new costume. Her corset is in the US style/design rather than the UK style (info here, here). I'm not sure who made it and very much wondering if the corset only could be a US-make, but don't have enough information yet to know if that could be the case. I'm also waiting to see what Kayleigh's looks like. - Reca Oakley (Cleves) is another former NCL queen, but as expected she also did get a new costume. It was made by Paul Aspinall. - Inez Budd's Howard skirt has been changed to the US-style construction. This has smaller panels (rather than the old NCL/UK style; post here). However, unlike the US skirts, the vertical stud lines still go all the way to the bottom hem. Per usual, it was made by Ella Dancewear. - Janiq Charles is a standard Parr style, made by Ashleigh Cherry Costumes per usual. - Otherwise, the costumes seem to be in line with all recent UK standardization. - The alts' costumes should match the changes made for these principals.
Wigs/HMU - Nikki Bentley has an auburn tone with a side part and doesn't seem to have bleached/ombre highlights. Curled bob, a little longer than some we've seen in the past. It's a full wig. - Thảo has dark roots with a silvery-toned bleached wig. It's a long wig rather than some of the recent bobs. It's a full wig. - Gabriella has a side part and darker, honey blonde tone. It's pretty mid-range for Seymour wigs but is shorter than some of the recent UK. It's a full wig. - Janiq Charles has the curls pulled over to the side. It's a full wig. - Otherwise, the principal wigs are pretty standard. - No pictures of Naomi Alade in costume yet, but I am expecting her to have braids for all or most of her roles. - We've also seen quite a bit of the makeup so far, which I'll make a post about in the coming days.
Boots @lightleckrereins already made posts about a lot of this (here, here) but for easy access: - The cast seems to be standardized to a shorter heel than prior casts, like the shorter heel Chlöe Hart and Natalie Pilkington both got later in the 22-23 UK Tour run. - They've introduced the double height boots that the US productions have had for a few years now (explanation of the difference here). However, they're still sticking to the regular UK-style boot body with crystals rather than switching to the US-style lattice and studs. Right now it looks like Nikki Bentley (Aragon) and Janiq Charles (Parr) have the double height, while Reca Oakley (Cleves) has the regular Cleves thigh highs and everyone else seems to have regular single height. Of course, that post includes Gabriella Stylianou rather than Kayleigh McKnight so no good look at Kayleigh or other alts yet. - All the boots seem to have interchangeable straps. We first saw these with the US and then UK alts - it allows them to have one pair of boots with a monochrome silver heel and then just trade out their straps depending on which costume they're wearing. This is the first time we've seen that for principals; Sofia talked more about why this change might be happening in the post I linked at the start of this section.
Alt costumes - We've seen a silver alt costume in progress that should be for Meg Dixon-Brasil. (Made by Paul Aspinall per usual) - We've also seen part of a pink alt costume. It could feasibly be either Natalie Pilkington's or it could be one for Hannah Lowther. Judging from Hannah's makeup, she does seem to have their standard makeup pieces for pink alt. - Naomi Alade has orange palette and glitter, so she presumably has the orange alt costume. - We still don't know what costume Natalie Pilkington will have. She has her old principal Seymour/Parr and pink alt system from the 2022-23 UK Tour, and during the 2021-22 UK Tour she had a black alt costume that was a mishmash of old and new pieces. I'm expecting that she'll wear a black alt costume (either entirely or mostly new), but it's possible that she reuses her old pink alt instead (it has been a while since she's worn black alt and most of it was already old). I talked in more depth about some of those possibilities here.
-------------------------- First row for each queen: junka_0.0 Second row for each queen: elliexboleyn (Nikki and Reca), cassie.zhao_ (Thảo), mattstacel (Gabriella, Janiq), Georgia.ccooper (Inez), Boots: crystalledbyjane

[ aisha dee | cis female | she/her | twenty-six ] —— it’s just another typical week in hawkins i guess — isn’t that right, tammy thompson? huh, guess they can’t hear me over girls just want to have fun by cyndi lauper playing on their walkman, but it looks like they’re headed to work as a nurse at hawkins general hospital. did you know tammy has been in hawkins for most of her life? yeah, they’ve been described as a bit air-headed, but i suppose them also being nurturing outweighs the negative. i’ve also heard people say they remind them of cherry popsicles on a warm day, rhinestoned jean jackets, and off-tune karaoke… however, that could just be this weeks newest rumor.
ii. STATS
full name: tammy anne thompson
age: twenty six
birthday: august 3,1961
zodiac: leo
pronouns: she/her
sexuality: straight-ish
hometown: hawkins, indiana
occupation: nurse, “professional” singer
height: 5’6
weight: 120lbs
eye color: brown
hair color: brown
meyers-briggs: esfj
enneagram: 7
moral alignment: chaotic good
character inspiration: maybelle fox (a league of their own), dionne (clueless), ashleigh howard (greek)
iii. BIO
Trigger warnings: needles, teen pregnancy, natural disaster, death
tammy grew up knowing she was destined to become a star. she was the youngest daughter of two all-american, loving parents who encouraged her various theatrical pursuits: dance, theater, choir…if it got her on a stage she was the first in line to try it.
there was no one tammy idolized more than her older sister, caroline. caroline was seven years older than tammy and everything tammy wanted to grow up to be. she was pretty, popular, and she could sing better than anyone in hawkins. tammy became determined at a young age to become just like her.
but when tammy was ten and caroline was seventeen, caroline got pregnant from her long-time boyfriend. she decided to keep the baby, which meant giving up on her dreams to go to nashville to become a famous country singer. tammy was devastated for her sister, and vowed that she would live out her sister’s dream for her by becoming the best singer she could and making it big after high school.
high school was mostly smooth sailing for tammy. like her sister, she was fairly popular and well-liked. she never had a boyfriend because she was too scared of accidentally following in caroline’s footsteps. when she wasn’t practicing for choir or the school musical, she would spend her time helping her older sister watch her niece, clara, who she adored despite the fact the baby girl would cry whenever she tried to sing to her.
when tammy was a junior, her father came down with lung cancer thanks to a long-time smoking habit. tammy spent most of her junior year in the hawkins general hospital where she became interested in the medical field. her father unfortunately passed away the summer before her senior year.
after school, tammy left hawkins for nashville where she managed to find an agent who would take her and booked small singing gigs here and there. but becoming famous took more time than tammy realized, she ended up balancing her emerging singing career with nursing school.
tammy enjoyed nursing, as she always had a knack for caring for others, and she enjoyed that she had plenty of people to talk to her passions about as she poked and prodded them with needles.
tammy felt as though she was on the cusp of her big break when the hawkins earthquake hit. nothing could have prepared tammy for the call she got from her mother telling her of her sister’s death, leaving her niece  an orphan. tammy packed up her bags and headed home to help her mother take care of clara. since then, she has stayed in hawkins and worked as a nurse, telling anyone who will listen just how close she was to making it big in nashville.
iv. PERSONALITY
tammy is a theater kid through and through. she loves put on a show and dazzle her audiences, willing or unwilling, and thrives off of drama. her goal is to leave a smile on the face of every person she meets, whether that be through a beautiful ballad or offering a lollipop at the end of a doctor’s visit.
she is a nurturer by nature and genuinely loves taking care of others, to the point where she can be a bit smothering to her friends. she also has a bad habit of thinking she knows what is best for everyone, and will not hesitate to tell someone if she thinks they could be making better choices.
she is a beauty, but she doesn’t necessarily have the same level of brains. She isn’t dumb by any means, but she tends to get so wrapped up in her own version of the world that she misses out on important details.
v. HEADCANONS
tammy has no clue that she isn’t a fantastic singer. she truly believes she is one of the greatest talents on the planet and that she just hasn’t had a chance to catch her big break yet.
because of what happened to her sister, she is extremely virtuous and is saving herself for marriage. she also can be a bit judgmental of girls who don’t share her morals when it comes to dating.
she is fully unaware that there could be anything supernatural happening in hawkins and will probably be unaware until a demigorgon eats her tbh
she loves knitting but her knitting skills are about on par with her singing abilities, which means her friends get a lot of weirdly shaped hats and crooked scarves as gifts

Costume Breakdown: Hampton Court Palace
Hey y'all! The long awaited HCP/pro-shot breakdown is finally here.
There are some key differences in the makers + construction of some of these Hampton Court costumes, so throughout this post I'll be talking a lot about the different costume makers + studios that make both the Hampton Court costumes and the longer term productions. I have a write-up here on what the different costume makers are and and what productions/costumes they’ve worked on.
A couple broadly applicable notes: - Everyone got a new costume. - With the exception of Lexi, everyone seems to have gotten new boots. - Everyone got the Roman numeral earrings. - Most of the crowns are new (made by Dean Burke Hats per the usual) - With the exception of Lexi and potentially Natalie May Paris, everyone got a new wig.

Jarneia Richard Noel (@/jrichardnoel, @/lewis.haythorpe, @/jrichardnoel, @/karontwinkleeyes_sw) Jaye'J had a costume with the most recent costume update; she got it in Feb 2020 and wore it through her departure from the show in 2021 (pictured top left). She is not wearing that costume but instead a new one. That’s not surprising; over time costumes break down and the fit and structure won’t work as well for the actor, and for the pro-shot they would want new costumes.
The fit of her costume, especially the shape of the peplum and its’ alignment with the skirt, is fairly different. It looks like this costume was made with the peplum attached to the top, whereas her 2020-21 had the peplum attached to the skirt.
Jaye’J got the updated necklace design with the black ribbon laced through the chains. She had previously only had flat La Ducas but got new heeled ones for Hampton Court, which I talk about more here.

Millie O'Connell (L-R: @/karontwinkleeyes_sw, @/isaacgrinnellphoto, @/hollylouisehmua, @/lewis.haythorpe) Millie's costume is made by Costumes by Wendy. They had made almost all of the early UK principal costumes but haven't worked on recent productions. I've gotten a few comments about how Millie's HCP costume looks more like Millie's old costumes (which were made by Costumes by Wendy) than some of the new UK Boleyns (which are made by Ashleigh Cherry Costumes and/or Plunge Creations), and that's why! There's also one notable difference: Millie's HCP uses the monochromatic dark green vinyl with a clear vinyl layer on top. Up until now, that had only been used on some of the John Kristiansen costumes.
Her makeup in the bottom left photo was done by Holly Louise Davies.

Natalie May Paris (@/nataliemayparis, @/nataliemayparis, @/karontwinkleeyes_sw, @/ellisleighladd) Like Jaye’J, Natalie also got a new costume. It’s presumably made by the usual UK maker, although I have yet to be able to identify who that is. The bodice is fit very differently than her 2021-21 West End bodice, but there aren’t any design changes.
Tumblr media
Lexi McIntosh (@/msleximcintosh, @/lewis.haythorpe, @/kiiii_x, @/nataliemayparis) Lexi also got a new costume made by Paul Aspinall Costumes and Amanda Barrow, who are the usual UK Cleves makers. The biggest change between her Hampton Court and West End costumes is that the HCP has the updated mesh used on the 2021 West End and 2022 UK Tour cast change costumes. She is seemingly wearing her old thigh high boots.
Tumblr media
Aimie Atkinson (Pamela Raith/@/peachyraith, @/kiiii_x, @/aimieatkinson, @/karontwinkleeyes_sw) Aimie received the updated costume design. It was made by Rainbow Mascots. To my knowledge this is the first time they’ve made any Howard costumes, as most recently they’ve been made by Ella McGowan/Dancewear by Ella.
Aimie’s costume has the single studded cross on the neckline, which is a first for the UK. Up until now UK has used double with US-based John Kristiansen makes using single. The skirt construction and mesh line up with the typical UK makes. Otherwise, nothing of note.
Tumblr media
Maiya Quansah-Breed (@/kiiii_x, @/lewis.haythorpe, @/aimieatkinson, @/lewis.haythorpe) Maiya’s costume was made by Jennifer Adgey. The lacing on the side of the pants matches up more with the John Kristiansen style than the typical UK. Otherwise it’s very standard for the recent UK Parr costumes.
Tumblr media
The boots are, as always, custom La Ducas with some beautiful embellishment by Crystalled by Jane. They didn’t receive any major updates in the crystal patterns, following the most recent designs used for the 2021-22 West End and 2022-23 UK Tour casts. However, while the strap widths and number are usually differed, these boots all use the single double width strap.
