Hera asteroid mission completes acoustic testing

ESA's Hera asteroid mission has completed acoustic testing, confirming the spacecraft can withstand the sound of its own lift-off into orbit. Testing took place within the Agency's Large European Acoustic Facility at the ESTEC Test Center in the Netherlands. This is Europe's largest and most powerful sound system, fitted with a quartet of noise horns that can generate more than 154 decibels of extreme noise.

Diego Escorial Olmos, Hera system engineer comments, "Launch will be the single most stressful day of Hera's life, so we have worked hard to simulate it during our mechanical test phase, first by vibrating the spacecraft on the ESTEC Test Center's shaker tables, and now by blasting it with a noise profile sourced from our launch provider, to be as true to life as possible."

The LEAF chamber stands 11 m wide by 9 m deep and 16.4 m high. One of its walls is embedded with a set of enormous sound horns. Nitrogen shot through the horns can produce a range of noise up to more than 154 decibels, like standing close to multiple jets taking off at once.

As a safety feature, LEAF can operate only once its doors are closed. Steel-reinforced concrete walls safely contain its noise, which are also coated with epoxy resin to reflect noise to produce a uniform sound field within the chamber. The chamber itself is supported on rubber bearing pads to isolate it from its surroundings, preventing damage to the rest of the Test Center—or nearby human observers.

Hera was switched on for the test sessions, and placed in launch configuration, with its solar wings folded around its body and its fuel tanks filled with helium, nitrogen and water. Ahead of testing it had been fitted with more than 130 accelerometers to chart the forces exerted on it then ringed by microphones to record the surrounding noise levels, to ensure the tests attain their planned volume.

ESA structures engineer Simon Whent, supporting the design of the Hera spacecraft structure and many of its payloads, comments, "Even though this acoustic testing has been exhaustively modeled ahead of time, it was still a nerve-wracking moment as the giant doors of the LEAF chamber close and then the horns are activated. Each test session lasts for just a minute—but that still seemed like a very long time as we waited to find out if Hera's structure and components withstand the sound waves blasting it."

ESA mechanical systems and structures engineer Cliff Ashcroft, who led the design of Hera's central tube 'backbone," adds, "In reality, the highest, most damaging levels of acoustic pressure are felt during the early launch phase, generated at or close to lift-off, when the vibrations reflected from the pad and local facility bombard the departing launcher. It is a kind of final acoustic 'pat on the back' as the launcher and spacecraft depart from Earth."

Hera is Europe's contribution to an international planetary defense experiment. Following the DART mission's impact with the Dimorphos asteroid last year—modifying its orbit and sending a plume of debris thousands of kilometers out into space—Hera will return to Dimorphos to perform a close-up survey of the crater left by DART. The mission will also measure Dimorphos' mass and make-up, along with that of the larger Didymos asteroid that Dimorphos orbits around.

Hera is scheduled for launch in October 2024, to rendezvous with the Didymos and Dimorphos asteroid system about two years later.

"The successful completion of Hera's mechanical test phase sets us well on track to meet that deadline, thanks to the collective dedication of ESA's Hera team, prime contractor OHB and European Test Services, managing the Test Center for ESA," comments Paolo Martino, leading the mission engineering team.

"The remainder of this year will see the spacecraft undergoing various functional tests and preparation for its next important testing milestone—sustained operation in space-grade vacuum and temperature extremes within a thermal vacuum chamber, scheduled for early next year, followed by testing of the inter-satellite links that will keep Hera connected to the pair of CubeSats it will deploy in the vicinity of Dimorphos."

Jumping Through Gates and Portals.

If you have read along so far, the concept of travelling everywhere in a Spelljammer Ship has failed to make the cut. Why? Without good ship combat rules that allow all the players to be involved (in a fun way), there is no real incentive to play out such travel. Sounds great in novel form, but is harder to make interactive for the players. Besides, gates/portals/doors offer a much more efficient and enjoyable experience. Random gates. Portal keys. Unexpected doors. All these mechanisms are immediate and rewarding for the players, and keep the narrative tight as you jump from one plane/location to another. Why insert weeks of travel, when you can just have the party discover a gate or portal?

Moreover, the advanced (and ancient) civilization that the party has been discovering more about conveniently used these to move about, and to discover more about that culture, the party needs to travel on these same paths.

I painted the party into a corner at the end of the last session. The only way to quickly discover more about this civilization and visit another of their locations is to blindly activate the Orb of Recall, which when broken created a teleportation circle for the party to use, without knowing the destination.

Knowing they would be going far from the ship, The Ardent Searcher, and knowing they needed to resupply, I had the Captain suggest two things. One, they should take a magical beacon with them, so if they were still in the Astral or Prime Material planes, she could find them. Two, before they activated the Orb, they should travel to a space port to resupply.

The one the Captain suggests contains the legendary shop, Grunkle's. This shop has most potions in stock, plus a random assortment of other equipment and supplies they have accepted in trade, which is basically a random magic shop. This was great fun. Allowing the players to roll percental dice to determine if any specific magic item was currently in stock. Notably, the odds got very thin, very quickly as the rarity went from uncommon to legendary. Still, they got a few wanted items and several healing (and other) potions.

Restocked and rested, they activated the Orb and teleported to a very distant asteroid base in orbit around a planet. I decided that this small base would be guarded by construct soldiers, or more properly Oorgolian Soldiers from Arcane of the Ancients by Monte Cooke Games. These gave the party fits with their backpack launchers and exploding into a fireball when killed. Again, I left them one option to proceed. At this base, there was one drop ship in the dock. They got in and plummeted to the planet below.

This was all fun and games, until their drop ship hit the ocean and went deep. With no way to steer, they had to just wait for the landing. When it hit the ocean floor, it popped open and allowed the ocean water in! This caused tension and scouring of character sheets for solutions. Items were used, but the party was not threatened by drowning. I used the breathable water setting in 'Branu's Kiss' of 'Numenera: Into the Night' by Monte Cooke Games.

While struggling to find breathing solutions they ultimately did not need, they were attacked by some Progenitors (Again from Arcana of the Ancients). This was a nasty welcome to an otherwise amazing place. After a short rest, they proceeded toward a loud humming sound. Branu's Kiss has a facility that creates tons of aquatic life, but I changed everything else to make it fit my storyline. They found the entrance, but a large group of Merrow (Monster Manual) were there. The party attacked and fortunately gained access to the facility before reinforcements could arrive.

Once inside, the party's sorcerer was contacted by a voice from his past. A voice that had aided him before(in his backstory). He doesn't know who the voice is, but the voice advises him of a portal in the lower level of this facility that the party already has a portal key for (very early in the campaign they gained a polyhedron palm-sized object). The voice advises the sorcerer of a few things. One, the gate will lead them to the world of The Enemy. Two, he must enter the fortress there and recover The Armageddon Sphere. Three, The Voice cannot aid the party in that land, so he is sending help now (in the form of sidekicks). A gate opens in the entryway of the facility, and out step sidekicks for for 4 of the PCs. And finally, The Voice grants the sorcerer a Word of Recall that will bring him back to this very room, which is safe from enemies.

The party takes a long rest and levels up.

AI ‘improvements’

So, the standard interceptor AI now tries to vaguely formation fly with the “wing” it spawns with.  That is working, although I’ve noticed formations seem to also coordinate to a degree...  Which um, I don’t know how, but OK.  They’re also supposed to kind of attempt to fly at the player during this, which does result in the formation slowly turning, sometimes an individual member will break particularly strongly to hassle you.  Then there’s the wing leader that is a bit more active with it.

This results in enemies getting more individually difficult when there are fewer of them, which is indeed something that seems right, but it also needs tweaking.

Also in AI news, drones actually kind of target enemies (and asteroids) which is nice!  Now they’ll fly a bit off screen for it, which I’m unsure if I’m fond of, but eh, they function now.

And then on a whim, I added Flurry Missile Launchers (at least, to an extent, there’s two of them).  While technically their own weapon type from the standard missile launcher, there is a lot of synergy between the two missile launcher types built in, and if you have both kinds, their decks will tend to give each other bonuses, giving features of one to the other.
