New fic alert!
Author reveals of the AU Exchange are done, so here we go!
Tumblr media
Relationship: Jack Aubrey & Stephen Maturin, Jack Aubrey & HMS Surprise
Rating and Genre: Temeraire AU, Sickfic, Angst with a Happy Ending, T
Wordcount: 2k
Dragons all over England had been afflicted by a terrible plague, including Jack's old, trusty companion, the anglewing Admirationis. Today Stephen brings hopeful news back to the covert.
“Thank the Lord,” Jack exclaimed. He laughed, somewhere between joyfulness and hysteria. "Surprise, my dear Surprise," he pressed his forehead to the dragon, who was blinking lethargically back at him, but shifted a bit closer in response. "Stephen will save you… by God, you have done it, my friend!"

Oh also since I guess I finally posted some language content on main I can having a little ranting about the Creative Endeavour as a treat, so this goes to say that I am once again changing my tack on this whole thing and starting from scratch (I promise that I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t think it would significantly improve my experience writing the thing and my satisfaction with the final product!! I promise!!!) TL;DR is that the original version stuck very close to the plot of the first book, and that was a helpful boost when I was just starting to write it, but now that I’ve gotten a better grasp on the characters and the story I’m starting to feel somewhat constrained by it. Also, I’ve realized what the issues were for pacing, so I’m picking a format that will better allow those to be fixed. Anyways, I’m feeling slightly unhinged still so all this goes to say that I will probably be attempting to do Nanowrimo with it, and shooting for 35000-40000 words (which is significantly more than I’ve ever achieved in Nanowrimo so that’ll be fun), stay tuned to watch me fall flat on my face!

a story nobody asked for wherein Darwin does drugs with the ship's surgeon
We (by which I mean, the historical record) know very little about Benjamin Bynoe (ship's surgeon aboard HMS Beagle) other than that he was from Barbados, and I'm really enjoying filling in the gaps. My Bynoe is a little Bones McCoy, a little Stephen Maturin, and a little Oluwande, and I've decided I would kill and die for him.

I’m not going to write Aubreyad fanfiction until I grok the 19th century because I think the historical context is doing MUCH more for the stories than set-dressing but in the meantime? In the meantime, I know exactly how absurd the conversation would be between them if Jack and Stephen decided to have gay sex

what pronouns you use for me sounds like a you problem not a me problem
i write fanfiction sometimes
and fuck around with video editing at other times
among the most common rambling topics on here are various tatorts (stuttgart, münchen, zürich, weimar, bremen, new berlin, old berlin, saarbrücken, etc.), polizeiruf (świecko), black sails, supernatural, patrick o'brian's aubreyad, things that are made by hand, and law/the college experience. and then sometimes i just say words in orders
posts with undescribed images should be tagged #no id. sometimes i fuck this up. sorry!
that's it. have a good day 🌼🌷🌾

Not me, listening to Simon Vance read Temeraire, having also listened to him read 14-15 books of the Aubreyad, and recognizing his one-to-one correlation of the voices. I know Laurence is literally fanfiction of Jack Aubrey, but hearing Maturin's voice say, "Never in life!" just like that, but as a house-sized mythical beast, is... something.
(I know, I know, this was exactly on purpose, but it's still a complete riot.)

Where’s that post where someone says “Master And Commander(Aubreyad) X Temeraire crossover when?”
With replies about how Temeraire is, no joke, Master and Commander fanfiction
the author stopped posting Master and Commander fic on AO3 a year before the first Temeraire book came out

For @pudentilla whose reply to a comment on her wonderful, heartbreaking fic On Parting (on AO3 here- go read it, it’s amazing, you will weep!) made me chuckle and immediately think of Jack and Stephen and the officers of HMS Surprise singing Don’t Forget Your Old Shipmate in Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World. Yes, the shanty’s very gay. That’s the point. This is also an excuse for me to share this scene which I love dearly.

Beat Love Down Aubrey-Maturin series Rating: adult (sex-pollen style explicit sex, and consequentially some (relatively light) consent issues. Also period-typical homophobia. Please let me know if you'd like details.) Characters: Jack Aubrey/William Marshall, Stephen Maturin, James Dillon Wordcount: 3700ish Summary: In the heat of the battle Jack Aubrey did not feel the sting of what Stephen later told him would have been a very small stiletto.   A subtle French poison is making Jack feel things that are not appropriate for polite society, nor even for the often impolite society of his ship. This is either the best or the worst day of William Marshall's life. A/N: I'm trying to clear a bunch of WIPs off my desktop and I found this, which I wrote by voice memo while driving cross-country almost exactly two years ago. I haven't read any O'Brian in also about two years, so let me apologize now for any errors in detail, dialogue, or tone. Otherwise I apologize for nothing, I read the first book and wanted a lake of Aubrey/Marshall to wallow in and AO3 totally let me down. Maybe there's a zine out there??

quote a passage you really like from someone else's fic
Hey I hate decisions so I decided to rec like, three different random things instead and vaguely allude to passages within them which I enjoy
from my favorite bizarre Crowley/Aziraphale dreamscape where they take the place of Adam and Eve:
Just before sunset, Crowley found Aziraphale by the lake under a pink-streaked sky, dipping her toes into the water and tossing bits of tomato at a paddling of greedily quacking ducks.“Hi,” he said, sitting down in the grass beside her. “Haven’t seen you in a while.”Aziraphale’s mouth twitched. “I suppose you think I’ve been neglecting you horribly.”“It’s nothing,” said Crowley, pathetically pleased to see she’d regained her sense of humour, at least. “You needed the time alone with your thoughts, I understand.”“Yes, well,” she sighed, patting her lower abdomen awkwardly. “It doesn’t look as though I’ll be alone with them for some months to come.”“That’s terrific,” said Crowley, light-headed with relief. “So you won’t be taking Pulsifer up on his offer, then? You’ve no idea how happy I am to hear…” He bit his tongue, too late.Aziraphale frowned. “How do you know about that?”“Er,” said Crowley, smile turned sheepish. “Let’s just say, for a rural area with a population of five, you wouldn’t believe the rumour mill.”
from The Blest Surprize, a JSMN/Aubreyad crossover and one of my Top Fanfictions Of All Time:
“Indeed the spell that binds me here is not so much a spell as – hark! Do you hear that?”
Arabella heard nothing, but Maturin sat erect in his chair with a listening look about him. As always when this happened, Arabella caught up her shawl, overtaken by an unreasonable terror. Maturin held up his hand, halting her movements.
“It is not your enemy. I promise you it is not,” he said in an intense whisper, shocking in its deadly seriousness and tension. “I would stake my immortal soul upon it. I know that step as well as my own heartbeat. Mrs. Strange, if I could beg a favour of you, of your very great kindness – we mariners are full of superstitions, you know, and you have been my charm. He is never so close as when you are here. Stay a moment, I beg you. I will ask no more than a moment.”
Arabella mastered herself.
“I will be glad to, if that is your wish,” she said, as steadily as she could.
A very great fear was upon her, no less real for being irrational. For rationality had not protected her from her present misery. It would not rescue her from her enchantment.
from YT fic about TH White Arthur and Lancelot:
The chirurgeon was a little man with a reputation as an excellent barber who wielded a sharp blade. He was also as close to a doctor as one could find in a medieval army on the march.
That’s not to say he was uneducated. He had learned his letters at a monastery school and had read Lanfrank’s Science of cirurgie in its entirety. He was proud of this achievement for it was a lovely book full of what to do for bruises, cuts, broken bones, and disturbances of the humors. So now, as Arthur sat stiffly under his professional hands, the chirurgeon was mentally paging through the book, muttering as he went.
When he saw Lancelot, he curtly gestured him out of the tent, but Arthur smiled weakly and said, “Stay, Lance. We need to talk strategy.” Lancelot was not sure whether it really made sense for him to stay or whether Arthur simply didn’t want to be alone with the chirurgeon. Either way he stayed and wondered what he meant to this man whom he both knew and did not know at all.
Lancelot sat and took Arthur’s hand while the chirurgeon carefully felt the bones of Arthur’s head and chest. The damage to his scalp was mostly hidden by his hair, except for some large gouges down one cheek. These the chirurgeon carefully washed down with good beer. His back, however, was a work of art that put the flowers to shame: deep reds and purples bloomed all up and down his spine.
Tut-tutting to himself, the surgeon quoted: “The wounds that beeth made with bruising, as with smiting of a staff, other stone, other falling, other with smiting of a horse, other with anything semblable to them, haveth great differences from wounds that beeth made with cutting: as with sword, knife, or arrow pricking, & in other manner they shall be healed.”
Touching Arthur’s skin lightly, the barber said, “Sire, you are hot to the touch and plethoric with excess blood. For this to heal properly, I must let out the wicked humors.”
Arthur nodded absently and said, “As you must.”
