It's super funny that Laurence learns that Catherine is pregnant and instantly ranks his colleagues by attractiveness.

I’m usually not someone who wants to buy a new printing of a book just because it has a different cover but the Temeraire art by Rovina Cai has me so tempted!
There is even spine cover art for the entire collection!

This series remains one of my favorites and I implore everyone to read these wonderful books! Dragon riders in the Napoleonic wars, with rich cultures from around the world, intense battle scenes, dragons arguing for fair rights and pay, and more!

Black Powder War:
Arkady and his pack of other 'feral' dragons steal cattle belonging to the sultan of Istanbul, causing a diplomatic incident. While Temeraire points out that they were simply acting out of ignorance and did not understand humans 'owned' the cows, and were merely hungry, a frustrated Laurence rather feels this was quite self-evident.
Empire of Ivory:
Laurence and his team of British military (wo)men steal medicinal mushrooms belonging to the Tswana people. While Laurence points out that they were simply acting out of ignorance and did not understand the local people owned the mushrooms, and merely needed it to treat their own dragons, the frustrated local officials clearly feel this was quite self-evident.
Self Reflection Had:
Currently? Zero.

Honestly, I adore Emily too.
Emily from the advanced age of twelve, already deciding that eleven or younger is a child where she is very much an Adult.

the fact that this moment is perfectly split over the page is hilarious to me, i so hope this is intentional. like, we all know what Laurence would do, but the moment of sitting there as i turned the page going "Oh gee! I wonder! 🤷" was so much fun.
this is in the edition with the cover illustrations by Andrew Davidson. if you have a different edition and its like this in there too pls let me know.

god the parallels make me unwell. the way in book 1, Berkley says that they're actually sorry and grieving for Praecursoris bc he is a dragon and was only doing what his captain told him to do, because Praecursoris would not have thought it on his own as he does not care for king and country. But then in book 4, Temeraire is saying to Laurence that Laurence did it on Temeraire's behalf, that Laurence would not have thought it on his own as he cares, so very much, for king and country, even to the point of dooming him.

Based on the on-page body count and problems caused, the real antagonist of the Temeraire series is the language barrier. Also slavery.
The two antagonists of the Temeraire series are the language barrier, slavery, and the casual cruelties of societies who get to choose who counts as a person.
The THREE-- I'll come in again.

New Temeraire Covers
Tumblr media
These beauties are by cover artist Rovina Cai, and they are for the new trade paperback editions of Namoi Novik's Temeraire series.
When books get rereleased with new covers, the aesthetics can be a bit hit or miss, and I'd be lying if I said it didn't take me a hot minute to get used to the new Temeraire covers. I loved the bold, swirly, fantasy vibe of the original covers, and the new covers feel like they lean way more into a "history with dragons" vibe. That new vibe is arguably more accurate to the books, and they actually share aesthetic vibes with the Lady Trent memoir covers. All that to say that these new covers have really grown on me, and I am fighting with myself over getting the new releases because *PRETTY*.

Noooo I started Empire of Ivory yesterday :'( under a cut for spoilers
The dragons are sick???? Noooooooo! Is that what Temeraire had on the ship? That's so mean, Temeraire has been talking about seeing Maximus and Lily for TWO BOOKS and now they're sick??
Though I have to say I really really like the series so far. Especially how the plot twists and turns are so well constructed! It's not entirely unguessable (Tharkay getting Arkady & Co) but very satisfying to see how the pieces fall into place. And I like how the plot takes them all over the world, and how Laurence's world view changes over time. I wonder if his moral blind spot where the East India Trading Company is concerned is also one of Naomi Novik's, or if that's addressed at some later point.

New fic alert!
Author reveals of the AU Exchange are done, so here we go!
Tumblr media
Relationship: Jack Aubrey & Stephen Maturin, Jack Aubrey & HMS Surprise
Rating and Genre: Temeraire AU, Sickfic, Angst with a Happy Ending, T
Wordcount: 2k
Dragons all over England had been afflicted by a terrible plague, including Jack's old, trusty companion, the anglewing Admirationis. Today Stephen brings hopeful news back to the covert.
“Thank the Lord,” Jack exclaimed. He laughed, somewhere between joyfulness and hysteria. "Surprise, my dear Surprise," he pressed his forehead to the dragon, who was blinking lethargically back at him, but shifted a bit closer in response. "Stephen will save you… by God, you have done it, my friend!"
